He's a good teacher who likes to get the students involved. He doesn't surprise you on his tests and the only downside is his accent is difficult to understand sometimes.
This is the professor that you MUST take for Orgo II. Otherwise, you're going to have a rough semester. Make sure that you do ALL the assignments and keep up with the class, and there should be no reason why you won't get an A. Very nice, funny guy.
Clearly explains the material, its just a hard course, no getting aruond that. Be prepared and listen to what your TAs and Handy tell you about the test ahead of time. They tell you exactly what to study. Begin studying at LEAST a week before the test.
He has a strong accent, but not hard to pick up on. Really cool teacher that enjoys interaction with students. Class was pretty easy. The book report we had to do was rather long though, 10 pgs. He was very friendly and asked us to drop by his office anytime. I would suggest his section of Univ. 101
he doesn't like to talk much at the beginning of the semester, he lets the peer leaders do a majority of the teaching. He's a great guy, very funny. He's from Sri Lanka so he has an accent but you'll be able to understand him
Best organic chem prof at USC! He knows his stuff, is funny, very clear, & his tests are reasonable. But if you're shy or don't like to be picked on, don't stand out in class! (i.e. fall asleep, come in late, sit in front, or pick out your hair to a fro) he WILL call on you...every class...
Dr.Handy is a GREAT professor. He's challenging, but also VERY helpful. He uses a lecture notebook, so note-taking is easy. He is very easy to talk to (friendly), and he's got a great sense of humor. If you get to know him, he will call you out in class, but its fun-it means that he likes you!
dr. handy has ochem down to a science (no pun intended), its his only class so he's organized, efficient, and very devoted...this class is hard no matter who u take but if u take him u can be guaranteed a less stressful experience than with other teachers (ex. bryson)
Great teacher, super organized. Makes organic easier!
This clase was ROUGH. Not because of Dr. Handy, but because Organic Chemistry is just different to learn from most other courses in my experience. Handy is very fair and seems to want everyone to understand and succeed. He's approachable and willing to help you, better than other Chem Profs!
I will admit that Dr. Handy was organized, but I diffenetly did not find him fair or helpful.
The class is very straightforward and Handy is a good teacher. I was a little put off at first because the lecture is just going over the note packet you have to buy but the subject is difficult (a LOT of memorization) so this repetition is good. I didn't spend enough time going over the material, but you can make an A. No curve + 8 pt scale
Great teacher, bad class. The class is very difficult. Dr. Handy actually cares how everyone does. Fair warning to all of the guys... he only calls on guys, and will put you on the spot. Must study hard and a lot for this class!
a lot of the students this semester found the class really hard. we all thought it was going to be easy but a lot of us got a low grade. if you are planning to take organic chem take lavigne or shimitzu instead. shimitzu gives an easy a while lavigne's class, though a bit challenging,is fun. Lavigne gives you quizzes but it helps you remember stuff
Very difficult professor. He does not seem like he cares for his students. The class is boring too. I do not recommend taking this professor.
I love Dr. Handy!! He is a wonderful professor who does help his students out. He is a little hard, but if you do the problems he gives you will be fine on the exams.
Great professor! Dr. Handy cares about his students. His test are reasonable and if you study you will do well. He gives practice problems and if you do those and know how to do them, then you should be fine. He gives quizes which help to remember the material. He keeps class interesting. He is really one of the best professors I have had at USC.
GREAT TEACHER!!!! REally cares about the students and knows a lot about medical school and classes u need to take....if your plannin on medical school u should talk to Dr. Handy!!! He's great!!!!!!!
I had Lavigne for Ochem 1 and decided to try Dr. Handy's class--best decision I ever made. Dr. Handy is a real nice/funny guy. He'll scare you @ first, but you'll get used to him randomly calling on ppl. The in-class quizzes are only for attendance purposes. The exams are very similar to the practice exams. The notepacket is really easy to follow.
dr. handy could possibly be one of the best things at USC. took lavigne the first time, didn't like it. took it with handy the second time and it was great!!!
By far, the best prof i've ever had! Will do anything to help his students understand the material AS LONG AS HE KNOWS WHO YOU ARE! picks a hand full of students that will be sent to the board almost daily to work problems. If you need a letter of recomendation, med/pharm school, make sure he knows who you are or you wont get one! Go to his office!
One of the smartest individuals you 'll ever meet. Easy to follow and understand, and he's funny. Much easier to follow than Bryson. Study practice tests and don't get behind, if you got through Bryson you'll breeze through Handy and learn just as much.
Definitely picks favorites, got a 40 out the 49.5 average on 1st test. Reads lectures dont teach!Barely ans. ques. in class and dont look at you. spoke to him 3xs, he told me that he wasnt impressed with me getting an "A" in 333 and that I will definitely not get an A on the final because its happened one time in 4 years.Incredibly rude,Dropped it!
I have Dr. Handy for Chem 334 and 334L. I am a chemistry major also. I think that this is the best class to take. He teaches very well, and I think he is the best teacher I have ever had. If you are going to take Orgo2, take him. Go to him if you need help. Study hard! You will learn a lot from him and his class. Phenomenal teacher!
I was in this class this fall and the average on the first exam was not a 49, it was closer to a 65-70. Dr. Handy is a great professor who you will learn a lot from. I'm a chem major, and he's the best professor i've ever had. If you study hard, go to him with questions and keep up you can easily make an A.
Do not take him unless you want to teach yourself. You have to buy a notebook that he compiled with his notes. So basically he just reads over it really fast and doesn't explain anything. He is not clear. He has favorites who know how to do everything, but he isn't willing to answer the questions of the people who don't know what the heck is going
Dr. Handy was great. I hated organic, it's not easy and required alot of studying. I failed the first two test badly, but went to talk to him and he found me a tutor and really helped me. Ended up making a C. Do his take home test and pratice problems they are very helpful!!! Would have done better in this class if I tired and talked to him sooner.
you'll either love him or hate him. he's very helpful, especially if you go to his office after hours and knows you. he's kind and actually cares that his students learn the material. thoroughly study the practice exams. if you aren't satisfied with your grade at the end of the semester, TAKE THE NON-CUMULATIVE FINAL. it will help your grade.
Great teacher. Makes the material very interesting. Talk with him a lot and let him get to know you. Do the practice tests because they are close to the actual test. This is by no means an easy A, so if the effort is put into studying you will do just fine. Dr. Handy knows who really attends class and tries to understand the material.
i am so glad i took handy. i got a C in orgo 1 and didnt understand anything, so i thought orgo 2 would be horrible. i had to study a lot more than i've ever studied for any class before, but if you follow the notepacket that you have to buy (it's ridiculously expensive) you can get an A without having to take the last test or the final exam
knows what he's talking about...but assumes everyone understands on the first try...don't let him get to know you if you don't like being called out in class.he consistently calls out only the names he knows to do practice problems.tests were extremely hard and sometimes his accent and how fast he talks get in the way of understanding the material
Handy is great. He's always available for help and he's very concerned about all of his students. His class is hard but a lot of people make an A. You just have to work your butt off. If you follow the textbook/notebook meticulously, work through every problem, and do all of the practice exams you'll do fine. JUST DON'T WAIT TIL THE NIGHT BEFORE!
Very "unique" professor. His mannerisms are hilarious, but he pairs that with a very good teaching style. If you can't understand the material in class, then his awesome crew of TAs like Jake and Austin will definitely help. I was intimidated at first, but it turned out to be a great class. You can exempt the final too.
Handy is the best. He is funny even if he is not trying to be. The material is very easy to understand but dont expect a breeze. I got an A but still put in more time. I busted my ass for an A in 333 but in this it was not near as time consuming. Go talk to him. He will pick out people in class and call on them over and over.
Dr. Handy is a trip!!!! Lets face it organic is not easy but Dr Handy made organic 2 not so bad. He really helps out the students and wants you to make a good grade. Don't buy the book just the note he has. They are a lot of money but it is wroth it. Dr Handy deff has his favortie students so go by his office from the start.
Dr. Handy is an EXCELLENT professor. He will basically do everything in his power to get you an A in this class. Plus he's incredibly nice and funny. AND, on top of all that, he teaches pro bono. take this class.
Easy class. Easy teacher. He didn't show up much, he just let the peer leaders do most of the work. If you are doing a biology/pre-pharm track then I recommend this section U101 for that.
Handy is awesome end of story
If you struggled with 333, do not expect this class to be a breeze, but Handy will help you a ton. He wants everyone to do really well, and he will do everything he can to help your grade. Every test had bonus points in some way. I was scared to death since I learned nothing in 333, but I was fine and got a B!
not an easy class but gives a lot of help. encourages you to come to office but will call you out in class. I never went b/c I was too intimidated. ended with a b+ thanks to bonus. tests are indentical (for the most part) to hw,study guides, & review. recommended but if you didn't do well in 333 then its up to you. truely interested in his student
Dr. Handy is the man! He isn't easy but is a LOT easier than Dr. Bryson. He really wants everyone to do well and will help you out with anything. He also encourages you to come talk to him in his office. DO IT! Once he knows your name he may call on u in class but he gives you somewhat of a warning if he plans on making you work problems in class
Best professor at USC! Do you want a fun and awesome professor? Then take Dr. Handy!!
Dr Handy is awesome, don't bother buying the chem book, just buy his notes, his tests are very similar to his practice exams. He is hard to understand sometimes and seems like he is flying through material but he harps on what you really need! LOVE HIM!
Best teacher I've had. Really cares about his students. Go to his office, can't stress that enough. Do the homework (which there is a decent amount) and the tests are easy.
Dr. Handy is a very knowledgeable professor and he does care about his students, however he clearly tends to favor some over others. He often seems indifferent when approaching him for assistance and will often ignore you during office hours. He is overall very unprofessional when it comes to dealing with students.
Organic is never easy so don't hope for an "easy" teacher. That being said Dr. Handy has 4 exams and an optional final. He gives quizzes during class so don't skip. Study the assignments and pay attention to questions he reviews more than once. Introduce yourself on the first day and go to office hours with questions it helps tremendously!
Dr. Handy's class is pretty easy. He does not use the textbook but instead has his own notes that you can purchase (a scam I know but worth it). He gives 4 tests and an optional final, along with pop and take home quizzes. I'd recommend him over all the other ochem teachers.
Took him over summer, and he is alright. He will teach you what you need to know, but you have to put the effort in to assimilate it. Department cracking down on him for having too many A students. Encourages students to get to know him, but if you are female and he seems disinterested in talking to you, don't try too hard. TAs are golden.
Took this class during the summer, which was a mistake given that I took the lab and another physics lecture/lab. Inefficient lectures, coupled with not enough time to study lead to me giving up halfway through. Thank god for grade forgiveness. Dept. cracked down on his A% so don't expect his easiness ratings to be accurate anymore.
Took this class over the summer. Im a perfectionist, got an A in 333, and a B in 334 (not okay). I struggled for that B, the quizzes are easy(ish). There's no more 4 exams and optional final. 3 exams and you have to take the final. It's definitely possible for you to make an A, just have no other classes. TAs are God-sent! Take Wiskur if possible!!
Dr Handy is hands down the best professor in the organic chemistry department. Everyone's complaining about the crackdown about too many As well in reality, he hasn't changed much. Organic is organic, it's tough and requires a ton of work-nobody's gonna take the exams for you. If you do the online homework and get help from the TAs you'll be fine.
At first, I thought him to be uncaring and arrogant, but after going to get help for one of the tests, it turns out he's an awesome guy. I struggled in the class at first, but pulled through with an A at the end, required daily studying, but Prof. Handy and the TAs will do anything they can to help if you ask (they're very clear). Buy the notes!
I didn't do well at all, but I suck at this subject. I have to take it though, and I will. It may be taking 3 tries, but I'll make it through, especially with Handy. Orgo is hard as hell, but he helps a lot. He's infinitely better than Dr. Bryson, which is who I had the first time.
Dr.Handy gets some of his students to help out in his personal work, for e.g take care of his dogs when he is on vacation. Sometime we wonder how those students who help him end up with good grades. Thanks
If you put in the work and study daily then this class is very manageable and there is no reason you can't get an A. Go to office hours! It will help.
Hands down best professor at USC. I failed the first exam, went to talk to him about dropping, and he helped me every day to master the material. He truly cares about the wellbeing of his students and is an invaluable asset if you want to go to medical school.
As someone who failed miserably on his first exam I was still able to bounce back and make a B without a single A on an exam. He's entertaining and makes class enjoyable but doesn't teach (TA's do everything). Expect a lot of quizzes! FOCUS ON HANDOUTS AND DO THEM - THEY ARE THE KEY TO SUCCESS (something I wish someone told me before failing exam1)
Buy the notes and go to class with a highlighter. He will give hints on what mechanisms to learn. Synthesis (and retro-synthesis) are by far the hardest parts of the exam. For problem solving KNOW YOUR REAGENTS (make and keep a reagent sheet for each exam). Orgo Chem as a 2nd language explains concepts way better than he does. Few in class quizzes.
There are three steps to succeed in Handy's class. 1: Always go to class. there is a lot of material. 2: take your OWN notes. His notes are not necessary. 3: DO THE HW! This is the key to success in this class. Test questions are similar to the homework. if you can spend lots of time to do the homework, you can ace the class.
Handy is a very interesting man. His idiosyncrasies definitely helped me stay awake in an otherwise boring class. His tests are often very close to the review materials but you will still need to study incredibly hard to do well. His notes were helpful but could be a bit redundantsometimes had minor errors.
Dr Handy is a great guy. he is sort of all over the place with his lectures though. get help from his TA's because that is what he usually has you do when you go for help anyways. Go visit him in his office and get to know him. he will call out people in class that meet with him regularly. DO THE HOMEWORK and know how to do it and you will pass.
Dr. Handy is THE BEST! Absolutely make sure you take him for organic chemistry. I felt so lost in Ochem 1. When I took Handy for 2, it finally all started to make sense. He is engaging and interesting and he really wants you to do well and is more than willing to help you if needed. I wish I could have had him for every chemistry class. Best ever
Dr. Handy is a great teacher, but don't expect to get to know him or get a recommendation letter if you're a girl. It's very clear he prefers boys & avoids calling on girls in class. Tests are very similar to review packetshw so practice those for tests. TA's are the most helpful part of this course! Don't forget you need a 92 for an A.
If you didn't get better than a C in Orgo I then this class is going to be hard. He does a mini review but the way he teaches is on a med school level, and its challenging to follow what the man is saying. Tests are blank and its pretty much straight drawing. KNOW YOUR MECHANISMS BACK AND FRONT. You wont pass if you don't study quizzes and hw.
a lot more material than orgo1, so you'll need to put in more time/effort. if you got lower than a B in orgo1 you will struggle. definitely a very interesting character, but doesn't really teach in class. do lots of practice problems and know mechanisms, synthesis, and all reagents literally front and back and you'll do well. also an A is a 92
To me, his lectures just seemed like guides on what to study on my own. I didn't learn much from his lectures, I did most of the learning on my own. Tests are exactly like the practice/homework though.
Handy is eccentric and sometimes hard to follow, but he and his volunteers/TA(s) encourage students to ask for help. The course is self-taught from his notes online; he is just there to clarify any confusion. Going to recitation can save your grade. Tests are difficult, so study well in advance, and ask for help before you think you need it.
If you don't take Handy for OChem II then you are doing it wrong.
Attending class is not extremely helpful, as all of the notes are online and the lecture is normally just him telling you what to learn and how to do it. Recitation and a large amount of outside studying is where you're really going to learn. That said, Handy is still the best Organic professor. His grading scale (92 and above is A) stinks though
I love Dr. Handy! I am the type of student who really has to try hard in chemistry to understand it and do well and I actually understood his lectures! To pass the class all you need to do is read through the notes, DO THE WORKSHEETS, and go to recitation. Highly recommend & probably the best orgo II professor.
He is an excellent professor and everything you need for the tests are in his notes. Try to print all of his notes because they are very helpful. You should see almost all of the test questions before the test in his practice problems and homework. If you pay attention and go to lecture this class isn't too difficult at all.
I really can't think of one good thing to say about Dr. Handy. He does not care at all if you do well or not in his class. He also choses a select group of people to like the first couple of classes and only lets them come to him for help. I anyone else wants help, you can only talk to the TA, he will not let you talk to him personally. DO NOT TAKE
His TA's and peer leaders are better teachers than him, however his exams are easy if you do ALL his worksheets and quizzes. About 50% of each exam will be synthesis and/or retrosyhtnesis problems. DO NOT sit at the front row, he will pick on you every freaking day (I'm not Mr. Nester)
I took Handy this semester, and I did not like his class. He's a wonderfully passionate professor, but I couldn't stand the disorganization. I just felt like the class aimlessly moved from topic to topic. Anyhow, the best advice I have is if you are borderline grade-wise: TAKE THE FINAL. I did it and it pushed me up two grade letters.
I have never been so stressed for a class in my life. I studied 2 weeks before the exams. He does NOT teach. He puts up slides and goes through them so fast its virtually impossible to take notes. He does NOT like you if you are not one of the top students in the class and won't help you. Study every day and you can get an A, good luck.
He doesn't teach good, test hard only like 4 questions. The practice tests are nothing like his real test.
Dr. Handy is disorganized and sometimes hard to understand, but his TA's every semester will teach you everything you need to know. Every question on his tests are pulled from practice exams, notes, or the take home quizzes which are graded for completion and worth as much as a test. He goes on rants, but the ease of his tests/quizzes are worth it.
Your stereotypical professor who thinks he is god, even though he sucks at doing his job. His TAs are amazing and they do all the work so if you have any questions just go straight to your TA. His exams are straight from all the worksheets, assignments, and take home quizzes so do those multiple times before every exam and you'll be fine.
Dr. Handy is a solid choice for Orgo II. If you go to class and do his take home quizzes and study hard you will be just fine. Half of his exams comprise of problems he has either shown you in class or has given on a quiz. Not to say this class isn't hard, but if you work for an A you can get an A.
I am going to give you the true and honest rundown of Dr. Handy. Unless you are one of the handful of students who he chooses as his class pets during the semester, you may find this class very difficult. I did however make a good grade in this class but ONLY because of the amazing TA's he has. This man is very dismissive of his non-student pets
I thought Handy was a really funny guy, and he doesn't make his exams any more difficult than the practice worksheets. Be prepared to print all of your notes for this class. I didn't care for the classroom environment, he was condescending and it's borderline impossible to speak with him personally.
If you want to be in class where even the TAs think he's an awful professor, you should add this class. Be prepared to print out a 3-inch binder worth of notes and never having any topic thoroughly explained. There will be a lot of self- teaching and condescending answers to your questions. This class is even worse in the summer. DON'T TAKE THIS!
Handy was an okay professor. Get ready to go through at least a ream of paper, because you have to print out a ton of notes. He gives out worksheets and homework that look exactly like the exam. Some questions are even the same. I had to study A LOT out of class because he goes through the notes fast during lecture.
Handy's teaching is decent. He provides a textbook of notes for you to print, but he and his notes are very disorganized. If you Memorize his worksheets, the tests are easy. He is rarely available outside of class, but he has a lot of undergrad TA's who have their own office hours. TA quality can vary. Always check your exams for grading errors.
Handy's the worst professor I've ever had. His lectures are completely disorganized, leaving you more confused than you were before, and it's never clear what the tests or quizzes will be on. He also makes you print about 150 pages of notes for each unit, which are just as scattered and disorganized as his lectures. Overall, HIGHLY don't recommend.
If your take Dr This one. Be prepared laugh your butt off. He is super funny and calls everyone and i mean EVERYONE Mr This one. So if you want to get one his good side go up to him when you need to chat and refer to him as Dr This One. He well respect you and probable give you extra credit. It worked for me.
Dr. Handy actually really cares about his students. His class is difficult as his teaching is limited and you end up just learning on your own. If you work hard, An A is doable. Talk to him in office hours.
AVOID if you can. I hate this class it was the hardest class I have ever taken. you need to study every day and still not getting good grades. Tests are much harder than expected.
Dr. Handy's lectures are straightforward, and to the point. If you really make an effort in his class, you will make an A. That includes following his notes, in-class problems (which often end up on the tests), attending lectures, and visiting his office hours for extra help. When it comes to organic chemistry, you get out what you put into it.
Overall, Dr. Handy's teaching is somewhat interesting, and you'll generally learn what he teaches. He also provides plenty of materials. They aren't organized very well. Unfortunately, it is impossible to talk to him in person outside of class, and his tests are full of errors. However, his TA's can help. A lot of quizzes at first, later not many.
Dr. Handy is a very respected guy and super smart. Organic Chemistry is hard no matter who you have. He is funny in class and gives tons of practice that end up on the exam. Quizzes almost every class so it forces you to study ahead of time. Amazing TAs! His class also correlates well with the lab and lab quizzes so it helps with that to.
Whoever said anything good about Handy is psycho. I loved organic chemistry until now. Handy is so clueless and I really don't think he knows anything about the subject himself. He has been teaching 25 years but my professor last semester who taught for the very first time was much better. Literally do anything to avoid taking him. Worst prof ever
I had him my first semester as a transfer student, he made me want to drop out immediately. I tried going to office hours, he walked past me like I was a ghost. If your goal is to go to medical school, however, he'd be kinda up your alley if you can get him to talk. But I would just take someone else and I mean ANYBODY else.
Dr. Handy is a great professor if you want an easy A in organic chemistry. He doesn't give homework and there is extra credit on every test, which are exactly like his practice tests. Thankfully, the textbook is not required since he has already created a condensed version and put it on blackboard, even if it is a little disorganized.
Took the class in the summer so it was really condensed and orgo 2 is going to be hard no matter what. H is so smart yet a terrible teacher, but gives plenty of disorganized notes that you can teach yourself from. Examples given in class often on exams. Extra credit and quizzes are helpful. Definitely passable, definitely not fun.
Dr. Handy is very nice and funny. He really cares about students. He teaches from his own handwritten notes which he posts on Blackboard. There are Take home quizzes with the answers in the notes, and attendance quizzes. If you understand the quizzes, you can do the test.
Dr. George Handy made Organic 2 a breeze. He explained it to me in a way that was logical and easy to understand. I had to study, but he made it fair. Great professor and a great person.
Dr Handy is the finest chemistry professor @ USC...many years ago he explained 2nd semester Organic so we'll to me that I ended up teaching his laboratory for 2nd semester Synthesis...one of the highlights of my life, I wish only that I would have known it at the time ..I can only thank you Dr Handy & the University ... sincerely, Paul Thanasse
Dr. Handy's reputation speaks for itself. You can read through these and get the gist. What you need to know, though, is he demands consistent discipline through the practice of problems through his personal book, and, if you need it, textbook. Amazing, difficult, but, caring. Put in the work and get your A. What a legend!
