Would be a very good teacher, but he creates obnoxious, unnecessarily diffucult tests. He will tell you something will not be tested, but then it will be anyways. You will learn the material from him, but your scores will not reflect your knowledge accurately.
His test are extremely difficult, and he is a harsh grader. Make sure you do not prepare for them using his practice tests. They are completely different. He only grades a few of the homework problems you do, so make sure you do every one correctly. Check your work before you turn it in. STUDY for the test.
He explains the material well, but the tests are extreme! 3 tests and replaces your least midterm grade with your final grade!
Failed Math 242 the first time around and retook with Dr. Dillon. I found the material a lot easier to understand due to no language barrier. He curved the Final very heavily. My grade on the final was a 72 but after all his curves and extra credit I made a 90. Not the best Professor due to extreme tests but best math teacher I've had at USC.
Very good, engaging lectures but EXTREMELY difficult tests; much harder than anything encountered during lecture or homework. Homework counts for a small portion but only gives a handful of problems over a few weeks. Replaces lowest test with a comprehensive final. No language barrier.
He is obviously very intelligent and understands the material, but he really struggles with making the tests so that what you learn in class is able to be reflected on the tests. I really understood his lectures, but I had never taken calc before unlike the rest of my class so I couldn't apply the concepts the way that he wanted me to.
He is a nice man, but his tests are terrible. He replaces your final's grade with your least midterm grade! he doesnt curve midterms! I skipped most of the classes and self taught myself pretty much everything and got a B
HW was not relevant to course work, way way more difficult. Excellent professor but very tough. Would take again however.
He was a good professor, and he gave a lot of partial credit. Some of the reviews on this site say he's so horrible but he's really not. The class itself is super hard, and while he isn't the greatest prof in the world I actually liked him. If you have to take Math 344 and are reading some of these reviews, don't worry because its not that bad
I love math, so this might be a bit biased, but I really like Dr. Dillon. I had him for MATH242 and MATH344 and I greatly enjoy his teaching style. He takes notes based on the book and if you do the homework you should be fine on tests and quizzes. His tests are not easy and often have a few tricky (not impossible) problems that require thinking.
It is calculus. The professor was ok he did the best he could given the fact that it was calculus.
Dillon is a really funny guy who can teach calculus. The content honestly isnt terribly difficult to digest, its really about how much you pay attention and how diligent you are with MyMathLab homework. He always tries to make you laugh and that really changes the atmosphere of the class.
You will not be able to get by in this class without putting extra practice into learning the course material. Not very easy to get a hold of outside of class. But!! His lectures are very engaging and hilarious which really helped me learn the concepts. Make sure that you do section problems on your own to fully understand the material.
Does a good job at teaching material in a clear manner. If you put extra effort into really learning the material and go to office hours it will pay off because the tests are hard.
He has good lectures and is open for questions. However, his homework is not relatable to his tests. His tests are much harder than his class work and homework. Also, his tests are very few questions and he gives you very little information of what will be on the test, and sometimes will focus heavily on one subject then not put it on the test.
Dillon teaches the content well, but commonly has too challenging of questions on his tests that didn't seem to directly correlate to classwork or homework. He is comfortable with giving questions that challenge your understanding of the *concepts* covered in class, not just questions you've done before. Replaced lowest test grade w/ overall grade.
This class was very challenging. Professor Dillon was funny and gave partial credit which made the class more enjoyable. Sometimes, there were questions on the tests that we didn't really go over but for the most part if you go to SI sessions and study you should do well.
He seems like a good guy and he knows the material very well, he just is not very well at explaining it. Everything is from lectures, and he just lectures in theory rather than actual examples. The homework assignments are nothing like the test and quizzes. He's not very helpful when you ask questions, his outlook is you either get it or you don't.
Always looking for class participation and eager to answer questions. Won't remind you there's homework, you have to check. Tells you exactly what type of questions will be on the test. Uses humor during lectures. Dresses kind of like a hobo, but he taught in LeConte so like it fits. What really brought my grade down were weekly quizzes.
Love Dillon! Had him for math 142 and made sure to take him again for 241 wish I could have him for 242. Really wants to help his students succeed
Professor Dillon is one of the best profs I've had at USC. He's really funny and I didn't mind going to class. He knows the material really well and always does examples to make sure everyone understands. Tests are kind of hard but if you study you'll do fine. Wish I could have him for every math class!
Dr. Dillons Calc 2 class is definitely difficult, but thats because Calc 2 is difficult. His lectures had tons of examples, he happily took questions at any points, and the test questions usually were examples we had gone over in class. He had many office hours and happily helped me whenever I needed it. Homework was annoying but not overwhelming
3 Tests and an exam that count for 85% of the grade. Doesn't take attendance but lectures are the only way to know whats gonna be on the tests. Does a good job teaching and doesnt have any accent.
He goes over pass exams and book questions to help students prepare for upcoming exams which was very helpful.
probably one of the clearest math teachers/professors I've had. explains concepts clearly and homework and tests are reasonable. Maple was kind of annoying and didn't contribute much to the course; professor and TA are accessible and approachable if you need any help with anything.
He's a good professor. He explains things well during lectures and assigns homework fairly often. If you miss class a lot, you will fall behind fairly quick. He gives TONS of partial credit on exams and cares more about how to do the question and not about the actual answer. But in my opinion his exams are much harder than anything we do in class.
hes a good guy but not the best at teaching. he has very high expectations and was very irritated when the class average for our first exam was 54%. the quizzes are two questions he drops the lowest. there are worse calc teachers out there but he isnt the #1 option. hes nice outside of class and seems to genuinely care hes just tough
If you have the chance, take this man. You have to go to every class, however, he keeps it highly entertaining with his witty jokes that get the whole class engaged and laughing. That being said, he prides himself on being difficult so be ready for tricky questions on tests. Calc2 is a challenging so course so be ready to work
He's a pretty great professor and funny/keeps class interesting. Teaches well in class but the material is hard. Tests are hard so be prepared and go to SI for extra help. Quiz every week during recitation. Don't skip class or you will have no idea what is happening.
He tries to make the class interesting and fun with his jokes but he isn't the best when it comes to the actual material. He is sometimes unclear and doesn't explain what he is doing. He also frequently makes mistakes in class and there was a time where he couldn't figure out how to do his own example problem. Avoid him if you can.
Prof Dillon is the worst math professor I have ever taken. Don't take him if you want a good experience. He gives optional homework from which he bases weekly quizzes, but they rarely coordinate with lecture content. His exams are absolutely brutal and proof/theorem heavy. He takes forever to grade anything and your average is based 85% on exams.
Dr. Dillon is one of the nicest guys I've ever met. He truly cares about his students and has a great sense of humor. The class itself is really difficult, and his tests are even harder. But overall I would take again. Be sure to attend all lectures and recitations because he gives hints on tricks he might pull on the test. Great guy.
Best professor I've had so far as a freshman. His humor is different, but it does lighten up the class. He is very caring about his students. His tests are pretty hard, not gonna lie, but if you did the homework and paid attention in class, you'd be fine. Definitely gonna retake him for my math major courses.
He is just a very down to earth guy. Had him for math300, and he was very patient with us and focused more on us understanding the material then just pushing through it. 10/10 would recommend.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. Had him for Math142 and again for 300 and I wish he could teach me forever. Goes through the notes as if he's writing them himself and will answer every question given, and if he can't answer it, he'll be straight up and answer it later. Exams were tough, but if you pay attention in class and do the work, you'll be fine.
He goes through the notes with you in class as if he is taking them; it's really nice. Great explainer and will answer any questions you have. The exams can be challenging, but you are exposed to all question types by exam time.
He provides understandable explanations over the material he's covering. His lectures are easy to follow as he goes into depth with his notes and explains them as if he's taking them, too, so anyone can follow along. While there is a lot of homework, it covers all diverse problems so that when the tests come there're not too hard.
He explains things well and is mildly funny. Tests are difficult to determine as some are very easy while others are very difficult.
His teaching style is alright, it might not work for you because it can be a little dull. He goes through the material as if he was taking notes, so it's easy to follow along. He also goes through a good number of examples. The HW is a bit tougher but it helps with understanding. His tests can be hard if you don't prepare by doing practice problems
Professor Dillon I would NEVER take again. He said I would pass and he gave me a failing grade. The exams were nothing like homework or lectures. I never missed a class, always attended office hours, and I went to tutoring. Impossible class with him!
Professor Dillon is a solid professor. Pretty good at explaining topics. Only thing that frustrated me was that he gave us the Ch. 12 & 13 test after Ch. 14 and Ch. 15 test, it would have been really beneficial to have that knowledge before the Ch. 14 and Ch. 15 tests. Will occasionally drop some funny jokes, made me laugh several times.
He's a decent teacher. I don't love him. Explains topics well. Weekly quizzes. Calc II can be very hard, so I don't think it's his fault. You'll be fine with him.
He has a pretty great personality, I really like his teaching style. He can tell that he is really passionate about the coursework. Overall not bad. He grades pretty tough, and the only reason I passed the class is because he allowed the final to replace our lowest test score and I got a 75 on the final, so I was pretty good. Not bad class.
His lectures and the examples he goes through in class are vastly different from how exams are structured, the class average on all three midterms were in the 50s and he did not curve. Although he was a pretty decent professor and his lectures were easy to follow there was definitely some disconnect between his teaching methods and his tests.
Professor Dillon explains things well, but his exams are the downfall for all students. He even admits they are exceptionally difficult. The average for all was around a 50. He curved the class at the end because the majority of students were failing. If you have a great background in math and can teach yourself, go for it. If not, stay far away.
The exams for this class were worth 60% of your grade and they were impossible. No matter how much I studied or did the homework he would surprise us with a concept on the exam which was impossible to understand. The average for the first and third exams was 50% and he didn't care. I wouldn't take him again or recommend him at all.
Professor Dillon made exams extremely hard in contrast to what we learned in class. I don't think a single test average for the class was even a 60%. The only thing helpful about the class was that the test were weighted as 60% and the other easy assignments like homework and labs were 40%. He also refused to give curves for god knows why.
Calc 2 is a very hard class, but his lectures were really good and made it easy to understand. He lectures like he's taking notes so it's easy to follow and comprehend. However, he was kinda unorganized and took forever to grade and return things. He held important grades past the drop date and canceled an exam, making the hardest test worth double
Even though he is hilarious and keeps classes interesting, I had a hard time learning the subject matter.
Attendance is not mandatory but I would not recommend skipping as the examples in class are very helpful for the exams, which account for most of your grade, and he goes over some common mistakes (a "dirty trick"). He goes through the content in (ch) 14, 15, 12&13, 16 in that order, making 12&13 quite boring as its mostly stuff you've already done.
This classed seemed harder than it should be. The grade is based on 3 tests, quizzes (you won't know how many you will have) and the final. The best way to prepare is to redo the examples he gives in class and do the homework. Questions can be confusing and misleading though. Not the greatest but not horrible. Also he likes to go barefoot in class.
I thought he was hilarious, grading is very tough, but fair, exams have problems that stump you but you will kick yourself when you see how it was supposed to be done. Attendance is important, some notes are posted, some aren't. Too few grades makes the exams very unforgiving, but posted homework and practice exam solutions help a lot.
Professor Dillion's lectures are very clear to follow, and he provides examples of pretty much all the problems you will see on exams/quizzes. He doesn't take attendance; however, I would highly recommend you attend class. Your grade depends on all quizzes, exams (3 in semester and final), and homework. Overall, very manageable!
This is the worse math professor I have ever had. The examples that we did in class did not compare to the type of questions that were on the exams. He took a very long time to grade things. He does not respond to emails, when confronted in class he would say I remember reading that, but he would never respond.
Prof. Dillon is probably the best professor I've taken for math. Homework problems can get tedious, but the test content is much easier than the homework. However, the final exam was much more difficult than any test/quiz I've previously had in this class.
While Mr. Dillon kept class interesting and clearly knew what he was talking about, he also did not give extra credit and would also give tricky exam questions. For example, if given the steps to a question it would be easy but he would give problems that had weird/hard algebra and didn't really test on the information we had learned.
Very tough class, but he explains things decently well and has a good pace. Homework is manageable, but way easier than anything you would see on an exam. Grade is 3 exams and the final. The exams were okay, he posts practices that are relatively similar, but the final was the hardest test I've ever taken. He puts things on there to stump you.
He does not post his lecture notes and takes them only on paper, your entire grade is based on 3 exams, and the homework is not very helpful. I could see this class being better if you have taken physics before because he just assumes everyone has, but without that, you will be lost.
he's interactive and fun. he's also laid back and attendence ins't mandatory. however if you want to do well, it's neccecary. overall his exams are average, if you study the homework and practice tests you should do okay. every now and then an exam will have heavy algebra, but he clearly explains what concepts will be on the exams. loved this class
Made learning calculus bearable. In almost every aspect, he is a model teacher: explaining the reasoning behind concepts, going over a wide variety of problem types, clearly outlining what he expects from his students, and fairly assigning homework. Beyond that he always comes to class ready to teach and clearly loves the subject. Great guy.
Dillon is great. I had him for Calc 2 and while it isn't easy, Dillon's lectures are easy to follow and he answers any questions you have. Go to his office hours because he will help you understand the material. Funny in class and wants to see you succeed. Grade consists of tests/homeworks. I strongly recommend. I ended up taking him for Calc 3!
Geoffrey is a good professor but if you don't have a good foundation in Calculus, his lectures can be extremely hard to follow. Homework, labs, exams, lectures, and quizzes all reflect different content, so you basically have to be prepared for anything that could potentially relate to the unit you're in.
he is a cool guy and explains things well in lecture but beware his practice exams are NOTHING like the test. he's even says hes a bit devious about that but it is a bit frusturating because there's only a few problems on his tests but he throws curveballs on every single one so be very careful cus what you would least expect is going to be there
Very accessible, good lectures that are very similar to questions that are on the test, and generous when grading.
He is a great teacher. The lectures were easy to comprehend, and he's willing to work with you during office hours. He is a very tough grader with tough exams. Exam questions were much harder than anything you would see in quizzes, homework, or practice exams. His failure to prepare students for exams made this an extremely frustrating course.
Despite this being a challenging class, Dillon is a good professor who wants his students to learn the material. I studied really hard for this class to do well, like I would study for 9 hours for each exam. Exams were pretty challenging but pretty sure final was curved. Quizzes were pretty easy and it helps those are weighed more than exams.
His lectures are engaging and informative. He moves at a fast pace, but will stop to answer any questions. The exams are difficult, but as long as you do a lot of practice problems, you can easily make a B or even an A. I was homebound for a week after a car crash, was unable to read or write for a while, and still got a C+. Great guy.
Dillon is amazing. He does a great job connecting new content with prior knowledge and is hilarious. Tests are difficult, but if you study the homework and practice tests you should be fine. He genuinely cares about his student's success and his office hours are very helpful.
I suck at calc, but would 100% take him again. He is great at explaining examples and teaching in general. Def hilarious and good person. He doesn't give curves or extra credit and isn't scared to grade harshly, but again I recommend.
He's very straight to the point and he writes everything on the board for you to copy down. His homework is hard but honestly if you're stuck look up how to do it online and you'll be fine. He gives a lot of partial credit on exams which is nice. Overall I really appreciated how straightforward he made everything seem. I'd recommend!!
Absolutely awful. Would get a 100 on the quiz every week and still got a 54 on the first exam. Tests were not like anything we'd seen in class and insanely hard. I've heard he's better for upper level maths, but for this class DONT DO IT TO YOURSELF
Professor Dillon is hilarious and I really enjoyed going to his lectures. Calc III is a tough subject, but he makes it as easy as possible be providing real examples within his lectures. All his notes are posted online, but going to class gives you an advantage for sure. Only 10% of the course is HW, and the rest is exams. Practice exams provided.
Really fast lectures, which can make looking back at your notes confusing later, but he is really good at answering questions and helping you when you need it. As long as you do the examples he marks as important in class and the homework, you'll do good on the exams.
Hate math in general, but amazing professor. Wish I had another required math course just so I could take his section again.
His lecture notes were so easy compared to every exam in this class. The exams are VERY proof heavy, and questionably related to linear algebra. 3 exams, 3 quizzes, and a final determine your grade for this class. He grades very leniently, but he sort of has to with how difficult the exams are. He doesn't prepare you at all.
Awesome teacher. Hilarious and great sense of humor. Teaches well and is great in office hours. Warning: Study hard for tests, they are harder than the homework/ study guides, but not impossible to get an A on. Easy grader Took him Fall 2023
Awesome. Pretty much the same comments I did about calc 1, but tests are a bit harder
I took him for three semesters, hence the previous two reviews: Calc I H: Fall 2023 Calc II H: Spring 2024 Calc III H: Fall 2024 Vector calculus was another awesome semester with Dr. Dillon
great professor, very passionate, grade is really only four exams, lowest is dropped. half his tests were very representative of material in class. the other were based on proofs we hadn't covered. i never felt prepared for the exams, but id study for hours and did well. if youre good at proofs, this will be easy, if you're not prepare yourself
Professor Dillion is a great lecturer; he makes sure the material is understood and is always willing to answer questions. His notes are great, and he posts them before tests. His tests are hard and require you to fully understand the material and techniques learned. Tests require 2+ proofs each, so be prepared. Overall great, just very hard tests.
His teaching style is very clear and very direct. He writes down every word he says, which makes it so much easier to follow along. Would take him for every math class if I could! He's great at starting new concepts assuming you have no prior knowledge to them at all, which is so helpful! Could not recommend him more! (I took the Honors section)
Not a bad teacher when it comes to lecture material; however, none of the notes, homework, or practice exams given will prepare you for the in-class exams, including the final! He will throw problems with applications of material that have not been covered or provided in any form or practice. Unrelated but he does indeed wear no shoes to class.
Pretty sure when he writes his exams, he writes them while angry. I studied every practice exam, homework question, and lecture note, and still got 60s on two of his exams. It's like being prepared for your driver's test, but then you get thrown into a NASCAR race. Good luck if you have this professor, because man is he hard.
This was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. I did all of the homework, paid attention during lectures, reviewed past exams, and never made anything above a D in the exams. The questions on the exams were not typically similar to the examples and homework done in class, including the final! He's a nice guy, but incredibly difficult.
There's 3 tests and 1 final which make up 90% of your grade, homework is 10%. Practice during lectures and practice exams can't compare to the difficulty level of actual exams, which are often graded harshly. His tests felt impossible to prepare for, but he does go over the questions after.
Professor Dillon is a great professor who makes lectures engaging and truly cares about his students. Exams are much harder than the practice tests, homework, and quizzes, especially the final. He's always willing to help if you ask, so ask questions during exams to clear up confusion and show your understanding.
