Interesting Man + Interesting Lecture = Learning
Anyone that uses crack cocaine in a supply/demand example is okay in my book. Funny guy, knows his stuff.
This guy is by far one of the coolest professors I've ever had. First, when he would give us examples in class, he would always do things that would make us laugh and get our attention. Such topics included: drugs, cars, and strip clubs.
He is the best professor I have ever had...he is very intelligent and knows his stuff. He is also very interesting. I have learned so much from this class. He is a really nice guy and is always willing to give extra help.
He is a great teacher.. he is interesting and funny. He is a very nice guy, and he is very intelligent and always willing to help. He isn't the easiest grader.. but he has been by far my favorite professor.
Awesome man, great lectures. Very smart.
I love his class, great teacher.
He explains everything really well and is very easy.
he rambles on about nothing, not structure whatsoever, have tests back to back and if youre a couple of points away from the next later grade he wont adjust it for you..he sucks
Relates economics to real life for us and not huge corporate situations most people couldnt possibly relate to..makes it easy to understand.
He makes classes very interesting and likes prosperity.
Dr. Hoffer is a professor who is passionate about what he teaches and he cares about his students. He expalins things well and uses real life examples.
He was great and very interesting. His class does require some work if you want a good grade.

He is the funniest man alive! He keeps everyone laughing and on their toes. Relates to every day life. BEST PROFESSOR YET!!!!
Sometimes makes it harder than it should be. Very egotistical. Knowledgeable but sometimes strays away from the topic when lecturing. Not very understanding of students.
he's a wonderful man. Though his class is a bit hard it's well worth it, I've learned a lot and his classes are never boring. He's a great teacher w/a passion for econ, if you take him you must be prepared to work! I ended out with a B, I LOVE THIS MAN!
Professor Hoffer Owns. One of the best I've had.
Good teacher but tends ramble off subject like most people said. Sometimes i don't understand what he is talking about because he kind of mumbles a bit. He is entertaining for an old man in his 60's. Homework is easy but tests are somewhat technical.
Found homework to be much easier than quizes/tests. Explains things fairly well. Decent teacher, but hes strict and hard.
This guy is pretty funny sometimes. He'll make you laugh in class. He's very smart and strict. His homeworks are pretty easy, but his tests are so so kinda hard. He breaks things down for better understanding. He's really good.
i loved this man. he's so entertaining n i loved going to class. be warned, u gotta earn ur grade
this class is hard and he takes attendance. his test are a lot harder than the hw. i wouldnt take him
horrible don't take him
Best teacher you will have for ECON.
makes things simpler than the book, interesting and funny. takes attendance, but not on rainy days and such, or gives extra points. gives 10% "free" on tests so its possible to get over 100. hw every week, but it helps you learn
He is really funny! The tests are hard, but go to class and do the homework and you will pass. I would say he is the best you are going to get for an Econ class.
Very Good Teacher .....Just do the homework and dont skip class!!! The test were fair if you just do the homework you will pass the class...he also makes the lectures interesting
Incredible professor - hilarious and makes subject interesting.
Hoffer's Micro/Macro Economics classes should be part of any well rounded VCU education regardless of major.
Had him during the semester of 9/11. Will never forgot his insightful lecture on the day of 9/11. He will make you think about Economics. If you're not interested thinking for yourself, don't take this class. Otherwise, do take this class!!!
A really good teacher. He is able to make economics interesting to learn about. You never really realize how much our lives and our daily habits are driven by economic factors. I personally enjoy his interest in cars. It made understanding what he was talking about much easier.
Makes class interesting.Takes attendance so go to class.Tests can be tricky but he has plenty review classes. Is a great class to learn economics.
He takes attendance, so you better go to class. Tests were not bad, but the final was kind of hard. Some of the things you learn are actually kind of interesting. Either way, I passed so nothing to complain about.
Not a bad professor, but lectures can be painfully boring towards the end of the semester when you've heard his jokes 10,000 times.
His lectures were surprisingly entertaining-- he uses real-life examples. He's been teaching it for over 30 years.. His tests are tough, but if you go to the lectures you wont need to bother reading the text or studying. He offers extra credit with attendence. I got an A.
Had him last semester and couldn't STAND him! He talks in the middle of the class (I sat up front) and he is ridgid in terms of his policies. For example, he wants homework in before class starts, I come in at 8:31 to turn mine in: won't let me. Then he offered an essay for the first 2 chapters. >:(
horrible teacher womaniser stupid jerk thinks he knows it all.....very cheap and talks bad about his wife
Isnt a bad teacher. Very smart guy. His tests are a lil tough since he is picky on free response and M. choice are a lil tricky. Goes off into tangents, which threw me off often. Strict on homework deadlines, will not accept even a minute late. One abscence will definetely throw away your ECchance
VERY EASY CLASS. HE IS THE BEST TEACHER. HIS EXAMS CONSIST OF M.C. AND SHORT ANSWERS WHICH ARE VERY EASY. NOT HARD AT ALL. I DO RECOMMEND TAKING HIM FOR ECONOMICS
George Hoffer is the smartest, kindest and quirkiest teacher in a Columbo kind of way. He is amazingly kind.
The best part of his class are his anecdotes. Although the class can seem to go on for a long time, I still liked it. Tests all essay, and about average difficulty. My average was near perfect for the class. If your willing to do all the work, youll get and A. VERY helpful outside class.
LOVE THE TIES!!
A very great class to let me into Econ. I did not take any econ class before i took his, but I passed with an A with a little bit of hard work.
His teaching style is interesting and it's relatively easy to follow what he says. I'm not too good with economics but he made it bearable. If he taught any more econ classes that I needed I would jump at the chance to be in his class.
Crazy ass teacher but good times.

One of my best Professors

this guy is a riot! i loved how openly frugal he was. i hated econ and the test were impossible but he made it great.
I love this class! It's at 10 in the morning, 3 days a week, and the only time I've missed I had a 103 temperature and strep throat. The lecture is very enjoyable, and he does a good job linking econ to current events and things of interest to help with clarity and make it more fun. His tests are pretty tricky, but so far I have a B in the class.
Awesome!! Hilarious and makes economics interesting. Definately take!
He is an excellent professor. Knows what he is talkin about and makes it easy...all you have to do is oay attention in class n you'll defenetly get atleast a B...do all his homeworks and get easy points.
An amazing class, his daughter meghan is quite an inspiration to him. Uses analogies and scenarios to help students remember information.
Wonderful Professor! His delivery in every lecture was very clear. Uses current economics news and applies it to the course. I'm hope I get into 211 w/an override next sememster :)
Best professor VCU has to offer. Curves exams, offers extra credit, and holds review sessions before each test. But you gotta come to clss, he does suprise attendance checks and if you miss 4 of the days I think youll fail da course..Oh yah, hes extra funny too.
His lectures wer boring and not clear. Nothing he talked about had anything to do with the work. His tests are hard and what you read in the book is nothing like the test. I attended every class and did extra credit and still did poor. I would never take him again!!!!!!!!!
The tests were way to tricky. I ended up with a descent grade, but not for the amount of work I put in, nor for my knowledge of the subject. You can know everything cold going into a test and still end up with a far from satisfying grade. To his defense, he will help you. That doesnt make up for making bad tests though. I don't recommend him.
Hoffer is an excellent professor. He is sort of crazy and jumps around the room but he knows what he is talking about and can explain it well enough for you to pass his test. He also does a big curve.. my grade was a 70 at the end of the year but he gave me an A. I HIGHLY recommend him.
This has to be one of the worst teachers on the plant. He offers no extra credit, yeah a test review session..not all the time, rants on about topics not relating to the subject in which we are covering,I went to class like my life depended on it,took notes, completed HW assignments and when test time things didn't really fall in place.I dont reccom
Hoffer gets sidetracked and goes on for the entire class about anything. He doesn't give clear lectures, or notes. When it comes to test time, be sure he is going to give you detailed questions. Ugh!
Intersting Professor, but sometimes rambles on examples. Built-in extra credit helps. Won't budge on attendance and exam policies, so be prepared to be in class. Overall, Not too hard.
Professor Hoffer was great!! He made economics easy to learn because he would relate the subjects to real world events. It made the topics easier to understand and remember. He was very funny, and he went over everything that was on the test. As long as you go to class and take notes, it's not bad. Also, he didnt make us buy the book:)
This professor is an idiot. He knows what he's talking about, but he cannot teach worth crap. He also talks about UKrops and how cheap he is ALL THE TIME!!! This is a worthless teacher. If you do take Econ I recommend NOT to take George Hoffer.
Yep, this guy's not an idiot, and you can't help but love him because he's so hilarious and does not let you know when he's going to slip a joke or anything. As far as how much economics I learned, somewhat negligible, but still, it's a fun time.
Another easy Econ class. Funny teacher, makes fun of everyone and everything. If you leave early he will make fun of you. Like hearing cellphones go off in class and stops to talk about the ringer if it is cool. Overall great teacher
If you don't do well in his class it is your own fault. Excellent teacher, explains everything very well, and gives very clear and detailed notes. Also hilarious! He's great!!
This is a great teacher even though he may get off track sometimes (a lot of the time actually!) He is a nice guy who will go out of his way to help you out if you show him the same initiative. (Don't skip class, don't sleep in class, etc.) He gives a decent amount of homework, but gives credit for completion not correctness. Overall, good teacher!
pretty much the worst professor i have ever had
He is the best professor I have ever had at this University! His class is the only class I have ever actually wanted to go to. His tests are straight forward from what he teaches in class. TAKE HIM!
He sucks. He is not clear at all, is SO boring and gets off track. His tests have nothing to do with the homework he assigns or whatever he is going on about in class. Just one of those old professors whose been here way to long. Majority of class with fail and he tells you that straight out.
first test = A b/c seemed like everything was straight forward till i got a 40 on my 2nd exam which like 45% of the class failed and then withdrew, 3rd test i failed horribly with 40% of the class failing, i study all my notes, book, and the hw; the test is entirely diff except for a few questions
this class is hard..especially his tests..i studied lecture notes, book, powerpoint notes... still doesn't wrk! i thought it was easy when i took it..but then when the grades came back.. it was like... F! .. hahha.. he's nice..gets off track very easily.. his class is boring.. try to stay awake. :)
Apparently, everyone who has rated Prof. Hoff. is either dense or lazy! This class is not difficult, all you have to do is take notes and read them. He is always on campus, he holds review sessions before all tests, and he takes questions in class. This is my second class with him (both resulting in an A) and would take again at any chance!
Dr. Hoffer makes class very interesting. I like how he uses everyday examples into lecture. i thought the class was hard, but after the first test i studied the online powerpoints, study guides, and other materials which helped a lot.
He does make class very interesting by adding a few jokes here and there. It is also amazing how much he knows about the subject. He ties in the concepts to real world situations. His exams on the other hand were fairly difficult. I studied all the notes that I took in class and that never helped too much.
The guy's great. It's been a while since it took the ECON 210-211 sequence but I remember how interested I became in the subject because of him. All you gotta do is spend a little time reading and you'll get an 'A'. "Dollar store glass"...funny, that pretty much says everything.
Ugh, I hated this class. He would briefly go over a topic without really explaining it, then spend 20 minutes rambling about WalMart. I only did well in the class because I read the textbook. Took attendance every class. Added lots of extra credit to tests though.
Had him for 210 and got an A, but 211 was a different story. I could deal with his rambling for the first class, but in macro his senseless chatter seemed to take over the entire class. There wasn't really anything that I could do to pull up my grade, so I was forced to withdraw. Only recommend if you enjoy a lot of reading to obtain the class info
His lectures are interesting, but his tests are hard. the notes have nothing to do with the test.
Don't take this guy.... test is very hard, and the notes he gave you would not help you do well on the test...
i hate this professor. his tests have nothing to do with the notes or lectures. do not take him unless you can afford to get a D or F . other then that AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Has interesting stories. The tests are hard. Going to any review sessions he has before tests are extremely helpful; they can help improve your test score. Memorizing the material in the textbook in this is class is not enough,to pass the tests you must understand the concepts thought and how to apply them. You should be fine if you do all the ho
might just be the funniest prof I've ever had and he doesn't try to be. he just says politically incorrect things a lot. great teacher though. I learned a lot about the auto industry and monopolies from taking his class. plus he's like a genius or something
Funny guy. Automotive expert. Real world examples. Huge amount of study information on Blackboard. Maybe rambling in class so use blackboard EXTENSIVELY to study. 4 abscences = mandatory withdraw. Do all of the homework, he wants to see effort. Don't leave early, he'll take roll twice. Try to take good notes. Enjoy his off-color humor!
Worst professor I've had so far. Information taught in class was rarely used on the test. Impossible to understand anything he taught and was not very helpful when asked questions after class. Tests are extremely confusing. Only positive thing was curved grades but still next to impossible to get an A.
this guy knows his stuuff. he is th type of teacher that doesnt need, and probably will not use the text book too much. if you go to class every day, you can learn a great deal from this man. plus he is funny and can somehow make an economics class interesting with all his true life stories.
Hoffer is the man! you got to take his class. He keeps you interested with his detailed discussions and querky comments. It's really funny when he rants about the "libs". He is awesomely unpolitacaly correct, he is not scared to say anything. ENJOY!
HE IS GREAT! Makes material very clear through real life events, tends to rant, but its super funny when he does. He really does help you pass the class, just by never missing a class, you get 10 bonus pts. I wish I could take him for 211, but he's not teaching it. You actually have the chance to make an A, thats not possible in other Econ classes
This clas was so boring to me probably b/c i chose a back row seat 1st day of class & he makes that your assigned seat the rest of the year... yeah in a 300 person class!you have to do the homework & make descent grades on the quizzes & tests and you MUST come to class more that 3 absences= a failing grade and he will not budge on your final grade
he's an extremely conservative self proclaimed idiot. he doesnt listen very easily if he's wrong if you wanna challenge him bring proof. he goes on random tangents about how liberals are trying to make america a third world country he is very frustrating if you're a political liberal
Great teacher..wish he was teaching 211..you have to put alot of effort in this class, but once you do then it's a breeze. Study the book and notes. Go to every class and you'll get 10 extra credit points! He makes the class interesting with his stories, but i stayed up until 4am studying all night for the final (very hard). good luck~
Hoffer is an amazing professor! You can tell he loves his job, which makes it more enjoyable to go to class. His class was extremely hard, but if you go every class, you get 10 extra points to your final grade. The handouts are a lot similar to how the test is structured, so I recommend REALLY studying those if you take this class!
He is one of the best professors I have had. He is very funny, and makes econ interesting. I am taking him for 210 and 211, and I wouldn't have it any other way. He is very clear, as long as you do the homework, and coem to class, you will def. have an A. I only use my book for hw, and teh tests are VERY easy. It's all based on hw and lecture.
Excellent professor. He rants on about cars, gas prices, and seemingly useless topics.. but if you ask yourself "why?", then it all becomes clear that he is explaining the subject without spoon-feeding you. If you don't need assistance in learning, are able to think critically, and can make it to class everyday, I highly recommend George E. Hoffer.
Do the homework, pay attention in class, and take notes, and you'll do fine. Funny guy. Goes off subject a lot, but it can be interesting sometimes.
I can't believe some people are saying not to take this class! He is probably one of the best, if not the best teacher I have ever had. I totally recommend this class. His attendance is mandatory, but honestly I would rather go than skip this one!
This tiny 70 year old man surprised me when he first opened his mouth. He's extremely smart, sarcastic, hilarious, way knowledgeable of the course, and insulting in the cutest way: "What do the Koreans say? 'Oso oso!'" (I'm Asian). Miss 4 classes and you fail. Your first seat is your assigned seat, so pick well.
BEST PROF EVER! Honestly I have found only a small handful of outstanding prof, and Hoffer def makes the top 2! Yes his rants can be pointless at times, but for the most part interesting and funny. to get an A=come to class, do the hw, and pay attention to when he goes over hw. Don't leave class early or fall asleep, he will call you out.
Hoffer's class is def one of the easiest I heard horror stories about econ before I took his class. His class is all about attendance, and hw. He is ALWAYS in his office and ready to help. Knows what he is talking about. He is HILARIOUS! If you are lazy stay away, but really you dont have to put too much effort just do HW and pay attention in class
He was a very good professor. He goes off on random topics sometimes and can he hard to understand. But overall would def. recommend him as a professor.
He is really smart, and the way he teaches keeps you interested. Even if you don't like economics he shows you how it is relevant in today's society. He makes funny jokes and is very absent minded. Lots of extra credit for goin to class. As long as you do the HW, maybe look over the book a bit and go to review sessions you'll get an A.
Greatest professor at VCU. Extremely funny. Lectures are great, but not always on topic. Loves bashing liberal economic policy...I got an A in both Micro and Macro with minimum study.
He is probably the best professor at VCU or anywhere else. He is an expert on the auto industry, he can lecture for a whole class period about the Japanese auto industry. Very easy, exams very short answer, but homeworks were somewhat redundant. You learn things in this class that you will never learn anywhere else, b/c he's taught here for 41 years
Professor Hoffer is one of the best professors at VCU. Do your homework, attend all classes, study regularly, and don't fall behind. If you do all of this, you'll be on track to get an A or B for sure!
He is very rude to many people...he can be very funny though, but i studied my butt off and still got a low grade. i read the chapters, took notes, but the tests were very confusing. if we didnt have all that extra credit for attendance and hw i would of failed!...TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!
Old George is a good teacher if you care about the subject of Econ. If not you will find this class unbearable. He tends to repeat stories a lot and he likes it when you know about economic current events (he gives extra credit for that). His notes are poor, but he is a lot better one on one. READ the book and you will get an A.
Those that say they did poorly and instruct you to find another professor: idiots. As far as econ goes, he is THE professor to take. Bar none. He's old (70-80? dunno, he's old) so you have to deal with his absent-mindedness and quirky humor, but the class is straightforward and relatively easy. Take take take. There is weekly hw and mand. attend.
Awesome Prof! Very Funny! Too bad he's retiring from VCU, but he will be teaching at Unv. of Richmond. His review sessions helped on the tests, he gave extra credit for showing up.
Amazing, funny teacher. Tests are really easy if you prepare and pay attention to lectures.
