He is someone everyone must take! He's the coolest and most helpful prof here!
He is always willing to help out his students.
You need to know chemistry first..
Gets involved with students-excellent teaching skills
This class was hard, but he was very helpful. Sometimes, he was funny, too.
he was very confusing and always tried to trick people on tests
He was a wonderful, yet crazy man. I really liked him. I would recommend him to anyone.
jesus teacher, instills good work ethic
What's it do? It forms ions! Very helpful, good at explaining things.
great teacher..all tests come from notes

i really like him, he tries to be funny and he is really helpful!!
Dr. Eastland is an excellent professor. All tests come from the notes, he never surprises us. Believe it not, he actually even tells us, question for question, what will be on the test. He's very helpful & INSISTS on students seeking his help when needed.
keep up the good work
terrible teacher doesn't example anything in class and says that there will be no surprises on exam and which there are.
have to pay close attention
Always available when you need help, really cares about his students, wants them to suceed.
Best chemistry teacher at SVSU. You will understand the material after this class because you are learning, not just memorizing.
I liked him! Class was not to hard, but I did homework and studied!
Very good professor. Cares about students deeply. Tests come from notes (be prepared for surprises on tests though), lectures very clear and to the point. You will learn a lot.
Dr. Eastland is an amazing teacher and person in general. He puts his heart into teaching and makes sure his students are going to succeed. He offers tons of help and his tests come from his notes. he tells you what is on the test as well! Best teacher!!!
Dr. Eastland is a very nice man and is always willing to help. Studying is a must if you want to do well in his class, but that is to be expected in college. He made an 8:30 am class tolerable.
Eastland is great! He is very active. He takes the time to learn your name and talk to you to see how you are doing. In his review sections he will tell you what is on the test question for question. He also drops your lowest test score!
He is a very good teacher. The class is a hard class, no matter what teacher you take, but he is so helpful and friendly. A very funny guy! TAKE HIS CLASS
This guy will go the extra mile to help and he is interesting. Great prof who makes the class interesting.
Very good teacher, makes class fun.
Very good teacher but hard. He talks and teaches everything very fast. He doesn't go over anything unless you ask him to. His tests are impossible. I got a B in high school chem but now i'm failing this class.
I dropped this class, he is an awesome teacher. Just moves very fast, and tests are SOOOOO hard!
A very good professor, explains things well, keeps your attention thoughout class with his demonstations. Tests are not bad, know your notes, and he will tell what is going to be on the tests. Class is well worth the little bit of extra work on the tests.
He is a great guy. The class was challenging but he is always willing to help.
Dr. Eastland is awesome. The class is pretty challenging, but he teaches the material so well, that you should know what you are doing on tests. He keeps things interesting and really gets to know his students.
NOT AN EASY CLASS....He is a good teacher and will help you out no matter what, but his tests are hard and he does cover a lot of matterial in a short time. Get his old tests and you should do fine, if you need help go to him, he will clear anything up for you
Dr. Eastland was a great professor. His tests are very hard. I had a tutor for this class and I still got a C. This class is very challenging but if you have to take Chemistry 111 I would recommend Dr. Eastland.
Eastland class is hard. Questions from lecture doesn't match questions on test. Always get to class 30 mins before the test so you have extra time on it. You will need it. Expects that you've had HS chem within the last 2 years and have taken Chem 102. Very challeging. But makes Class FUN!!!.
Eastland is a cool guy, funny as****, and is always willing to help students in need. study hard and get his old tests, they are key for good grades. Somehow manages to learn 90+ names throughout semester. Inspiring for many he believes you will devise a better way to filter salt from sea water
Rude.Arrogant.Maybe doesn't mean to be rude, but came off that way. I would never take him again, never. I am a 4 point student and i had to work my @$$ off for my grade, in a stinky 1 credit lab.Maybe he's not bad at lecture since he has good ratings for that, but not lab. Time for him to retire.
I agree that he is a very hard teacher.if you have a question ask-if after expalnation you still don't understand ask again.I took this class twice with him-the first time I didn't work veryhard got a D second time around I worked harder got a B.Nice guy but wants you to know material.
He was quite rude and arrogant to the students. He been teacher there for 50 years. It's time for him to retire, he's 70 years old or older. I found his lecture material s quite confusing. Take another professor if you can.
Dr. Eastland is a great professor. He is really helpful and interested in whether his students learn the material. It is a very challenging class and requires a lot of work.
This class was somewhat challenging. But, he really cares how you do as long as you show that you are trying. I really liked him- very funny. Get his old tests to study. He doesnt mind and they are normally a lot like his new tests. Get a tutor if you can it will help. You will learn Chemistry!
Took this class with him twice, both times got a D. Do not miss one class if you plan on having him, or he will hold it against you, guaranteed. Heard his Lab sucks too.
Extremely hard! I enjoy Chemistry and had to drop this class. His tests are very very difficult. If you spend tons of time studying in this class you will do decent, but if you have a good GPA this class may screw you up a bit.
He contradicts himself. At the beginning of the sem. he said he'd be willing to schedule extra time to come in if you messed up, but when I asked him later if he could do that he was rude and mean and wouldn't do it. I'm a 4.0student so it's not like I skipped and needed the time. I got an A- wtf. I think he doesnt mix the soln's right.DontTakeHim!
Rude and arrogant, I agree. He made me cry just from the way he responds to questions. He can be funny but I felt like he didn't want to put too much effort into this class. I wouldn't take him again.
Hard. Hard. Hard. He tells you whats going to be on the exam but that means he makes it 3 times harder. Lots of studying doesn't make a difference in this class.. you have to KNOW chemistry very well in order to get a good grade. DON'T take him!
Very nice guy. He lectures on what he tests on. Will go out of the way to help students in lecture. Lab with him is an easy grade although he does not like to help you much in lab and make you think your way through the experiments. Nice guy and not too difficult.
He is such a jerk. He feels superior to his students and makes them feel stupid in front of the entire class. If you ever get a chance... DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!11
Hard, but do the homework it helps, go to reciation. STUDY YOUR ASS OFF. Get a tutor, Get old tests, STUDY STUDY STUDY Lab relates nothing to the class, and first day of class is nothing like the rest of it. First day is fun, rest is lectures and notes
I hate chemistry, but Eastland's really cool. He doesn't mess around and gives us all the info needed for the test. Plus I have this realy strange urge to form ions and find mols.
Great Prof! He is willing to help...if you are willing to learn. Before you start his class, you need to make sure that you realize college is a lot of work, not a free ride, because you will have to study your butt off in this class...but again this is college and college involves work, so if you are a bad or lazy student don't take him.
Dr. Eastland is a good teacher and he knows his information. If you struggle at first get a tutor and go and see him in his office. This class is not to be taken lightly and yu really must study hard to do well in the class. Lots of notes and no extra credit assignments so make sure you work hard. Get the old tests. He does his test based on them.
Very energetic. I loved how he puts all his notes in Powerpoint presentations, so you don't have to worry about a 1-3 hour lecture. Make sure if he says something several times, ESPECIALLY if it isn't on the powerpoint, WRITE IT DOWN! Many times it is a question on a test.
hard but interesting. Get a tutor if you are a little unsure of your abilities. Get old tests and go to recitation because he tells you EXACTLY what kind of problems will be on the test. Study a lot. Lab is REALLY easy. Make sure you take the extra time he gives you for exams you are going to need it!!! You WILL learn chemistry in this class.
This is definitely a challenging class and your grade is based solely on five tests and the final exam. You'll have to study like crazy but you get a ton out of the course and his teaching style is very enthusiastic and keeps your attention.
He is a great prof. This class did ruin my 4.0 GPA (I simply was too busy to study as much as I should have...it was my fault)...but from what I got out of the class...it was worth it. You WILL learn chemistry. Get his old tests...they are the key to success. He WILL help you too..if you try to do your work to begin with.
He is a terrific professor, full of energy and interesting stories. You definitely learn chemistry. Tough course, but always willing to help--he says his office hours are whenever you need him, and he sticks to it. Great guy, always look forward to lectures, not so much to the tests, but just study like crazy and take each test seriously.
Dr. Eastland is one of my favorite professors. He wants his "chemists" to do well. There's no excuse not to get an A in this class. He re-uses all of his 6 exams. He simply changes the numbers from the previous copies. He also tells you exactly what's on the test. Take him, you'll learn a lot and do well.
Very funny and helpful. He is an amazing teacher. Chemistry is hard stuff, but he will help you through it like a good friend.
He is tough, but he is also very nice and understanding. I took him twice for the same class because the first time I failed I just didn't get chem the first time around the next time it was as if I had suddenly begun to understand a foreign language same teacher same way of teaching so obviously it was me that just didn't get it the first time.
He goes quickly, but will stop and explain anything to you for as long as it takes. His lectures are PowerPoint. Tests started somewhat easy and then got harder, but not too bad.
Very nice professor, one of my favorites. He helps you out a lot if you don't understand the material. Also study your notes a lot and do the homework, because on the test there are questions very similar to the notes and homework. Do that and your good.
Dr. Eastland is by far the best Chemistry professor at SVSU. He is a great person that isn't just teaching for the money. His lectures are fun because of the enthusiasm he shows. He wants everyone to pass, but he will not pass you unless you earn it. His lectures are power point. Try and get old tests from former students. They help a great deal.
He is a very nice person, but he does not teach. He uses powerpoints, and you need prior knowledge to do well on the tests. It requires alot of studying and tutors. He is nice and will meet with you, but sometimes those meetings arent very helpful. You must work hard!
I absolutely loved Dr. Eastland! His tests were really hard, but manageable if you study. He is really funny, and his lectures are power points. Take him if you have the chance!
Eastland is funny, he class is alright to sit through. But he isn't always clear on his teaching skills. The book isn't necessary because ALL OF THE TESTS are from the notes! Taking good notes will prepare you for the tests, and of course this requires attending class. Just study the notes and you'll do fine!
His lectures are interesting, but you dont need to get the book because tests are based on lecture material only. The tests are difficult if you seriously do not study but make sure to try to get some of his old tests, those really helped me.
Definitely go to his office hours! I got help before every test & that helped me so much. The first test I didn't get help for & I got a 72. But for the next one, I went to office hours & got extra help from Dr. Eastland & got a 98. It makes a huge difference in your grade & he will appreciate you more if you take that extra time to get help.
Easy to understand but tests seem to cover different things than covered in notes.
I thought he was a great professor. Take good notes. Get the old tests. Study those before every test and you will pass with flying colors. If you dont plan on studying, then dont complain about the teacher.
Have to come to class...write ALL notes down from a power point. tells you what is on the test but sometimes throws in a question or two that is hard...must must pay attention!
Eastland is a really great guy... tons of energy for his age and really funny. Take notes from powerpoints the whole time. Don't bother with any of the homework or even buy the book. All of the tests are from the notes. He will tell you what exactly is on the tests but they are still difficult. Standard 6 tests, drop your lowest, no other stuff.
Dr. Eastland is by far my favorite professor. He is so easy to talk to and willing to help you with any questions you have. I recommend sitting in the front row of class so you can easily pay attention. Do the homework problems! They aren't graded but they do wonders for practice! You just need to put the time in and you'll do fine(:
Great professor. Everything you will need for his tests are laid out in his powerpoints (rarely needed the book). He'll describe each test problem during a recitation the week of the test, making it very easy to study. Energetic, fun prof too. Will run around the room from time to time acting out concepts, or make jokes relating to topics.
Very good teacher. Basically told you everything that was going to be on the test before you took it. You have to do the work tho. If you don't study and go to class, you won't do well.
gives you the questions that appear on the tests ahead of time, never will use your book. take a lot of notes but they are very clear. attend the resitations he is very helpfull
His tests are EXTREMELY hard. There are only 6 tests, the final is cumulative, and no hw or extra credit points. You have to study. I got a C and im an all A student. You will never use the textbook, you have to go to class, and take a lot of notes. All i have to say is good luck.
Eastland is a very smart man, but the class is very hard. There are 6 very hard tests, and an ACS final. He let's you drop one test, but you will need to stuff hard for this class. I am an all A student, and I got a B-.
He is a nice guy but his tests are hard and there isn't any graded work, and there are only a few tests. his class is hard to pass!
Eastland is just about as good as chemistry professors come. He's really knowledgeable and he's really helpful. If you get the chance to take one of his classes, do it!
Very helpful, tests are hard, but he tells you exactly what the questions are going to be question by question. He's a very good professor, I'd recommend him.
Apparently this was the first time the course was offered and the professor is use to teaching Chem 111, but he is very intelligent, but disorganized with his slides. Students had to keep correcting him and he corrected himself multiple times. Doing recommended homework problems if no prior experience with chemistry is a must.
I have taken numerous science labs, and the CHEM 111 Lab with Professor Eastland was by far the worst I've experienced. The professor is is very unwilling to help students. I am a high performing student, so lack of motivation is not fueling this review. If you are not highly confident in your chemistry abilities, AVOID.
Mixed review. He can be unpredictably moody (he's 76yrs old), funny, truly offensive, or full of praise and support. I mouthed back at his cockiness, but he took it as playful banter. Personality aside- his PP slides have frequent mistakes and he doesn't fix them for the next semester so pay attn. Available to students outside class.
For CHEM 111 I would go with him all the way up. he knows what are you going to take with you for your future and gives what is best for you. no need to buy the book if you take notes and attend all classes. tests needs a guy who knows how to study and aware about his future. He is always ready to help and make sure to meet him face to face ...
he skips steps needed in a process, likes to over challenge students, He puts his power points up and just reads the slides in a manner that is hard to understand
It was quite a grueling lab but that is also in part to me having a different chem teacher than him. My chem class was bad and led to me being unprepared. He will help to an extent if you ask but its not very genuine help. Ended up with an a only because my partner was good and if you do an extra lab at the end he will drop your lowest grade
Doesn't go very deep into explaining the underlying causes for why things are happening. Reads the lecture from the powerpoint every day. Goofy and lighthearted. the class would be very easy if you are already comfortable with basic chem. He's a lot more helpful outside of class
Great teacher! He's very sweet and nice during your labs. He will help you out as much as you need to get to the answer. You actually learn in his class. It's more of an independent class with your partner.
He's honestly the worst professor I have had thus far at SVSU. He's incredibly rude and when you ask a question he acts like you should already know it and rolls his eyes. Called me names almost every class period and basically treats you like you're incredibly dumb. I would advice you don't take chem 111 with him.
Dr. Eastland was a great professor. Was very helpful in lab if you had a question. Great to just talk to as well.
Gives 6 tests. All tests come from the powerpoint. Does not do a good job of explaining where formulas or anything come from. His method is to just memorize everything. The one good point is that he rarely gives multiple choice, so there is plenty of partial credit on tests.
He will explain things if you just keep bothering him. Otherwise he acts like you are dumb. Most people in our lab were afraid to ask him questions
As for in the lab he's a great professor. He accepts questions and is always walking around and available to help you if you get stuck. Generally a nice guy and can be understanding if you forget your lab sheets once he'll let you turn in a separate paper. Safety of course is #1. There are no make up labs. Overall, would recommend.
I struggle with math and chemistry and I really struggled in his class. Hes not very good at explaining HOW to do the problems. Very nice guy and easy to get along with but I wouldnt advise taking him if your not good at chemistry.
I had a great experience with Dr. Eastland. I understand people's negative comments in a sense because he can be off-putting if you don't make an effort to understand the material. This guy has been here for 40+ years and doesn't like excuses. Show up, take notes, you'll do well on the tests. Simple, great class.
Eastland is the best professor ive ever had. He expects you to learn the material and have it memorized, but makes it easier by letting you know what will be on the test beforehand. Sometimes I had to teach myself but I always did well on his tests. The homework is extra credit and it helps a lot. Work hard and you wont have an issue in his class
