Prof. Baily is a tough teacher who takes his job very seriously. If you do the work and stay away from whining, you'll learn a lot.
it's a lot of work, but it's worth it
No Comments
Prof. Baily was one of the most difficult professors I had in college--which was a good thing. Listen to him; make deadlines--he really does have your best interest in mind.
He is a very good teacher. He is also a very nice person, he actually cares about his students and is interested in there wellbeing. without his English classes i would have never learned the correct way to study and write papers. Just an all around great person and great teacher. Take him if you ca
obnoxious
Prof Bailey is challenging and encouraging he expects college work from college students
He's a pretentious ****, but hes a damned good teacher.

It was awful. I don't know how many times he told me to redo my work, when I put hours into it. I got an A in everything, but a B- in his class, and I put the most time into his class. Try to take it with someone else.
he is an ****....does not take medical notes for late assignments even when the reason is late is due to emergency surgery!!
Very knowledgeable, but his classes are hard! I liked him, he made you work for your grades.
Horrible teacher. Never said anything good about NECCO Hates the school he teaches at, makes me feel uncomfortable. Switched from his advising, Very Snobby and mean about things. Did learn some from him. Very dry and boring class. Read former student papers out loud EVERY CLASS. Boring.
This man is awful. He expects everyone to give profound in-depth papers for a pre-requisite lit 101 class. This man is as condescending as they come. His comments are cryptic and unhelpful. Should you see his name listed as the teacher, I suggest you run for your life unless you’re a seeking a particularly rotten experience. Thanks for nothing.
It's probably been 10 years since I took is American Lit course, and I still remember him. Hard class, but amazing professor.
After being out of school for 9 years, I realized how good my writing is. Yes, he is a hard professor - you are expected to show up to class on time, have good attendance, and do your work! I received an A in his English Comp 2 class (9 years after I took English Comp 1) and I think people should not rate him poorly because they cannot do the work!
This guy expects everyone to be a hemmingway. If your writings are not Phd level the guy makes you rewrite it, despite it being a useless class for most students. He does not encourage students to develop their own writing styles, but to copy the styles of students that he likes. He's unorganized and just a plain bad teacher.
Let me just say, I have 3.89 GPA & am an English Literature Major. DR (he must be addressed as Dr.) BAILEY is very offensive, degrading, rude, obnoxious, and pretentious. You WILL come away with an excellent analysis of literature & learn but it WILL cost your academic confidence & possibly your passion for literature. Poor Approach! Not worth it!
Way too much work for not much in return.
I took British Literature I with Dr. Bailey. I love English and am an English major but Dr. Bailey completely destroyed any love I have for it. There is a lot of work, which I don't mind, but very little in return for all your hard work. We would have three postings a week and the only time he would respond to you was if he deemed it unnacceptable.
He is totally pompous, and has no empathy for anyone. My 4.0 GPA was not marred by his class, and I had no trouble keeping up with his expectations, but I still find it necessary to warn people that his approach to teaching (and maybe even literature) is harsh and cold. Lots of hard work required, and lots of condecension can be expected.
A lot of work is required for this class. He is a tough grader on paper assignments.
Best online course I have ever had, Fantastic reading list. My writing and analytic skills improved in a dramatic way. Discussion was required and I learned much from the other serious writers and students in the class. He gets the best out of you. He himself is a brilliant critic with a deep knowledge and love of his subject.
Very well organized and thorough teacher. His comments on my papers were detail. They pointed out good things and things that needed improvement. He was very positive and this made me more sure of myself as the course moved along. The class loved him and his approach. We bught a cake for the last meetings. Loves Lawrence and its students.
Wew did Hamlet, Othello, Richard II, and I did my paper on King Lear. I am a double major and English is one of my areas as a result of the class. His recommendation, as a Ph.D., helped to get me into the Carroll School of Management. They liked the fact that I would do this and Finance at the same time. His class opened up my mind.
This was a very interesting class. We read many works, and I found an important new writer: Henry James. Dr. B. showed us a way through all the difficult writers like James,Pound, and Eliot. He gave me a two page detailed evaluation of my paper on Henry James. He let me see the strength of my analysis and my ability as a critic. Fantastic teacher!
Best online class I ever took. Learned how American Lit is tied to American Civilization and also to my own life. I now understand the New Englsnd writers, esp. Hawthorne, in a way I never thought possible. hated them in H.S. I may major in American Civ when I transfer. Feel confident I have had a college level course that prepares me for BA study.
Professor has a real love for American Lit that becomes infectious as course moves along. The unit on Walden was a real high point for me. I went out to the pond last weekend to see it and to think about Thoreau. This has been a great experience.
Great course. Great instructor. Great learning experience. Would take the professor again.
This was the best writing course! He taught every minute of the 2.5 hour class. He wanted to bring us up to a high standard and he did that. I am now a much better writer. Mt brother will take the course in the fall because of my positive experience. I learned a lot! Gracias, Senor!
I dislike reading and writing, but Dr. Bailey changed my attitude. The class was from 6:30 to 9:10. The time just flew by. He filled the room with his high energy level and enthusiasm for the materials we read and wrote about. He had the same enthusiasm for all of us. He knows my culture and appreciates it. He is filled with LIFE. I am hopeful now.
This was an intense summer course. It was not a joke like the other summer courses I have taken. I can't believe the level of work Dr. Bailey got out of me and the other students. Everyone did what was required and pushed beyond the expectations. I am now a much better student. This is a great and caring professor who loves to teach. Take him!
I was surprised by the way the professor got us to be enthusiased by the materials on the syllabus. I became a fan first of Anne Bradstreet and ended up totally hypnotized by Walt Whitman. It was an intense experience led by a master teacher. Great class! I can't wait to take the ALII class next summer.
This was an 8 week Summer course and it was intense! I can't believe the amount of work we did. The instructor was a master at getting us to do our best. It seemed he was online 7 days a week at all hours to help with the reading and the writing. I became a better student because of the course and the reasonableness of the instructor. Great Course!
I took the course in the summer and it managed to cover everything on the syllabus. The instructor delivered on his promises. The course was an intellectual challenge which the professor showed how to meet and to master. Almost all of the students came up to the standard set.It turned us into excellent college students. I feel good about myself!
This was a very interesting class that explored many authors and one author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, in depth. All of the writers were related to one another so that there was much critical thinking in the class as a whole. The jump from the Puritans to the Concord writers was seamless. The Professor was brilliant but treated us like his equals. A++++
This was a great course taught by a serious and caring instructor. Every essay was reviewed carefully and students were urged to improve their performance by means of doing revisions. The instructor was persistent and patient. I learned how to be a better writer and reader. Fantastic class.
An online course that was demanding but always interesting. The professor read each essay carefully and rather than reject poor work, he gave chances to do the essay again. Once, it took me four tries for a T.S.Eliot post! Professor was mild mannered and encouraging, always. He is also courteous and respectful to his students. Epic experience!
This was a carefully organized course. The instructor started us with paragraphs on a play and then led us to a longer paper. Each of the short assignments led almost in a natural and easy way to a long paper. The readings were easly to relate to, so we learned a lot about life in general and our own lives in a concrete way. The grading was fair!
I had always dreaded English classes of any kind, but this professor and his class removed my anxiety, totally. He taught us how to read and to write with care. I was treated as an adult who had control of my own destiny by a very skilled and compasionate teacher. He showed all of us how to own our education in the class. It was a thrilling class!
Great class taught by a very interesting professor. The course covered everything from Mark Twain to Tony Morrison. It was a great learning experience not only because of the reading but also because of the great amount of writing. I became a much better student because of the professor and the course. This was a college level course. Take him!
This is a course that meets once a week for almost 3 hours. The time just flew by. The instructor was super-organized and energetic. There was never a down moment. It was unusual in that the prof. expected students to attend and to be prepared. This was a new experience for me in Evening Classes. He is a true professional. I learned a great deal.A+
Very interesting and very well organized course. The insights I have gained about reading and writing have made a great impact on me as a student. I realize that I can do high quality work. Very encouraging and talented teacher. He is flat out the best English teacher I have had in this school. I have learned much about life as well as aboutwriting.
This was a course taught by a very experienced and well organized professor. His attention to the needs of each student was extraordinary. I have had no professor at this school who gave me more help and attention. I felt cared for and valued. My writing made a major leap forward. The other students in the class loved his teaching and work ethic.
This was an exceptional class taught by a brilliant and hard-working teacher. He seemed to be online and available 7 days a week. I received a full three page evaluation of my course paper on a Faulkner novel. I have never received this degree of attention from any teacher. I give the highest degree of respect to this teacher and this course.
All of my papers were always returned at the very next class after they were turned in. Every paper was filled with very extensive comments. This was a first time experience for me in this area. No one had ever done this to my papers before. Dr. Bailey took my work seriously and this built my confidence. I wanted to say important things, and I did.
The writing assignments were based on literatry texts, but to write about the texts, you had to know how to read them. The instructor provided reading/study guides for EVERY reading. By the midpoint of the semester I found that I knew what to look for while I was reading. I became an excellent reader and that made me a writer with ideas to give.
Excellent and interesting course taught by a professional teacher. He knew how to get your best effort and he was always encouraging and pointing you to the next paper. After a while, I became confident and could see the wisdom of his method. This course turned me into a serious student who became eager to learn. I am grateful I took this course.
This was an unusual Evening Class experience for me. For once, a Professor insidted that everyone attend every class and be prepared for class. Those who were not co-operative were encouraged to leave, It was an exceptional educational experience taught by an adult to adult learners.I learned to read to write critically. papers. It built my esteem.
This was a challenging course taught by a teacher who knows his subject and who cares deeply about it and his students. I felt that the focus of the instructor was clearly on the well-being of everyone in the class. He demanded an acceptable work ethic and he validated it by his own high performance. This is the absolute best class I have at NECC.
This was a very well organized class taught by a professor who was very engaged with his students. We covered a great deal of material and actually came to master it. He turned us into scholars and lovers of literature. It turned out to be the best Humanities course I have taken. My girl friend is taking it the next time it is given on myreference
Fantastic teacher! He has reasonable standards and shows students how to meet them. He is very strict about attendance, and for the first time at night I found an instructor who demanded that students show up and be prepared. I felt my grade was worth something! We respected Dr. Bailey and this came in large part from the respect he showed to us!
As a person alwys afraid of doing any kind of writing, I began this class with great anxiety. The Professor, almost from the first moment of the first night, put me at ease. He writes long comments on papers, and there were many of them assigned, and the comments always pointout positive aspects before a negative is mentioned. Now I am a writer.
This course has turned into an incredible learning experience. For once students are not allowed to fill discussion boards with simple thoughts and bad writing. The level of student interaction is on the highest level I have experienced in the 7 Online Courses I have taken. The material is difficult, but the Dr. leads with skill and compassion. A++
American Literature I is a required course in my program, and I approached it with some anxiety. The instructor's method has quickly made me see the beauty of and the importance of the readings. I have become a fan of the Puritans as they are seen in Hawthorne. The instructor is a mentor to his students. He calls inspires the best in us. I love AL!
The reading in this course is very challenging, but the profesor has set up the course to deal with problems in advance. He ha all the students actively involved. This is the first time I have experienced this in an online course. This has become an exciting learning experience. It ha made me a better student. This is a great course, a great prof.
I have problems with my writing, but this course is structured to let me overcome them, The pace of the course is steady and reasonable. The reading assignments are reasonable. Some writing is due for every class. It is not a class for those who want to be absent or to miss assignments. Professor knows how to get the work out of his students. LuvIt
This class meets once a week and it is taught by a very dynamic Professor who begins at 6:30 sharp and runs a class with passion and energy. I have learned so much more than I expected from my own work, from the other students, and the professor. At the end of the night I have trouble sleeping because of the energy surge of the class.Great teacher!
This was an extremely interesting and enjoyable intellectual experience. The 3 hours just flew by and all of the students in the course were cooperative and interested in the work required. Dr. Bailey is an incredible teacher who is deeply interested in his students. he is the best teacher I have taken in the 3 years I have been at NECC. A++ class.
This was an 8 week intensive class in American Literature II. A massive amount of material was covered and the course seriously educated me. I was surprised to find how much work I could do and how much I could learn. The Professor was hard-working, diligent, and his love for the Literature was infectious. He is the best online teacher I have had.
This coyrse has been a very pleasant surprise. The instructor is filled with energy and the class has been drawn into it. The participation level is an all time high for any night course I have taken at NECCO. I have improved as a writer and I have a confidence level I never thought I would get. I hate it when we end at 9:10. Great course and prof.
Dr. Bailey is an excellent teacher who is always encouraging. He writes long comments on papers and explains them when they are passed back. Every paper is returned at the next class. He has built up my confidence and that of the other members of the class. Those of us who attend and do the work have become great students. He is an excellent prof.
American Literature II is the best Lit course I have ever taken. The instructor was adept at getting students to participate for every unit. There was a growth curve that was apparent in my writing as the semester progressed. The insights of Dr. Bailey were amazing. They made you see the importance and the beauty of the works from Twain to Welty.
This American Lit I course is a pleasant surprise. The instructor demands high quality work, but he gives those unable to come up to his standard a chance to re-write their postings. The quality of the work is high because of the standards of the instructor. He is an intellectual with both knowledge and compassion. I am happy. I learn a great deal.
This is an exciting class. Students are required to post essays. The work is steady and the instructor has high standards which he HELPS all students achieve. All of us are moving forward together. To this point, I have learned a great deal about Hawthorne/ New England Puritans. Grade for course and teacher: "A." If you want to learn, take Bailey.
Very difficult to please. Anything less than perfect is basically nothing. Very critical. Sure he's a doctor and knows his stuff, but he is not nice to learn from. Would not take a class with him again.
Dr. Bailey is a brilliant and creative teacher who is incredibly patient, especially with students who persist in posting incomplete or hasty essays on the discussion boards. He allows for endless rewrites that are probably resented by students doing superficial work. I adopted his method under his guidance and I have improved greatly as a writer.
My term paper was returned with almost 4 pages of commentary. Dr. Bailey gave a balanced view of the paper that further educated and encouraged me. No one has ever paid attention to my work in this way, EVER! He is a great teacher and human being. This is not a course for students who want no work, want to be told they are great, and want to moan.
This was an excellent course. It is the only online course I have taken where there was a clear standard in operation. It was a college level course taught by a compassionate and dedicated professional. Dr. B. turned me into a writer.I love AL I. A++
The content of this course requires constant challenging reading assignments and posted essays on the readings. The professor is very well organized and helpful at all times. He wants college level work and he manages to get a great deal out of his students. Best discussion board I have been a part of. Teacher is inspirational. Simply the best
I have been surprised by my own performance and that of the other students in the class. Both the writing assignments and the readings are challenging, but Dr. Bailey has found a way to smooth out difficult patches and to show us how to perform well. I feel that my mind has grown greatly by my contact with Shakespeare, Milton, and Dryden. Take him!
I made the mistake of not only taking one but two of Bailey's literature classes. No matter how much effort you put forth he isn't satisfied and its never good enough. He is also extremely passive aggressive in his e mails and requires you to e mail him after you've completed every assignment and if you don't it will affect your grade.
This is an amazing class that has covered British Literature from the beginnings (Old English Poetry) to the 18t Century. The course work has been intense, but it has turned me into an effective college student. At last I have learned that I can do high level work in the Humanities. The evaluation of my course paper was 4 pages long. Caring teacher
Professor Bailey rarely every answers questions clearly (and without a passive aggressive tone). He tells his students not to come off as insulting in their posts, but then embarrasses them in group emails in front of their peers for asking questions. I do not recommend his class to anyone. He is very disrespectful to his students.
Over 10 years ago, I took British Lit 1&2, as well as American lit, with Professor Bailey. I have yet to come across an individual who had higher expectations. However, the reward was well worth the effort. His praise held a far greater meaning than most teachers because his standard was so high. He is a brilliant man with an impressive work ethic
This is the first online professor I have taken who has high standards but who devotes great time and effort to getting his/her students to come up to the standards. I have learned more than I ever thought possible in an online course. He pays attention to everything that is posted and then gives several chances for revision. I am now a writer.
First High School/College class I have taken that was not a joke. He demanded mature behavior and created a class that turned some teenagers into college students. Knows his material very well. Loves the readings. He taught me how to write a college paper. I did very little writing in my H.S. English classes. He showed how to write papers. Great!
Dr. Bailey is a great professor who will help you exceed your own expectations.
I only took Dr. Bailey's online class for two days before dropping it. First of all his online blackboard is so confusing to understand. He expects you to do WAY to much work in the time of a week which is ridiculous seeing as I have other matters to attend to (work other class, etc). Finally don't expect him to help you. He's very condescending.
He was a pretty tough grader but he gave good feedback. His lectures were long and boring and he was sometimes very rude. I had him for night class once a week and he'd have essays due every other week. Reading was required and he always had to you type your homework responses.
Fantastic Teacher, Exceptional Feedback. When I needed help, he gave it. He seemed to know what I wanted and needed even before I asked.
Awesome teacher. Course taught great insights about Hawthorne, Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman. He filled my mind with ideas and made me into a better student. Showed me, as in Hawthorne's short stories, that I did not need to be perfect.
My most memorable professor (along side Billy H of course post vice presidency) he is the first teacher who is compelled me to apply myself and want to work to my fullest potential. He was The perfect mixture of fear and respect for me and so I took him four times Total, yes by choice, BritLit 1& 2 , American Lit 1&2. Was my advisor as well.
Do not take his online course. It is a DISASTER. Working full time means I have taken my fair share of online classes in the past. His, BY FAR, has the most confusing set up. It is impossible to find the right assignment that he wants. Then, if you do the wrong one, you can't fix it. I will not be taking another online class with him.
Do NOT take his online class. I have been taking online classes for 2 semesters now and Ive loved them. This one BY FAR was the most confusing and disorganized set up I have ever seen. Way too hard to follow. I emailed him multiple times to where he read my message and did NOT reply. By far the worst online class ever and I withdrew ASAP.
Received a bad grade every time. After fixing all feedback given for draft papers he finds new problems that he didn't address previously. Didn't learn anything, overall awful experience.
Dr. Bailey will take every opportunity to be condescending. His grading criteria is not in line with any other NECC class and is pedantic. He requires perfection for a B. I have never had a C in my life until this class. Avoid this professor at all costs. No Pros. All cons. Poor communication if you need to reach out.
I understand how GB has the reputation that he does and the density of the course pushed me to my limit (that honestly was more intimidating and challenging than the difficulties of the content itself for me, at least) and he's not the most tech savvy, but he definitely teaches you to demand the most out of yourself. That's a good lesson to learn.
I've taken two classes with this professor and both were miserable to experience. These classes are constant busy work, with no time to retain any information. It doesn't help that he is condescending and full of himself, treating students like a nuisance. Bailey makes literature a depressing subject and that is just unacceptable.
If you're serious about challenging yourself, working at the highest standards, and finding out what you're capable of, take a class with Dr. Bailey. If you're trying to slide through college with minimal effort, move on.
Dr. Bailey was a great professor. I took the accelerated online class, so it was intense. I learned a lot from him and my classmates because of the structure of the class. Very organized and responsive with high expectations of his students. We read some great pieces of literature, very enjoyable experience.
