Cancesl classes, cut classes short, isn't available during posted office hours.
Hard to understand and very monitone and boring
very egotistical. spends half of class time talking about personal experiences.
Unclear, would not explain an answer to someone's questions in class where kids would benifit from the answer, insteads, asks them to come see him after class. Very boring class. Had to drop it cause of him.
Horrible. He can't speak up in class. Always talks about how great his family is. Very difficult to understand him. Tests are way to confusing. Actually, he is too.
For the serious student only!!! Yes, he has an accent..and is all too willing to repeat himself. Encourages students to be great outside the classroom as well as in. Gets easier as the course progresses..hang in there!
The man is a great teacher and only wants his students to be successful. He encourages good habits both inside and outside of the classroom. His accent makes it hard to understand him at times, but he's fine with repeating himself.
I enjoyed his classes. He is a professor for students who put serious effort into thier classes. He has a lot to say if you are willing to listen (though it can be difficult to understand him at times).
This class really opend my mind. Dr. Kim is a fascinating human being if you are willing to get to know him. He is a brilliant man who cares about his students.
Guy was a ****. He failed the whole class on the first exam and told us it was because we were all lazy. What a guy!
just terrible, will belittle you when make valid points bc he is always right. tough tests and is never clear plus you cant understand anything he says
Not as bad as some people say, but a major fault was that he did indeed jump on students when they spoke at times.
Dr. Kim is a great guy who puts much pride and effort into his teaching. For better or worse he holds his students up to a high level also. For the dedicated student only!
Overall, I really enjoyed taking Dr. Kim's class. Dr. Kim expected the highest standards from his students. He wants them to be the best that they can be in and outside of the classroom. I found the exams to be difficult, however, he will help you. A research paper is required from this course.
Very hard teacher. Talks about his family a lot and we are supposed to live up to their Yale educations. He belittles students for points he does not agree with. The class was interesting.
Difficult course. He asks for students to talk in class and then laughs at what they offer: not cool in my book. He doesn't provide detailed information on his expectations on answers on tests. He is an amazing person, but I wouldn't take a course of his again.
complete jerk, you have no idea what he's talking about and doesnt actually teach anything because he only talks about going to a "good" college and go to yale and blah blah blah, yeah didnt learn a thing!
He was horrible. Absolutely rude and inconsiderate...and that's just on a personal level! As a teacher, he is impossible to understand; talks down to his students and is extremely unclear. I would NEVER reccommend this class to ANYONE. ugh.
i had him for two classes back to back at 8 am, i wanted to kill myself, if you take this class you will wish you never did. i cant stand this man with a passion
Worst teacher I have EVER had
One of the best teachers I have ever had. If you actually do the reading, take notes and study like a responsible college student should, you will have no problem. This class is only for the openminded, hard working and most serious of students who are willing to learn. So if you are a lazy and try to pass with minimal effort you will fail. Leave your ignorance and arrogance at the door. Take a chance and don't listen to the rest of these lazy slackers who failed the course.
Never seemed to be much of a problem. Especially in this class. He didn't always make it interesting, but he tried. He went off on tangents sometimes, but it wasn't too bad. He also barely ever spoke about himself in this class.
hardest class to date in college and the most rewarding one. be prepared to try and understand his accent and i hope you enjoy stories about his family/life. very hard grader and he expects the most out of his students. if you don't like working, you should avoid his classes
Horrible teacher, can't understand him because he can't speak English. He changed the syllabus a few times mid-course and he only covered about half of the material. Never take his class!!
Very difficult to understand but this is something that we must adjust to in real life. Very hard concepts to understand if you are not interested.
I don't pay $400 of my hard earned money for a class so I could be condesended by my professor. I am in the class to learn. I found him to be egotistical, arrogant and condesending. I only learned about his ivy league education and his family. That to me is not worth the hard earned money. This is a business. He is working for us.
Very biased, ignorant. I agree, he is very condescending and talks about himself way too much. Quiz questions are confusing and not very well organized. Avoid this class. He is one of MCC's money stealers. The Dean should look into this teacher.
OMGoodness. This man is very wise but I must be honest, he is not very organized. He goes off on way too many tangents. I wasn't pleased with his teaching. I felt the class was very unproductive.
Very hard to understand b/c he gets distracted and off topic easily. Research paper is the biggest I've seen so far (10 pgs font 10). If you need help he'll "try" to help but you'll just be as lost as before. THIS IS A GPA KILLER
His philosophy class started off okay then more then half of the class dropped or withdrawed. He does not explain his assignments well and underestimates everyone's effort. He likes to put the class down, says Koreans are smarter then Americans.
His class is not easy by any means. Note taking skill is a must! You need to make an effort in attendance and also assignments otherwise you'll fail. But, if you get to know him he's very helpful. He tells you how you can improve your work to get a better grade. If it doesn't fit your personality, don't take him. You might really fail...
Very hard grader and test questions are not clearly defined. Very difficult if you mind is more science or math oriented. There is no definite answer to his questions. I honestly think that every answer could be wrong or right depending on how you explain your answer. Its a philosphy class. He can be very rude and understanding at times also.
I couldnt understand a word he was saying
Professor Kim is very challenging, but I did enjoy his lectures and incorporated life experiences. He is very passionate about the subject and knowledgeable. The clarity of what he is expecting on exams and work is not the greatest because he is looking more for interpretation, but if you ask him to explain with example what he is looking for it
Kim is a very good teacher and VERY challenging for those who don't read there textbooks. Personally I like him although at the begning he sounded very harsh grader. To pass this class with a good grade make sure: READ the chapter before going to class, do the Questions at the end of chapter, and take very good NOTES. I am sure you'll do fine :)Goo
I could not understand a word he was saying, he never told us when anything was due, cancelled class randomly all the time and made life in general more difficult.
Professor Kim is extremely knowledgeable, but does not know how to teach and has no business teaching. Rarely available for office hours, cancels class often, and belittles students. Marked man text-book definitions wrong with no explanation. Very VERY difficult to understand. I would recommend any other professor.
Dr. Kim, great guy, really is. but teaching wise, not so much. absolutely horrible teacher. impossible, learn nothing. if you plan on making the deans list, but have this man for a class, forget it. sad, truly is.
Do not take this class unless you can speak Korean! Or at least be able to deal with him telling you that he is Korean and is more American than you are because he has lived here longer. A waste of time and money!
Dr.Kim: i had my doubts about doing well in his class, but i did alright, i was happy with my grade, but i worked. great man, extremely smart. he wants his students to work though. so if ur lazy, do not take a class with him
Worst teacher EVER! I took philosophy as a summer class and he always kept us later then he should have, once he did not let us leave until a half hour after the class was supposed to get out. He also had a horrible way of grading. He would do open book tests, and then he would mark off points for information that I got from the book and was right!
Not a good teacher at all. It's insane to believe that he's head of the Philosophy department. He doesn't teach the book well at all (as I personally read the entire thing), and goes off on tangents about his family all class. And you can't understand a word he says! His grading system is not fair to students and he offeres no extra help.
Extremely hard to understand. We watched films that had little relevance to class. Cancelled about 1/2 of classes. Talked entirely too much about himself, his accomplishments and his family. It's ok to be proud, but he got off-topic too much, then tested us on things he didn't teach!
Hard to understand him. His grading policy is ridiculous. Didn't learn anything. He talks alot about himself.
I was told by everyone I know to drop this class the min they heard who my prof. was. He is the WORST philosophy professor I have ever had. He plays favorites, you can't be absent, and he talks AT you for 3 hours. Absolutely ridiculous. I do not recommend any of his classes to anyone.
He has three masters degree from Yale University. His essays are Hard. His quizzes are Ok but you need to study hard. If you prove yourself to him, he will probably give you a good letter of recommendation. Also remember to seat in the first row and answer questions.
I should have listened to these comments before I took his class. I thought that if I was a good student(3.9 average so far before him) that I could get away with an A. He is the worst teacher I have ever had. There isn't enough room to talk about his atrocities to education. AVOID THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS!
Here is a nice person. i feel that he should stop talking about his family so much, and teach the class. He gave take home exam, explained them , and gave examples. His 10 page paper was a killer, however he gives plenty of time to complete. He needs to open his mouth when speaking for clarity.
Excellent teacher and very interesting and engaging speaker. He does have high standards for his students and may seem overly strict and serious but he also has a great sense of humor and is a genuinely decent and fair man. I was worried after reading the reviews here but glad I took this class. Also picked up some good study habits from him.
After reading the posting was afraid of taking class. however, one great posting of sitting in front seat and ask questions and asked for examples of what he meant, was a great help. the teacher was more than happy to give examples of what he wanted to see in the papers. gave plenty of time to do work. need to be on time& respectful to the teacher.
Terrible teacher. Cut classes short, canceled classes. Always has wise comments and could never get a strait answer out of him. Entire class tried to ask him questions and his answer was re-read the chaper. Worst teacher ever. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
Horibul professor, stay away from him. you cant understand him, he goes off on a tangent, cancels classes when you have a assignment due. does not help you at all. DO NOT TAKE
I read the negative comments about this professor and thought that the people who wrote them were just lazy and stupid. I am a good student and I felt like I could still get an A. Trust me. You can't. He is horrible. He refuses to answer questions and makes rude comments a lot. Please help us end his teaching career and don't take his class.
Great work ethic is not enough. Knew I would be able to earn an A, DIDN'T. Prof. K's outside life interfers with the way he conducts his class. Cancels classes way too much(I was never late or absent). Gives quizzes on material that included mat. that was not covered. Do not recommend his course(s) to those who work hard to keep their GPAs high.
Terrible teacher. I can honestly say I learned nothing in that class. He would talk about his personal life the whole time and rarely about the material. Tested us material that we didn't learn. Only reason he is still a professor there is because he has good credentials.
I took his course awhile back yet he was the only professors name that I remember at MCC. He was awesome and his life experiences made him a reliable source. I worked extremely hard to get a b- but I was proud of myself since he holds his students to a high standard. He made himself available when I had questions. His class is for mature students
I took Buddhist philosophy with Kim, and for being in thus country 30 years- I could barely understand his accent. He wouldn't let people share their opinions on PHILOSOPHY.He was right, and if you didn't agree with him 100% you were wrong. And that was final. In the end, he withdrew me without my telling me and I didn't find out til report cards.
Professor Kim was by far the worst professor I have had in college I will be a senior next semester and I am enrolled in another philo class now and it brings up the horrible memories that now haunt me because of Professor Kim. He is hard to understand and holds you to the level of a ivy league student.Could go on for days of the shameful teachings
Though I got my A for this course, it was still the most miserable class I ever sat through. Lectures had nothing to do with exams, which all required independent research. Prof droned on for 3 hours and 80% of time was not spent on subject material. Also made inappropriate and degrading remarks. Runs over time often.
If you know what is best for your college GPA you will not take this course. Strongly recommend that you find another course.
This Professor made me hate college. You can not understand a thing he said in class nor talks about anything relevant to the subject.I can write a paper about his whole entire life at the end of the semester. If you do not want to fall under academic warning and cherish your financial aid, i advise you to chose the other professor that teaches it.
Excellent-I repeat-EXCELLENT teacher. Prof. Kim is a good example of what a college professor should be. He does hold students to a high standard. From what I saw, the people who were unhappy were those who were expecting to get away with less than their best effort. I appreciated his lack of tolerance for disrespect. Loved him.
Well, it kind of goes without saying. As the other people posting said, he is one of the most incomprehensible, boring, self-absorbed, and unattentive teachers ever. I have no idea how he is still at MCC (or teaching anywhere for that matter). He is preoccupied with his disdain for his childrens' choice of occupation and will tell you regularly.
This teacher is a very tough grader. Although it doesn't seem impossible to get an A, unless you seem him after class hours at least once a week, you won't. It was unclear if he used anything from the text book. This class is only for serious students.
Beware of Professor Kim. Thats all I'm saying.
I can't believe what a terrible teacher this guy is. So much stress caused by him. He is completely unreasonable, can't admit he's wrong, and criticizes people's personal choices. He is unreliable and trying to get extra help from him is pointless. It's nearly impossible to pass. It is pure torture to sit through his boring, accented lectures.
Dr. Kim put minimal thought into our class and openly admitted that he didn't want to be the instructor. He changes his exams a lot and is hardly ever consistent. He talks a lot about South Korea, self discipline and living a "good life." Take his class if you want a true challenge.
He is by far the most rude and unfair teacher I have ever had. Stays completely off topic during class and thinks of him self as the BEST. He graduated from an ivy league school so he expects that same work quality he experienced, to be what the students hand in as well. Worst decision of my school career to take his pointless class.
He makes it clear that he is above teaching at MCC. He even explained that there was a reason why we were all at Manchester Community and not a "real" school. It doesn't matter how mature of a student you are, no one deserves the lack of respect that he shows.
Worst professor I've ever had. He spends most of the class telling boring stories of his life in an extremely quite accented voice. If you offer an opinion in class, be prepared to be insulted. In short, do not take a class with him.
Do NOT take his class,my class was mostly spent by him talking about Korea and his boring life stories.I barely learned anything. He is not clear with what he wants us to do.And makes students give presentations in front of the class, and if it is not done how he thinks it should have been done he is crule and rude.I advise you not to take his class
This was one of the worst classes I have ever taken. He talks only about himself and how smart his two dogs are. I did not learn a single thing. I took the final today, and I am pretty sure I failed. Thanks a lot for nothing, professor. I would highly appreciate you speaking English.
If your going to MCC to actually learn and grow; He is one of the best Teachers their.
He's strict and will hold u to a very high standard, speaks very quietly, with an accent.u have to pay attention. this is not an easy class but it's interesting. It's a hard class but he's a great professor and all you need to do is just PAY ATTENTION. don't take if you just want to get by without doing a lot of work
not a good teacher
For someone so smart he doesnt know how to teach. If this is a good teacher than this country is in for much worse.
The course I took with this professor was pretty challenging. This is the first class I took at MCC where I felt like I wasn't being babied with extra credit and overly-lenient grading. Do the assignments and take the time to learn the material. As long as you're not lazy, you'll do fine. Dr. Kim is soft-spoken so you'll have to pay attention.
Inconsistent, shows no concern for the class, terrible memory, BAD accent. Questions in his tests aren't in the book, handouts or notes. Laughs at me when I ask him questions, then doesn't answer them. Often forgets conversations we've had. Forgets tests. I am concerned that he has dementia, and its unfair for students to pay for his instruction.
Teacher is the worst teacher I have ever. Very uncaring, his test are super hard (whole class was failing) after a few weeks of this he changed the format and expected us to write a 2 pg paper font 10 on how the chapter I read relates to the republic and Lord of the ring. I've never read either of these books and don't plan on it within the week.
Assigned a lengthy paper requiring you to read two novels in a week. To make things worse, he is a very harsh grader and this paper was assigned while other classes were all having midterms.
Professor Kim is a brilliant person. The best teacher? Maybe not. He is very clear with what he wants you to learn for the test. He does his test one chapter at a time. People who say negative things are just lazy and don't want to put in the right amount of effort. You are in college, not elementary school.
HORRIBLE! Made it clear attendance is very vital to class, no excuses accepted. Started the semester off with 30 people, ended with 8. Pushes his beliefs on you which is not okay in a philosophy class. A LOT of reading and writing. Has no problem telling you your ideas are wrong and puts you on the spot.
I learned a lot in Mr. Kim's class, but he is a terrible teacher. 1)Pushes his views on students 2)Lectures get off topic 3)Tests sometimes have irrelevant material 4)Tough presentation requirement, but he offers good presentation criticisms 5)Grading doesn't reflect intro. class 6)Requires VERY good writing skills, above ENG 101 abilities
Not a good professor. His accent was strong, therefore it was hard to understand him. He has an assignment that you have to teach the class about the chapter in the book and he stops you in the middle to say you were doing it wrong. He is very rude and picks on students.
I personally did well in this class, but only because I studied like I never had before. If you read everything assigned and study for every little quiz and test, you can ace the class. Be polite and participate in class and you will get on his good side. He can be hard to understand and it's often unclear what is due when. Good luck..
Nice guy; awful teacher. Said he taught at Yale before coming back here for awhile; wonder what his ratings were there. His lectures are VERY long and VERY cryptic; if you tell him that you don't understand, he'll just explain in an equally, or perhaps more cryptic way. Wouldn't recommend. My saving grace was my actual interest in the subject.
The worst teacher I've had in my college experience. Although he is very smart and I respect him in that regard, teaching is by far not his strong suit. He talks very quietly and at great length with a very thick accent; he's very hard to follow. Acts as though he is above everyone so don't bother asking questions in class.
His Intro to Philosophy class should really be rebranded as an Introduction to Christian Theology. If you are looking for a well-rounded and insightful introduction to the history of Western Philosophy, you may wish to continue your search. Dr. Kim is an intelligent and passionate individual, but his lectures border on proselytization.
One of the worst teachers at mcc. tough grader, only he is right.
If you're looking for challenge, go ahead. This class is interesting but very hard. Professor definitely knows what he's talking about, however, he thinks students are on the same level as him. Speaks very quiet and has thick accent. Best solution is to record him or read book word for word. Or try to find an alternative class.
very interesting class, but he expects A LOT from you, very difficult
I signed up for this course mistakingly without checking this website. I only had one class with him before I dropped it. His accent is very heavy & hard to understand. He assigned loads of homework with one day to do it. When I went to go drop this class, the lady said "good call".. I am glad I dropped it when I did.
Do NOT take a class with this professor. Hes a nice guy, but he is hard to understand. I had written a 7 page paper for this class. I had read 2 books, and used countless quotes. It was a phenomenal paper. Although it was there, my bibliography wasn't in MLA format. As a result of this he didnt read it, and gave me an F on it.
Extremely difficult to understand due to a very thick accent. Dropped after a few weeks because I couldn't get anything out of the lectures. When asked questions in class or by email he chose not to respond with a real answer.
George Kim is quite possibly the worst professor I will ever encounter. His lectures were useless, and it came down to students teaching students during weekly student led lectures. His grading is nonsensical, and he can't follow the syllabus he wrote. I would advise ANY other prof.
Does not follow syllabus AT ALL. First quiz given was on a chapter we hadn't even been assigned to read yet. Does not care to answer questions from students. During lectures he got totally off topic, once talking for 50 minutes ( I timed it) about how to say good morning in different languages (seriously). very unclear grading. Not organized.
I like Doctor Kim very smart man. I would love to take him again. I had to withdraw because I was failing but he is a very honest man. If you dont like accents not your guy thick Korean accent. Dont argue with him about opinions you wont win. If you dont like hearing the same question over and over dont take him. Also speaks very low.
This guy talks a lot! Not even about the subject he should be either. He makes you write in a ridiculous format that makes papers 100% longer than they seem.
Long boring lectures, difficult to understand through a thick accent. Often side tracked, doesn't follow syllabus. The only positive was the assignments like our papers were fairly easy with lots of time to prepare. He prematurely gave us our final with no warning but let us use our phones and books so it was alright.
He really cares about what he is teaching; makes it interesting to listen to.
I missed one class and he decided to give the class a take home quiz. I emailed him asking what I missed and received no response. Came into class the next day and found out about it and told him I was absent. He told me theres no make-ups and its in the syllabus and I will have to try harder on the next few quizzes/tests.
I would highly recommend avoiding taking a class with this professor. They are unclear with expectations. If you are looking for a PHL class with debate and excitement, this is not the class - your opinion will not be appreciated and you will be mocked. The professor is religious so if your viewpoints are not aligned biblically forget it.
This professor expects A+ effort from the class while giving D- effort himself. He cancelled 3 classes completely, Had subs for 2 more, and showed 2 movies. My test grades were 95, 95, 97, and 83. On THE LAST CLASS he tells me I might not pass -missing 1 homework assignment! What!?! He even LOST people's test grades!! DO NOT TAKE!!!
This teacher really cares about his students! The other reviews are probably people who don't want to do basic work or maybe he changed his style His hw is easy and right from the text, you do a straight forward presentation, and the quizzes are short and straight from his lectures. Sit in the front, and schedule at least one meeting youll do great
Make sure you show up to class. He gets upset if you show up even a few minutes late. It's not a difficult class, however, you need to put in more time outside of class than a typical English class. You need to teach yourself the content through your textbook outside of class. 20% of the things he talks about in class pertain to the course material
Prof. Kim is a great educator, but not a great entertainer. It is easy to fall asleep in his class due to his thick accent and quiet voice. However, he knows his material very well and he truly does care about his students. He does make you work hard however I noticed his grades much more leniently when effort is displayed.
Honestly, the worse professor I have ever had. He has a very thick and quiet Korean accent, this is no fault of his, though he is very hard to hear and does very little to speak up so you can understand. He seems to have lived a very interesting life that is 1000x more interesting than his subject matter. BEWARE OF TAKING THIS MAN.
