Talks fast, but always makes it cleat as to what's important. Great prof, Highly recommended.
This guy is hilarious. A great, well rounded professor. His explanations are all encompassing yet articulate. If you have a chance, Get this Professor!!
Great prof! Really funny and makes the course content interesting. Talks kinda fast at times but if you get the main ideas down you can look into them with more detail later in the textbook. Attending class isn't absolutely necessary, but it helps a lot and was interesting. Overall great guy, would definitely recommend!
Really good prof! Keeps his lectures really funny and interesting - which can be hard sometimes with a history class. He is really helpful and marks quite fairly. You can tell he knows his stuff and loves teaching it. Definitely recommend him!
Amazing Professor! Class attendance is mandatory, he uses comedy in his lectres and has a really high energy level. Really helpful with students, I've taken two of his classes and absolutely loved them both
Love him! He is an amazing prof for History! I hated History before I took this class and only took it for electives, now I'm inlove with World History! He takes his time to explain concepts and makes jokes to keep one engaged and laughing! Plus he's good looking too! :D
great teacher really nice and very helpful, also very understanding if you are not able to get your paper in on time for a good reason. the one minus with him is that he marks quite hard on his essay's so if your not a great essay writer his class may be hard
Wasn't clear from the beginning as to when essays were due. Compared majority of what he was teaching to movies or tv shows he was currently interested in and would use those analogies to explain history. Flew through 1st 1/2 of material so he could teach what he actually liked--the 1960s. If essays don't hold his interest, they're graded poorly.
Brutal prof and marking was very inconsistent
Worst prof ive ever had, marking was inconsistent, bought BOTH textbooks and they where never used, the essay topics where brutal and marked very unfairly, ( He stepped in at the university of Winnipeg) will never take a class if hes the prof
This class from the get-go was energetic and a lot of fun, split lecture/seminar, the seminar was by far the most provoking aspect of the class. Work load was heavy but the flexibility of choice in his assignments dates really saved my skin. They were fixed dates but the variety of choices in the papers allowed for a tailored set of due dates.
One of the best lecturers I've ever had. Class was always interesting. If you are not a good writer you may struggle. Marking of essays is tough but fair. Not any different from other history professors in terms of difficulty. To do well in upper year history classes you have to be a strong writer
Awesome professor! I took it as a field requirement but it ended up being the best class I took all semester. If you read the material (which isn't ever too long or dense) and actively engage yourself in discussion, the class will be very enjoyable. Argue something original and well-structured in your essays and you will move into the 'A' category.
Prof Buri is energetic and concise during lectures. Uses humor to relate the subject material to contemporary issues or tv shows. Loves the 1960s. However get ready to work hard on your essays. Recommend
Dr. Buri is very energetic when lecturing, and makes the class more laid-back. He is very knowledgeable, and teaches in a way that allows students to really understand the material. He does have high-expectations, but as long as you put time and effort into the assignments, you will do fine in his courses. Overall, a good professor.
He gives amazing lectures, find him so interesting to listen to. Of course he is quite nice to look at as well, which might help. He makes history of the world actually really interesting. Super glad I took his class! Hard marker though, if English isn't your first language I would highly suggest you take something else.
Mr. Buri's Human Rights and Social Justice class was the first class I ever took in University. His lectures were great and it really sparked my interest in history. Essay topics were interesting and he cares more about content then formatting, which was helpful.
He has really interesting, thought-provoking lectures. He is very passionate and takes an interest in the students. Always has some music to go with his lectures which is interesting. Note-taking can be a challenge since he talks a mile a minute because he gets so riled up about some of his topics. Great prof though and would highly recommend.
History can be intimidating. George didn't make it less so. He did, however, put things in a context everyone could understand. He was passionate about his students' understanding of concepts, less concern with point value. Dr. Buri is a TRUE teacher and I would recommend ANY of his classes to anyone. U of W needs to keep this guy around. :)
He talks really fast and he gives very hard assignments. I would not take any other courses with him.
Not a great professor for history students. Would be ok as an easy elective because the work load is incredibly light. I expect supplementary readings, discussions, perspectives, and many primary sources to explore, whereas this prof taught at a high school level, and did not foster learning but just smugly assumed his arguments were infallible.
Tangents are frequent, but interesting, and I felt like I learned a lot (although not all of it directly relating to the course topic). Some background knowledge of the topic (for article responses and essay) and quick handwriting (to get everything he says down; he values his own opinion) are both musts.
Very good professor! His lectures were interesting and engaging. I learned a lot and gained interest in the course material.
I felt like I could've done so much better on my second essay because I rushed it so much compared to my first one. Dr. Buri is a very intriguing lecturer and makes history sound very interesting. funny cool guy but a tough grader for sure. I recommend good-strong writers to only take this class.
Taking American Pop Culture with Dr. Buri was really fun, he really seemed to be excited about what he lectured on. Does not facilitate taking notes very well, so be prepared to have to pick and choose what you take down. Paper topics were not difficult, and he is somewhat flexible with due dates. Make sure you do the required readings!
Buri is a really amazing prof and had engaging lecture, but for his third year classes the assignments and reading material get long. I did well on the essays, but the readings were dull in my opinion. Funny guy though!
Lectures are super engaging and inspirational however he goes off on tangents quite often and this doesn't help at all for the further essays and exam at the end. IF HISTORY is not your strong point I would not recommend taking his class as much of his lecture requires previous knowledge.
Awful. Worst prof I've ever met. He gives hard assignments. Also, essays and papers are marked unfairly and graded poorly.(basically depends on his interest and opinions. Comments on papers are not useful enough to correct your mistakes. Definitely he is a tough grader, brutal prof and inconsistent markings. I would never take his class again.
Took History 1390 with Buri and he did a great job of keeping the class focused on a topic that might not be interesting to everyone. Lectures were well thought out& organized. Be ready to come to every class and leave with a aching hand as there is no textbook and everything you need to know must be written down. One of the best profs I've had !
Thought he'd be a cool dude because I saw him on Jeopardy and got all excited. Turns out he speaks really fast and seems to not really care if you don't understand the material. He leaves the absolute worst feedback on your exams/papers. He's super passionate about history and can sometimes be funny but I was glad to say sayonara. What a shame.
Amazing lectures - very passionate and interesting to listen to.
If you're looking for interesting lecture with non-conservative views towards history, sure he's your guy. However, his grading is horrible and he cares about his views more than anything when grading . If you're a very good writer, then you should be fine and get good grades.
Very tough marker. He gets a marker to mark the first paper, and he marks the others. He is pretty understanding that other things get in the way of life, so he's ok with extensions. Lectures are very hard to follow and its unclear which parts are important. Would not recommend him for a first year course.
George Buri was overall a pretty good prof! Sometimes his lectures were a little scattered and hard to follow, but for the most part he is an extremely interesting man and is passionate about what he teaches. I would say attendance wasn't mandatory, but definitely the readings are, as there are papers based on them. Overall a good prof!
Overall nice guy butHe is more interested in his cell than students and ends early to play ultimate frisbee. Unclear essay guidelines left everyone guessing. Do not take his class if English is your second language. My grade was fair but it took LOTS of extra work. Remember to write what he wants to read if you want a better grade. No textbook .
Probably the best professor I have had so far. Really enthusiastic about the course. At first I thought he was a little off, but when getting deeper into the course, his quality started to shine. His feedback is helpful and encourages development. Overall a solid professor
Great professor. George has a great sense of humour, and always has music to start every class off. Explanations in class are good, and marking is fair. Although his feedback on written work isn't very good. But he always made class fun to go to, and I enjoyed taking his course. He is very enthusiastic about what he teaches and his passion shows.
Possibly the best professor I have ever had. He is extremely passionate about what he is teaching, and the lectures are very entertaining and fascinating. Although I found him a little bit intimidating to answer or ask questions. The assignments were very difficult but i felt the marking was fair.
Dr. Buri is a great professor, and soon this became my favorite class. He is very knowledgable about the topics we covered in class and was very capable of answering any questions that we had. He doesn't post his lectures so as long as you show up, pay attention and take notes in class you should do well. I highly recommend him for history classes.
Dr. Buri's lectures are always very upbeat, and he has a way of keeping your attention despite teaching a relatively boring topic. Unfortunately, that's really where the positives end. His lectures were hard to follow as he did not emphasize key points. Instructions for papers were vague in some cases. His exams were also difficult.
George is THE BEST prof I have ever had!! His lectures are so engaging and he is very easy to listen to! He is also very relatable and makes jokes throughout the class. VERY NICE GUY I recommend taking a class with him, especially if you hate history he will change your mind!
Professor Buri's lectures are always fun and interesting but the assignments and exams are based on whatever reading you do outside lectures, although he does upload lecture slides which are a helpful guide on what to research.
George was amazing. Even when his class was early in the morning, I made sure I never missed his lectures because a. His tests are based on them, and b. They are interesting and engaging. Coursework was not overbearing at all, and he was very approachable.
George made lectures funny and entertaining. His lectures were the only ones I was fully engaged in. He based most of the grades off of papers. He is a tough grader so you have to put a lot of effort into your work. He doesn't post notes and his slides are mainly pictures so being there and listening well is important.
Amazing prof and super engaging! Requires textbooks, but his lectures are thorough enough that you get the majority of info from him directly, but definitely get ready for note taking. Would definitely take again, one of my favourite profs I've encountered!
Ive taken 4 classes with George and hes the best prof Ive ever had. He cares about his students and it shows in the lectures. Expect 2-3 essays, and 2 questions on the Final, nothing else. Very accessible office hours. He makes you work for your grades on your essays. Pro tip: gives extensions and go into office hours to ask for a better grade.
During the first few lectures, I found him to be rude to the students when they tried to encage in the conversations he seemed to start. He also gets off book and goes over in time every lecture. He was not clear in the grading process and what his expectations for his papers were. He was easier to listen to considering it wasn't as impersonail.
Wonderful prof, cares a lot about his students and doing well in the course. EXTREMELY easy to approach and email with questions, and very understanding with deadlines etc. I recommend doing the assigned writing ASAP though, and taking some notes throughout class. Lectures are good but can be tangent-y, with some hidden gems throughout.
George Buri was potentially the best professor Ive ever had. He loves interacting with students and encourages joking around. I always looked forward to my classes with him because he made the content so engaging through his personality and sharing insights that would be hard to find elsewhere. Lots of writing but its worth it for his lectures.
Took HIST 2760 online this semester, he definitely has a wide knowledge of the subjects he is talking about but does seem to go off on tangents quite often. He was really fair in his grading and gave good feedback. If you don't like participating in lectures this isn't the class for you because 1/3 of the class is small group discussions.
I'm not a history major but George Buri made classes so much fun to go to. I study science full-time so taking this class among my 3 other science/math classes was tough. In this class, I wrote about 3 essays, 1500 words each. I had no idea how to do anything but George took it easy on us students grading-wise.
Dr Buri is far and away the best professor I have had at this university. He is charismatic and not only shows great care for the material, but also for his students. He makes you work for good grades, but creates an atmosphere in his class that makes you want to produce your best work. Would highly recommend to anyone and everyone!
His lessons are really engaging and he's very enthusiastic about the topics he teaches. He often goes on tangents, but they're usually somewhat relevant to the topic and interesting if you enjoy history. I would definitely take one of his classes again. If you're a good essay writer this course is for you.
A very relaxed professor that engages in lots of discussions. Easy to get off track which makes the class easier to be a part of.
he has an easy way with his students. dropped this class cause it seemed like more of an advanced class even though it was recommended to first years and because his notes weren't organized. u had to make notes from his slides I class which he never posts online. also prefers printed form of assignments which was an extra cost for me
Amazing, engaging teaching style. Brings ton of energy and personality to teaching. Very passionate and engaging, as well as making complex subjects simpler to understand.
His lectures were fun. He would get off track quite a bit, but he's passionate about the subject. He was a bit of a tough grader on assignments, less so for the exam, so you do have to work hard to get an A. I don't think the amount of reading was that bad, there wasn't even 1 reading per week on avg- I've had 1st year classes with more reading.
He was an ok prof. Fair grader for some things however difficult for the exams. His lectures were extremely hard to follow jumping from one topic without elaboration
I've not come arocss any instructor nearly as arrogant as Buri. impossible to communicate with inside/outside class. equally impossible to pay attention to his class as he literally just reads off of the notes with ill-fitting rhythms. no we did not sign up for class to hear a prof ramble on for most of the 75 min lecture. extremely disorganized.
if he could apply even just 2% of his enthusiasm for indoctrinating his false worldviews to how much he cares about what students think of him i'd think his open eurocentrism and narcissism less of an problem. my bigger concern is how he was even deemed suitable for teaching in a university environment by u of m.
He is funny, tells great stories during lectures, a great guy overall. Lectures are interesting and informative. The course consisted of a midterm, final, no required readings, and an essay due every month so it was very easy to keep up with this class. He is a fair but tough grader. Do not miss lectures as he does not post anything on UM Learn.
It's very tough to understand the lectures. No structure and is all over the place, Not much communication on goals of readings/lectures.
I'm coming to defend Buri from these other ratings. He is by far one of the best history profs in the department. A lot of the people complaining probably skip his class.. because if you show up, you'll do fine. Yes he can go off on tangents, but he is always open to talking with students who are confused before/after class. He cares a lot.
The lectures are so fun, I look forward to this class every week because all the concepts are explained so well and in a fun way, unlike reading textbooks. If you attend lectures and care about the material you probably wont need to use the textbook and will definitely do well. He does go on some tangents but they are usually relevant.
Dr. Buri makes the lectures very interesting and engaging. You can tell he puts a lot of effort into how the content is delivered, making sure that his students are understanding and critically thinking about the subject matter. If you are engaged in class and take good notes, you will get a lot of value from his lectures.
Professor Buri's passion and enthusiasm towards what he teaches is truly unmatched. He is super approachable and is always willing to help. I have taken multiple courses with Buri and if my degree allows it, I will continue to take his courses.
Dr. Buri has great lectures that will keep you interested, informed and entertained. Buri gives great and constructive feedback making it very easy to work towards better marks on future assignments, however still not being a difficult marker. Buri wants you to succeed in his class and has fair exams in which he will prepare you for. Highly rec
For the first two months of this course, Professor Buri did not relay appropriate information concerning our textbooks and what he was teaching in class was not even in the textbook. He gets too excited when teaching that he starts to emphasize unimportant facts and false doctrine relating to the history of events.
Great guy, even greater instructor. You can tell he is very interested in the topic, and it shows in his passion and energy when teaching the course. Gives a lot of current day anecdotes to describe the concepts that might be difficult to understand on its own. He highly encourages participation to match the energy he brings into the class. 10/10.
Very passionate about history, you pretty much have to attend the lectures as there are no notes online. The lectures are fun, he never really lets them get too boring. Sometimes hard to discern what's important and what is not in his lectures but if you are paying attention you will get the point he is trying to make. Fair grader, overall great.
Very passionate about history, so lectures weren't boring. He has some weird criteria when marking essays, such as his hatred for cliches. The kind of prof who would check his page often. Posted slides once briefly, them took them down to try to improve low attendance, it did not. Overall not bad.
I have taken most of my minor with George plus some more and he is by far one of the best history professors within the department. For people saying he is hard to follow (I can see it), but if you put in effort and ask him, he will openly explain anything in further detail. Tip: find the era in which he is talking about, it helps with his finals
The best history professor i've ever taken at the uofm. He is super entertaining and makes his lecture very interesting with his enthusiasm. I have taken many courses with him and they are always very interesting. He is a very fair marker. As long as you attend lectures and put some effort into your essays and exams you will do good!
Really great professor, I'm not a history major, just needed a written requirement and he got me interested in history. He has an enthusiastic voice and he's really engaging. Grading was very fair and even a bit lenient for exams. Just please don't talk during class, he doesn't like it nor do your peers.
i highly recommend Dr Buri. He gives great, entertaining and informative lectures. Dr. Buri is not assignment heavy and gives good feedback, he is also a reasonable marker. Dr. Buri is very passionate about his courses and it shows.
Buri is an awful professor, avoid if possible. No notes/lecture slides available on umlearn. Lectures are a complete mess and impossible to follow.
Very hard to follow lectures even though they are entertaining. Lots of readings and responses and doesn't really give good feedback. Got marks taken off for using high vocabulary, like he expects a 13 year old to be able to read it.
He is a really fun guy but I would not take a class with him again. I am a history major and he is the harshest grader out of all the history profs I have had. He also posts nothing on unlearn which is difficult if you miss a class. His lectures also are difficult to follow.
Buri is the GOAT. I wish I could take all his classes. Being able to learn from someone so educated, so knowledgeable and worldly, is a privilege. His lectures are meticulously prepared, the course is curated around a goal and vision, and if you listen, take notes, and do the readings, you will understand and do well in the course.
he is such a funny prof and is clearly passionate about what he is teaching. he takes time to explain a concept in different ways for the class to fully understand. he is an amazing first year prof, you need to come to class though. he dosent post notes on UMlearn, but he goes over stuff alot so if you miss one thing you can get it the second class
Lectures are very entertaining and he keeps you engaged, but they often go all over the place and are difficult to follow. Doesn't share materials so that students get better at taking notes, which becomes challenging when lectures are hard to follow. He is also a tough grader making it hard to get a decent grade while putting in lots of effort.
Not a great experience. Lectures follow no structure, and it often felt like he was just speaking to his hearts content. No notes or powerpoints available online. Be ready to learn everything on your own if you want to pass.
He is not so good at being connected with the students, as If we wanted to be here( business major). I took this class because I needed a written course and for me it was fun but he felt off putting, teaches like he's telling a story, no proper structure, no slides, no reference from textbook, funny at times but its pretty hard to get a good grade.
He make class fun while still being on-topic. One drawback is he doesn't share notes/slides he wants you to takes notes on lectures
It was okay explanation good but at the end of the day I had to manage to get more points on my essays his classes and sometimes I was lost in his lectures. You have to be passionated like him to do good
