I had Cherveny for statistics at UW-L. This guy is super funny and makes math interesting! It is so obvious that he as a passion for math, which makes class enjoyable too. He even gives out packets for class so you don't take your own notes. And the tests are exactly like those packets. Just pay attention and do the homework and you will be fine!
George is an awesome guy who tries his best to keep you interested, while also going slow enough so you are not overwhelmed by the coursework. He prints out packets for you to follow along and take notes on. For the most part, the homework is all straight out of the packets. We did not use webwork at all. I highly recommend taking George!
LOVED him. He has a passion for teaching and is very organized. He uploads packets for each chapter on D2L for you to print with in class problems, notes, and practice problems. Quiz each week and 4 tests. Stats is a hard class, but George does an excellent job of explaining in the simplest way. He is always available for extra help
One of my favorite teachers! He is very funny, organized, passion for teaching, and always willing to help you until you understand. If you follow along in class and do the practice problems, you will do fine! Stats is hard and you have to put in the work, but George explains in an easy way to understand and allows you to use formula sheets
I had George for statistics and he was one of the best math professors I have ever had. He is so willing to help outside of class when you don't understand the material. Also he has such a genuine personality and it is very apparent he loves what he does. He has an awesome sense of humor which makes the class better for everyone there.
Professor Cherveny is very kind and dedicated to helping his students succeed. He is happy to meet with you outside of class to explain things and genuinely cares about his students. He also is very humorous, but it doesn't take away from his effectiveness as an educator.
I'm awful at math, but Dr. Cherveny is the first college stats professor that was clear enough to help me pass the class. Teaches at a good pace where even those who get lost easily can understand within the class period. Very fair grader. Show up to every class as he does take attendance, but is understanding if you're sick and email him.
He's happy to help you understand but the exams are difficult to adjust to. The hardest part is that he doesn't give partial points so if you miscalculate something in one of the first steps, the entire problem is then wrong, which can mean an automatic 20 points off.
Extremely nit picky grader on tests and quizzes. He moves fast in his lectures so It is worth it to do the suggested homework and pay attention in class. Overall not an easy stats class. Would not recommend for elementary statistics.
This is the greatest professor ever. Goes through material pretty thoroughly and makes corny jokes that make class a lot more enjoyable. Math makes him super excited and happy and it's great. I would definitely recommend taking Cherveny as a professor, especially if you are a slow learner in math. I have always struggled in math but got an AB!
I LOVE Dr. Cherveny and I'm a sociology major! His grading criteria is clear and takes test problems directly from his own homework questions. He tells you exactly what he expects and gives great examples in class. I truly believe what prof you have for mth145 will make or break you and Cherveny is the best chance for getting the grade you want!
Overall Dr. C is great if you're willing to work every day on the homework. He definitely does not give out As in his classes and grades tough. The best strategy for his class is to attend his office hours to go over the homework. He can be condescending at times, but is really passionate about math and getting students to learn math the right way.
Absolute favorite teacher I have ever had. Cared a lot about the students and was extremely helpful. He even made a math class something I would look forward to.
Very picky on grading, he wants you to have the work done in a specific format on exams otherwise you will get points off. Not an easy class, but decent stats professor overall. Funny guy, extremely nice during office hours. I would definitely recommend going into his office hours if you struggle in math though, that completely saved my grade!
I LOVE Dr. Cherveny! He's funny and keeps class lively. Stays focused during class and explains this so well! I was dreading this class but got an A because he was so awesome! Do daily quick homework and you're set. Exams are almost identical to the quizzes and homework questions. Clear grading and didn't hate going to class!
Funny professor who keeps the lectures interesting. Tough grader, you get a lot of points off if your homework is wrong as part of your quiz he has you put your answers down for certain problems. Overall good professor! If you do the homework you should do fine.
If you get the chance, take this professor for any math class! He really knows his stuff and is a genuinely nice person. He really likes participation in class so make sure to speak up. His tests and quizzes were fair and were exactly set up like the examples done in class. Overall, I would recommend taking this professor.
Cherveny is a good teacher. He explains everything very well except sometimes moves too quickly, but if you have any questions or don't understand something he's more than willing to help you understand and not move on until you do. Grades quizzes and tests kind of hard(have to show work the way he does)but you just have to understand how he grades
He is a knowledgable man, but flies through the material. I would go to his office hours and he would be angry at me that I didn't't understand it and he would remind me of how he put it in the board, but clearly that didn't help my understanding of the material. Very disappointed with him, nothing like my previous math teacher that is for sure.
He is a professor that knows his stuff. He goes very quickly through material but not so quickly where you can't write it down. Once it's written down you can review your notes, and that helped me. He does expect you to be at pretty much every class.
He is very rude and doesn't relate to students well. When you go into the office for help he acts mad and makes you feel dumb if you do not understand the problems. Very VERY picky grader, would avoid at all costs.
Look guys, Calc is hard. As someone who was awful at it but had to take it for their minor, I would not have passed this class if it wasn't for George. He is a really good guy who knows his stuff. Go to class, do your homework, ask questions and you can pass this class.
One of the worst professors I have had. He docks you points if you don't do a problem exactly the way he does it. He doesn't explain anything well. If you can, avoid taking his class.
He is the nicest professor i have had since being here and his teachings actually help you learn. He's not like most professors that teach like everyone already knows everything which is super nice. He takes attendance every day so attendance is mandatory. Overall, great professor and definitely would take again!
I learned an exceptional amount from Cherveny, but was very challenged during the course. His tests were pretty straightforward, similar to the quizzes, but a couple of small mistakes and your grades easily dropped to C's and D's, making it hard to climb back up. There is no extra credit, curves, group tests, or anything of the sort.
Didnt respond once to my questions/emails, but I know he saw them since he would regard my other classmates emails to him. Can be quite rude, I was personally offended twice by something he said. He knows his stuff but would not recommend to anyone who isnt above average in math. Requires your test work to be a cerrain format. Very hard grader.
Dr. Cherveny really cares about his students and wants to see them succeed, and will do everything he can to make that happen. The class itself is not easy, especially if you're not great at math, like me. You'll have to put in work to get a good grade but Dr. Cherveny is very helpful in answering any questions you have.
Dr. Cherveny knows his stuff and is skilled at teaching it to his students. He is a very good teacher, but he grades extremely harshly. You will most likely get a worse grade than you want. His class goes by quickly though. He is very helpful during office hours.
George is a really good guy. I had him for stats and calc. Calc is a rough one, but he does his best to try and explain it well so the students understand it. Super funny guy with an awesome sense of humor. Highly recommend.
George Cherveny was the hardest professor I have had. Tough grader. His lectures are difficult to follow
Horrible teacher. Was very rude and graded way too harshly. Avoid at all costs.
His class is tough but by probably the best MTH175 profs. He really tries to get you to understand does a good job at it. He's a tough grader but I would recommend him especially if you have never taken calc before.
I loved George. He makes his own packet of notes and homework for the semester, and the quizzes and tests have problems just like from his packet. He doesn't try to trick you. He teaches you exactly what you need to know. But, YOU CAN'T SKIP CLASS. Show up to class and you'll be good!
He is the worst professor/teacher I have ever had in my life. avoid at all cost unless you wanna fail
He is overall a great math professor who explains things very well. He also gives many opportunities to for you to ask/answer questions. The homework problems are almost exactly like the test. If you do the homework, review your notes before quizzes, study for exams, and follow the lecture you will do good.
He expects a lot out of students, at least one quiz per week, and lengthly homework. He can never admit when he is wrong, waits for students to answer questions that we wouldn't know the answer to. Takes off points if you don't show your work in the fashion he wants you to.
Overall he's not a bad teacher. He is good at explaining the material but is very decisive on the way you must do things. You have to do all the steps his way and show your work for everything. You can't really miss class because he is very lecture heavy and will give out pop quizzes occasionally.
He is by far the worst professor I have had at this school. He is the pickiest grader I have ever had. I showed work and got the correct answer however, still got points taken off because it wasn't the work he wanted to see. The class is not difficult. He seems like a nice guy. His grading methods will make you want to punch a wall.
Cherveny is one of the worst professors I've had in college. Whether or not you get the correct answer is irrelevant because you will still get a good portion of points taken off. The content is simple to understand but he will belittle you to the point of insanity.
I thought he was a really great professor. He is picky on how to do problems, but it's needed in order to do the problems right later. Concepts are really simple and it's a pretty easy class. Textbook was never touched. There's no class calendar, which I was worried about, but he handles everything well.
One of the worst professors i've had. Expect a quiz every week. He also is just straight up rude to students if you answer a question wrong (Even if it is in front of the whole class).
Would not recommend taking his class, very tough grader and not very committed to helping individual students.
He is extremely critical when grading (how you show your work, and exact answers). His lectures are usually helpful and entertaining enough, and he will occasionally offer extra credit points for answering questions in the lecture. Don't expect to talk with any other students unless you make an effort to (no group work).
I have never had a professor as bad as George. He makes you not want to ask questions, and grades harder than any professor I have ever had. He knows the material so well that he doesn't know how to teach it and seems to get frustrated when you don't understand. Avoid at all costs
Cherveny is a great professor to take. He does many clear examples on the board of each lesson and has many ungraded homework assignments for extra practice. His grading can be specific but just do the problems exactly how he teaches you and you will get it correct. There are weekly quizzes which help your grade out a ton if you do well on them!
George is one of my favorite professors at UWL. He is quirky and really tries to engage with his classes. He has a packet for the entire semester which is super super nice. You buy it in the bookstore. He also is very accessible and helps a lot during his office hours if you need help! I took stats in high school so the work was minimal.
I struggled a lot in the first half of the class, and then finally started coming into his office hours. He is really nice and helpful, especially when he knows you care too. He gives really good examples, although he does grade hard so you have to follow his instructions exactly. He is also very quirky which makes class a little more enjoyable.
Overall he covers the content and explains the material rather well. Expect a quiz at least once a week and a test every couple of weeks. He continuously asks the same question over and over waiting for an answer that you couldnt possibly know, then pretentiously tells you youre wrong, rather obnoxiously and makes you look like an idiot.
I love this man. He was so clear on what he wanted on assignments he gives in class and what is going to be on the tests. If you attend class, ask questions, do the optional homework he gives, and study for quizzes and tests, you'll pass no doubt. He lectures are entertaining and he answers every question you have.
George is a very kind and caring professor. He was always excited to help and answer questions and makes math bearable. I feel like the people that have bad experiences with him just didnt do the homework and study. If you do the homework and arent lazy youll do great.
Great personality but not a great teacher. Consistently does simple math wrong in his examples online and in person leaving you confused and he doesn't really take it well when students try to correct him. Webwork and Textbook assignments as homework but only webwork is graded. Didn't go to class for a few weeks and failed a test, so go to class!
Awesome professor if you're not confident in math. He concentrates on what actually matters and is easy to contact and helpful with any questions without making you feel stupid. I have taken him for all my math classes and hope to continue doing so!
Worst teacher, most likely you will fail, avoid at all costs.
Gives very few opportunities to earn points. He also gets upset with you when you dont understand the content. Skips steps when going through example problems. He expects you to have the same understanding of the content as he does. I would avoid taking his class if possible.
I took George for MTH 175 first semester freshman year, if you go to class every day and do the homework the class is easier. This man has so much passion for math and just life in general. I usually looked forward to class and never dreaded it. George wants all of his students to succeed in this class and life. I plan to take him for STAT145 too.
Despite the class being rather difficult he wasn't a terrible professor. I had to get help multiple times during the school year and he was always willing to help. His tests are hard, but if you study enough for them you can succeed in the class. Overall, it was better than what I thought going into it.
Professor Cherveny is a good dude. He is super helpful if you have any questions. He goes through the content super quick and assigns some online hw that is mandatory. When going through the content in person, it seems pretty straight forward, but once you get to the mandatory hw and exams, its unbelievably hard. I don't think he realizes that.
The math department at La Crosse is like this. You live in one world the professors live in a completely separate world. When I asked how the class was doing 50% of the class was struggling or failing, this is the second time I have taken calculus, and I would say I am a pretty decent math student, however unless your a math major best of luck.
10/10 teacher. This class is not easy but Prof Cherveny will make sure you pass if you show that you care. Participation in class and homework is a must. As long as you try, you will do just fine. Very personal and a genuine person. Unfortunately I am unable to get him for my next class, otherwise I totally would.
Professor Cherveny single-handedly ruined my experience at UWL. If I had any power what so ever I would fire him and make sure he never teaches at another institution. Not only does he not care about his students he gets mad if someone who is learning the material for the first time does not understand his teaching. He simply is a terrible person.
DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN! He is quite possibly the worst professor at UWL. Not only does he make mistakes and errors every class he also gets mad at students for not having the same understanding of the material that he does. I would actively avoid this terrible professor and try to get another math teacher.
Terrible at explaining work and even worse at showing work. Will mark off for right answers yet constantly and I mean CONSTANTLY makes mistakes and errors in class while showing problems. No BS but I don't think there was a class where he didn't mess up a homework or practice problem. Then expected us to be able to decypher his mistakes.
One of the worst communicators available on campus. Sent a total of 5 emails to this man over the course of my class and only ever received 1 back. He only runs on his own time and does not care for his student's success. If UWL had any sense they would relieve him of his position and would stop continuing to do business with him!!!!!
Definitely the worst professor/teacher I have ever had. I didn't go to class a total of 3 times over the semester, he refused to help me on the material I missed, saying that he's not going to waste his time helping me if I didn't come to class. His tests are ridiculously hard and he constantly makes mistakes in class
I'm telling you now, do not take him. Your only grades are tests and quizzes. Makes so many mistakes in class but is completely unforgiving on tests. Expects you to be a genius on a subject after only one day of learning it. I've never hated math so much.
love this man
this dude cares about math and will answer any questions you have. just show up to class and do the homework and ur chillin!!!! your grade is based off quizzes and tests so study
At the beginning of the semester I enjoyed Professor Cherveny, but as the semester went on, he became my least favorite. He takes off points on tests for "showing too much work" or writing down the original equation. Will not answer questions that he thinks are "too easy". Of course they are going to be easy for him, he went to school for this.
I enjoyed being in professor Cherveny's class. Your grade is based upon only quizzes and tests. He expects you to have a good grasp of the information being covered in class. Moves at a fast pace. As long as you do the homework and study, you'll be just fine.
Very good professor! Cares a lot about the subject he is teaching and about his students. One of the only professors that know all of his students in the class by name. Genuinely a great guy!
He expects you to understand the material at his level when it is your first time learning. He also doesn't explain questions when he thinks they are "too easy". Would not recommend unless you are good at learning material on your own.
Professor Cherveny was by far the best professor I have ever had. He truly wants his students to succeed and is happy to help if needed. He provides many examples in class and the exams are mirror images of the homework/quizzes. He is very well prepared each day. Overall, I highly recommend taking Math 150 with him as he was a phenomenal teacher.
Professor Cherveny was a great professor who truly cares about his student's success. I had great conversations about math, travels, and sports. There are weekly quizzes (10) and a test (4 total) that each cover about 2/3 quizzes. If you participate in class, do the homework, and study your quizzes, then the tests will be exactly what you studied.
Had Prof Cherveny for MTH 150 (got an A) and currently for MTH 151. Never been good at math but he is outstanding. Attendance required, a quiz or test every week. If you go to class and do the homework every night you be fine. If you only cram the night before a test/quiz would not recommend. He expects you to learn and use the material.
Heres the thing with Professor Cherveny, he is a great teacher and is very helpful during his office hours. I am someone who is not good at math so I didn't like his class at first. It took some getting used to his teaching style. If you struggle at math like me attend all the lectures and go into office hours and you will be fine.
For the most part is a good and fair professor. However, makes a LOT of mistakes while teaching and is very unforgiving on tests with mistakes. At the end of the semester he put problems on the tests and quizzes that none of the students knew how to do and neither did the tutors for a lot of points which was annoying.
Does NOT care about the students in his class. When you have questions he dismisses them because "they're too easy". After 2 absences it is a whole % off your grade for every absence after that. Expects you to know the topics and speeds through material.Assigns homework but only tests and quizzes count for your grade. Would not recommend to anyone.
Prof Cherveny is one of my favs. He rly cared about my grade. I struggled in the beginning of the sem but, I got an AB on the last 2 tests. He is an "old school" teacher and gives a lot of work sheets. Do the hw each night (abt 15-30 mins) and study HARD for the 4 tests and you will do good. He goes over questions in class. Very knowledgable prof.
George is the best math professor I've ever had. He goes over every topic thoroughly and provides a lot of examples. He also makes the problems very simple and easy to work out. He does assign homework everyday but it is not graded, but I recommend doing all of the assignments. The quizzes he assigns are mirror examples of problems on the exams.
I SUCK at math but George made it easy to pass. Before every quiz he would quite literally tell you everything on it or even what the first problems would be in exact. literally always told you what to study for the quiz. If you had an A you don't have to take the final. Just try a little and put time in studying and you'll pass.
Will not read emails asking for help. Did not have office hours. Good at giving examples, but not at explaining.
Did not answer to emails when asking for help.
Does not answer emails asking for help. extra credit is random and almost always given to people who do not need it. prioritizes students with an A.
Graded by quizes and tests only.
