George is the best! He teaches the toughest course there is in college and makes it seem like common sense. However, he tests you not on your knowledge, but rather the small things that change a situation. He wants you to think more than anything to put all the pieces together that he has given you. It is a long road, but George makes it fun!
George is great! I have never understood a subject as much as I understand ochem. That doesn't mean I will get the grade I want, though! George is tough... a lot of people will fail. You have to be willing to work even just to pass.
Extremely good teacher. You will understand the material if you study everday for a bit as you go along the class. Do not save studying till the last minute. The big problem is, is that his exams are extremely difficult, sometimes seemingly impossible. BUT if you get an A on the Final Exam, you get an A in the class, that's his rule.
My dear friends, George is a great teacher. His exams are very difficult, but considering the material, you can't expect a cake walk. Despite getting a C, I would take George again. Make sure you study EVERY day, otherwise you might not pass. So much stress, but George helps you through it.
George is a great person and an awesome teacher. He is willing to help you with OChem even on weekends. His class is tough, but it's worth your time. Even though you are studying for his class 20 hours a week, you won't feel like you have spent that much time.
George is the man. He makes O chem seem like common sense and is always around to help if you need him. He make class fun and a scary subject seem a lot less intimidating. He's a wonderful man and the best teacher I've ever had. Just a warning...watch out for the tests. They are hard and the class average is pretty high so don't expect a curve.
George is without a doubt the clearest and most helpful professor I've ever had. Has great real-life analogies for lots of situations. George doesn't give the hardest tests in the department, but there is little curve, especially at the top end. You need darn near a 90% for an A, 50% is barely passing. When in doubt, the answer is steric hindrance.
by far the best professor i have ever had. It wasn't easy, but he was extremely helpful. I was also amazed at how much he cared. he learned darn near everyone's name in a 300 person class. Fantastic teacher. I would definitely take george again. I wish he was teaching ochem 2.
He has to be possibly the best science teacher here at pitt. You will be amazed at how he make you understand organic chemistry. Because he teaches and explains so well, there's no need to read the book. Going to his class at 10 was somehow not so bad. He's funny and so flamboyant that it cracks you up. Study your butt off and an A is possible
Possibly the best professor I have ever had. He teaches the hardest course and makes it as comprehensible as possible. His office is always open, he gives great advice, he arranges so many review sessions and tries so hard to help you learn, but at the same time realizes that OChem is not the world. Great, great guy.
Gotta say, George really is the best prof. I've had here at Pitt. I'm not even in the Chemistry degree, but considered switching because of how clear he made o-chem seem. I actually like it now. Something I never thought possibly. But wow, if you can take him, do it. Even if you hate o-chem. After taking it with him, you'll like it.
BEST teacher in the world. DO NOT take anyone else for organic chemistry.
George is the man. He makes himself available to every student in his class for any additional help. He is extremely fair and is dedicated to his students. I wouldn't take anyone else but George for OChem 1!!!
George is the Man. If you do not like Ochem before taking his class, he will make you think twice. Dear Heart, with his teaching style, you have to go to class every time, or else you will miss something important. Also, if you ever need advice about school or life, you can always talk to him. His door is always open and he doesnt mind visit
Thee best chemistry teacher possible. Very helpful and he enjoys what he does so it makes it super easy to learn. he is a great person!!
Best professor I've ever had. I actually became a chemistry major because of this man.
Awesome. Super Sexy too!!!
The man knows what he is talking about and actually knows the answers to your questions even if its not within the scope of the course. i got a c in his course but would def take him for ochem 2 if i had the chance
loovvveee him. so funny and its a great class.
Bandik is the best. Always there to answer your questions even if you had 20 every day after class like I did! Makes OChem fun! I know it's hard to believe but it can happen with him! I was in OChem II w/ Wilcox the 1st time and had to withdraw, then I took it in the summer with George and I got an A! He's not easy but is willing to help!
sexiest. man. alive.
I can barely pay attention in his class, he is so hot.
Absolutely the best chemistry teacher at Pitt. For both ochem 1 and 2, he honestly made class enjoyable. Subject is still hard, but why suffer through it with someone else when you can take George and look forward to class. a great teacher, a great man.
Fantastic teacher! He really helps you understand Organic Chemistry. The tests are completely fair and he provides so many resources for his students. He interacts with all the students and even make the effort to learn practically everybody's name.
Amazing Professor. Makes OChem fun & much easier to understand. Gets to know students on a personal level & makes everyone extremely comfortable. Best professor I've ever had.
George is the one to take for O-Chem. He explains everything very clearly and class is very engaging. Take good notes and you'll only need the book as a secondary source. You'll probably come away feeling like you know more than your grade reflects, though, as grading is strict and there is hardly any curve. For an A, you'll need around 88%.
George is great! I had a hard time understanding Organic Chemistry and he makes things very clear and understandable. His tests are hard, but I would still take his class.
The best professor at Pitt. Is crystal clear in lecture, makes connections in class, and does everything possible to ensure students' success. Open office hours and does his best to learn everyone's name, with a lot of success. Tests aren't too hard as long as you attend lecture and do the practice tests. Again, don't miss lecture.
One of the best professors at Pitt. Is very helpful to all of his students and genuinely cares about the students.
George is the best professor that I have ever had! I have never had someone so willing to go above and beyond to help the entire class learn. His tests are very hard, so study more than you think you should!
George is the best. His class is really hard but he really cares about his students and tries really hard to be sure everyone understands everything.
George is the best! Have to take him.
George is the best professor I have ever had at Pitt. His lectures are so clear and interesting, and he really wants everyone to understand why things happen not just to memorize it. He cares about students and will know you well if you go to class and participate. Take his class!
George is by far the best professor you will have the opportunity to meet at Pitt. To say he is outgoing and extremely helpful are complete understatements. His classes are very challenging, but by no means impossible. If you haven't had the chance to get to know him, I highly recommend taking one of his classes or joining the ACS chapter.
George is a fantastic teacher and a great person. He teaches the material for understanding, not memorization, so the class focuses on the theoretical part of ochem. Because of this, the book is only a supplement to what he covers in lecture (READ: go to class). For the exams, understand (not just memorize) the notes thoroughly and you'll do fine.
He is the best professor I've had. Take him and I sincerely know you won't regret it. You will understand ochem. You will have fun too. Seriously! Don't miss a single lecture. You would be missing alot. Exams are fair. Study everyday. Do as many practice problems as you can. Not only will you learn ochem. You will make a great friend too.
He is a great teacher and you WILL learn organic chemistry from him. However, he likes to do grading favors for his "friends." If you're good at kissing a**, you can get at least half a letter grade added to your final score.
Best professor ever. Take his class! He made the material clear and fun. His test were somewhat difficult, but if you attended class and paid attention you'll do good. Study for the final.
George is a great teacher and a great guy. You will actually understand Ochem after having him. However, his exams are impossible and are unfair. His graders will not hesitate to give you a 0 on a problem that you had 98% of the work right and missed the last step on. The only way you will get a decent grade is by sucking up. Good luck.
nice sometimes
George is the best teacher ever. He clearly explains everything and you will leave the class a step above the rest. You really have to know your stuff for the exams, but if you do you can easily get an A for the class. Attend the peer recitations!!!!!
By far best ochem prof, EXTREMELY helpful, accessible, great guy, tons of review sessions, BUT BE WARNED, exam grading is VERY STRICT, smartest kids take him so tiny small curve, gives fewest A's in dept, you make your life a lot harder on yourself taking him as great a teacher as he is even getting a B is HARD, much harder than most other ochem
If you want a good grade, then don't take him. If you want to learn, then take him. He's very good at explaining things and helpful. But his tests are much harder than other teachers, and much harder than the book. So, there's not much to go on when studying for the test. Also, he specifically doesn't put what he taught on the tests. Good luck.
GREAT teacher, but for all pre meds consider this: in science classes usually A's take hard work but B's aren't that hard and usually are an ugh grade. W George, B's take hard work and are good, A's are VERY VERY difficult and involve luck frankly, and C's take work, avg here isn't bad. Cutthroat competition: George's class ALWAYS gets the top kids
Perfect at explaining, teaching, and helping, and there are TONS OF CHANCES TO GET HELP not just from him he provides, look his class is one of the hardest a/b's you'll find at pitt, most competitive ochem smartest kids, and he has very strict grading and will try some tricks and a very hard final, but a B is doable and he's great for rec letters.
George is fantastic- he will go out of his way to help you. That said, organic chem is already hard, and George doesn't cut any slack. He teaches for understanding- it is NOT enough to just memorize your notes for exams. There is rarely a curve. This is not the class for an "easy" A or B. But if you want to UNDERSTAND ochem, take George. Great man.
Great professor. Doesn't just skim through the material but goes very deep into the underlying "Why?" of O Chem. If you work hard, you will learn O Chem. The class isn't easy, but it is worth the teaching you will recieve.
George is an awesome professor. Here is the deal, go to lecture, practice doing reactions, and you will ace his class. Let me make something clear. His exams are FAIR, NOT HARD or impossible!! Before he lets you take the exam, he makes sure you are crystal clear on everything conceptually so when you take that test, you WILL ACE IT!!! TAKE HIM!
One of the best professors i have had so far. Great teacher, one of the most helpful and kind professors at pitt. And I'm saying that even though i did REALLY badly in his class. His is by far the hardest teacher i have ever had. That being said, I've never learned so much in class. If you take him don't take any other hard classes with it. period.
GREAT TEACHER, difficulty of class truly a matter of how natural the material comes to you, how well you truly think/natural ability to use logic on exams and how u approach it so it itll vary A TON by ind. Hes tougher than most other ochem classes and you make your life harder taking him but hes great, final was def easier this yr than previous yrs
The most dedicated teacher ever. He is difficult; the midterms require you to push electrons in ways you would not necessarily think. STRICT grading, but you will learn an incredulous amount of OChem. Doesn't use book. DO NOT SKIP CLASS. Attend peer sessions that have competent TA. Do their WS to know all tricks of the trade and you will do well.
I love him, although he's the hardest professor I've ever had.
Best professor Ive had at Pitt and also one of the nicest. George goes out of his way to help his students. He makes sure you understand why reactions happen and doesn't let you just memorize them. Go to the peer review sessions! They will help your grade tremendously! Definitely take him!
Pretty good professor. He puts his heart and soul into helping everyone out. However, the tests are ridiculously stupid hard. He puts questions on the test that he has never talked about. If you just want to memorize it and get a decent grade, choose Wilcox.
Wonderful man. Not only is he a great teacher but he tries to learn everyone's name. His practice tests are a must, if you do well on that then you'll do well on the exams. I only used the book for the practice problems. Study his notes and your sure to do well. Best professor at Pitt!!
Best professor ever! Ensures that everyone understands material before moving on. George covers a lot of material, but as long as you attend class and study you should do fine. Attend the many review sessions and ask questions if you have any doubts about the material. I would recommend enrolling in George's classes to anyone that wants to learn.
Had George for Ochem 1 and the Honors Organic 2 Lab. The other comments on here are spot on-- George is a great professor and human being. Also, the honors lab is fantastic. You design your own mini-research project over the semester and get to learn techniques that aren't usually taught in into organic labs. Take George!
Amazing prof(Seriously could easily be best you have all 4 yrs here) You'll gain a TON from him. But make no mistake, class is brutal and he does no favors w super strict grading and tricks on tests. Gotta ask yourself if its worth the risk to your gpa. There are def easier ochem sect that demand much less but none come close to teaching like him.
Best professor at Pitt! He makes sure everyone understand all the material and offers many practice tests that model actual exams spot on - if you can do well on those you will do well on exams. George is very accessible outside of class as well and will make every effort to help students who want to learn. Choose him for a good Ochem experience!
Just a good man. Great teacher and a great person. Maybe over 200 people in the class. He comes in everyday, looks at people, and says their name. He gets to know everyone in there. It's impressive. He refers to you as "my friends." He is something else.
George is one of the nicest teachers I have ever had. He tries to get to know everyone and really want everyone to succeed. Ochem is a very hard subject but with George if you put in the effort you will be able to really understand the material.
George is literally the best professor I've ever had, and undoubtedly has to be the best professor at Pitt. He's SO friendly, loves his job, is extremely approachable, and will go the distance just to help out his students. He also makes it his personal goal to get to know all the students in his class. I would HIGHLY recommend him!
Phenomenal prof, and yet I wish I took another prof. If your pre-prof, frankly your goals to get best grade you can in ochem. Learning ochem really well just isnt that important. Youll love his class but come out thinking was it worth learning so well but ending up with lower grade? For most it isnt. There are much easier sect to get good grades in
By far the best prof I have ever had. The tests are harder but he teaches was better than any other prof so as long as you attend class, peer review, do book problems and his old exams you're golden. The best teacher for pre-med/pre professional at this university. Also, he learns everyone's name and is incredibly personable.
You'll learn more from George than any other professor here at pitt. He teaches you everything you need to know and more. He explains the theory behind what happens rather than making blanket statements and moving on. His tests are more difficult than other professors but that's fair since you will have a greater knowledge than other students will
George is the best professor that I've had so far at the University of Pittsburgh. He goes into depth about the material, and teaches you everything you need to know. He is crystal clear and makes sure the class understands every concept for tests. I HIGHLY recommend George if you want to be engaged during lectures!
George is the best professor at Pitt. He genuinely cares how each student does and knows everyone in his class by name. Holds multiple review sessions before each test. His tests are difficult but I understand ochem and didnt have to memorize anything because of this I only had to study one day for the final since I learned the material as we went.
A lot of people leave George's class saying that O chem is their favorite subject which is pretty incredible. Very fair when it comes to grading and incredibly nice, clear, and engaging. I looked forward to. I wish there was a way to give better than a 5 for overall quality.
George is by far the best professor that I have ever had. He explains the material in a clear and logical manner. He is also very approachable and even takes the time to learn all of his students by name. His tests are difficult but stress logic and understanding more than memorization.
George is an amazing professor and an equally amazing person. I didn't realize how spoiled I was until enrolling in Chem 2 with another instructor, and I will miss him dearly. Although I didn't earn the hottest grade, I will never regret taking chem with Bandik. Miss ya George!
My Advice: this is probably the hardest ochem sect to get a good grade. Best of both worlds: take someone else but sit in on his lectures when you can because he is a great prof. If you do take him, focus EVERYTHING you can on the final. Study WEEKS in advance because an A on the final and your set period. And the final is easier than some midterms
George is my absolute favorite! His exams are hard, but if you go to his office hours, he's amazingly helpful in answering questions. He doesn't use the book at all and has no courseweb. Make sure you go to class and get to know him! My favorite teacher ever, I'm definitely going to ask him for helo with future chem classes.
Bandik is EXTREMELY interested and dedicated to making sure every student in his class is PROFICIENT at organic chemistry. That being said, he challenges you on the exams with problems you have never seen with the intention of pushing you beyond your limit and making sure you know the material, not just memorized the mechanisms.
George is hands down the best professor I have ever had at Pitt. Yes, he is difficult, but he is hilarious, sarcastic, quirky, and a great human being. He goes above and beyond to make sure that you understand the concepts he teaches. He teaches you the fundamental reasons WHY things happen, NOT memorization. If you are taking the MCAT, take him.
George is an amazing lecturer and I learned far more than I expected to. My grades are lower than they would be if I were taking someone else's tests, but I'm much better prepared for the MCAT and I like chemistry again. In the long run probably the best option at Pitt. Everything on the exams is from the lectures.
He is a fantastic professor and fantastic person as well. I learned so much this semester. His tests are challenging but fair. Definitely take advantage of peer review and participate in class to stay on top of the material. (Here's your pepper George!)
George is an absolutely amazing professor. The hype that he gets is absolutely deserved. The class is difficult just like any organic class, but there are ample opportunities to improve and get help. Far and away the best professor I've had at Pitt. To top it all off, his fashion sense is trend-setting!
George is an amazing teacher and an awesome person. He makes lecture a discussion and gets all the students involved. He'll know almost everyone's name within the first month. He's always accessible, very helpful, and really cares that everyone understands the material. If you put the time in, honestly an easy A.
Easily the best professor I've had at Pitt thus far. Always accessible for students and the exams are very fair and doable if you put the time in and go to peer reviews. If you have a chance to take him, do it. I would take him again in a heartbeat.
George is so personable and sweet- and he's always available to help. Even if you aren't in his class he is friendly and always willing to talk about problems. Highly recommended.
Best professor at Pitt. Go to lectures and you won't need to read the book, he picks what sections to actually teach. Do the assigned homework problems and learn each concept inside and out. Exams aren't as hard as some other O-chem 1 classes and have a very forgiving grading policy. You'll learn more and have a better time than any other section.
I LOVE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY BECAUSE OF GEORG! Before I took George's class I did not understand what all of the hype was about, but now that I have been through it I can honestly say that George is the best professor at Pitt. He explains things in such a way that will make sense to anyone. This class will give you an edge over any Ochem 1 student!
He isn't easy. Chooses to know some students and others not. Take another professor and attend George's lectures-- that seems to be the best option to consolidate an acceptable grade and a strong learning experience
Dr. Bandik is such a sweetheart. He tries very hard to make time for his students and explains things in a way that never makes you feel stupid. What everyone says is true, he is by far the best professor at Pitt.
Phenomenal teacher but I still wouldn't recommend taking him if your focus is on your grade(ie pre meds). There are just much easier options. You'll understand ochem but good grade is much more beneficial. Its much harder with Bandik who builds tests around thinking in tricky conceptual ways and a class with the best students( toughest competition)
Very helpful and accessible outside of class. Very enthusiastic and provides many resources. He is difficult, but that's chemistry.
Incredible teacher, phenomenal human being, and he's very hot!!!
George is a very personable character. He will try to memorize the name of each of the 250+ students in his lecture by the end of the term. The class is completely based on tests that are very difficult. If you are pre-med DO NOT take this class. That said, he is a wonderful teacher when it comes to the difficult concepts of Ochem.
Incredible professor. Best one I've ever had, ever,in my entire academic career.
Took his summer 6 week class, and I can not stress enough how amazing he is. Truly wonderful. I recommend manipulating your schedule juts to take his class.
Great professor, hilarious, teaches the material so well. Absolutely worth it, even though he's super difficult (trust me, you won't regret his class).
George is the best teacher I have ever had at Pitt. Do not listen to those who say Pre-meds should not take him. I took the MCAT without looking back on OChem because he taught the concepts so well. Awesome dude.
Best prof I had my 4yrs here. That said, your goal in ochem is probably just to get best grade. George is NOT the guy for that. Demands much more than other prof, has smarter students(curve killer), and he demands high level thinking over memorization unlike other profs. Take at your own risk many 3.7+gpa kids I know struggled to/didnt get B's.
I LOVE HIM! He's the best prof ever at Pitt! He made me love Chemistry again! Take him if you want to truly understand ochem topics :)
Hands down the best professor at Pitt. George is a passionate professor that will challenge you to learn the material. Coming from a student who struggled in O Chem 1, George inspired me to engage myself within every lecture and pursue the grade I deserved. Put in the time, ask questions, attend office hours, and you will be successful.
This guy has 180 ratings and an average 4.85.0 overall quality!! I've seen students walk out of his tests saying that they failed it, yet they still proclaim that orgo is their favorite class. Very nice man, refers to his students as sweetie, children. Dearheart is a favorite. Everything you ever learned will suddenly make sense
If you go to his office hours hes the best
George is the best. Insists that you call him by his first name. Will buy you colored shoelaces. Class is very hard but lectures are very helpful.
Great lecturer. Hard class but Ochem is hard at pitt; def. recommend
George is fantastic. He makes some really tough tests but you will feel that you learn the material even if the tests may not represent it. Very nice and willing to work with you and always fun to talk with. Incredible for audible learners. Loves analogies and clear enunciation of material. Made my most dreaded class the best of the semester. Take
Best teacher.
This class is definitely hard, but it is doable if you are willing to put in the work. George is by far the best professor I have had at Pitt. He is passionate about what he is doing and makes himself always available to his students. His love of teaching and chemistry makes you enjoy class, not to mention he's hilarious.
George is the best professor I have ever had! While you may not get an A in the class, you definitely will feel as if you understand everything, which is helpful for organic 2!
George is one of the best professors I've ever had. Hes very enthusiastic and clear during lecture ,and makes sure you understand everything. I should have put more effort into the class to do well, but it is possible. If you want understanding and a great foundation, take George. If you want a great grade, be prepared to work or take someone else.
Go to lecture, go to peer review sessions, go to office hours, and you will do fine in his class. George is the best professor you will take at Pitt and and even better guy.
I had no background in chemistry when I took Bandik's class and I was really intimidated. But he really ignited my interest in chemistry and I still think of him as one of my most significant professors. He's super busy, so it's best to approach him in person. He's very warm and approachable. Total encyclopedia, awesome lectures, learns your name.
George is easily the best professor at Pitt. He doesn't use slides and speaks from memory so lectures are really well done and entertaining. Tests can be tough but they're always fair. Go to every single lecture and review session that Bandik holds and you'll be fine. TA review sessions are helpful too!
G is an amazing professor! the best one I had at Pitt. He is extremely helpful with all the material. He is a tough grader and his class is not an easy A. But you have time to get the A until the final. (get an A on the final A in the class) There is definitely a lot of effort needed for this class but ultimately it is worth it!
George is the best teacher you could have. Tests are tough, but he will make you love Organic Chemistry by the time the semester is over.
He's a great teacher but if you're pre-med take at your own risk.I would only recommend this class for people who want to learn ochem well and can take a hard earned B on their gpa.
George is the best teacher, he is always happy to help. Book is necessary because practice problems are a must.
Seriously, the best professor I've had in college. He made organic chemistry into my favorite class, and he's just a really talented guy (plus I ended up getting an A). Obviously, this class is IMMENSELY hard, but organic chemistry invariably will be. If you're willing to put in the effort, George's class will be a great experience for you.
People love him because he's so friendly and a fantastic professor but there are much easier options and if your premed that's all that matters. Graduated neuro major and this was my hardest class I ever took at pitt (ochem 2 w another prof was much easier). Very theory heavy, tough grader and gives tricky tests you make life harder by taking him
George is an amazing professor! OChem 1 and 2 are really conceptual and thus tend to be hard, but he makes you prepare for it in his class. His lectures are amazing! Tests are hard, but fair. He is hilarious and this class helped me prepare for MCAT too! I would definitely recommend taking him!
One of the best chemistry professors on the east coast!
Best professor I've ever had
George is a great professor but his class is extremely tough. All students love him because he is extremely kind and helpful but his tests are still difficult. This class is good to prepare for standardized exams but if you want an A in the class there are definitely easier options.
This class seems to be overwhelming taken by much smarter students. Making it very competitive and the chance of a curve virtually impossible. The class is very tough, and the tests nothing like what was covered in lecture. Extremely, difficult, would definitely not recommend to another student.
George Bandik eases you into organic chemistry for the first month of class. His tests are extremely difficult, forcing you to connect previous concepts to either explain why certain reactions happen or to effectively synthesize given products from a given starting molecule. Great guy and passionate about chemistry.
Best professor at pitt at weeding out kids who have desires to go into the medical field.
George is by far the best organic chemistry professor in the department. You will learn in his class and do well too. His tests are pretty standard regarding difficulty but they're easy when he teaches the material. Oh yes and he is possibly the nicest/friendliest person at the University of Pittsburgh!
George is one of the greatest professors I have ever had. He is the nicest guy, actually cares about his students, and really teaches the material. His tests are really tough, but the material is tough, so be ready to study.
George is a very nice guy and always easy to talk to, he gets to know all of his students in his class which sets him apart from other professors. His exams are the some of the hardest you can have in the organic chemistry department, so there are easier professors out there.
George is by far the best professor I have had at Pitt. He sincerely wants his students to do well and really goes the extra mile to help those who are struggling. His lectures are given from memory and without power point slides, so attending lecture is a must. He also really wants the pepper on here, so I gave him one.
Simply put, Dr. Bandik is the man and is also a great ochem teacher. He teaches all his lectures at the blackboard and does not supply notes so it's a good idea to go to class. He encourages questions and doesn't make anyone feel bad about questions, no matter how simple. His tests are difficult but not unreasonable.
George is so far the best professor I have had at Pitt and is one of the kindest people I have ever met. He has plenty of resources for you to go to if you need help in the class, his lectures are engaging and clear, and he is very receptive and encouraging of any questions you may have. Definitely would recommend!
I know you won't read this, George, but this pepper's for you :) I could have put a lot more into this class than I did, but George is by far the best professor I've had. If you have the ability to take it, do. You might not get an A, but that's not what learning is about. George makes sure that you know Organic Chemistry, middle finger and all.
George is the best professor at Pitt. You will leave the class with a better understanding of organic chemistry than students from any other professor. Tests are hard and you will have to work for your grade.
Honestly my favorite professor so far. Had him when I retook this class and it went from being my least favorite class the semester before to a class I look forward to and enjoy.
George... you won't see this but I gave you a pepper!!! lol George is the best professor I have had so far. I absolutely love him and everything about his teaching style! He made Chem 910 fun for me and I could never thank him enough! Go to class and take notes and you will do amazing in this class.
pay attention in class and you'll do fine. tests are fair.
I'm taking a summer ochem 2 class, and Im glad I did. This class may be super condensed but he's an AMAZING teacher. He gets to know everyone, loves teaching, super easy to talk to and ask for help. A+++ teacher
Honestly the best teacher I have ever had in an incredibly tough course. If you go to class, put in the necessary time and care about learning the subject and receiving a good grade you will receive a good grade. The exams are very difficult but there is always a curve.
THE best teacher I've ever had at the University of Pittsburgh. He really cares about his students and his lectures are extremely easy to follow. I have never taken my phone out in this class for that reason.
God Bless George Bandik. If you are a science major and do not take George for OChem you're a fool!!
Best professor at Pitt. You can see he truly cares- even takes the time to learn everyone's names in lectures of 100+. His lectures are enjoyable and engaging. I've had to take this class multiple times & wouldn't have passed if it wasn't with him. I really can't say enough good things about him. I would wait to take this class with George!
George is the best professor I have had at Pitt. He is a great man who engages students in a way I've never seen. He wants his students to succeed and will work as hard as he can to make it happen. Organic Chemistry sucks in general but George makes his lectures fun. Do not be fooled tho! His exams are extremely difficult even if you study!
George is the best teacher I have ever taken at Pitt. He is very accessible to students and never makes you feel stupid for asking questions he just answered. I went from hating Chemistry with a B+. You have to work hard for an A, but it's very doable with George. Also, George, if you're reading this, I hope you get your hot pepper!!
Oh George. I honestly wish I could pick more tags. George is hilarious, extremely accessible, respected and loved by students, inspirational, and so much more. I was worried about taking this class because I heard his tests were very challenging. I am so glad I took him anyway bc he was the best professor I've ever had. TAKE HIM. You wont regret it
Failed out of ochem 2 and had to retake it. George made it the best possible experience and can explain things so easily that other professors spend weeks trying to explain.
Love George so much. He is one of the best teachers I've ever had.
Amazing professor, made Ochem understandable. 100% recommend
George is a great teacher because he really really wants every student to understand the material he teaches. Ochem 1 is a hard subject but he tries to give you a conceptual understanding. Horribly hard class but he makes it bearable. You have to go to lecture to get understanding of the material. No homework.
His tests are tough, but extremely fair. He truly cares about the success of all of his students. He knows nearly every name in a 300 person lecture hall, and makes himself and his TAs very accessible for questions and help. You don't really need the textbook to be successful because his lectures are amazing, and you can get problems from TAs.
George was by far the best professor I've ever taken at the University of Pittsburgh. If possible, take this man for O Chem 1 because he is the most caring and understanding professor you will ever have. Book is only needed to do practice problems and you never need to read from it. Tests are difficult so be prepared to grind if you want an A.
This Ochem 1 class taught by George is, by far, one of the best classes I have taken at Pitt so far. While it is difficult - be prepared to work hard - George wants to see his hardworking students succeed. He is extremely encouraging and cares about everyone. I would recommend George to anyone! (P.S. Hope you get your hot pepper, George!)
He is a very nice person but don't let that fool you. His exams are very difficult and you have to be able to think on your feet while taking the exams. Along with the exams, receiving partial credit is very hard and it really affects your grade. Also, you have to do well on the exams since there is no homework or participation grades.
George is so nice as well as a great teacher. He is super easy to talk to and never makes you feel like you're asking a stupid question. I feel I learned a lot from his class.
George is the best professor I've had at Pitt and I would highly recommend him to anyone! He's great at explaining and reiterating concepts in lecture, but he also does so immediately after class and in office hours as well. His tests are tricky and concept heavy, but he prepares you well for whats to come in Orgo 2. Do the practice problems/tests!
George truly cares about his students and does everything in his power to help you understand the material. Ochem 2 sucks but he makes the class much more enjoyable than I anticipated.
Excellent guy!! I have never enjoyed learning ochem this much before! Truly one of the best professors ive ever had. Helped me look at ochem from an entirely different perspective . His class is based on conceptual understanding of ochem, as long as you completely understand the material youre doing , you will do great!
my favorite class at pitt so far. Ochem is hard for any teacher but George explains everything so well. He expects you to work but that really is any ochem class out there. Participation in his class really matters. It's not for a grade but it definitely helps to be comfortable with him and it helps with the learning process.
By far best professor at Pitt. That's all there is to say.
Ochem is miserable but George made me love it. This class is hard but taking it with will make it so much better. He learned almost the entire lecture hall's name within a week and would talk to students like we are real people, which is refreshing. Easy to talk to and will help you out if you truly show you put effort into the class
By far best organic professor. Explains the material very very well and gives clear examples and notes.
By far, the best Pitt has to offer in terms of chemistry and a great person to boot.
Its ochem, its gonna be hard so you might as well have a prof who takes the time to learn his students names and sits down with them if they need help. Youll need to go to lecture and recitation, and reference the textbook at times. His exams are harder than other profs but he prepares you well if youre willing to do the work.
George is by far the best professor at Pitt. Going into OChem, I was absolutely dreading it, but he made it one of my favorite classes I've taken. He's so sweet and genuinely cares for his students. His tests are very difficult, but he prepares you well for them. Definitely take George!!
George is the most wonderful professor at pitt. If you have the opportunity to take him for ochem 1 you ABSOLUTLEY should, his exams are challenging but its worth it because You will learn more in this class than any other class at pitt and you will be better prepared for ochem 2 and for the mcat than you could ever imagine
Ochem is a piece of work but George explains the material clearly and thoroughly. Truly an amazing guy who, even though he grades solely based on exam scores, takes improvement and effort into account. Visit him and ask questions. If he recognizes you're putting maximum effort into his class, he might give your final grade a boost.
George-most wonderful human and most engaging professor at Pitt. However, if you really just need to make a good grade, there are definitely "easier" professors for that, though O chem at Pitt is hard no matter who you take. Exams are hard, but TA hours help a lot. If you take another prof, sit in on George's lectures for clarification.
George is one of the nicest professors I've had. He's accessible at office hours and doesn't believe in bad questions. His exams are extremely hard. If you're trying to boost your GPA I wouldn't take him. Getting an A is difficult. However, if you're willing to put in the work (which is a lot) then you will learn a lot.
Let me start by saying that George Bandik is by far the best professor that Pitt's chem department has. He is kind, caring, and ALWAYS willing to help. HOWEVER, he used to write MCAT questions and is VERY theoretically heavy in preparation for a med career and OChem 2. IF YOU'RE AN AVERAGE/STRUGGLING STUDENT, DO NOT TAKE HIM.
George is flat out the best professor ever. He made me love chemistry enough to pick it up as a double major and take honors organic lab this coming semester. Orgo is naturally hard but he will help you if you ask for it. Definitely take his class if you can.
Bandik is one of the best professors I've had at Pitt through my years. That being said, his tests are made specifically to try to trick you. You need to memorize (even though he says ochem is not memorization) every minute detail or you'll get a C at best. I learned A LOT from Bandik, but his tests are awful.
George is the best professor in the entire chemistry department, if not the best in any science class at pitt. I learned more from George than any other professor ive had. His tests are tough but you learn so much more in his ochem classes than any other teacher. If you want an easy A take someone else, but if you want to truly learn ochem take him
George is amazing. He really knows how to explain every concept and is amazing at engaging the class everyday. He wants us all to truly understand ochem. That being said, no matter how hard you study it seems that his exams are still extremely difficult. If you want to work for your grade, take him. For an easy A, take someone else
Clear teaching and very respectful!
By far one of the best professors I've ever had. Took the time to learn my name in a class of 120+ students, answered questions respectfully and thoroughly, explained the material in a very detailed manner, and was just all-around great at teaching. Highly recommend.
George is actually one of the best professors I've ever had. I took Ochem 1 two times because I couldn't grasp the concepts. George's lectures actually helped me figure it out. He really wants you to succeed and will help in any way possible. If I had any other professor for Ochem 2, I think I'd still be hopeless. He's retiring so TAKE HIM NOW
George is definitely the best prof in the chemistry department. His class is easy to understand because he explains everything very clearly. His test is difficult but fair. Always pay 100% attention to what he is talking and do what he ask you to do, then you will be fine(at least not bad).
George is the best prof I've ever had in my life. No exaggerating. He is so charming, so friendly and gives excellent lectures! Don't even hesitate if he is available, take him!
George is an incredible professor, he is personable and very easy to get along with, and will make an effort to get to know every one of his students. His exams are really rough though, so get ready to WORK and go to as many peer review sessions as you can make it to.
George is really entertaining, friendly, and makes a genuine effort to get to know all of his students. His exams are extremely difficult, & your entire grade is based solely on exams because there are no homework, lab, or participation points. His course is NOT an easy A compared to other Ochem profs, but you'll probably enjoy getting to know him.
George is hands down the greatest professor/teacher I have ever had. His class is definitely tougher than the other sections, but he only does that to challenge you to your max not to be mean. He is so easy to talk to in office hours I'd highly recommend going to him. I have never learned so much in a class before. Class is hard A, but is doable.
George is the most amazing professor ever! Please take him. Just do it. He actually made MCAT questions and teaches at a higher level. DONT BUY THE BOOK! Go to MANY ta reviews and get good problems from them. George is so nice. He makes you feel comfortable. However, you must study 20+ hours for each exam. Hes the definitive choice for premeds.
George is the best professor for ochem. I was scared this class would be hard, but George made it really easy. Getting a B isnt hard at all with the curve and an A is easily doable if you just review 4 days ahead of time. Try to get as many old sample problems as possible, memorize a lot, and youll be fine.
George is an amazing guy. Definitely a very hard class. If you want an easy grade do NOT take him. If you want to be challenged and potentially prepped more for ochem 2, then take him. Love him to death though.
Take the honors organic lab: research exploration. It's the only lab course at Pitt where you actually get to do real research (unlike bio "research" labs) and it counts towards to the orgo lab requirement. You get to write your own proposal, and get to do formal research reports. A lot more work than standard lab, but really fun!
He takes the concepts of organic chemistry, especially reaction-heavy ochem 2, and makes them very clear through his great lecture style. Def get to know him and go to his office. Do all of the problems and practice exams. Yes, the class is all exams, but if you beat the curve by 20% each time you should be in the A range easily. Amazing lecturer
Great guy, but doesn't mean much when it's hard to learn from. Doesn't use any form of technology, grades are only exam based, and boy are those exams the hardest exams in the entire undergrad department.
Best teacher there is but in hindsight TBH Id take another prof and just sit in on his lectures. I know many high GPA kids who got C's w/ him his tests requires you to be able to think a certain way not all can hard work alone isnt enough. Inflated class avg due to how he attracts top students. ANY prof will prep you enough for ochem2 not just him
Best professor without a doubt. No other professor comes close. But really George? Ethyl tosylate? ...
George has a special place in my heart as the best lecturer in the college. Exams were the hardest I have ever taken, but his lectures prepare you for it as he is always accessible. He's very old-fashioned and I feel it complements his teaching style well. <3
Lowest grade I've ever gotten in college came from this class ("Honors failing"). This class requires that you build your schedule around it. You gotta break up with your girlfriend. You gotta give away your cat. Throw out your phone. Call your mom, tell her you're going off the grid. You gotta bring a pillow to Hillman. You gotta take George.
George is both the best and hardest professor I've ever had. This is the first non-A I've received in college, but I would do every daylong in Hillman again. Go to class and do every practice exam you can to do your best in this class. George is the happiest, most caring and interesting professor you will ever have. Please take him if you can.
I love this man to death. He is a real sweetheart and one of the best professors I have ever had. He is really difficult, but you learn a ton. He makes you work for your grades, and you have to put a ton of work outside of class. You have to really know the information for the 3 exams and the final which are the one things graded for the class.
George is an amazing professor! However, his class is probably the most difficult section of Ochem. If you are taking his class only for the grade and not to learn organic chem, I would suggest another section. But, if you are ready to work hard and can afford a lower grade, George is the best! Get to know him, he's super nice!
Amazing lectures + incredibly likable person. You'll learn a lot, but you have to keep going to class to keep up. If you do little by little studying, it's easy to understand his lectures and prepare for his exams. 3 midterms + 1 final. No need for textbook, just go to 2-3 TA review sessions to get practice problems *DO PREVIOUS EXAMS to practice!*
Literally the best professor I have had in my entire life! You need to WORK his class is so hard but it is worth it he cares so much about his students. If you go to peer sessions, attend every class and recitation you can succeed. Warning though if you are looking for an easy A this is not your class.
George Bandik is the most amazing professor at Pitt, there is truly NO ONE LIKE HIM. The material is difficult but he is such a great lecturer that by the end of the semester you can step back and realize just how much you had learned. Enjoy every single minute in his class and take full advantage of all the resources offered. 1st row is the best<3
The best professor I have ever had. George has so much passion for organic chemistry and truly loves teaching his students. This class will kick you in the butt and make your brain hurt, but at the end you've learned so much more than you think. Organic chemistry is not meant to be easy but George made it fun and honestly made me love it. Best ever
Love this man. Didn't take him but is so personable and even helped me despite not being in his class. Great person to build a relationship with and very approachable
George is an absolute gem! He explains all concepts thoroughly and deeply cares about his students and their well-being. However, don't let the first exam trick you into thinking this class is easy--IT IS NOT. Do the practice problems. Go to peer sessions. Go to office hours. Absolute must take for orgo 1 for pre-health students!
George is an extremely personable and knowledgeable professor, and you will learn the most out of him than anyone else in the Chem department. But jeez those are the hardest exams I've ever taken in my 3 years of undergrad. He really makes you work for it. However, ochem 2 with a different prof was a breeze because he prepared us so well.
Absolute worst professor ever taken at Pitt. I hated every moment I was in his class, but loved Chem 2 with another professor. He ruined a subject I used to love. Rude. Told half the class they shouldn't be doctors. Unavailable during office hours.
George is hands down the best teacher I have had at Pitt. But honestly, if you are not planning on taking the MCAT or DAT I would find another O-Chem 2 class to join, it is an extremely difficult course. However, if you are seriously thinking about taking these exams his class will prepare you well for the next step in your academic career.
George is the best best best best (best of the best) prof I've met at Pitt. I am not a chemistry person but I learned a lot from him. He is very hilarious and explained every single detail really well. Exams are hard but reasonable. He doesn't try to trick you and everything is taught and reviewed.
George is the best professor I've ever had. Exams are difficult but fair. He is extremely good at explaining difficult concepts and creates an environment that welcomes questions and curiosity. Always go to lecture + UTA sessions and participate - wrong answers are expected and stupid questions don't exist in his class.
George has honestly instilled in me a profound appreciation for Organic Chemistry. I went into this class hating Gen Chem, but George's engaged lecture style classes (even over Zoom) and his genuine care for all of his students really motivated me to do well and study hard for his exams. I found his exams to be very fair though, not too hard.
Go to the UTU session every week and before each exam do all of the practice exams on google drive. Best lecturer at Pitt. George is a really nice guy. He makes sure you actually understand things. Class averages are in the high Cs so don't count on a curve like other classes. Probably the most difficult prof, but if you ask for help you'll get it.
The best teacher I've had here at Pitt. He is such a funny, excitable, loving guy. 6/5 rating if that was possible. If you don't watch his lectures and do practice problems, you will not pass. There's a ton of opportunities to get extra help though. He stayed after class almost every day to answer questions and recitations are for extra help too.
Honestly one of the best professors. I normally don't like participating in class, but this was the one where I actually was interested in. He also gets to know a handful of students really well. Tests were not bad for me, especially if you went to UTU sessions (I went to 2 per week) and just practiced. Really fleshes out the concept so you know it
This man is the greatest teacher, lecturer and person I've ever met. If you have to take Orgo 1 or 2, do everything in your power to take this man. Tests are hard but he makes orgo so much more about understanding than memorization.
OChem is hard no matter what teacher you have. George made the class bearable with his hilarious personality and upbeat attitude. He really knows what he's talking about and sincerely wants all of his students to as well. Exams are difficult, but not impossible. Do as many practice problems as you can and you'll be fine. Good luck!
George is a really fun and kind person, but his class is incredibly difficult. This semester in particular he made it harder because his class was all honors students. He teaches concepts very well and does a great job explaining such a hard subject, but you have to study really hard to do well. Don't take him if you aren't ready to put in the work
This class was THE hardest class I have taken so far, but it was so worth it. George is amazing in lectures and you will learn so much from taking the class. Study really hard, do a lot of practice, and stay after class to ask questions. Don't take this class if you only care about what grade you get and not how much you learn.
George is the best lecturer Ive ever had. His exams are very difficult and make up your entire grade but you can prepare with textbook problems the many practice exams available from the UTAs. Such a caring and supportive teacher but not accessible via email. Attend his classes and get to know him, hes hilarious!
I LOVE George. I have never worked harder in my life for a class but he really ensures that you leave this class actually understanding the material. This year esp was hard because our class was all honors student, but he's such an amazing teacher and person. He's extremely accessible for extra help and never makes anyone feel bad about asking
George is amazing and I learned so much. I achieved a great understanding of the material and feel very prepared for ochem 2. However, I definitely think my grade would have been higher if I took a different professor since George barely curved. But grades aren't always the most important thing; I'm glad I learned a lot.
Amazing, lovely person but the tests are incredibly brutal. He doesn't use email which means you have to show up in person to get any questions answered.
He cares about the wellbeing of his students and will make sure topics click. Tests are probably the most difficult in the department; however, if you are interested in actually learning about why behind OCHEM and not just memorizing reagents/products, take this class. If you want to take the MCAT/DAT in the future, you will be very well prepared.
George is very nice and funny, but his tests KILL. He really wants the students to understand what is going on in the class because he cares. The tests are the only part of your grade and they are extremely hard (usually more than 10 pages long). He doesn't curve much either.
literally the best. he loves his job and loves his students. his tests are crazy tho. but that is the trade off for a really good professor. even though ive been in hell in this class bc its so hard, i would take him again because he just loves his job and teaching and it makes it a lot easier to learn
I have lost my faith in ratemyprof. Bandik claims that he is about the learning not the testing, YET he cannot provide his student with a general outline of the class even though students have expressed it would be helpful. His lectures are engaging, but messy. He never clarifies what the purpose of the lecture is and just blabs for 50 minutes.
Ochem is by no means easy, but George made it feel logical. You need to study literally every day to keep up. The exams are brutal and you need to do as many past exams and textbook problems as you can (he will ask abt little details he never talked about in class and it will be your fault). George never makes you feel stupid for asking questions.
George is a great teacher. He loosely follows the textbook, but lectures the way that he wants. He isn't accessible outside of class and has favorites in the class. You HAVE to go to lectures and recitation and do as many practice problems and past exams to do well. Joechem was also helpful. The exams are very difficult and the only grades.
George is a fantastic lecturer and I learned a lot, but I don't think his exams were totally fair. He'll test material that he claimed we knew...we didn't. He isn't transparent about his grading scale. Go to peer sessions, do past exams, ask questions, and study hard! While I'm prepared for OChem 2, I suffered significant damage from this class.
This is the worst class I've taken at Pitt. He's great at explaining the material but his tests are insane, and your entire grade is based on them. Final is 40% of your grade which is ridiculous to me. You learn a lot but it was at the expense of my mental health and you literally have no idea what you have until your final grade is posted.
George is a great person. Available in his office all the time and offers great help, but nothing will prepare you for his exams. I developed so much anxiety from these and I am not sure I will ever take an exam the same. If you think you know the information, you probably don't. Do the homework and all of the practice exams you can find.
George is truly a gem of a human being, but I've never fought harder in a class to still not get the grade I wanted. If I put even the slightest bit of the work I put into his class with any other prof, I would've gotten an A. Studied 40+ hours for each exam to eh grades. Amazing (!!) prof but proceed w/ caution. Prepares you very well for OChem 2.
Excellent lecturer but I have never worked so hard to get a mediocre grade before. Definitely prepares you well for Orgo II. Go to your TAs cause they have tons of practice that saved me every single exam. Take him if you want to learn, but be prepared to work your ass off.
George is AMAZING! Although other people say he is a difficult teacher, I believe that his teaching is on par with the difficulty of his exams. All you need to do is go over your notes, do a lot of practice, and there is a generous curve at the end. Everything George does is laid out for you, just make sure you utilize your resources!
George is absolutely amazing, would definitely recommend!! Clearly passionate about helping students learn and makes an effort to know everyone. Exams are definitely challenging and his grading system is kind of terrible (only graded by 4 exam scores, no drops) but his lectures are comprehensive, easy to understand, and he gives practice exams.
George is the best professor I have period. He is so caring and so knowledgeable. His lectures are very conversational and are great for asking questions. He is very test-heavy but prepares you well. There are also student-led peer sessions that are great for extra help.
It's hard, but nothing impossible. There are so many resources out there to help you and George really is a gem of a person. Orgo is hard no matter what, but George makes it manegable. The exams are no easy thing, but entirely possible to do well on if you put in the work. He isn't out to get you, he just really wants you to learn. Love him.
George is the most down-to-earth professor I've ever had! However, his exams were actually insane and the questions on exams were often way beyond what he would talk about in lecture. Also, his class is filled with a bunch of smart honors kids who raise the average crazy high (like 75-77%) so you can't count on a curve.
George is one of the sweetest professors I've ever met. He cares about his students SO much. However, you are only graded by 4 exams, no drops, no other assignments to cushion your grade, and your class probably has all the honors kids in it, so no curve. I'm generally a straight A student, but I'm honestly not sure if I even passed the class.
Best professor I've ever had. Knowledgeable, kind, funny, and engaging. He stays after class almost every time to answer Q's. Graded by four exams, but they are fair, although difficult. You have to do practice problems, past exams, and go to TA sessions and you will succeed. Prepares super well for OCHEM2, and he tries to learn everyones' names.
George is a phenomenal and knowledgeable professor. I always had fun in class despite the hard material. His exams are very difficult though as he wants to test your knowledge on the small but important things. I think my grade does not reflect my actual knowledge of the material, but you can always talk to him about your concerns.
George is an absolute angel and without a doubt the best lecturer I've ever had. His class PUSHED me to do my absolute best and I was so happy when I got good results. I've learned more in this class than I've ever learned in my life, but it was extremely difficult and at times so stressful. DO NOT take this class with a heavy courseload like I did
as much as i love george this class was actually insane. he really does do a great job of lecturing and made me fall in love with chemistry even more. but i genuinely believe my C does not accurately depict how hard I worked or my knowledge. while i loved him & the class and i learned a TON, beware. dont take w other hard classes (i took w calc 2).
George is the best! He made learning the subject fun and pushed me to do my best and it showed through my progress in exams. However, I feel that my grade does not accurately depict my knowledge as there is no curve and no other assignments to cushion the grade. He is always accessible outside of class and so so nice.
George is a fantastic and caring. He is always willing to explain things but doesn't use any sort of technology, so you have to take notes. He exams are quite fair and averages this semester were high. I learned a lot and had a great time in the class. Downside is that the class likely filled by tryhards, so a lot of effort is needed to be average
George is an amazing person and an even better teacher. He is very personable and cares about each of his students. Lecture is very important and you will fall behind if you do not attend. Exams carry a lot of weight but are definitely manageable if you put the effort in. Be sure to ask questions and practice problems.
i loved george, but i would not take him again. it felt like no matter how hard i tried, i still couldn't do well. lectures were not recorded and nothing supplemental was posted on canvas. would sometimes refer to the book but the book was NOT on canvas. he is a great person and gives good lectures regardless. ik im better off for ochem 2 but dang.
George as a teacher is like the devil and angel on both your shoulders. On one hand, George is an AMAZING person and great lecturer. On the other hand, his tests are crazy-challenging and some questions are so weird and confusing it feels like he didn't teach the topic the question is on. Overall, brutal class but great person. Be ready to grind
George is the best professor I've had at Pitt. He is passionate about orgo and he cares about his students a lot. I didn't do great on the exams, but for the final I did all the practice exams and did well so highly recommend doing the same. One rule: if you get A-/A on the final, you end with that grade in the course (no matter how you did before)
I love George. He definitely prepares you for the MCAT but if you want to be able to save your gpa, take a different ochem professor. Text is referred to but not needed. He is my favorite professor in the chem department apart from Tim Tseng. If I took a diff ochem 1 professor with what I learned from George, would have gotten an A.
George is one of the most caring, inspirational people I have ever met. However, his exams were so difficult and his expectations were so unreasonable that I nearly dropped the chem major because of his course. No matter how hard I tried, how many hours upon hours I studied and how much I burned myself out, I could never get above a 50% on an exam
A fantastic professor who truly cares about his students. Additionally, he makes sure all questions are answered during his lectures. The amount of examples and practice provided has helped so much. As this is a 6-week summer course, he makes it so easy for me to pay attention during the nearly 2-hour long lectures.
Professor George is passionate about the material and cares about student success. Exams are challenging but doable with consistent effort. unstuckstudy AI was a huge help for practice problems and exam prep.
I'll be honest: George's ratings are inflated due to his personality. He's a fantastic person—caring, fun, and loving! But he is a horrible educator/test maker. He preps well for OChem2 and MCAT but doesn't prep well for his exam, lol. He is way too focused on connecting things to the real world instead of giving students actual exam practice.
George is really nice as a person, matter of fact hes a great guy! Now his exams on the otherhand... want to survive: JOeChem(buy the premium if you can), Organic Chemistry tutor, TEXTBOOK PROBLEMS I guarantee if you study 2 weeks in advance using this stuff you will get at least a B. This class is HARD, George doesn't cover all exam material.
I'm a bio major and I have honestly hated chemistry with a burning passion until this class. Thanks to George OChem has quickly become one of my favorite subjects! He is so entertaining to listen to and the way he explains difficult concepts makes so much sense! Your grade is 60% exams 40% but if you put in the effort they are manageable!
George is a good guy. But his exam 2,3 and final are wayyyyy too harsh. It makes no sense. Also final is the only exam that really matters get a B on final but get As on everything else you'll get a B+. Use joechem/textbook for practice his supplemental material is terrible. I recommend other professors if you aren't a good test taker!
Let me say one thing: Don't take George if you like to remain a normal human being. This dudes' exams are by far the worst in the department, and it isn't even close. I retook Orgo over the summer with another professor(Houston) and got not just an A but a 96% relative to my 70.8 in Bandik. His ratings are inflated due to his personality!!
Organic Chemistry 1 with George Bandik was like a relentless war. Each lecture was a battle, each exam felt like storming Arasaka Tower in Cyberpunk 2077. The material was unforgiving, and no amount of preparation felt like enough. My B- was less a triumph and more surviving a brutal, unyielding battlefield.
Dr. Bandik is neither bad or an excellent professor. He's proficient at explaining and getting across lecture material, but his exams were some of the hardest things I have ever taken and I took orgo in highschool. Im revisiting this after my first exam in orgo 2 which was not bad cause George preps well, but he is a memory im glad to be done with.
Im writing this after retaking Orgo 1 and taking Orgo 2. I had George Fall of 23 and he was a nice guy but his exams were really bad I failed every single one, one of which I was the class low. I retook it with bell and I got an B+ cause bell was actually a fair exam proctor. I also later got an B in ochem 2, so I don't recommend George take bell!
Great lectures, George is accessible fantastic, and a great dude his exams can be difficult but so is all of the ORGO department he's really nice and well versed in the content also if you ask questions lectures can be super helpful take him
Dr. Bandik is a fantastic lecturer and dude but his exams are legit impossible his 2nd exam made me question whether or not I was even taking the same class as others due to how complex and theoretical it was. He gets Lowish averages but due to final there's no curve! Proceed with caution!!!
George is not what he used to be that is for certain. He frankly does not understand that every kid isn't a honors kid and makes his exams impossible. I recommend using lecture as an intro to the topic you need to look videos up on. Wills notes were also a game changer USE THEM they are better than anything George gives. Exams are IMPOSSIBLE.
George is a fantastic lecturer but a horrible exam proctor. I love organic chemistry and knew I wanted to be an organic chemist ever since I took it freshmen year of highschool, so I knew the material and was more than willing to put 20+ hours into studying it each week. But let me tell you even with my passion his exams are terrible and evil.
his exams are really unfair and he barely prepares you for them. he's good at teaching he just makes his exams wayyyy too complicated and it's kinda up to you to find practice probs as complicated as his exams. he's good if you want to take the MCAT, but if you're just trying to pass/need the class for your major, take a diff professor.
I'm sorry, but I have no idea why there are so many recent 1.0 ratings. He is PHENOMENAL and I mean it. Orgo is hard no matter who you take it with, and he cares so so much. If you attend lecture, go to peer sessions, and ask him questions when you're confused it will be fine. Exams are hard, obviously, but have NEVER been unfair with his curve.
George is hands down the best professor I've ever had. He makes it so easy to form a personal connection with him, and he truly cares about all of his students. His teaching style has been perfected, and he's still able to create exams to an optimal curve. If you have the option, take George.
George was great! Definitely a difficult class that took up hours to study for but it's worth it. George teaches with pre med/ pharm students in mind so he will definitely be helpful if you need to take the MCAT etc. George is caring and while his tests are hard i wouldn't say he was ever unfair.
George is a great man. However, if you do not have a good chemistry background, I would say avoid him like the plague. He starts lectures late while talking to people. But this makes it difficult to follow when he starts speeding up while drawing on the board. He doesn't use any sort of technology so if you want to ask a question, go to his office.
So kind and so intelligent. Gives plenty of background needed to really understand organic chemistry, but the exams were terrible and the only thing you are graded on. With the amount I learned, I believe I would've received an A in any other professor's class. A bunch of honors kids take him too so you have to work harder to stay in the average.
Always take notes. He's a great lecturer, get your money's worth. During my semester, if you got an A in his final exam, he would give you an A in the class. I did not get an A in the final, and I regret not trying. In his exams, always go the extra mile in explaining your points, even the basics, or else. I lost many points by being brief.
He's a really nice guy but don't be fooled because the exams are much harder than what he expects from you. Many people would get an A with any other professor than Dr. Bandik. Take Pete Bell if you can as I have heard it is not as bad as it seems.
George is an amazing professor. Attendance isn't mandatory; however, if you skip class, you will not pass. George bases the grade on four exams (three midterms worth 20% each and one final worth 40%). Peer sessions and practice problems are the best ways to study. Before each exam, George hosts a review session and hints at possible test problems.
George is a fantastic person and makes organic chemistry really interesting. However, this class is incredibly difficult. I've never tried so hard just to receive slightly above average grades. My main complaint is that there is no grade scale or any grading scheme posted ever, so you will never know your grade until final grades are posted.
George was super engaging and really tried to get to know everyone. His tests are very hard and require a lot of studying. The best way to study is doing practice exams, peer sessions, and going to him if you have questions. He definitely gets you to know the content super well but is a tougher grader than other professors.
George is hands down the best professor I've had at Pitt! His lectures are very engaging and give you a strong understanding of why things happen instead of having you memorize (great for MCAT/DAT prep). Organic chemistry is a hard course, so do practice exams, go to peer review sessions, and utilize his office hours. George is super helpful!
George was a pleasure to take and was accessible to meet outside and inside the classroom. While this was the hardest class I have taken, he was amazing at answering questions and with the textbook, his lectures, peer review, and the optional practice assignments. HIGHLY recommend you take him for Ochem just be prepared.
The GOAT. If you don't take him as a premed you're highkey trolling. Makes everything easy to understand. As long as you put in the time and effort, do ALL practice questions and practice tests, and go each week to UTA office hours (UTAs are goated), easy A imo. Also, buy the William Conroy textbook if possible (can use this and not read textbook).
George is a great person and is great at explaining orgo. He was very kind and I could tell he cares about his students. However, he goes very fast and only uses the chalkboard, also doesn't have a set grading scale (very competitive). He also often doesn't write down important words/definitions so it's important to review things with TA's.
George was and will be the best and most engaging professor I have ever had. His lectures, while intensive (it's orgo duh), are understandable and explain conceptual ideas clearly. He makes an effort to know and connect with every student in his huge classes. He truly wants you to succeed, but be prepared to think in ways you never have before.
George as a person is great! As a professor, not so much. His exam require a lot of prep I spent roughly 10-20 hours studying for each one over the course of 3 weeks, cramming is not an option. Also I basically taught myself every reaction pathway cause george really do enough fundamental problems. Hes hard but if you use conroy, joechem its doable
George was the first professor at Pitt that learned my name and I had multiple conversations with. His exams are extremely hard and are the only part of the grade and as someone who is an awful test taker his class made it difficult to do well. He curves the class at the end based on the class average. I knew I would pass just not with a good grade
I don't think people are being as honest on what it takes to pass Georges class. As he is the hardest ochem teacher, he purposefully will make exam 2 either easier or harder depending on how good or bad the last exam was. Hes a very sweet guy and can answer questions, but there's little room to recover from bad exams if u care about your grade.
George is an incredible professor but his class is EXTREMELY hard. You learn concepts really well but there is little in class practice and the exams are not like practice exams. Take with caution. Know that it is extremely extremely difficult to get an A in his class.
George is truly the best professor that I have ever had. His class is difficult, but he provides so many resources for you to succeed in his class. I highly recommend going to peer sessions, doing TA worksheets, and reading Will's notes. He's super accessible and takes time to know as many students as he can. If you can, take George for Orgo 1!
George's class is extremely extremely hard, BUT he is an amazing professor. His class is very old school- blackboard and chalk- no online slides. Your grade consists of 100% exams, with 40% being the final. I would take him again for Orgo 2 if I could! Go to the TA sessions and put in the work- you cannot study for the exams in one night.
George is a great guy and teacher, and is amazing for answering questions and clearing up confusion. however, because he has been doing this so long and is so passionate abt orgo he expects a lot of of you and therefore have really hard exams and grading. he is hilarious though and really wants to see his students succeed.
I literally prayed to die every night because of his exams
YOU WILL NOT SUCCEED IF YOU DON'T USE YOUR RESOURCES!! I do not exaggerate. Go to every lecture, take notes every time, go to blackboard time, pick a TA session and go every week, print out and do every practice worksheet on canvas, go to George's office hours, Will's notes are a god send. Despite that, George is the best professor I've ever taken.
George is the best professor I've ever had. He is kind and caring and explains hard concepts well. His tests are tough, require tons of work to do well on, and make up your entire grade, but there are so many resources to help you do well on them and he curves. Talk to him outside of class and GO TO PEER REVIEW SESSIONS (they will boost your grade)
George loves all of his students and wants them to succeed. Exams are 100% of your grade and are quite difficult compared to other professors' exams. You need to make use of ALL the resources you're given in order to do above average. There is also a little to no curve since this class is so competitive.
i woild not recommend taking george bandik unless you want to crash out before every exam! you will develop an amazing understanding of organic chemistry but it comes with a price. do not recommend!
Ignore the comment below that person is insane. George is the best professor I have had. He knew my name unlike the person below obviously. His exams are challenging, compared to the rest of the professor. To do well you have to use resources by going to office hours and peer review sessions.
so torn because i have that "passion but no talent" i really looked forward to his lectures every day but man were his tests tough. he makes his tests with it in mind that he is an insanely good professor, so they are very difficult. he is by far the best professor i've had and i have no doubt that ill excel in orgo 2 but this was a hard hit :(
honestly the best chem prof i've ever had. His exams are hard only cause he teaches so well. PLS take him if you can. go to lectures, office hours, blackboard and the peer review sessions TAKE ADVANTAGE OF RESOURCES!! its 100% exams but he gives an A/A- final grade if you get an A on the final exam he's sweet and genuinely wants students to succeed
Learning orgo really is like learning a new language and he gets that, which is why if you get an A on the final you get an A in the class, even if you failed the midterms. His lectures are incredible and you will definitely be very well prepared for Orgo 2 if you pass George's class. His exams are extremely difficult, though, so keep that in mind.
I would love to give George a 5 just because of how kind he is, but unfortunately the way his class is structured is horrible. Your grade is only based off of exams which are 10+ pages each with only 50 minutes to complete them. No one I spoke to in my class ever fully finished an exam. Super unfair and v high standards but he is a good lecturer.
Although this class is difficult, George is an amazing professor and his lectures are great. Even so, you have to be prepared to put in a ton of work because the class is only graded based on three exams and a final. He has a rule that if you get an A on the final you'll get an A or A- in the class no matter what your first three exam scores were.
George is a great teacher but you have to be dedicated outside of lecture or you will NOT be prepared for exams. Exams are very hard and are the only thing that make up your grade. His a/-a final grade rule saved me, didn't think he act went through w it but here we are. He's such a character and class is always fun.
George is an amazing professor who cares for all of his students and wants them to succeed. Lectures were interesting and prepares you well for exams. Peer sessions and office hours give you extra support. Exams weren't impossible but require application and understanding not just memorization. Best professor in the department and a must take.
george is incredible! however, his class was incredibly hard for me (obviously). the class is EXTREMELY competitive and curve is not great. his exams (3 midterms, 1 final) were incredibly hard imo. he is a great prof and offers a ton of resources that i wish i utilized more. i think i would have done sm better if i locked in
Literally the best professor I have ever had at Pitt. He does an amazing job teaching and explaining the concepts, but his exams were brutal compared to other professors. He really wants everyone to succeed and is always available to answer any questions. Use the resources wisely (peer review, office hours, blackboard, etc) in order to succeed!
Absolutely phenomenal professor. Explains difficult concepts very well. I Felt very seen by him since he likes to try and talk to as many people as he can and learn their names. Go to lecture and do all the practice problems and make sure you truly know the concepts not just the memorization. If George sees this I'm getting the tattoo btw.
GO TO CLASS AND PEER REVIEW SESSIONS! I only passed because of curve (I had a 65). Curve is whatever class average is, is highest C, a little above is a C+ and a little below his "range" which is about 10 percent is a C-. He teaches the material well so if you work with it you will understand it better than other sections tests are just so hard.
He was very sweet and funny but would often not tell you things and would tell you one thing then expect you to know the one exception. He has a policy that if you get an A on the final you get an A in the class which saved me. Go to peer review sessions and his office hours that's what helped the most you can do good if you really try.
LOVE HIM! His exams are significantly harder than other profs but he explains things so well. If you are pre health his class is a must, I understand orgo way better than ppl w/ other profs. Go to lecture and go to the same peer review session every week and you will be fine. He means it when he says you will get the grade you deserve. Ily George
Very difficult class. Professor Bandik is quite knowledgeable but simply going to lectures will not be enough. Many hours outside of class is necessary like going to TA sessions, practice exams. I had a membership called CramBetter for Organic Chemistry 1. The videos were super informative and really the cherry on top after dense in-class lectures.
Truly blessed to have taken Bandik this semester. His lectures are fantastic and he's a great guy. Grade is based on 4 tests including a final for 40% of your grade. Everything is graded on a curve so you won't know your grade until the end. You learn a lot in his class and I recommend you study hard, early and learn the concepts, don't memorize.
Beyond his renowned humor and charm, I appreciated George's logical explanations. While he taught only with chalk and the structure could feel loose at times, but online exercises and peer reviews were very helpful. The "orgo language" is challenging initially but becomes manageable once you learn the basics.
