Easy Class. Good Professor. Tries his best to help each student. Obviously use his office hours and he will go above and beyond to help you pass.
He is a great guy and lecturer, very engaging but when it comes to exams don't expect anything he talked about in class to be on the exams; its all graphs and charts that you've never seen before and you have to analyze them to determine the answer to his questions; doesn't let you see the answers to your exams you have to go meet with him; tough
Honestly, one of the best professors I've had at UConn. Dr. Tanner's lectures are great. He uses specific examples and awesome analogies that convey the concept really well. On top of that his office hours are the best time to reach out to him, because he will take the time to explain a concept to you. His exams are tough, but fair and doable.
Exam questions are bafflingly specific and far too complicated even for simple concepts, and seem to be designed specifically to trick students who really know the material into the wrong answer. Large swaths of material emphasized in lecture are impossible to find in textbook and sometimes even online.
Tanner gives interesting lectures, but goes on tangents which take up the entire class. He then gives exams on the material that he never covered. His slides are convoluted and hard to follow and his exams are meant to trick you. He also refused to release exams after they were taken so you never know what you actually don't understand. Good luck.
Dr. Tanner is a great lecturer and definitely knows what he's teaching. Unfortunately, he is awful at making exam questions. Usually they are very convoluted and confusing, so it basically sets you up to pick the wrong answer. This was his first year teaching, so hopefully he improves in the future, but for now beware of his hard exams.
He is honestly so incredible, yes the class is dense, but he is able to dumb it down to our levels and help us understand it. 10/10 recommend
Nice guy, approachable and helpful. The course is dense (it's A+P), but manageable with the lecture slides provided. Don't buy the book. He sucks at managing time so you will likely have to teach yourself the last few slide sets. Lab 2 Practicals, weekly quiz + prelabs - None are that bad. Go to class - If he talks about it A LOT then know it.
Dr. Tanner is a great lecturer and definitely knows what he's teaching. He is funny and engaging. Unfortunately, he is awful at making exam questions. The questions are very wordy and difficult making the exams impossible. They don't come right from the lecture slides so I recommend you get the book and read outside of class and review 24-7.
I absolutely love love loved Dr. Tanner's lectures. He makes it entertaining and engages the class - its usually not just him lecturing you for the whole hour 15. The exams are hard but I think they are fair - definitely read and go to lecture and really take time aside for this class!
Dr Tanner is honestly one of the best professors at UConn. He is excellent, passionate, and engaging in lecture. Even though the lecture has at least 300 people, he conducts it like an engaging conversation. He even puts effort in knowing our names. The material is however tough. Any bad reviews I believe is a reflection on the material, not him.
My favorite professor at UConn. His exams are tough but fair. He really goes above and beyond with his students, and holds group office hours right after lecture. He even does review sessions for the exams. 10/10
Honestly, Dr. Tanner is a very nice man who seems to care about his students. BUT, he is also one of the most disorganized professors I have had here at UConn. His office hours are limited, and when trying to set up a meeting with him for extra help he probably can't. Definitely favors certain students, and excludes the rest. Exams are awful.
Dr. Tanner has been my favorite professor at UConn. He goes to great lengths to help students succeed. He teaches a tough class, but manages to make it engaging and entertaining. Go to his office hours - they are essentially little review sessions. If you are willing to challenge yourself, this class and Dr. Tanner will do just that!
Very lecture heavy, but explains challenging concepts very well. His tests are difficult, but I always end up missing him when the other professor takes over. He's energetic and funny, even if the content can be dry. Make sure to take good notes and put in the time outside of class.
Tanner is definitely one of my favorite professors here at UConn. His tests were difficult and required a lot of studying but I missed him once we switched professors. Tanner genuinely cares about his students and tries to connect with them by learning their names in a lecture of 300+ students.
Dr. Tanner is my favorite professor I've had at UConn. He is engaging and explains material clearly. He records lectures. Material is dense. I re-listened to every lecture and took detailed notes (12+ hrs of studying/exam). Exam q are mainly conceptual. Hosts office hours, review sessions, exam review sessions. Cares about students. TA ppts helpful
Dr. Tanner knows his stuff and is very nice. His lectures are very engaging and the material is very interesting. His exams are very difficult. Even if you're doing well in lab and think you know the material, you might come out of the exam crying. No review guide, just some MC questions. Memorize everything. Watch out for Exam 2, it'll haunt you.
Prof Tanner is a nice professor who really cares about his students, but his tests are hard. He does try to make the material easier to understand but there is a lot of content for each tests. Definitely look through the slides and memorize everything, even the pictures and graphs. He definitely makes the class bearable at 8am.
Tanner is an unbelievably intelligent man. His lectures are dense, and his exams are difficult, but you will learn so much about physiology. Very approachable and caring, and always does his best for his students. He tries to learn every single one of his students' names in a class of 200+, which just goes to show that he's the man.
Super engaging lecturer, which makes recalling material when studying much easier. His primary goal is to help his students learn. Focus on understanding and making study guides in advance from recorded lectures and practice questions and you will learn the material. Exams are doable if you commit yourself to understanding the physiology.
As mentioned below the tests are tough, both in comprehension and material, but Tanner puts so much effort into the class and it shows! He uploads videos of each of his lectures, which really makes a difference when studying. The class is brutal, but he teaches it so well, and actively shows that he wants his students to learn, its hard to complain
Amazing lecturer actually engaging and interesting at 8am, his tests are really difficult make sure to fully understand the material and apply it. when taking this class make sure you put 15hr a week just to study not really a textbook so only lecture to go off of. One of the best professors I have ever had just wish the class was a smaller size.
Tanner is a cool guy but he makes his exams nearly impossible. Getting him to further explain things in office hours is like pulling teeth. He has a hard time focusing on one thing and if he doesn't get to all the material you are responsible for learning it on your own for the exam. He's much more focused on meeting the deadlines than teaching.
His exams are awful. I showed up to all his lectures and listen to the recorded lectures multiple times, so I basically knew everything. But he makes his exams impossible so no matter how much you know, you would still fail. This class is a lot for me even tho I love bio. I really wish there was another prof instead of him
Dr. Tanner is a unique professor. He is a gem. He does his very best to convey the information in the clearest and definitely makes you work for good grades. His tests are challenging but not impossible. Overall, Dr. Tanner taught me to stay focused and to make the most out of the exciting material we learn. His teaching style is beyond amazing!
Tanner is a great teacher and makes the material enjoyable to learn. The downfall is that the tests are extremely difficult, even if you think you know everything from lecture. You need to be able to apply the concepts. I would put in 20+ hours for exams but still got bad results. Lab is killer. Way harder than 1107. Pro tip, don't take with orgo.
Dr. Tanner definitely knows his stuff, but his lectures are super dense and hard to follow without rewatching them later. The exams are only on lecture material, so you 100% have to go to class because the exam questions are really tough!!
He makes his exams impossible. By far the most difficult I have taken. I have studied for hours on end and still cannot manage to get above a 75. One of those professors that if he doesn't teach it, you're still responsible for it on exams. His slides are a HOT mess and extremely overwhelming and messy. If it wasn't for him I'd be able to get an A
Yes A+P is very hard and his exams are very hard, but I have never learned more than when he was teaching. For the exams you need to know how to interpret the material in the forms of graphs and application problems not just memorize things. Despite being the hardest class I have taken so far and lecture being at 8am I never skipped b/c he is a gem
It's been a few years, but I've returned to say this. Prof. Tanner is a very nice man and is quite comical, but I should be frank: PNB 2274 and 2275 were my most despised classes during my time at UConn. They are very difficult, and the 8 AM schedule does no favors. As nice as Prof. Tanner may be, he could have done more to reduce the difficulty.
Tanner is the worst prof. I have had yet at UConn, but there is literally no other option. His tests are so hard, and are a lot of conceptual questions that make it so hard to get a good grade, despite hours of studying. Currently taking it during COVID and he does all the exams on lockdown-browser with camera and recording. Rarely gives ex. credit
Not a good professor. Chen is 2000 times better. Unfortunately, if you plan on taking 2274 or 75 you have to take him which sucks cuz I would much rather take Chen over him. Exams are extremely hard and lectures are hard to keep up with.
Dr. Tanner really knows the subject well. He posts his lecture recordings, so you don't have to attend the 8am. His exams are difficult, but office hours help so much. Grade is based on 4 exams + lab, so you have to do well on the exams to get a good grade. He's very nice, but his exam questions are not easy
no cap but he is the worst professor at Uconn. he is okay at delivering the content, however, his exams are impossible so it does not even matter. whatever you learn in his section is so packed together and its too much information, you would end up forgetting. Chen, however, is way better.
Lectures are extremely dense but explains all the concepts very well. His exams are very difficult because it's application base. I studied a week in advance, 15 hours per exam (2) and averaged a 86. You will be playing catch up all semester. Ace all Chens exams (2), practicals (2) and lab to get an A. Overall, good teacher just too tough on exams
You really have to work your butt off for this class- I think I ended up teaching myself more than Tanner did. He's smart and definitely knows his stuff, but lectures are really dense, super fast, disorganized, and in my opinion very badly run in online lectures. What is helpful though is that Chen is much easier and your grade can be saved :)
Tanner is a great guy but for a 'anatomy 1' class, the material and pace is similar to something expected with medical school. Exam questions are insanely specific and all application based. There is almost no extra credit and no curve for the class. Extremely difficult to get an A in. Lab online is horrible and hard to retain all the info thrown
Good lord these exams are straight up impossible, but you really don't have a choice since he's the only one who teaches the class. The class really is just suffering through his part of the semester, then getting to Chen and instantly having your grade increase. My tip is to rewatch the lectures and pray it makes sense the second time.
Tanner is an incredible prof and very knowledgable about his subject. Heed the his warnings when he says "a semester can be won or lost in the first couple of weeks". Lectures and slides are pretty disorganized but you can do well if you study hard and very often. Textbook is helpful but not a necessity.
If you've taken Tanner before you know the vibe. Lectures are fast and chaotic but you learn a lot. The course is only 9 weeks and it was nice to have no exams, just pre-lecture reading quizzes and then weekly quizzes. Warning- do not take this class unless you like electrophysiology.
Having Dr. Tanner for PNB 3251 this summer was an absolute joy. He is extremely passionate about neurophysiology, and truly cares if students are understanding the material. It was a small class with a lot of quality discussion and participation. Highly recommend taking this course, and even staying after class to get to know him!
he is difficult but anatomy always is. His exams are tough but fair. take this class more seriously than I did and an A is certainly within reach
This class is TOUGH and honestly the hardest class I've taken as a junior at UConn. I studied a ton for his exams, went to all of Kate's review sessions and most of her office hours, and still ended the class with a B+. His questions are just tricky and usually they incorporate multiple details from lecture so I'd say focus on all slides very close
Dr. Tanner is a great professor. I will say that his exams are tough, so you definitely have to study. I didn't get the best grades on his exams, but that was on me and not the professor. Go to office hours and put in time for the class and you'll be fine. Most bad reviews are because they did poorly on exams. It's not the professor.
love dr. tanner!! you can see how much he loves neuro, and he will do whatever needed to ensure students understand material. very different class from 2274/75. 1 essay or test (you pick), weekly quizzes (not super easy but not super difficult), and in class worksheets. interesting content, and tanner teaches it in the clearest way. 9 week class
Amazing & applicable class! However, this class is difficult. Attending lectures is a must. Rewriting notes and creating study guides. His exams are tough and application based. Know those concepts! There is a lab portion. I would highly recommend attending his office hours, lecture TA & undergrad TAs, to ask questions! Very doable, but ALOT!!!!
2275 is a difficult class, but if you use the resources provided and put in the effort, you will do fine. Tanner does the first 1/2, is application-based, and provides study guides for his exams. Learn everything on the study guide and the presentations for the exams. 2275 was generally easier than 2274 (and more interesting)
He seemed out of touch in Spring 2022 semester. Was not approachable or helpful. Did well in the class because of Chen and my own studying.
Material was difficult and a lot but Dr.Tanner truly cares about his students and helped me so much during office hours. He was very fair with his grading and only had tests after each class (no exams). He was very engaging and I actually learned during his half of the class (as opposed to the other half of the class with Dr. F)
Study, study, study. Don't get behind or you will drown. All exam questions are application only. His lectures aren't bad for 8am, but just writing notes in lecture isn't enough, you have to put lots of work into this ENHANCED class.
Tanner's exams are incredibly hard. Completely application based. You can even get a question on the exam about a small thing that was in the right corner of a powerpoint. He pretty much interacts really with the front of the class. He speaks very fast, I feel like he is very disorganized. Jumps from thought to thought over and over again. Goodluck
Literally the only reason I showed up for 8 am lecture. Explained difficult concepts clearly, answered questions, and repeats important things so much you would have to try to miss them. One time he threw silly puddy at the wall to demonstrate bone properties. Offers office hours too. If you put in the work studying for exams, you'll be all set.
Absolutely awesome professor. Very knowledgeable, comical, and great at explaining and emphasizing important concepts. Exams are mostly application based with some easier questions, but very fair as long as you took detailed lecture notes. I found his half to be more enjoyable than Chen's as his lectures flowed well and were very clear.
I personally really enjoyed the subject and thought the lecture material was interesting. The slides he uses are pretty easy to follow, and he goes over the most important points slowly and thoroughly. One thing I will say though is that he wasn't as approachable, and was a bit dismissive without fully hearing people through.
he is not the best professor and i am unsure why his rating on here is so high. He literally rants and his powerpoints are literally very disorganized. His exams are hard for no reason and not enough time given.
His exams are really hard. He doesn't give enough time on his exams and some questions require a LOT of time to understand. I went to office hours once, and I felt like it was very condescending and hurtful. He loves what he does which is obvious, but his lectures are very confusing and disorganized. He always picks on the same people to answer q's
Great overall guy, with pretty well written presentations. However, his tests are extremally conceptual based and requires complete knowledge and understanding of his topics to receive a good grade. As long as you maintain a decent grade in the first two exams in the course, Chen will take over and you can save your grade!
I was super nervous hearing about Tanner's exams, which had a reputation for being incredibly hard but found that his exams were fair. It does require a deep understanding, however, the lectures were awesome. The only hard part about the honors conversion was waking up for it. Definitely will take any PNB courses taught by him in the future.
He is interesting to listen to during lectures, but be prepared to write a crazy amount of notes because just about everything he says can appear on an exam. He talks extremely fast and sometimes it is impossible to keep up with the notes in class. The exams are extremely difficult and he enjoys including long story question, slight extra credit.
A passionate professor that covers the physiology aspect of the course. His exams are much harder than Chen's as they are more conceptual and require a full understanding of the content. He also offers less extra credit on his exams. Exams are 75% of your grade, so be sure to survive his 2 exams, then Chen will save your grade.
This class gave me PTSD. I used to study everyday for at least an hour, with preparation for the exams at least one week in advance, but still did not do well at all. The questions on exams are very complex, application based, with some topics not even mentioned in class. I recommend to not have other hard courses in your schedule when taking this.
really inconsistent with time. weekly quizzes are assigned at the most random times and are different each week. sometimes it can be 4am to 7pm or sometimes 5am- 9pm. its the most random times and the exams and quizzes are very conceptual and he includes everything in his exams even if he mentions for only 3 seconds.
This teacher was terrible if someone else is teaching the class take them. He tested on every little molecule and complex. There was math and too chemistry barely any anatomy everything was conceptual. The tests had to too much material to study. There was no curves barely extra credit. The questions on weekly quizzes and exams were too specific.
Tanner lectures on whatever he feels like, but will test you on every detail. Other than being a poor lecturer, he was dismissive when talked to outside of class and made some antisemitic comments that bothered a lot of his Jewish students. Xinnian is so helpful, but not enough to make Tanner's half worth it.
Dr. Tanner appears to be kind and compassionate at first, but then a different side of him comes out during the quizzes and exams. You could memorize every single word on the slides, and there will still be questions on the tests and quizzes that contain never heard before terminology and require you to conceptualize. He seems to lack empathy.
This professor was completely awful, he made me change my major because I started hating myself. His test were unnecessarily hard and conceptual, his quizzes had material that was not covered in the slightest during lecture. Lecture was pointless as it was recorded.
I liked Tanner's lectures a lot. His portion of the class is difficult and you will have to put in a lot of work, but he engages the class in a way that you won't get bored. I would go to class and take light notes then rewatch lectures and it helped incredibly, you probably won't understand from listening once. You will learn a lot!
Amazing professor. Attending lectures and re-watching them is essential to doing well in this course. Listen to the way he actively asks questions throughout the lectures and office hours and do the same thing when studying. He wants you to actually LEARN. Difficult, but this is the only professor that has taught me how to study in college.
Tanner's lectures were good. Lecture slides contained pretty much everything you would need to know for quizzes and exams. Very detailed but wanted us to really learn the concepts. Was always asking the class questions and emphasizing important concepts during lecture to make sure we know and understand them.
Dr. Tanner is a very intelligent guy who wants his students to succeed; however, he talks so fast during lectures and expects students to intake around 100 slides of information in one lecture. The questions on his exams are so lengthy and jam-packed that it takes a lot of time to process what he is asking. Overall nice guy but a tough professor.
I loved this course. Dr. Tanner did a great job of making his students LEARNED the material, not just memorized and copied it. He explained things in an extremely easy to understand way, and was always open to spending more time on a subject if students needed. I like that you could essentially choose how you were graded.
Actually cares about you learning the material, which is why his exams are so hard. But he explains things very well. He offers a bit of extra credit (0.25 points for each assignment) but from what I could notice, these points were added directly onto your final grade percentage, not just a test grade. So it's much more than I originally thought.
he's a genius and really good at explaining different topics and compares it to things to make it easier to understand but his exams are all application and very difficult, there's barely any time to finish. he grades harshly, you need to understand the content very well and be able to apply everything, lectures are recorded.
Dr. Tanner is an amazing lecturer, and despite being an 8AM class, is always energized an enthusiastic. He is super knowledgeable...BUT this will come to bite you on the exams. Exams are definitely fair, but they are really difficult. This simply one of those classes you need to know every little piece of info for. Also, no curve ever.
Dr. Tanner is an amazing amazing lecturer really helps you understand the material... however the exams are insanely difficult and you really have to prepare well, most of the questions are conceptual, idk anyone from my sem who got an A!
Best lecturer I've had. For such difficult material I found that just watching his lectures and taking very detailed notes of everything he said was all I needed. However this is why his exams are extremely conceptual and can be hard if you don't truly know the content. Big time commitment as expected but he's fun to listen to.
He's an honest professor, he knows what he's talking about and makes it easy to understand. What I didn't like about the two professors was how much they emphasized things being “fair game” for exams. It makes it extremely difficult to study for it bc they would preach up and down that everything they've ever gone over is going to be on the exam.
Dr. Tanner is one of the best lecturers at UConn. The content is very difficult and dense, but Tanner delivers the information well. Must study and 4 exams make up 80%. Make sure to go to office hours and class. Lectures are recorded but usually takes a couple rewatches to understand some content.
A funny professor but his slides are very unorganized and hard to understand. Definitely knows what he is talking about but his exam questions are very incredibly difficult to understand. Make sure that you are prepared for this class, as it is way more difficult than it should be.
Great class and the content was interesting but Tanner was probably the most unfair professor I have had to date. Exams changing from 60% to 80% this semester is one thing but he also tried to include content that he taught on a snow day into our exam that we were having the next day. Great lecturer but is just not understanding at all
ran the first part of class, exams are worth 80% total but online lockdown at home. this class was at 8am, but i always came when he was teaching bc he always made class fun and made sure you actually knew the concept. he would review it over and over, and loved questions and getting to know students. overall great, but a hard class still
highly recommend. actually the best professor. as someone who hates school, I got up every morning at 8 am for this class. professor tanner actually makes this class so interesting/engaging. exams are 80% of your grade. they're tough, but not unreasonable and the questions are pretty fair. no homework. weekly quizzes and worksheets in discussion.
One of the best teachers I've had. The class is difficult because of the material, not the professor. If you put in the work to study and review, you'll do well. 8 am class, but I always came in because lectures were entertaining and the prof made sure to clarify any questions students had. Small amount of extra credit from practice worksheets.
Dr. Tanner is a great lecturer. This class is very test heavy, so be sure to prepare for each exam, but there is an optional final that you can take to replace your lowest exam grade. This class is difficult, but Tanner makes it digestible and breaks it down nicely. He engages with his students and posts recordings as well.
Tanner shines in his upper level courses. This class taught me so much, and I absolutely loved every second of it. It is so interesting, and reminded me why I chose PNB as my major. He knows the material very well and takes time to explain it thoroughly. Exam options were also great, I chose the essay and only had to do one exam (60% of grade!)
Such a great professor, pay attention and participate! He's so knowledgeable and what he's taught STICKS years after. Honestly if you pay attention and take notes, the course is a breeze and deeply interesting. Graded on quizzes (super fair), writing assignments (not hard at all), and participation.
"What the sigma. 67"- Dr. Tanner 2025
Genuinely amazing. Lowkey the ratings scared me because they said it's hard but the exams are some of the most straight forward questions I've ever had in my life (coming from someone that struggled through biology...), like they would be questions on things he has said like 100 times in class. Definitely go to lecture or watch the videos he posts.
The biggest favor anyone taking this class can do for themselves is GO TO CLASS. Tanner is the best lecturer I've ever had at UConn. He's super passionate and he knows his stuff and he presents it a way that's easy to understand. Exams are difficult but 100% doable if you study and GO TO CLASS.
Genuinely please do not take this class with Tanner and Rich for your sake. I will get an A in this class but it was absolutely not worth it. The professors are less than accessible outside of class. Even if the worst possible event of your life happens to you, they will not help you at all (extensions or grace with assignments that you might miss)
Awful prof, puts nothing on his lecture slides and talks about so much during lecture, most of which isn't relevant, that it messes you up for the exam. Exam questions are terrible and often contain so much unrelated information that you're not even sure what it's asking. Class is very test heavy so study as much as possible
The way you feel about Tanner depends on the way you feel about his lecturing style, which I personally didn't appreciate. The guy clearly loves to talk, and tries to make lectures more interesting with animated tangents and examples, but they don't facilitate understanding. His quiz questions can be goofy too. Rich is the lesser evil.
If you learn best by listening to and watching the professor explain things, you'll prefer Tanner. If you prefer to just read off slides, you'll prefer Rich. He's much more of an active lecturer and does visual demonstrations to explain topics. When both professors say anything is fair game, they truly mean it, even something that was on one slide
lectures are all over the place, his quiz and exam questions are pulled out of nowhere and barely relate to lecture content at times. he'll throw in random diagrams with paragraph long questions during quizzes. BONUS quizzes add like 0.5 points (they gatekeep that til the very end), NOT accessible. refuses to answer emails, bad professor overall
If you have to take PNB do not take the enhanced version with him. His lectures are awful, and the exams/quizzes are even worse. His bonus points are worth 0.5%. They don't help your grade whatsoever. He splits the course with Scott Rich which makes it worse. They don't update HuskyCT so you don't know your actual grade unless calculating yourself.
Overall good professor and lectures are very engaging. Exams can be difficult; but just study a lot and pay attention in lecture/take good notes. Downfall is his slides are very disorganized and not accessible at all besides limited office hours. It's a challenging course, but he's passionate about what he teaches and is definitely manageable.
