Lots of fun, but not much substance to his class.
Great Prof. George is awsome
at 1st seemed liked a guy trryin 2 hard, but turned out 2 b gr8 helps alotttt!!!
awesome

Awesome willing to help, the only prof that truly cares about students, just ask
more like entertainment than class
Great teacher! Keeps the lectures short and poignant.
wicked prof. interesting too
Funny, entertaining. Clarity on assingnments lacks a little buts he's always open to helping you, he even gives you his home #
George is one of those few profs that can really inspire you, although he can be a little unorthodox. Just don't let yourself be pulled into department politics because of your association with his unorthodoxy. Teaches by interest, not rote.
entertaining, however often lets class get sidetracked. offensive language****asive. outdated views about women.
This course is somewhat unorthodox in both content and the prof, but enjoyable. Definately changes the way you see things.
Crazy guy, but pretty interesting classes. Over head nots are horrible because they are not nice and organized, but a great teacher. Fairly easy!
George was a great guy and always there to help. His office door was always open. His classes (and he taught me twice) were enjoyable. Happy he's still teaching.
This guy seems great for about a month and then you realize that his class is more about him loving the sound of his own voice. If you want to sit in a theatre for an hour and a half and learn nothing this is the class for you.
George is a great prof. his methods are totally insane but they work, and although i have not read more than one chapter in the textbook, i feel like i understand stuff...and i think that it's better to learn things out of life, not books
No Comments
it's great that you can call him until midnight for whatever you need. but he's a little egotistical and really likes the sound of his own voice. and what is with that damned LEATHER vest???
You either love him or hate him. He covers all aspects of sociology. He explains stuff complex enough to let you come to your own conclusions and think for yourself instead of telling you what to think. Brilliant man. Brilliant mullet.
I LOVE HIM. He's ALWAYS available, he's ALWAYS helplful, he's ENTERTAINING, he's SMART...and the course load is really fair. I might even switch my major.
Ummm...George, did you know that our class was scheduled for 3 hours? But honestly, George is my best Univ. prof. in all my years. (1) Any prof who can be reached 12 hours of every day is a good one. Way to go.
George Kicked a@#! He is always there to talk to if you need to. He cares about the students, he is a bit of a fool sometimes but if you are looking for a fun and relaxing soci class at carleton Take soci 1000b with George.
George was a fantastic prof. He's the reason I switched my major from Crim to Soc. I loved his course, he made me want to go and learn about all aspects of sociology, and I always felt comfortable approaching him if I wasn't clear about something.
I switched my major because of George. He is the type of guy who makes you love soc. because it is so weird and random and funny. He is great! Take his class, do the 2 essays, follow the obvious guidelines and get a fairly easy A. Class are always short.
Tis guy is unique. I had a really hard time with his soc 1000 course. I dont know why. I worked hard but just bombed half my exams and assignments. Really approachable. But if I'm paying for uni classes I want them to be full length, this isnt high school
Awesome teacher....
He is definitely interesting and makes class entertaining. He makes sociology fun!
This guys the man! I specifically searched for his name while making my schedule the next year. If u can take his class, do it! Really great at relating the material to the real world!
He's amazing like many others have said! he is easy to approach, loves to end class early, which isn't bad when u have a tight sched. plus what prof gives u their home phone# so u can reach them anytime?umm he is the only only one i know!
AWESOME PROF! Recommend to take SOCI with him to everyone! It is fun, interesting, and so relevant to your life you won't believe it!
George was at least willing to put in time after class to help you and make sure you understand.
AMAZING prof, totally funny. Very left wing, the man is hilarious and VERY helpful and supportive of students.
This class does not exist anymore unfortuantely -amazing class. Great prof who cares about the students enough to give a damn. Wish I had time to take more of his classes.
Worst prof ever. My biggest mistake ever was taking SOCI with him. It ruined my first year. Notes suck and make no sense. The course makes no sense. Take PSYC instead.
This guy is a total nut. He doesn't even know what he's talking about, doesn't even have a degree in sociology, so has no business lecturing about the things he does. Not like he gives any notes anyways. Everything about him drove me and many others crazy. STAY AWAY IF YOU WANT TO LEARN!
To tell you the truth, I hated this guy all most all year. He was a bit of a nut...but it's now, that I'm taking other soc courses, without him as my prof that I really have an appreciation for him. Give him a chance, he's actually a really great Prof!! One of my Fav's...
This prof was very very odd. He made us buy textbooks that we never used. His lecture notes don't make sence when you go back to read them. The only good thing was he gives you all the questions on the exam before hand
Wow...a teacher who CARES about his students, takes the time to learn your name, not just see you as a number. Best teacher ever. He swears too, which makes the class so much better.
Most down to earth prof ive even had.
What more can i say than, this guy was awesome. I was very into the class b/c he taughtit well and helped us out for the final and midterm, where as other profs, just say study everything. George was always willing tohelp u out and made this course great!!!
Possibly the greatest prof!!! He's extremely fair, and makes it easy to follow along with the lectures. Not a single improvement can be made in my opinion- take any of his classes and I'm sure you'll feel the same!!!
A great prof, very interesting. Made the most boring things interesting. Not many readings to do and he tells you exactly what's on the exam!
this guy is crazy!. swares an obcene amount of times so that the students will think he's cool...if you fell for this you're just about as cool as he is...pretty easy class but the guy is a basket case and super annoying.
George's class is never a bore, always learn interesting stuff and he has a great sense of humour, makes the time go by faster, plus he always ends class early.
BEST PROFF EVER...
Totally amazing and VERY funny. Course requires a LOT of writting (ie: very long essays) but George is actually avail. to help you if you need it.
With George you learn without even realizing it. It's kind of like watching Jeopardy. You have to be creative for the essays following form too stringently your going to lose marks because your not supposed to conform to guidelines your supposed to write how you write.
George is probably the best prof at Carleton. His lectures are ALWAYS interesting, and he actually cares about his students. He always returns phone calls, and is very helpful with essay problems. Absolutely take his classes!
I took George's intro to socio in the summer and must say it was one of the most enjoyable classes I have ever taken. He lets you be who you want to be in class and on the exam. He also encourages and stresses that you be yourself, if your a cookiecutter type-drop the cookie batter and try to actually learn. Really enjoyed the class!
Okay, I just had to give him the chilli-pepper...He is kinda hot in that 70's biker/ burnout rocker kind of way...And if compassion and actual concern for students are considered than he is possibly the hottest prof at Carleton. Way to go George! You ROCK man!!!
Awesome prof. Very funny and down to earth. His lectures are very interesting and he is clear about what he wants from an assignmnent...exams are straight forward . Attend his lectures and you'll do very well because the info on the exam isn't just from the text.
George was an excellent prof. Very enthusiastic and made remembering material easy. Showed us how info applied in real life. always available outside class for help, even in other courses he didn't teach. Best prof I had in 4 years.
GREAT CLASS! I enjoyed it, I learned stuff, and I didn't even want to take it - it was an 'easy' credit for me, and I was fascinated every class. Very informative, uses real life examples, applies sociology to real life, and is VERY helpful. Always available to students!
very opinionated for a first year professor. I feel as though he should accept both sides of every situation, students entering their first year of university may be so overjoyed to have a "cool" teacher, they may take his opinion as oppose to thinking critically and for themselves.
Awsome, sweet teacher who always makes things interesting. There isn't a concept that he can't apply to real life to help you understand. I always wish that the lectures were longer because I feel that I get my money's worth. personable and dedicated. His sweetness in caring for his students rocks.

I had George for 1000 and 2150..i am taking the two other classes he teaches too...can't wait. This guy is awesome...just look at all the smiley faces people have given him and how many ratings he has compared to other profs. Best prof ever!
greta prof, learned a lot from him. Knows how to make the subject matter interesting. Long essays though.
If you can think critically and give reasonable arguments for your position and do it systematically A+. Think creatively, think critically and think 'outside the box'. Do these things and you will be rewarded tremendously.
I just can say..He is the best!
Awsome prof for any learning type. Informative classes and interesting lectures
didnt learn a single thing, and i went to all the lectures, expects too much from 1st year students as far as conclusions go, waste of time, wish i didnt had to take it for my program..
Exceptional. I think I learned alot from his 2150 class and retained more of it than from my whole first year combined. GOTO class if you want to do well, forget books with this guy. Good notes and asking lots of questions, which he encourages, will guarentee you a good mark. Yes he is opinionated, but it makes the course more memorable.
This teacher is truely inspirational. I am so happy that I ventured into his classes. I enjoy all class content and was able to apply material to all disciplines. I would recommend him to anyone wanting to be inspired and wanting to learn. I still remember readings and lectures from 1001. He made everything relevant. love him
lots of fun, teaching and grading is ver lax...to lax at times, expects too many results for amount of instruction/lecture in class..seems at times to try too hard to be cool with students
GEorge is BOMBIZZLE.. never had a cooler guy. Some say he tries to hard to impress, but lets be honest he doesnt give a rats a$$ wut anyone thinks cuz hes the****
he is awesome really knows what the students are going through. He makes what can be a very subject come to life. Highly recommeded!
I really, really hated taking this man's class. He's a smug hipster who tries so hard to play cool but is quite arrogant and grating.
Has him during a summer course, he was very fun and passionate and I loved his class. I had him again during regular school year and found him to be a little less fun. He can be a little over the top sometimes but its allllllll good
Ah this guy is cool! I don't know how much I learned in this course, but I remember going and finding it interesting at the time. Always let you out early (kinda nice) and really I don't think you can fail this course. Geroge made me laugh, made stuff interesting, and is all around a pretty laid back yet exciting guy!
great prof. Engaging and intelligent speaker. Enjoys teaching and does it well. Expects students to try hard and become engaged with the readings and lecture content. I read everything that I was assigned and rocked the exams. I think that you will learn a lot if you analyze the course content as he asks you to.
out of my 4 years at carleton, george is definitely my favourite prof. don't expect an easy grade, because there's a lot of work involved (long essays). he's accommodating and passionate. highly reccommended.
Probably the most interesting course I took in university. If I were to give a 6/5 on "easiness" I would, because he gives you the final BEFORE the exam and actually goes through a few questions. Then on the exam you just write the answers. EASY
Awesome Prof! Very entertaining with random rambling about school administration.
He's a great Prof!! I totally enjoyed his class. Attend all classes and you will do great! It was very interesting!
It is amazing that "George" is still employed. He is incoherent, ranting, and he teaches in the dark. He makes it clear that he would rather be a stand-up comedian. If you enjoy crude jokes more than LEARNING, listen to his advice: get really high, and pay him to ramble. Otherwise, AVOID his classes for something actually educational.
Rude guy. Doesn't seem to actually know Social Psychology at all, but talks a lot about his opinions on stuff. Marijuana enthousiast, which is cool, but he doesnt make a lot of sense.
always support George!!!!!
This prof is so loved and I don't get it. I hear he lost steam in recent years...but he is soooooo vague, I learned nothing and the final assignment is a 20 page paper that you barely know what to write about, which makes 20 pages difficult to acquire. Time to retire and get a haircut.
He doesn't bother putting a lecture together and instead, brings in countless guest speakers that give no supplementary information for what the course expects from you. He then expects the students to pump a 20 page. paper which students are forced to self-teach the material. I really regret taking his class.
This professor expects clear and coherent essays that also show the student tried their hardest. Seminar classes are less structured, as most seminar classes will be. The readings and questions need to be analyzed by the students and debate is key for learning. He is an intelligent professor who cares about his students, I've taken many with him.
All i can say is that if you're planning to take SOCI 1001 as an elective with Pollard, DO IT! Easy course, wont learn much, entertaining prof., don't need the book, finishes class early..good for engineers LOL If you actually want to learn something then take a diff prof.
Rude to the point of annoying outside of class. What the hell? I like his jokes and he seems like he could be a cool guy but some say he hates teaching now. He also doesn't look so good these days, maybe he is really ill.
i took a lot of courses with George and with other profs in Carleton U and to make it simple and cleat George is one if the BEST profs i've ever seen ... you will love the class, he will make the most boring **** interesting and if you try hard you will get a good mark... he is also a good guy besides being a good teacher
more then a prof. he is a classmate. he loves students who speak in class. he wants to give marks only to those that work for it. so work for it
The best prof at Carleton! I studied with him from 1990-94, and while he may take it easy on the Soc.100 crowd, he makes you work in the later years. He is the kind of teacher that you remember forever. He inspired my obsession with sociology, I wish I could study with him again.
Though at first I understood nothing, he gave notes and I read them. I was a bit scared of his language but later got used to it. There was a clip about the urban legend that I will never forget that this prof showed. From then I became a sociologist. Now doing my PhD because this prof gave me a foundation. Inspiring in his own ways.
I don't know how useful the material is, but George does his best to make it as applicable to real life as possible. The work load is a 20-page essay and the final (take-home) exam. You can work in pairs for the essay, and the exam has a lot of writing. The class is really laid back and George cracks a lot of jokes. Pretty funny guy! Recommended :)
George is incredibly approachable and encouraging. He loves participation from the class (though you won't get docked marks if you're shy or quiet), and no answer is ever wrong with him. He's so funny, and an easy marker so long as you can sufficiently support your arguments. One 20-page essay to be done in pairs or alone, plus a take-home final.
George is awesome and hilarious. Some of his material is kinda dry and he can be all over the place in lectures, but all in all a great prof. He has no filter when lecturing the class and sometimes says the funniest things. His class is definitely not boring!
amazing teacher makes you actually like the material... i took his course as an elective to get it done with but i actually loved the course ... even though i am in engineering :P
George is a nice guy. The only problem is his view of Canadian culture is a little outdated. Other then that Great Guy
BEST PROF EVER! 0 interest in class before attending, but I've left wanting to take more of it! Extremely helpful, kind, quick to respond to questions and seemingly always available to help. Very relaxed class environment (just dont use a cell phone!). Would love to continue taking classes with him! Highly recommend!
George is hilarious. There's only a chapter book needed for the class. 50% paper (20 pages) and 50% take home exam. He doesn't post anything online, so attending class is a MUST. I personally wasn't fond of the 20 page paper worth 50%, George keeps the class entertained to say the most.
He is insane and crazy in the best of ways. Really enjoyed this class he made it really interesting and fun. There is just a 50% essay and a 50% take home final. There is no $200 book which is a plus! There are two textbooks but I rented them for only $20 at the bookstore! Awesome prof take this class with him!
George is great! He's really funny, but if you get offended really easily I'd stay away. But if you have a good sense of humour then you'll be fine! I really enjoyed the class and he makes dry material into something interesting. One 20 page essay that ca be done in pairs or alone worth 50% and a take home exam worth 50%. Definitely recommend him.
Awesome Prof! He is always cracking jokes which makes class more interesting. He is also ALWAYS available for questions outside of class-he tells you to call him anytime! Probably the best prof I've had so far.
He's very engaging, helpful and actually very knowledgeable in social psychology. Those suggesting otherwise don't understand that the course is social psychology from the SOCIOLOGICAL perspective, not traditional social psychology. There is a major difference between these two focuses thus ppl who miss this detail would have poorer marks/ratings.
He's the best university lecturer I've ever met.
Seriously, he is one of the best professors at Carleton. He is so funny and is passionate about his field of Social Psychology. Loved his class and everything. Cares for his students and is really cool and casual. Always there for you and is approachable. Love love love this prof. Take his class and you will not regret it at all.
One of the best professors ever!
Great professor, very engaging and has fun with students! Every student should take a class with him.
hands down the best prof i've had so far. He's super engaging, hilarious and very down to earth. Never had a lecture last longer than 1.5 hours. He goes over content to make sure you understand everything. He jokes around with the class but you have to show up because nothing is online. 100% worth taking this class or any class with him
so, hes a good guy with a kind heart, but i really dont like the swearing and the act where he pretends to be a hippie back in university. the expectation to write a 20 page essay is a bit much but it is doable. i HIGHLY recommend, doing it in partners and START EARLY. it WILL eat you alive. overall decent class but wouldnt take again
Great prof. He is willing to meet outside of class hours to discuss issues regarding the term paper.
He doesn't use CU Learn, he doesn't like e-mailing, he will give you his number to call if you have questions, you have to attend all lectures to grasp the content, he has good class discussion and answers all questions.
So, after first class, I walked out frantically looking to get into another elective. 20 page essay? Not happening. The 20 page essay will scare you, but dont let it. Easiest essay Ive written, take good notes, and youll be A-OK! Participate, make good notes, and I swear it will be a grade bumping class. George is amazing, I highly recommend.
One of the best people I ever met. He came up to me and told me that I was an "A" student; after years of underachieving. Everyone has their own taste but he is caring, funny, and is very approachable. I still email him to this day, great prof! Good luck to anyone taking his course
Attendance is mandatory - don't be that one person who doesn't show up. Grading is normal as usual. Kind of funny watching an older man set up all the technical equipment for the guest speakers. Pretty good guest speakers though. This class was mediocre and requires a 20 page paper. Only take it if you are willing to put in a bit of work.
George is a character, let me just say that. Attendance is 100% mandatory. He did not give us any grades, whatsoever, throughout the term. We went into our final 20 page paper with no idea where we stood in the course. Aside from that, he does strive to make sure everyone gets a fair chance at getting a good grade. Kinda more like a buddy than prof
Doesn't post his slides so you must attend class. Great guy but swears a lot and classes are completely informal. Took as a Summer class so there was one 10 page essay but was super easy to finish is less than 10 days. Wants his students to pass and always makes himself available.
George is hilarious. he is really an amazing character. Easy marks and he makes everyone's lives easy too. no text reading required. Just lectures. summer course was graded by an essay worth 100%. Humble and fun. Clear and understandable lectures. Absolutely would recommend.
I'll be honest; the prof is funny. He gets in a good laugh from time to time. Unfortunately, his slides are pretty disorganized. Nothing is online, so you better be a great listener and notetaker; you need it for the 20-page assignment worth 50%. I would absolutely not recommend this class; you're better off doing a different major than Sociology.
What a gem honestly, im so glad i had the opportunity to take his classes before graduating. he's hilarious and quirky but once you get used to his ways (he's very particular) you'll enjoy the course and the content too is just !! must take before you leave carleton! thanks for so many memories george
Unclear grading criteria for the 20-page essay. Everything else was fine.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF IT IS ONLINE, George seems like very nice, but your grades are only a midterm, a 20 page paper, and a final. Zoom meeting only with no posted slides. No textbook so can't teach content to ourselves. No TA help at all, no one knows what they're doing. Class time is spent watching him learn how to use audio. Learned NOTHING.
George was a caring professor who really cares for his students. He is learning from the students as much as you are learning from him. However, the course material is formatted in a terrible way for an online class. The class is on zoom, and he presents his lecture; however, if a class is missed, he does not post any notes. Take at your own risk!
The fall 2020 course consisted of a midterm 25%, final paper 50%, and final exam 25%. While the 20-page final paper can be daunting, George really does prepare you through the lectures and essay workshops to do well on the paper and in the course. He is one of the most caring profs I've had at Carleton and definitely recommend taking his class!
Participation is required and there is a group presentation. He doesn't teach, he has the students present on readings (that he does not make available and are not available online) or has guest lectures. Calls students stupid for not participating, then interrupts when they try to participate. Awful "learning" environment. 33/33/33 grading.
This prof goes out of his way to be INFLEXIBLE in every single way—- he makes students carry each class, only caters to one type of student, and will not consider the lives of students when making acceptions, course structure, or deadlines
one of the worst profs ive ever taken. no powerpoints, no slides, no textbook, if you missed/misunderstood the zoom lectures you missed the content, that's it. the tests were so annoying, no clear grading criteria, and he wouldn't clarify why/where you didn't get marks if you asked. never taking him again
Overall, not a good or welcoming learning environment. Not very clear about assignment instructions. God forbid you ask him any questions; he will make you feel really stupid for not understanding something. He will call on you for participation even if you've already participated.
The way he teaches is not great for an online class. He doesn't post slides, notes, or recordings; if you miss a class, you miss everything. His assignments and tests aren't always very clear, too, which makes it hard. He enjoys questions and discussions though, and I think he would be a decent in-person teacher.
There were no resources provided, and there were 2 assignments. 10% of the grade was the midterm, the rest was the final, and no feedback was provided. When I got 31/90 on the final, I asked for feedback, and he bumped up the grade by 40 points. The lectures themselves were interesting, though discussion based, but his grading is horrible.
Midterm essay = 10% and Final 90%. All essay style and ZERO feedback. The class had to push to get clarity on what George was looking for. He often is looking for discussion more than lecture "to keep him thinking." Slides were often not helpful as they were run on speaking points not even really organized. Would've dropped but, prereqsuisite.
