Really hard teacher. He is a nice guy overall but he sucks as a teacher. the papers he has you write are pointless. He gets off topic every lecture
Nice guy. the class is kind of interesting but confusing and hard as hell
Assignments were not very well described. Also his grading style was hard to figure out. He changes what he emphasises in each paper. He did however let us resubmit our papers for more credit after we fixed any problems.
Attendnig class is pointless...He assigns 3 or 4 papers at a time and he doesn't explain them at all...just confusing, confusing, confusing...no one in the class ever knows what is going on...he talks in circles and does not know how to answer questions.
really hard grader, but lets you resubmit papers. class is boring and pointless. Make sure you show effort by emailing him about assignments...use LOTS of outside sources when writing papers. Papers are confusing and random. Multiple assignments are given at one time. Very leanient on paper due date though.
Hard Grader, but let's you revise, kind of boring
terrible teacher, work gets overwhelming. no paper is good enough for him
Bad teacher. Doesn't explain things well enough.
hard teacher. doesn't explain assignments. doesn't believe papers should be above a D. Confusing. Nice guy, but he confuses the hell out of me. English 212 is highly needed but do NOT take this man. You will regret it. I know I do!!!
His engl. 212 class on memory is rediculously hard. he talks for the entire class but says nothing. It is impossable to get even a C in his class!! I would never take his class again. his assgnments are ccompletely off the wall.
If you value your life, GPA, free time, and sanity, do not take this professor! He gives an incredible about of work, is not clear on what is expected of assignments, has ridiculous expectations, and thinks you have enough free time to multiple papers at once and a million Vspace postings. You don't learn a thing and it's a complete waste of time!!
Made us write papers on personal subjects, then made negative comments on our relationships, judged our papers on our relationship choices and opinions. I have not learned a thing. Assignments were not clear. Inconsistent grading week to week, gets angry when you disagree with his viewpoint in your paper and grades accordingly.
confusing
Seriously if you do one smart thing in your life you will not take one of his classes. Your gpa will suck afterwards.. please I beg you it's bad.
A different kind of class. Interesting at some times but also pretty confusing. He overloads you with work. I didn't think it was a horrible class but I wouldn't take it again.
If you expect to learn to write in Writing in Electronic Spaces, you won't. This is cyberculture studies course. Prof ignored the course description and taught his own pet proj. Instructions came from syllabus, Vspace, Facebook, class blogs, verbal, and emails - all seemed to differ and contradict. Prof criticized students in front of others.
Horrible professor. Teaches nothing but useless junk. Didn't care if students learned and was very rude in many ways. AVOID. Big waste of money. He tried to treat our 285 class- who only learned to use facebook- like a graduate course.
The class was interesting, but was not clear about anything. Wants you to be like everyone else, if your not as good as your peers you will fail. Do not take you will regret it. Take another 212...it will be worth it!!!!
He is very hard to understand doesn't make projects clear and it doesn't make any sense. If you want your GPA to suffer take his class. Very important!!!! take a different 212 you will be glad you did.
I was so interested in the class itself and he totally ruined the experience for me. His standards are so high it's pathetic. He likes to mention that he went to Purdue about 10 times a class. Way too much homework!! RUN. FAST. and never contemplate taking him again.
I have never heard so many people complain about a professor I think so highly of. He is the best professor I have had. Class isn't easy, but He is very helpful. If you get a chance to take this class do it! NOT HARD, JUST SHOW EFFORT!!
Definitely one of the hardest classes! Does not know how to explain projects in simple terms. lots of reading required and expects way too much of students
Truly makes you think outside the box. If you go into the class with an open mind and simply do what he asks of you on papers you will get an easy A. He is a really nice and wants to make his students think.
I had his Memory and Digital writing class and honestly, any difficulty in the class wasn't from him being a tough teacher, but rather just trying to understand the material. He's an easy grader as long as you show effort in your work.
Difficult to understand, self absorbed and condescending, the class is boring and even though he tends to grade easy the papers are confusing and very long. at least 10 pages for each paper which one is assigned just about every week. I do not recommend this class to anyone
Worst Teacher I have ever had. Made me cry many times. Does not help at all and didn't seem to be interested in if I learned or not. He never answered my questions. Just horrible. He was impossible to understand. He never gave clear directions then got made when we didn't do it "right". Absolutely horrible teacher.
Never take this class. Not a nice person and not a good teacher.
I agree with every statement made about this professor. He is absolutely terrible. Completely useless in every fashion. ATTENTION: DO NOT TAKE GEOFFREY CARTER.
horrible teacher, every time you edit a paper he always comes back with some feedback and then tells you something totally different the next paper you turn in. Really confusing, lectures are 100% pointless, I actually liked writing before I took this class.
One of the absolute best professors at SVSU. You can learn an extreme amount of information from Dr. Carter if you just pay attention and stay involved in class. He is very nice to all students. Also gives you multiple chances to edit and turn in your papers for a better grade and gives you a very long time to do see.Would recommend him to everyone
this guy told me to drop out 4 times over the course of the semester when I would ask him for help. he instilled NO confidence in me whatsoever as a writer and a student. i would NEVER recommend taking any of his classes..
His class was pretty challenging, and definitely expects a lot from his students. Several times I would be working on three different papers at once. He didn't seem to take it into consideration that we all had other classes besides his own to work on. And when I really needed his help he was dismissive and seemed eager to just go on his vacation
Bad professor for a first time college student. Tons of work, but the final exam was extremely easy. Lets you re do papers, but that's about the only good thing about him.
If you NEED a teacher, go back to high school, this guy is a prof. Figure it out and see the future of communication .
Cool prof, out there ideas, not your dads English class. Very different and prog.
I heard he was hard, but found him pretty flexible. He gave lots of examples from past student work to show what he wanted. He also gave me lots of feedback on revision and turned back projects within a week.
Dr. Carter is an excellent professor. A lot of people feel he is unfair in his grading, but if you do what is expected then you'll get the grade you deserve. You always have the opportunity to rewrite every paper you do. He's always willing to talk to you and help you. He's very easy going as far as deadlines for papers. I would recommend him.
The only thing I can figure out from the comments is that people on here are lazy. He was sometimes confusing, but I never had a teacher who returned papers as fast as he did or let you re-write anything you wanted. He definitely expected more than other teachers, but he always answers e-mails and was at his office hours. I'd take him again
He is extremely confusing and assigns such a ridiculous amount of homework. He is impossible to write for because he changes his mind about what he wants done on an essay. Lectures are long and he goes off on tangents!
Had a great experience in this class. Wish he taught classes in some of the other departments too.
He finds himself incredibly interesting. It's difficult to follow his lines of thought in lecture, as they only seem to make sense to him and he gets sidetracked a lot. He's certainly knowledgeable and trying to help, and I give him credit for that, but at times it seems even he doesn't know what this class is actually about or where it's headed.
So far, so good! He is really into documentaries and knows his stuff. We're watching lots of cool movies. I look forward to every class.
Cool class, cool guy. Never heard of YouTube as a Participatory Culture before. Guess this is one to.
Not what I expected, but I like this class. What's could be better than a class built around the topic of sports and writing?
My roommate recommended his Memory class to me last semester, and we find ourselves talking about it sometimes. Interesting work of former students who have put their work on YouTube. He's not requiring this any longer, though. I might try one anyway.
This memory class seemed interesting at first, but he is not a good teacher. He has good ideas but does not know how to explain them. He will have three assignments going on at once and is not clear to what he wants with any of them. He does let you redo your papers for a better grade but that is the only thing to look forward to.
He is very passionate about this class and it shows. I had little to no interest before starting the class but he really makes it seem cool!
His class is built around four large writing projects and weekly posts VSpace. He gives you lots of time to revise. He breaks up the class with short videos and he tries to get people to talk about what they're doing. Makes more of an effort than some teachers that I've had. He does repeat some things over and over.
Had him last semester. Enjoyed his style and the innovative use of technology. He wrote me a letter of recommendation when I asked him to.
Honestly, I learned more than I thought would about writing and documentaries. Feedback was there if you asked, and I enjoyed making a fillm most of all. (Everybody seemed to enjoy the last project, in fact.)
Never had a class like this - prof was able to link anything anyone brought up to what was going on in class. Sometimes felt all over the place, but it was never boring!
I took his English 300 summer class before I transfered from Saginaw Valley. Some of the stuff he was into showed where I went next. Giving the guy credit and to the overall personalized approach of SV.
Dr. Carter is nice to his students. I looked forward to his Participatory Culture class every week, and I learned something new about technology and my writing.
Dr. Carter is a great guy and his sports class is interesting. However, he tries to focus on way to many projects at one time leaving you to feel overwhelmed. If you pay attention to the syllabus then you should be fine. I recommend doing everything ahead of time.
I would not suggest taking his class. He is awful at explaining and gives way to many assignments to focus on at one time. DO NOT TAKE
Four main projects with plenty of time to revise. Honestly, I don't understand how some people can say IN ALL CAPS that Dr. Carter isn't worthwhile. I turned C grades into B's & A's with a visit to office hours. I RECOMMEND HIM!
I had him for first-year composition my first year. We watched Rocky and Sicko and we described our home. We talked on VSpace every week and I thought I would do that more in my other classes, but his one the only one.. He's not too hard.
I'm loving his Memory class, especially now that we're reading Oliver Sacks. Amelie was also an excellent movie, even though it was in French. I would say his class took some warming up to, but now I look forward to it each week.
Dr. Carter was a good teacher. A lot of people in the class didnt care for him because he didnt tell us step for step what to do on the papers because it's a CRITICAL THINKING class.Overall I found this class to be pretty easy. If your willing to put in the time, think outside of the box and go beyond the rubric you will def get an A!
Now that it's summer and I have some distance from his class, I have to admit that as random as it seemed at the time, Dr. Carter is into lots of movies, music, and television shows that I keep coming across. I recommend him, even though I worked harder than I thought I would.
Not helpful. Rude. Very unclear. Not an easy grader. Very confusing. I do not recommend this class at all.
Carter knows how to mix things up with what he does in class. He uses many short videos from previous classes and he has a clear rubric that helps with the papers. There is also plenty of opportunity to assess your own daily work. Pretty easy GE class.
Carter was always willing to help. No exams just papers which we always had an opportunity to make revisions and get up to 10% back. He was very understanding with deadlines and always gave ample time to finish assignments because they did take a lot of work. I took the sports issues and controversies section and loved it.
He is a hard graded and doesn't tell you what he wants, then he gave me 5/25 because I missed one requirement on an assignment. Very confusing and unorganized. I do not advice taking him ever. Everyone in class is lost. He doesn't even know what he wants.
Carter's class will introduce you to some different assignments. If you go in there with an open mind, it's a pretty cool class. He gives you a chance to revise your work and he is super helpful when you go to him for help. I'd recommend taking him and would again if given the chance.
Class is harder than it should be, very high expectation.
He was very confusing as he talked about nonsense. Many times in class we all looked at each other not knowing anything he was talking about. Flip-flopped many times on what he wanted in the papers, sometimes even after you had already turned them in. The class was quite awful. DO NOT TAKE
DO NOT TAKE HIM! I had in for participatory culture and it was terrible! he allows two absences I had no and he dropped my grade 5% and I had a doctors note! He was not fair let some ppl turn stuff in late and did not penalize them at all but those of us who did the work lost stupid points.. TERRIBLE TEACHER
Second worst class I've ever had. You sit and watch gross and boring documentaries every class period and work on papers at home. The documentaries have nothing to do with your assignments, so you can space out the whole time and be fine. He assigns a new paper the day you turn yours in, and you have to make a video for the last project.
Personally, I liked the freedom his projects. I didn't follow everything about Electracy, but there were so many good examples from earlier classes that I never felt intimidated. I've never had a class share so much work from earlier classes. Great one-on-one suggestions if you email or visit office hrs. Thumbs Up to Participatory Culture!
I took his Memory class awhile ago and the things that stand out are the Clipograpy Project and watching Temple Grandin. Alright class.
OMG I'm taking another English class at SVSU and I miss this guy's class. His class always planned out and he kept thingss focused on the papers. The class I have now never does that and we still haven't gotten one assignment back yet. Dr. Carter always turned things back after a weekend.
I dropped this guy's class on day one because on the first day he said he had twenty years of teaching experience teaching writing with a degree in writing from Purdue. My roommate is taking a class from a lady who has never taught writing before and that will be just easier. Maybe this guy is good, but I bet he's hard. I just want an easy A.
Asked him for more help on an assignment and he responded with "I wish I could be of more help." If you're good at shooting in the dark on assignments, this is the class for you.
Take the music class, you only type 3 papers which is 2 pages long and only do one project which is not hard at all. He's cool and will help you whenever you need it.
As far as I know he only teaches this class during the spring/summer. 8-10 papers with 4 books and multiple readings in 7 weeks is ridiculous for a gen-ed class. It seems to me he thinks his class is more important than it actually is. He's nice and will work with students, but procrastination will take its toll. I dropped and went online at Delta
He's nice, sometimes it feels like his lectures don't make sense with what we are doing, it's kind of unorganized. He doesn't have his grades online, sometimes his talking can be distracting.
I do not recommend taking him. What he talks about in class is only loosely connected to whatever project we are working on. It is often that nobody knows what is going on or what he is trying to explain. He makes this class a lot harder than it should be. He also doesn't post grades on canvas, which is annoying.
He doesn't post any grades on canvas so you good luck on knowing what your grade is. The blogs and logs count for a lot so do them. He talks a lot and uses videos that were long and confusing. When he would try to explain something you found confusing you just ended up more confused. He also has a small stutter and his voice is kind of monotone.
He's a hard grader and I never knew what he expected of me. I passed English 111 with an A and I'm barely passing his class right now. The music course with him is awful you don't get as much say in what you can write about as he makes you think you do.
Dr. Carter gave freely of his time to students who were willing to take advantage of the opportunity. His projects / papers required you to think outside of the box. If you are looking for an easy A this isn't your class. However, if you want to get your money's worth, recommend Dr. Carter.
Geoffrey is a real meme. For 212 you have random weird 'think outside the box' projects, if you have this class with the regular group and you complete the assignment you'll prob get an A. He struggles to connect w/ his students, and furthermore make it clear what you should do for the projects. He has 2 PHD's so he thinks he can make up words.
Dr. Carter is a brilliant man, and he really tries to destroy the traditional essay writing with a creative (more memorable) way of writing. His class lectures, and the stuff he shares all are really interesting. He grades honestly, and wants his students to succeed. Still could come down to earth more often and connect with his students.
Looking for a class in which there are no clear grading standards, a condescending professor that will fail to connect with you, and class content consisting of nothing but obscure YouTube videos and information about the professor's personal life (i.e. how he went to Purdue and Arizona State)? If so this is the class for you! Avoid if you can.
Terrible is the only word I can use to describe him. Never clear on his expectations of what he wants for the projects and is awful at helping with them, very hard grader. Does not use canvas, weekly discussions, takes attendance. Only positive thing I have to say about him is that the week projects are due, you choose which of the days you turn in
Very unclear on what assignments ask, canvas will say one thing and he'll mark you down for doing what it says b/c he doesn't want it that way. Gives bad feedback like (this is A-C range paper not saying A, B, C). Doesn't help at all just repeats himself even if you don't understand it. If you say you're struggling he says its your fault mostly.
Decent teacher, most of the assignments, besides the essays are self-assessed and he honors your scores. Essay dates are flexible, and he offers a lot of time to edit and resubmit essay for a better grade. Overall, he is good and knowledgeable teacher.
Professor Carter really cares about his students. If you ask him for help with your essay he will give you many ideas to help. For English 212 when you get a paper back he lets you make corrections to it to improve your grade up to 10 points. As long as you attend class and listen to what he expects for the essays you will pass with an easy A.
We had a lot of projects and papers due at the same time, he made us read on our own time and we had discussion posts every week. It was a lot of work and he does not grade easy. But, he gave us a chance to redo our assignments (including big projects). Just depends on if youre willing to put in the work
In my short weeks with him I enjoyed his humor, his passion, and knowledge on English. I found that his lectures was mostly on point to what he intended to teach with instances at times where he got off track but corrected himself. He gave quite creative assignment. He's leniant, but his class isn't and easy A. Work hard and take all opportunities.
He isn't the worst but he isn't the best. He doesn't care how well you do in the class.
Professor Carter's class involves staying on task and coming to class, however he is very willing to help and cares about his students. The class involves many essays and projects, but he does this to benefit the student and provide as much feedback as possible. He gives clear explanations about what he expects and is willing to answer any question
Every class period is pointless, you will watch videos and movies and hear him lecture about unrelated things. His direction on papers and assignments are always unclear. He doesnt know what he wants in assignments. It is very evident he is there for the paycheck not for the love of teaching. The fact he got through grad school is hope many.
I took his Documentary course and I appreciated the diversity of material. My roommate had his Memory class and from what I can tell they're pretty much the same. You keep track of Canvas points, he gives you what's in the gradebook when you ask, and revise if you want more points. His rubric and assignment sheets make it pretty clear. Easy enough
It sounded like a fun class in the beginning, but it wasn't. He was very unclear in the directions for the papers. He also has favorites, so if your not one of his favorites then you probably won't do that well. I went to his office hours to get help to revise my paper then I did exactly what he told me to do and didn't change my grade at all.
I took his documentary class and definitely struggled. I have never had a hard time in English until his class. Throughout the semester the papers got harder, along with a weekly discussion post for points that is very easy to forget about. He does not put any grades online, but will make it very clear to you if you're failing.
Very biased on work, if he doesnt like you your grade will reflect. Lots of videos in lectures. Dont buy the books, use online sources to get enough info like quotes. Keep up on blogs/logs on canvas they account for a lot of points. Expect you to average a C per paper after the first 2 papers, it gets harder. His class was interesting.
I took Dr. Carter for 111 and 212 (Music and Writing). In both classes he is clear about how the class is structured and he has students use the rubric to grade two short essays. The videos are short examples and you earn credit by discussing them. Honestly, I enjoyed his classes & I felt good when he said he could tell I spent time on my writing.
It looks like Im the 100th person to rate this prof. If you look at the comments here its either you like or think hes awful. I thought his class was okay. It was different than other classes and easier than most of mine. I was okay with the Bs he gave me. I didnt think he was awful.
Terrible not interested in helping students. Doesnt help you even at office hrs. Just advises you to drop the class!
I absolutely love how caring and funny Professor Carter was. He gives you so many opportunities to turn in late work. He themes his classes so they're fun. And he usually did not take up the full time slot.
Professor Carter is a really nice guy that cares about his students. He gives you an incredible amount of time to edit your papers for a better grade after they are already turned in. There are a good amount of papers but as long as you put in some effort, they are doable and not very difficult.
Professor Carter gives very clear instructions for his essays in his rubrics and gives lots of time to complete them. English is not my strong suit and he made all the papers easy to write. You have to pay attention in class as well because he gives ideas to focus on in your papers. I would take him again.
This guy has the stupidest writing assignments I have heard of. The assignments that he assigns do not get your writing skills better whatsoever. He makes up his own assignments , and they are pointless. This guy is not the professor to take for English.
Dr. Carter's Memory class was unique; I really enjoyed it. His projects are much different from any other course I've taken--many, if not all, allowed the opportunity for writing about whatever you wanted in some way. He also offered revisions for an improved grade on projects. The topics we discussed were very interesting. Would recommend!
I am not an English person but I loved his class. He is very clear on his grading criteria and if you follow it you will get 100% on all of your papers. You do have to write 5-6 papers and at the end you have to make a documentary.
I could not have been happier with Dr. Carter. There is a decent amount of writing to be done (as would be expected), but the projects I did in this class are unlike any others I have done before. He really lets you take the reins in your projects and control where they go. I never felt like I was turning in the same paper as the person next to me.
Professor Carter is not one to take if you like professors that are clear in instruction and make it clear what they expect. He knows what he wants and if you cannot read his mind, you don't get good grades. His projects are hard to understand and instruction sheets are wordy and hard to understand.
The work of this class is TOO MUCH for a GenEd. The prof is very unorganized, tons of homework, discussions, readings (7 novels in 7 weeks), does not use Canvas to post grades; you have to email him and ask about it. Due dates are not clearly stated in the 14-page syllabus. He thinks his class is more important than it actually is. AVOID.
This class requires a lot of attention, he assigns about 5-7 different novels a week and only communicates through email. I have never had a more frustrating class in my life and this is just an English 202 class it should not be this difficult. His communication skill are horrible and there's never a clear understanding on when assignments are due
Avoid this prof and ENGL 202 (Academic Genre) at all costs. He made the class more difficult than it needs to be. The was the hardest thing I have ever done in my 4 years in college. I completed the category, but did not actually benefit from the class.
I have this class once a week and its not bad
Clearly a passionate and well meaning professor. I had him for a hybrid class. He gives a lot of feedback. Essay instructions werent always clear, as he adds a lot of extra minor requirements during lectures that dont always make sense. He also spent a lot of class time showing videos that didnt really help me write my paper.
Whole class is just writing. I did almost every assignment the night before, and got an A on almost everyone. He gives little instruction, and you will always be confused on due dates, and what he wants you to do. He doesnt post grades, you have to do the math yourself and figure it out like his class is a math class for some reason.
I would not recommend taking this class. None of the class lectures will help with your papers and often do not make sense. You will always be confused about due dates. A paper almost once a week along with things called "log and Blogs". This class was a waste of time and I would recommend finding a different Professor for English 111.
DO NOT take this professor. I had him for basic Eng 111 and it was extremely difficult. None of the topics have anything to do with English. He grades harsh and is very unclear with what he wants from you. He doesn't update the rubrics and doesn't upload any grades. Please, save your money and get a different professor. I wish I had.
Professor Carter is a nice man but the class topics are boring and lead to long papers. There are only papers that you are graded on and nothing else besides online discussion posts. He gives clear criteria if you pay attention and is not that strict as long as you are within bounds. Overall, the class feels like busy work but is not hard.
Make sure to engage in the lectures and ask questions about anything you are confused on and he will be happy to help. Make sure to put effort into the papers you write and keep up on the blogs/logs, and if you do you will easily pass the class. The papers may be difficult at times, but he gives you plenty of time. Overall great class to take!
Really enjoyed having this Professor he was really passionate about everything he taught. Your grade consists of a number of papers throughout the semester. The papers were not normal boring English papers but very interesting. The workload was not too much. There was a short blog and log due each week and a paper due about every two weeks.
Prof. Carter was a decent professor. He clearly cared, but his feedback on assignments was slim to none. He would give me low grades on things I spent hours on with little explanation. However, all but the final essay I could redo for a higher score. His assignment sheets are confusing, so make sure you really pay attention to his instruction.
He couldn't clearly indicate what the class was about or the 78 papers we had to write. To make matters worse, he would only accept papers through EMAIL and would routinely lose them and blame you for not turning them in on time. He refused to use the Canvas website for the assignments. I would not recommend taking this section of English 212.
He is incredibly confusing and wants you to read his mind. He is rude and talks down to students. I would avoid this professor if possible. The content isn't overly difficult but he doesn't grade fairly. He wasn't a fan of my work or opinions and was very apparent about it in his grading.
Professor Carter will respond to emails when he has the chance. His grading does not make sense to anyone but himself. Our final project was to produce a 7-10 minute documentary about anything which was hard. This class made me step out of my comfort zone.
I revised something and he gave me 10/10. Later he forgot about that or something and lowered my grade. He should have a grade book or use canvas like everyone else.
He doesn't post grades or due dates. He's not clear with any instructions. He's disrespectful towards students and does not help when asked.
Dr. Carter was amazing. You have to keep up with class and do all of the readings to be able to do his essays.
He made the class available for either in-class or online. I did the whole class online and didnt have any problems. He responds within a day or two of turning in work through email. He gave lots of positive feedback and you could revise. Liked it better than 111. Seems like a nice guy.
He refuses to use canvas for grading and forces students to figure out their own grade. All this stress for a gen ed? no thanks. I would recommend taking any other gen ed to fulfill your requirements. Also, he forgets about grades he gives you, probably due to lack of organization because he refuses to use canvas.
Honestly surprised by all the negative reviews with his grading. I loved his music class and he always replied to my emails. All you have to do is keep track of your own blog points that you get to score. The class is fine, chill out about canvas grades. Easy A imho.
Seems like a cool dude. not organized and forgetful. I wouldnt take it again
WORST CLASS EVER waste of time and money. he gives you one grade then takes it back cause he cant find the email and says its late because he is so disorganized with his email
Sometimes boring, but better than most profs Ive had here. Id recommend.
One thing about his class that I really liked is how he connected the class to when he was a student in our shoes. He also liked sharing things his kids were doing and that was cool. I think hes passionate about teaching. I miss his memory class, my classes suck this semester
Absolutely terrible. I'm an English major and I had to withdraw because he was so terrible. His papers are about the stupidest topics and he assigns so many. If you get overwhelmed easily, DO NOT take this class with professor Carter. He is not understanding in the least with outside concerns of his students. Worst professor I've ever had.
Overall had a great experience. The workload is a little heavy, but not unbearable. One thing is I wish he would show examples on how to write the papers he assigns, because the rubrics are very broad. He does a great job on keeping it interesting, but you have to stay on top of the work, or you won't pass this class.
I don't know why his ratings are so poor. I thought Professor Carter was great. Yes there is a good amount of work to do but he gives plenty of time to do it. Yes we have to calculate our own grade but he literally tells us how to. He gives you time to revise your paper after it is graded too. I would take him again if I could and I hate english.
You have to email him all your projects/papers throughout the year. The problem with this is that he claims that you didn't turn in the paper when in reality he can't keep track of his own emails. He only grades on a scale of 1-10 so that can really mess your grade up. For example, he would give you a 6/10 if something isn't in the A-C range.
I despised this class. There is not a clear way to write your papers formatting wise, when you ask him a question about the paper, you are more than likely going to receive a variety of answers. I normally love to write papers, but I have not received any type of good grade in this class. He is a harsh professor for not giving clear instructions.
You will be very confused with him as he never posts due dates and doesn't update his syllabus or files. Gives good feedback but his classes are a waste of your time, you may as well just work on the projects at home.
He's a fifty year old hippy Prof who spells out how do everything in the syllabus. He gave a virtual option, but I went to class most days. Never had to wait long for feedback. I actually enjoyed the videos as everything related to his music theme. The main thing is not to miss the second Friday deadline. Flexible otherwise. I'd take him again.
has you say what grade you think you should get on papers which was weird but does grade fairly
Overall, the class was good. Had us do assignments and homework on things like bands that were popular in the 70s and 80s which I appreciated, it felt like a fresh take on an English class that wasn't filled with same boring things I had done before. Standard expectation on blog posts and generous grader. Beware the clipography project.
The class was often very boring and his grading criteria was very unclear. He does allow you to rewrite assignments and gave feedback on exactly what you were missing so that came in handy but it would've been better if we only had to do the papers once with clear understanding. There are weekly discussion posts that help prepare for assignments.
He won't let you know your grade. He has two deadlines for assignments
So many papers by the 4th week of the semester he had me writing 5 essays. Communicates using words unheard of, so when you are trying to view his comments you don't know if its bad or good.
He didn't record your grade on canvas but it was very simple to calculate. If you know addition and division, you'll be fine. His papers were not hard, they were out of 10 points and he gave great feedback. You could turn it in a week late with no penalty, all papers were due at noon on Fridays. It's an easy A. I hated writing and still passed.
There was a fair amount of work, he was a very caring teacher. Some classes were even dedicated to just going to work or he'd let us out early. He accepts all work one week past the due date which made the class a lot less stressful. He's a little quirky, some projects are odd. He's one of the nicest professors, always gave really nice feedback.
There are "blogs and logs" which are online discussions every week. He also does not put grades in Canvas, you have to add them up yourself. He is passionate about writing and English. He has lectures online too. As long as you can keep track of the due dates and put in effort in your papers, you will be fine.
All the work he assigns makes me want to scream and rip all of my hair out. No assignments made sense and seemed impossible. He also doesn't grade or post in Canvas.
Dr Carter is a really nice guy. He assigns lots of papers, but there are no midterms or exams, so I think that makes up for it. He provides clear rubrics for all essays, and he will answer your questions. He responds fast to most emails, and I think he really knows what he is teaching. I can tell that he cares about his students and their success.
If you're not constantly participating and asking questions the syllabus he releases makes almost no sense. It is like trying to decode another language because he uses his lectures as context for them. So if you weren't paying attention during the two minutes he actually talks about something productive, you're out of luck.
If you follow the syllabus and do the blog and log posts plus the assigned papers the class is a breeze. Professor Carter shows a different documentary every class and the class is never boring. Plus attendance is not mandatory and he streams the classes. It may feel a little heavy on the writing but he has no quizzes, no tests, and no final exam.
I took Professor Carters documentary class. His assignments were normal and creative to say the least. We did have a handful of papers that we had to write but at the end of the semester you get to make a documentary or clipography. Instructions could be confusing at times but if you did all the assignments it's an easy A.
Professor Carter's ENG212 class is a creative experience. The workload can be heavy, but the assignments are engaging. Attending class and staying engaged is key to understanding the confusing syllabus. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for prepping essays. Overall, it's a rewarding class if you put in the effort.
Do NOT reccommed!! Very tough grader. We only watch movies in class that dont have to do essays we have to do. He does not lecture or talk hardly. He is not understanding under any circustances and has given me bad grades and cant explain why he has done so even after I have done all the things required.
Definitely over hated, his class was not bad, and he did not grade hard. He discussed interesting topics and made the class fun. There weren't that many papers and they were never long.
I took his English 212 Music class. He was a great professor; there were just a lot of papers and tedious projects. Overall, I liked the class and would definitely recommend it.
Dr. Carter is an amazing professor if you participate in class. I took his Documentary & Film class, and it was interesting, but some of the topics covered were a little difficult. He does not put grades in the gradebook, so you have to calculate your own grade. Weekly 250 and 450 word discussion posts, but they weren't difficult.
I was not a fan of Professor Carter. Really tough grader. He also did not put grades into canvas and made you do the math on calculating your grade, and if you wanted to know for sure what it was, you had to ask him. Which if you aren't close with your professor it could make things difficult when it comes to that. Would not take again.
He is a super nice guy but he does expect a lot out of his students. Multiple papers that need to be written and he waited till the end of the semester to assign us 3 books back to back. He also doesn't keep up with grades, you have to do it then report back to him at the end of the semester. Super nice tho, depends if you are ready for the work.
This was genuinely one of my favorite classes I've taken. Dr. Carter was super caring, and he gave great feedback on all the assignments/papers. Always clear about expectations, and I knew what to expect going into grading. Overall, his class was very interesting, and he's a great professor who actually cares about his students.
Dr. Carter is nice but expects a lot from his students. Be prepared to write. While I found the class intriguing learning about the history of documentaries, I can honestly say I did not learn anything about writing. This class felt more like an intro to film class rather than an English class. He also did not answer my emails which I needed.
This class is way more work than you would think for a gen ed credit. It's all major papers/projects back to back and it gets very overwhelming very fast. Ridiculously high workload and each project is only 10pts each, so it doesn't even feel worth the effort. Pulled multiple all-nighters for those papers. Didn't even really learn anything either.
will say a lot of writing for a gen ed class. as long as you do the work which can be a lot you will pass. he gives you a time period after essays are due to go back and make revisions to improve your grade. he does not update grades so you have to keep track yourself which can be frusterating. he gives good feedback on essays.
