Lectures are easy to follow. He tells history as a story, with emphasis on transitions and how earlier events caused later events, as opposed to listing dates and events.
Excellent professor! His tests are fairly difficult if you are not up on the subject matter. His lecturtes are literary works. Take notes & don't buy a book. He doesn't use it. Upper level extremely hard!!! Knows subject!!!
Damn good professor. I've always hated history but Makowski makes it pretty interesting. The book is pretty optional though...he explains things VERY well, and his tests are challenging but well-structured so if you miss one day of class you're okay. Great!
He was difficult, but so very smart. I recommend him to everyone - you really will learn a lot.
I've never enjoyed a class so much, great teacher, recommend you take at least one class from him
Very awesome class. One of the best teachers at UNA!
Extraordinary teacher! His lectures are wonderful and sufficent for a "B", but if you want an "A" in his class you have to read the book and use material from it, that he did not discuss in class, on your tests. I highly recommend his classes.... even history of the Balkans. Great insight!!
Wonderful Teacher! I always leave his class with new knowledge. Well structured tests that are difficult if you havent taken notes. I highly recommend him for history!
Makowski Rocks!!!!!!
Thorough Knowledge of Subject matter, and makes it history interesting.
Dr. Makowski is very thorough.
He is absolutely amazing. I definitel;y reccomend everyone to take his class. If you simply show up to class, you'll do fine because even though he covers an extensive amount of the subject, he presents it in very interesting and clear lectures.
Dr. Makowski is a great professor and advisor! And I advise everyone to take his classes, they're great!
Dr. M's classes were some of the most insightful of my college career. If you want to learn a lot and have a professor with a sense of humor, take Dr. M. But it won't be easy.
not so good like burton but he's allright
Dr. Makowski is easily one of the most influential professors I've ever had.
This is one of the best professor's at UNA in my opinion not easy for some people but you learn a lot.
Very tough grading scale.
Probably one of the best professors I've had. If you want to actually learn, this is the one to take. He covers the history, but he also covers more than that. One of the things he does is cover religion, and he relates many things to modern day people. Taking him next semester. He's my favorite so far.
I loved this class. It was the first class I've ever had that really got me engrossed in history. I enjoyed Dr. Makowski's teaching immensely. He's absolutely brilliant, and a great lecturer.
This was an honors class and he is pretty funny. I like how he tells you the whole story of what happened in history but he lectures the whole time. You don't really know what he's looking for in his tests because they are all essay on what he covered in class, which is not always in the book so you need to be there every class, I have a B so far
Excellent teacher. I despise history. He made it fun. I may take him again for an elective. You will learn something in his class. His tests are difficult, but his reviews are helpful, and just studying the notes will get you at least a B.
A GREAT teacher and a WONDERFUL class. I loved this class, and he makes history so interesting and exciting. He gives the course a modern feel, like this history we are learing about is still going on today across the world. I highly recommend him. aAll essay tests come straight from the notes, show up for class, and the book isnt necessary. A+++++
He is an AMAZING teacher, you can't leave UNA without taking a class with him! His lectures are very structured and understandable. Tests all are essay, I recommend taking him for a Tues/Thur class for more test time!
all note class pay attention 20% of the time and your good! plus he's funny in a smart way.
Knows his stuff but is very monotone. Tests are all essay and pay close attention in class.
He is extremely smart. He teaches material from a great prospective of having been raised in the cultures he talks about.
One of the most knowledgeable professors at UNA. Very funny yet always found a way to put me to sleep. I never took notes or paid attention just get the review and look up the terms and be good at bs and you will get at least a C. However if you want an A this class is not for you it is impossible. His test are essays so its up to him grade wise.
It's an honors class and he gives us a lot of extra information!
Going into this class I was not interested in history at all. I came out of it knowing a lot and being interested. You have to be there for class and listen to pass. Tests are all essay but if you listen to the lectures you can pass.
Honors class. Not easy but very interesting, most days at least. If you write fairly well and say clearly what you mean (a good memory helps as well), you can do well. Try hard on the 1st test because you are going to make about the same grade each time. Doesn't require a lot of studying or notetaking, just listen well and enjoy. You can get an A
This was Makowski's first time teaching this class. A 20 page paper is required, and he expects your best. I recommend going to see him and letting him help you. He grades hard, but in the end you end up with the letter grade you deserve.
His lectures are really interesting. His tests are completely essay, half from notes, half from the book. On review day you get into groups and come up with the questions yourself, and Dr. Makowski uses some of them on the test. He'll help you if you're struggling, too. I would recommend him to anyone, but you have to read and go to class!
Dr. Makowski is entertaining and his lectures are interesting, though you won't feel very educated by them. Relatively difficult tests, essentially writing two essays on the fly in fifty minutes and his grading rubric is fairly random. You will need to study from sources other than the book and notes, as he practically expects this from students.
He is a great teacher! I love his class. His tests essays and he grades pretty hard but he doesn't expect less than your best! I highly recommend him. However you should take really good notes. Don't just write what he puts on the board, cause when it comes time to study you need good notes and the book.
Very interesting! I've never been into history, but he really makes it easy to understand and tells it with some enthusiasm. You get to put together your own test basically, and they're all essay questions. Really helps instead of trying to memorize dates and terms.
I don't really like how he grades his essays. I sometimes feel that he's biased. If you struggle with writing essays this class is not for you.
He defiantly knows his stuff. Just don't get on his bad side because he will hold it over you the whole semester. What grade you get on the first exam is what you will get on the next two. If you have problems with essays take someone else because all his test are essays and there is only three test.
Makowski was very thorough in his lectures and definitely knew exactly what he was talking about. You MUST read the text in order to pass this class. His tests were difficult and required hours of studying. He was somewhat helpful, but if he didn't like you, he would let you know. Caution with this one.
This class is very hard and if you don't like writing papers or essays this class is not for you. Also he grades like an English professor so its almost impossible to get an A on his assigned book reports. It is also hard to take his tests because they are all short answer and essay tests.
Great guy! Goes in depth in lectures but doesn't always let you know what he wants on his tests. Some people struggle with him but I found him to be great.
He was easy to understand, but he does talk above your head a lot of the time. And he tends to yell if you are late for class. And you DO NOT want to take this class if you DO NOT like wirting papers. That is the most part of his tests.
His class is super interesting but the tests are kinda difficult. You must read the book and the study the notes in order to do well on the tests. He definitely knows his stuff and if you come to him during his office hours to discuss how you could improve he will definitely help you. Go to him so he learns your name and it will help you overall.
Knows his stuff, but doesn't have the want to help you understand it. I can't pay attention in his class and his tests are HARD!! If you don't like writing then I suggest you find someone else. His tests are essay questions and you take A LOT of notes.
Very interesting class! He definitely knows his stuff and makes History interesting. His tests can be hard- they are essays- but you just need to make sure you take very good notes and study the book. Also, good grammar and spelling really helps! Some people found the class difficult, but I enjoyed it.
Not a class to take if you are looking for an easy A. You will do a lot of writing and you will need thick skin when reading his feedback on your writing. However, this was a great class. I got great notes from Dr. Makowski's lectures. If you enjoy an in-depth study of history then I would highly recommend him.
Dr. Makowski is a brilliant man. I learned so much from his class. However, if you don't like to write or don't work well under pressure, don't take this class. His test are hard if you aren't prepared so read the text book and make notecards. There is no last minute studying for this test. You either study long and hard to know it or you don't.
Dr. Makowski... is one of the hardest professors you will ever have. Test questions are in essay form and very specific. Grading rubric is harsh and at times merciless... However, this class will prepare you for your tenure at university. Dr Makowski will always extend a helping hand to those who seek it. MADE ME THE STUDENT I AM TODAY
Every test is all essay. One 5 paragraph essay and three 2 paragraph essays.
Dr. Makowski is an incredibly intelligent man, and it is very obvious that he has a passion for history. The honors class is not easy. All lecture, so take good notes and find outside sources. I made the mistake of not getting the textbook 1st semester, and barely passed with a B. Yes, his grading is tough, but he wants you to work for it.
I took Makowski my freshman year, and it was terrible. His test were extremely difficult, and I'm still confused how he expected his students to finish his test in 50 minutes. He does have a passion for history, but if you're not a history major, take Quiros or someone else. It's not worth the stress for this history class. I passed with a C.
He is tough, but passable. For his tests, there are 3, two paragraph to write over a topic and one long essay ranging around 5-6 paragraphs. Be sure to go to review day. Use the internet to help you memorize what you are gonna write on the test. It makes it easier and Ive only made A & Bs on tests when using the internet.
Dr. Makowski is by far the best history professor I've ever had. Yeah, he is tough, but he wants you to understand what he is teaching. He isn't like other teachers who let you get by with just regurgitating info. Take him!
Although he comes across as quite stern, Makowski is a genuinely caring man. The key to do well is going to his office hours or asking how you can approve. You absolutely must research outside of class to do well on tests. He doesn't teach from the book, but expects you use its material on tests.
I did not enjoy this class at all. He was a very tough grader, and our whole grade was based on three test grades, nothing else. He wasn't very nice or helpful, and his lectures were very random. He would just pick certain topics and talk about them, and then we were just on our own for the rest of it. His way of doing tests was very strange too.
He tells you what he expects on his tests, and if you stray away from what he wants, your grade will suffer. Go through notes, and study things online. Dr. Makowski makes his lectures very interesting, but he will use the entire 50 minutes. Super great professor and class.
Assigns research papers and tests on the exact same days, so, at best, you'll do mediocre on both. Tests are all essay form, and there are only 3 a semester, which you only get 50 minutes for. Grades HARSHLY. Tells good jokes, though. Seems interesting outside of class, but his in-class policies betray that.
Great Teacher, tough class but you will learn a lot
Makowski is great, plain and simple. He's very intelligent and funny (in a very "dad" kind of way). Yes, his class is difficult but it challenges you in a way that makes you feel like you earn your grade. Talk to him outside of class, trust me. If you like history, take the class; you will learn so much more than you may with other professors.
Dr. Makowski is genuinely a good teacher who cares about his students. He really wants everyone to succeed, but doesnt make it easy to earn an A. He only gave my class 3 exams in the form of papers so you really dont have any wiggle room on your grade. All of his classes are based on giving lectures so be warned.
He is so hard! He only gives like 4 tests and they are difficult!!
He only gives 3 exams in a semester, and they're completely essay. It is difficult to finish them in the 50 minute class period. He makes history easy to understand, and he is super funny. You have to really try to succeed in this class.
I would say that Dr. Makowski is the best professor to take for the Gen. Ed. history requirement. However, if writing is not your strong suit I would think twice about taking him. The only problem I have with the way he does things is there is no canvas for this class.
Loves his job A LOT and it shows; always came in smiling, very passionate, and has lots of stories to back his lectures. He is a tough grader (has very few, big tests; all essay format) but you know exactly what is on the tests, as long as you know what you are talking about-you will pass.
Dr. Makowski is a great history teacher . I have learned more in that class then I ever have in a history class. He only gives 3 exams and they are all in essay form . If you can handle writing alot then you will be fine, otherwise I dont reccomend.
I learned so much in Dr. Makowski's class. He cares about you and your grade, but is also very fair in grading. He makes it known that your grade doesn't define his opinion of you as a person. He only gives 3 grades for the semester and they are all written tests, but you learn how to study and do well on them as you go.
You are not given any opportunities to ask questions. He will begin talking the minute class starts, and he will not stop until it is time for you to leave. He expects you to understand what he is teaching, and he gets frustrated when you don't.
Dr Makowski is a really smart man and knows what he is talking about. However, taking a test in his class is like playing the lottery in how unpredictable his grading is.
Dr. Makowski was one of the best professors I have ever had, if not the best. You should have thick skin when receiving his criticism, but if you develop this thick skin then the rewards from the criticism will more than make up for any hurt feelings. He organizes his lectures in a way that is both profound and accessible. He is also a good man.
Great professor and person, just wasn't for me. You must attend class or you will be completely lost. All tests come from lectures, and the tests are difficult as well as the ONLY grades for the class. For me, he was difficult to keep up with but if you like history (I don't) then you should do well.
Took him for honors and do not recommend it. Three essays for tests, which are the only grades. Holds honors students to a super high standard. I would take the regular class if your not super history savvy.
If you are truly looking to learn and understand history, take Dr. Makowski. His class isn't easy, but very informational. There are 3 tests that are essay-based throughout the semester. I have truly learned a lot. He is happy to discuss any questions with you. He has been discussing current events with our class and it truly helped me.
I took a graduate-level course online. Dr. Makowski is obviously knowledgeable, but his courses are not accessible. He does not use Canvas at all for assignments. Everything is sent as an email. He uploads long lecture videos with no subtitles or timestamps, only assignments are 3 essays with unclear prompts, & he grades harshly & inconsistently.
George Makowski, though obviously respectable and knowledgeable, is an arrogant and entitled man with an intense superiority complex. He's passionate about the subject he teaches, but for all the wrong reasons. He cares more to show off and make it known his intelligence is superior to his students than to actually teach them.
Although he seems like a nice man, Makowski is a hard grader and he definitely has no mercy. The only 3 grades you get are exams. They are in essay form so beware. His lectures are intense and its hard to take good notes in his class. You make the exams yourselves as a class so you know exactly what to study which is the best part.
Dr. Makowski is a very interesting professor. His lectures are quite interesting and enjoyable. He is a very knowledgeable guy on a wide variety of topics. That being said, he sometimes expects too much from students. His only 3 grades are his exams which are (helpfully) written by students. He grades quite harshly and somewhat inconsistently.
His classes are hard and you have to pay attention, however, he is an amazing teacher. As long as you show up and pay attention, you should be able to grasp the material. He can also be very funny without meaning to be, which also adds to the lectures quite a bit. His classes are a lot, but you get a lot out of them. Would recommend.
I do not learn well just from lectures, that was all this class was. It just was not fit for me and my learning style. There was only 3 grades for the whole course which were all essay exams. For me, the exams where very difficult and were never made clear which he would yell at you about. He yelled at us, a lot. Also, do not have your phone out.
He knows a lot about what he teaches. However, there are only three grades in the class, and they are all essay-based exams. He doesn't do anything on Canvas.
Do not take Makowski if you do not respond well to lectures. He does nothing on Canvas. There are only three grades in the entire class; they're all essay exams. The way he graded mine was inconsistent. He teaches his lectures in a way that makes the material very abstract and difficult to follow sometimes. He can get sidetracked easily.
Would not recommend. No grades on Canvas. Only three grades which are all writing exams. Unclear grading criteria. Hard to contact and will not provide assistance or feedback. Makes you write the questions for the exams. Lectures on very niche topics. Does not follow the schedule provided on syllabus. No online presence.
DO NOT take him unless you love history. Only has three grades, and they're tests, which are essays about whatever he tells you THE DAY OF. He has a review day, but nothing you talk about is really on the essay exam. If you ask him things, he treats you like an idiot. He just lectures in class till time to leave, and attendance is mandatory.
Look, if you are a history major, take him. If you are like me who just needed a honors credit and a history class, do not take him. He is a very respected man and very interesting to listen to him. But, that is all I can really say about him. You have three exams on oddly specific topics and prompts. Just take a basic history online and contract.
He is very fun to listen to I really liked being in his lectures. But the tests are hardddddddd. I am a good writer when I write papers online. But you take the exams in class, on paper, theres only 3, he is critical on the information. Don't get the text book. Go to at least the 5 classes bf an exam, though you should go to all. Pay attention.
Dr. Makowski is a nice enough person, but I wouldn't take their class again. You take 3 essay tests, the first two worth 30% and the final 40% of your grade, and that's it for grades. He also gets sidetracked easily and spends too much time on few topics. Class was supposed to cover topics to 1500, didn't make past the third century BC. Do not take
tests consist of writing essays off of memory and 3 paragraphs for 3 questions
i don't even know where to start haha. there's absolutely no tech, no slideshows, no videos, not even a course on canvas. your grade depended on an average of 3 written essays, with the final essay counting the higher percentage. he doesn't even have a specific rubric for the essay, and the textbook was just not worth getting. would not take again.
Basically, swear I'm not exaggerating, but he talks a bunch about how bad kids are nowadays. His tests are to write 4 essays in 50 minutes, no I'm not kidding. Don't buy the book. Don't skip class. His stories are good and he's fun to listen to but steer clear if you're religious. He's catholic but talks about every other religion rather unkindly.
Lectures were interesting, but tests were hard. If you aren't a good test taker or writer then AVOID. He had three tests the whole course, one being the final, and those were the ONLY grades. The tests are writing an entire essay in one class period, AND 6 separate paragraphs on vocab. Also don't get the book. It's overpriced and I never used it.
Dr. Makowski is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. However, he gets sidetracked easily, making it difficult to stay focused during lectures. There are 3 handwritten exams. This course was World Civilization since 1500, yet we started with the Roman Empire and didn't reach the 1500s until the last month of the semester.
