Very interesting professor. Kind of a frankenstein nerd which is awesome.
Very interesting professor. Kind of a frankenstein nerd which is awesome. I definitely enjoy his class
In a department with professors like Goldman and Streiter that are too strict, it is nice to get a guy like Minter. A nice guy. I can't picture him ever losing his temper. He's into a lot of sci-fi stuff, he makes our Frankenstein class very interesting.
hes a good proffesor, he seems to be one of the best in the english department. very nice guy!
Excellent teacher, available to students, highly approachable.
Dr. Mr Frankenstein, A long awaited and still overdue subjective resume may herein be developed further. Allow 4 a purity in ours minds eyes to assume m' consume us..Free Will and Empowerment!
He is a great professor. Sometimes he seems like one of the students because he always jokes around. He is always available and often helps students out. I needed 8 sources for a paper I was writing and he went and emailed 4 of them to me, so basicly, half my research project was done.
I don't know how anyone can say he's a good prof. I agree, he's a nice person, but a bad prof. He's smart, knows the material, but does not teach it. All I learned in his class was from my own research. Some students talk in the class more than the prof; the discussions are not organized, and there'
Very nice professor...class very engaging... alot of reading though and writing... lets you hand-in a draft for corrections and lets you correct guarenteeing u basically an A on each paper... paper topics not very hard just long readings
best english course i've taken
He is the Best! He cares about his students doing well and he goes out of his way to help us excel. He's working on organizing the class discussions. There use to be 1 or 2 students who monopolized the class discussions, but now Minter is conscious of seeing that everyone has a turn. He's the best
a geniunely nice guy. appears a little tough and assignments seem hard and you might not know what the hell you're doing, but when you get it back you'll probably get an A. readings are a bit boring though.
Awesome guy. Awesome class. A few paper assignments not to difficult, hes a very fair grader. Most of class time is group discussions and in class writing assignments. Definitely would recommend him for english 2.
Class wasn't as interesting as I'd hope for but Professor Minter is a great guy and very willing to help. There is a lot of work but he's a very generous grader and lets you choose your own topics. I would take him again if I could.
He expects a lot of papers from you, but it is not a high stress class. He likes a lot of class discussion and it is not about him droning on his opinion about the work. He gets the students involved.
He's a great teacher. At first you might be a little lost but he's really helpful. If you're not an "A" student, you can take this anyone of his courses.Becaause if you do all of the work you could get an easy "A".
He's a great teacher! I loved his class and out of all of the Profs. in the english department his is one of the best if not only.
Although he is somewhat anal, he is a pretty good guy. Tries his hardest to keep class interesting, and there really isn't that much work in comparison to other courses in the Eng. department. Easy A.
This Film and Lit class is really interesting. Prof. Minter is a good professor with rather odd choices for the reading material. The movies were pretty good however. Tests and final are okay. The best thing about the class--no 10lb textbook!
Extremely helpful and easy professor.
Prof. Minter is very friendy and easily accessible outside of class for help. He likes good discussion during class and he also likes to talk A LOT. The assignments are long and complicated, but he is an easy grader. Just come to class, talk, do your work, and you'll get an easy A.
Minter is one of the nicest and most considerate instructors in the department. He's laid back, funny, and pretty easy. He's a little disorganized at times.
Nice guy. Something of a modern, progressive type. His politics were a little too clear for an English class. If you would like an English class in keeping with progressive academic trends, he would be good for you. If you just want to learn the literature the way it is traditionally taught, this is not the place to go.
very interesting but a LOT of work, especially compared to the other macaulay seminar's teacher... if ur looking for an easy ride and not so much work, DO NOT take minter. hes obsessed with podcasts and gives a lot of assignments that are very time-consuming. but on the other hand, if u participate and he knows u try, hell prob give u a good grade
Very kind, intentional prof. I learned a lot and got an A (which is surprising since i HATE english). He's open to opinions and gives everyone a chance to speak and LISTens to student. Enjoyed the course a lot.
This guy is incredibly easy. If you want to succeed in his class, read a LITTLE of the readings he assigns and talk about it in class. If you want to do the least possible, but still get an A, bring up some contentious issue that you observed and he will go onnnn and onnnnnn. You can hand in stuff late and be on your computers in class :)
It requires a lot of work, but he is willing to help you out and extend deadlines when he realizes he put too much on you. The class requires a lot of outings. He's aware of kids doing funky business on laptops so look out.
I took him for english1012. Not really what I expected. He gives a lot of work and the research paper was mostly his choice. Although he does help along the way, his assignments and books are super boring. Never really disliked English into now.
This is the second time I took Prof Minter, and I LOVE him. He gives a lot of reading, but I used to skim and pulled off an A in his class twice. I used to also fall asleep all the time. As long as you know enough to write good papers and contribue once in awhile in class, it's an easy A. He's also extremely nice and helpful as well.
One of my favorite teachers ever! Took him twice in undergrad, and taking my first grad school course with him now. Incredibly helpful and passionate about what he does. I only read portions of the readings and got A's both times I took him. Lets you choose your own research paper topic and helps you as you need it along the way. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE. I took his eng 2 class he is insane with the amount of work he gives.I am not a lazy student either I have a 3.8 gpa so you can get an idea... There's like five assignments just for one paper. Very unorganized and all over the place. Basically when I think of him and his method the word "unnecessary" comes to mind. AVOID!
Minter is a nice guy. Books are boring and assigns a lot of confusing reading, but you don't have to worry about that. He talks a lot. Participate, you'll be okay. However, he gives confusing assignments and loads up on events and projects near the end of the semester. Gives much more work than the other professors, but not too horrible
Gives far too many writing assignments for the reading to be meaningful, even though the texts themselves are actually quite enjoyable. Generally responds to emails quickly but is not at all helpful during office hours. Takes forever to grade/give feedback on your work. Avoid him; his class isn't worth the trouble.
Went into this class with incredibly high expectations, which were all subsequently shattered. His expectations of his students are high and incredibly confusing. The syllabus is simultaneously unclear and unduly strict. Don't take this class if you have an appreciation for literature.
DO NOT take this guy for a Core class, he is an English professor for people who want their work chewed up, spit out, who want to work endlessly on perfecting their writing. These are not bad qualities in a teacher, but if you are not an English major, if you have a life, if you have other priorities, find another prof for core Eng. For your sanity
Im taking English 2 with him now. Way too much work. Like an insane amount. 15 page essay and just so many assignments. Don't do it.
Way too much work & too many little assignments. Take someone else.
Minter treats the class as though it's the only class his students are taking. He assigns an insane amount of work and it just isn't realistic for students who are taking 3-4 other classes as well as working and taking care of other priorities. He's very nice and helpful, but it felt too much like a history course to me. I didn't enjoy it at.
The assignments are very bland and he goes over the top to explain is point but never exactly explains his point. Lectures are solely just him talking then he allows some students to speak, it's not that bad but it's monotonous and not for the people who require enthusiasm to work. He gives a lot of reading and 8 times out of 10 it's boring
SO SO SO SO SO MUCH WORK. omfggggg. This guy loves to give a lot of work. The reason I failed a major class is because I spent so much time trying to write novels for this class. But he's amazing if you want to perfect your writing.
He gave so much work.
Don't take!! This class is a nightmare. This is the most work I've ever done for a class in my life. He assigns so many assignments for class and expects his students to do an unreasonable amount of reading. He treats it as if it's the only class his students were taking. Worst professor I've ever had. Again, DO NOT TAKE
DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED by him or his six page syllabus. There is a method to his madness. He gives constructive feedback, and the assignments are applicable to writing the final. Everything is done in drafts so it's over before you know it. And if you didn't get a good grade on any formal assignment, YOU GET TO REVISE IT and get a better grade.
I remember when me and my friends took this class together, many of them thought they would fail based on the grade he returned for our essays. But this professor is well beyond clever enough to not grade solely on numbers. He truly accounts for you strength and improvement as a writer, and as a person. Great class, won't regret it
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!! BEWARE OF THIS MAN HE IS READY TO DESTROY YOUR LIFE. He will have you rethinking your whole life he gives way to much work, an intangible amount, impossible amount of work to complete. DO NOT DO IT TO YOUR SELF STAY AWAY FROM HIM!!!!
Prof. Minter isn't bad. He is very knowledgable, also if you need help you may visit him during off. hrs or via email. HOWEVER the amount of reading issued is asinine especially if you are taking other courses and have an occupation. If you're taking 1 course & enjoy reading go for it but if you're a full time student and full time employee AVOID
He assigns a crazy amount of complicated work. It not too bad if you sit for hours and really think! In his class I live in fear that I will be forced to speak. Although I am not enjoying having to carry a 1400 page novel around with me daily so that I can achieve his requirement of 150-250 pages per week, he is actually a very organized and clear.
I believe he is a good professor, but doesn't think of the fact that this class is a core class, and goes overboard with the assigned readings, and the requirements for the papers. He forgets the fact that some people are taking 4 or 5 other classes in addition to his. Needs to be more reasonable when it comes to his assigned readings! and papers!
what a horrible experience! this professor is so BORING! he talks forever and his voice is so droll plus he is a tough grader and i have no idea what he is talking about do not take!
Great professor. A lot of reading, but classes are enjoyable especially if you contribute. Very fair grader and as long as you hand everything in you should do well. Also, he is very open minded and truly listens to and considers what students have to say about the reading.
All the reviews about how much reading and written work he assigns is absolutely correct. I do not believe he takes into account that people are taking other classes besides his and that there is only 24 hours in a day. Luckily hes a genuinely caring person, he gives good feedback and will let you redo assignments and even turn them in late.
As a doctorate scholar, I guess he likes to assume the rest of us are as well. Too much reading if you're a full time student AND working. Definitely do not recommend.
So much reading! Seriously, he does not understand that we have more than one class. It's really ridiculous, never again.
Very caring, and helpful professor. He does assign a good amount of reading, but he wants to you truly understand the material. Mike appreciates you lol.
He's genuinely a really nice guy, but he does kind of assign a lot of work. He assigned a lot of readings and some papers, but overall he really isn't that bad. He's an easy grader and most people don't do the readings after a while anyway. Most end up with an A as long as you mildly try
The amount of work he distributes is too much. Had twice as much work from his class alone compared to my other classes. Talks for very lengthy periods of time, is boring when doing so and is incredibly loud as well. As a professor he just fails to make the class interesting. Had a final paper and final exam. I wouldn't recommend him!
He's an okay guy but the books (so many of them) and the assignment's he gives are BEYOND annoying, he's so extra lol. If I could I wouldn't do this course, pick another course/professor. Yet he's like, not horrible, so If you really gotta, go for it lol. He's not the worst. Just don't fall behind on the writing assignments, or you're screwed.
There are 5 response papers and 7 reading notebooks, VERY easy. He gives a lot of detail as to what he wants just read directions carefully, it is not as hard as it seems. When i got the syllabus I wanted to cry and it feels overwhelming but I came out unscathed. But, a forewarning most of the books are boring. His lectures are mainly him talking.
Minter is a knowledgeable when it comes to literature and very informative. However, he tends to speak a lot in class which does not make students want to share their ideas in class. It is true that there is a lot of reading and a lot of work but it helps you do well paper assignments. Take this class if you have a lot of time after school.
Minter is passionate about literature and the work he gives reflects that. There are a lot of writing assignments but are more analytical in nature than tedious summaries just to show you did the reading. Some of the books were very boring. Took this class with a full time job and one other class. Could have done better if I didn't have that job.
Minter is a lot of work for a class that really shouldn't be a lot of work. He takes it very seriously. He makes the whole class sit in a semi-circle for the entire semester. make sure you are prepared to participate because he will call on people randomly. He is very hard to pay attention to. Having said all of that I still think he is a good guy.
If i could give a 6 for the level of difficulty i would. Words cannot describe how hard and time consuming his class is. 95% of my time i spend for college comes from him. I considered many times to drop Macaulay just to get out of his class. JUST, AVOID AT ALL COST!!!
He only assigned 2 books but BE PREPARED TO READ! You will read well over 100+ pages a week. He has journals, BB feedback on classmates work as well as revisions. YOU WILL WORK FOR THIS GRADE! NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART! Test every class on the assigned readings. Best part the class participation & debates! Id take him again! PS: 8 PAGE SYLLABUS!
DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS YOU HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE. The amount of reading is ridiculous, its like he thinks that the only class we have is his. There are a few papers but the papers are a nightmare to write. EXTREMELY BORING IN CLASS TOO. SERIOUSLY CONSIDERED DROPPING MACAULAY BECAUSE OF HIM. You've been warned.
He doesnt seem to understand that he is teaching a common core class. 3 papers, 3 books one of which was war and peace (1500 pages) and 13 quizzes of which 3 get dropped. Some nights he'll assign 50 pages to read some nights he'll assign 200 pages to read. UNREASONABLE for this kind of course, he doesnt seem to get that students have other classes.
Okay, he is a good teacher, not so empathetic and a lot of work. the final paper is a lot of work too BUT after it, the rest of the semester is basically free. its a lot of writing, reading and attendance is strict, but if you want a professor you can learn from then he's your guy. also, he reviews a lot of basic stuff so annoying but easy
AVOID! Unless you love writing boring papers and getting C's then hes for you. If not i suggest avoid! He gives a 15 page paper at the end of the school year thats not doable!
Great professor, challenging. Take if you're prepared for a lot of reading and writing. His grading is pretty generous, he's tougher on you in class. You will come away having thoroughly learned the subject. Lecture heavy, he will get excited by your participation and interrupt you, but don't get offended, he just really loves the points you make.
DON'T TAKE, PERIOD
The amount of reading is ridiculous, its like he thinks that the only class we have is his. There are a few papers but the papers are a nightmare to write.. You've been warned.
Professor Minter helped me improve my writing in so many ways. He is the type of professor that truly loves to teach. He is also open to learning, and he does not assign a lot of work. He is fair, and he just wants you to learn! He is generous, and his office is always open. He is a professor that has inspired me to teach.
If you think you're a good writer/reader then you can take this class w/o a prob. There's a short 3 question quiz once a week to make sure you're reading, fairly simple and short & he's generous with the grades of quizzes. 2 papers- 1 for midterm 1 for final and in class final (basically comparing 2 books that we read in class. he's kind and caring
SO so many field trips, they were all mandatory as well. These were non-negotiable and he would not take excuses regarding these trips that often got you home at around 12 AM (worse if you commute). His classes were reading heavy and there were a lot of assignments, including outside of class group work.
He just lectures on forever about anything, assigns ridiculously long readings that no one even bothered to read, is an extremely harsh grader for no reason, and makes the class trips MANDATORY keep in mind that some resulted in us coming home at around 1 am and we have classes the next day!
Horrible teacher he thinks just because he has a masters that we do too!!! i dropped him after i missed the first day of class due to registration issues and came the second day only to find out there was a 5 page essay already due
Very great and energetic guy. Assigns dense readings and u have discussions based on those readings (philosophical) . Has slides about readinghe reads the part for discussion and asks open-ended questions (i never read anything). Assigns 2 heavy papers but I think at the end he gives out free A's. Final was mad fun (video project). Be rdy to work.
I can't this professor. He thinks this is the only class I have. Does not tell update grades and makes you panic and think you're failing the entire semester. Really hope you only take him if you have no other choice. PAPER HEAVY!!!
I had Prof Minter for a Melville Seminar as a grad student and he supervised my MA thesis. If you read and think critically about the texts, you will enjoy the class and learn a lot! Not to mention, he is accessible and helpful outside of class. He (fairly, imo) expects you to show up (mentally and physically).
Prof. Minter is a fantastic professor. He is passionate, kind and willing to help so don't be afraid to ask for it. There is a lot of reading involved, but if you're an English major you should already be used to it. Stay on top of it and you'll be fine.
If you're an English major taking Professor Minter, the amount of reading he assigns won't make you bat an eyelash so don't be discouraged by some of these reviews. With that being said he has truly been my favorite Professor I've taken thus far. He makes you work for your grade but in the end you'll feel like no words can thank him enough.
He gives too many readings, paper, and assignments. He gives us like 60 pages to read every class. We have to do a worksheet for every chapter. We also have to write in class writings every class. There is a midterm paper and presentation. The final is a research that consists of 20 pages. We also have quizzes. He gives too much for this class.
Professor Minter seems like a tough one at first, but he's actually super down to earth and is really interested in helping his students learn. His class really helped me improve my writing and even though it consisted of a *lot* of reading and a lot of assignments, it was a fairly easy class as long as you didn't procrastinate and did the work!
You can tell the Professor is down to earth but his work load is wayy too much. I would have understood if classes were in person but we are in the middle if a pandemic. I have to work being i have bills to pay and he told me why am I scheduling work the day of his classes. Be prepared for quizzes, 15 page paper, worksheets, readings, and MORE.
Professor Minter is knowledgeable in English. But he assigns heavy workloads, in spite of the difficulties brought upon by the pandemic. It seems he does this overall. He is rather broad in some of his critiques, and he will not update you on your grade throughout the semester either. His heavy workloads means he has a heavy final.
Professor Minter gives a lot of homeworks. He makes us read like we don't have another class. We have in-class writings. He randomly calls on people to participate.
Professor Minter was quite possibly the toughest grader that I'd encountered as an English major, actually got a zero for a few of my essays which is unheard of. But the assignments criteria is very specifically described beforehand and is by far the most helpful in mitigating procrastination and half-hearted writing.
