funny teacher, class however is rather dry.
entertaining
He does not believe in textbooks, tests, or the school's grading policy. He gives four quizzes and alot of bonus points. If you go to class you will pass.
TAKE NOTES! it's the only way to pass. Plus, if you get over a 90% test average, you get an automatic A and can skip the final!
good guy, just prepare for the smallest details on the quizzes
Picks the most obscure things to put on the tests... You have to sit through class in order to pass, and it can be quite boring at times!
Can bang out Mozart and Beethoven like it's his job! Oh wait, he's a music teacher so of course it is. Yes, the quizzes are tedious, but going to class isn't a chore, it's fun!
if you are looking for a class where you dont have to spend any money on books then this is a class for you because he doesnt believe in textbooks, however this is NOT an easy A class as i thought it would be
this was probably one of the most boring classes i've had, there's no book so take good notes although its really hard not to fall asleep. and most of his tests are true and false so be prepared.
If you like music, this class is pretty interesting. Take good notes and study them for the quizzes. If you do this, you'll have an easy A, and will be exempt from the final. Good guy.
Take notes. Nice guy though.
He's the man, ask for any song anytime, you got it, used to go hungover, great time, nothing like music with a headache, the good stuff.
Really cool guy. Knows a lot about music. Very easy class - no homework! only 4 quizzes the entire year. You just have to go to class because there's not book. But overall, really good. Study hard for the first four quizzes, get over a 90, and you don't have to take the final. :)
If you are not good at memorizing everything word for word, do not take this class. It is very tedious to sit in class and write 85% of what he says and then go home and memorize it for the 4 quizzes. Take this class if your good at english, history etc, not math and science.
go to class. take notes. for tests just memorize your notes. real straightforward.
He is a really nice guy and its amazing to watch him on the piano. Take really good notes and watch out because the uizzes have a lot of true and false. Class is usually very onteresting. I would highyl reccommend this class.
awesome guy, if u partcipate he will recognize u and all u need for class is a good ear and a notebook. I love it when he plays music for u and he gets really into it so it makes u interested too
This class is boring if you don't have interest in it, but if you do have interest in it than it is an excellent class. Not an easy A but an easy B if you take good notes. Really cool guy, great hair.
Wow...i cant believe how many music nerds gave him a high rating. This class is boring! I thought it would be a joke...but its not! The final exam was insanely hard, stuff not even from the notes. Have a B- but thats only cause of luck and true and false exams. Take His. of Jazz for fine arts cred.
Take this class if you enjoy music!! Go to class, take good notes, and study hard for the 4 quizzes and you won't have to take the final. I really enjoyed this class and Kent is insane on the piano.
i did not like this class! it sucks.
funny guy.. you must go to class, and you must do well on his quizzes. he is a no **** kinda guy
This guy is amazing! I totally recommend taking a class with him!
As long as you take notes, and do well on the quizzes you're golden. Just go to class, take notes, and watch the craziest piano player you will probably ever see just rock out. Kent is a funny guy, especially when he fools around on the piano. Definitely take this class for your Gen-Ed's.
He's a really nice guy and loves the subject, it just sucks that such a good teacher has to teach such a boring class.
He ruined my life!
Haha what a great class. although the subject matter isn't very interesting, he's such a cute old man and he plays piano like nobody's business. Easy, but ya gotta go to class and TAKE GOOD NOTES
I took this course with my tone deaf girlfriend. She got an A and i got D. She doesn't know the difference between a major and minor triad. This guy ego is to big for his head.
Excellent piano player. Very enthusiastic about his subject. Tests are right from the notes and really easy. Don't have to take the final if you do well.
Kent is a musical genius! never thought music could be interesting, but he made it somewhat bareable. go to class, take good notes, study them, get an A and you dont need to take the final.
Easy B or A, but you do have to go to class and take notes and study a bit
Professor Kent is kinda funny to watch in the morning. Hes very dynamic and semi-boisterous. I'm not gonna lie, sometimes he puts me to sleep, but most of the time not bad. You have 2 go 2 class and take good notes or else you will definitely fail.
This man should not bhe teaching trumpet in any way. He does not play any during lessons to demonstrate techniques. His advice is cryptic and usually some meaningless babble that is unintelligible.
Amazing and SO easy. I recommend this to anyone.
Pretty funny, class is a little boring but you have to go and take notes. There is no text book. Goes over everything in class that will be on the exams.
Easy class.Intersting guy, who really loves to teach. There is no textbook, but you have to go to class and take very good notes. Exams are directly from the lecture notes. Exams are true/false and matching...can be a bit tricky if you don't write down every word he says in class. If you have a 90 avg after the 4 unit exams, you are exempt from fin
5 years at URI, Kent is one of only two exceptional teachers I knew there. You have to pay attention, but he makes it fun and interesting. Very dry sense of humor. Took him for History of Music, enjoyed every minute of it!
Awesome guy, great trumpet teacher. Cracks dumb jokes sometimes. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE, he'll know if you don't.
He's brilliant and his love for music is infectious.
What a SHAM!!! This guy should give up teaching all together... He is the reason I switched majors.
Trust me. If you are a 4th or 5th year engineering major who needs a Fine Art. Take theater 101. This class is not easy, and you have to write down every word he says to even have a chance at his fairly tricky T/F quizzes. Turned out to be a nightmare for me. The guy loves music more than life itself. Think about this before you take MUS101
he clearly loves teaching music and makes it enjoyable to come to class.
This class sucks. Don't think it's easy. Rambles on about stupidest things nobody cares about and you have to write down everything because only god knows how he makes up his quizzes. I would rather read pages out of a txt book and be tested on that then listen to him and answer his questions to things he may not even have brought up in class.
Go to every class. If you must miss one, get notes from someone. Right down EVERYTHING he says and memorize it for the quizzes. If you have a 90 or above average, you're exempt from the final.
He's a fun, nice, entertaining guy
this was the worst class i have ever taken in my entire life. not only is he boring, but you can never hear a word that he is saying. nothing he says in relevant to the topic and dont ever expect for hiim to help you out because he wont. extremely unfair grader and expects way too much.
I used to be a band geek and I still found this class pretty boring... only about half the stuff he says is important, the other half is random stories about dead musicians. easy if you take good notes, if you can stay awake to.
Great way to fulfill your fine arts requirement. The class is quite interesting if you care at all about any music created prior to 1950 and he's actually quite entertaining. Not a hard class, but you are graded on so little that a few missed questions on a quiz may hit your grade hard. He's great on the piano and can be pretty funny. No Textbook!
Very easy class, all you have to do is go to class and write down what he puts on the board. Twenty minutes tops of studying and did not get below a 100 on any quiz.
Kent is a genius on the piano and is really helpful. You MUST go to every class because he gives 4 quizzes and a final (each worth 20%). They're all True/False and completely based on notes from class because there is NO TEXTBOOK!
Awesome dude on the piano but not that easy of a class. Have to write down everything because there is no textbooks and the quizzes are pretty damm difficult.
He is one of my favorite professors at URI! He always has interesting stories and is amazing at the piano. Class was always very interesting and his 4 quizzes were not too hard. If you have a 90 avg you're exempt from the final He also can be kind of funny. He knows his music very well and has a passion for it. He is by far my favorite professor!
I loved him. He sits at the piano and plays songs to help illustrate concepts. No textbook, but his quizzes can be tricky and are based on your notes, so be sure to write everything down and study it all. You are exempt from the final with a grade of 90 or above.
Great Teacher!
My class advisor told me I needed to take a Fine Arts course, so I ended up in Kent's. He is, in my opinion, the worst professor I've had yet. You could barely hear him, he went off topic constantly, and he had no textbook. His quizzes are difficult if you have poor notes, and his method of getting your grades to you is horrible. Should retire.
Interesting presentation of music history, a bit of quietness comes with his age, but he obviously knows a lot about music, and is quite passionate. Can give a laugh every once in a while too.
A science major's worst nightmare. If you are thinking about taking this as a Gen Ed, think again. Kent is a nice enough guy, but he needs to retire. Gives horrible notes, and there is no good way to study for his quizzes. Worst class ever.
While Kent knows his music history, the man needs to retire. Quizzes are ridiculously hard if you don't write down EVERYTHING the man says.
Kent is very passionate about music and he knows all there is to know about it, but the quizzes are impossible. I took notes every day and studied before each quiz and still scored very low. He quizzes you on small miniscule facts rather than the big picture. The content is simple and however the quizzes are not.
His quizzes are quite hard as they cover just about every sentence that comes out of his mouth. Expect questions on material he covers for 1 minute as a side note to the main content. You have to basically write down everything he says to do well. Get 90s on the quizzes and you are exempt from the final-definetely worth it.
LOVED this class! Dr. Kent is wonderful! He has so many great experiences that he shares with the class - it's obvious that he loves what he does. You do have to attend class to take notes or know someone who will share with you because there is no textbook. If you study consistently, you will do well. I finished easily with an A.
Currently taking this class and yes you do have to write everything down that comes out of his mouth. He is always willing to help you if you ask. He took the time to meet with me and answer questions that I had. He is very nice; if you attend class, sit close to the front and pay good attention you will get a good grade
Pay attention and take notes in class, then study the night before the quiz. If you do this you'll be fine. It was an easy way to finish off my fine arts requirements. There are four quizzes and if you have a 90 avg then you are exempt from the final. He does take attendance and he says it factors into your grade
Dr. Kent is awesome, humorous, and plays the piano better than anyone I've ever heard. Unfortunately, like everyone else's reviews say, the quizzes are crazy hard because you never know what's going to be on them. There's no book, so you have to go to every class if you want to do well.
A really great and motivated professor. He really loves what he does and it shows. Go to the class with an open mind, sit near the front (3 rows away max) take the notes, and look them over. The quizzes are very simple, just read your notes. He's really nice and smart and if you get above a 90, no final needed. I really recommend this class.
Professor Kent is a nice guy who is passionate about music. However he is not the best teacher. Quizzes are impossible, due to the fact that he test you on the pointless parts of the course. If you do not go to class everyday, take extraordinary notes, and memorize them as well, you will not do well. In other words, avoid taking this class.
This is suppose to be entry level music, and he expected everyone to be majoring in music or an expert. Notes were awful because you can't read them, no textbook to refer to, test/quizzes were impossible because he'd use questions on info he barely talked about. Do not take this class with him,he should only be teaching graduate level.
Literally if you take this class you will go into all of your quizzes blind. It's pretty ridiculous. He's way to devoted to his work but he's so dull. Avoid this class by all means.
George Kent is the sweetest man you will ever come across and is beyond passionate about what he teaches. However his tests have nothing to do with what he goes over in class and the questions he asks on the tests are very vague. The only plus side is that they are True or False so you have a 50/50 shot of getting the answer correct.
He tries hard to help his students with everything but his quiz have NOTHING to do with what he teaches. his not clear at all on the quiz and expects you to know what he is saying.
George is a great teacher and loves what he does. I took notes in class and studied and when the quizzes came around, I was clueless as to what was on them. He expects a lot out of his students even though this is an entry level music class. My best advice is to take notes in class and maybe look up some definitions on Wikipedia.
AVIOD if possible! quiz questions are pulled from thin air!! Went to his office to ask for help I got a 'come back later' twice and no help!! my best advice.. cheat
For the love of god.... Save your GPA and DO NOT take this class. I take my education very seriously and I attend my classes. But this professor is horrible. I have gone to him for extra help, I have spent countless hours studying for his quizzes. The material he talks about in class is completely different than what's on the quizzes.
Pay attention, be there every day, take good notes, ask questions. He's not unreasonable as long as you put in the work. He DOES expect you to have a VERY basic understanding of some musical vocabulary, so that you can understand the concepts he will be teaching, so look things up on wikipedia
Tests have nothing to do with what he says in class and no book is given so your guessing on all questions.
Unless you personally knew Beethoven himself, I wouldn't recommend taking this course. This is clearly NOT a 101 course. Hell, I believe music majors would struggle with this class. Quizzes and the final are what make up your grade, and all quizzes have none of the material to which he lectures. I take my classes seriously, and I have an F.
DO NOT take this class. This could be the worst class to take. I can almost guarantee you will receive an F in this course.
Attendance is mandatory, unless you sit an inch away from him you cant hear him or read off the board, this is suppose to be a basic intro to music but he expect you to be a music major who eat breaths and sleeps music
If you are a trumpet player and considering coming to URI, you must take lessons with Prof. Kent. He is the most incredible musician and teacher I know, and the quality of my playing ability has skyrocketed in the last few semesters of lessons with him. Although he may not say exactly what you want to hear, he is always right. Best Teacher Ever.
Prof. Kent's MUS101 class can be summed up in one word: impossible. I'm a student that cares about my grades and am a Dean's List student--but Kent's class slaughtered my GPA. The quizzes are usually just truefalse, but the questions are largely pulled out of thin air and guessing is done on pretty much all of them. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Kent's MUS101 class is impossible. You can take notes on the lecture, study them for hours, and still fail his quizzes even though they appear easy. The lack of a textbook doesn't make this class any easier. Don't take this class, it's killing me.
You never understand what he is talking about
A lot of people are saying his quizzes are taken from thin air, but that's not the case, if you take the notes from lecture and study them you will be fine. Everything on the quizzes will be in your notes, it's not that hard. Quizzes are all 20-25 T/F or matching. He's also very talented and extremely nice.
Go to Class. Take clear notes and go to him to see if they're up to his expectations. I wouldn't recommend taking the class but it's not horrible. There are only 4 quizzes and the final is worth 1/5 of your grade. If you get an A- for the class before the final you're exempt from the final.
All his exams are True/False, Matching, and listening
Professor Kent is an extremely talented musician and a very nice individual but not the best teacher. Class is just lectures, occasionally he writes down random names on the whiteboard or we listen to classical music. He tells you what to study for the quizzes, but the quizzes are basically random fun facts that you really can't prepare for.
There's no textbook so you have to take really good notes from his lectures. His quizzes were super tough and really focused on the little details he said about things in lecture.. it was really annoying and really tough. 3 absences means you fail the class. attend every lecture and you should do fine on the quizzes.
Hard class. Harder than you would thing Music 101 should be. Does not use a textbook or any type of powerpoint. Have to take very good notes and listen to everything he says. Sometimes confusing lectures where you don't know what he is talking about. Quizzes are all T/F or matching. Would not recommend this class.
George Kent is the greatest trumpet teacher I have ever had. Learned more with him in one semester than I did in three years.
