fantastic lecturer.if you want to learn @ how peoples minds work take this class
don't take this class 1st period. he'll definitely put you to sleep
Lots of stats; should get tenure
Loved his stories.
Funny, Pretty easy, but you have to do the reading
Incredibly personable, insightful, and inspirational-taking his class is a must!
greates pro at Rutgers he makes me want to get up at 810
good class...very interesting
freud, freud, freud! he's so obsessed with outdated psychoanalysis. and he's weird--starts class with two lectures on his life story. i didnt learn anything from him, but i only read 2 of the books and attended 5 lectures, and still got an A.
Had him for personality psych...talks alot about himself but is overall interesting. Test can be tricky if you dont read
Fascinating. One of the best prof's I ever had at RU. He is unique and odd and totally interesting. I learned a lot about myself in the paper we wrote.

Absolutely wonderful prof. my favorite one here. brilliant, fascinating, and insightful
interesting personality psych prof. atypical views-focuses on psychoanalysis, says scientific approach is a movement that he dislikes. never been to lecture, getting an A (notes posted online by TA). assigns readings that appear on 2 mult choice exams.
He is ok if you like hearing bull****, The class is easy as hell, just come the day before class and you get 44 out of 51 questions on the test. Personally I want to be honest and I'll rate him fair but if you like real psychology don't take this class.
George is a great teacher and one of the few people who understand TRUE psych.
This class was extremly easy and I only did half of the reading for the first exam and none for the second and I still got an A basically if you do the work and show up for the reviews there is no reason you cannot get an A
Even a monkey can ace one of Atwood's exams -George Atwood
He is a wonderful professor. He is a nice guy who truly cares about his students. His passion for psychology is evident. If you have a chance, take him!
He's not only the easiest teacher but his teaching method is also very interesting and fun. You do actually learn stuff in his class. And best of all his exams are really easy.
great teacher, and lectures that made me want to get up at 8 in the morning
No Comments
Definitely attend the lectures. This class would make you wanna get up at 8 in the morning. Though many say it isn't necessary to do the reading to do well on the class, the readings are really worth the time. This class is something to look forward to.

if you want a break from the scientistic version of psychology that dominates the field today, do yourself a favor and take a class with this true genius. he's humble, funny, and tells a great story. there isn't a better professor at rutgers.
funny, interesting, experienced as an actual pscyhologist for over 20 years. Exams based on his own encounters with patients. Wont need a text book that's dull and boring. Didnt even need the books he told us to get.
The best teacher I've ever had!!! You always leave wanting more. He's so interesting and down to earth. TAKE HIM!!!
Easy guy whos very approachable after class. Sometimes hes even funny in lectures. Easy exams, mostly common sense questions
Cares a lot about the students and willing to go the extra mile to help. Exams on both lecture and books, but pretty easy. Do really well on the extra credit and you're definitely going to get an A. not really helpful for GRE, but great class.
He is a great professor.Really nice & flexible if you miss an exam or anything.I didn't even do my readings and got a b+ on the first exam. But I suggest you read.Attend his lectures, they are interesting most of the times, and it is worth waking up for.
He's an entertaining lecturer and teaches a type of pyschology totally diffrent from mainstream psych. If you're tierd with lab experiments dealing with mice and dogs take his class.
Funny and definately a good lecturer. The TA for this class was the biggest help, but she's gone. Atwood is an easy A but that's b/c he teaches effectively and explains everything very well.
Wonderful teacher and beautiful person. I looked forward to his class and even hated missing it! I learned an unbelievable amount and I will never forget the knowledge that I accummulated in his class. It has been an enriching experience.
One of the best lecturers. He is very clear and thorough. Lectures are interesting and never too long. Exams are pretty easy. However, this is a very demanding class: almost 1500 pages of reading. Also, he assigns a short paper.
Best teacher I ever had!
had him for both abnormal and personality psych -- lots of reading -- really good professor -- one of the best i've had here @ Rutgers! :o]
I don't understand what all this hype about Atwood is all about. He is NOT interesting at all. In fact, he bores me and puts me to sleep all the time. Plus, he talks too much about himself. I got an A, but hated the class. Too much reading for class!
I don't see what the hype is either. I hardly learned anything in his class! Whoever says that the tests are easy or that you don't have to do the reading is plain wrong. The tests are very difficult, the reading is overwhelming.
You don't really learn anything about "personality" psychology itself, but this class proves to be kinda interesting anyway. Most of the reading is dreadful, but most of the questions of the exams come from the lectures anyway. GO TO LECTURE!!
Personality psych is not in the least bit easy. There is alot of reading, not easy Unless you actually like reading about FREUD. 1500 pages of reading. Lectures are ok, they arent even on the exams. did all the reading went to class got a B
He's a nice guy, but he assigns ALOT of reading, and you need to do all of it to do well on his exams. His exams aren't as easy as everyone says they are, he must have changed them from the previous semesters..
Well the class has a lot of reading way too much Freud that wasn't really on the exam. Lectures are big part of exams. Talks too much about himself but it was a good class, interesting topics. Have to go to lecture to do good on exams.
I def agree with the last few reviews. he was way overrated and his readings are atrocious. I got an A in the class but all the same it was far from easy. GO TO LECTURE!!
AWESOME!!
one of the best professors @ rutgers. i wish i had him for all of my classes. a good chunck of this class pertains to freud & jung (so if you like them you will love this class). you can't get bored in his class!
I don't care what these ppl r saying...Atwood is not a good professor. I didn't learn anything, especially since he doesn't teach from a text book. He puts u to sleep from the time u sit down to the end of class. Take this class at ur own risk.
I took his class and still passed it when i was only there for the first day, last day and all the days we had exams. I read the two novels from the class and still passed it. he was a good teacher in my books.
Had him in 1977 for intro psych and for abnormal in 1980. He was the best psych prof at the school back then. He was easy to understand and if you took any of the classes he taught you were garanteed to learn alot. He wrote the book "Faces in a Clou
The most inspiring professor i've had. So down to earth and real. He's the savior of the psych dept. at Rutgers. One of the few professors who passionately challenges this insane field, by revealing touching anecdotes and personal struggles in the field.
Great Teacher! Tells crazy stories that relate to the subject matter...the books assigned are really interesting...easy grader...plus gives an extra credit paper if you need it...hardest part was getting up for such an early class but its worth it
The most fantastic prof I ever had. Very exciting and deep.
At the very least, he's an inspiring individual and not as dry as many other psych. professors.
AWESOME CLASS! He keeps you interested with anecdotes from his real cases of insane patients. If you're really into psych take this class. There are a few books to read but they are SO interesting!
Amazing lecturer, easy exams as long as you skim the reading and go to class. Some of the reading is really boring however. I rather kill myself than read Freud's Interpretation of dreams again, which is 600 pages of **** and he makes you read it. Lectures are clear and he's freakishly nice
He is awsome!! if you can handle waking up early& taking a friday class i highly recommend. you will not want to miss any lectures!! there is a lot of reading involved but most of it is interesting. Great guy he has learned so much and has a lot to offer. a must take!!
Very interesting teacher;readings are heavy, but quick & interesting. He added a paper this semester:in order to get an A,u must write a 8 pg paper. If u only come to class and pay attention-easy B+.Doesn't answer questions well, but info from class should be self explanatory.GO OVER THE REVIEW SHEETS
Atwood is a good guy, and the lectures really are interesting. If you do the reading the class is a guaranteed A(with the optional paper) because the exams test basic stuff from reading. I didn't do the reading and still managed a B because the final is a joke. I'd take him again.
Impossible not 2 like him! Lectures are interesting. Exams are easy if you've gone 2 class & have done the reading.
great teacher with interesting stories. exams are easy, all you have to do is attend class. his great stories make it extremely easy to learn the course concepts
Easy class, midterm and final are 50 question multiple choice. easy, but you have to do some of the reading, which isn't horrible. his lectures are pretty interesting, but the notes were online from the TA anyway. only teaches from one point of view. this semester, we had to do that paper for an A
EASY EXAMS answers are very obvious. I only studied 1day for the final. Go to class. Read the books. Listen to his stories they're fairly interesting. Very repetitive which is good. Fell asleep very little during his lectures.
I didn't go to many of his lectures - TOO EARLY :) However, the lectures I DID go to were always interesting. My one complaint is that he tended to talk about really disturbing topics. His lectures on death and the afterlife still stayed with me 2 years later. Easy grader.
VERY easy. Didn't go to class and just bought first class notes = got the A
the best teacher at rutgers by far!!!! interesting reading that you would not hesitate to read on your own! easy exams if yo read and lectures that are so good youll be mad if you miss them!
He is THE MAN! I love his class b.c he doesnt believe in text books!! There is alot of reading and most of it is interesting except dream interpretation by Frued everything else is ok. he gives easy exams and he gives a review sheet with questions that r goin2 be on da exam. EASY CLASS, TAKE IT!!!!
Had to of been one of the most amazing professors I've had so far. Its worth waking up early in the morning, he's got amazing stories, and you learn so much...
Atwood is AMAZING! He says the funniest things, it's the only class I would actually recommend taking at 8:10. I really wish more professors were like him! He is truly interested in the material he is teaching, and doesn't like all the traditional textbook stuff. Take this class!
I wish he was my grandfather!! Such a cool guy
Ok nice guy or not, this class is not an easy A. I'd rather read 2 chaps in text book than the 5 600 paged novels he makes us read. And they are boring. And you have to know them inside out to get an A. or else u'd end up with a B. Nice guy, but class is not THAT interesting. I've had better. Atwood is overrated.
By far, Atwood is one of the best professors at Rutgers. Although his classes are early in the morning, they are well worth going to, even if you pass out for a few minutes. Grab a cup of coffee, stare at the hot female psych majors in the class, and listen to Atwood. He does not email you back, though. Good man in the end!!!!!!!!!
Def. worth getting up early for!! very interesting and knowledgable...lots of reading but the books he assigns are really interesting, especially if you are going into the field of psychology. Class is easy, not many people get As (like me) but easy B if you show up...
Everyone should take this class! The grade is based on a midterm, final and a paper. the papaer is just you analilyzing yourself so you automatically get an A on it as long as you take it seriously! Notes are also posted online so if you have trouble getting up that early no problem, but its actually fun to go there and listen to the lectures.
Class early as hell, but not a prob for this interesting fun class. You go in, take notes for few min. then rest of class is an awesome story and very hard to sleep through. Lots of reading though, many books to read :( Anyway IMP. STUFF! Mid-term=Easy A, Paper=Easy A, didnt have to take the final, b/c best 2/3 grades!DEF. TAKE HIM!
TAKE THIS CLASS! YOU WON'T BE SORRY!
class was really early but worth going to. he is such a nice guy...prob the nicest in the university. the readings are long but u just have to skim through them and get the important facts and study from the notes he writes on the board. awesome awesome guy though. an A is definitely attainable so take him!
Tests can be confusing, but he is a great guy and very open to questions.
I took this class TF1...the only reason I would get up for an 8am class was this guy. His stories were interesting and his review sheets were dead on to the exam. He brings Psych to life with his real life case stories and deep interest in the field. Two thumbs up.
He's okay, but kind of overrated. And he's biased, he only really teaches about the approaches to Personality Psych that he ascribes to, so I don't feel like I got a very broad or a very balanced view on the topic. He's funny though, and he has some interesting stories. He's a cool guy, but I hear he's better for Abnormal Psych.
what everyone else said -- this guy is amazing: passionate, compelling, entertaining. Take this class. :o)

he is a very easy professor. a secret few people know is that he gives no graid lower than a B on his term paper he takes a very psycho analytic prospective on psychology, so if your use to cognitive wich is the perspective almost every other rutgers professor takes he seems very strange and narrow minded. but its just because his teaching is so unconventional
Easy stuff. Take a morning class and you're bound to pass out.
Very Cool Professor.
I had Dr. Atwood for both Personality and Abnormal Psychology. Both of these classes were the most interesting psychology classes I have taken at Rutgers. He teaches a model so different then conventional courses that his teachings really makes you second guess the psychology that is being practiced in the 20th century and beyond. If you are in psychology to learn about how drugs can alter your mood this is not the course for you his courses teach the human being behind the disorder.
rarely went to class but if you do the review sheet and get all the answers to that...mad easy. class is interesting though, just early...george is awesome
I LOVE this man...if he were 40 years younger id marry him, the man is halarious. He's intellegient, energetic, cute, and funny! Def take any Atwood class!
Who cares if he is old, I'd marry him now if he wasn't taken. A genius and a hottie in need of some lovin.
A nice guy who needs a bad girl. ;)
He is phenomenal. The only true psychology professor here at RU. Gives elaborate stories that bring what you read to life. Very experienced and wise. Take anything he teaches. He wears Diesels! He rocks!
the best psy. professor ever!!
The most enlightening teacher here at Rutgers is so against behaviorism he made it his career to educate students about his views. I loved all his classes, and the tests werew easy! His lectures are very helpful and filled with important things you need for the exam.
I LOVEEEE G. ATWOOD! This man is amazing. Interesting, funny, weird, with great lectures. Only negative aspect is early TF morning classes but they're totally worth it! You learn so much from this man who devotes himself to his patients. I esp. recommend Abnormal - also has you read very interesting and great books! (no textbooks) Take him!
Go get your morning coffee, wake the f*** up, and go to his class. If you avoid his 8:10 classes just cause your lazy a** doesn't wanna get up you'll miss out on the one chance to listen to this brilliant man talk. Seriously the greatest psychology teacher at Rutgers, James making a close second. And he's hot in that phenomenological sorta way ;)
the female students need to unite and come together to give him a strip show because he is so hot
George is probably the best professor I've ever had. I really learned the material because he made me have interest in it. No textbooks..two exams..great readings..fun lectures. The early TF lectures are definately worth getting up for. Amazing stories. Teaches from experience! I doubt if there is anyone who would tell you not to take him
Atwood is my role model in life!!! He is absolutely the BEST professor at Rutgers! If he taught every single psych class I would take them all!! I <3 Atwood!!!
Atwood is a professor that will allow you to open your mind to everything. His stories are so eventful that you will be on the edge of your seat the entire 80 mins. His intellectual thinking will sweep anyone off their feet and truly make them grateful to take his class~that's why he is hot.
Atwood is the best psych prof, if not the best prof, at Rutgers. I had him TF 8:10, and I'd actually feel bad the few times I missed, because his lectures are so interesting. Go to class (which is actually fun) and read the books (which are also some of the neatest things you'll ever read) and it's an easy A.
George is without a doubt the best professor of any class at Rutgers. The class is an 80 min story time twice a week! Although there is a fair amount of reading involved, the material is very thought provoking..I <3 George too!
GREATEST TEACHER EVER! HE EVEN HAS A NEW THING NOW WHERE U CAN LISTEN TO THE LECTURES ONLINE IN CASE U MISS! IVE NEVER BEEN SO EXCITED TO GET TO AN 8:10! IVE LEARNED SO MUCH! THE EXAMS ARE CLEAR, YOU JUST NEED TO STUDY AND YOU WILL BE FINE! TAKE THIS CLASS! YOU WONT REGRET IT! AND NO HES NOT GAY!! HE HAS A WIFE N KID HES JUST A LITTLE ON THE FEM SI
Only psych class so far that i recieved a B+, Every lecture is interesting, Mid term and Final, very easy, no text but novels, all you to do is skim, review sheets and a paper.
It was great being in Prof atwood's class. there are no trick questions on exams, audio lectures available on the web although you wouldnt want to miss any of his lectures cuz theyre so engaging. I got an A in this class and i learnt a lot, especially about phenomenology =) George Atwood for President!!!
Atwood is such a great professor. The material was so interesting. I read the books, watched the films, went to lectures. I really learned a lot and the class was great. I already learned about the physio of abnormal in my physio psych class so this class was refreshing, taking the phenomenological viewpoint. It was great. Atwood should be the Pres
Professor Atwood is my favorite professor in Rutgers by far. Hei is interesting and his lectures are great. Put it this way, his notes and lectures (the actual sounds) are online and his class is at 8:10 in the morning, yet a lot of students still come to class on a daily basis. You have to take his class!
All my personalities wanna marry him! Make us WHOLE georgey
alot of these reviews are for abnormal, but Atwood is awesome for personality psych. as well. This curriculum was really interesting and different, and the final project was easy and soo interesting, and not another multiple choice test.deff. a great class and a great teacher, take it with him.
His abnormal class was so interesting. It was first period but believe me he makes you want to go to class. He tells great stories and as long as you do the readings you will do great in the class. Atwood is so good that I decided to take his Personality class. I recommend him.....take his class you will not regret it.
Atwood is by far the greatest prof I've had at Rutgers. I've had some pretty horrible profs at this university. especially in the psych dept. He was so refreshing. TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES you will have a rewarding experience. You will find yourself actually wanting to go to class!
This man is GOD.
he's extremely funny and interesting; even though he only teaches classes mad early in the morning, they're definitely worth going to!! exams are pretty easy.
ATWOOD IS THE MAN
Easy class since everything is online. Really wants everyone to get an A. Only caution is that there are a lot of readings needed for the exam. Still I would recommend this class to everyone! Atwood is the man!
Class is a little boring, but he looks good for a grandfather, and that kept me interested. His stories are a little out there, but back in the day, things were a little crazy.
After taking both of Atwood's classees, you could call me a true Atwoodian. His classes are so interesting, the readings are awesome (even though there are a lot), and exams are not tough by any means. It is because of this guy that I have a deep love for psychology. I reccommend this class to everyone.
Great guy!!
I took this class first semester and it was the best introduction to Rutgers ever. This professor is AMAZING and I already can tell you his is a rarity. The class waseasy and the lectures are fascinating. As long as you do the readings you can get an A on the exams. Even after the class ended he let me do extra credit to get an A from a B +.
this rating applies to personality psych as well: atwood is a genius and a real human being. many who take his class don't even know how important he is in the history of psychology because he is so modest and friendly. you can get a good grade in his course if you want, but that's not the reason to take it. take it to be fascinated.
Professor Atwood is the best professor ever. The most interesting lectures you will ever hear. He is also the niest guy in the world. There is absolutly nothing negative I could possibly say about the best professor in Rutgers and possibly the world.
He makes going to an 8:10 class worth it, which says a lot. It might seem like he gives a lot of readings, but they are way more interesting than difficult. And he does a lot to help students do well, like posting recordings of the lectures, lecture notes, and giving very straightforward exam reviews. He's the best professor I've had.
this is one of the funniest characters @ RU. he makes you want to go to an 8:10 lecture. but if you miss it he not only posts the written notes online HE ALSO posts he taped lectures on line!!! and gives you a study guide!!!! only down fall is all the reading, but i would defintely recommend his class to psych majors & non majors! he is great!
He's my favorite professor thus far. George Atwood is real. He teaches the REAL stuff. Although the topics he talks about can be quite disturbing, he makes you think and this is what makes him so great. He's an amazing person with an amazing story to tell to all aspiring psychologists/psychiatrists or to anyone whatsoever. I highly recommend.
Atwood is the BEST!!! He makes class so interesting and worth going to!!! Plus he makes class so easy!!! As long as you do the reading (which are small books instead of a text book) you will do fine!!! And he curves BIG time.. I got a 73 for the midterm but after his curve I ended up with a B!!! I would take any class with this guy!!!
Abnormal class definitely off the beaten track. Don't take if you are looking to prepare for the GRE. Main themes are psychosis and multiple personality, from a perspective emphasizing personal meaning, NOT the medical perspective. Criticism of the medical model is a strong theme. His style is entertaining, exams are cake. A real privilege.
Having a teacher like Atwood made going to Rutgers worth it. There is no wall between him and the students, which is a real rarity. From his life experiences and the books he shows that learing about ourself is the most important education in life. It goes beyond the classroom doors. Any work in this class, which is barely anything, is worth it.
Easy class- did all the textbook readings the day before the exam, which is the best thing to do to keep the info fresh in mind, and got an A...very interesting, though not as "amazing" as he's hyped up to be by all of these posters. Just a regulat guy with cool but hard-to-believe stories. If you don't mind reading stupid books, take the class.
Atwood has some great stories, and this class is really interesting, even the books. The exams are pretty easy and he posts lectures online. I liked the class, but I wished he had taught us some mainstream stuff, to explain his opposition and expose us to it. I'd rather have left 340 to a more conventional prof. wish he taught a course on therapy.
Goto his lectures and enjoy
was a clear and fairly easy teacher- if read books and took notes in class. tests were very straight forward and true to his classes. felt lectures were often borings and stories told, often hard to believe. books assigned were laborious and boring. But if you dont mind a teacher with a clear objective-phenom. v.p. you should def take class
This guy's stories were totally believable because when you saw what an open-minded, kind, and accepting person he was, then you knew that it was all for real. You'll never meet a person in or out of the classroom like this guy. As corny as it sounds, your life will be changed.
insanely good professor. no textbooks required, just some books/texts that were enjoyable to read. go to lecture and listen to his stories, he is a fantastic storyteller and will no doubt keep you entertained. his teaching style is fantastic - and more professors should follow in george's footsteps!
He IS as great as everyone says. Classes are early but they are worth going to. A great lecturer and story teller + has a great insight into his work. There's a lot of reading but they are all good books. I was worried bc I didn't do that well on the midterm, but his curve is wonderful + w/ an e.c. paper, I still got a A. I loved him and the class.
great prof!! Im not a psych maj/minor but i LOVED his abnorm course, even at 8:10, interesting class, I learned soo much, and even got an A which is rare for me (just study, pay attention, read some)
George Atwood is a brilliant, charasmatic and extremely kind individual. I am not a morning person, but I woke up for every single one of his riveting 8:10am classes. Everything that comes out of his mouth is just incredible and so insightful. Not a difficult class because he makes it so interesting. Take him now.
AMAZING CLASS, even greater professor. Everyone MUUSSTT take this class. Easy tests (MC/T.F)with a study guide that answers every question on the test. The most interesting stuff you will learn about in your college life from the most experienced guy in this university. Great sense of humor + brilliance = personality psych w. Atwood!
You ROCK!
I wasn't that interested in the mentally ill until I heard his stories and encounters with some of the most intelligent and sophisticated patients. His class is early but it's liking waking up and listening to a movie, he does his own impressions, all that's missing is the popcorn. Very easy to memorize since he acts out what he says.. :)
hi is an amazing professor. I also had him for abormal and he is very helpful and makes the class interesting...you actually learn in his class..jus have to go to his lectures which aren't boring at all so its an easy class.
Atwood is great! His lectures are always very interesting. He also posts audio lectures up online in case u cant make it 2 class. The exams are fair. The TAs did an amazing job with the reviews!I ended up getting A's on both the midterm and the final, without going to class. There was also a 5 page paper due at the end of the semester. Not hard though.
Nice guy and everything. however the class is basically abt personalities of other psychologists. well didn't help me anyway. i found class bpring. didn't gain anything.
He's a very nice and intelligent guy. But I didn't enjoy the class very much. It really will not help you if you do decide to go to graduate school. But overall a great guy. He definitely is a genius in his field. You do learn more about the psychologists' lives and less about modern personality theory (which is more important). Take Ogilvie!
the best class ive had so far. his lectures are pretty interesting and he posts audio lectures on his website. his TAs are amazing and go to review sessions, they definitely will help you. i recommend doing the readings so you are fully prepared for the reviews to know what theyre talking about. take atwood, hes a great guy!
He's adorable...I enjoy listening to his stories =)His teaching style is unique...which is awesome =)

Awesome Professor...read the books...it'll change your life...take the class!
Easist class ever. Great professor. wish I could take another class with him
He posts the audio lectures online and says don't bother showing up to class, he knows the classes are early! good man! I got an A and proudly say I did not read anything or do anything for it. But, our TA had a review session when she gave us the answers, don't bet on that though. I would have failed without her. :) atwood is cute!
Atwood is the BEST PROFESSOR!!! they should clone him and have them all teach psychology classes!!!! He was such an easy A, as much as i would want to have read books, did not read them fully!!! Love Atwood...I Want to marry him!!! lol ENJOY CLASS!!!!
Atwood needs to teach more classes. I finished personality and abnormal and I just want more. Atwood is amazing!!! Take him!!!
Amzing.Lecture are online (audio file though they dont always match up. gives study guides week before exam so you know what to focus on.has 4 forms of grading 3 exams and optional paper therefore if your sure to rock exams forget the paper or the paper could help you grade.awesome when u can drop your lowest grade. stories are honesty intriguing.
Really nice guy! Lectures are very interesting (even though very early in the morning). If you don't want to go to class you don't have to. Make sure and read the books because that's where the exam questions mostly come from
awesome professor...created a great interest in the topic and really knew what he was talking about and made it interesting to go to lecture. Even though not mandatory because the lectures are online his lectures are awesome anyway
seriously this man has 32 pgs of probably great comments if you DONT take him before graduating you be worst off. Hes amazing in every way I love george [period] great class great material good exams optional paper drops 1 of 4 grades (if u do paper) AMAZINGG
Atwood is easy. you just have to remember to think only through his point of view when answering questions on exams. class was def way too early. the books in the beginning are boring but if you don't read rose garden and unchained memories, you are missing out big time.
I took both his courses. Abnormal had amazing stories and I never wanted to miss lecture. Personality had a thought provoking paper on yourself. Tests are really easy and the readings are interesting. He even has a highly used forum on sakai that makes it easy to find lectures, extra material and interact with a lecture sized class easier.
This class is alot of reading, class is not necessary if you are not a morning person, just read all the books. exams are short, but pretty easy, just remember to think like he thinks and it is an easy a...take this class
ok ppl think about this for a second, if you haven't noticed yet Atwood's class is like the first to be closed when scheduling starts and it stays close plus the man has millions of great comments below and probably above. He is simply the best of the best. It is 3exams & 1paper,drops the lowest. I didn't take the first exam but got my A & loved it
The lectures were always interesting. The class is easy if you attend it and pay attention and take notes. The tests are pretty hard. Just study as much as u can. He gives extra credit so just make sure u participate on sakai and u should be fine. Overall a great class and u will learn a great deal.
The material is AMAZING and enlightening. He's a phenom! If you want to do anything clinical, take this class and see how it's done right, humanely, and with the best results.
This class sucks!!dn't its cool the way abnoraml psy was..trust me it's NOT!atwood just blabs on about his life and has only few intersting stories...and the books are the worst things i'ver ever ahd to read..extremely hard to understand!!
Without a doubt, he is one of the most intelligent, lovely men I have ever had the priviledge of having as a teacher. However, that brilliance is daunting. The material is tough, there's alot of reading involved, and he never goes over any of it. I do love his lectures because he is so colorful and interesting, but it is way more than I expected
Haven't taken the exam yet but it seems to cover much material from the readings. The main dislike about this class is how subjective and philosophical it is. Atwood really denounces objective psychology (i.e. quantitative methods, physiological psychology, behaviorism). I find it incredibly irksome, but if you're okay with that then take the class
first of all, everyone has to stop putting Atwood up on a pedastal. There is absolutely nothing great about him the whole class is subjective and learn nothing. Secondly, if you're taking more than 15 credits, don't take his class, there is just too much reading(when i say too much i mean TOOOOOO much). He sucks. Not as easy as everyone says.
He no longer holds reviews and drops the lowest exam grade which was his policy in the past, which explains his easyness in the past. He sucks. No longer an easy A. AVOID! Atwood is absolute garbage.
Abnormal is much better than personality. You don't have to go to class since he posts the lectures online and there is a lot of reading, but he's only looking for main ideas. I didn't even read one of the books and got an A. I would recommend abn, but I dunno about per, especially since you can only use one for major requirements.
Don't get me wrong, Atwood is a nice guy and all but Personality Psych was absolutely BLAH. First of all, Personality with Atwood is not Abnormal with Atwood. The exams are extremely difficult, especially the final. Everyone walked out felling like they just got hit by a car. The self analysis paper is ok. Overall...Abnormal maybe, Personality, nah
This class sucks. There I said it. Its boring, and the tests are hard (unless you become atwood's mind) His lectures are all over the place, he doesnt like any questions or discussion. The worst part of all is the atwood "following" that wants to be a bunch of little atwoods. Just cause he used to teach a good class doesn't mean its good anymor
Atwood is not what he used to be. Personality psych is NOT abnormal psych. The tests are difficult. You dont need to go to class since he posts the notes online, but tests require a lot of studying to do well. He gives a paper that doesnt count. Overall, its ok if your willing to study an uncessary amount in order to not really learn anything.
This class was NOT as easy as I thought it would be. There is a lot of required reading and the final waa pretty confusing.. If you go to class and do his review guides you will end up with at least a B.. =)
This class was so easy. You don't have to read, as long as you study the study guide posted on sakai. I didn't read a thing and got an A. Plus .. Atwood is an amazing man.
ok, so listen to this post, not any others. both classes SO easy. abnormal is much more interesting than personality. but personality i went to 4 lectures, 3 of which were exams and still got a 97. just read the required books, or memorize the study guides if they are posted. abnormal is much more interesting, but both are good classes, just early
I love this man! Is he married? This was the most interesting class ever and well worth getting up at the crack of dawn.
This professor was the best I've had in my four years at Rutgers. Not only were his classes interesting, but extremely insightful. Although the class was early and I sleep in way too much, I couldn't help getting up and hearing what this guy had to say. He teaches from experiences and generally wants you to understand psychology. Take this class
I don't know about personality, but abnormal is amazing. Both sections he teaches are early, and yet the room is always packed. Doesn't mind if you skip class, but no one wants to. Puts all his lectures online. Exams are so easy, don't have to read the books, but they're really interesting! If u get into 8:10, u can go at 9:50 - he doesn't care.
Probably the best professor you will ever have at RU - simple as that
ATWOOD IS AWESOME SIMPLE AS THAT!!! he teached you things that you want to know about psych!! his exams are relatively easy with the help of the study guide!!
Anyone who's ever said Atwood was terrible, must obviously have a non-phenomological view on life! This professor is the best I've ever had, and deserves some kind of reward. He is EXTREMELY dedicated and just amazing. Anytime you see Atwood as the professor, register IMMEDIATELY.
He was great. Told all sorts of stories from his clinical days, was hilarious and interesting, and the readings were really enjoyable. It's an easy and fun little class.
I disagree with the rest of these ratings. HE wasnt a hard teacher but i wouldnt say he was a good teacher. HE was entertaining but he has very few cases which he talks about over and over again. He asserts his own view as the only one that holds water- will not accept any other ideas about psych its only phenomenology. You'll get an A but...eh
atwood is extremely easy. you can pass this class without even showing up, but you will want to anyway. his lectures are entertaining. hes a normal guy who understands students. three tests, optional paper. sense of humor and good work ethic. very human.
love him! hes such a funny prof. and his stories are great, def interesting to listen to. dont really have to go to class, ppl post up study guides before exams, read the books tho theyre good! his tests arent hard as long as u read the notes!
Atwoods the man. Most lectures he tells about his stories but they are key to the exams. Exams are MC and are pretty straight forward and usually the answer is the most obvious one. The only downside was that it was at 8:40AM and you need to sit in the front to see his 'writing.' Pulled off an A. 3 Exams, no final, extra credit opportunities.
He is by far, one of the most amazing people I have ever met. Awesome professor! He changed my whole view on psychology! He is a great person. TAKE HIS CLASSES!! You should get a "phenomenological" experience for yourself.
OK, he's NOT exactly the "deity" that most folks on here say he is. While he is definitely easy, he was a little too "philosophical" for my tastes, and I felt as though I was in a rather old-fashioned type of psychology class. I didn't learn as much about various psychological disorders as I would have liked. Overall, he's okay, but not the best.
While he is an articulate and perhaps motivating professor, I believe his perspective on his approach to this field is quite narrow. If his philosophical remedy was extrapolated and applied universally, there would be an efficiency quandary.
Have to say I wasn't a fan of his unique style. Say goodbye to a textbook and powerpoints.Instead you have 6 novels to read, and every lecture is Atwood telling stories of real life patients. Makes studying alittle inconvenient.I personally would of preferred a simple textbook so I could have something to refer to for terms and ideas. Great guy
Awesome teacher. He is cool and his stories are interesting. Class is early but attendence is not mandatory. Very easy exams, posts study guides, and is very helpful. His exams are extremely simple and he still curves. I've heard his tougher for personality, but for abnormal this class is a guarenteed A
He's ok....definately overrated. A lot of reading. He picks his own TA's which are more of an annoyance than they are helpful. Didnt really learn much about mental disorders, he only focused on schizophrenia...I wish I would have taken it with someone else.
Personally this class was horrible....there are 6 NOVELS to read per exam which is UNREASONABLE for busy college students and if u don't complete them you can't do well. Exam are extremely hard and he never goes over the stories and what u have to study is so subjective since it's based on his patience and not real life facts from a textbook.
Simply amazing professor!!! He is a brilliant teachers and he keeps you entertained while lecturing so you wont doze off and you'll remember the material better. The key to success is having a good TA but going to class works well too.
george makes class interesting. the whole downside was all the reading we had to do for exams and that there is only a midterm and a final. i wish he would have just done powerpoints and a textbook, but he prefers to right on the chalkboard and assign numerous books.
gr8 prof! actualyl interested in teaching students sth unlike alot of the professors @ ru who only care about the exams. 1 written paper, 1 midterm & final, mcq, not comprehensive. att not mand. reviews posted on sakai + studyblue KEY. v helpful TAs. never went to class, studied night before exams & got a B+. dont buy books, study from review notes
In retrospect, he was an interesting guy who favored the alternative, subjective world of psychology. You could tell that he was a compassionate human being that catered to the scared, vulnerable people who often feel dejected by society. He's a man of the fringe, and in that he appeals to those of us who don't quite fit in the box.
Atwood is hard? Are you kidding? I didn't go to all the lectures, didn't listen to the audio lectures or read the notes from the classes I missed, I slept when I did go..and still received an A getting only 1 question wrong on the final..If you think he's hard then you're a dolt.
simply the best psych prof. at RU! talks more about subjective psych, and i love his stories, wish i could take him again, his passion makes the class so much more interesting, he's great
Not a good class,if you prefer psych classes where you can read a textbook which is where exam questions come from THIS IS NOT THE CLASS. questions&answers are subjective, lectures are stories and novels are textbooks. There is no way to study and if you missed class dont bother copying notes cause you wont understand them. Wouldnt take this again!
Took Atwood for Abnormal Psychology. This was definitely the most eccentric class I have ever taken in my life. Atwood is a great guy and makes his lectures very interesting as he talks about his former patients. There's no textbook, but there are 5 250pg books you must read throughout the semester. Exams are mostly from lectures. Not hard to get A
I wouldn't take him again. This guy did not amaze me like he does to some people. I just didn't like his teaching style (which is why people think hes great). Very outgoing, crazy, curses a lot, opinionated. If that's what you like, take him.
He's hot.
great professor. deserves mucho chile peppers!
great professor with a great perspective on psychology that needs to be articulated more frequently in academia. very helpful and funny guy. lectures are interesting. classes are not mandatory, notes get posted online. Just need to make sure you understand the big themes of the class and do most of the reading
I'd recommend this class to anyone. Atwood offers an alternate perspective that can really open your mind. You don't have to agree with what he says, but you should understand his point of view; it'll make you a more well-rounded person.
worst prof i have ever had. should not be allowed to teach. he is inappropriate, unstable, and utterly full of it. don't take this class expecting to learn anything, except maybe an overly detailed history of his personal life. total waste of time.
Interesting, dont have to go to class, easy A what more could you ask for. Take him! My favorite class last semester :)
reason i became a psych major. best class ive taken at RU! other professors could learn a thing or two from atwood.
Easily one of the best profs you could get. His views are a bit different, but if you open your mind to them, you'll realize they're more valid than most any other views you'll ever hear. It's not hard to get an A, but you don't take a class like this for the grade; you take it for the way it'll change the way you see things. Strongly recommend.
Whoever said this man was the greatest professor is most certainly wrong. He is very dry and boring, and way too firm on his views, definitely not liberal. He put me to sleep in my 8 AM class.
If this man did have an illustrious career at Rutgers it has degenerated into class lectures filled with profanities and incoherent ramblings. There is not a single thing you can hope to learn in this class as any attempt to teach you anything is shoved aside to discuss celebrity gossip, his disdain for other professors,& alleged illustrious past
The worst professor you could ever take. A complete waste of time. Do not take this class if you can help it. Only benefit of taking this class is there is no attendance policy. Don't worry, you won't miss out on learning anything.
I have to agree with the past few reviwers. I took him for a summer course based off the course description and all the glowing reviews on this site. Unfortunately, I did not have anywhere near the positive experience so many people claim they had. His lectures were awful & the test questions seemed to come out of nowhere. The man should retire
Okay, a lot of you are just hating. Atwood is seriously one of the best professors that Rutgers has to offer. I took this course over the summer, but if I could take it in the fall, I would, because there is so much material. But it's so interesting!!! BEST PROF EVER.
Dr. Atwood is without a doubt the best pysch professor teaching at Rutgers (the rest are of the depressing and disappointing cog-sci perspective).
Atwood is an interesting character...you definitely have to go into this class with an open mind. He seems a little crazy sometimes during lectures but so what, it makes things interesting (way better than being dryly lectured to...) there is a ton of reading but he does warn you to start early. Exams are pretty easy too
A great professor who understands the nonfactual world of psychology...you may not see the world of psychology from his perspective and if not at all you can drop it...but DEFINITELY, take a chance with this professor. He highly influenced my life.
Exams are pretty easy if you take notes, read the books he assigns and pay attention to the study guide. His lectures are interesting and are filled with stories. Definitely a good choice, just don't opt for the 8am class (too early)
Had him for fall 2010. got an A. tells a lot of stories. go to class for notes, attendance not mandatory. 2 exams (midterm 50q,final 40q)self-analysis paper 10pts. total 100. good professor.the exams are half the reading which are books not text books,& half lecture notes. he gives studyguides for both exams. & extra credit options are given.
this class is so easy. went to literally 3 lectures, never opened the books, studied the night before the exam, and i got a B.
He is intelligent and insightful but most students exalt him all because they can memorize a study sheet a day before an exam barely learning anything. I got a C on the first exam despite having a natural aptitude for psychology, perception, math, and critical thinking since I have a LD with verbal skills. I am not great with multiple-choice exams.
I took Abnormal with him in 1992. He is the best PSY prof at RU. Unless you are more comfortable in a lab, take his course and internalize the process. He looks through the subject, not at it. This is the creative side of PSY that makes the science real and interesting. Everything else is just numbers and measurements.
Took him for personality psychology. Just one thing WORST PROF. AT RUTGERS!!! I learned not one thing about personality. Ohh yeah he lost my final too. I'm still waiting for a grade. So disorganized. His teaching methods were horrible. I would not recommend him.
worst professor. don't take him. not easy and boring.
Class was useless. i probably went three times all semester. everything in lecture is pretty much what you read in the million page articles you have to read for the class. so just read on your own. his stories were interesting though, and hes a very nice guy. just no reason to go to class
I had him for personality psych during the first session of the summer. Such an interesting class! fantastic! I learned so much. The books were all interesting and informing. His teaching is based off his experiences, not necessarily text book. there is a lot of reading though from novel type books. There's even extra credit. Highly Recommend !!
Okay.. This class was one of the easiest class ever (personality psych). If you want an A, just use studyblue and answer to all of his questions on sakai. Also, write the paper. He looks at how much effort you put into the class, not your mere grades on the exams. Fool him by answering Qs on the sakai. I never attended to class, still got an A.
useless class.
He is a GREAT professor. Took him for personality psychology. honestly, his notes are all on study blue. try to read as much as you can from his books. its a lot of reading, but I like that they are like novels as opposed to textbook. his stories are interesting ! he's one of my favorite professors at rutgers. definitely understands his students.
If you are thinking about taking this class. DO NOT!!!! Hard! nothing what people expect. AVOID THIS CLASS. and save your money on his 7 books
Not at all what I expected. His whole class is based on his stories. I went to every class and paid attention and still did not perform well on exams. The paper is easy and he offers extra credit but it's more philosophy than psychology. Learned nothing about personality..SKIP IT!
One of the most real professors I've come across. He teaches based on first hand experience and tells vivd stories that keep you interested. If you go into this class with an open mind and an eagerness to learn you will come away with more than just a good grade.
The best professor I have ever had in college, and the best teacher I ever had in life. Even though people are annoyed about his stories, they are what makes the class so interesting. If you want to have story time and get an A from it, it has to be with him. I'm really sad he's retiring this month. I'll miss him deeply
Too bad he's retiring, the best psyche professor I have ever had.
I graduated from college many years ago, and he is one of the best teachers I ever had. His in-depth analysis that he allowed us to do with our preflective unconscious was absolutely amazing. I was sorry to hear from other postings that he is retiring. He will be missed.
Amazing professor and lectures. Prof. Atwood presents the material in a clear and interesting way, very inspiring. Great selection of books to read for the course. Students are encouraged to express their views and develop critical thinking. Professor Atwood has a great positive energy, was always available to answer questions. Fantastic course!
Excellent
I am an alumni who graduated in 2013 and had the chance of taking Prof. Atwood's classes years ago. He is a true mentor. He is a fragile soul with a very keen mind, as if he is from another era. If you want to broaden your horizons, gain knowledge to the essence of human mind, and also listen to some magical stories, take his classes!!! <3
