Wrost prof ever. Don't take his class.
poor prof!!!
Fear him if you intend to learn by rote, for he teaches on a more conceptual level. Really knows what he's talking about and communicates some of the profundity of the subject. Usually patient with questions. Good prof.

Fear him if you intend to learn by rote, for he teaches on a more conceptual level. Really don't know what he's talking about and communicates some of the profundity of the subject. Usually not patient with questions. Bad prof.
no Comments.
His lectures tend to be confusing because he goes over a lot of proofs-sometimes you have to ask him to do examples. He seems taken aback if you ask him a question in class, but is extremely helpful outside of class time.
Avoid this Set Theory class at all costs. It is not required for any of the degrees at the Univesity. It is incredibly hard to understand; Definitely a class where any amount of extra studying will NOT help you any. The course description is horrid.
Notice how all the other reviews for Math 347 all have a 1 for easiness? There's a reason for that: THE CLASS IS INSANELY HARD!!! My advice is to make flash cards right from the start and memorize everything... even if it makes no sense.
Honestly, I'm not sure what the complaints here are for. So he teaches conceptually? Well, that's what Set Theory is. So you can't learn by rote? You mean to say that you're only here to memorize things to forget them later? Honestly, one of the best profs I've had. Clear, inteligent and engaging
One of the best profs I've ever had.
I have never met anyone with a greater inferiority complex than this guy. Really needs to learn that being so defensive dosent help. Perhaps put some effort into actually learning how to teach, and what you are talking about. There is more than one way to do soemthing correctly, dont penalize good students just becasue they are right and you arent.
Set theory isn't hard its dense. The whole point of the class is to make you realize where the flaws of mathematics lie, the material itself is easy its only the limited time of the course that makes its hard to sponge it all in. Othe than that George is a great prof, very wise.
He was unable to provide any guidlines for what he was looking for in our papers. He is by far the worset prof I have ever had!!!!!! He flat out insulted and challenged students competence. He has no ablity to say what he means, and comes across calling the student an imbicle. He is the most anil prof imaginable
The whole class was about proofs and you should know that before enrolling. He was an excellent prof. I didn't hear a single person in my class complain about him. So either people on this site were not prepared for this course or he got better at teaching it.
I really enjoyed Peschke for linear algebra. It seemed to me that he made a definite effort to make sure whatever he said was a precise as possible. Also very helpful outside of class time.
This professor is as good as it gets. He takes time to explain things slowly and has patience if you don't get things right away. He pushes you very hard though and gives very difficult homework assignments. But if you take initiative and ask for help when you need it, he's there.
Online course, but he provides a very useless e-book!!
His homework assignments are very difficult, but they prepare you well for exams. He is very helpful outside of class, so he is an excellent Professor for any motivated student. The online course is difficult, but if you e-mail him questions and come to his office hours, you can do fine.
Difficult homework but helpful, clear and entertaining prof. Exam was fair.
Online course. Assignments are quite easy, maybe one or two challenging comparing to the others in the assignment. E-book is quite useful for doing the assignments. Will respond to email, but explaining not clear enough. Exams are not difficult, similar to the practice exam, though I think the practice one is slightly harder. Easy A. Take this.
prof.George is the one try to push you to learn. He explains stuff very clear, I was impressive by his drawing. But his assignments are kind of hard to do.
My favourite professor. Takes time explaining things, and is very succinct. Assignments can take a while to complete.
Avoid if possible. He decided he would teach the curriculum in a different order from other profs. The problem was that the online/written/lab assignments were common for all sections, meaning we couldn't do them because we hadn't learned the material yet. He has failed to give any kind of extension for said assignments.
You MUST pay attention in his lecture or you will for sure get lost. He also likes to focus on proofs. However, he was extremely helpful outside of class time so don't be afraid to ask for help with anything, because that's what he's there for!
Avoid this prof I can''t understand his notes. He always made the simple question complex. Textbook is much more helpful than his class
quizzes are much more tough than other class. During quiz 2 there are more than 90% students did not pass. Go Alexander's class, and read text book(cuz I do not understand his accent) and at least you can pass the quiz.
Not an easy class in any way. Peschke very made much sense in class and even less sense if you went to ask him questions. Most stuff he did was abstract, only way I learned what to do in this class was through the online testsquizzes and other students. The assignments were terrible, math grad students didn't understand that questions. Avoid!
Well, this prof. can not explain this lecture clearly. He usually asks for reaction but there was only few reactions. The midterm was horrible, there is one question he said that at least 23 of the students can not understand the question, and he just let it be. Nothing he makes to solve this problem. I strongly recommend to AVOID this prof.
He explains easy examples in class, differently than what is in the textbook, you have a clear understanding of the material. The assignments are a good addition to your knowledge as well. The problem is the quiz every two weeks, he is a very hard marker, usually only 10% of the class passes them. Not the worst, but you need to work at the material
Very nice prof, always patient and always willing to help if you go see him during office hours. He also has an online ebook for this course so you won't need to purchase the almost $200 textbook. However, I found the lectures to be long and boring. Some concepts were not explained clearly enough, and the assignments are ridiculously difficult.
DONT choose this prof ever!!!!! He is not able teach this lecture clearly. His sample quiz is exactly different from the actual exam. His notes are useless! In his class, some quizes average were below 50%.
His lecture is boring; a 90mins lecture feel like a century. He can't explain concepts clearly. But he has provided us a ebook which is free. However, the author of the book is probably himself and it is extremely similar to the notes provided( which is not helpful).
AVOID this prof if its possible! So hard to understand his lecture. He blames on the students for low average on the inclass quiz but he never thought about the difficulty between the sample and the real quiz is HUGE.
This class was really hard. His inclass quizzes were exponentially harder than his sample quizzes. His notes are nice, but what he taught and what he tested you were two completely different materials. The webassign assignments were WAY more helpful than his class notes. But he has nice writing, just really hard tests.
in a word, if possible, avoid him.
Worst math professor I have ever seen. Poor lectures which have nothing to do with the text book; hard tests, during the quiz 2 90% of students failed and he blamed students for the fail; he is really impaitent to answer the questions. I compared the final practice with other math classes, and his test is the hardest. plz try to avoid him
Terrible professor. Assignments are very difficult compared to other lecture sections, as are exams and his inconsistently assigned online quizzes. Not helpful during office hours, online text is very vague, textbook is completely useless. Schedules exam before the university's help session deliberately. Requires you to stay until end of exams.
Assignments were nearly impossible to complete, I talked to many math scholars and most of them were unsure as to what he was asking. He is a sweet little old man and I couldnt help but love him as a person, but I strongly recommend avoiding taking Math 125 with him if at all possible.
Beyond awful. I love Calculus, but he killed my interest in it. He refused to hold himself accountable, instead blaming the students for his bad teaching, resulting in bad quiz marks. His lecturesnotes were very poor, confusing and contained pointless material. Reading the textbook taught me more than his lectures ever did. Avoid him at all costs.
Attendance is mandatory because he does examples that will be tested on the exams (not posted online). He is VERY helpful on completing assignment during office hours. Exams are difficult (some questions are hard to understand) but doable.
Terrible prof. Brutal assignments, tests are impossible. Lectures don't make sense, waaay too abstract to understand. No help in office hours. Get another prof if at all possible
BRUTAL class. Rude prof. Avoid, especially if you haven't taken linear algebra because he will do all this stuff with matrices and you'll be lost.
George is an excellent prof. However, he challenges you to think outside the box. I recommend his class for anyone who wants to be challenged. Although, he can be a bit confusing at times but if you pay him a visit during office hours he is very helpful
Frusterating and confusing prof. Even 24 days after the final we still don't have our marks back. Try to avoid him if at all possible.
AVOID THIS PROF! He was very rude both in class and during office hours asked a question in class, was met with sarcastic remarks. Asked questions in office hours, he refused to answer them. Blamed students for his poor teaching people who had taken linear alg before could not help me because his notes and questions were so unclear textbook useless
He'll teach a lot of things based on linear algebra. If you haven't taken linear algebra you'll be lost. I suggest attending class for the sequences and series part. After that, if you haven't taken linear algebra, skip class and read the book. It'll make WAY more sense. Also, be prepared for extremely difficult exams.
long lecture with nothing will be tested in the exam, with a class average like 53 percentage and said you should take the response, never met an awful prof like him, take other option if you could
Only take 214 from him if you absolutely HAVE to. Averages are consistently low, you MUST do ALL the practice from the textbook to be prepared for the quizzes. In class I found he spent so much time explaining all this theory (lots not even relevant to the course) that we didn't do many examples.
I don't even know where to begin. Every problem with this man comes back to his genuine disrespect for students; from the manner in which material is presented (different across textbook, online, tests) to the time it took to grade exams there was not an ounce of respect. I'd rather defecate in my hands and clap then be in the same room as him.
the worst professor ever. Too hard assignment which generally take 6 hours. preposterous exams. abstract explanation. even yelled at students because students didn't understand him and answer on his question. scream during the class "what do you want me to do?? " grades are very very tough. totally waste of time. never ever take this class.
If you pay attention and ask questions in his office hours, you can do well. He seems to disrespect most of his students and gets frustrated very quickly when asked questions in class. Overall, he is a good teacher but extremely difficult assignments and quizzes.
Lectures are straight forward, crystally clear teacking. He is really good at teaching advanced courses, you might feel his explanations abstract, but the way he taught the class could make stuff rather easy if you have solid background and are well prepared. Perhaps he should be kept away from most 1st 2nd year students not in the math program.
He is abstract. When he assigns homework, DO THEM IMMEDIATELY. It will take you THAT long. The mock final is YOUR BEST FRIEND. I don't really blame him for the bad questions, math in general is a must practice. As long as you understand the concepts (which he explains abstractly) and think intuitively, you'll be fine. Practice a lot!!!
At first I felt sorry for all the poor reviews this prof was getting. After I thought about it for a while, I realize that he deserves every one of them. Never have I been so stressed out in my life. I think the marks definitely got scaled at the end, but throughout the course there is a lot of uncertainty as to where your mark stands.
Defines all concepts quite well, his assignments are questions you would see on a test. No textbook is required as he has an online textbook and well written notes.
Tough marker. Your assignments must be the SAME as standard solution he posted, or you lose mark.
Linear Algebra was a hard subect to begin with, especially with a prof that doesn't explain well at all. Also when I try to ask him for help during his office hours, he always feel annoyed when I ask him and he just tells me that we learned it in class, do it like how we did it in class. Like, if I KNEW how to do it, I won't be asking you for help.
This course is not easy. You need to spend lots of time on it to have an amazing mark. Slides can be tough to understand in the end of term so you must go to his office for help. Professor is friendly and helpful so feel free to ask his question in the office hour. Midterm test is OK but final is a little bit harder. No need for textbook.
Extremely hard final exam!!!
His notes are really good. He really made the concepts clear. Would recommend
The most precise man alive. Lectures are immaculately designed.
I learned a lot about cross products and diaper surfaces.
Genuine, caring, and sharp as a tack. I don't know why he gets so much hate. Strongly recommend.
Very intelligent professor and explains theory and concepts thoroughly. Lectures and work outside of class are a must. Math is not an easy subject and requires practice so when the other reviews say his grading is harsh or the tests are hard all I have to say is that they didn't put in the work and it shows through their frustration with the prof.
Lectures are fantastic and I actually had fun going to them. This dude can be funny and he really goes into depth when explaining key ideas. If you study hard and start assignments early and do lots of practice problems the course should be a breeze
He is a great guy don't get me wrong. Best prof I've had for out of lecture help. However if he senses that you're trying to milk an answer out of him because you're to lazy to do the question yourself, you'll probably leave his office feeling like a pathetic waste. Assignments are typical length and difficulty. PREPARE FOR HARD MIDTERM AND FINAL!!
I was never super into math but this mans lectures were so much more engaging and interesting than any other math prof I have taken. Definitely recommend
His powerpoints are super clear and he explains extremely well. Warning tho, if you go to his office hours, come prepared. He hates disorganization and be very clear with your questions. He might sound a bit harsh sometimes but he gives good feedback. And hes hilarious in class.
Im not exactly sure why this mans rating isn't higher. I failed math 102 in the winter term of 2017, and took this section in the following fall term. All I can say is that his teaching style is amazing, and his notes are PDF format so you can mainly just follow along and understand what he's showing, rather than playing "catch up" taking notes.
Dr. Peshke really makes learning math harder than it needs to be. I found his lectures to focus on more theory than application whereas he tested the application of those theories. I went to his office hours often, got a decent grade in the class, but I have no idea what linear algebra actually is.
This prof has AMAZING notes and explains concepts really well in class. Make sure to attend all of his lectures!
He has to be one of the worst profs in UofA. Dont get me wrong, he knows a lot. But the man doesnt know how to teach. He pays more attention to theory rather than explanation. Our class had an average of 1.8, so i hope that says a lot. Do yourself a favor and RUN.
Peschke is knowledgable and very good at explaining advanced concepts intuitively. Anyone with an affinity for math will appreciate his rigorous approach to teaching. Other reviews suggest he focusses on theory rather than application, but this should be expected for a theoretical mathematics class; this is very much an asset, not a hindrance.
Don't take it
He's one of the only MATH 102 profs who actually explains the theory. He's also super helpful if you go to his office hours.
Great prof
Amazing prof. Don't know why he only has a 2.6 rating, but he deserves a 5!
Dr Peschke is up there as one of my best first year professors. He made MATH 102 a lot of fun, went at a slow pace in order for the class to understand everything he was doing, and talked about the theory and foundation of linear algebra a lot, which made the class even more interesting!
Dr. Peschke is a very cheerful professor who puts a lot of effort into his class. However the structure of the course was incompatible with his teaching style and the level of work required in his class was just atrocious. you're better off using Khan Academy to learn this class.
He was nice but the class was poorly managed.
very hard don't take it
it is very hard and the marking system always get mistake. and it is very hard to go through his lecture since he always use very complicated words in his sentences. such a nightmare. just do not take his class
the professor makes this course awful. very stressful. never done his lecture on time. never gives practice problem with solution. if you ask a question makes you feel stupid. do not take classes with him. the homework are very hard to do. the quiz online are horrible.
This class was horrible and made me question why I chose to major in Math. The quizzes were awful, only consisting of 2 questions without part marks (so you are bound to fail if you mess one thing up). Every time anyone asked a question he would let out a big huff as if he was mad that you didn't understand. Overall, don't do Peschke.
Just avoid his class. It took away my interest in Mathematics. He teaches very vaguely, gives out extremely difficult quizzes and assignments. 60% final. He went against his own word and he unconsolidated the class sections. He posts practice without solutions. He caused a lot of stress for many students. He is smart, but lacks compassion.
A 60% final is ridiculous. And decides not to post solution, not even final answers, to the practice exam, which is meant for PRACTICE. Rude to whoever asks questions in lecture or forum. Like others said, avoid at all cost.
he is the worst professor I have ever had. Never post solution to every practice problems, and very rude to student who ask him question or ask him to post solution on the eclass. Always have mistakes on the marking system. The quiz and also homework are very hard to do. don't take his class!!!!!
Many reviews blame George because this class is hard. Having no solutions suck, but we have to work around it. George has reasons, and we should understand that. Additionally, saying "Khan Academy is better" is obvious. A professor CANNOT teach everything in depth, so it's up to us to work hard. He's generous when we get help (beware of his sass).
Arrogant, confrontational and overwhelmingly narcissistic. Rude to students on forums, refuses to provide solutions to practice exams etc ... all of this on top of the fact that this course is an absolute nightmare. The structure of the course was made up as we went and lacked cohesion. Never take any course with him unless it is your only option.
George was a condescending, disrespectful, arrogant professor. He literally only teaches theory. He may go over an example in class at most once a week. The course structure was atrocious and could definitely have been organized better. Don't bother asking for solutions to practice questions either, apparently it's not good to have solutions.
Don't take it, you will be regret for selecting his class, i am nearly get into depression because of his classes... homework and quiz are too difficult, and the concept he taught on the lecture are too abstract. If i am you, i will not consider his classes for sure.
I dont really like to rate professors but george is definetly not a good choice. Final consist of only 6 questions but weights 60%. besides he decided somehow split an 2 hour final into 3 parts and we have to set up proctoring 3 times. his exams are not hard but he is not a good prof.
His way of lecturing is not good at all. Decent person, but talks in a volume that is hard to hear, as if he is talking to himself. This course is one of the most difficult courses in First Year Engineering, take him at your own risk.
Don't get me wrong, Peschke's questions are hard and they require A LOT of work, but what else would you expect from university math courses? Aside from the course content, he is one of the nicest man I've seen and his passion for math really does shine. Yes, he can be sassy and he expects a lot of prerequisite knowledge but he is kind to the core.
Made me lose my interest in math altogether. His videos are only him copy/pasting the theorems straight from the textbook with little explanation. In zoom, he does 2 examples that don't correlate to the homework. Quizzes & written hw / week. Very rude, can't ask him questions without expecting attitude back. I have proof too. Final is worth 60%.
Oh boy, hes gonna sound like that math lowkey hates you A LOT. I wouldnt say calc is the worst but this very professor could make it brutal. Also he made us work our ass off on hw every single week and hw ended up weighing 10%, while da super random biweekly quizzes not rewarding what youve learned was 30% instead. HAHAH, enjoy!
Do not take his class, 60% final is ridiculous. I worked my butt off the entire semester but I messed up on the final and I received a terrible grade. Personally, not a big fan of him, never gonna be in his class ever again
I liked his open book quizzes and found them very useful but his assignments seemed un-nessesarily time consuming. His lectures and textbook were extremely useful BUT he taught everything so abstract and used different terms to describe operations. You could not even google what we was talking about to try and learn it from another source
Very good instructor and clearly knows what he is talking about, but incredibly unapproachable. Unable to change his teaching style to accommodate flip-flopping online and in-person classes, and unwilling to take student feedback or suggestions. Dr. Peschke is clearly intelligent, but he is condescending to the point it isn't worth asking for help.
The Worst Math Prof EVER
Professor George is very funny because other MATH214 professors decide to separate their class contents from his. Because his class is useless and the hardest ever. He should take care of Honor math students rather than torturing normal us. He gave easiest lecture materials reviews and crazy exams; he also decides to boom up difficulty after mid
The course is fine but the biggest issue is that Peschke's notes use a textbook that uses terminology that is different from any other calculus textbook or resource I've read. For example, In class, we must call the divergence of a series "convergence to infinity".
Skips the hardest material in lecture and spends too much time on the easy stuff. Incapable of understanding any questions you ask. On the written homework and exams you will find they take off part marks for just about everything to the point that for full marks you would have to write a whole paper on each question. Prepare to teach yourself.
He is knowledgeable but not a great teacher. His homework assignments are fair, but it does leave you scratching your head a lot of times. HE deducts marks on tests like crazy though! If you trying to pass with a good grade take another professor!
In simple words. Avoid him. Basically reads notes in the class, and doesn't provide enough practice material. Expects you to write every step in a long answer while his solutions in class are very short. Is a very tough grader, cuts marks in almost every small mistake. Prepare to teach yourself.
I wish I should have decided not to take his class based on the ratings on ratemyprof. Trust the ratings and avoid him. His classes are monotonous, and his notes are abstract. Your assignment solutions should be the same as his standard solutions or you lose marks. Your exam should be "over" detailed or you again lose marks. In short, TOUGH grader.
Had a terrible experience, it seems like he doesn't care about his students.
Prof. Peschke's only "flaw" was minor calculation errors in class, which in my head is expected in a math course. As long as you attend lectures and stay on track with the material, there is no reason to do poorly in this course. I was practically tutored by him during office hours. He also would help with assignments and concepts after class.
Great professor, cares for his students deeply.
