This is a hard class.
Highly impractical class; very uninteresting. Professor is extremely unclear and unhelpful. Doesn't tell you what he wants and asks the most vague questions imaginable. DO NOT take this class with this professor!
Thanks, professor, for wasting my time. It says something when the class size goes from 27 to 10 over the course of the semester. This guy should be running a library, not interacting with...people. Avoid him.
Not very helpful in learning. Doesn't really teach any of the material. Expects you to figure it out in an intro course and belittles students when they don't understand. Most of the class failed.
This was the worst class and teacher I have ever had by far. He made absolutely no sense and has no business being a teacher. He was extremely wordy and condescending. I would never recommend him nor would I ever take him again.
crap! i should have read these comments b4 signing up for his class. this guy is weird. he sat INSIDE his podium one day. asks questions where there seems to be no right answer, gives too much stupid stuff to do. will not actually answer a question, tries
I had taken this class previously, and they used a dot for AND rather than &. On the test I used the dot out of habit, and gave a KEY as to what the symbols meant. He marked them all wrong. I asked him about it after I got the test back and he said, "NO the symbol is &" So I ended up getting a D. The dot is also the symbol for AND. Horrible prof!!!
He trys to get the students to discover everything for themselves, but he doesn't lead the class to where he wants it to go very well.
This guy is a total jerk which makes things a little more interesting because he constantly belittles people for not understanding the material he doesn't even try to teach. Whoever gave this guy a job, needs to get fired. And the guy who replaces that guy should fire Mr. Knight.
Class started out with about 40 people and by the time of the final, only 12 were left. Didn't explain the material well and expected students to learn it themselves by the book... even though the book taught the materal totally different. Don't even think about asking questions either...he'll just look at you like you are stupid and never answer
I'm sorry about all of these negative comments. I found his class to be very interesting and him to be very capable. My class did the same thing...dropped from 40 to 11 but I think some people were just anxious to protect theire GPA rather than learn. He was very helpful whenever I had a question and did provide an incredibly clear grading system.
first off, this will be a hard class regardless of the teacher. this one, though, makes it harder! he uses a worthless book by a philospher he is in love with and you can't ask questions becuase he will call you stupid. luckily, i already knew this material from math and cs. pick a different section if you have to take this class.
This guys was horrible. He expects the students to know everything coming into class and if not then he will make the whole class feel terrible. Avoid him at all costs.. this is the only class he teaches and he is hardnosed about it.
This class was pitifully easy. I never took notes, studied, read or did anything outside of class. I almost finished the semester with a 100% grade. Granted, it was a couple semesters ago, but I doubt this guy has changed that much. If you struggle in this class you're making it difficult on yourself somehow.
He's a terrible teacher

Not much has changed since 2004. I too was in a class that went from 30+ to 10. Of the remaining students I think 4 were planning to retake the class with another professor. Mr Knight has been my least helpful teacher at BSU. He may understand Logic, but it's obvious few of his students do. I wish I had heard of this website sooner. Never again
Knows the stuff well, just not the most effective communicator. More like a drill sergeant. You learn a hell of a lot from his class, but the effort it takes is extreme. Most students will drop by the end of the class. Just depends on what you truly want out of college, the grade or knowledge?
George Knight may know his stuff, but you are lucky to walk out of his class with even an idea of what he was talking about.
I wish i had heard of this website sooner. knows his stuff but is not fit to be a teacher. No one in my class did good. I worked hard and did all the work i still did bad, and im a straight a student. I would never take a class from this guy again. the book made more sense than he did. He never answers questions, says its all in the book! Horrible!
He seems like a nice guy, but from what I can tell, impossible to get an A, let alone a decent grade. Around 2/3 of the class flat-out failed. I had the highest grade in the class with a B which I think the next closest was a C-. I understood the topic, read the book but the structure of his exams and grading style make for an impossible grade.
This professor was absolutely useless. Listening to him was making the class hard. Once I figured this out, I read the book and stopped going to class and nearly aced the final. If you do happen to take this class, pay attention the book. Much more knowledgeable.
I'd read the book and get an idea of how to do something, when he explained it, it would just confuse me. He explains something one way, but then his online homework would do it differently. He doesn't usually take attendance and says he doesn't dock points if you don't come. Info itself isn't hard, just understanding it from him is I think.
Worst prof ive ever had, doesnt explain anything, expects all students to think the way he does. and if you ask himn a question that he think is basic he will try to make you feel stupid because you dont understand it. never take him.
Homework is very reasonable. There is a lot of interaction. He is clear about what is on tests, and if you do the reading and the homework you will be fine. He was quirky and funny. He is passionate about logic. You cant say that for many people. =)
Terrible teacher. Enjoys humiliating students in sadistic ways if they cannot answer his questions. Grading structure is incredibly flawed, designed to deprive students of the grades they deserve. Course material is already difficult, made more difficult by a teacher that likes to see students fail. I'm a responsible student who ended up failing.
He does a great job spending every class period answering questions and walking you through the problems. Online homework was easy and his grading system makes it easy for you to succeed. He's so enthusiastic about Philosophy that he drops his marker all the time and makes the greatest facial expressions. One of my favorite teachers ever.
I almost got an A. Use the internet "logic tutor" to check ALL work b4 submitting. Get on his 'good side.' seems to grade with bias. Attend all classes...sorry but you should if u want an A.
The worst prof. at Boise State. He seems to love to humiliate people in front of the entire class and he is never available for office hours and never returns your emails. The man knows the subject but has no clue how to teach it. His online Logic tudor is difficult to use and he just has no clue. DO NOT TAKE GEORGE KNIGHT!!
Announced when someone was failing by name
Dr. Knight is by far the worst professor I have ever had to work with. He is rude, he consistently humiliates students in front of the entire class for asking questions, and he obviously grades with bias. He knows the subject but cannot teach it. He clearly does not enjoy his job and takes it out on his students. Avoid his classes.
He is extremely intelligent but has a tough time communicating at a lower level.
Worst prof i have ever had. He can't communicate anything at an understandable level and has a difficult time helping student comprehend what he is asking for. This class requires a lot of memorization and repetition.
I did okay in this class, but it definitely helped that I understood the material without him having to explain it all to me. Definitely attend class because he takes attendance. Do the homework and check your work online when you can. He's very passionate but sometimes hard to get his point. Uses a "GPA" grading system.
Worst professor! The course objectives were incomprehensible and the homework didn't make any sense unless you went to class, which consists of him listening to himself make bad jokes and mumbling. There were many instances of him making mistakes on in-class work and when we tried to correct him, he made us seem wrong
Did a nice job confusing easy material. Made the mistake of leaning on his lectures instead of the book. He needs to be in a mental institution, not a university.
absolute horrible experience. he explains nothing.
Not an effective educator. Grading eliminates homework credit regardless of grade.
His class was easy, and he was good at invoking interest in the subject. His lectures, however, are hard to understand sometimes.
This was such a hard class. NEVER TAKE IT! I am a straight A student and failed his class. His tutor is not helpful either. This teacher may be smart but when he tries to explain something, it just doesn't make sense.
Condescending. Incomprehensible. Useless. I learned next to nothing from this professor. What I know about Logic I learned on my own, with no thanks to him.
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. I honestly think that Philosophy is a lost cause major. Makes absolutely NO SENSE AT ALL. Was definitely NOT worth my time, and not yours either. Knight is a horrible teacher. I even went in for help and that was useless. DO NOT TAKE! It will ruin your GPA, just like what it did to mine!
Go to his tutor, and then the class is much better!
4.0 GPA going into this class but now I'll be lucky to escape with a C, more likely a D or F. Professor is a nice enough person, just extremely difficult to understand. His method for explaining the material left me confused, never enlightened. Tutor was helpful but I needed to see him three times a week to make a difference.
Knight is by far the worst professor I have EVER had in my life. Completely incomprehensible, enjoys belittling students for asking questions, blatantly rude and condescending. He just expects you to understand. I have never had a professor who just enjoys failing people. He is not worth your time nor is it good for your GPA. Positively ridiculous!
The 1st day of class he seemed like a sweet old man who said: "I would love to give everyone As if i could" and I though: this is going to be pie. WRONG! I went to class every day thinking i understood after reading the book but he managed to confuse me. He made us use the book but he didn't agree with the text. Never go to class, use the tutor.
He finds new ways to confuse me every class. He has us read the text but then tells us not to do what the text says. No one in the class knows what is going on most of the time.
This was the worst teacher I have EVER had. I am a straight A student and I failed this course. Not only was he a terrible teacher, but he wasn't a good person either! He YELLED at a pregnant girl in our class (who was due the following week) for not bringing her books to class because of back problems the pregnancy caused her!
class can be difficult but if you go to lecture and pay attention its not that hard all this class requires is looking at the proofs in the textbook using power of logic online really helps. Talk to him about the class as well. the more you show him you are attempting to understand the better the grade you will receive..... AARDVARKS!!!!! haha
This guy is terrible. He enjoys talking to hear himself, teaches a class that can be boring/ material can be difficult to grasp without lack of interest. Any interest initially had he seems to do quite well at diminishing. Everyone else agrees: STAY AWAY FROM GEORGE KNIGHT AT ALL COSTS
First, the grading scale is weird, and disingenuous. Second, it would have been easier to learn Swahili from a German Spanish teacher. Third, He needs to learn how to talk to students and not at students. Fourth, "GPA" Kiss it goodbye. Finally, This man makes logic as clear as a sack of mud inside another sack of mud on a moonless night.BEWARE!
The professor does not explain the material in any understandable way. The textbook sucks, supposedly an introductory book to logic, but does nothing but make the user want to burn the damn thing. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE.
Class is hard in the beginning but his mind is just fried from doing too much philosophy in his life. Once you start to get the concept it's really super easy. He's just one of those people who are bad at giving directions, so it can be difficult for him to get his ideas across how he wants them to. I don't think it's as bad as most people think.
Terrible. Only the top 25% will make it. If you can't make the tutor sessions you will fail. Half of the class has stopped showing up for his class. The class feels dead. Nobody talks or asks questions because the class has no clue what to ask. Teaches at a graduate learning level. Not undergrade friendly and not an introduction. Fair warning!
laugh at his jokes (they are sometimes funny) and do the HW and spend the time you need to practice and understand the subject and you will do just fine. the tutoring the professor constantly reminds you of is also very helpful. just don't hope for an easy grade because this professor will only pass students that worthy of passing...
Failed the class as did over half of my class. Worst professor ever and I fell asleep in his class it was so boring. He maade it harder than it should have been. He called me out for checking my phone when we were in groups and yelled at me to make sure I got embarassed! Worst professor ever AND ruined my GPA, my only class I have ever failed!
absolute worst teacher ever. he set out to find ways to fail people, had no interest in helping the students just in making himself sound smart. Even with getting a question right on a test he found a way to make the whole question wrong. Do NOT take his course.
I barely passed this class with a 'C' in 2007 and am interested in retaking it to raise my GPA. I'm laughing at Prof Knight's reviews because he obviously hasn't changed. Prof Knight was the worst professor I've had. The class average for one of the tests was 48% or so, in a class with 12 people remaining--people dropped like flies in that class.
HORRIBLE! Do not take Phil 201 from Knight. He makes the material so hard to understand and doesn't explain anything. If you ask a question, he takes it somewhere else and confuses you even more. We started out with 30 people and by the end of October only 12 people showed up for class. STAY AWAY FROM KNIGHT!!!
Dr. Knight seems to be a very smart person, he just has trouble communicating what he wants to say. He never goes over the readings he assigns and just assumes that you know them. He gave out 100 points on 3 tests the entire semester. the tutor was good made the class bearable, but overall it was a nightmare.
Personally, I thought this class was very enjoyable. Prof. Knight prepared plenty of sample problems throughout the semester and often took time to help each of us one-on-one. His exams were not difficult (compared to some h/w probs) and his grading system was quite clear. Knight really deserves more credit here. He's a good professor.
worst class i ever attended, went the first two weeks and had to drop it. He didnt help us out at all and would just go ahead and write like we expected we knew what to do, his tutor was the same way, dont take this class
Dr. Knight can be confusing and hard to understand at first, but if you do a little research (youtube videos etc) its not that hard to figure out the basics of the course content. Once you know whats going on he is a lot easier to understand. The tests are pretty easy and straight forward. Get help from others in his class if you are having trouble
The class is fairly simple, you show up, do the readings, and take notes. If you follow that, no problems. He expects you to know the material, but only if he has already taught it. If you stop paying attention you can get lost, easily. He will help any student who has trouble, lots of personal attention.
A bit of an odd class- only 3 assignments. Often left the class not having a clue what is going on in the texts we were reading. Often he would be looking for an overly, out there answer that most people were not picking up on at all. I would not suggest this class, unless you are up for a challenging class (which is odd for it being a 100 class.
Unless you are going to devote a bunch of time and over analyze everything, I would not take this class. Only graded two things and for a philosophy class it was oddly closed minded.
Smart guy, terrible class. I wouldn't recommend it. If you DO take the class, read the texts and take notes on the line of reasoning. Attendance doesn't matter but I showed up about 75% of the time, even though I slept through class half the time I showed up. I think a lot of people failed because I had a B that got bumped up to an A at the end.
worst professor I have ever had.
One of the worst teachers I've had in a long time. Every class is just him asking extremely direct questions about the text with students sitting quietly not sure what to say. I haven't learned a THING from his lectures and next week is the final. Tests are ridiculously focused. If you don't know the exact question, you have no chance of answering.
This class is miserable, he grades three things. attendance is mandatory and you sit in class feeling like you aren't learning a thing. he asks a sleepy class questions that no one knows the answers to. the class is to hard for a 100 level class, and you end up very confused for a philosophy class
Knight was the worst professor I've ever had. He doesn't explain anything he just answers a question with a question and stares at te class until someone answers and then proceeds to tell you that you are wrong. Choose another professor if you take this class.
Unbelievably difficult for an introduction class. Very intelligent guy, but one of the worst instructors i have ever had. You basically need to memorize all four books and he does not explain things (even when asked) well enough to comprehend. Only 3 grades entered all semester…and they were all poor-grade exams. He killed my interest in philosophy
HORRIFIC TEACHER! Was my only option. Lectures to the class with his eyes closed which was really distracting for me. Attendance doesn't give you any points, but if you miss 3 or more it drops you a letter grade. THE WHOLE CLASS, is based upon 3 essay ?'s. The whole 16 week class, and you only get graded on the 3 questions. Class is only 100points
Worst teacher ever in my life! Total of 3 exams graded. Those 3 exams had only 6 questions. If you don't know the answer to those 6 questions you will get '0' in this course. Whole grade depends only on three exams NO OTHER ASSIGNMENTS! Four books but they were cheaper. No attendance grade but if you miss more than 3 class points will be taken off.
I was one of 3 students that regularly contributed to the discussion. 5 other students would contribute less, Nobody else joined in a class of nearly 40. Knight is tough, but most students aren't even willing to participate in a discussion, meaning they probably didn't do any of the reading. Laziness in college should be punished with failure.
I was in a class with 8 people. It seemed I was one of the few people who actually read and contributed. Yeah it was confusing, its philosophy what do you people expect?! But because I contributed he gave me an A. He's a great guy and a great teacher who is willing to give if you give too.
Philosophy is a hard thing to teach and keep students attention with. But this class was very unpleasant to take. Gives vague questions and then waits for about a minute while the class doesn't know what to say. Answers he wants you to know are confusing. Reading Plato is hard enough but he doesn't help you understand it any better. Dropped class.
Do NOT take this teacher!!! Definitely take the online class instead! You'll thank me... trust me. If you are unfortunate enough to take his class, however, a voice recorder is a MUST HAVE for several reasons: he constantly contradicts himself, he doesn't have power points, and he doesn't give "information". It was literally the hardest class ever.
Your entire grade consists of three exams, for which he gives no specific advice beforehand. Even when asked, he won't hint at all what's on each exam, so your only hope of passing is to either memorize the texts front-to-back, or hope that you're lucky enough to have retained the relevant information by chance. This makes it VERY easy to fail.
Like everyone else Is saying, 3 tests 100% of grade. Must memorize every book you read because you don't know what he's going to ask. I thought I was prepared for every test. Turned me off of philosophy just like that. If have other options take them.
This guy is a horrible teacher. The only graded work you do are his 3 exams ,that consist of vague essay questions, which he gives no advice or hints to what he plans to ask. His lectures are boring and there are long pauses of silence when he tries to get the students involved but everyone is lost because he is rambling about nonsense.
Dont take this class, if you value your GPA the don't take this class. 3 tests, 6 essay questions each. Tons of reading, expect to only think what the teacher wants you to think.
this class gave a lot of opportunities for participation, which most of my classes don't.
I wouldn't take this class if you're not ready to read.
Attendance is a bigger deal that some stufents realized. Tests are tough
I created an account just to warn people about this class. I took it last year and it was by far the worst class I have taken in my college career. The tests are near impossible. If he would not have curved them I doubt that anyone would have passed. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. George Knight has no business teaching at any level, although he was nice.
This prof has really high expectations in terms of note taking, and kind of expects you to incorporate lectures and discussions into exams. If you don't have lecture notes, it makes it tricky to answer exam questions. Don't miss class. Attendance is big in this class.
Go to class and follow along to the discussion and try your best to answer his questions in class. You will actually have to put some work in and do the reading. Take notes when he talk about a philosopher's "main idea" in class because that is what will be on the test.
One of the worst teachers I have ever taken. Being in class was like playing 20 questions with him rather than him providing any insight on the text. Your grade is based off of 3 essay exams. Read the books independently and research the philosophers online and you should be able to pass if you can write a decent essay.
Be ready to just be wrong. There is no winning, unless you have his exact same opinion. Don't worry too much, I passed with a 62 and still got a C.
Test are tough if you don't understand the story of philosopher. He is on my "NO MORE CLASS WITH THIS LECTURER" list. He could have change the course format because the whole class is just as hell - reading book and discussion. If you don't read book you will be lost. NO chance of understanding the class discussions without reading. 5 small books.
If you have a choice to take this class - don't. The class involves reading 5 semi-short books and grades are based on 3 essay exams (1 - 20%, 2 - 30%, 3 - 50%) If you don't read or read but don't understand anything you will be lost. He pauses quite a lot to try to get the class to participate but most of class had no idea so we just sit there.
Read the books, do the assignments and come prepared for class, participate in class discussions and study for the 3 written exams and this might get you a B. Avoid this class. Reading is difficult to understand and would need to know it forward and backward for an A.
Worst teacher ever. An absence 1 point taken from tests. You have to read 5 books that are short but you must be able to fully understand. I never paid attention because the class was absolutely sluggish. A lot of the lecture is him talking, someone responding, him saying you're wrong, then waiting for him to say the right answer. Repeat.
Wish I had listened to the reviews before taking this class.
Dr. Knight seems to be very knowledgeable about what he teaches (he has an emphasis on logic and method). There is a disconnect in his communication with the class. I would ask questions and think I understood the answer he gave, but would find out on the test that I did not understand what he had said. The grading criteria was confusing.
This is a stupid class. For CS major I would recommend to take PHIL 101 if your department allows it so that you possibly won't take class with this teacher. only 3 exams and that is your whole grade. 20 percent, 30 percent, 50 percent 3 tests - total course grade. This is the worst class that I have ever taken.
I went into this class thinking it was going to be amazing and cool, but I have ended the semester with finding excuses to either leave class early or skip it entirely, it is very boring. The information and subject is interesting, sure, but unless you actively read the books a few times and understand them completely, you might struggle a bit.
The lectures were unprepared. The absence of a lesson resulted in George not teaching the material he expected us to know. The test would focus on subject mater not sufficiently discussed in class. This instructor struggled to communicate the information he expected his students to know. The grading was far too strict for an introductory course
The books we read were hard to understand and your grade consists of 3 comprehensive essay question tests. The final is worth 50% of your grade and its accumulative. This class is extremely challenging for being a 100 level class. If the class couldn't answer a question we would just sit in silence. Half the semester was just silence.
The ideas talked about in class were really interesting and fun but the tests were almost impossible. Even after reading and studying the books and attending class, I never felt I fully grasped the ideas he would test on. Overall, really interesting topics but too difficult and test dependent to ever take again.
Very knowledgable about the material but lacks the skills to accurately get the information across. Reading is important but sparknotes has all the info. Whole class is based on 3 Tests of 20,30,50%, which are tough. Ask for feedback to get possible grade boosts. Very interesting but a tough. A good challenge.
He is a funny guy. As long as you read the material you will be fine, if you don't understand what you are reading talk to your peers. I felt lost but I think that is just the territory with Philosophy. Don't take if you are uninterested, I thought it was a great beginning philosophy class.
Reading material for the class can be difficult to follow and almost no direction is given on what to look out for when you're reading. There was no introduction or explanation as to what themes we would be looking at during the semester. Class discussion is mostly silence because he is waiting for answers. Great guy, but could use more structure.
To be quite honest, I'm not entirely sure how this man is still employed. He puts more effort into making things unnecessarily difficult than actually helping his students learn. More often than not his lectures are confusing, with him jumping randomly to different topics that have little bearing on what we need to know. Avoid him at all costs.
Teacher is super in depth with his work, but takes time for students to asks questions and is always willing to help you understand. Great class if you want to actually learn material and are willing to participate, if not I do not recommend this one.
Good teacher if you want to be present and participate in the class. Lots of reading and showing up matters. Gives lots of chances for points.
In PHIL209, George is very difficult to understand. If you miss one class, the stuff missed won't be covered again. Asking questions gets awkward because he stares at you and expects the whole class to already know everything he is teaching. Although, he does not get his teaching methods across well. Super hard to learn and retain things.
Simply, he was awful. Your grade rests on three tests on four books, all essay questions. He expects you to do bad, so he curves the final grades. If you get a 64% in the class, it is a C. He does not ask about problems with the reading or clarification of it. He does not give you things to think about, he expects the class to know what he thinks.
Great discussions. Enthusiastic about the material. Really tries to make it accessible and fun. As long as you actually prepare for class and try to participate in the discussion you'll do well. You are graded on 3 tests. Test questions are difficult, and graded tough, but you are graded on a curve. You'll need to work for a good grade.
Great teacher who makes you work for your grade, but provides good lectures and good feedback.
I generally have always like philosophy and understood it pretty well. However his teaching just does not seem to connect at all. I think he is a pretty nice guy and doesn't seem harsh but it is hard to learn in his class, and he has a very strange grading style. Class overall seems uninteresting and a little awkward in a subject I normally like.
George Knight is the worst professor at Boise State. He is incredibly pretentious, extremely arrogant, and down right awful. Do not take a course taught by this man.
For our class he graded us one 3 exams, each exam was 2 essays on 2 different books. He makes you read just about every night and has discussions of the reading in the next class. There are about 3 people in my class of 28 that actually talk, the rest of us just sit there and listen.
As a Computer Science student, I am very confused on why I am required to take this course. Professor Knight makes every lecture unnecessarily complicated. He asks questions based off the reading assigned and goes over it in class. He would ask a question and you reply with an answer and it will be wrong every time. Exams are vague as they can get.
wow, honestly not a good teacher, doesn't want you to win. I feel like he gives everyone in the class below a 60 percent just so he can prove he is smarter than all of us. I actually really love philosophy and normally would participate in class. but he made it impossible to talk without getting cringed out of your mind. Do not take his classes.
George Knight is the perfect stereotype of the pretentious philosopher. You will always be wrong and he prides himself on that. If he anonymously took his own exam he'd likely score a C+. Tests require you to memorize what order the book content came in (not unreasonable), but also the chapters they came from (NOBODY DOES THAT!).
George Knight seems to not want any of his students to pass. He has to switch his grading scale just to have a few students pass. He does not care about the students at all. Even if you ask for additional help he will not give it. He also does not give you your overall grade until the end of the semester. The LA is the only way to get help.
This was one of the worst classes of my life. Knight just talks all class, makes no sense and contradicts himself repeatedly. I went to LA sessions along with tutoring. All you are graded on is exams. He literally told us he expects us to memorize all six books. When grading tests you are expected to write his opinions and interpretations.
Be prepared to read all of the assigned works then map out, memorize, and comprehend a list of arguments presented in such works. Only then to be graded on 2-5 response questions, where you are to be concise with your answers. hope you memorized the right segments. 20 points on the first test 30 on the second 50 on the final.
This professor is awful, worst one yet. ALWAYS contradicting himself. Will never help you. And expects you to have the same opinions as he does.
Three essay tests will be graded the entire semester. 20 points on the first test, 30 on the second, 50 on the final. Expect to be graded on his opinions, interpretations and the memorization of all his definitions. George Knight failed to communicate the information he expected us (students) to know for the exams. No extra credit opportunity.
This class was probably my most favorite class I've ever had at college. The subject was interesting, he was helpful, and it overall was just a very fun time. I enjoyed going to this class every morning.
If you have to take a PHIL 102 class, he might not be a good option. His lectures were hard to understand, and his teaching method was so boring and sometimes they would make you feel sleepy.
This class is awful. The prof is confusing, rambles on and on, and makes it more confusing rather than clarifying the text. Tests based on HIS interpretations and understanding. Take a different class if needing this credit.
I'm sure Knight is a kind man and is knowledgeable about the content matter but his style of teaching given the material make it impossible for students. He doesn't try to help people understand and goes off on hour long tangents, contradicting himself and making things that could be answered in a sentence convoluted and uncessarily complicated.
Wild Dude
This class is extremely difficult to pass and he contradicts himself constantly during lecture. He offers no help if you need it and expects you to agree only with his opinions on Philosophy. I would recommend avoiding this class at all cost.
This class is essentially a literature class. You will read a few books and be expected to have them memorized based on HIS interpretations, as he will not tell you what questions will be on the exams. He will say what things "might" be on there, but usually, they're not on there. Most of class is spent in silence waiting for someone to answer a ?
If you expect your introduction to philosophy to be a gentle ride, you're in for a rude awakening. This course is difficult - the readings are difficult, the concepts are difficult, speaking about the material is difficult because everything has to be very precise. This being said, the mountains most worth climbing are the steepest. It's worth it.
I took this class in Fall of 2017. Knight is the definition of a professor who does not understand what makes intro students tick. His teaching style is something that should be saved for 300+ level courses and not an intro class. Most students have no clue how to interpret the material presented because it is their first philosophy class ever.
His lectures are very difficult to follow and unorganized. His tests are extremely difficult to pass and it's very hard to retain anything he talks about in class. He grades harshly and doesn't answer questions well in class. He teaches the class like we all have prior knowledge of advances philosophy. I would strongly recommend not taking it.
This class is hard. George contradicts himself constantly and the materiel and readings are difficult. The TA and the study sessions are the only reason I was able to understand what was going on. Other then that George was a weird, goofy guy who's personality made the class interesting.
At first I was worried I wasn't getting the material. So before the first exam, I asked if we were going to recieve feedback. I got back the graded exam and had feedback that rivaled the length of the essay I turned in. Even though the class was new and challenging, I was always certain I could get further guidance from this professor. Great class
Philosophy is open to interpretation right? Nope, if you think differently than what the prof thinks you are wrong. Tons of reading, and very confusing topics. Harsh grading. Asking a question in the class results in a 20 minute lecture that vaguely answers the book. 75% of the class dropped, in the past few years only 5 students have gotten A's.
George Knight teaches his 100 level classes at a 300+ level. He expects his students to already have an extensive understanding of philosophy. When he tries to explain the material he does not do a good job. Often times his class is more confused when leaving then when they came in. Poor at answering questions and giving feedback. Not worth it!
This prof grade on his opinions and his opinions alone. To me, philosophy was supposed to be a discourse built upon the foundation of ideas introduced in lecture and textbook reading. In reality, this course was an opportunity for the professor to fail two thirds of his class because they did not parrot his opinions into essay form for his tests.
He was the worst professor to get my 1st semester of college. He was terrible. He didn't care about any one else's opinions. It's his way or the highway. I dreaded that class every single day. I only went because you get extra credit at the end of the semester for attendance. DON'T TAKE HIM. Take ASL if you need a FH credit.
Prof Knight worked well with all of us students to accommodate the fact that our lives have been flipped upside down during the pandemic in the spring of 2020. He does not leave much room for interpretation of the literature so I can see why this frustrated students, but truly his insight was very helpful to me. He is a genuine nice guy!
His lectures were boring and did not help in relation to the course content. He often will expect students to have a good understanding of philosophy, even though this is an introductory course. It is hard, and even rare, to get an A in his class. He has a lot of knowledge, but grades biased to his opinion. Quizzes were open note, but irrelevant.
George is incredibly passionate about what he teaches. He's a great guy, but he's a difficult professor and this is a difficult class. READ the textbook, read it read it read it, or else you will be so lost. This class is hard, do not expect to put in little effort, the learning snowballs as well, so don't skip chapters or class.
His Philosophy 101 class is far from an introduction. Lectures do not help with understanding and he pretty much just wants you to have his view of philosophy as opposed to it being a discussion. Listening to his explanations was like trying to understand a different a language and he contradicts himself often. Avoid this class if you can.
George's lectures often reach past the end of class, his classes lack active learning, focusing on assigned readings. Limited study aids are available, and his handwritten essay exams are tough and rigorously graded. Do not take his classes unless you are extremely interesting in the topic. he teaches 100 level classes at a 300+ level difficulty.
Honestly one of the strangest classes I've taken. His lectures just confuse you more the more he talks. He also makes very strange motions that are incredibly distracting. He's not helpful if you have questions and will not be lenient regardless what happens in your life. He also only grades a few tests which are impossible to get a good grade on.
Don't take George Knight for philosophy 101, He taught for a whole semester and not once explained what philosophy even is and his handwriting is almost illegible.
Whatever you do don't select Mr.Knight for phil101. So confusing that I received 8 out of 25 on my mid term (which was on the high end of the class) when I met with him one on one to figure out how to be successful he rambled on for two hours and in the end told me to "Read the book with your ears" You will learn nothing from this little man
Professor Knight's PHIL102 class is a challenging one, but Unstuckstudy can help with test prep. The lectures are confusing, but the textbook and study sessions are worth attending.
