HE's odd. but I learned to like him.
Don't take him! Worst class I've ever taken at TCC.
If you pass with an A with this teacher, you definitely can only be a future professional writer. He's a really hard teacher and you can barely understand from him how you should write your essay correctly, unless you have an inner predisposition. I got a B and it was really hard gained. More than half of the students in his class dropped.
His lectures are kind of funny because he tries to be funny, but no one laughs. I laughed AT him inside when he tried. He tries hard to keep things interesting. But he's SUPER picky on his essays and is a hard grader.
He is one of the worst teachers. More than half the students dropped the class. Out of the nine remaining students only 4 passed. He doesn't grade papers on time so you don't know how you're doing until too late. Avoid this teacher if you really want to learn how to write.
This class was very informative it wasd pretty easy if you try, i did all my essays the day before and managed 86% on all of them, I went to the writing lab for one essay and recieve a 90 on it. hard think is timed essays(2), but thats about is. ton of class descussion but overall pretty easy
i took him for english 1&2- really strict on his grading, usually behind in telling you your grade. i got b's but for the work and going to the writing lab its not to great.alot of hand outs, only 5 essays-towards the end it got weird because alot of the work was sex poems. yuck
He is a very hard grader and should teach a major's class. Nonetheless, he does know his stuff and is very intelligent. I managed an A but it was very hard earned and definitely takes some natural writing ability. Besides the hard work, the lectures were interesting and overall enjoyable.
He is actually not that hard of a grader, if you have properly learned how to write a paper by this point. There were kids in my class who didn't know what a comma splice was, so obviously they will think he is tough. But he knows the material and teaches it well. If you really are interested in literature, you will enjoy his class.
Not nearly as difficult as everyone makes him out to be. I put forth a little effort and got an A. Very intellegent and informative. Handouts and lectures were interesting and enjoyable. Take his class if you want to learn how to write properly. Ill be in his next class next semester. (ADVICE)Write simply and clearly. Dont try to get fancy.
Throughout this class I felt the teacher was very dry and had very little passion for writing. Grading style was pretty cold. I didn't feel like he wanted you to have an opinion.
hard but fair and clear in his instruction. You have to follow guideline and be clear on your subject. Just do your work like he tell you and you will bw reward with good grade.
This man is a great teacher, he knows his subject and he teaches it on a high level. Though grader but very understanding. He tries to be funny and you just have learn to love him, if you communicate with him he is very helpful and nice. Take his class if you really want to learn something.
he is a GREAT professor!...he loves what he does and he tries to be funny which is funny..he is very nice and helpful and really has a passion for what he teaches!
my friends suggested me to take him in my ENG comp2. I hated him on the 1st time. He was so hard and gave a lot of work...:(...However, I found down that just need to read what he want and do ALL the assignment, u can get EASY B+ (if u r not good at writing) or A (If u r good)...Love this teacher after all..
If you're looking for an easy class and are good at writing take Saari. However if you are not good at writing I suggest you take someone else (if you want an A). Overall the class is easy. Just read what he assigns and you'll ace the quizzes.
He is a very hard teacher, lots of homework and reading. You have a good handfull of essays to write but he gives a good amount of time to get them done. No extra credit and he gives a good amount of quizes. Take him only if you are very good at writing. but he is very nice and helpful when you dont understand something.
Gives helpful hint to being a good writer. He is very lenient and understanding but there is a lot of reading and few writing assignment. There are often in-class discussion that he will ask you to engage in. He is very nice as well.
This teacher knows what he is doing but he grades very hard
He is a good professor I took him for Literature. He does require a lot of reading anywhere between 10-40 pages per day followed by a quiz the next day everyday. He really knows his stuff but grades very hard on everything. He is willing to work with you and help you out. During class he does try to be funny and keep the class interested.
He is a good professor but is extremely strict in grading papers. No one made above 75 on the 1st essay. ONLY pick his class if you are phenomenal in english and never make mistakes. On a side note his choice of stories are questionable usually very grim.
Prev. reviews made it seem like if u work hard enough u will get a good grade but this teacher is condescending, he posts assgnmts. hrs before they are due, and takes mths to grade papers. 3 diff essays were due in the last 2 wks of the semester due to that. if u MUST take this class u must rehash his analyses to pass papers and kiss up in class.
Great guy, interesting, and very lenient on due dates and grades. A little late to grade papers but overall I thought his class was easy and interesting.
Really great guy. He does choose grim works, does take awhile to grade essays, (and grades hard too!) But he is relatively easy. He also talks a bit soft, so don't sit in the back row!
Not a hard lit class at all! However, expect reading every class followed by a quiz. Quizzes are simple though and make for easy A's. Essays were fairly simple as well, only 3 or so pages long double spaced. It just takes him a while to grade them (several weeks). Regardless, I highly recommend this professor!
He was a major influence on me wanting to major in English. On the essays he assigns if you need help, he is more than happy to help you if you visit him in his office. If you do the reading, go to class, and pay attention, you'll do well. The quizzes over the reading are just to make sure you read and if you did you'll have no issues.
Hmm some of the prev reviews r a little suspect...This prof is SOO disorganized. Came late to class, posts quizzes the night before they were due, posts grades MONTHS after assgmts were due, and grades VERY hard. His lectures are aimless and he provides little in-class help on writing and syntax. Papers are expected to reflect his lectures.
Great professor!!! He is very helpful if you are willing to ask for help. Test are very easy and he goes over his expectations of how he wants the papers. Very funny guy and i highly recommend him to anyone.. I had a great time in his class!!!!
I have him from last semester and again I have him this semester also because he is very helpful and very easy. You will enjoy his class and I prefer him to be my english professor.
Nice teacher pay attention n class and do your homework and it will be super easy!!! test are just a hand written esay's really enjoyed his class def.recommend
Great professor. Easy to talk and relate to without getting too far off topic. A bit strict with grading, but hey, this is a college English class. He likes to bring a bit of debate into his class, which makes it enjoyable if you participate. YOU WILL LEARN SOMETHING. Hands down, good professor
I really enjoyed this class! You will learn to write quality papers. Mr. Saari grades a little tough, but is very helpful. There are a lot of reading assignments, but all quick reads. He grades a little tough, but it's easy to make an A if you put in some effort. It does take him awhile to get your grades in. Good professor, great class!
Professor Saari was sweet and helpful. He was very good about discussing the literature and explaining them. The only negative thing would be that we would get behind in class alot and our grades wouldn't come back ASAP. I would recommend Professor Saari.
This class seemed like a lot of work for an English class and half of that work wasn't even looked at. 6 essays, some quizzes and plenty of reading assignments. He can be harsh on grading essays but towards the end of the semester he felt the pressure and was more lenient. I received an A but I would put Professor Saari as a second choice.
Saari was extremely nice. He treated everyone like adults and didn't let you make excuses, although he was somewhat lenient. If you do not like papers, do not take his class. All tests were essays, and we had 4 papers. The homework was a bit much as well, every single class we had a quiz, plus 30-50 pages of reading. Would recommend!
Lots of writing! BUT he is the best English teacher I've had. He works with you and gives you great feedback. I would definitely recommend him.
I LOVE Professor Saari! There are things about him students would not like (yes many essays and assignments given that he doesn't even grade) but there are many qualities that make him a great teacher. His class is NOT HARD, AT ALL. I took him for English Comp I and American Literature to 1876 and made an A in both classes.
Good teacher, but grade very hard on essays. You will have PLENTY of QUIZZES and at least 6 essays to write. You will will have plenty of short stories and poetry to read. The problem is that you need to have a computer ready at the spur of the moment because he puts up quizzes and assignments at the last minute for you to take RIGHT before class.
YOU WILL LEARN SOMETHING. Prof Saari is an awesome teacher, and while I did enjoy his class I found the amount of work required by him to be borderline unreasonable. He will bend over backwards to help you no matter what, he is always there and available, and you will learn. All that comes at a price though, through a massive amount of writing.
I took his class on spring 2013, and it was not bad at all. He is very helpful, and I don't think he grades harsh at all. Now, if you are not that good at spelling and essay composition, don't you think an English professor should grade you accordingly? If you take an easy english professor, you won't learn as much as you should.
MR. SAARI IS A GREAT TEACHER, VERY HOT TO LOOK AT, HE IS FUNNY, AND VERY INTELLIGENT.I WOULD RECCOMMEND TAKING HIS CLASS. HE DOES GIVE OUT A LOT OF WORK BUT ITS SUPER SUPER EASY. AND GREAT THING ABOUT HIM IS THAT HE IS VERY NICE AND LENIENT
BEST TEACHER AT TCC i took him both for english 1 and 2 !! i feel like i not only learned alot and english but i learned alot about myself, this class really goes deeper than just a couple of essays i loved it. high suggest him
He's a great teacher, very understanding, but if you're not ready to work for your "a" don't choose him. A lot of quizzes, discussion posting , essays, everything in the syllabus, go to him, explain, he'll understand and give you another chance. He threaten to give you zero in everything, if you would not turn in your paper in time. He's cool anywa
I should've failed the course but he gave me more chances. He pushed me to do better. I didn't think I learned anything but since I took his class I have become a better student & have made an A in Eng 1302. He does care about his students succeeding. He pushes you because he sees potential in you. Would recommend! very intelligent man.
Such a great professor! I took him for English comp II and I would definitely take him again. He assigns a lot of stories followed by quizzes (I mean it IS an English class) and he may let the the class retake the quiz if the majority didn't do very well. Easy class!
Pretty easy class. There's lots of reading each class &a lot of quizzes. Quizzes are online though & are usually easy. Sometimes there would 40 pages of reading which was overwhelming at times. Essays are graded fairly. But I didn't like how 3 essays were given @ end of sem. & were graded right before grades were due so I didnt know my final grade
Easy class if you have friends in there, hard grader on the first essay, but the rest A's them. The final is in class essay, which was easy because he had to grade it last minutes so he will just give an A for it. A nice teacher who will help if you go to his office. A lot of quizzes and readings.
10 question reading Quiz almost every night. The questions are easy but if enough students complain(3-4) he lets the class retake. Be prepared to be called upon because he likes for the students to be engaged in the lecture. 5(6?) Essays total but you're given enough time if you dont procrastinate like I did. MOST IMPORTANT ALWAYS CHECK BLACKBOARD!
Horrible teacher. Gives a lot of homework, he grades your papers way too hard, his lectures are completely irrelevant to your homework, does not reply to emails, and on top of that, if you take him twice a week, he assigns your homework at the last minute. Do not take.
Nice guy, and I for the most part enjoyed his class. Actually did learn quite a bit. The only issue I'd say is he would get a little carried away in his lectures and got pretty far behind in the course plan. He ended us assigning 4 essays in the last month of class. CHECK BLACKBOARD, puts up homework for every class, quizzes and such.
Gives homework last minute for each class and quiz over the readings (multiple readings each night, 20+ pages) Can find all the readings online, summaries on shmoop, sparknotes, etc. 3 essays due in the last month of class bc he got behind on grading, only gives you like two weeks to do each. Dont take if youre full time student and work full time
Worst teacher to take I cannot stress it enough!!!!!
His jokes are terrible so bad the ones that make you cringe like dude their not funny. God like when you think it's so bad their terrible he thinks highly of himself but dude like your and ENGLISH TEACHER come back to reality. He is not anything close to a good teacher
He's alright. He's a good teacher and definitley knows his stuff. Wasn't the worse teacher I've had, but he will be there for you if you need help. Don't expect a short cut taking this class. You will have to work for your A. Will let you retake quizzes towards end of semester. Really Nice guy just a tough teacher.
Prof Saari is very passionate and really cares about his students success in class for example, he gave those students who slacked off second chances. He is a funny old man but I will add that his sense of humor was a bit awkward sometimes. Nonetheless, if you want to learn and take English Comp seriously this is a great course.
He will give online quizzes at random times. Don't be loud in his class. A lot of writing, so be prepared and specific. I wrote 5 essays plus the final exam, which will be hand written. English Composition 2.
If you wanna pass English, TAKE THIS CLASS. You have to be pretty serious when you're taking his class, too. Work with this guy, and you'll get an easy A. TRUST ME.
All the short stories &poems discussed all had to do with death and odd sexual preferences ect. You will have homework every night, they're mostly quizzes online. He seems to overwhelmed with all the classes he teaches, he could never remember what he assigned what class and couldn't even keep up with all the work crammed in at the end of the sem
Such a sweet old man. A lot of work in this class but you will get an easy A if you put some work into your assignments. He even lets you turn in late work. Lots of online quizzes about short stories which end up helping your grade at the end of the semester. They are so easy. Take notes!! They will help you when writing essays!!!
I took his class and had to drop it because he's that bad of a teacher. I had family things going on and he wasn't understanding of anything, he opens quizzes late at night (every night) and expects them done before the next class, including reading a ton of work. Horrible on helping students and has the type of attitude of a stuck up person.
he puts you on the spot every class. he doesn't allow cell phones whatsoever. you'll have to read your writings in class sometimes and he'll correct you, trying to help you but its a little intimidating. for the most part no re-takes on quizzes, which are very tricky. he's not necessarily mean but no gem.
Professor Saari is honestly a great guy. He really cares about his students and wants them to pass his class. If you miss classes for a good reason, he will give you extra time to finish assignments. There are quite a few reading assignments and essays. But after all, it is an English class.
Professor Saari is a very technical teacher. Instead of focusing on the content of papers, he focuses more on grammar and formatting. Expect to have readings every night along with a quiz and a discussion board. Your discussion boards will be read aloud to the class and he will pick on you and make you feel inferior. I'd look for a different prof.
SOOOO MUCH HOMEWORK! He's very rude and just a bad teacher overall. I honestly don't know how I got a B in his class. Get ready to read A LOT of George Orwell. His class is so boring and homework, lecture, and writing heavy. Don't take unless you love to read and write!
He's great. Gave about 3 papers the whole year but be prepared to read short stories and online quizzes. Not too bad. You do not have to be in class to learn much. Most pf the hw is online and you get the answers yourself but for attendance, its important
Mr. Saari overall is a great guy. He often says he won't accept late work but in the end he always does. Expect to have homework EVERY night until the end of the semester. Lots of stories to read. Extra credit is available . You can skip as much class as you want and he won't drop you. Not a bad class, just too much homework in my opinion.
He gives you a lot of homework. He usually requires you to do the discussion boards because at the end of the semester he counts it as extra credit. His grading is fair and he requires you to participate in class discussions.
Homework, quizzes, reading everyday. And he only post it the day before its due not the day you have class. Tough grader. Borring
if you really study hard you goona get an A. he is great and sweet man. his lectures are very nice and worth your time you will learn too many things.
Prof Saari is probably the best teacher I ever had so far. I wish all of my teachers are like him. He does give a lot of homework after all it's an English Class. I speak 5 different languages beside English. It was quite a challenge for me, but his teaching skills are amazing. Listen to him and participate in class it's a definite "A"
Homework every night over readings and quizzes but they arent very difficult. There is a total of six essays over the semester and he falls behind do some of them end up being assigned close together. He lectures through the whole class and gets off topic very easily, and he likes when people participate. Overall a good teacher and a good class.
I have really enjoyed his class. There's a lot of reading, soo if you don't like that don't take it.
very boring teacher, I advise not to take him if you get bored easily. very heavy on quizzes.
Readings and quiz before every class and maybe 6 essays total. He is super boring in class, but the work is straightforward.
I took professor Saari my first semester out of high school. His class consists of 30 quizzes (majority on blackboard) & 6 essays, including the midterm and final. He would give, on average, 1-3 quizzes every class but they are pretty easy as long as you read the material he gives you. A lot of work but it was not hard, just turn everything in.
GREAT TEACHER just do your work and you will pass! In college EFFORT IS NECESSARY Fun lectures
In class he may lecture a lot, but he really is a great professor and really wants you to succeed as a student. Honestly one of the best teachers at TCC
He is really caring and flexible as long as you participate and show that youre trying. He wants you to pass. You will write papers so be prepared. He does his best to tell you what he wants in your paper and explains how to format them. But participate! He is happier when you do. And do the discussion boards! They are extra credit. Overall great!
Geoffrey is one of the worst professors possibly in the history of teachers. He pushes his own ideologies and views in the class and expects people to believe they are true. You're a light weight English teacher. Come back to reality!
Very conservative and likes to have everything be abound something political. Asked students if they were fat or skinny. Im 30 and have already gone through college once. Worst professor Ive ever had. Needs to retire!
Great professor, caring and helpful. Fun class
SAVE YOUR SANITY. He assigns a new essay before one is due. didn't even grade said essays until I already turned in my final essay. SO MANY SHORT STORIES WITH 10 QUESTION QUIZZES. I can't even count how many we did. Always contradicts himself on what he expects from the essays.
EXCESSIVE 10 question short story quizzes. It starts out slow with papers but he dumped 3-4 of them right at the end which was totally overwhelming. He took FOREVER to grade essays. He is very old and can be forgetful, constantly asking students to remind him of things. His lectures run forever and his voice is droning. He should retire soon.
Professor Saari is a great teacher. I have to give him credit on that. I actually learned a lot, but he assigns too many essays! There was one point we were working on 3 essays at one time! very difficult and overwhelming. He is also very passive aggressive which is a no go for me If you do decide to take his class DO NOT take any other classes!!
Great teacher and speaker essays are easy :)
Lots of essays but very clear
If you want to remain sane after this, do not take him! He takes FOREVER to grade ANYTHING. He isn't open to anyone else's opinions and can come off as demeaning in his emails. He grades essays harshly and most of his comments in the graded essays make no sense. Lastly, he got upset with me for turning in things early. That should say enough...
Absolutely the worst teacher I have ever had. First off, he imposes his personal biases as the only correct interpretation of the text presented. Upon submitting our essays, our class received an average grade of a low seventy simply because we didn't comply with his interpretation of how things should be written. He needs to retire!
Highly Intelligent professor who has passion teaching English. Made me appreciate lots of authors. Loved this professor! Thanks for everything Mr. SAARI
Very old school professor, expects A LOT from students but also cares about them. Flexible with late work. Gets EVERYONE engaged in class, prepare to be called on. 6 papers total including final, midterm and research paper. Lots of quizzes, dbs, short stories and poems. He's an MLA freak. If you want to keep your sanity avoid him. Too overwhelming
The class was so bad. I wanted to give it a zero, but that's not possible. So I give it a 1. *Takes a long time to grade, 6 essays, many readings, and quizzes such as MLA. However, he is forgiving about late work and is knowledgeable.
He is an interesting man. he truly cares about his students and their grades. VERY forgiving about late work. His essay prompts were very outdated. However, he gives two essay prompts so you get to choose, so that's nice. A LOT of essays and very late grader. All but one of the essays was graded at the very end of the semester.
One of the most caring proffesors I've taken. There are a lot of quizzes over small readings, if you fail the quiz, HE ALWAYS ALLOWS YOU TO RETAKE IT, you will not fail this class. there are 6 essays. He is very MLA heavy, but did throw 3 essay on you at one time near the end of the semester. Would recommend. Very clear on what he wants in papers.
Overall he is a very nice and caring professor. Every class you will have homework that is usually a quiz over a short article, normally 10 questions (true or false) A lot of homework and a very tough grader but just be prepared for alot of work
I took professor Saari for two semesters (Comp I and II), overall he is a nice and funny teacher. If you fail a quiz he will allow you to retake it. Provides extra credit through discussion posts if you do them all. The workload did get overwhelming and sometimes you will have papers assigned back to back. Something WILL be due every class.
I will be honest he is a nice person, However, I do not like the way he teaches his class. His expectations can be borderline unreasonable. Additionally, as someone with a learning disability who requires accommodation, he did not really go out of his way to accommodate my needs as a student who wants to excel in his class.
Although he is a nice person and very engaging he assigns a lot of work to be done. Lots of quizzes and discussion boards are due almost every day of class. My biggest gripe about him is assigning many essays within a week of each other towards the end of the semester and assigning an essay due the day of the final and another for the exam.
He is a nice professor. However, he unreasonably publishes a new assignment due for your next class typically the day before that class and there are tons of stories and quizzes accompanying them. If you don't want to get overwhelmed with assignments, do not take him.
Do not take this class if you have a life besides just studying, the professor has more than one quiz every time before class and there are a lot of papers you have to do. A lot of reading if you need to pass. In short, takin this class will surely take a lot of your time
Do not take him. He is very unorganized and expects a lot from the students without returning help back. He will reopen quizzes that are do EVERY class period but he assigns essays weekly at the end of the semester. He waits very LAST MINUTE (after exams) to grade your essays. Don't expect to know your actual grade all semester.
he was a great teacher just a slow grader . His lectures are boring but if you listen you get the answers to the quizzes. The quizzes are assigned every class day . He does require the textbook,
Very nice teacher, there are assignments due every class period but they are not difficult
One of the easiest class I have taken so far, his lectures are really good. just participate in discussion posts and follow his instructions carefully for the assignments and exam. you can easily get a good grade.
Prof. Saari is very understanding and will work with you to get a good grade. Always talk to him, he helped me gain a good understanding of material I did not understand. There will always be something due every single class. Towards the end of the semester we had papers back to back. lots of busy work and last minute assignments
He looks like 70s Clint East Wood!
He's a good teacher and he really knows his stuff. As someone with a record of failing English I actually learned a lot from his lectures. The course overall was okay. He assigned hw the day before it's due which wasn't that bad but he takes forever to grade written assignments so get ready to not know your real grade until the semester ends
Professor Saari is passionate about English and makes the class engaging. While the workload can be heavy, he's understanding and flexible. Unstuck ai was a game-changer for study prep. Overall, a challenging but worthwhile course.
Passionate about English, he is one of my favorite professors ever. Barely assigns homework and they are very very easy, and he allows you to retake them. Gives you many resources to help you write your essays the way he wants you to, so that you know how your essay will be graded. One of the nicest professors ever, he is a must take
He does assign homework but it was easy. Definatly would try to get on his good side, so you can pass. Dont ake advantage of him. I showed up late because of a flat tire and he cared about it. He's very clear and concise.
He his a great professor! super nice and gives lot of chances! HW due every day of class. Lots of reading. He gives pop vocab quizzes. JUST DO THE WORK and you will pass his class.YES he reads all of them. It takes an Extreme AND NEGLECT ON YOUR END to fail his class. Dont be on your phone in his class or you will fail. WOULD RECOMEND.
Worst professor ever, TRUST!! He takes an incredibly long time to grade, don't expect anything until the end of the year. Attendance is mandatory which he complains about if you're late. He assigns an overloading amount of work with no regard for outside issues or classes. Due to not turning in ONE assignment he dropped my grade from a 92% to a 56%
The most boring lectures of my life. He enjoys making class harder than it has to be. Be prepared to do readings, discussion boards (that aren't graded but required) , quizzes and essays EVERY week.
He is a great professor! He is super nice and gives you a lot of chances. You can just listen to his instructions, and you will pass.
just don't. trust me, DO NOT take this professor. you are better off just finding someone else. his lectures are long, monotone, and boring. on top of 6 ESSAYS he also assigns simultaneously and expects completed multiple, and i mean MULTIPLE, readings, quizzes, and discussions boards (THAT AREN'T GRADED), as well as being strict on attendance.
Do you have enough time to read an entire library?? Find some else.
RUN!!!! Do not take him, dreaded his monotone lecture so much I had to drop my class. Yes there is a syllabus but he was all over the place with lecture, there is no structure. Be prepared for the side track conversations. He's a nice person, but don't be late or absent he will call you out in front of the whole class.
This professor was amazing honestly. I never had a teacher who knew the stories with so much details, and he's really caring and truly has the best interest to make you pass. The assignments are easy as most of them just requires you to read the stories he provides and the essays as well!
Definitely, a very annoying class. WAYYY too many things to read and quizzes every single day. Would not take him again if had the chance to.
Very kind and understanding professor. You will have homework due every class!! But for the most part not difficult. Takes long to grade.
Kind professor however lectures monotoned and boring/ announcements have a lot to do you may get overwhelmed when looking over. My biggest issue with this class is putting grades in last min towards the end of the semester and dropping like several essays on top of another due the day of the final on top of our final being another essay.
READ THIS. A good amount of work but it is college. VERY SPECIFIC WITH EVERYTHING. 4 essays, 2-4 assignments given day of for next class. It gets a little much at times but could manage. Gives grace about late work. Has his moment of cutting people off and can treat you like a child but If you have to take him for credit, just do it.
