Nice and caring person, understands students are people. Knows what hes doing, good at teaching basics clearly. Nothing spectacular but wayy better then the other engineering prereq professors. Good Professor, just a class with annoying work. Coding sucks but it couldve sucked way more.
Sets unreasonable expectations and fails to adequately explain material. Assigns work that he has not explained how to complete, and does not provide useful assistance when asked. Even the TAs don't know what's going on in the class. It's supposed to be an introductory course, and he's "teaching" material usually covered in grad courses.
If you don't have friends in your class that code, you are screwed. Witmer literally doesn't teach and the TA's don't know how to answer any questions. I figured it out eventually but not without a lot of time and help.
George Witmer is one of the most inconsiderate professors I have ever had. Not only did he give zero instruction for the weekly assignments (seriously, even the TA's didn't know what his questions were asking) but he also was little to no help when asked a question during office hours.
Witmer had a hard teaching job because you can't really teach code through a lecture. While I had previous coding experience, a lot of my peers did not and struggled. Your TA becomes your main source of info and help, so be prepared to email them A LOT. I thought Witmer was nice enough, though we barely really saw him other than the one lecture.
Witmer's ENGR010 this year was terrible. Class was disorganized, Confusing assignments, TA's were just as confused as everyone else. Lectures were cool except they didn't help with the assignments at all so there was no reason to go to them. I only did ok in this class bc I had prior experience with Python. Wack class but its required so good luck
George Witmer's lecture is easy to follow, but the homework assignments are on another level. One lecture class is not enough to do the coding assignments and it progressively becomes more complex to grasp for students new to programming. Overall, the high difficulty of the homework assignments does not match the easy-going nature of his lectures.
Since the course was reworked for fall 2021, the class was not that pretty. In fact, the TA's could barely help as the new content was never taught. The professor's lectures did not match the level of difficulty of the assignments, and we were essentially left to our own devices. Overall, terrible experience.
Not a greater lecturer but he wasn't mean! Projects were pretty dense given the small amount of material we learned. TAs didn't have office hours for the first half of the semester so getting help on projects was difficult. Definitely utilize Slack if you want to succeed and get extra help on concepts the second you feel confused
If you have no experience and this is your first time coding, this class was a pain. Lehigh restructured the course in Fall 21 and its exponentially more difficult. Witmers lectures go through verybasic examples but the hw are on another level. He seems like a nice guy at first but behind closed doors he's very condescending.
Easily the worst class I have ever taken. Lectures make the concepts seem intuitive, but then assignments are wholly disconnected in both difficulty as well as concepts making them unnecessarily difficult. And nobody helps you; students are simply encouraged to "google it" which works for a grade but not for learning or understanding.
For a TWO credit course, this class is absurdly difficult and excessive. Out of all my classes, this had the most work. You could follow all the instructions, and complete the assignments perfectly, but still get points off for "not going above and beyond." Especially difficult if you don't have coding background.
Witmer is easily the worst professor in the department. Essay prompts are either too broad or too detailed and always outdated and boring. His teaching style lacks confidence. The lectures are surface level with little relevance. Amount of busy work is off the charts and class discussions lack context and rhythm. His teaching needs to be graded.
Worst class of my first semester by a mile. So much time every single week trying to learn myself what he didn't teach and just expected us to have prior knowledge on. The class is definitely geared towards people with coding experience and if you have none its a long way up.
Not very good at lecture. Lectures are a waste of time, and assignments do not reflect the difficulty of the examples. Assignments are manageable, but Witmer sometimes makes them harder than they have to be. Honestly, class could be taught in a much better way. Also, TAs are not useful and do not know the assignments
For a 2 credit class, the amount of time i spent on assignments was ridiculous. Each assignment took me around 4 hours and we had 2 a week. He teaches an intro coding class as if we all have had experience before, which isnt the case. His assignments were unclear, overly challenging, and he was not sympathetic when we clearly needed help.
He gives around 4 assignments per week for a class that meets once a week. His lectures answers questions derived from the python assignments, however, throws incredibly inexperienced engineering students into complex engineering project proposals worth 40% of their grade. Absolutely ridiculous.
Very hard class
Doesn't teach, assigns way too much hw for a two credit class, all of the assignments need to be figured out on your own, because the lectures and notes don't cover any of it.
Terrible, he does not teach and assigns way too much homework for a two credit class. His lectures are useless compared to the difficulty of the homework.
I think Prof Witmer gets too much hate because he teaches a difficult class. Prof Witmer is very understanding and sympathetic to his students. He genuinely cares about his students and listens to constructive criticism very well. Prof Witmer puts a lot of effort into teaching, and I would totally take another class with him given the opportunity
Prof. Witmer teaches a difficult course, which frustrates students. He is very transparent about what he expects and attaches a rubric to each assignment, so you know exactly what to do to get a good grade. Lectures are engaging and he updates the assignments every semester based on student feedback to keep the course fair, relevant, and up to date
Lectures are boring and at 8am, but there's only 1 per week. The course was restructured in 2022, which brought some much-needed fixes, so ignore old reviews. Assignments are straightforward and the Piazza forum is a useful resource. Robotics labs are decent, but definitely write your code before the lab. FYI: I had coded before this class.
Witmer teaches this class like its the only class students are taking during the semester. There are ~2.5 homework assignments a week: 600-word essay, reading, and a 1000-word essay due every 2 weeks. Includes over breaks. He is a tough grader, and the prompts given are vague and repetitive. Would recommend avoiding taking this class if you can.
A lot of people complain about the difficulty of this class, and I see where they are coming from. Difficulty lies in trying to figure out assignments that dont make sense, and does not feel like a 2 credit course. However, he is a good professor, and this class really makes you think like an engineer.

Although he takes the course way more serious than he needs to, George Witmer was an ok professor. I didn't learn much from him; I already had knowledge coding before. Weekly assignments are plentiful, but as long as you make the effort to start them early you'll be fine. The lab is pretty easy too, ask for help if you need it!
Avoid this class if you can. The lectures are useless and he doesn't give much help. Awful teacher. Something needs to be done about this caliber of teaching!
I am writing this at 2am because of these assignments that take up to 10 hours weekly on top of the bi weekly labs all for a two credit class
An okay professor that cares about what he is teaching. However, sometimes it seems as if he cares more about what students do and don't show up to lecture more than what he's teaching. Lots of homework, inconsistent grades, never really gives good feedback either to justify grade.
George Witmer is awful. His lectures are less than interesting. His homework is excessive, and often times unclear. His class is disorganized, and there are not enough resources in lab sections. He also comes across as inhuman and lacks compassion. He is harsh and not understanding. I like coding, but ENGR 10 and George witmer are terrible.
As a person new to coding with python, it was annoying that every assignment that I completed did not get a 100% even though my code functioned and completed what was asked of me. In order to get a 100% on an assignment, I would have to "go above and beyond what was learned in class." How is that even possible for someone new to coding?
Witmer's lecture's were horrid, and useless. Hw was insane for a 2 credit course. Labs were really unclear, and always needed to be finished outside of lab. Spent a total of 12 hrs per week on hw. Don't go to his lectures, he just ends up lecturing about everything we are doing wrong, and comes off incredibly disrespectful to his students.
Way too much work for a 2 credit class. His lectures are pretty much a waste of time. The labs are fun but nearly impossible to complete in lab time which forces everyone to go to office hours. Some homework assignments are similarly impossible to figure out on your own and you need to ask a TA in office hours to get a clue on how to get started.
Way too much homework for a 2 credit course. There's plenty weekly reading and questions. Besides there is still other stuff like robotic lab which if you don't complete within lab session, you'll have to do it on TA's office hour. Worksheet is required to be done during class and you have to add certain word into it to for attendance. No mark = 0
2 credit class, 10+ hours of work per week, TA's try, but the lab is often swamped with students from other sections trying to finish work, since you cannot finish the labs without a TA present. Lectures are generally unhelpful.

This class is decently challenging even though I had previous experience in Python (this is a Python class). The workload is way too much for a 2 credit class but it is manageable. I HIGHLY recommend doing work asap as doing stuff last minute is a bad idea, especially for this class. The professor was fine in my opinion. Overall, it was okay.
Professor Witmer is honestly pretty welcoming, but his class isn't. Logged over 12 hours a week in homework, which is absurd for a 2 credit course. Lab sections are anxiety inducing as the required robots are often broke or refuse to connect to the special lab wifi, which wastes time. The assistant professor to this course is the actual worst too.
Assigned entirely too much homework, especially as the year progressed and given that students were teaching themselves the programming language. Treat people as machines rather than human beings & expect you to follow every instruction in a 9 page assignment description to the letter. Course changes every year because its so bad.
Witmer and Nguyen (assistant professor) are terrible. Way too much work for a 2 credit class, especially if you're a beginner. Keep up with your textbook activities and get help/finish robotics labs ASAP. The robotics labs are the worst with unclear instructions, lazy TAs, and a ruthless assistant professor. Be aware to succeed in class.
This is a woderful course if u are willing to read more than 100 pages of textbook , finish 1 Lab assignment by followwing steps of a 10 pages instruction, and write 10 progrmas EVERY SINGLE WEEK WITH LITTLE HELP from Professors and TAs.
Never take this awful class again
Engro 010 is not a two credit class, The teacher is fine, the class is constantly changing so in short, when taking this class it is similar to going on overload.
This class is a joke. He said that he would be making changes for the betterment of the students, as many of them greatly complained of the excessive workload. So George decided to make quizzes, except they are impossible even if you have coding background and if you do the optional assignments that are supposed to help, you will still struggle.
This class is very very difficult. Supposedly this semester he was making changes to make the class easier. All it has done was turn it into an even harder class. The Zybook assignments are pretty straightforward but he has added quizzes to the class. The quizzes are absolutely impossible to do even with studying and preparation. Prepare to suffer.
Very difficult class, 4+ credits' worth of work for 2 credits. Assignments are long, numerous and confusing. Labs are disorganized, TA's are overworked and the prof is very unavailable. One forgotten heading will earn 50% on important assignments and he's not afraid to fail 1/2 the class. Good luck on the quizzes; they made my classmates cry
The lab instructions are 10+ pages long and impossible to complete on time. There is not enough equipment (and it is often broken or malfunctioning) and the labs are overfilled so it's hard to get any help. prepare to spend excessive amounts of time working and stressing. George is ruthless and unhelpful, with useless lectures and a careless style
This professor is terrible and the class does not follow its own purpose. The whole point of this class is to learn python and instead he will fail you for having a typo in a file name. The labs are way too disorganized and crowded, leading the TAs to do 10x more work than the lazy professor. The professors refuse to listen to student's complaints.
I thought the ratings on here were joking but I've been proved wrong. Prof. Witmer cares little for the success of his students and isn't afraid to fail 50%+ of his class for simple formatting mistakes. He refuses to listen to students about the clear flaws in the class. Tells students not to email him yet sends all communication through email.
This is the worst experience I have ever had in any class I have taken in my entire academic life. The structure of the class is AWFUL. Anyone who enjoys coding / would have enjoyed it after learning it will absolutely hate the thought of it after this dumpster fire of a class. 2 credit class btw, but enough work to be 6 credits worth.
The professor doesn't even have a computer science degree.
George Whitmer is one of the worst and most cruel professors I have ever met. He constantly changes his course syllabus (which is technically against Lehigh's course policy) and finds interesting new ways to make student's life a lot harder. With the number of complaints about this guy from his students, I'm surprised he still has a job here.

He changed the course syllabus 6 times in one semester. He keeps on changing the bar of success and it's extremely frustrating to deal with. This course has been offered for a long time and I don't understand how it's run like its the first time the course has ever been offered.
I didn't like the class
Get ready to experience the worst engineering class of your life. Even though it is a 2 credit class, you will do 4 credit worth of work. Labs are the worst which are impossible to finish in a lab period which forces you to go to office hours. Try to get into group 2 and learn python yourself. Otherwise, you will have to go to the 7.55 lecture.
Witmer has no clue how to run a class. He changes the syllabus WEEKLY and has the most unfair grading system. Doesn't teach anything relating to labs or engr assignments in lecture, and forces you to teach yourself and complete assignments in the shortest amount of time. accuses you of cheating when u have to teach yourself.
Engineering 10 is by FAR the worst class I have ever taken. They are constantly changing how the class works(pretty much after every assignment), somehow making it 10 times worse every single time. The labs are a nightmare, it is very difficult to do outside of class and you HAVE to be checked off by a TA, which means office hours are unavoidable.
This class was the worst class I've ever taken. He constantly changed the syllabus and no changes he made helped, but rather, made the class worse. Robotics labs were impossible to complete during class, so going to office hours was necessary. Cares more about formatting rather than your understanding of Python. Lectures won't help you either.
Avoid Professor Witmer at all costs. He is unwilling to take students feedback on assignments or labs. He is a tough grader and his class sucks in general. Just try getting a passing grade for this class.

This professor teaches the worst class I have ever taken. He is a horrible grader and has no consideration for the well being of his students. When he teaches lectures it is incoherent and I never ever learn a thing. He is extremely lazy and gave me 3 zeroes on my assignments because he couldn't open my PDFs I submitted.
George went to BYU and it shows, definitely did a lot of soaking while there....
He changes the policy weekly to "accomodate to his students' needs," but in reality the class just becomes more unbearable. I don't think the class is difficult; however, it's annoying when the professor expects all the students to be perfect and make zero mistakes. If you happen to format one little thing wrong, expect a 0% on that assignment/lab.

George is horrible. He completely has no understanding for students that are in different situations and grades assignments like students should be perfect. All directions for this class are extremely unclear and the labs take up way too much of your time and require office hours to finish. Class changes every semester so expect the worst
Changed the course every two weeks during the spring 2024 semester, couldn't decide on grading or course requirements and wasted student time
Gave me a zero on a lab because of a typo. Absurd grading policies that made no sense. Labs, quizzes, and engineering assignments were all awful. Absolutely horrible class. Couldn't keep a single policy for the class consistent throughout the semester.
Witmer needs to be fired
Eng 010 course was chaotic, syllabus and grading was in constant flux. Accused the the class of cheating. Attempted to teach Python course and did not have Python certification. Took online testing for coding and converted testing process and made class show computer code on paper. Do not waste your time. Would not recommend.
He seems like a nice man but he does not know what is happening! He teaches a computing class but doesn't know how to work a computer. We have around 10 sections to get through each lecture and consistently get through 6. The second half of the quiz is also different than what we learned in class. But that also could be because we didn't learn it.
Writes poor instructions
Does absolutely no work for this class. Literally tells us to use ChatGPT to learn the material and practice the code ourselves. Also isn't even certified in what he's teaching. All this added up... clearly doesn't care about his students. If you're an engineering student you just gotta suck it up. If you aren't, be glad this isn't a requirement.
Worst "teacher" I have ever come into contact with. Sends rude emails, hates questions, and has no idea what he is teaching about. Also tells us that we should use ChatGPT to study. Quizzes are nothing like what we learn in class. I'm pretty sure he is tenured but I am still writing this with the hope of him getting fired. Avoid at all costs.
You might think he's nice in the beginning, but he's not! He is the most awful human being in the world. Be prepared to use a lot of outside sources to learn the content. Changes the course often, so idk how it will be in the future. Be smart. Careful when using AI, they will catch you
This class is way more work than it needs to be. He is often mean-spirited to students asking questions on Piazza and seems bothered by students trying to learn. 5 quizzes were worth 50% and way too long for the time given (but it will change in the future). Try to keep up with the content and ask the TAs for help. They're super understanding!
Very unhelpful. ENGR010 is by far the hardest class I have taken, and it's two credits. Professor Witmer did not help at all with it getting tougher. The Engineering assignments often are way harder than what is covered in the lecture, and the labs are like a completely different thing. IT WILL GET HARD/CONFUSING STARTING LECTURE 7 IF IN GROUP 1.
Wonderful human being! I really enjoyed attending his lectures and he's a great guy to get to know outside of class. Assignment directions were very clear and the homeworks really challenged my engineering expertise. Labs were so much fun! They were engaging and very innovative - everything you could possibility want in a freshman class.
Witmer is generally unorganized and not helpful in lectures, but 1-on-1 convo with him was actually enjoyable. The TAs are wonderful and helpful for labs and the quizzes are still a WOP. The whole class is messy and witmer started making good corrections through the semester. Textbook is not helpful.
Had to drop this class last semester because of Witmer's grading policy but retook it and got an A, with no thanks to Witmer. The TA's really make or break your experience. Witmer's lectures are rushed and rarely helpful, assignments are beyond difficult for a 2 cred class. If witmer keeps improving the syllabus I think this class will get better.
He literally rants in his emails and will show private emails from other students who out their soul into asking for a .4 raise in their grade to the ENTIRE class to say no and actually give them zeros. He also tells people to us AI but if he finds out you used it you get a zero.
The professor did a terrible job teaching during the lectures, and made the quizzes much harder than anything that was thought to us in class. The teacher is overall just a rude person who doesn't care about his students.
Highly unpredictable tests. Relatively inflexible with students, even if they put in additional effort. Unprofessional and disrespectful. He's just not excited to teach and it shows. ENGR 010 also rarely succeeds in teaching coding.

He makes low effort quizzes to try to punish AI cheaters but actively recommends the use of ChatGPT as the sole way of studying. Quizzes are unpredictable. Projects could be better and instructions are unclear.
It is very possible to do well in this class by attending lecture, completing labs, and getting help on Engineering Assignments. While I do agree Witmer could be tough and the quizzes are also difficult, I do not believe he is as bad as people review him. This class would be improved majorly if we covered less in order to understand content.
George is incredibly unprofessional in how he responds to students. He recently decided the best way to prevent students from emailing about rounding grades while it was technically still the semester (he left early to go on vacation which he mentioned in the email) was to blast students personal emails in a message to the entire 300 person class.
Professor Witmer really can be a nice guy if you show you are interested in learning and show respect. However, he is very strict and lacks patience for people who don't do their due diligence first, but overall he's fair just do your due diligence on things and follow the syllabus to a tee. Also, the TAs are a great resource go to them first.
I don't even know why and how he's still a professor. The lectures cover one way to use a certain code but then on quizzes he expects you to know every single way to use it. The homework is no help. You are expected to do stuff on the homework that you haven't even learned in class. Plus, he tells you to use AI to study. I hope he gets fired :)

This professor is TERRIBLE, do not take this class unless you absolutely have to. All one star reviews I have read about this guy are entirely correct. Going in with zero coding experience is a huge mistake and will get you killed, even in group one. Condescending guy who clearly doesn't want to be there, and unwilling to help students at all.

Engineering assignments and quizzes are so unnecessarily hard. Very difficult class especially as someone who went in with no prior coding experience. Accuses extremely smart students of cheating every chance he gets and penalizes them for it without proof. Even if they did cheat, he flames you for little things over a two credit class.

Probably the most disorganized, stress-inducing, annoying classes I've ever taken in my life; professor Witmer could care less about how his students learn or feel about the course. Essentially ran by TA's, you're only hope is to study everyday and use ChatGpt to your advantage.
Prepare to be confused about the instructions for virtually all assignments. Specifically the engineering assignments (homework) they are incredibly vague and you will spend hours just trying to figure out what the assignment requires you to do only to realize you did something wrong or added something you didn't need to.
Lovesss to accuse students of AI use (literally did to everyone I know) and then threatens codes of conduct if you try to resolve the issue. His assignments literally are impossible and have no correlation for what you learn in class. And beware, you need to speedrun through the quizzes.
He gets too much hate, but he is still not a great teacher. As long as you show up to lecture and put in decent effort into learning the material, the class is not too bad. That being said, it is way to much work for a 2 credit class. One piece of advice is to not procrastinate because many of the assignments take a while.
Programming is never easy for beginners so expect lots of struggling. Witmer explains everything well during lectures and answers everyone's questions patiently. To whoever is complaining about ENGR 10 (mostly blaming Witmer), please reflect on how much effort you put into the course and how effectively you are utilizing the resources provided.
This guy, let me tell you, he's the worst in all of Lehigh. Very rude to students, calls out students openly in the Piazza chat for just asking a question, and the syllabus is changing faster than the speed of light. Anyone who's given this man a good review is either a paid actor, Witmer himself, etc. Run to a land far far away from him, please.
Lectures are vague and barely scratch the surface of the coding necessary for the assignments that are already under-explained and AI-generated. Little to no scaffolding or alignment between class and homework. If you don't already know Python, you're on your own. Course design's frustrating and disorganized. Best thing to do is ask TA's for help.
I know the reviews are so dog, but he's actually not that bad this semester. I was genuinely scared to start his class, but he changed his syllabus so much that he basically made the class 10x easier. I had a 50% in his class mid semester and after grinding the quizzes for 3 days, I have a 93% in his class. His classes get easier every semester.
George Winters is fine one on one but he makes assignments and quizzes that are lowkey evil (very obviously made with ai) and they sometimes have very clearly contradictory instructions that you just sort of have to roll with. Unless this is a requirement for your major, nopony should take this class.
If you have not coded before this class you will find it very difficult. The instructions for labs and engineering assignments are incredibly unclear and you never really know what is expected for full credit. All of the assignments and quizzes are very clearly made with ChatGPT which leads to them often being incoherent or impossible.
Yes the class is extremely difficult and I'm pretty sure the assignments are made with AI but constant dedication and going to the TAs really help. It's all about figuring out which assignments and quizzes you should do to give you the most points. His lectures aren't that helpful but he seems like a kind person and tries to make the class easier.
Honestly, this class wasn't that bad based on what past semesters' comments/ratings say. If you go to the lecture and keep up with your assignments, you'll be fine. Yes, it does require quite work, but the TAs are very helpful, and so is Witmer himself.
Class is not bad like the other reviews make it seem. If you put in the work and effort you will get an A. TA's help a lot which is really good as long as you don't fall behind.
Don't let his reputation scare you. Your grade is completely up to you and if you don't want to interact with him you don't have to. While python is difficult to learn as a beginner in any scenario, he does have helpful lectures and I would urge people to go. Get ready to do a lot of work outside of class, but it is completely possible to get an A.
The class has improved so much this semester so all of the previous rankings are pretty much invalid. Course is entirely self paced and you don't have to do anything once you're done. As someone with 0 python experience the lectures were helpful and I finished the class with a month left in the semester.
Class is not bad at all, seems like it changed tremendously based off the other reviews. There is a lot of work in this class, but it is manageable and I was able to finish the course with an A by November. If you do skip class and not attend office hours you will have a harder time.
This class is extremely time consuming and the lectures weren't any help. It's easy enough to get an A in the class if you work hard and complete assignments on time but expect to have to go to TA office hours. The TAs will be the most help, especially if you haven't coded before so take advantage.
Lectures are completely useless, much better to learn on your own. Class is purely point based with very loose deadlines, so as long as you get enough enough to point you'll definitely get an A. But there's a lot of work.
i would rather go into a coma than take a class with him again. him walking around with that goofy ahh haircut is already enough.
Class is self based all the assignments are there and you work on your own time. If you need help there is TA's and you can email him and he'll help a lot. Can't complain if you skip all of his 8 am classes. Ignore the negative one and stay on top of the work and you are fine.
I HATE coding but he lowk know that no one likes doing it so the class is self paced with as many attempts for full credit on assignments. I skipped 90% of classes, just do the work ask for help and you will have an A.
Ok I'm just gonna drop this rating because they have really improved the class since last semester but there is still some work to do. As people have said, the lectures don't help, so try them out, but don't expect much. Witmer is a nice guy, and he's willing to help. The class structure is flawed though.
The lectures only covered pretty basic applications of the material and the assignments were way harder than what was taught so you had to invest a good amount of time in them and teach yourself. It is easy to get an A just by retaking quizzes and doing the easy labs and assignments. You probably won't really learn anything from this course though.
