I went to the Live Kahoot! in his asynchronous course. We all had a great time learning at 9pm at night. You can tell he cares and that he wants students to succeed.
He is very organized and really teaches you the material by providing lots of questions and answers. Lectures are concise. But, not for those looking for easy class. But, if you follow the steps he provides and pound away at the questions and answers you will get it and do well. I loved his class albeit was on-line this year.
I don't usually leave reviews but Dirk was so good I had to. This course was asynchronous and extremely easy. Dirk is a great teacher, I hate economics but he taught so well I was actually learning the material! Every week we only had an inquizitive and kahoot to do. Didn't read the textbook at all, you only need the lectures to pass.
Mateer is a great teacher and he knows his econ very well. Lectures are easy to understand, asynchronous, and only a weekly inquizitive and kahoot to do per week which took around an hour. Very light workload. Tests are 40 questions multiple choice and timed, but if you do the lectures and practice problems, then you should do fine on exams.
He's ok. His tests have alot of mistakes. Kahoot and practice test questions are way easier then his actual test. Not very receptive to feedback, said he would have Extra credit and never did. Not very forgiving with student help/support. His textbook is really good, one of the best textbook's I've ever read in helping you understand a concept
304K was online this semester so I had to do a lot of independent learning but Professor Mateer and Team Econ were very helpful in office hours and I learned a lot.
Most of your grade is dependent on two exams with lots of mistakes in them and content that is harder than whats taught. Hes not very receptive to feedback. I read every chapter and watched every lecture and ended up with an A-. I would not recommend this class, it is nearly impossible to get an A.
There were only 2 tests given that were 35% and 40% of your grade. I studied for about a month for the last test and barely scraped by with a 70 on it - and my grade was above the average score (showing you just how unnecessarily hard the tests were). Practice questions/kahoots/inquisitives were NOT helpful at all. Do not take this class at all.
Two poorly made exams with content that is incredibly harder than what is taught. He does not give good feedback if any. I read every chapter he required text, watched every lecture, and tried multiple times to receive help. Do yourself a favor and do not take Dirk!
Lectures were ok, but everything else is terrible. I used every single resource available to study for the second exam for weeks ahead of it and only barely passed. The test was so much harder than all study material and practice questions. He was unaccommodating and didn't give a curve when the average was barely passing. Find a better professor.
I took his class this semester. Dirk is an amazing guy. The exams are harder than the materials in class. I highly recommend joining the office hours. I only joined him in the second half of the semester, and my grade was better on the second exam. Be ready to read a lot and push yourself to work!
Professor Mateer was a great professor who was very knowledgeable in microeconomics. Be prepared to read because you will not do good if you dont read. This class had an SI session with it, so attend the SI sessions to ensure that you understand the topics. There were only a few people who attended the sessions, and they were very helpful.
Dirk seems like a cool guy but the class is not it. Only one micro class available this semester so it's 1100 students in there and they run it like a TV show. If you look on your course schedule and see only this one available, don't do it. Save yourself the headache and take it at a community college
dirk is smart- but he never breaks it down for those of us who don't understand. then there's always kahoots during class for a grade- some of them over material you just learned and are now having to answer in 30sec. read the textbook, you'll at least pass. work load is just read/quiz once a week. i wish i just took this at ACC.
I speak for everyone when I say this... prof G. Dirk Mateer is awfully unfair when it comes to participation points. I take his internet econ class where there are a ton of technical issues and he isn't understanding of that at all. The system for participation grades is unfair and it can and will take a toll on your grade.
The absolute worst class I have ever taken. Unnecessarily difficult for no reason. It was the only web based Econ class here but I would suggest not taking it at UT. Professors are not empathetic towards internet situations and are very cruel when it comes to grading. Take this at your local community college.
Dirk is a cool guy who explains content in a clear and concise way. Class as a whole isn't bad at all. Just read the textbook and rewatch lectures before exams and you'll be fine.
ECO304k with Mateer is not bad at all. My class has 1000+ people and its online so there has been some technically difficulties every once in a while but other than that, the class is very straight forward. Just read the textbook, attend class, and go to the SI sessions if you need it. You will most definitely be fine if you put in some effort.
Dirk is an average professor, but the web-based ECO 304K section didn't help. The class has over 1100 people and they run it like a TV show. At least 50% of class time can be spent watching dumb video clips from TV shows that have little to do with content. Kahoots are an important part of the grade. Tests are worth a lot but not so hard if you read
Classes are fun and making learning easy. Dr. Mateer and Dr. Acchiardo really simplify the economic concepts to make it easier for beginners to understand. However attending lectures is absolutely necessary for this class as there are graded kahoots that can actually be somewhat stressful. (They can pop up any time during the lecture!
Dr. Mateer is passionate, high energy, and a great lecturer. I took his class online and found that if you throughly read the textbook and somewhat pay attention during the lectures this should be an easy A. The textbook chapters are about a hour long 1-2 chapters per week. 3 tests which if you study you'll do well. I definitely recommend Dirk.
I took the online ECO 304K class taught by professors Mateer and Acchiardo. Content was very easy but still went pretty fast. Taught in a video stream format so it felt one-sided and difficult to communicate back. The one TA in the chat carried. Got an A but only showed up to class for participation points, textbook was more helpful in learning.
Mateer is great. I was able to meet him at his office hours in August, and he's a knowledgeable and funny guy. The class is literally just copy and pasted from the book (that he wrote). The book is easy to read, so if you read the book and do the Kahoots (for online class), you should pass easily. The tests are also straight from the practice tests
Dirk is fine. I managed to get an A, but I did a vast majority of my learning outside of class. All the lectures were online and honestly seemed kind of pointless, often showing clips from random movies or doing demonstrations that had little to do with the material. I think the exams are fairly straightforward as long as you study.
Seems to be a nice guy, but the way the class was set up was pretty bad. Lectures were not very useful - lots of pointless "demonstrations" and such that were mostly a waste of time. You have to show up to lecture because of the kahoots - otherwise, I wouldn't have. Pretty much all of my learning came from the textbook and khan academy
Class was a disaster at the very beginning as they adjusted to the sheer size, but it was pretty solid after. Midterm and finals worth 75% of total grade. Provide study guides and practice problems. Gotta buy the book its a digital version. Entertaining lectures and they give a lot of stuff away for the in person audiences(cash and other gifts).
This class was formatted online with kahoots counting as part of your grade. It was taught jointly with Charity Achiardo and often these two professors failed to explain the concepts in depth. There were no papers, only 3 tests that weren't bad if you read the textbook and did the practice problems. Prof. Dirk does answer questions if you email.
I took this class Fall 2021. Only 3 exams, but worth 75% of total grade. No essays. Make study guides and do practice problems. Gotta buy the book ; it's a digital version ($75?). My class had 1000 people in it. You must read the textbook and take notes if you want to make an A. Kahoots in every lecture. Professor does give out prizes for particip
If you didn't read or pay attention in class, you will not do well. I didn't think this class was taught as in-depth as they should have. Honestly, I feel like they cared more about the Kahoots than anything else in lectures. I decided to switch out of my econ major after this class...
Lectures were pointless, but Kahoots were graded. I made a 70 on the first test, went to office hours, and he said that they had to make the questions harder than what we saw on Kahoots/practice tests to discourage cheating because we were online, yet they repeatedly told us just review those to do well on the test. Profs were unaccommodating& rude
Only cared for the credit of the class. Dirk was a really good professor and explained concepts very well. Lectures did help a lot, especially Kahoot exercises. The textbook understanding was vital and exams were pretty hard but also confusing at times.
One of my best classes yet even tho I was worried bc of older reviews. The lectures are very helpful and are sort of required for the kahoot and google form grades. The homework is easy and helps you learn. Exams are straight from homework, practice exams, and lectures. Just keep up, pay attention, and do your work. Easy A, he's a great prof!
Solid guy, if you attention in class (take some notes lol), review the kahoots, and finish your inquizitives, this class will be a breeze.
Required to attend lectures and purchase an online book. In-class assignments(18%) weekly inquizitive assignments(12%) midterm exams(70%). The exams are simple; if you fail it is because you did not study enough. He is a great prof and I really enjoyed his teaching style. Also, you can win money and prizes for participation throughout the semester.
Professor Mateer puts in more effort into making his class enjoyable out of any professor I have had so far. Tests are clear if you participate and follow along with the lectures, kahoots, and homework.
He is a beast and makes it to where it is easy to understand a fairly difficult class. One of my favorite classes I have ever taken and I have never looked forward to going to a class more.
Dirk is a great, enthusiastic lecturer, sometimes the lectures themselves are a bit scattered, but overall a decently easy class if you put in just a bit of time to study.
lectures are rlly engaging with fun activities like kahoots & google forms every class. u get extra credit just by going to class and doing kahoots and u basically get half points by showing up and participating. easyyy hw and exams are directly from the material u learn. actually encourages u to learn and im always excited to go to class
This has been so far one of my favorite classes at UT. The professor is really passionate about the class. He does a great job engaging students with class with the kahoots and the forms that happen during the class, which I think help a lot to see if we are learning. Tests are not that hard if you do homework, pay attention during class and review
This class is super interesting, Dr. Mateer really cares about helping you learn. In class participation is a part of the grade but you can miss a month and a half and still get full credit. Very clear about what will be tested on each exam. BUY THE TEXTBOOK! The material gets more difficult so he stops covering everything after exam 1
Really easy class. Exams were online, open-note, and multiple-choice. You do have to attend class because of Kahoot quizzes, but they are curved by 40%. Funny lectures.
Dr. Mateer had very engaging lectures, and it was not unusual for him to show up in costume. There were random kahoots sprinkled throughout the lecture, but perfect accuracy was not necessary for full credit. Exams do carry most of the weight for the grade in this course.
Professors Mateer & Acchiardo make learning economics interesting. They go into detail about why it matters and how it applies in the world. It's a shame so many students complain about the kahoots and technical issues; everyone received a 100 for the day when these occurred. You need 60% accuracy to get a 100. Pay attention and use your resources.
highly recomend this class but not online in person! Wait for the spring to take eco304k!
He is an awesome professor. I took his class in person and it was a great experience. His lectures were up to date and super relevant to the topic. The in-class Kahoots and demonstrations increased my enthusiasm. I am a non-econ major and still understood all topics and found them intuitive. Highly recommend this course and professor to all.
This class is heavily weighed on the tests, if you don't do well on one test, it can potentially jeopardize your entire grade for the class. Overall, it's not the easiest class and the professors aren't the best at keeping you engaged through the online lecture, but reading the book and taking notes helps a lot.
If you can take econ with Dirk and Charity Joy, do it. Economics isn't easy but they do an amazing job at preparing you for the open-note, online tests. You definitely need to study but they make class interesting with their kahoots and fun videos. Was very nervous about this class but it ended up being a breeze with them. 10/10!!
r u an online school kinda gal? you'll love this class! unfortunately, I do not want to wake up at 9am, get straight onto a boring lecture where I end up zoning out, then get interrupted every 15 min by a mandatory quiz/Kahoot. spent all-nighters cram-reading the textbook before tests bc that was the only way I could learn. pros are open note tests
Take this class if you're willing to show up 99% of the time. I loved the class but didn't go enough and my grade suffered from it. If you pay attention, this is a great class.
W professor
LOVE this class. Professors Mateer and Acchiardo do a fantastic job of teaming up to teach this class and made lectures super fun and interesting to go to. DONT fall behind on reading and GO TO LECTURE. Theres easy extra credit and theyre fun to go to anyway. Use the practice tests and the homeworks/kahoots to study
Dr Mateer was very sweet! And excellent at his style of teaching! He is very accessible outside of class and I highly recommend! The grade was based 70% off exams, so make sure to study, but the questions are fair. I honestly don't think you can make it through class without reading the textbook, but it is very helpful!
This was a fantastic course! It's an easy A if you take it seriously and read the textbook chapters before class. Both Dirk and Charity Joy are incredibly nice people and (and Dirk even wrote the textbook the class uses). Going to the live studio is also fun because they give away money and prizes. Go to office hours once in a while if you can!
Lectures are actually very interesting and professor Mateer is pretty funny. There are 3 total tests in the class, worth 70% of your grade, so don't screw up. Assignments and 'InQuizitives' are worth the last 30% so you should be able to get those points.
Professor Mateer has been one of my best professors at UT so far! His lectures with Professor Acchiardo are extremely engaging and interactive. There several Kahoots and Puzzlers (in-class activities) every lecture that count towards your grade and if you go in person, they do live demonstrations and sometimes give out money or other goodies.
Pros: his textbook is great and explains the concepts clearly. The lectures go over the basics well. Getting an A is incredibly easy. Cons: in trying to make his class fun and engaging, he ends up being too gimmicky and not properly teaching the technical side of the concepts very well. If you want to properly learn the material, read his textbook.
A large online class, which makes it harder to get personal help if you struggle. Attendance is basically mandatory, as there are in-class activities for credit that you can't do after class. This class took up 2-3 hours a week (outside of class time) for reading the textbook and homework. The tests are fairly easy and open notes.
The textbook is straightforward and to the point and pairs very well with the lectures. The lectures are synchronous and filled with many real-world examples of economics, making learning enjoyable. The class is graded with combined quiz grades (very easy to get full points) and 3 Exams. Which are straightforward so they are not too difficult.
Econ is a notoriously tough subject, but Professors Dirk and Charity Joy made learning it a breeze! I took this class for my applied economics minor and loved it! It is entirely remote via video stream, but they make it interactive with live demos and in-class activities. Read/take notes on the book and do practice questions to score high on exams.
make sure to read the textbook!! there's a lot of information on there that will definitely enhance your knowledge past the lectures. professor mateer and professor charity joy were both amazing and engaging! the class is not difficult at all if you put in effort. i'd recommend them!
Professor is cool but when it comes to tech issue he is really strict about it. However, class overall is pretty chill and his lecture is nice. But,if you want to get Ez A.Then I recommend to take it at community college. If you are not good at social science test can be hard(hit or miss for difficulty) But overall I would say guarantee A-/B+/B
Make sure to get your participation points and learn micro outside of the textbook, because the textbook does not discuss too much application of concepts which is what the tests largely are. The tests seem relatively easy but can make you lose points at tricky areas, just be careful of answer choices
I took econ in high school so a lot of this class was review. That being said, I feel like I still learned a lot in the class. Class is online and you rack up points for participation/extra credit. Once you are done with that, you can straight up just not attend class if you want. The first exam was fairly easy, but the second and third were harder
Completely virtual class with great professors! Lecture topics are clearly explained, there are kahoots every class which you have to participate in. Weekly homework quizzes are chill. Exams are not difficult for the most part, questions are very similar to practice questions posted on canvas. The professors make this class really entertaining!
I loved how creative the lectures were in including pop culture references to explain economic concepts. Professor Mateer was engaging and his personality shined through the lectures. If you put in the work, approach everything in a timely manner and take the practice test questions, you'll definitely score an A in this class.
Good prof easy extra credit, but test is diff than Kahoots and IQs IMO. You have to study and know concepts! Look at the old test questions. Tests are open note and everything but they will still be a little confusing if you don't know what is going on in the class. Also, have to pay $65 to access textbook and IQ's which is mandatory for ur grade.
Prof Mateer has very engaging lectures with Puzzlers, Kahoots, & contests that he tries to make Microeconomics interesting with through real-life applications and practical examples. Along with Prof Charity-Joy, he's good at teaching and strict, though lectures tend to be fast-paced. The textbook has all the info & tests are very application based.
This class relies heavily on the information conveyed in the lectures, Kahoots, and IQs. Make sure you study for the tests as they make up a major portion of the grade. Professor Mateer made the lectures entertaining and fast-paced. The lectures are engaging and include many real-life applications of the concepts.
Great professor, just personally bad at econ. Exams make up the majority of the course grade, and it is incredibly important to read the textbook (must buy). There are lots of resources available to students: former test questions, Kahoots, and InQuizitives that can help you study. Attendance isn't required but heavily recommended for full points.
Online class was incredibly engaging and more fun than most of my other classes. Kahoots in class are used as participation and you can get a full 2% extra credit from participation. 70% of grade is from tests that are not like the kahoots and hard if you don't study even though they are open note so don't blow it off and use practice tests.
Loved this class! Lectures were online and interesting. If you read the textbook and participate during kahoots online, you will get a high grade. Provides everything to prepare you for the three exams. Also, there are three skips that you can use during every exams. Not a hard class. You do need to read the textbook or pay attention to lectures!
He tries to make the material relatable to real life scenarios which is nice. Attendance isn't mandatory but there are kahoots and puzzlers during the class which are used to calculate your participation grade. The tests are difficult but reviewing the kahoots and previous tests is helpful and they're open note/open book.
This is a really good class for the basics of econ. Really well taught, not to much hw. You certianly have to go to class however and kahoots are a big part of your grade. Exam heavy.
The class is mainly 3 tests, in-class assignments like kahoots or google forms, and weekly homework. Homework and in-class are easy. You have to do good on all 3 tests or your grade drops.
Awesome Professor. His class is entertaining and taught in a way that makes sense. Kahoots every day will allow you to keep track of how well you are doing in that chapter and will count toward your grade. Only need 160/300 pts to make a 100%. I made 160 in 2mths then stopped doing them. Exam Heavy. Prepare by reviewing chapter homework. Easy class
Mateer genuinely loves teaching and it clearly shows in his class. He presents info a way that is easy to absorb and he tries to make learning fun with cheesy skits and in class demos. Lectures are a bit light on content so make sure to read the textbook as well, but maintaining an A is extremely easy. Don't slack off and you'll do just fine
You must go to class in person to complete the in-class assignments. Also, he gives out money in class for participation or winning daily Kahoots. One day I won $17 for participating in one of the class demos. This has been one of my favorite classes at UT; however, if you don't have a background in econ (high school) then it will be a tough class.
Professor Dirk Mateer is one of the best profs I have had. He is engaging, well-respected, and fun to be around. His class is test-heavy, but he uses class time to prepare his students fully. There are a lot of alternate study options as well. There is a textbook, but it isn't required for you to be successful. I recommend this class and prof!
Microeconomics is very tricky, but the professor does such a good job at keeping the class engaged and his lectures are clear. He tries his best to prepare you for the exam. With lots of studying, an A is definitely achievable, i recommend this class!!
Good professor. Read the textbook, listen to online lectures, and study for exams and you should be able to make an A in the class.
He is a really nice professor. He makes the lectures engaging with hands-on examples that are actually fun. He also knows how to apply everything we are learning to the real world and how it will be useful to us. I would take again.
I LOVEDDD ECO 304K with Professor Dirk. It was definitely my favorite class I've taken at UT. The only assignments you have are InQuizitives once a week. Attendance is required for in class credit. Exams do require preparation, but they are extremely fair. Lectures are engaging and Dirk explains concepts super well with good examples.
Dirk Mateer is incredible. His lectures are super engaging. He has live demonstrations that keep the class awake. He is passionate about econ, and makes the class fun. There's a Kahoot! for attendance points almost every class, so it is important to attend. There is some reading, but nothing crazy. Lectures are recorded, tests were not super hard.
Dirk Mateer is phenomenal. He has a real passion for econ and his lectures definitely reflect that. His lectures are super interactive with a bunch of games you can volunteer for. Not to mention, his daily Kahoots have $10 cash prizes. Also, once you finish your participation credit, you can essentially skip class and watch the recorded lectures.
Really awesome class where he is very passionate about economics. He tries to make the lectures very engaging by using real world examples for almost every concept and using kahoots and google docs for in class participation points. Overall exams were relatively easy if you studied. No new material or curve ball questions we had not seen before.
Fun&Silly class. I had 2 professors: Mateer and Acciardo. The textbook doesn't worth purchasing because contains a bunch of specific examples. Class participation: kahoots & puzzlers. Homework: InQuizitives. 2 open book\note Exams(50 points each).Office Hours: case solutions with minimum explanations. If u rn't familiar with ECO, it will be tough.
Great class even if you don't have prior knowledge. Wayne and Dirk have entertaining lectures and the TA's were very helpful. There's kahoots and Google Forms during lectures but you only need 180 points for a 100 so it's very doable and fair. There's 3 skips on each of the 3 exams + optional final. Exams weren't bad at all and I didn't study much
I really liked him. His lectures were engaging and he presented the concepts in a way that was clear and easy to understand. Take him!
Great micro class. I had him online, but it remained easy to stay engaged due to the fast-moving and interactive lectures. Heavily recommend for econ.
Attendance is mandatory because it counts as your grade. Homeworks are Inquizitives, Kahoots are during the lectures, and tests are based on Inquizitives, Kahoots, and lectures. Reading the textbook is helpful before lectures, and extra credit is offered based on participation. LECTURES are AMAZING! So creative and engaging, you will love it!
If you need 304K take the online version! The class was easy and the lectures were great. All I would recommend is to read the book.
Prof. Dirk was awesome. Even though I'm only a freshman he is definitely my favorite professor so far here at UT. Him and Wayne made the perfect combo for micro, and I am really happy I took this class. It's fun enjoyable and if you study properly, you can get an A easily.
Class is very easy and informative. My only problem was that the lectures are an hour and a half twice a week. Over half of the time spent during lectures was playing clips or off topic. Class was easy, just felt like a waste of time most mornings.
This class was good but it was just a lot of reading. I noticed that the in person class, the lady professor, exams are easier than these. The class has about an assignment every week, inquisitive, 3 exams, 1 optional final, and gives in class participation credit. Just go over practice exams for each chapter to pass the exams.
Took online ECO304K with Dirk and Wayne. Lectures super interesting and kept me engaged. Workload was light; weekly IQ assignment that took about 20-30 minutes a week. Very straightforward and fair exams; if you do the kahoots, TPS, and IQ assignments you're good. Offers extra credit for having over the maximum participation.
Wealth and Well-Being was not my first pick for UGS, but it should've been. While the class is just an economics class, it is incredibly easy to get an A. The in-person participation points count for 20% of your grade and are handed to you. The tests are identical to the practice and the homework. Dirk is also amazing, he brings food, and prizes.
Awesome lectures, Mateer made up for the fact that it was online. The weekly InQuizitives were fairly easy and very helpful for studying for exams. Reading the textbook is definitely necessary if you want to get a high A. In class participation is based on Kahoots and Google Forms, so attendance is mandatory until you get all of those points.
The exams aren't very difficult; I study each one in the morning of exam day and still manage to get an A-. If you're a hardworking student, I bet you'll earn an A in the class. Additionally, the final exam replaces the lowest of the previous exams.
He is a good professor but exams are DIFFICULT, so study a lot like 2 weeks before the exams. The class was online so to get credit for attendance you have to do Kahoots and instapolls.
Easy class if you just read the textbook and pay attention during class. Optional final, 2 extra credit points if you just put a little effort in the kahoots
Teaches a complicated subjected like economics very clear. Grades are broken down into five sections and final can sub your lowest test grade so you have a saving grace. great professor overall and SI sessions are a big help in understanding the material.
I loved Micro with Mateer. I had the online synchronous section and it was easy to stay engaged with the combination of think-pair-shares and Kahoots. The content can be challenging, but if you pay attention during the lectures and take notes you should be fine. I learned I loved economics! There is some extra credit available as well.
he was so awesome i loved his micro class! it was super easy, just show up to class and apply yourself. the textbook is great and i loved his energy.
You get points throughout the semester from kahoots and google forms to count towards attendance. Concepts can be confusing and difficult but simple review and the tests are aceable, and you get 3 skips. Has clear passion for economics and makes lectures engaging, gives $10 reward for kahoot victors. Has in class participation and activities too.
I loved this class with Professor Mateer. Such a good lecturer and keeps you locked in. Tests are super straight forward and I personally thought they were pretty easy. I studied abt two days in advance and got an A on each test. Also make sure you go to class even though attendance isn't mandatory, the more classes you go to the more extra credit.
Dirk is the GOAT! Clearly wants students to succeed and is funny during lectures! Gives lots of easy participation points and extra credit, and the exams follow the Sample Test Questions and Kahoots pretty similarly. Made fun pop culture references and live in-class demos
I'm so glad I took “Economics & Ethics”. It's moderately easy if you've already taken econ in hs and has little hw. You should 100% definitely still study for the exams though. Very lecture and attendance heavy class, but he puts in effort to make them intriguing and fun! I have sm respect for him and will take another one of his courses next sem.
I took “Economics and Ethics” with Professor Mateer, and he was fantastic! He's a passionate and engaging lecturer who makes the material interesting. The class is easy, with in-class Kahoots and Google Forms for participation grades. Weekly Inquisitive assignments are straightforward, and the sample exams on Canvas closely match the actual tests.
Mateer's class is a great option - he makes the material engaging and provides lots of easy ways to earn points. Unstuck ai was super helpful for exam prep alongside the textbook and Kahoots. Definitely recommend this class if you're interested in economics.
