Professor Sayre-McCord is excellent! He makes sometimes difficult and heavy material understandable and interesting. He's engaging, witty, and funny. His class and his teaching inspired me to pursue a degree in Philosophy.
sayre-mccord is an amazing teacher and really sparked my interest in philosophy.
VERY good teacher, explained most things well, some unclarity when it comes to the papers, but he makes the topic VERY interesting!
The material is very easy, but he makes the class very hard. Last semester he only gave out A's to 8% of the class. He repeats the same things over and over and over in class as well. He could say all that he has to say in a quarter of the time that it takes him.
He will talk an entire class period and speak on something that could have been summarized in a sentence. It's really frustrating trying to take notes when he talks in circles. It's really hard to try and stay awake in the class when you can't take notes and the material you read is boring also.
Prof. Sayre-McCord is the best lecturer I've ever seen. He gives a probing and subtle discussion of difficult material. This class is an excellent learning experience. (Anyone who thinks he talks in circles or repeats for a lecture what could be said in a sentence clearly misunderstood a lot, and I don't think that was Dr. Sayre-McCord's fault.)
cool guy, makes it easier to understand and more fun
He's a great guy, and really amusing in lecture, but he does teach Philosophy, and that's confusing to begin with. He often repeats himself in lecture, but it's just to reinforce teh concepts. He's a little tough in the grading, but he knows his stuff.
Really enjoyed this class even though I was not looking forward to taking it at all. The material was really interesting.
One of the greatest professors I have had. He truely wants you to learn the material and that your grade should reflect this. he is willing to help. He is so objective and interested in his topic and the he makes the lectures very interesting.
Very nice! Explains difficult material in a way that is understandable. Everything in the readings are reviewed in class.Do well on the multiple choice, its a small portion of your grade that should be easy.GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS, they are extremely helpful on the papers. Sometimes shifts percentages on individual basis to help you.
This class is graded really hard and his lectures are so scattered. The essay prompt for our current paper was two pages long, and all of his questions are extremely wordy and make no sense like that. I wouldn't recommend this class unless you were really interested in philosophy and got some of the more difficult topics.
he's a cool guy, and obviously knows a lot about philosophy... but the class was extremely unstructured and I got nothing out of it. If you want to do even semi-decent you have to go to the review sessions... good luck... this is definitely a hard class
this class was pretty hard..but geoff's a good guy. the TAs are really helpful, review sessions are a must. this class makes you think a lot and you really have to work for a good grade. the class is alright though
Even though this class was challenging, it made you think. It's a philosophy class, it's not going to be easy. The material was interesting but at some times felt like we were ready too much into it. Class is very repetitive and is easy to loose concentration if you're on facebook or something. GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS. Shoot for a B+
really great guy and extremely smart. I totally recommend this class :)
A real class in which you actually have to think. The professor is great, head of the department and knows what he's talking about. You can learn a ton and walk out with at least a B- if you really invest thought into the lectures.
Incredible professor. Gives engaging lectures and challenges you to go beyond a cursory knowledge of the material. Be prepared to spend a lot of time studying for tests and working on assignments, though. In his own words, "This is an introductory class, not an easy one."
I had high expectations for this class, and was thoroughly disappointed within the first week of class. Sayre-McCord's lectures were no help at all in terms of the material as they lacked overall conclusiveness. The TA's were hit-and-miss...hope you get a good one, and if you don't, you're S.O.L. Grading is also tricky/incomprehensive.
While Sayre-McCord is a very good professor and can help you understand the material well, going to lecture is usually a waste of time with 20 minutes of useful instruction and 30 minutes of pointless questions. His class is very hard if you want an A but quite easy to get a B in. Having a high interest in philosophy makes this course a lot easier.
Geoff is one of my favorite professors at UNC. His class is a challenge for sure, but he is a great guy and very understanding. You MUST do the readings and think about the material as well as attend the recitations, which are mandatory. I had Anya Farrenikova as a TA and she was great, but a hard grader. Try hard and ask lots of questions.
The professor definitely knows what he's talking about, & for those who are keen philosophers themselves, the class proves to be enjoyable. However, for those of us who don't enjoy over-analyzing every thought of Aristotle, this course is nothing short of torture. DO NOT take this class if you're just looking to fulfill your philosophy credit.
Geoff is a fantastic teacher! I absolutely loved his Intro to Ethics class and would definitely recommend it as an introduction to philosophy. He makes the material fun and interesting and is a captivating lecturer.
Geoff was a good lecturer, however, he does not grade the work, the TA's do. I don't think my TA was a very fair grader, but hopefully the others are. The class was interesting and forced you to think. I would recommend Geoff for any PHIL class, just watch out for TAs that tell you the wrong information like mine! Good Luck!
His essay prompts are incredibly vague. Be super sure to find out what he wants from you-- you won't be able to find it out by reading the prompts. Overall, a great class, though I thought my TA was better at the teaching. The TAs also do the grading. I would recommend taking this course, but it'll challenge you to really think- so be prepared.
AMAZING, engaging, fun
A nice guy, good lecturer. He is very specific in what he wants in your answers however, which is NOT apparent from the questions. All the work is graded by the TA's, hope that you get a good one! You will have to work extremely hard to scratch an A-. To quote Geoff, "This is an introductory course, not an easy one".
Not an easy A, but you should make a B if you try. 2 Multiple choice tests (easy), 1 essay exam (hard) and two 2500 word + essays. He is a great teacher, but the subject itself is hard and takes a while to comprehend. I would recommend it to fill Philosophy approach.
I would take this class all over again if I could. He teaches the material in a very clear way and made me love philosophy as a science major. The TA's can also make or break this class. John Lawless was an amazing TA, but I heard some of the others weren't as good.
Fantastic lecturer. Great sense of humor, very clear, and obvious mastery in being able to teach such a difficult course. Your success depends on primarily you, but having a good TA noticeably helps.
Geoff is so great. I loved this class. He honestly cares that you love the material as much as he does. His lectures are very clear. Reading is mandatory or you wont know what the flip is going on in lectures. This class made me want to be a Phil major! I love geoff.
Professor Geoff is the best professor that i met. He is extremely smart and nice. He makes the material easy to understand; He tries to make students truly think. However, he tries to make students get as high score as possible. If you do well in tests and not well in paper, he would increase the percentage of tests.
Geoff is the man. He is a brilliant professor and knows his material like nobody else. He will definitely challenge you to think critically, so showing up to lecture is extremely important. Keep up with the readings and don't be afraid to ask questions. Recitations are kind of pointless but you need to go to them. Pretty cool class.
VERY difficult class. DO NOT take if you are just looking to fulfill your philosophy credit. Way too much work is required for a 100 level class. Geoff is a good professor but philosophy is a hard subject and he demands a lot out of you to even squeeze by with a B.
Great class, gets you thinking. Do not expect it to be easy. Lectures are really helpful because he summarizes somewhat difficult readings. Provides a lot of help sessions to ensure success, great guy.
He was engaging and his powerpoints were very helpful in understanding the readings. It is a hard subject and there is a lot of work, so I wouldn't take this class just to fulfill the phil requirement.
Charismatic lecturer, always willing to help. Not the easiest class, but well worth the work.
Its a lot of work but pretty worth it.
A very fair instructor. He seems to genuinely care for the success and well being of his students. Very willing to discuss questions and student's views, and not condescending in the least. A very approachable professor. I really enjoyed his enthusiastic lectures and dedication to his subject.
Geoff is an okay lecturer, but his PHIL 160 lectures are dull and overkill simple concepts. Based on his lectures, I thought I would be fine in his class, but the writing assignments are graded without clear rubrics or guidelines, and I was overwhelmed by the rigorous (and unfairly harsh) grading that my essays underwent.
Engaging class. He talks about the readings during lectures, but he expects you to read and make your own interpretations to use and defend in your essays. It takes a bit to understand what is desired and essays are graded harshly, but TAs give constructive feedback to improve with each essay. There are few grades so doing well on each is key.
Geoff is a great lecturer and really good guy. He's willing to spend time talking to you outside of class if you go to him. The class is thought provoking, but tough to get an A because the grades are primarily large papers. This is not just an easy gen-ed filler. The readings are pretty complex, so reach out to Geoff and TAs. (He has good TAs)
Geoff has good lectures but the class is hard because of the grading. The essays have no grading criteria so you have no idea what you should do to get a decent grade because there is no rubric. The short exams are straight memorization so they are easier than the regular essay exams, which are graded just like the essays assigned for homework.
Professor Sayre-McCord is amazing at what he does and the lectures are very interesting. He does a good job at explaining things in simple terms and uses real life applications. However, the papers are graded very harshly. There are a few quizzes from the readings throughout the semester but not many other grades
Geoff's lectures are excellent and make complicated philosophical theories easy to understand. Coming to class is a must if you expect to do well. If you're just looking to fill the gen-ed requirement, there are probably easier classes, but if you're looking for an intellectually fulfilling philosophy course, this is the one to take.
Geoff lectures really well and is an excellent person in general, but the class itself is hard only because of how harshly the essays are graded. Do not take this class if you are just hoping to fulfill your philosophy gen-ed.
Geoff is the man. His clearly loves teaching and getting students to learn and it shows in his lectures. Lots of work required, but review sessions are held before every major assignment
Don't take this class. Save yourself.
Geoff is a great teacher. He really cares about his students, makes his lectures interesting and funny, and is just a really good speaker. His papers and non-multiple choice tests are VERY difficult, however. You definitively have to read if you want to know what's going on, and the readings are hard. Despite this, I really enjoyed his class.
favorite class this semester! few, but slightly hard assignments, however, he tries very hard to give everyone the highest grade possible by making your best scores weigh more. amazing lecturer that was very good at clearing up the difficult readings. great person, very accessible and friendly outside of class. I will be taking another class w/ him
A witty and authentic professor, Sayre-McCord made lectures dynamic and readings fascinating. However, his flair for the dramatic occasionally affected the objective material of the lesson, leading to concepts being unnecessarily difficult. Regardless, his intelligence, humor, and passion for philosophy make him an invaluable asset to UNC staff.
Geoff is an amazing lecturer, very passionate. There are quite a few textbooks but the reading is not excessive and often quite easy. A few large papers that are graded strictly but if you go to review sessions and office hours to fully understand the concepts you will be fine. Take this class!

He does give great lectures, but attendance isnt required. Still suggest you go to some. You could probably get by by just going to recitations. There was a night or two that required late nights for studying. Overall I got a B- and never went to class. Amazing man. Quizzes are difficult.
This class made me hate Philosophy. The TA's were not helpful and made it impossible to get an A in the class. I would not wish this class on anyone.
He was really nice and genuinely cared about the subject, but most of his lectures went in circles and were unnecessary. I honestly went to lecture maybe once a week because it was pointless. The TAs grade unnecessarily hard and their grading criteria is not clearly defined. I would say this class is an easy B but a hard A.
Geoff is a really cool guy, and you could tell he was very passionate about the class. However, I often got lost during his lectures and found the readings to be boring. I put more effort into those papers than any other assignment I've ever done and still only pulled out low A's on them. Interesting class, but don't take for an easy PH credit!
Great professor if you are passionate about philosophy, but the lectures can be difficult to follow. The assignments are challenging and I had to put more time into this course than any other. I wouldn't take this class again; Geoff is great but the class is incredibly difficult, and there are much easier PH classes out there.
I respect professor Sayre-McCord so much and he has been my favorite lecturer at UNC so far. The material is extremely difficult and he has very high expectations, but I absolutely loved the class. I definitely recommend taking a class with him if you get the chance
Lectures were difficult and hard to follow, several assignments throughout the semester that he does not allow a lot of time for. Nice man, bad class.
He clearly is very knowledgeable about the material and cares a ton about making sure students understand as much as possible. However, the class is large so there is not any one-on-one unless you go to office hours, and even the TAs are confused sometimes. The material is difficult, and he assigns papers over both fall and thanksgiving break.
He is an engaging professor; he incorporates many real-life stories that break up the otherwise very monotonous lectures. However, I found the material to be so difficult that even these examples didn't help to clarify. Classes felt unstructured and it was hard to ever get a grasp on materials. Papers over both breaks with little time to prepare.
Professor Sayre-McCord is an amazing lecturer and person and is very interesting. The readings are very manageable. I liked that PHIL160 had a final paper instead of a typical final exam and that working with peers was encouraged.
Prof Sayre-Mccord was an interesting lecturer, but very long-winded. He could have explained his points in about half the time and in a more clear way. If you're not paying attention in class, easy to get lost. Not many assingments and a VERY UNCLEAR GRADER. I had no idea why I got a 78 on my midterm paper which I thought was very good.
Dr. Sayre-McCord is very passionate about his material. He loves to talk about it. But, it gets to a point where he gets confusing regarding what he actually wants you to get out of a lecture. This class is also deceptively easy. You'll think you're doing fine by doing everything you should be, but then get roasted on a paper.
Professor Sayre-McCord is an amazing person. He's extremely intelligent and entertaining in lectures, and he loves to joke around with students. He offers extra credit opportunities and is very approachable and caring towards students. If I could take this class again, I would. You have to work for your grade, but it's totally worth it. He rocks.
Geoff is the best. His lectures are interesting and he really works to get to know his students and help them succeed. However, philosophy is a lot of work, specifically reading, and I feel like the grading for papers was dependent on which TA you got. He goes over all the reading in class, although sometimes the slides were hard to follow.
If you need a PH gen ed, dont take this class. Its extremely difficult and theres easier options. A lot of reading and lectures were confusing. They say its an intro philosophy class but the material and grading didnt reflect that. Material is interesting but messed up my GPA trying to take an easy PH credit.
Hands down the WORST class I have ever taken by a professor. Professor Sayre-McCord goes down a rabbit hole during lectures which makes it extremely difficult to truly grasp the materials. Also, your grades almost depend completely on the TA you get so be mindful of that. I happened to be very unlucky and get a rude one who graded very hard.
One of the hardest classes I've ever taken. I had to pass/fail the class because as a STEM major, this class was all subjective. The TAs were the graders and anytime I would go to office hours they would be so unhelpful and explain concepts terribly.
I really liked his class, but I took it online and it was lectures pretty much everyday for the whole class. But, he is super funny and there are plenty of opportunities to ask for help or clarification outside of class.
This class was by far the hardest class I have ever taken, but I thoroughly enjoyed learning the material. It was different and made me think. However, if this is your first PHIL class then beware.. it may be an intro BUT it is quite challenging. 50% of your grade are 2 large and very complex papers then the rest is smaller tests and assignments.
Best class I've taken and a solid choice. If you are looking for an easy A, please don't bother yourself. But if you are ready to grow as a person and intellectual, do and must take this class. My advice: the extra credit is a must, which directly adds 2% to your course grade. A for this class is 94. TA does the grading. Do well on papers. Take it!

Geoff is amazing. He goes over time in lectures really often because he gets sucked into peoples' questions. If you take this class GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS. Even if you don't have a specific question it helps so much to listen to more discussion, especially before exams and the midterm/final essays. Super interesting but not an easy A.
If you are already super interested in the concept of moral philosophy, then maybe this is the class for you. But If you're not then save yourself the inevitable migraine and take something else for the gen ed credit. Geoffs lectures are entertaining and I had a great TA, but it's honestly not worth it. This class made me realize I hate philosophy.
The content of this class is confusing, so going in I was terrified. But Geoff's is the best lecturer I've experienced, and I was thrilled that that he allowed me to go into each paper with clear understanding; I could write them based on the lectures alone if I needed to skip reading. He's super accessible outside of class/always in office hours.
Geoff is a great person, and gives enjoyable lectures. He is awesome about answering questions in class, even with over 100 people in the lecture hall, and does his best to make jokes and tell stories. However, this class was the bane of my existence and receiving an A was IMPOSSIBLE. If you like philosophy, he is your guy but be prepared to write
Despite a running time of 2 and a half hours once a week, Geoff filled each lecture with thoughtful conversation, humorous observations, and thorough literary analysis. The hardest and most thought-provoking philosophy course I've taken at UNC, yet I would do it again with Sayre-McCord
WARNING: If you just want a philosophy credit, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I'm pretty sure some people call this a weed out class for actual philosophy majors. I thought Geoff was super interesting and I enjoy lectures. It is definitely not easy to receive a high A on papers (which are your entire grade).
I loved this class and found it very interesting. However, this was the hardest class of my semester. It is not only challenging, but extremely lecture heavy. But, Professor Geoff is an AMAZING professor and human being. He makes lectures interesting, keeps you awake, and on your toes. Not an easy A whatsoever. Missing lecture puts you behind.
This class is atrocious. DO NOT, under any circumstances, take PHIL 160 with Sayre-McCord to get your PH gen ed. He's a nice guy and all, but his lectures are nearly impossible to follow and the subject material is extremely abstract. Not to mention, he assigns papers at the very last minute and you are forced to work on them over breaks!! Avoid.
I think the instructor is a wonderful person and cares a lot about students, but I would highly advise taking this class unless you are a philosophy major or someone who is interested in the topic. The papers are brutal and quite harshly graded, and papers are due over the break, which may make the class unenjoyable to some. Take another PH credit.
Geoff is a fantastic lecturer. His talent is not questionable. However, this class is mistakenly marketed as a beginner's philosophy course. To take this course, and succeed, you either need a substantial background knowledge in philosophy or you need to read every reading thoroughly 10+ times. The class is difficult with little reward, Geoff is ok
Geoff is very qualified and a nice dude. That said, even If you come in liking philosophy and are ready to work, this class is BRUTAL. Grades are based almost entirely on papers, which are graded harshly. Lecture is interesting most of the time but isn't super focused IMO. The difficulty makes it feel like a lot of work with little to no reward.
Geoff and the TAs are so vague when it comes to grading and I would never expect to score more than a 95 on an assignment, which is rough when the A cap is a 94 for him. Grading does not seem to be super consistent between sections, but it is still tough nonetheless. He's a nice and funny guy, but sometimes he gets very off track during lectures.
Do not take PHIL160 just to fulfill a GE. I am a philosophy major and would not have been able to get anything out of the class had I not previously had familiarity with the texts. It's impossible to do well without getting a nice TA and putting in an insane amount of work. Not worth at all, plenty of better introductory phil courses.
Professor Sayre-McCord is passionate about philosophy, and most days his lectures are quite interesting. However, neither he nor TAs tell you much about the writing assignments or papers- the instructions are convoluted, their answers to questions are all inconsistent, and the grading is totally nebulous. Participation and reading matter.
First and foremost! Just don't take Jackson as your TA. DON'T TAKE JACKSON AS UR TA. As one of the comments says, Geoff likes to go into a rabbit hole and go on and on forever. You barely get anything out of the lectures unless you have a clear idea about what is being discussed in the book. Yes, the class is graded by few things. RUN. Don't take!
DO NOT take this class to fulfill your PH gen ed. I got lucky by getting a B- in it with the amount of work I did, but I'm warning you: this workload is heavy. Geoff is good at lecturing but he goes off on tangents a LOT. The readings are difficult to understand and grading is very vague based on your TA. It's a lot of work. Be prepared to write.
Taking this class was definitely beneficial in the long run, but it also wasn't easy and was very in-depth (something I wasn't prepared for from an intro class). Geoff was a good lecturer, but the assignments in the class do require you to to spend a lot of time thinking and understanding the concepts/theories. The review sessions help!
Class was so hard but Prof. did his best to make it manageable. Super personable and funny, sometimes a little disorganized but it was fine. Philosophy isn't my thing, but really liked the guy--very smart and obviously cares for his students and wanted to talk with us all. Fav. professor so far.
Geoff should not be teaching philosophy to beginners. This was my first philosophy class, so I was expecting more effort in teaching me the material. In his lectures, he often goes on tangents and he is difficult to reach. On assignments, even the TAs seemed confused about the directions. He actively seems to want his students to fail!
Professor Geoff was the best lecturer I've ever had. He walks around the lecture hall and engages the students every class. There is a ton of analytical reading, but the TAs are helpful.
For some reason, this guy would not mic himself in our huge lecture hall, so it was very difficult to hear everything he was saying because he would also walk around a lot. I don't think that this class should be an introduction to philosophy. The professor also seemed nice, but made some odd remarks to me.
Great professor, incredibly caring, & hilarious. Despite lots of fun tangents & confusing concepts, Geoff & the TAs are incredibly helpful to encourage comprehension of topics by hosting multiple study sessions prior to due dates & tests. Lots of reading & writing= a few all-nighters due to tough grading. Still a great class that I'd take again!
Geoff is one of my favorite people, and just great to talk to. Classes can be kind of hit or miss. Sometimes the discussions are fascinating, sometimes it's just bad hot take after bad hot take and it's hard to sit through. Honestly, class would be better if Geoff lectured more, because he's just that great.
Sayre-McCord's course was not a great experience for me. I put effort in the course but often didnt feel it mattered how hard I tried. His grading is subjective and often times confusing. He is intelligent and great to listen to, but take this at a risk to your gpa. My biggest complaint is that he was hard to reach outside of class by email
Take this class if your GPA or sanity is too high. Thought that it being cross-listed as ECON would be related to econ: NO. Mandatory readings 40+pages, and 200+words reflections every time before class. Super intensive midterms. The overall class makes me doubt my intelligence. By far the most stressful class I've taken.
Geoff is most definitely the most passionate professor I have ever had. That being said, he makes the class challenging. Be ready to read, analyze, and apply all concepts in a discussion-based format. However, by investing in the material, this class is extremely rewarding intellectually. Give it a shot!
Look, this is not an easy class. Anyone can, with enough thought and effort, do well in this class. You do not need any background in philosophy. Please do not be tempted to skip reading assignments.
PHIL160 with Dr. Sayre-McCord was the hardest but most rewarding class I've taken at UNC. Lectures are so interesting and thought-provoking but assignments are very demanding. It is possible to do well with thought and effort, especially if philosophy interests you. I also never really read required books, most material was covered in lecture.
Geoff is FANTASTIC, genuinely one of my favorite professors ever. He's super engaging and expects you to also engage with the material. Grading is tough but fair- you really just have to figure out how to write what he's looking for. Go to the review sessions and ask questions and you'll be good to go. Would HIGHLY recommend. if you're interested.
Sayer-McCord is obviously very knowledgeable and smart. Yet, he consistently was a confusing lecturer and made the ideas discussed much more complicated than they needed to be. He also would not let us have our computers out or take notes which I did not find conducive to learning the material.
Geoff is one of the most amazing people ever; this does not mean he's a perfect professor. Often his desire to give each student individual attention will interfere with his ability to attend to the whole class. Any one-on-one conversation with him will push you to think more deeply. You owe it to yourself to take a class with him if you can.
Claims that he understands that this class is full of first-time/first-year students or people who have never taken a philosophy class, but then refuses to give an A unless you are Socrates or Aristotle themselves. Does not do a good job at communicating and establishing baseline for the TAs.
DON'T TAKE...genuinely one of the worst teachers I've ever had. Boring lectures, weekly quizzes that confuse students and TAs, incessant rambling about irrelevant things during class. Essays are near impossible to do well on, and Geoff doesn't care. NOT an into-level course. Avoid the stress and take another class.
I wouldn't say it is an intro-level phil class for COMPLETE beginner. But if you at least have read some phil related books before or have some sense on how philosopher think you will be fine! Content is hard but not unmanagable. I would also suggest people who considering taking this class have a previous experience in writing humanities essay.
This class sucks...not a beginner level class at all. Geoff and TAs don't offer solid help for ANY assignments, and unfortunately there aren't enough points in the class to recover if you get a bad grade on one of the major assignments. Readings are dense and boring and don't even help that much because Geoff has the most confusing exams ever.
Really bad...just took my exam today after studying for 7-8 hours and attending several review sessions and still got a 76. Geoff, his TAs, and his exam questions are confusing and make things so much more difficult than they need to be. Do not recommend this class, definitely not for beginners.
Not a good teacher...do not take! He is confusing and boring.
Worst teacher I've ever had, listen to the comments for this class
Awful professor. Not an intro level class. Do. NOT. Take. Class is boring and near impossible to get an A in (unless you have PhD level experience with tedious philosophy).
Do NOT recommend. Class focuses HEAVILY on tedious philosophical works that McCord explains in the vaguest terms possible while using dated powerpoints. His lectures are dull, unhelpful, and frequently feature tangents unrelated to the material. The class is NOT beginner friendly and the TAs are unhelpful/awkward, too. Save yourself the stress.
Clearly a very intelligent man, but not one who is qualified to teach this class. It's almost as if he physically cannot make this class an intro-level one, even though it is marketed as such. He makes things very confusing when they don't need to be and the TAs are often confused with his directions/assignments. Don't take this class.
Never ever ever ever ever take his class. Draft for the final essay is due in 4 days and he still has not released the prompt. Awful teacher, awful class, awful experience. DO NOT TAKE.
Geoff is contradicting in his lectures compared to what he wants on the questions. He does not allow a TA to give higher then a 95 on any paper. His logic makes no sense and he often goes over class time because of his tangent
Wow. Just wow. One of the WORST teachers I've ever had the displeasure of having. PLEASE spare yourself the frustration and stress and take another course taught by a different professor who cares for their students and doesn't market a class as "intro-level" class when it is most certainly NOT.
Not good, not interesting, not helpful, not coherent, NOT WORTH YOUR TIME.
TA's are confused, and he refuses to give any student a grade higher than a 94 on any assignment. NOT an intro level course. Do not take unless you want to spend far too much time on confusing readings with 0 help from professors or TA's. Do not take.
He seems like a really nice person, but he's a very difficult professor. Even if you study hard and know the concepts with your whole chest, he will purposely word his assignments and exams to trick you. Like wording his options in a way that's hard to distinguish. Also during lectures, it's just a whole lotta blab, Nothing makes sense.
Really just a terrible professor all around. Lectures, assignments, tests, essays...all of them are needlessly confusing and are not beginner level in the slightest. Avoid the stress and take another class, because Geoff will not try even one iota to make this class an entertaining or rewarding one. Would give this class a 0/5 if I could.
Professor rambles during class without clearly explaining the material. I depended on the discussion section with my TA in order to understand what was going on in the class. Would not take again and do not recommend.
Professor mostly rambles during lectures and slideshows are fitting but very confusing. Quizzes are only 1-3 questions, which are difficult if you did not analyze the readings. My only hope in this class was my TA. This was one of my harder classes and i'm a stem major...
This class is not representative of an entry level philosophy class. The tests are complicated and the questions are always too confusing, despite how in depth you thought you read the long chapter readings. He also said himself that he does not give any grade over a 95, and most of his papers are graded between 50-80 according to the TAs.
Fantastic lectures. Main things were 2 MCQ midterms and 2 phil papers. Expectations could be confusing at first, but go to review sessions and talk to him, it really helps! The 2nd test and 2nd midterm was weighed more if done better, so don't worry if the first one didn't turn out well. Would recommend if interested in ethics.
Geoff does not make this couse titled "introduction to moral theory" an introduction course, and he has stated this in class. Our papers worth 50% of the grade cannot be more than 94-95, and he gives 3 question quizzes he claims to curve (but doesn't) which drops grades. End of year grade was a letter different on canvas and connect carolina.
I can assure you this class is NOT worth your time. Geoff is an awful, boring lecturer who goes on unhelpful tangents often. Grading standards are unclear, essays and tests are unnecessarily confusing, and overall this is not a beginner level class (even though it's marketed as such). Your only hope for doing well is your TA. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Got an A and still hated every minute of this class. My only saving grace was my TA (thank you Felix). Geoff just rambles on incessantly in his lectures, clears nothing up, and then expects you to understand this material as if you were Aristotle himself. He is a subpar professor and I'd strongly recommend taking another class.
The lectures were interesting, but sometimes hard to follow. He also doesn't let you use any kind of technology during class, so notes have to be handwritten. Every time we had a paper to write, he wouldn't release the prompt until the week it was due, so we would be given like 4 days to write 2,000 words. He assigned homework over the weekend too.
Geoff is a great lecturer, and he does a great job of making it clear why the topics he is bringing up are relevant to the student. However, this is definitely not an intro level class, and even the TAs disagree sometimes. You are graded on a few things. It is also hard to understand the grade weights. Asking for feedback really makes a difference!
Unnecessarily difficult. I only got an A because my TA was amazing and if yours isn't, it's very difficult to understand the course. Interesting class but tests and papers are confusing and little guidance is given by Geoff. Prompt is withheld and then you're given three days to write 1,500+ words. TAs aren't allowed to give scores above 95 either.
Professor Sayre-McCord is obviously brilliant and a great person, but I have to agree with the previous comments that this class is NOT for beginners. I'm a philosophy major, and even I had trouble with it. The grading policies are not clear, it is hard to stay engaged, and review sessions DO NOT help (TAs will give different answers)
Sayre-McCord is a really kind and knowledgeable person, but I wouldn't recommend this class. It's marketed as an intro-level class, but it's incredibly complex. The readings are almost impossible to understand, the gradings are unnecessarily harsh, and he gives you practically no guidance on how to write a philosophy paper.
Professor Sayre-McCord cares a lot about this subject, however, sometimes so much that the details we actually need to know get confused. Definitely go to the review sessions before the exams, however, he doesn't give the TA's much guidance so they sometimes get confused and give the wrong answers to things.
Professor Sayre-McCord has made this class far more unforgiving than need be. You will face difficult essay exams for which you will not be prepared by lectures or TAs, and reading exams designed to trick you. I would (maybe) reccomend PHIL160 to a second or third year PHIL major, but if you are considering taking it for the gen-ed, STEER CLEAR!
This professor has genuine care towards the subject and his students, but I find his lectures to be confusing and hard to follow. He insists on handwritten notes to decrease distraction, but I find that this idea only makes it harder for students who rely on computers to take notes. The guidelines for essay grading are unclear and inconsistent.
Geoff's class is highly engaging, but quite challenging. The readings can be dense, and the grading rubrics aren't always clear. Unstuck ai helped me prepare for exams, alongside review sessions. Worth taking if you're up for the challenge.
This class is NOT an intro class. If you are doing this to cover a focus capacity, don't do it. The readings are extremely confusing, and the professor doesn't know how to explain at an intro level, so it doesn't help. You have recitations that are supposed to help you, but if you don't get a good TA, you are even more lost (which happened to me).
What everyone else is saying is true - this class is overly difficult for an intro. Professor is a nice guy, but getting an A was extremely difficult, especially considering the unclear and non-existent grading rubric for in-class essay-exams (which are timed). Due to the stress of this class, many come out more unethical.
Had a really hard time in the class. Constantly felt confused by the lectures and heard similar reviews from classmates. The content is pretty intense and the grading criteria is completely different depending on the TA. Geoff is a pretty nice guy though, but this definitely should not be an intro level course.
