He's a really fun guy. Lots of tie stories to tell you almost everyday. His class is kind of fun, but the test is not that easy. But if you do pay attention to his class everytime, you have no problem to get an A.
He told lots of stories that have nothing to do with what you are learning. Tests are really difficult & a lot of the test material is not covered in class.
Mr. Hirsch is not the best math teacher but I guarantee you will pass his course with atleast a "c". The good thing about him is that you can do extra hw problems which boost your grades. If you attend class regularly then that also helps.
HE wastes a lot of time on dumb stories and doesn't focus on the math untill half the class is over. His tests are very difficult because he wastes sooo much time on tie stories and humorless jokes.
This guy can not teach. He thinks he's funny with his stories about his ugly ties but he just bores the entire class even more. He's not very good at explaining and expects his students to know what he's talking about before they actually learn it.
You will know more about his ties than you will about Math.......
He revels in his own eccentricity too much to focus on the subject at hand. He is infatuated with Ohlone's no-smoking policy and spends class time preaching. It makes me want to START smoking. He also wastes class time telling stories. This is MATH!!!
Not a good teacher at all. Plan on getting a tutor or teaching yourself. Not clear with teaching, and unhelpful. Has lots of tie stories that take up about half of class, but still expects you to do homework before he attempts to confuse you and go over it. WASTE OF TIME!!!ok attitude, bad teacher
I love his class. Yes, Mr. Hirsch does tell much tie jokes over and over again. And it does waste a lot of the time in class with it, but he means well. I feel he is clear on his teaching, you just got to pay attention. I got A in his class. :D
he is the nicest guy you'll ever meet. he tells jokes that make you want to go budmp bum psch. you a rimshot. they are corny, but still funny. he makes calls as laid back as he can. he is obsessed with his ties, but it's a fun touch to class. he spends 50-50 on tie stories and math. make class barab
Please quit teaching and sell ties, you might make a lot of money.

he is very nice and cute. but he doesn't know how to teach. you need to learn by yourself. he spends almost the whole class on handing out paper and his ties...you might be pass this class if you do all in-class activity and homework (include extra credit)
He is a very funny man but very unhelpful. I ended up getting a D in the class even after going to tutoring on a regular basis. Yet a year later I'm still on his email list for when he does stand up comedy. Leave me alone already!
Math sucks! Honestly I can't stand it. Professor Hirsch makes it fun. He adds humor to a not so humorous subject. He also lets his students only do every other odd for homework. And he subtracts the lowest test score. If you want to learn and hear jokes at the same time I suggest taking him.
Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! He does not make math clear at all! His personality is okay, but his teaching is horrible! When you ask questions, he'll explain the problem for a few minutes and still would not have answered your question. Please take my advice and go to another teacher!

Boring class. The ties...OMG ! In our 50 minute, 3x per week class we got 15 minutes of tie stories, 20 minutes of instruction, and 15 minutes of plugs for his comedy shows. Didn't really need him, he just worked the exapmles from the book on the board. Glad it's over. But the tests weren't all that hard, it was easy to get an A.
Corny jokes but makes class not so boring
Rather funny, sometimes slow.

He's a very nice teacher. Tie stories are very amusing. He makes learning fun! :)
uhhh....he teaches kinda slow and usually i learn the math myself, but his tie stories are amusing, which makes the class not so boring.
Mr. Hirsch is a pretty cool teacher.
Time goes by so slowly in his class. But his tie stories are entertaining. He's basically easy to understand. His tests are hard in my opinion. I hated the class but he made it easier than I expected. Although, some things he tends to overexplain and some things he barely explains. But overall he's a good teacher.
Proffesor Hirsch is a good teacher. His teachings are effective and he's very funny. If you ever get the chance to be in his class, don't miss out on his tie story!
Mr. Hirsch is a fun teacher who adds humor into his math classes.
M rely in love with math. To get A in his class, I do whatever I can. He is 2cool, a little crazy and funny person. The way he teaches us looks as if we are playing games and learning everything. He has easy answer to toughest problems. His tie stories are so cool that I don’t want to miss any class u know he has a sharp tie 2 ;) – It IZ fuN --
funny jokes so the class is not boring. Good techniques of teaching, very easy to understand. Tests are not long, but a lot of homeworks (up to four hours to finish).
the class was pretty fun and it was very interesting. thanks for helping us and teaching well so we learn a lot.
The class was pretty fun and it was interesting. His teachings are effective and clear. So I never miss the class.
yeah. the class was very useful and was fun too. the tie stories were awesome, and your tie collection is crazy. i learned a lot and am happy i took the class.
Mr Hirsch is an interesting and humorous, but when it comes to math , i tend to fall asleep during his lectures.
I think he's a good and funny teacher. But i tend to fall asleep real quickly because of some of the ways he explains the problems and the steps it's hard to get and understand it. But i like his tie stories, very interesting.
Mr Hirsch is a very exciting and humorous teacher. When i am tired and losing my concentration his stories and jokes crack me up! :) He makes being in a summer class very fun and i enjoy his teachings and creditabilty on teaching young students. Hey! you cant forget bout his wonderful TIE stories!! I recommend him as your math teacher! :)
MR. HIRSCH IS A COOL TEACHER, HE TRIES VERY HARD TO HELP HIS STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THE SUBJECT, HE IS VERY EASY TO TALK TO AND WILL STAY AFTER CLASS WITH YOU TO HELP YOU EVEN MORE. DO ALL THE HOMEWORK, FROM PERSONAL EXPERIANCE DO ALL THE PROBLEMS, I KNOW IT SEEMS LIKE ALOT BUT IT'S VERY WELL WORTH IT. TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT A FUN AND HELPFULL TEACHER
Mr Hirsh, you're a really funny teacher! I can tell that you know a lot about math, and your tie stories are really interesting to listen to!
This is a very helpful course for me and I learned a lot from it. I am glad I took it, and your tie stories are very cool.
A very experienced teacher. I enjoyed learning algebra 2a from him. Plenty of interesting stories.
Mr. Hirsch is a good-hearted man and is always there 2 help if u need it. He always tells tie stories..they r not all good but he keeps the class interesting. The class itself isnt easy but raise ur hand and answer ?s 4 extra credit points..
Really good hearted human being. Nice guy, ok taecher. The pace he was going was a little too fast for most, but if you work you butt off really hard you can achieve hopefully an A or B. Never miss class, he covers a lot, try not to be late, and raise your hand and earn extra credit points they help in the end.
He's a good, forgiving teacher but don't talk too much in his class. He has a lot of jokes and stories. Go to his comedy show!
This teacher spends too much time talking about his ties and stories, and when it comes to teaching, he will only do what the examples do, you will have to learn alot on your own. You will have a hard time doing the homework since he is always following the examples. He will stuff all the chapters in for the final and have no time for studying it.
He just wants people to take his class... and when in class... he tells people to go to his comedy shows for extra credit but at the mean time he is making extra money off you. This teacher is all about his jokes and stories, he will just show you how to do the examples while in class.
Mr Hirsh is a good teacher...he likes to tell jokes/stories about his ties. try not to miss a day, since he is a fast paced teacher. a good thing is that he doesn't give any quizzes and teaches straight from the book.
nice teacher
he's a good teacher and i learned a lot. the tie stories are amusing and are good to loosen up a bit in class.
Tie-guy is a very cool teacher..
cool teacher, but too many tie stories and too less explaining of problems
he is a very nice teacher, but his tests are not that easy. we had quiz every week, and four test the whole semester. to do well in this class, you'd better do all the things he ask, such as in-class activity, homework, and even extra credit.
The concepts involved in the course are not very easy. Mr. Hirsch does a great job at explaining things the right way. He works hard to make you learn things. A strong base in Statistics is a requirement for many courses. You will not forget anything that Mr. Hirsch teaches. He's fun.

This guy can teach
i loved this class. i suck at math and i got an A in the class. he's funny and has a great personality. i dunno why he got such bad reviews..he's my fav math teacher.
Oy this guy hurt soooo much He pretty much encouraged my skipping class with his annoying shenanigans and horrid lectures. If I hear another story about a tie I swear I'm gonna go mad. The class was easy but he was a loser.
He's funny in a stupid funny and nice. He's got a good personality but doesn't explain math very well.
Don't take his class.. To quote someone else: Oy this guy hurt soooo much He pretty much encouraged my skipping class with his annoying shenanigans and horrid lectures. If I hear another story about a tie I swear I'm gonna go mad. The class is easy but he was boring. He isn't clear and he doesn't have the appropriate tools. I think he's OCD also. Really, i'd try for another teacher anyday.
He doesn't explain things well AT ALL. It's easier to go into class and only do your own work.

not all about math
I've NEVER had a teacher so horrible. He doesn't know the material at all.I've taken precalculus already so I'm passing but he doesn't know how to teach! He often pauses to think about the examples and how to do it, and one time a STUDENT explained it to him. He wastes a lot of time on personal stories about ties, and always lets us out late.
He's a good guy and pretty funny. At first he didn't to know how to explain things very well, but he seems to have improved. He keeps class fun.
I'm a math major and had to drop just cuz I was going to die of boredome. Instead of giving us examples from the homework, he would go over the examples already given in the book. Thanks. Class was 2 and a half hours and he would always try to keep us longer. Get to the point. I thought one of the students in class would have been a better teacher.
I took many math classes (some advanced) before, but I think it was the first and the last math class I studied the hardest but learned the most, with fun. I like his sense of humor. Students must have self discipline to succeed in this class. He explains questions well with details. Students have opportunity making up any bad quiz or test.

(more comments) He is a very dedicated professor: he never missed his class; spending lots time, helped students in/outside the class. Knowing contents very well, he still did the homework assignments himself. His ties stories really helped me to relax, specially right before the quiz. I like the format of class since I learn and remember more.
might have made it to every class, but he was more often late, and kept us late to make up. does not know how to teach. botched my understanding of subjects i had covered and understood before, even had to be corrected by students during lectures. spent more time trying to make his students like him than on helping students learn material.
Yuck. all he did was talk about Ties. I don't care about ties. Frankly, i don't think he knew how to teach the subject well. He may have known it, but he couldn't teach it. He's a nice guy. But i was sick of him not making any sense.
He's a nice guy.
Eh, I'm impartial to this guy... Sometimes he gets off topics on the hard stuff, but he can also be pretty decent with helping you. But I mean, do we REALLY need to know about his ties all the time? You'd think with so many, he could at least keep his stories fresh... Yeash. But did he HAVE to incule a chapter in the book that's not even IN it?
Mr. Hirsch is a funny teacher. However, he spends too much time on tie stories and other non-math topics. Also, the tests are too hard (He chooses the hardest problems ever). But it is nice how he lets you improve your grade in many ways
He does get off topic a lot, but he is always willing to help. i dont any other math teachers who give you partial credit on problems, or that give you second chances to make up your tests and improve your grade. Also, he was willing to help students in the math center to better understand the subjects. so overall, i would say that he was good.
Statistics is not an easy class and I feel as though this course does not make it any easier. It's not because of the teacher but rather the text he used. The text seemed to be made for self paced classes, so barely any lecturing ever went on, besides weird tie stories. It also didn't help to be overloaded with homework and it just seemed like ther
Extremely unorganized. Rarely prepared for class. Tests are often a mess and confusing. Sometimes the questions on exams aren't clear and points were taken off if you didn't answer it exactly how he wanted it. I feel his grading on tests was often unfair. He took off points for spelling mistakes and grammar. I am getting a good grade though.
This was a really tough class. He makes up his own tests and they are usually very unclear, and very difficult. The HW load is huge!I would not take this class unless you have at least 2 hrs EACH day to commit to it. 99% of the class was usually lost, and he would move on to the next chapter. Longest 5 mo. of my life! Tie stories are great though!
Hard class,hard tests.
very unique teaching style, a little different at first but very enjoyable by the end of the semester. very knowledgable on subject.
overall a great teacher
He's a nice guy, very easy to approach, grades fairly and doesn't require a lot of hw. Overall a good teacher.

This teacher is amazing, he knows how to talk jokes and make people dun feel bored in his class. He always give people chances to improve and he's willing to help everyone. Btw, as a rice fob, i enjoy learning his white comedies seriously
nice teacher, but too hard
helpful teacher and very easy going. he always want us to get the accurate datas, so willing to help us on that by going back and forth to print out datas. jokes are funny!
great teacher ......very helpful...willing to time to make sure u undertand...nice guy enjoyed taking classes with him
mr. hirsh rocks my socks...keeps the ties rolling in...
I had Mr. Hirsch for 151a and for 151b.. he's a good teacher who makes learning fun. Overall, his class is very easy, he gives you a lot of extra points for extra h.w you do or ever if you correct him or make a certain comment. I would recommend this teacher!
He was a very helpful teacher and understanding. If you fail the chapter test you can take retake for a better grade. When he lectures if you do not understand you raise your hand and he will relecture till you understand. HE Makes learning fun and he even gives up his time for you to retake a test. No other math teacher I had before lets you retak
He is a very dedicated professor who takes the time to explain hard math problems. He gives us a second chance if we do badly by letting us take make up tests.
Excellent instructor! Take his class and he will find the mathematician in you! Seriously, he can make anyone enjoy math!
great teacher. keeps you interested
he's a pretty easy teacher. i enjoy listening to his tie stories and other stuff that can make the class laugh. it may be boring at times while he's teaching, but he's excellent at explaining the math material. it seems like his tests are a lot easier than the homework. get him as a teacher. you won't regret it =]
Mr. Hirsch is an ok insructor but I would have liked more focus on the course from him.
He clarifies everything if you do not understand, but goes very quickly in his lessons. Fun tie stories.
he's ok but he tends to get off topic a lot and then tries to rush the lessons at the end. sometimes i don't get him cuz he'll hella b doin a prob. and ur just like what the hell is goin on.he'll pop up wit a story about somethin that has nothin to do wit itnethin, but mostly it's ok in his class the tests rn't that bad and they're hella short too.
teachers has hella ties, so thas wut kept me awake. i think i have a sleepin disorder. i slept for 3 weeks straight for an hour each day. but the teacher does a great job teaching. even though i slept i asked him at the end of class and he didnt get mad about me sleeping. so this teacher koo
Professor Hirsch is a good teacher. He makes math interesting but at times can teach a little fast. But none the less he is always willing to answer question . Overall he is a good math teacher, his test are fairly easy and his makeup test policy is really good and he is pretty flexible on makeup test.
Prof. Hirsch makes math fun. He talks about his tie collection, which is pretty interesting. It also eases some of the math stress. I have to say he is one of the best professor's I've met in Ohlone.
His class is fun.. but you have to really spend alot of time on the homework and be in class.
he is a cool teacher and 151a is easy
Mr. Hirsch is a great teacher! He is great at getting everyone involved. He is a great communicator, so it was very easy to understand the material. He always tried to make sure we all understood what was going on. There was never a boring moment in that class...thanks to this teacher's great stories and amazing teaching skills.Hooray for Hirsch!

Hes a funny teacher. He starts the day with jokes or a new tie to show off, then an hour and a half or so into explaining the material from the exercizes at the beg of the chptrs, we'll take a break, then get at it again. If you understand math really well, take him but be prepared to handle his "humor". He will also explain to death till u get it
Mr. Hirsh is a great teacher. If you come into his class with a frown, you'll leave with a smile. He's a funny teacher. He always is telling joke to keep everyone interested in his class. I once got x-credit for laughing at him.
hirsch is a cool teacher his lectures can at times get boring but the jokes help and hes not above getting off topic for half an hour. his tests are rather on the hard side, but as long as you turn in all the homework and pass the final you can easily get a C or better!
he is a very bad teacher
Very thorough. He will always answer questions to the furthest extent. An easy class to pass if you just show up listen, and do your work. He's also pretty entertaining at times.
i took hirsch for math 151 and math 153. the 151 was cool. i was in there with 5 people i went to high school with, so we had fun. i realize after taking 153, that the only reason it was fun was because i had friends in there to talk to and i met a guy.. in both classes i zoned out and doodled all class n did o.k. but its boring if u take 2 times
Perfect ! I love his way !
This is a very easy class to pass. He gives you SO many ways to raise your grade! He sometimes has a hard time explaining things in a way that everyone can understand though. He tells tie stories, but generally he stays on track. I'd be okay if I had to take him again, but I'd like to see what other math teachers are at Ohlone.
Mr. Hirsch is a fun-loving down to earth man. He knows how to get his students involved. If you go to his class and just listen to his lectures, it will be simple
hirsch was an okay teacher... but he talked soo much about his ties that we would have to cramm entire chapters in one day and be ready for the test... in my experience ... he did it twice...just a suggestion... the book helps you exactly the same way he does.... i dont highly recommend him. good luck on your choice
He does spend time on his ties he does spend time making jokes but the class is great and he is a good guy. I would say that he is among the best Math teachers I have had. Math teachers always seem to be a bit off anyway so the fact he is eccentric isn't bad, at least he isn't egocentric.

I really didnt like Mr. Hirsh at first. He is slow and pretty dorky and i almost dropped his class because I was sure that I wouldnt learn anything, but now I love him especially his quirkiness. Statistics is so easy. this fathom program that we use pretty much does the work for you. If you come to class everyday u wont need to do any homework.
I can't stand him. Comes late, talks about his ties for 10mins. When doing example problems, does the exact same ones in the book. His jokes aren't funny. Only nerds like him. He picks crazy problems for the tests. I have never had problems with math untill dealing with him. Torture!!
hmm. first comment will be good for him.take his calss if u are really good in math already.dun expect u can learn many stuff from him. all his stuff is EXCTACLy the same in the text book. But test n home work,do his "magic number" revise. I GURUANTEE Usame question appear in test for sure. in class,TALK cold joke n show off tie.dile lecture(sleep!
Horrible, the worst teacher I have ever had!!
This guy is a cook. WORDS OF ADVICE- if youre taking his trig class, get a TI-89 calculator. this will convert deg to rad for you.. and save you a lot of time. youll be graded on 3 test and your hw. the last test will also be a test for the last 3 chapters. about 70% of your final will be based on the last 3 chapters, so dont sweat the other stuff.
He's a good person, just can't teach well. He gets off topic about SOME specific things and doesn't seem to care if you understand it or not.
He means well, but he's really not a good teacher... He tells a lot of jokes, most of which are lame, which is ironic because he's a stand up comedian on the side. He also talks about his ties a lot... I didn't pass because I couldn't understand his teaching method, you might, but I doubt it. Bottom line look for a different teacher.
His grading is ridiculous and pretty confusing at first. Actually, HE'S pretty confusing at first. I really struggled to just get a C in his class. However, if math is an easy subject for you- go ahead and take him. (as long as you don't mind his not so great sense of humor)
I'm writing this in class because I'm bored. This stats class wasn't all that hard until now. His lectures make no sense. He relies on the book too much. He is one of the worst teachers I've ever had. He tries hard to teach, but just can't explain things. A nice guy, but wouldn't recommend it.
Mr. Hirsch is by far one of the worst "teachers" I have ever had. He shows up late every single day, wastes class time talking about his neck tie collection, terrible jokes, and tries to make money by plugging his comedy shows. He doesn't follow the book, his lectures don't make sense, and he is very unorganized. He even lost one of our tests.
This man is in love with his tie collection and spent half of the time talking about his tie collection. I heard his class was easy and I got sick, had doctors notes and always did double the homework for extra credit. He's boring and just confuses the students more. Hard to stick to the lectures too
Hands down the worst teacher. SPends a majority of the class period talking about his ties. Not very helpful. Doesn't help study for tests. Very Unorganized. Can't count test scores correctly. Writes out his own tests. Just a horrible teacher.
Stats itself is a boring subject. However, he taught it well. Plenty of examples and lectures actually go along with the textbook which is helpful. If you follow the textbook and ask him for clarification on things you don't understand, you will get an A. His stories are nice breaks from stats. Helps keep you from burning out. Funny Guy.
Terrible teacher. Take anyone but him! Holmes, Bitzer, ANYONE! He answers questions with another question, he doesn't understand the technology he requires for his class, is obsessed about his ties, thinks he is funny but in reality isn't, handwrites his exams in terrible penmanship and is an overall bad teacher!
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER KNOWN! He teaches math but goes on about random tie stories. Everyone ended up dropping the class or failing it. Waste of time and he doesn't seem to care if you're failing. Horrible...
WARNING: Do not take this teacher for statistics, even if your life depends on it. First of all, his teaching style if very confusing. In other words, you'll learn more out of the book than from him. He also handwrites his tests. Overall, you are setting yourself up for failure if you take him. Good luck.
He's an easy A if you do turn in your hw,and he allows late work.He loves to talk about his entire tie collection and you may feel his lecture a little boring.
DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!!HORRIBLE...I felt as if i was the only one that participated in this class and i still got a D...tests only had 4 questions on it so if you miss 1 theres a C...took over a month to grade 1 test...final had 10 ?s ...most test were hand written...what ever you do dont take this professor!!!!!
this teacher is a waste of time all he does is talk about his stupid ties...hes a horrible teacher that is unprofessional takes forever to return tests...im retakin this class with MR. Singh and hes a 1,000,000Xs better...dont take MR. Hirsch...if you take his class your only goin to waste your time and life away!!!
This professor is a waste of time becuz all he ever talks about is his dumb tie collection. He is not clear about how he grades. He also gives unrealistic amounts of homework too. Basically the computer and the text are the ones that teach you everything. He's useless. The whole class is failing becuz he sucks at teaching. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
He would be far more useful if he were to assign specific homework problems for study. Instead, he requires that you do every other odd problem in the sections covered without stating which parts to focus on. He also does not review what will be on tests, making it difficult to know what you should be studying in particular. A terrible teacher.
Mr. Hirsch is an easy grader. If you at least put something down he'll give you partial points and a 65 is still a C in this class. Pretty easy if you go to the math lab and do all the homework on time.
Terrible terrible teacher...2nd worst instructor I have EVER taken in my entire life
He is very funny, a great guy! love his ties! has hundreds of them, he loves complements. He is very smart but a bit hard to understand.
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS. Mr. Hirsch is a nice guy and all, but he is not fit to be a teacher. He wastes class time telling stories about his ties. He is NOT helpful at all and often talks himself in circles when trying to explain a problem then gets himself confused. You have to read the textbook and teach yourself everything in order to pass.
Nice man. Head of the Math department, I believe. But, DON'T take him! He is not a good instructor, uses lecture time to talk about his ties and at the end of the course he wants to teach everything in one day!! He eats his lunch in front of students and during our lecture time! You have to learn on your own, or you will fail! Stay away!
I loved how he did his grading curriculum. He even replaces two lowest test scores to the final exam percentage if you do good. He's very nice and funny. He's like one of the best teachers compared to my high school teacher who taught the same subject as this one, called Algebra 2. Rock on, Mr. Hirsch! My name is Ali Ahmed.
This instructor is very odd in his method of grading. During my semester he was late to almost every class session by at least 5 - 10 mins. My class only lasted 1 hr. and him being late wasted so much class time. His method of teaching is reading the examples in the book and putting them on the board. The mathlab helped me more than he ever did.
Mr. Hirsch seems like he could be a nice guy but he's a terrible teacher!I'm not sure why we need him if all he uses is the book! If you can learn math on your own I would suggest taking the self-paced section so you can avoid him and not have to listen to stories about ties. He wastes too much time and then crams at the very end. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
This instructor is one of the worst I've had. Although I acquired an A in the class, I worked tirelessly in the mathlab for assistance. He doesn't seem to understand the spectrum of how a student learns. All he does is read directly from the book. This instructor is not very good at explaining things either. You're better off taking self-paced.
ummmmm....Good Luck :D hahahah
ummmmm....Good Luck :D hahahah!
ummmmm....Good Luck!
All I can say about Hirsch is make sure you are prepared to stay every minute of class lectures and to be totally confused by his syllabus and homework grading policy. Bless his heart even he doesn't quite get it either :/
This is a lousy professor. I changed sections because I couldn't stand the fact that he uses class time to talk about ties instead of teaching. If you want to learn do not take this class with this so call professor. He really doesn't care about teaching. If you don't do things HIS way he will mark you wrong on test. His class is a waste of time.
He is an awful teacher. If I did not know any algebra beforehand, I would have failed the class. He copies everything directly from the text book and doesn't teach anything himself. He spends about 30 minutes talking about ties also. If you can, avoid taking his class.
By far the worse instructor Ive ever had. He's not clear with his instruction and he's not willing to clarify after class. Instead of teaching each section in-depth, he waste time talking about his tie collection. He has no manners when it comes to talking to his students for he often puts them on the spot, or puts them down.
Not a very good teacher. Very bad clarity. We used mylab and that's the only way I learned anything. If you take quizzes multiple times and look at examples you will do well. Mini tests kill though because it's based off his teaching. I don't recommend him.
Pointless. Classes consisted of doing the hw, hw-quiz and test-quiz, which you could do at home. To me, this was a self-teaching class. I had an A for the first half of the semester and ended up with a B b/c it just took up too much time :[ I hated his lectures b/c they would start near the end of class and past the time class ended. Really?
Not a good teacher, at ALL. I more or less taught myself from the textbook. If that's the kind of class you're looking for then take it with Hirsch, but otherwise don't even.
This professor will not teach you. He expects you to know everything. I took him for Math 159 and he relies on MyMathLab to do his job for him. There were tests every Wednesday. Oh and you can't take the test without completing the prerequisites. :( The tests are combined, so if you study for Ch. 5 make sure you know everything from Ch.1-4.
Absolutely terrible. He doesn't teach anything and he doesn't plan his lectures. His lectures consist of doing 3 practice problems, which take him the entire period. He uses mymathlab for everything. However, he is the nicest guy I've ever met. He really does mean well, and he can be hilarious.
what's with the low ratings? This guy is awesome! Extremely helpful
Really great guy but he's a god awful instructor. He doesn't teach a thing, and so it's pretty much a self-taught class. This model worked for me for Alg 2 but not for stats. His lectures are so unorganized and confusing, and he spends so much time rattling on about the glaringly obvious that it is hard to pay attention to him. He's real
The class lectures and math are nothing like the test....nice guy horrible professor!!!!!
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE! Do not take him as a teacher. He is a kind man, however, in terms of school. He is probably one of the WORST math teachers I've ever had! He does not help nor does he explain, not does he care. If you are trying to get a reasonable grade, do not take him. He is completely disorganized.
Mr. Hirsch is honestly a great teacher. His teaching methods may take a while to get used to and may even seem high,y difficult. But honestly, you just need to put in time and some common sense. A lot of people were whining and complaining about how hard his class and how useless he is.. but honestly maybe you're just not ready for stats.
Really nice guy, will explain anything you don't get.You have to understand everything before you move on because all the test are cumulative. As long as you do the work on time and do the practice test until you get a good grade.
Horrible teacher. He believes that students should execute math problems his way, or it is wrong. He's a typical middle school-type teacher who encourages students to approach math in a linear, monkey-see-monkey-do type fashion, disregarding conceptual, critical thinking-unless it involves his ties.
He is an old Prof which makes his lecture doesn't sound interesting. However, his class is mainly base on computer, all the tests, quizzes, and homework are done on computer, not written test. Be smart and follow the curriculum. You should receive a B or higher.
Follow and be smart. You should get a B or higher.
Explains concepts thoroughly. Thanks to firm foundation laid by Prof. Hirsch, I'm able to keep pace w/ a b-school level stats course at a top grad program. Advice: attend class, keep up with hw/quiz problems, ask questions in class. Prof. Hirsch does great job of leading students through difficult concepts step-by-step. Don't take for granted.
Horrible teacher. He seriously spends half of class talking about his ties where they came from, what is on it, who gave it to him, etc. He is a nice guy, but he's no help. I seriously sat in his class, 2 days a week for an 1 1/2hr & had no clue what he was talking about. When you look around, everyone is on their phones. Don't take this class.
Strays from all topics on tangents that causes most students to stray in thought and forgets to go over material that is later tested on
Professor Hirsch is a very good math professor. As long as you pay attention, do the HW and stay on top of the lecture notes you will be fine! Math is difficult in general so you obviously need to put extra time into studying so you actually understand the material. Remember- your grade reflects your hard work in the class! =)
Took Hirsh and he seemed ok in the beginning. Then everything changed. Homework rules are confusing, tests are hard and you take two separate tests at the same time. He is helpful in class and math lab but the workload for the class is intense. I failed the class and re took it with another professor and I passed with an A. Nice guy though.
Bad teacher. Difficult tests. But he's a nice guy. Would definitely NOT recommend though.
Mr. Hirsh is a very clear teacher, he takes his time to explain in class BUT his class is very dull, super boring, and it makes you want to ditch class everyday. His homework is easy, his tests on the other hand are pretty hard and some of the questions we've never went through in class. Don't take his class if you're already unmotivated in math.
Hirsch is a very nice person; however, his lectures are incredibly long and boring. He lectures STRAIGHT out of the book. No point in attending class unless you have questions. He will mark you down points if you have a different approach to a problem. Expect assignments out of the textbook everyday.
He honestly didn't help me at all. I passed this class more from reading the book than listening to his lectures. Take advantage of the extra credit. He doesn't post the grades on any website, so I was clueless the whole semester. Overall, he's a nice and funny guy, but try and find a professor who actually teaches.
a very nice person, but his lectures make no sense, and his tests are literally the most confusing questions over the most obscure & random concepts. I would avoid at all costs. The only reason why Im not furious is because the class doesnt transfer so it doesnt affect my UC gpa. but seriously - avoid him. Take at a different school if you have to.
Honestly he is a little more unorthodox than most teachers but he is genuine. He does take his time but goes through everything you need to know to pass the class. If you honestly just pay attention and do the homework than you should pass easily. And all his test are based on his practice test. So just do the practice test and you should be fine.
Prof. Hirsch is a very tough grader. Lectures are frequent and very long and un interesting, often not very clear. Breezes by topics and tests on them in following weeks. Test are very tough, and it makes it harder that he grades very hard. Would not take this professor again and would definitely not recommend to anyone else.
He is a very unique and kind person and general. The way he teaches is boring but you will learn. If you want the class to move faster, when he asks a question, ANSWER IT! The class was fairly easy but I did have a background in algebra. He gave practice tests which helped a lot. Home work due day of test, just do the work, you'll be fine
I have not taken a c lass with him, but he works in the Math Learning Center at the Newark Campus and he's not really helpful at all. He kind of just walks around and doesn't really ask if anyone needs help or anything. He's not that good of a professor, nor much helpful.
Mr. Hirsch is old school in his teachings, he tries his best to explain things as simple as he can. Many people do not like him because of his old school teaching style, but you can do fine if you put the time and effort into the course. Go to the Math Learning Center and get the help you need, if you are struggling, and get help. He's a cool guy.
Mr. Hirsch is a cool guy, more of a slow relaxed teacher, that doesn't go above and beyond like other teachers. He has a soft voice and his lectures aren't always the best or clear, but if you see him in the Math Learning Center, he can clear it up. He is an okay professor, really old though. You have to study hard to do really well in his class.
Mr. Hirsch is a nice guy, but his lectures can be confusing at times. Sometimes it's hard to understand what he is teaching, his teaching style is rather old, and not modern. He just stands up there on the whiteboard and teaches, but it's hard to understand what he is doing. He isn't the best choice for this class. Going to the Math Lab will help.
Professor Hirsch is a nice guy. Don't get me wrong but, I honestly just did not click with him his teaching style is not the best. He goes over a couple of examples in class then stops. He also does not go over the full practice test in class and he only goes over specific questions which is not helpful.
He is a tough professor, he expects a lot and his teaching styles are not the best. He teaches on the white board, and is very soft spoken. His tests are tough and he isn't always clear on the material when he lectures. He knows the material but just isn't that good of explaining it. If you see him in the Math Learning Center, he is more helpful.
He is a pretty tough professor, his lectures are not clear from the beginning which makes the class even harder. I don't necessarily recommend him as s professor, he is a nice guy, but I'd pick someone else if I had the chance. He is more old fashion rather than in the new. He is also very old and I feel as if he's overworked. Would not take again.
He is not a good lecturer, which then makes his class tough. He knows the material, but it is just that he doesn't know how to correctly convey the material across. He is a very nice guy though, I just cannot recommend him as a professor. He is always available for help in the Math Lab though, which is great and a bit better. His tests are tough.
Great teacher who is willing to help you if you don't understand something. He will also tell anecdotes or jokes every now and then. Explains content thoroughly but expect to put effort into the course (homework, studying, etc).
Good Teacher, I also took his calculus class as well- Real Deal and funny!
He's a great professor with a great tie collection. Would reccomend.
Don't get me wrong, he's a very nice guy, but his teaching methods are just not all there. He does his best to convey the material, but he isn't the best for the class. He is always available to help you outside of class, as he is always in the Math Learning Center. The class is kinda difficult if you struggle in math get help as soon as possible.
He is better one on one, so if you have questions, seek his help in the Math Learning Center. He is always there ready to help students, do there best. His lectures may not be as clear as other professors, but he offers a ton of help outside of class that really helps. He is a very nice guy as well, very personable and talkative. Try his class out.
Hirsch has a dynamic although quirky personality and his style of teaching features odd little mnemonics here and there that make it a little easier to remember. I really enjoyed having him and more often then not he can be found in the math lab willing to help. He is also missing a toe, you can ask if you want.
One of the most well known and reputed math instructors at this college. He truly cares about his students. Do the work, study, and you will be fine. He gives good answers to all sorts of questions, and makes the material easy to understand.
Great teacher, every now and then he struggles to explain things thoroughly but overall does ok. Funny and approachable. Class is easy if you show up and participate. Did well on all tests but bombed one, so homework and extra credit goes a long way.
Mr Hirsch is a nice guy, not professor. He's disorganized and expects you to complete too much homework than is reasonable. He expects it in a certain format (to prevent cheating.) He won't let you take the tests unless you do the homework. I understood the material perfectly, but had a D-. I had no other option than to drop his class midway.
Very good professors compared to others.
He is such a nice and caring professor and he tries his best to help all his students. The tests are easy and the study guide helps a lot.
He is a very nice guy, although, he is better more so one on one learning. If you ask him for help outside of class, he explains it better rather than a classroom setting. He is not necessarily the best lecturer, but if you study and receive help when needed, you will be good to go. It's not an easy class being Algebra 2, so you need to study.
He makes a lot of math jokes and has a huge tie collection. He always does his lectures from the book's examples and gives homework for every single section he teaches on. He does grade on attendance so show up every day. Sometimes his lectures can be a bit confusing, but he is very good at explaining outside of class in a one-on-one setting.
Definitely had to put the groundwork in for this course. Professor Hirsch is sweet and wears a new tie everyday. I enjoyed going to his class. If you want an A in this course, be prepared to KEEP UP WITH THE HOMEWORK. All his tests are based on the homework. If you can do the review, you'll ace the test. Manage your time well and you'll get an A.
Loved Mr. Hirsch!!! He has a huge tie collection, which is always a nice gift (if you want to give him anything.) Super chill, makes class go by fast with his witty jokes. Answers any questions you may have. Online coursework as well as some quizzes. A overall A+ choice! Would definitely reccomend taking his class!!
Ended up having him for Pre-Algebra as it was the only section available. Hes not the best professor, but you can tell he cares about his students. He always makes time for his students in the math lab and is really helpful one on one. Hes a very nice guy as well. The class wasnt too hard, put the effort and work into the class and get help.
I took Math 151. As long as you do all the homework and review the problems on my math lab you should be able to pass the class. The test are based off of the homework.
