Gives difficult, comprehensive, closed book exams, deducts huge points on papers for picky details. Lectures are interesting but do not prepare for difficulty level of testing.
An excellent professor. Does an incredible job of binding the class around philosophical statements by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Grades essays a little harder then you would think. Do the reading, it's worth it!
Funny, different and interesting. He really seems to pay attention to what you write and responds to it. He's a skinny hippie-type with wears glasses--totally hot!
mr. hart is a most excellent teacher, rather good at making class both educational and entertaining. He brings various interesting visual aids to tie class concepts into historical context. Very, very, very sexy.
very good teacher, explains thing well. take him if you can. essays are a little hard but interesting topics
Best Professor I have had so far.
He really likes to teach this subject. He brings a lot of character into the topics. He really trys his best to make things as clear as possible. Overall he's one of the better english profs out there (i've had 2 others so far)

Awesome professor!
One of the best professors I've ever had! His teaching style is engaging and passionate and also, human, while he is willing to help and encourage outside of class. He's not a intellectual elitist, either - the man is a GENIUS and yet, very accessible.
The greatest! A tough grader but very fair and very helpful. Also a really nice guy.
Literature & the Environment. Professor Hart easily kept the converstation in class interesting. If you're into the environment, the class is perfect for you.
he is the best!!!! he is every students dream of what a great teacher should be. he is very hard, but you will learn a lot and he cares about you!
strict and rigid with rules to a tee--crossing the i's and dotting the t's; what is this nature this environment that. we have nice class discussions though but his nervousness and gesticulations can be distracting. very picky with papers. can be a sound thoroughly analyzed paper but still receive a B
Honestly, not the easiest class I've ever had, but this guy is a genius! He makes poetry, which typically scares me, more interesting, and manages to keep the entire class engaged and informed. Papers are hard, make sure you fully discuss your subject.
Great teacher!! He is very helpful and made the course very interesting. However, a lot of reading and writing in the course and a final covering all the course material.
If you get the chance, I recommend taking his class on the "Beats." Dr. Hart is a wonderful professor who knows how to create an environment in which one feels comfortable and welcome to participate in discussions. His classes are interesting and enlightening. Easily one of the best English professors at CSULB and I've had a lot.
Dr. Hart is a fantastic teacher. The summer school class meets twice a week for 4 hours. It can be grueling, but he keeps the class dynamic and interesting, even through the difficult poetry. He grades hard, but offers a lot of feedback on papers. I highly recommend him.
Class discussion is alright. We offer up our interpretation and he shoots it down if there is no substance, and then at the end he gives his--which is the correct one! I have heard he is a hard hard grader maybe because he went to Stanford and expects us to write like that. Kind of dorky and nervous...
Took his summer course on 20th Century Amer. Lit - the readings were difficult because of the time period they were written in but Prof. Hart made them interesting and understandable. Summer classes can usually drag on forever but he made the time, maybe not fly by, but at least seem relatively enjoyable. I HIGHLY recommend taking his class!!!
Loved this class. Really helps explain poetry and the authors. But you should treat this as a 400 class--two long (5-7pg) papers, lots of difficult reading, and an in-class essay final. If he gives you specific terms in class be sure to use them in answers/essays. Discussions were fun-lets everyone ask questions and never acts like you're stupid.
He's a nice guy and clearly knows his stuff, but he expects his students to reach the same conclusions he does. Too hard of a grader. Great class, but it screwed up my 4.0. I hate poetry now.
The Poet as Hero/Creator/God is overdone. The tragedy is that Dr. Hart believes he is the Poet. It really is sad that he believes that he wields the pen the way Stevens, WCW, and others he upholds. I agree with the last statement of ruining literature with his theoretical bull
Dr. Hart is a genius! I've taken two classes with him and he is the best English professor I have had. He knows his stuff and makes class discussions fun and interesting. Yes, he is a tough grader but VERY fair and you will come out of his class a much better writer. If you get the chance, definitely take him!
Ruined Poetry for me. Hard grader and uses big words theoretically to hide behind when you ask what you can do better. Many students love him because he is an Eco critic and even go so far as hail him KING GEORGE! I do not. I hate poetry now. Thanks Hart You are all HART
Dr. Hart is a nice guy. However, I feel that he expects his students to come to the same conclusions on various literary works, which is not exactly fair. I received a good grade in the class, but I'm not sure if I will ever take one of his classes again. His final is really hard too.
He is a hard teacher. The A is almost impossible to get. He is always worried about us cheating. The midterm and final were comprehensive. CRAZY. He wants his interpretation as simplistic as it is to be the one you give. No self thinking reliantly at all. Would not recommend!!
I had Dr. Hart a while back and think he's a great teacher if you're interested in poetry. Very simple and kind man, pleasant and kinda attractive. I learned a lot and appreciated his down to earth approach - doesn't expect students to read volumes. Recommend.
Great professor! Tough but very smart and fun. The homework helps to understand the larger issues at hand. Despite not loving theory, I ENJOYED this class. If you're having trouble he's very encouraging and helps you get through it. I've taken him for another class and loved that as well. One of my favorite professors EVER!
Great professor and nice guy all around. Knows his stuff and cares about what he teaches.
I worked very hard in this class and tried to do anything the prof. wanted but still couldn't please him. I felt I earned a higher grade.
what? i learned nothing! wrote some of the best summary responses but got non passsing grades! hard to please and even harder to pass
Prof Hart is the ticket for poetry! I didn't even want to take this and he made it fun/clear/interesting. He's passionate, knowledgeable, helpful if you seek him out. Tests= do the short readings, keep up on notes, you'll do great! He's a little tougher on grading essays. No bull. Think & ask his advice--he'll help. Awesome Prof!!
boring as hell. avoid
Dr. Hart is the best!!! He is not hard for people who are willing to put effort into it. He's challenging, but you really feel like you learn a LOT from him. He's a really great teacher. Never boring, never mean.
Hart is one of the top three best professors I've ever had. He's so approachable and so helpful. He's very, very committed to you learning as best as you can. Plus, he's brilliant! And very easy to pay attention to.
Hart is a fair teacher. He grades harsh, but I found him to be more fair than other egotistical teachers I've had who want you to regurgitate what they say in papers. Hart is passionate about poetry and he makes you interested in the subject. Nice guy.
Every English major MUST take Dr. Hart. He is--hands down--the best. Extremely friendly, helpful, eager for you to learn, kind, very intelligent...I can't say enough good things. He is a prof bc he is passionate about teaching, not bc he needs to feed his ego. TAKE HIM!!!
Awesome professor! The best CSULB has to offer!
i learned so much in his class! he is so kind, helpful, and he is simply brilliant. the material can get a bit boring, but he had my attention most of the time. i honestly thought he was a bit lenient on grading, despite what some of the other comments say. must take him!!
Fantastic professor. Very clear and organized. You must read the day's material to get a good participation mark but it's such an engaging class that you want to. He picks novels well. He made me become an ecocritic! Highly recommend this professor.
Dr Hart is hands-down the best prof I've had at CSULB. He cares about his students understanding the material. 696 is a beast of a course. It's all theory, and sometimes the language becomes overwhelming. He will answer any questions, any time in person or by email. He's got a great sense of humor and is overall a great professor.
Dr. Hart is wonderful! I took this class over the summer, and it went by very quickly. He leaves good feedback on the essays. The grade for this class was broken up in four parts: Essay 1 (20%), Essay 2 (30%), Final Essay (30%), Participation(20%). If you show up you'll get the participation points :) His lectures are very interesting!
Very challenging English class in the best possible way. THE best CSULB Eng prof because of his teaching style. Even if you don't do the readings, you learn so much every class. No time wasted. Group work was pleasant! 2hr class flew by so fast every day. Patient, caring professor who builds students up! Rewarding feeling after tackling this class.
I couldn't imagine a better professor for the subject--modernist and post-modernist lit. I actually pretty much hated all the material, but in class, his enthusiasm made it interesting. You have to show up: A) because the material is so difficult to grasp on your own B) because he's so entertaining and fun. He's a tough grader, very picky.
Theory is a very difficult topic that he breaks down into digestible doses. He acknowledges that the texts are hard and he reminds students that it's an introductory class, so we don't have to master any critical theory.
Dr. Hart is by far one of the best professorsif not the best in the English department. Class discussion is entertaining, he is clear in his expectations and how he grades. If a student finishes their program as an English major, s/he has missed out on one the absolute gems at the university.
Professor Hart knows his stuff. He does lecture for most of the class period, but his lectures are so engaging that the time passes quickly. There are only two assignments in the class, so you really have time to get into the reading and discussions without being overloaded with busywork.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He worked hard to make sure we all understood everything and he went out of his way to respond to emails quickly. He cares a lot about the subject and his passion is contagious. He's very encouraging and gives great insight on how to improve your work. Great professor!
Dr. Hart is incredibly fair in his expectations with theoretical concepts. The readings are obviously challenging, but he works to get you to a place of understanding them. The small group discussion every class is so helpful. Hart is a great educator all the way around.
Four short 1-2 page papers that don't need to be formal. One big 6-8 page final research paper and a final exam that's not hard to study for. From what I gathered, he was a really easy grader and just looked for basic understanding of the material. Try to take notes on the lectures. Overall, I think Hart is one of the best in the English dept.
He talked on and on about themes Read some of the selections and ascribed it to these metaphysical ecocritics Most everyone loves him because he grades easy and has no prompts no examples He's a BIG NERD and is nervous and anxious! I wasn't impressed! Don't know how he got out of Stanford WOULD NOT RECOMMEND Never take his class
Quid Pro Quo Hart said this to me He also said that I had no poise and was unconfident I'm a fulltime Professor at a Community College making twice of as much salary as Hart!!!! Booyyaaaaa
ECO-CRITICS lit I HATED all the reading AND in class, he a stickler for cheating and plagiarism that it ruined THEORY and it was boring. You have not choice but to show up Everything is going to be comprehensive Underlines a few sentences and links it to his ECOCRITIC theme NO EXAMPLES He's a tough grader, very very very very picky
The material for this class is difficult to understand and the professor helps break it down well. But he definitely is a hard grader and very picky. i found his critiques on my assignments rude at times and i did not feel like he even cared about me. i would not take another class with this professor and the the assignments were few but lengthy.
Dr Hart read a huge survey of his favorite authors then he lets the class share random ideas reader response leading to some general overview of what American self-reliance or frontierism is. The last remaining moments of class he highlights some text that he privileges there's some assignments and there's the midterm and final NOPE NOT RECOMMEND!!
Very very picky concerned about plagiarism yep very few comments never had examples chose NOT to wear my seatbelt while driving to college everyday because I'd rather perish in a car accident than put up with harts "better-than-you" attitude in the classroom woot woot suggest you do anything else but take a class with hart survey of criticism!
He's alright, if professors were graded, he would be a B-. Not a bad professor, especially when compared to the other English professors CSULB has to offer.
Graded with a sharpie and accused of plagiarism and took it to McIntosh and Chair and a stickler for cheating; grades without any real substantive feedback and has been teaching over 20 years at LB
the worst class ever.Had to read 7 plus books in short amount of times/expected to understand.Along with passages that we also had to read.doesn't even matter b/c he only uses 2 papers & final to determine your grade. If it isn't his way he doesn't want it.I wanted to drive off the pyramid parking to not go.Pls take my advice and AVOID!
easy class if you're a "good" writer. you'll do fine if you did good in college level eng courses or took AP eng classes in HS. i only got a B bc i didn't come to 40% of the classes, so COME TO CLASS and at least skim summaries of the assigned readings. his lectures are a bit boring, it's easy to space out, but he's a nice person and understanding
In this class, doing your readings is important. Quizzes are easy if you do the readings. Essays are easy if you're a good writer. Lectures are a bit long and boring, but he is kind and caring. Attendance is mandatory. Not a harsh grader, but neither an easy A. Do all the work, easy B.
I took 696 in Fall 2023. I also took a couple of classes with Dr. Hart in undergrad, and I always felt that he cared about his students and enjoyed teaching. The reading for 696 is tough, but he has a unique and inspiring way of breaking theory down. He gives thoughtful and constructive feedback, and he helped me grow as a writer/thinker.
There are no models there are no rubrics either he gives a general outline and overview of what he wants it's really up to you to create everything on your own and especially because there are no prompts and no examples he's not very good and the teacher not sound pedagogically
Like the class just not the teacher.
there are right and wrong answers to discussion and if you don't agree with him on the topics, he is dismissive. He seems to rarely have a plan other than letting people talk and often just rambles after It is the most painful class I have ever taken He refuses to acknowledge that LGBTQ people exist, even while discussing diversity
This was a critical theory class he was very neurotic about plagiarism and cheating and he have favorite Eco criticism he's been there 20 plus years and used to teach in Las Vegas and he doesn't really seem to care grades with a sharpie I will take someone else.thanks dr hart!
For a class that meets 3 hours Hart lets students reader response the entire class much like a seminar and then Hart shares like an oracle what are his thoughts which take notes! This will be regurgitated on a midterm or final that's cumulative. There's no scaffolding or models and sometimes no prompts--it felt like the blind leading the blind NOPE
Reading checks checked to see if we read the material; let students share their feedback for 90% of the class and Hart highlighted what he cared about at the end. Poet as Savior and Emerson as God was overwrought and overdone; Never gave models or clear examples and never went over a rubric and sometimes didn't even have a prompt NOT A GOOD TEACHER
Didn't like this class at all. I dreaded every class and writing because of the readings we were given. I knew it would be a lot of writing but the readings we were given and the questions asked for our writing I didn't agree with at all and I wasn't interested in. I would not take this professor again
This was a critical class he was very neurotic overly so about plagiarism and cheating and will report you and he definitely had favorite Eco criticism he's been there 20 ++ plus years and used to teach in Las Vegas and he doesn't really seem to care for us and grades with a sharpie there's no prompts rubrics I will take someone else.thanks dr hart
worst class ever, he expected to get master writing and master papers, very tough grader no rubric no promot, I usually don't have a problem taking literatures classes, but I had to drop this class. Do not take him, you will waste time and money. Let's students talk rather than lead gives so little feedback
Professor fails to support students' success through unfair grading difficult standards and practices incongruent with contemporary teaching practices
If you find yourself in one of Dr. Hart's classes, do NOT be discouraged by his ratings. He is not an easy grader, but if you are someone who enjoys literature and wants to grow as a scholar, you will find yourself thankful to have him. He is extremely knowledgeable and ALWAYS accessible to his students. By far my favorite professor at CSULB!
professor that is passionate about teaching, but isn't implementing his passion in the right way. VERY test heavy, papers midterms and a final. Unclear grading criteria on everything. Some of his criteria for garding were just incorrect. Nice person overall, and I don't think he means any harm but just out of touch. Not too hard to pass, just study
There is a lot of work, there are quizzes, essays, and discussion every week. The essays all have to be at least 6 pages long, with hard grading and can rarely get full credit for assignments. There are many mistakes on assignments and quizzes that make it difficult to understand what the professor wants. I would not take this class again.!!

Barely graded the midterm AFTER I had already taken the final and docked me major points, bringing my A to a C. HART would tell me my work was amazing and then StILL give me a B without a clear rubric showing me what points got me docked off.
Quid Pro Quo Hart said this to me He also said that I had no poise and was unconfident update HART I'm a fulltime Professor at a Community College making twice of as much salary as you!!!! Booyyaaaaa!

He takes forever to grade things. I've turned in assignments that weren't graded until almost a month later. A text book which is great but he still provides articles that are kind of long to read. 10 sentence response for discussion question & journals. Final was answering 3 questions comprehensive so it's not too too bad
Professor makes you take quiz every lecture. Exams are incredibly hard. You must put in incredible effort if you want to pass. HARTless
recommend reading reviews from his classes at csulb since they seem to be more realistic. I took this survey class and though I would say that the work throughout the semester was nothing super hard; he was a pretty pretty harsh grader, disorganized, and his instructions were vague. He seems like a great person but as a professor sadly not so much
This professor is not great or good! Almost every assignment had at least one point marked off because the question he assigned didn't ask what he wanted to see. These petty points being taken off prevented me from maintaining/receiving an A in the class. he does not even perform lectures
POET as SAVIOR overdone overwrought over exaggerated Like oml, kill me. guides and no rubrics fr fr for papers + suck, they lame only tell you basics but most of the questions are better to study on quizlet or unstuck study so not the teachers fault he's boring class, so many papers, wish I dropped ngl. He passionate and like to help tho fr fr fr !
I would extract 1-3 concise sentences from pages and pages of his texts and assigned writing. My peers & I were often very confused about what he wrote for grades and wanted for each assignment. NO RUBRICS NO PROMPTS Take another professor for a normal 696 experience !!
but he cares about his students. It is difficult to follow along in his lectures because he lets class lead for almost the entirety and tests are over the totality of everything covered comprehensive wow in the lectures. There is no clear way to study for anything in this class!!
Doesn't respond to emails. Doesn't put due dates on multiple assignments worth credit. Let's students lead class quizzes on reading goes over readings with themes that are simple and grades w/out rubrics and there's no examples you're left to yourself
Hart is a fair teacher. He grades harsh, but I found him to be more fair than other egotistical teachers I've had who want you to regurgitate what they say
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! He gets upset when you ask him questions. Like he actually gives attitude. It's crazy. And he drones on in his lecture and tends to get lost, so unless you can tolerate boring lectures then his class is basically self-taught. His reviews are not reliable, so make sure you do the homework too. If you're taking him, good luck🫡

Extremly tough marker, class average was C/C+ unfair marking criteria. On the other hand genuinely nice guy and very helpful if you go and see him. Kinda funny too. I wouldn't take his class again only due to
