really nice and answers all your questions
He tries his best to help students, but he is very unclear when he teaches
No Comments
Was very open to questions but didn't seem very confident about material taught
not a hard course but lecture material was a bit difficult to understand
very helpful teacher and tries to answer all the questions students have. makes some error on his notes but hey as long as its fixed its all good. if you have any questions u can email him and the response from him is very quick. in labs he is alsohelpful
Very clear with his teaching... but sometimes becomes overly excited with his research at the end of the course...
this was my favorite prof, he was very sweet and helpful. the course isnt that hard because its explained so well. i wish he taught more physics courses. the specialty leactures with other profs makes you appreciate him sooo much more.
he was dope...only way to put it...3 months after the end of the course he emailed me n said he found a mistake in my mark n gave me 83%...classes were pretty good too...not boring
Lecture notes not easy to understand. Too condensed, sometimes don't know what's going on. Occasional errors in notes. Very good examples in class for PRS, quite easy, helps a great deal. Sometimes lectures boring b/c he talks too much. But great prof!
Very boring. Relies completely on his boring powerpoint notes. Definitely do not recommend.
agreed he dosent' seem all that confident with his lectures. can't help but feel sorry for him when the whole lecture is talking when he's trying to teach. though it can't really be helped since the guy tends to drone on spoon feeding us information.
Great Professor! Midterms are quite fair, but the PRS are REALLY testing what you should know! Lecture notes are are in PDF format, so no need to copy in class! However, he does not tell people to be quiet when people are chatting.
great prof, very helpful. his online notes are excellent and summarize the topics pretty well. he helps you understand things better by starting off with practical applications, givng background info, and making connections to previous topics :)
nice guy, organized, good prof.
his tests were pretty reasonable and his notes were always ready for d/l the nite before (for summer course)
excellent prof, lectures notes are very clear, concise, easy to see, and availble online in three formats. gives good examples and very helpful prs questions. midterms are worth 5 % of ur mark, he scales up. prs questions count but he'll take the best 80%
i htink he's a great prof, esp for beginners. He's easy to follow, knows his stuff and always has his notes up online before the lecture. He makes physics interesting and easy.
LECTURES TOO BORING
took his class in the summer, his midterms were so easy, if you keep up, his final was so easy too, prs was easy. Just everything was easy. Great prof, willing to help. Totally recommend him
excellent prof! very approachable + helpful! he is fair and cares a lot about his students.
He is by far the most horrible teacher and not approchable. His question are not in the course syllabus. If he is your prof for physics transfer out ASAP, go to marina milner, she is much better. His tests are also unbelievbly difficult in contrast with other pporfs.
He's an awesome teacher. After taking this class with him, I went into physics. Breifly, nice guy + awesome notes + good instructor. Just do you the problems and listen to him, and you should be fine. THANKS Dr. Rieger.
Somewhat boring class, but i think that had more to do with the 8 am start time than Dr. Rieger. A helpful prof who all in all is not bad.
By far my best prof of the semester. His course questions were all based on textbook and mastering physics questions. Posts all his teaching material on his course website for easy review.
I took a summer course with him so it was a bit intense, but overall the midterm and final were fair. The labs were kind of easy for me, and the prs and mastering physics were easy. So overall a pretty decent teacher.
Rieger's voice is kind of monotone and yes, he can get a little bit boring, but I think he does the best job that he can in trying to teach his students. Inavailability of PRS in some classes wasn't his fault, and he's actually quite responsive to any questions when you are face-to-face with him. Might have been good looking when he was younger.
Considering a difficult subject, he is as good of a prof for this subject as one could have (at least at UBC). He is very kind, most approachable, and helpful, and whoever thinks otherwise (previous comments) has obviously not learnt the hard way, yet (probably a 1st year rookie). If you have to take PHYS, your best bet is with him.
Has a heavy accent... but still kinda helpful I guess...
He's a good teacher. His accent is understandable unlike most professors. He's definitely approachable for extra help! His lecture get a little confusing and he can get confused himself, but if you have Phys 100, he's definitely your best bet!
Very very decent prof. The midterm and final were extremely fair, he's very approachable, and his PRS questions were very similar to exam questions. Tutorials were a bit useless however, but those were done by the TAs, not him. His accent is very understandable as well, and he responds to emails very efficiently.
Great teacher, has the best accent, most understandable, and largest vocabulary of all the PHYS 100 teachers of 2007. He is very helpful and understanding. Definitely helped me in physics. Another plus is that he knows how to dress.
Rieger's a good prof, and the lab was so easy. However they restructured the course this year and when it came to the final, I had an A avg. but failed the final because it was so much more difficult than the course..yeah..I'll be redoing it.
Great prof ever! midterm was easy..final was ok. ended up with an A+
Very clear. Made the class interesting.
Great prof, very patient, I went back to ask to look at my final paper, and he was nice and willing to tell me what i did wrong. Plus he has a very good temper too....
Waking up early for 8 am lectures was definately worth it.
I honestly hated physics before taking this course, but Dr.Rieger made the course material interesting and easy to understand! Pre-reading is a must because lectures can be confusing if you don't understand the content at all, but if you put in a bit of effort you will get a huge reward!!
really nice prof..his German accent is understandable. The midterm was hard, and final was extremely easy. The average is 75.
Extremely helpful, kind and funny. He actually cares about his students! The class was easy, and he made it fun.
He's clear about what we need to know and what's just the extra background stuff. He really cares about the class and wants us all to do well. Physics is not my favourite subject, but he made it enjoyable.
He was sucj an amazing prof who really taught the material well, and had really good notes.
Take him for sure! He does not behave like other teachers who treat you rudely. Exams are related to the stuff he talked about in class. Physics is my worst subject but this course ends up being my highest mark so far at this school.
Harsh accent, sounds like the Governor of California so its fun to mimic him, but he is a good teacher, but it's really hard to teach such a boring course
Professor Rieger is a really nice guy. He is very clear and actually made this hard course enjoyable. His exams are fair which makes him even better. Recommend him alot!
Awesome prof, took 100 and 101 with him and aced both.
Very clear teaching style, available for extra help if you need it. Notes extremely helpful. Best physics prof ever!
He's amazing
Great Prof! Very clear & answered all my questions thoroughly! He's super nice & very approachable. I really enjoyed his class even though I'm not a fan of physics. Also, his exams are very fair! I highly recommend his class.
Very clear in explaining, does lots of demos and shows lots videos in class to add to the concepts being taught. Very approachable, helpful and the exams are v.fair. He will not trick you on exam questions. Trust me, attend every lecture and acing the midterm and even the final will be a cakewalk, for real!!! A+ Prof.
He made it very clear what was expected of us for the final exam, and wrote an extremely fair test. He is one of my favorite profs yet. If youre taking physics, TAKE HIS CLASS :)
Excellent professor. He's very clear with what he expects from us. Both the midterm and the final were on the easy side. Do all of the practice problems and you will do fine! The class average was 78%.
He is really good! Shows videos, demonstrations and is always available after class to answer you questions.I took this course in summer, though. It was much better than what I tried in the fall :)
He is really nice and really wants his students to succeed. His lectures are clear and he uses a lot of worksheets which are helpful. The exams are all open book. He's a really good prof. I'd recommend him for sure.
Very friendly professor! He does his best to make sure that everyone understands what he's teaching during lecture. He's a nice guy and always willing to listen and help if you're confused (even in a class of 200+). Highly recommend him!!
I took the course via distance learning. It was excellent. My best physics mark ever (better than high school). The course format was superb. High quality online modules were supported by quizzes. The lab component in class was great. All tests were open book and we got practice tests to do before them. He was fair, friendly and helpful.
One of the best classes I have taken due to the teachings by Professor Rieger. I took this course in the summer and it was a real enjoyable experience. With the worksheets every lecture combined with pre-readings and masteringphysics, the course becomes really easy should you complete all the tasks given.
The best prof I've had at UBC. He was genuinely interested in whether or not I was actually understanding the material. He is super helpful and generally a nice guy.
An excellent prof. who is always ready to help. He is very friendly and knows his stuff. Highly recommend him.
Excellent prof. Explains concepts clearly and concisely with relevant examples. Attending lectures definitely helps. Midterms were very easy, and final was decent. Cheat sheets allowed on all exams.
Awesome prof, try to get him if you can. Takes time to make sure you understand
He really tried to effectively convey the material to his students however he was not always that great at explaining concepts. He gave us a lot of practice questions in class but his solutions were confusing at times and he often wasn't sure if he had the right answer.
His lectures are filled with helpful information and practice questions. He also sent emails to us every week, which I liked because it kept us informed on everything that was happening. He even showed us practices questions that ended up in the tutorials so our section was ahead of the game all the time. Great prof!
He's a really great guy, eager to help out his students and will answer all your questions as well as he possibly can. He can be pretty cute and funny too. Class is pretty easy if you get the basics of classical physics
Great professor who tries to make class intriguing! I hate physics, and he made physics enjoyable! Definitely a fair teacher! Glad to have had him as a professor!
he's very patient & clear
Dr. Rieger is a very good physics prof. I hate physics and he still made it interesting for me to learn. He's great with first year students and will take the time to make sure you know whats going on.
This man is a god. Extremely helpful, and goes out of his way to help you. One of the nicest profs I've ever had. This is a guy who changed the due date on an assignment because he realized his students had a bunch of midterms that week. What a boss.
He is really nice and patient to his students. One of the best prof I have ever had.
He was always clear about what we had to learn through the live weekly lectures through zoom and through the assignments for each week. The course is mostly asynchronous, and yet his care for his students has made it feel like a synchronous one. He adjusted the course to suit our needs and was always active. Thanks again, Dr. Rieger!
Don't let these 5 star ratings fool you. Georg Rieger is a terrible professor and you will have difficulty understanding his lectures. He goes WAY too fast and can be pretty hard to understand because of his accent. On top of that, lectures will NOT prepare you for PHYS 118. Quiz averages were ~ 60%, with the one MT having a 50% average as well.
I only found this course fine and did well because I'd learned most of the content before. Lectures were very disorganized and the content was not taught well, but they were caring and tried to be helpful. I think the participation marking was very reasonable with a big portion of the marking scheme completion work. Exams didn't reflect what taught
Georg is a very approachable instructor who is willing to help students with difficult questions, but the organization of his lecture materials is not the layout that I can get used to. I feel pretty tough with this course and he does not teach you general and simple questions in class rather than doing iCliker for complicated questions.
He is the kindest prof I ve seen in UBC, absolute ez tests and flexible homework. Great experience
He seems very serious but very nice to talk to. He is patient to answer questions in lecture even though you interrupt his speaking.
nice, clear and patient
PHYS 117 wasn't a very hard course but it took me time to get along with Dr.Georg's lectures and readings. Many lectures were relatively hard and couldn't understand some of his ideas, but he was very kind and gave much of his time to answer after class. Moreover, he is very understanding and not very strict with deadlines.
Nice guy and pretty chill class! Just do the readings and homework and you should be good to go for the midterms and exams. No complaints about the teaching really but also nothing that really stands out.
Overall great PROF and have no complaints. Just be ready to do a lot of assignments at home for extra review as he goes over things at a very basic level.
Loves his silly little demos, just do the homework and tutorials and you're good for the midterm!
Did a lot of demonstrations for each topic which I found very fun! The lectures weren't too heavy either, presents the information in a clear and concise way to where you can understand the material even without reading the textbook. Overall, he is an amazing prof, hoping to take more classes with him in the future!
Best physics teacher I have ever had. I love the demonstrations he does every week and also love the way he explains topics. The course is also very easy and we cover not too much stuff. He is also very accessible outside of lectures. 10/10 Professor, would recommend
He's a nice guy, sometimes the lectures are a bit confusing but you can always ask him questions after the class. Also has some cool demos almost every day.
He is very kind and understanding. I personally found it hard to follow his explanations during lectures so I had to rely on textbooks to stay on track. Other than that the way his course was laid out was pretty straightforward.
I was so scared of physics and this guy is simply the best! He offers so many opportunities for you to earn credit throughout the term. The classes are well structured and he spend lots of time practicing how to solve exercises based on the pre reading, he cares about student's questions and always reproduces experiments in class, he's so caring
Overall Rieger was a good prof to have, nothing to complain about or adore. Also, if you are looking for an easy physics class, PHYS 131 is for you. Barely had to study at all, and tests were incredibly easy. (Literally never read the textbook for over a month while not paying attention to lectures and still kept up) Love the class, decent prof
Amazing prof! He is so kind and caring, very funny guy sometimes. Just go to his lecture and ask as many question you like during office hours! He would be really happy to answer!
He's not extremely expressive, but it's clear he respects and cares for his students. Never be afraid to ask him questions in lecture. One thing is he LOVES his little demos, especially for the water and sound units.
I did well in this class but not because of the professor. You could get away with not attending. I learnt most of course content in the small class section of this course. Georg cared about his students, made classes fun but didn't teach too well. Difficulty level of this class wasn't bad at all.
Dr. Rieger is great, I enjoyed his little class demos, and he cares for his students. Lectures are recorded; however, attendance is mandatory. Overall, great prof for a good class.
Dr. Rieger is a great prof! Very kind and available outside of class. Always eager to answer questions and re-explain concepts as needed. Would recommend!
Dr. Rieger is pretty good at explaining things, and often uses demos in class which is pretty cool
Slides were great and lectures were engaging, often does demos which is fun. Stayed after class to be available if anyone needed help. Also helps that a lot of weight is on edX which means you can redo it until you get it. The midterm was also very reasonable and I had a lot of time.
He does a lot of demos and stays after class to answer all questions. Midterm was multiple choice and a cheat sheet on which you could even write down examples was allowed. If your final grade is higher than your midterm grade it will replace the midterm grade.
He is very caring and does his best to make sure everyone understands. Lectures were on the slower side, He occasionally shows cool demos. Prepares you well for the midterm and final.
One of the best profs at UBC! Made a subject I hated so much more interesting and understandable. Lectures were at a pace easy to keep up with, and he walks through doing questions and tips for approaching them. Also does some great little demos, and is always so kind and eager to help and answer questions after class. Biggest sweetheart ever.
Never thought I would enjoy Physics this much! Dr. Rieger has made Physics the most enjoyable it has ever been, especially with his demos in-class to relate to the concepts we were learning. He is very passionate, understanding, and goes at a very digestible pace! He walks through and highlights the important conceptual Qs, very helpful for exams!
