Take this just to be around Ellmore. He's one of those profs that you will remember after you graduate.

who cares if he is hot he is an ass, and often too sarcastic
This man can be very funny and keeps his lectures upbeat and useful. He is extremely smart and knows his stuff very well. Unfortunately, his tests seem inordinately difficult and unfair when compared to the material. Also, he is greedy with grading.
really hot
I had Ellmore over ten years ago and he is one of the only teachers I remember from Tufts. I now teach Biology myself and when I teach plants I say to my kids what he once said in his plant phys. class - "Plants do everything we do...only much much s
he was really cool and knew his stuff

He says the funniest things. Very enthusiastic about plants, and a great teacher. Definitely memorable.
Very funny and clear, I always look forward to his class. While there's little work for the class, the tests quite difficult.
He is an amazing prof! His class is very fun and his lectures are great. The tests are a lot harder than you think they are going to be and he is a rough grader.
Clear, Funny, and engaging.
Lectures are something to really look forward to. Tests are a bit difficult but not so bad that you can't study and do well. Great class all around.
Kept his lectures entertaining and relevant in a subject that could be really boring. Tests weren't bad...but you have to study. Really funny, all-around nice guy!
i thought he was by far the best lecturer in Bio 14. He made me want to stay awake in class and actually come. He is very interesting and i actually learned stuff about plants instead of cramming it and then forgeting it all. I liked him a lot!

amazing lecturer
I LOVE HIM...if he weren't so old, i'd propose =o)
AHHH- he's so good! He's clear and concise, plus he's hilarious. Best part of BIO 14. I'm not even that interested in plants, but he made it a really interesting subject.
I love him! Only 1.5 hour class I've been able to stay completly awake for and not wanted to shoot myself by the end. Tests arn't that hard if you study. And again, I love this guy!
everyone says he shags the students
i took this class in talloires. if you are good at memorizing, its great - if not, you'll struggle a little. interesting to learn about flowers when youre in their natural habitat. interesting teaching style, funny professor, blunt to his students and respects it when you are blunt back. knows EVERYTHING you could possibly want to know abt plants..
George Ellmore is a great guy!Charismatic and funny, he definitely keeps the lectures entertaining. I would beware, however, of thinking the class is easy because it is designed for non-science majors. There is no text book, so all the information must come from personal notes. Tests are difficult and you must be very meticulous about note taking.

his test is the easiest bio test you will ever take at tufts
hysterical guy, the lectures are interesting enough to wake you up in the morning. tends to go off on tangents, but they're well worth the distraction. the one problem is that the tests are graded really hard and you have to take incredibly detailed notes to do well on them since there's no book. recommend a tape recorder and attending every class
extremely unfair
AVOID BIO 10 at all costs. The class is a complete waste of time for both majors and non- majors, and Prof. Ellmore does not care about his students or how they do on exams or anything other than how some obscure plant group relates to whatever he decides to relate it to. This class and teacher frustrated me beyond belief and ruined my GPA.
well SIR, guess did not care much about your plants""""""""""""""""""""""""" have a good life"""""""""""""""""""""""""" A+
One of the best lecturers at Tufts, not the most approachable guy but if you go to class, take good notes, and study hard for the Tests you'll do well. I'd recommend the class.
good class, but hard
This is just regarding Ellmore's teaching in Bio14, but he was a GREAT professor - especially after Professor Chew (not that she wasn't nice her test just kicked people's asses) but most people do really well and he's hilarious and I recommend going to his review sessions because everything becomes even more concrete. Easiest part of Bio14 by far.
I have not taken a class with Ellmore and I don't plan too. He is my env sci major advisor. As an advisor he has been very unapproachable and unhelpful. You absolutely have do drag information out of him. He is a pleasant guy, but he makes no effort to relate to me.
Extremely entertaining and recaps things to help review them. If you don't go to lecture, you're screwed because there is no outside work besides studying for exams. Class is based on 3 exams. He can be kind of cold when you approach him for help. I learned a lot of interesting facts and this class helped me decide to be a bio/env double major.
this is a very interesting class and i definitely learned more it in than others, but don't take it if you're hoping for an easy natural science credit. there is no textbook or out of class work so you must go to/pay attention to every class. the tests are pretty hard and they are graded even harder.
FREAKING HILARIOUS! This guy makes biology lectures enjoyable to listen to. He doesn't load his lectures up with detail but rather makes sure you understand the core concepts very well. He also has very easy exam and masteringbio questions. HIGHLY recommended, although unfortunately you can't take him in Bio14 without Prof. Chew.
Ellmore is such a great lecturer. There is no textbook use in this class. Come to class, take notes, and then there are three exams. The exams are extremely complicated and difficult, but it's worth it. Ellmore is hilarious and fascinating. I don't like science and this was a great way to fulfill the requirement. You'll start your day laughing.
Ellmore is the man! Hilarious. He makes plants awesome. I loved this class and I want to take every class he teaches. No textbook - just go to class and take notes. The exams are straightforward if you go to every class. As a person, he loves to do his own thing and not be bothered but he'll gladly talk to you if you want to talk about plants.
Ellmore is hilarious. He'll go on long tangents but he always comes back around to the material. His tests are super easy - just study the main ideas and you'll do fine. However, if you go to office hours, beware: he might go on a 2-hour tangent about the magical teas he has in his office.
Professor Ellmore is a great guy, and a great professor! He will make you love plants. Not only is he a very clear lecturer, but he is incredibly funny without meaning to be. Great guy. Take his classes!
Ellmore is an interesting guy. He's very enthusiastic about teaching and is pretty funny on top of that. However, he doesn't really stick to his powerpoints, goes off on tangents and rarely ever finishes lectures so make sure you go to class.
Professor Ellmore is a really entertaining lecturer. I feel like I learned a lot. BUT the tests are absolute bull. You can study as hard as you want and still not be prepared for the weird curve ball questions. If you want to learn about plants, this class is a great fit. If you want an easy A science credit, drop it ASAP.
Elmer is a very interesting funny professor. He honestly made me fall in love with my plants and I really enjoyed the material more than I thought I ever would. However, one caveat is that his exam questions can be very random, obscure and vague so be sure to know the material inside and out!
Plant development was one of the best classes I've taken at Tufts, purely because of how great Ellmore is. It's not extremely hard, but also not an easy A. His lectures are interesting, clear, and he's hilarious. His passion for the subject is contagious. Definitely recommend!
This was a really dumb class (entirely taught by students, don't take it) but Ellmore is amazing. I wish that he taught something other than Bio so that I could take more with him. He's hilarious, engaging, and really cares about his students' learning.
He is so passionate about plants!! But his lectures were very straightforward. His enthusiasm is definitely worth taking the class for though
Ellmore is the kind of professor who inspires and infects students with his passion. Really funny guy, would take another class with him in a heart beat. Favorite prof at tufts so far!1
His love and enthusiasm for plants is infectious. Test questions can be kind of strange/ tricky.
Professor Ellmore cares more about his subject than any other professor I've yet had at Tufts. His lectures are equal parts informative and joking. He is VERY funny. The three tests throughout the semester were extremely difficult, though. Studying is important, but you really need to have some prior botany knowledge if you want to get an A.
SO QUIRKY. Definite yes if you need the science credit. It sucked that there were only 3 tests and a final, no homework AKA each weighed so much more. But his lectures were so interestingly taught and it was fun looking back on my notes; everything was basically a diagram. I wish bio had been taught like that in grade school; it made so more sense.
Very good lectures. Brilliant guy. Exams are difficult and not always 100% relevant to lecture material, which makes studying returns uneven. Also just horrible to interact with. Not respectful or at all grateful to have an inquisitive student come with questions.
Ellmore made me love plants, best lecturer I've had. Teaches through example studies that are really interesting and all have a point even though they sound like stories. Write down every word he says and know your notes (especially graphs) inside out for exams. Psychedelic teas are great if you go to office hours.
He's a character and incredibly passionate about plants. Lectures are really interesting, but the material can be a bit confusing.
He's wild. It's fun for a couple of classes but I'd imagine it would get tiring if you had to listen to him for an entire semester. Makes plants as fun as they can be. Test questions on the final were stupidly hard in comparison to his exam during the semester.
What a guy I love him. Have tea with him in office hours.
You know how you think teachers are out to get you? I truly believe this guy did not want a single student to pass. Rambles on in lectures and puts the most surprising details on tests. You will never know what kind of questions he will put on the test. Never take a class with this guy.
If you're taking this class for a science requirement, find a different class- do not take this under any circumstances.
George Ellmore is hilarious and an incredible professor. He puts up a facade of being nonchalant and chill, but, in reality, he cares so much about his students' wellbeing. Flowers of the Alps is easy; lots of memorization, but, if you put in just a bit of time, you will have a super fun experience and will get a good grade.
Took this class as a non-bio major. While I enjoyed the material, the questions on the exams can be really random. This course is definitely not an easy A, but you can come away with a solid B if you put in the effort. Ellmore is hilarious and it is an experience to be in a class with him.
Unfortunately this is not the class to take to get a science req (w/a high grade) out of your way. He is very interesting to listen to & the actual material we learned was very interesting, however almost none of it actually appeared on the (curved) tests, plus there is no HW as a cushion. No book & random anecdotes & unknown material tested on.
Ellmore's a fine guy, and passionate about plants. But he's awful with questions. When I asked him any, he'd respond with questions of his own. He acts as if students should know all the content perfectly, even though we're still learning it. He wouldn't even say what the answer to a *practice* test question was. Said it was too bad I didn't know.
George Ellmore is not a good professor. The class was a mess. The lectures were half-hour to hour long rambles with about 10 minutes of real information. Each week had about 4 of these lectures. All the "homework" was entirely unrelated to class content and was both harshly and randomly graded. Test questions on anecdotes. Do not take this class.
Assignments and tests are random. They will cover the seemingly most insignificant parts of the lectures or random things barely related to the lectures. Questions are vague and answers are graded on technicalities in an arbitrary way. Ellmore is obtuse and seemingly determined to be unhelpful. Easy and interesting class made frustrating
Ellmore is passionate about botany, but this class isn't great. The lectures were alright but can drag/be disengaging. The exams have about 20% to do with information from the lectures while the other 80% asks about random, unrelated, or uncovered topics. Homework can go well or poorly. The coursework isn't difficult but passing is, so I dropped.
I think Ellmore flourishes in the smaller group setting of seminars like BIO 1. You're to do two 40-minute presentations with a partner over the semester, but it's a lot easier than it sounds (especially compared to other seminar courses). Otherwise, you're listening to your classmates present their topics, which is pretty cool. Recommend for IR-3.
Don't take his class unless you are crazy smart and can catch every bit of detail in his lectures. Otherwise, you will do poorly on your exams anyways even you spend hours and hours reviewing and studying and have a miserable life. Ellmore is a harsh grader with no partial credits whatsoever. No proper review guide, No proper slides.
I took Professor Ellmores class, Plants&Humanity, thinking it was going to be an easy science credit. I was so wrong. Despite spending hours taking notes on his lectures, his quizzes and tests were really hard and did not test you directly on the things you learned in lecture. I tried reaching out for help but he just sent back a sassy email. Avoid
*Important*: For anyone about to take Plants & Humanity, Ellmore has a different page on Rate my Professor specifically for that class. Go look at that one for more accurate and specific info for Bio10. He writes absurd tests and belittles students who try to get help. Had to reschedule an office hours with him 3 times bc he didn't show up. Avoid!!
Professor Ellmore is a really nice and hilarious professor. However, his class is very difficult to pass because the tests are weighted so heavily and are so difficult. They are made of only 20 questions and include answers from one specific slide in one specific lecture mentioned only once. Also has a very unclear curving method.
Funny guy and not much work, but the exams are quite difficult when compared to the lecture content. That said, I enjoyed the class because it is a truly unique topic.
Do not take this professor at all costs. His exams consist of random examples from lectures with incomplete slides. I did all of the work for the class and he ghosted me when I had questions about course content. It will ruin your GPA, he does not care about his students whatsoever.
Very difficult, confusing, and disorganized class. Tests are the only thing that make up your grade and the material you learn in class is almost irrelevant to the test. No idea how people did well in his class unless they had previous knowledge.
Took Bio10 with no experience in botany/biology. Interesting lectures, Ellmore makes plants fun to learn and he is very passionate about the things he talks about. On Fridays Ellmore brings in a "guest speaker", sometimes plants and othertimes fruits. Tests are challenging, stressing understanding of knowledge. Is responsive to questions. Do take.
Professor Ellmore is a kind and engaging lecturer. He cares about the things he teaches very clearly, and he does an excellent job at explaining biological/environmental topics. No homework/readings, but you need to attend almost every lecture to get a good grade, even if it's early. Most people that complain about him just didn't go to class..
Took this course asynchronously over the summer. Not much homework, but lecture videos are long and necessary. Important to take notes and pay attention!! Lectures are very interesting and prof. sprinkles jokes in throughout the material. Course grade depends on three exams and some small discussion posts. Exams are difficult. Enjoyed taking it!
Flowers is one of the best courses in the Tufts in Talloires program and one of my favorite courses at Tufts. Prof Ellmore is funny and engaging and knows his audience in the Alpine setting.
Kooky guy, very passionate, very funny. Kind of exactly like King Bumi from Avatar the Last Airbender, if you've seen it. He's pretty particular about plants and stuff, so you've got to do your studying, but you'll learn a lot from him. One of my favorite professors ever.
Pretty funny guy—had moments of good laughs and I enjoyed coming to class. Huge drawback was that this class only has 3 grades which are quiz 1, 2 and a final. Let me tell you, the tests are nothing like the lectures they are 10x harder and each question is worth like 6-8 points/100. I personally would not enroll in his classes again.
Lectures were very interesting and he explained things in interesting ways. It was a very cool class and he was really funny and clearly very passionate about the topics. That said, his exams are quite difficult. There's only three and they're your only grades, but the curve is really nice so as long as you go to lecture and study you'll get an A
Ellmore is a great lecturer, his classes are always very entertaining. The class seems like it should be a lot of memorization, but the tests (somewhat unfairly hard) are more about applying the material. Heavy curve (85 could be an A), posts all lectures, and no homework
Hands down one of the most amazing professors I have had in my 4 years of college. He is vastly knowledgeable about everything plant related, and does an incredible job relaying this information in a digestible and understandable way to everyone. He is engaging, funny, light-hearted, and enthusiastic -He is everything you could want in a professor!
Ellmore has earned his iconic reputation at Tufts. He's extremely knowledgable and passionate about his work, and is a reasonable grader especially if you demonstrate interest in the content. He definitely has an interesting sense of humor; he's kinda like a forest elf or something. This is not my area of study, but I would recommend!
NO homework/readings, so the whole class is lectures and 3 exams. But the lectures are all recorded and on canvas. Personally I did well on the exams, but it is stressful to have your whole grade based only on 3 tests. I LOVE professor Ellmore though. He's funny and always has an interesting anecdote to connect the material to the real world.
Hardest part was only being graded on 3 exams. People did well on the exams, but they were confusing and made you apply what he talked about in lecture, which we didn't practice at all. Was ambivalent to help me improve after a bad midterm, and first suggested I drop the class (in November). Ellmore was fun to talk to, and he's an engaging lecturer
The fact that I'm not a 9:00 am type of person and managed to make almost all his classes should be enough to convince you. In the absolutely ridiculous scenario you do miss a lecture, he records all beautiful 50 minutes for you every class. He is the funny, inspirational type of wackiness, a little like King Julien from Madagascar.
