He knows his stuffs very well
EXCELENT NOTES
He's good at teaching...but the stuff he teaches is quite hard...overall, he is the best compared to other finance profs.
He's a great teacher and one of the best profs I've had at SFU. Knows his stuff.
Great prof! Very good at actually TEACHING, rather than lecturing everyone to death. Best finance prof at SFU.
He's my favorite teacher
Excellent teacher
He's great in teaching. Even though the stuff he taught was not easy, he made it comprehensible. After taking Bus312 with him, I have decided to major in Finance.
He is the best prof I've ever known. However, still hope he could smile a little bit more; I was scared of asking him questions because of his poker face. :-)
Useful course with very very helpful practising quizzes. Numerical mistakes are not counted in exams and quizzes. Nice guy with a 'Bao Gong' face!!!
Waited a year for his BUS 312. It is worth it! Gonna wait another year for his bus413
Great prof. He really teaches you something. Knows his stuffs well. Helpful sample tests.
He is clear in everything he says, because he repeats the same sentence in three different ways so it sticks to your mind! Complicated concepts explained clearly. Helpful when approached with meaningful questions. Overall, best finance prof one can get.
Very helpful in answering your questions (only face-to-face since he doesn't reply emails). Explained concepts well (I liked how he repeated what he said a few times). Exams were fair - the structure was very similar to sample exams so you have to do them in order to do well.
Knows his material but does not know how to teach at all. All he does is regurgitate example after example, speeding through material like an auctioneer. When u ask him to slow down, he just looks at ur like ur retarded. First and only finance course I will ever take. Was looking fwd to it but cant see anyone wanting to major in finance after this
Take this course with any other prof but him. He is terrible. Constantly repeats himself, while explaining NOTHING..lectures are useless, pretty much have to teach yourself the material. No tutorials so the TA office hours are crowded and you can't get one on one help with anything. He makes the material much harder to learn than it actually is
he is good at teaching and knows his material well. however, u still have to do as many as problems from the text, sample midterm, quiz final as you can! cause thats the way you learn!
His a smart guy with lots of experience in teaching. However, he tends to go over things way too fast. You should pay attention all the time during the lecture because he writes on the overhead so fast and his notes are very unorganized.
This man LOVES to repeat himself and go over material way too fast. Underneath it all, he is very knowlegable but it's really difficult to follow him in class. Each lecture produces at least 3 or 4 double-sided pages of notes! Just be sure to take notes dilligently and to carefully review all assignments and posted quiz/midterm material.
this guy is horrendous, worst professor I've had in 5 years. He doesn't explain anything, his lectures, answers, material, and formulas are completely inconsistent, so he leads you different ways depending on if you use lec notes or his book. He won't use tutorials and office hours with the TA's are inefficient. boggles me he still teaches goZitron
Horrible prof. i was looking forward to this class but he ruined it. spends lecture going very quickly over the book (which he wrote). dont bother going to lecture b/c u wont learn nething since he goes over stuff too fast, just read the book at your own pace. valuable lecture time spent on easy and useless stuff but hard stuff is barely covered.
He's too smart teaching an intro level course...sometimes he assumes everyone knows what he's talking about but in fact we don't. Nice prof tho, the questions are straight forward, no tricky BS.
Very knowledgeable on his subject, however, he tends to go over his stuff too fast. I suggest that you do pre-read before going to his lecture. Exams are very straightforward. The trick to his open book test, is to come prepared by doing lots of practice and not to spend too much time looking for answers in the text.
His exam, midterm and guizes are very simialr to samples and assignments. However, you won't be able to do well on them if you don't do alot of pracitce questions. He seems to know the material very well but he goes over it way too fast. He should realize that he's been teaching the same thing for so many semesters while it is totally new for us.
this course requires a lot of work. thats why its 4 credits. the assignments are relevant to the exams. he talks quite fast though. and his writing is pretty bad too. he gives many practice questions. the assignments have answers and is only marked for effort.. that's a free 10% already
This has got to be the easiest Business course since BUEC 232. Open book and notes for quizzes/exams means that all you have to do is do and understand the practice quizzes/exams. Very clear explanations and notes. The course itself is mostly quantitative so if you're good at math, you should be fine.
He is a nice guy but not a good teacher. He talks tooooooooooooo fast in class and never pauses. The exams are not hard cuz you do exactly same things as the samples and assignments, but the course material is boring... I got an A but I hate this course.
I hoped that this class would provide me with some practical analysis tools that I could use but got none. I found that the class was completely impractical. He talks non-stop and it is hard to keep up with him. The assignments and exams were open book, but very hard. The only way to do well is dedicate every spare minute doing the practice tests.
A very nice prof and thorough teacher; however, the course is tough for those that do not have strong math skills. You can succeed though, you just have to dedicate a lot of time to the class. George is awesome though. He invited me into his office just to have a chat about the course and gave me chocolate!
This class is tough once you get to chapter 6...practice, practice, practice...because it's all open book
This class is tough once you get to chapter 6...practice, practice, practice...because it's all open book
He is the best professor in my entire life. He explained concepts clearly with excellent examples. He repeated what he said sometimes, but it helped you to remember it, and you will also know it is an important topic. He is way too nice to his students. Even if he is very smart, he always teaches and thinks from students' side. He is the prof that
horrible prf. wrote the text himself which doesnt help you at all. exams are tough.
Blazenko is one of the better finance profs. Be warned, this class is NOT easy. However, George is a great teacher with great insight and experience. I would take him for all my finance courses, if I could!
He knows his stuff, and most importantly has even written the textbook. His notes are sooo well organized, and even better he offers many many example exmas and quizes to help you out.
The fact that he wrote the textbook wasn't a good thing, as his in-class notes were usually just slight variations of what's in the text. He offers more detailed examples in class, but I would have liked to have had even more complex questions- showing us how to plug numbers into formulas doesn't help. Do TONS of past exam questions to do well!
Highly recommended. This course is all about theory and calculation coz it is a introductory course of finance, so don't expect too much practical stuff. chapter 6 in the key element of the whole semester, you will be tested 3 times about this . figuring out how to adjust those formulas in chapter 6 before the midterm will get you a A for sure!!!
Re-took class in Fall'08 w/ George instead of R.Z. Wow what a difference. George is completely by the book and explains everything very clearly. The key to doing well is understanding CH6 like the back of your hand. Study his examples, text Qs, and this samples. This is the ONLY way to do well. From D to A+, i'd say Blazenko is the way to go.
Best prof ever. So caring, so knowledgeable. Very thorough in delivery of course material. Always willing to help and clarify. Highly interested in material. Created course text and charged less than 25% of other Finance texts! Long live Dr. Blazenko!
Blazenko's experience clearly shines for this course. He provides you with all the practice questions you'll ever need (though it's your own responsibility to do them) and gives interesting applications to concepts in lecture. (btw, this course is an easy credit if you've taken ACMA 210 :p)
He made easy material so much harder to understand. His lectures are so confusing. Quizzes/Exams are open book and the TA marks so easily but WHY so many people still can't do well? The worst part is...when people are confused about the lecture, they will read textbook. But he wrote his own textbook, which is....arghh...
George is a good prof, he gives out very good notes. Exams are tricky though, you can solve the question very qucikly if you can see the "trick? he used otherwise you'll find yourself staring at the question and couldn't get anywhere! do a lot of pratice questions if you want to do well. By the way, anyone else find the final exam this term crazy?
His notes are good enough to explain the book, so you don't really need to read it since it's way lenthy anyways. Quizzes and midterm was easy, just do sample exam. Final I would say sucked because the ch 8 and 9 material he went over was limited. He examed us on more than he taught us. Practice questions for ch 8 and 9 were also not abundunt.
Best Prof ever.
Pretty hard exams. Everything is open book, but if you compare to his old exams, the new ones are a lot harder. Boring lectures. He wrote his own textbook - the solutions can seem pretty random because a lot are not updated accordingly. Hard if you're not strong in math like me.
The exams were pretty hard compared to the samples. The final was very tough considering the time limit and the amount of thinking required. He has immense knowledge about finance, so take it with him if you really want to learn finance.
Class is intense. Do the practice questions, and make sure you understand those, because the ones on his exams are way harder. He has "tricks" for each question. Each question is different.I found that his tricks confused me a lot and prevented me from really strengthening my foundation.
20-year's teaching experience. Examples are pretty old, but fundamental. If you do all the assignments and samples, you can get an A for sure.
Blazenko is a good professor. If you want to do well, sit in the front row, do all your assignments and do every question from the practice quizzes and exams...you should do fine if you follow that. he does put some tricks in his questions, and some times there is an easy way and a hard way to solve questions, chap 6 is most difficult.
Quizzes and midterm weren't that hard, but final is pretty tricky. But if you do all the practice questions and his old exam questions, you will do fine in his class.
I would not have gone into finance if he had not made it interesting for me. Note: In the first class I think he tries to make his class as boring as possible so people will drop his always full class.
Everything fell down to the final at which point he decided in the privacy of his office that he would screw everyone over.
For your sake, take it with a different professor. You can have it so much easier on yourself.
"Utter regret in taking it with Stalin-I mean, Blazenko," are too light of words to describe how I feel. His lectures are annoying, he repeats things, lays out the dumbest examples like: A=2 and B=3, then A+B=?. Sitting was never so painful. Listening has never been so useless.
Excellent Prof! the final exam was extremly difficult. However, his class will give a solid foundation to those who wants to major in finance. He gives real world application, I strongly recommand his class. But for those who think they will fly by without hardwork, then you are better off not taking his class.
It's quite obvious that George is very passionate with what he teaches. He's a nice guy - even providing the text online so you don't really have to buy it. If you take his class, be sure to DO THE WORK. There are tons of assignments, but they're actually necessary for you to do well. He provides A LOT of sample quizzes and test - do them all!
great and competent Finance Professor
Horrible. Uses his own textbook that has typos and mistakes all over the place, and also doesn't explain the material well at all. He even says he teaches his own formulas, not the ones financial planners actually use, ones from other textbooks. In class examples easy, exams ridiculously difficult! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
he is the perfect prof for BUS312. well.. the course requires lots of work, but in general the class doesn't do so good so ur grade will go up if you do all the assignment ( DO NOT COPY the answer) the exams is exactly the same, so you will do well.
Everyone tries to avoid taking 312 with George, and in the middle of the semester I even advised friends to try to take it with someone else if they could. But after reflecting on the semester, I realized that even though his exams are very tough, he's an amazing teacher and does a great job explaining himself. Tough exams? so what? IT'S CURVED!
This course is really easy...after MT, i hardly learned the materials at all. When I tried to do the sample finals, I even didn't know how to do most of the questions. But thanks George's sample finals and the solutions, I memorized and analyzed the last two ones deeply two days before the Final, finally I suprisingly ended this course with an A+.
He is very nice if you go to his office or email him with any questions. His notes are well orgranized, though his handwriting is bad. He gives A LOT OF practices to help you understand the concept and his exams are straightforward as long as you do all the questions. Highly recommend! :)
Easy course if you do the samples
Excellent prof. His notes are very helpful, and really complement the book he wrote himself. Do a lot of his sample tests, and you'll do fine on his exams. The book itself is excellent and should guide you through answering the samples. Overall, a very helpful course with reasonable difficulty.
Terrible finance prof. Don't bother to buy the textbook because it makes no sense and it's the same as the notes he gives in class, plus he posts the notes online on the class website. Uses different equations and symbols than actually used in finance so if that's your concentration, don't take it with this guy.
Go to class and just copy the notes, don't expect to understand it right away as you will be able to learn what you will need in the assignments. He will give you lots of practices (including MT's and Finals). Do as much as you can and start from the most recent ones. Easy A
Great Prof! Very nice!
Excellent Prof! Easy A+
He is a good prof overall, clear and helpful. It'll be better if he can explain to us how to get those formulas rather than tell us to memorize them.
Class is so do-able but don't fall behind. It's all open book, but just memorizing is often not enough. Make sure to understand the concepts. Blazenko is nice guy but moves very fast in class...don't buy textbook as he offers it free online. Overall, easy class but KEEP UP WITH WORK..final was brutal but its scaled
George is a genuinely nice guy but I feel that he begins his finance class at a level that is too difficult for an intro class. I think he does this simply because he's been teaching so long. He's pretty funny and gives tons of example exams for both the midterm and final so make sure you do them! Exams are open-book but still difficult.
Dr. Blazenko is very nice, and very helpful if you see him in office hours. TAs are hit and miss, there was one really good TA that explained concepts clearly. This class is tough, try to do well on the midterm - you will probably fail the final. But everything's curved so just make sure to do well on everything else.
This course is one of the hardest core courses ive ever taken! make sure u do well in midterm and assignment because the final is a killer! good overall
You might not get used to his rather monotone voice at first, but he gets better and better throughout the course. He is quite an amusing prof and is very helpful during office hours. He provides lots of sample exams - do enough of them until you understand the patterns and then you can get a very good grade in this course.
His lectures can be very boring and most of the time you will class confused. The book did not do much for me because it's written in the same way as his lectures are structured. What got me an A+ in the course is by doing ALL of the sample questions he posted online.
I hate finance, but i study hard. MT got below average by ~12%, but probably aced my final and ended up with an A- (he will scale your grade up if your final percentage is 10% more than your mt percentage!!) Note: samples are way easier than the actual exams
Kept on repeating himself, had no respect to students, useless book, didnt explain why equations are the way they are, makes it hard to understand and to use.
George is a nice guy & I like the way the class is structured. Like any math class; practice makes perfect. Upon reflection, the stuff taught is really interesting, it's just unfortunate that such a broad discipline is crammed into 13 weeks. Makes it hard to really understand the material cause you just spend your time doing a million calculations
knowledgeable and funny prof! One of my favorite profs.Do as many quiz/exam samples as you can,and you will do well.
If you have a poor attention span DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Repeats things on average 7x we counted but at least things are clear. Open book exams. You will however have a high chance of falling asleep in lecture.
George is one my favorite profs at SFU. Seriously. If he's teaching a finance course that you need TAKE IT WITH HIM. There are no surprises on his exams and quizzes even though they are a bit tougher than the practice. This was one of the classes where I actually liked going to lectures (and we all know those are hard to come by)
Smart prof, but his exams are very difficult. His notes not organized as you need to discover the many formulas by yourself from practice exams and he can always find a way to trick you. Class average is very high (half from retakes) comparing to its difficulty. I am usually above average in all my classes if I effort in, but not this class.
This guy, and this class, is simply AWESOME! if you like finance, or are interested in finance, this class is definitely the class for you. He also provides every single test he's ever given to help you prepare for tests and quizzes (2 quizzes a Mid and a Final). This does not mean the class is easy, you have to work hard, but an A+ is possible!!!!
George is a good teacher I would recommend. He posts all of his past quizzes, midterms, and final exams on his course website. Exams are OPEN BOOKNOTES. My advice is PRACTICE; do all of his most recent sample quizzesmidterms and final exams because his exams will be similar to that. STUDY HARD for the final because it is tricky.
I had a wonderful learning experience in the semester of fall 2014. Professor Blazenko is very inspirational and encouraged students a lot. Under his encouragement, I did very well on this course. I am preparing to apply his TA in the future semesters.
Never take bus 312 with him! His lectures are easy and pretty clear, but his exams are killing! Especially the final! Make sure to solve all of his samples quizes but do not expect them to be helpful 100%. Most likely he will take the beginning of the sample questions and then mix them to make them harder. Used logarithms to solve his final.
good prof, knows his stuff but his lectures are tough to get through, material is challenging read it before hand so you can ask questions to claify
His lectures are sometimes confusing and hard to understand, so is his handwriting, but still, I would highly recommend you to not skip any lecture. His quizs and mid-term are easy and pretty much the same with the past exams samples he gave you before the exams. However, the final is a lot harder and is a bit different from the samples. Study Hard
A bit lazy and uninterested in helping outside of class. Quizzes and midterm are fair but the final is MAGNITUDES more difficult. Exams are open book and he provides past samples, but even that won't help much for the final. He makes each one more difficult than the previous semester because of his own policies.
I found his lectures extremely hard to get through. Theres so much material so dont fall behind. The final was (imo) so much harder than previous exams. Prepare lots for the final. It was crazy. TAs are super helpful so go to them! Just do every single practice he gives you, itll help you so much. The average is so high...
The course itself covers A LOT of stuff and the lectures always go the full 2 hours. The lectures go at a fast pace but George does what he can to make the content as clear as possible. He does give you a lot of resources online to help you study, but the midterm and final are real tough.
I really enjoyed Prof. Blazenko's class. His teaching style i boring at first but gets better. Although exams were difficult, especially the final exam, he gives you all the resources to succeed but its up to you whether or not you want to use them. If you have questions talk to him during office hours, he actually very friendly and very helpful.
Professor Blazenko is so awesome. I loved this class with him because I really feel that I have learned a lot. He is approachable for help or just to chat casually. Great person and I am glad I was able to take Finance with him.
miss class u'llbe done. 1 week missing means u've to work hard.
Not very helpful, rude, and lectures are basically word-for-word same as the textbook
This course is an introductory course for finance so it's not hard and it's probably the easiest one to get an A+ in beedie. His lecture is boring but solid, remember to do all his past practices and you'll be fine.
Awesome professor. No need to buy textbooks. He will give you! I will take this professors' classes again.
Nice prof but extremely difficult. He is much much harder than Fred, assignments take hours, lectures give you headaches he repeats himself so often. I've taken CFA level 1 and his class is more difficult (and useless) IMO
Tip: Try to do as many past quizzes/midterms as possible (he posts all of them online) and ace them. They're way easier than the final, and you need that cushion to save you from that horrible final exam.
George is a great guy to learn finance from. The earlier problems with his course being hard to follow have been mostly resolved by his new video examples. If you work hard you will have a clicking moment where the broad contents of the course come together. Midterm is time intensive - Get fast at samples. Final tests understanding over mechanics.
Always repeat himslef unnecessarily. Assignments require knowledge ahead of lecture so you are basically forced to go see the TA. A little jumpy on the lecture, skip some steps.
It's a tough class. George's lectures run dry but his notes from these lectures will appear on the qualitative portion of the final. Tons of resources / office hours for you to succeed, but does require consistent effort throughout the semester. MT and quizzes are standard. Final is quite tough. Practice practice practice.
George is a great prof who really sets his students up for success, provided they work hard. All his past tests are posted to study off and his weekly assignments ensure you keep up. Lectures are recorded and posted as well. If you keep on on material and practice (lots) you can do really well.
A riveting orator and a fascinating man. Blazenko's ability to inspire a class frequently reduces the students to tears of joy. A forewarning: you will discover parts of yourself that you never knew existed in this class. Be open to knew financial concepts, because George Blazenko will inevitably blow your mind.
You can do well, if you put in a lot of work. A lot. Not recommended.
On the plus side, you don't have to go to the lectures to pass the course. Just watch the videos. You will do well until you get to the finals. When that comes, good luck.
George is truly a nice guy that wants his students to succeed, he gives you everything you need to do well given you are willing to put in the work. You are NOT going to do well passively going through his class. I worked hard and studied endlessly and still found the course difficult. That being said, the average is typically below 65%.
George is an extremely fair professor, as he provides ample practice material to prepare for quizzes and exams. Additionally, he provides step-by-step video solutions to homework and practice problems. This style of teaching rewards students who are willing to put the time and effort into the course. He is passionate about finance and it shows.
You really have to work hard and understand how to do the questions by practicing a lot. Sample quizzes & midterms were very similar to the actual ones. I got decently above average for both. The final was tougher but I did about 8 practice finals and ended up doing fine in the course. Just work hard and make good formula/cheat sheets for exams.
Live streams lectures and providers past tests for practice. Makes you work for it but youll learn a lot. Would recommend.
Amazing Prof who will go above and beyond if you go to office hours and show interest. I started a business later and he was willing to be part of the advising team to help us do well!
George is the best prof I've had at SFU. He gives you every resource you need to be successful, and his passion for finance shows. There's might be easier profs out there, but if you're a finance major, definitely take this class with George as it will prepare you well for 315.
Blazenko is amazing. He gives you all of his past exams and quizzes, and there is no need to buy a textbook. For the midterm and quizzes, practicing old exams and quizzes is enough. Also, try to pace yourself for the exams, otherwise, you will not finish writing. Lastly, ask your TAs for help if needed, and do not fall behind!
Just work on past exams you will be ok. Solutions are accessible on homework. Dont need to go to classes since all lectures are recorded.
Blazenko is an amazing prof. However, the material from the midterm to the final seemed a bit rushed. He is super funny.
Do the sample Midterm and Quiz. The sample is similar to the actual one. Cheating sheets are allowed. However, the final is really hard and it is totally different from the sample. Assignments are easy to get the mark. Try to get a higher mark as possible before the final.
George is super smart but not so good at teaching. He rambles so much and on top of that he's got a grandpa voice that makes you want to fall asleep. However, he posts all his past exams on his website which was really helpful in studying. Aim for the highest grade u can get before the final to cushion the damage
He will let you know directly how to do good in his class with all the material provided. He provides all of his past quizzes/midterms/finals on his website, open book/note, be prepare to practice hard and you will get what you deserve. Everything is given to you and the rest is up to you if you work hard. TAs are super helpful too
