grumpy, dislikes students, has no office hours, tries to make tests hard
Funny, but sort of not useful, in a textbook style of way.
Great rapport with students, wish he WROTE notes rather than that powerpoint....
clear notes on powerpoint, somewhat entertaining
SANTA CLAUSE!!!!!!!!
easy. nice guy. boring lectures.forgetful
Halleiluya!!!
Easy midterm but watch out for the final. His notes are terrible.
Very Clear notes, very helpful, easy midterm, inorganic chapter was last minute
mid-term questions are reasonable and notes are clear

SANTA CLAUS!!!!....heheh
At least I stay awake for the most part!
He made us all buy a new textbook...
Nice guy, funny, clear and helpful
The best!!!
This guys is really great, funny, approachable, and effective in teaching

Santa Claus knows his stuff, but I just can't stay awake in his class!

big fat liar
SANTA CLAUS!! Very good teacher but he goes way too fast. Somebody give this guy a chill pill. All in all, one of the best profs I've had so far.
One of the most enthusiastic profs I've had. Teaches somewhat fast; difficult to keep up without online notes.
Very funny. Teaches very well, but tests are hard!!!

He's a nice Santa Claus.
Clear, dedicated, and doesn't mind joking around a little...He's really awesome
Hard to keep up in class.
Best in teaching Chem 121/123 since he wrote the book. Quizzes are kinda tough and makes mistakes in his lecture but you learn lots.
good prof. clear, funny, easy to understand, and goes over things well. don't bother printing the onling notes it's a waste of paper.
SANTA CLAUS! somewhat hard to follow in class, but online notes help( especially i m ususally late). MT somewhat difficult.
the best prof i've had in my first year..very enthusiatic
BEST PROF for CHEM 121/123 students! GO SANTA!
BEST PROF for CHEM 121/123 students! FUNNY CLASS and USEFUL NOTES
He is one of the nicest profs I have ever met in UBC. Ho! Ho! Ho!

ho ho hot
knows how to teach and entertain...i changed my term two schedule just to get him for chem again
great prof and absolutely cares about his students... definitely not out to get you. pre-reading quizzes can be hard at times, but it'll only benefit you in the end by doing them.. get him for Chem 123 if you can... HO HO HO
awesome notes...you might fall asleep in class but not a big deal - everything's online. Gotta love him - great prof.
His a great prof, always Jolly, makes interesting jokes about the material. Notes are good, but he does go a little fast with the powerpoint presentations.
mr. santa claus~
Very nice guy that tries to inject humour in his lectures. As annoying as his pre-reading quizzes may get from time to time, it really keeps you from falling behind. I would have him as a prof again if I could.
Wow easy course I slacked off for the whole term and got an A-, nice prof. Dont bother taking notes in class they are on the web.
Eh, I passed, so he must have done something right ^~
This is not an easy course but fortunately I have Herring. Funny, never rejects his students, teaches well, one of my fav profs.
Very, VERY enthusiastic, and it's contagious. The only thing I didn't like was how all his lectures were done on powerpoint - it got a little boring
resembles santa clause~ ^^ Relaxing lectures yet learning the key points. Better understanding since no time is spent on copying notes.
Great prof. Very enthousiastic, very clear. One of my fav profs.
A very good prof
He dances in class!!! what a guy! I love him! He makes chem fun!
He likes to use the previous year's final for his midterm, so it makes it a little harder. If you like print out notes, this is your prof, but if you don't it's almost impossible to take good quality hand-written notes
He's a pretty good teacher. The pre-reading quizzes are really annoying but they keep you on your toes. His notes are really helpful, you could just print them right off.
Very clear and goes at a nice pace.
ya funny goofy guy, but that's not what I pay for...His powerpoint presentations confused the class beyond imagination while he rambled on assuming he was teaching grad students.
A good prof, and an even nicer person. He's the type of prof who would go to great lengths for students. My favourite first year prof BY FAR. Thanks Dr. H.!
Best prof in first year chem courses. Enuf said.
His notes are very long, we need concise notes! And he doesn't explain how to use the equations as if we are all math geniuses. geez
Great professor; He uses his hand-held, coordless mouse while walking around to draw on the power-point presentations. This can be quite entertaining. Really fun guy.
Great prof. Probably the best by far. I'm still in first year though, but still, Great prof.
He's an amazing prof. Looks like Santa too :P. Since he helped write the chem 121 textbook he knows his stuff, and is very helpful with after class questions. He also LOVES powerpoint...classes are interesting because of the powerpoint. Great prof...take him if you can, hes funny too.
Amazing prof. Love powerpoint..everything else has been said. take him if you can, hes great
What a great lecturer. Powerpoint presentations were very descriptive, note-taking was a non-issue, and he KNEW his stuff. Plus, he's got a great sense of humour and likes to make his lectures fun. What more could you want?
Herring is an awesome prof. He explains things so very well in such a concise manner. I definitely recommend taking his course...he is funny, and makes class interesting.
does not show up to office hours. does not respong to emails. he just says "come see me in class"
The Pre-Reading Quizzes can be a pain, but otherwise, a pretty good prof. Really easy to understand especially cuz he posts all his powerpoint slides. Yay for Santa!

Very likeable prof, funny at times. ( I loved that pig slide LOL) Good job santa! :-)
The sean connery of the chem department has the clever ones laughing at 2001 a space oddesy jokes and the simple ones laughing at pig slides...something for everyone.
Nice prof! posts notes online, gives tons of examples, helpful during office hrs. Arguably the best prof for chemistry
Dr. Herring was the Santa Clause of Chemistry! I actually looked forward to 9am lectures.
He has extremely detailed powerpoint presentations that guide you step by step, is very knowledgeable (wrote part of the textbook), tells interesting side-facts, never falls behind schedule and still often lets students off early to catch the bus home. He uses the PRS (not for marks). Midterm and final were tricky but were common for all sections.
Very decent prof, but sometimes he goes by the slides too quickly dont'even have time to copy down main points. However still a good prof, he was one of the authors of the course textbook. Must be very smart, just that I can't help but to fall into sleep in his morning lectures. Very tempting. =) Oh, very humourous guy too.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHhhh what a lovely proff
He is a wonderful prof, he makes every lecture worth while for attending. He makes really cute jokes and makes everyone laugh. I really do recommend having him as a prof if possible.
he's really really funny! he makes the lectures fun by cracking up jokes or dancing around. i recommend you guys to take his class, you wont regret it!
Great Prof!
Amazing professor...he actually made me look forward to going to class and learning chem. I suggest everyone to have him for a fun and good time at chem
What can I say cept SANTA CLAUSE :) he is awesome but i dont like power point
This guy is funny and hilarious. Uses a lot of powerpoint. Sometimes I think he goes way too fast, but then he's also pretty clear. We never get behind like some other sections. Recommended.
omgsh best prof ever - he had a sense of humour which led one into going further into the topic. If it weren't for all his pre-reading quizzes and stuff, I wouldn't have been able to catch up with the work. Good amount of pressure, but still teaches you thorough enuf in his notes so you understand the topics and stuff.
Amazing!! Dr. Herring genuinely cares that you understand what he's talking about and his enthusiasm somehow makes chem interesting. Make sure to get in one of his sections!
Absolutely loved him. Great powerpoints, great demos, great personality. Erudite and amusing. Also he reminded me of Santa Claus! haha
Very clear and detailed Powerpoint presentation with helpful example questions. Dr. Herring is an extraordinary lecturer who gets his point across clearly and concisely. He was my prof for both 121 and 123 and it's been awesome! Highly recommended!
He is a really good prof. His regular on-line quizzes keep you up with the course load. He seems nice and tries to make the lecture fun.
I think that he is one of the best chem121 profs. he keeps things interesting and fun. keep up with his pre-reading quizzes and ask him questions after class, and he'll be there to help, and it will help you succeed in his class. His powerpoint does get annoying but he posts up "filled" in slides on his webpage. Great guy, but HARD COURSE!
This guy is hilarious. He's been teaching at UBC since 1963 and knows the course - as well as what was taught in the BC school system chem 12 curriculum - back to front. He is very available during officec hours and is a very effective prof. Highly recommended. I have never laughed so hard in a class in my life!
geoff herring was an amazing first year chem prof. unfortunately he has finally retired but i assure you that you could not have had anyone better introduce you to first year ubc chemistry. i didn't fully utilize the practice quizzes but they were a great resource for sure. midterm was fair, final was a challenging. overall a great prof!
a very difficult course, but since everyone needs it this is a good prof to have. He is a quirky Brit who is hopeless with technology and very lovable.
realli good prof...hes realli funny.....the class is always laughing...i also like the idea of online quizes...we can take them anywhere n anytime..also..it's a good way to check if we r keeping up....i would say he's my best prof in my first term/first yr in ubc
he teaches clearly. the presentation is interesting.
He is quite funny, helpful and really knows what he is talking about. Also, he posts his lecture slides which helps in case you miss a class. I would highly recommend him!
Santa Clause!! Is a good prof, goes a little fast in class, but he's still decent. Love the idea of online quizzes that we can take at home. Hope to have him again for chem 123 next term.
Online quizzes were sort of irrelevant to the material, and you had to read every part of the textbook to get them, but you had unlimited time to finish them. Lectures were hilarious, midterm was easy, final was hard. Lots of PRS questions. MEMORIZE THE RXNS! There were pretty cool demos, we got to see many explosions. Overall, fun class. Good prof
Herring's back to teaching! And yes, he's the best chem prof to go to for chem 121/123. After all, he's one of the authors of the textbook! Very funny and knows his stuff..he can just go fast on the slides but that's okay because he posts all his notes/lectures. Exams are difficult but you can't control those.
He taught phys. chem. for the 1st half of chem123... very funny teacher but at the same time, very helpful. He posts his ppt slides online but you should go to class anyway... pre-reading quizzes took some time but forced you to read the text (kinda)... lots of office hours so you have no excuse to fail (who loves Herring? We love Herring!)
Amazing prof. very helpful and very funny. right up there with rud**** as the best profs at UBC.
JUST to say, THE BEST PROF EVER in first year!!! Great teaching skills, great personality and FANTASTIC ACCENT hahahaha he reminded me of Santa ... overal AMAZING!!!!
amazing amazing prof...everyone calls him santa claus and he is jolly just like him. he made the class very enjoyable and definately was worth going to. he explained the material very well and i ended up with a 89% for the midterm..final was hard though..
Amazing prof. Very clear on what's expected (he wrote the textbook) and very precise in the way he teaches. Great sense of humour and just an outstanding man.
I had him in Chem 123, decent back then, but Chem 233 is another story. Messy as #@!$. Can't follow his slides at all, not to mention he always forgets to put up half the slides and we're left scrambling to copy down notes at his excessive pace. Needs to me way more organized for a course like this, mediocrity is not enough for Chem 233.
His notes are SO MESSY! If you miss a lecture, don't expect anything out of the after class notes; the chances are they're even worse. He really needs to minimize on the circling and actually writing things down. maybe hes good at teaching chem 121/123 but def. NOT chem 233. go to jackies lecture if you can or get jackies notes.
Herring means well. He really does. But honestly, his notes are useless and incoherent (a page of molecules circled 100 times, with the comment, "It does! :)" is not helpful) He got fundamental concepts reversed (esp with acids and bases) which for 233 is dangerous. I would pre-read, go to class, and then leave more confused than when I went in!
First point I would like to make, this course is NOT easy. You have to study on your own time and make supplemental notes. I had Dr. Herring for Chem 121 as well and he was one of my best first year profs. I was very happy to have him again in 233 as I knew his teaching style. Take your own notes in a timely manner and use office hours.
If you get Herring for Organic Chem, try your best to switch out of his section into Jackie's. He has no idea what he is teaching (seems like he has to learn the concepts himself before teaching it to the class). He's the worst prof I've ever had so far
I had him for both CHEM233 and CHEM123. He's not that bad... but I don't feel that organic chemistry was his forte, as he was very careless when doing examples in class. He's a fun prof (likes to giggle) but don't expect to rely on him too much for teaching. For the exam, I didn't find his notes very helpful.
Pre reading quizzes cover materials 5 weeks in advance of the lectures... You can get lost easily if you are not familiar with the contents.
Despite the enormous class size, he was able to teach effectively. The midterm and final were difficult but fair and overall the class was solid.
Very nice guy, but his lectures didn't really do much aside from go over the notes. I would say to go to class for i-clicker marks and especially if you don't get a concept in the reading (it can be worded a bit tricky). His exam wasn't too easy or too hard, just really fair. His online notes are terrible though. Make notes off of the textbook.
Very kind and he's so happy teaching!
He was not effective at all. Quizzes were 5 classes in advance, and his lectures barely helped at all. Honestly, if you can self teach, then take his class. Besides clicker marks, there is no point in attending. He is also unreasonable as in if you email him 5 times for failing the course by 1 mark, he won't respond, nor will he give you that mark.
his exams are rigorous, but they are very fair. Go to lectures. He is very clear in his explanations.
Lectures were ineffective overall; a lot of people actually skived or fell asleep during class. He never zooms in on his written notes so it was difficult for everyone besides the front row to read. Pre-reading quizzes were extremely difficult and confusing. I passed but it was only because I looked for a tutor to help me towards the end.
Boring/NOT HELPFUL/scary/confusing/useless. Expect to learn from the textbook alone, which ironically, he helped write. AVOID HIM
Extremely ineffective professor. Makes concepts seem way more complicated than they actually are. Teaches only the basics in class. I learned basically everything included in this course from the internet outside of lecture.
People are far too harsh on my man Herring. If you do the pre-readings and go to class, he makes the concepts much more clear. The exams (though relatively low averages) are very, very fair. He is also very helpful if you ask in person.
You don't really need the textbook. He's very friendly and the lectures clear up everything, but he's not the best at answering questions. Lectures are interesting, especially if you have friends to work with. I thought he was funny, but I'll admit his style is probably not for everyone.
The bad: Prof. Herring is passionate about chemistry, and it was evident in his lectures. He explained concepts well, and better yet, he explained what would be on tests and what we "had to remember". He provided plenty of practice midtermsfinals. No surprises on the exams. The bad: nothing really; sometimes you feel a little sleepy in lectures
He's hilarious and his lectures are fun. He's not very good at answering questions though.
Lectures and lecture slides are too confusing. He only goes through the basics. I would say the book and reading materials are really good. Tests are fair and not at all a surprise.
very unorganized lecture slides full of errors, tedious online assignments that are in no way close to the exam format, he tried to keep everyone entertained and interested first semester but completely gave up on giving a clear lecture second semester. be prepared to spend hours studying the material (get a tutor if possible)
I'm not a big chem person, so can that make me bias. It's hard to teach chem, and if you didn't understand chem in high school, you will have a terrible time understanding it with Prof Herring at uni too. He's passionate about chem, but his lectures don't make sense and he is even confusing to talk to. Referring to the textbook won't help either.
