Very nice guy. Very clear and helpful. He was pretty busy so didn't have many office hours. I had him as a discussion leader in a class that blew (MSE250)
He's a great guy, but I can't stand his lectures. It's an hour and a half of torture!
boring lectures and discussions
Terrible class. Very boring
very good teacher. he was willing to work with you, and was very reasonable with time. he would stay until 1 in the morning to help you with your presentations, and was very dedicated to the students and their understanding of the material.
G-Dub, as he was affecionately known, was the best professor I have had at college. Even though it was a required course, he made it somewhat interesting. He was available anytime you needed him (by appointment) and his grading was extremely fair.
Nice guy, good hair, real boring.
I love him. Thats all i can say.
Felt he was a nice guy with a good sense of humor. I like how he stresses common sense.. Definitely got something out of this class, as lame as the idea of eng100 is
Excellent teacher. Very clear, uses good examples and demonstrations (stick of power). Nicest guy ever, remembers everybody's name, and says hello to me in the halls to this day. Will go to any ends to make sure that you understand the material.
He gives you every opportunity to get an A.
MOST BORING CLASS EVER, but not that impossible if you can manage to stay awake.
explained things well, but not so great with 1 on 1 help at times. He loves classical music and goes off on long tangents about it if it is brought up.
Very helpful and goofy as****
Very boring class, his examples i felt were bad and annoying, not very helpful to me.
Wynarsky Sucks

He is very strict and not helpful
This is a pretty hard class, Wynarsky is very picky about EVERYTHING. But, he is also a good teacher: he has a good grasp on the material and explains things well. Also, he will love you if you go to office hours.
Wynarsky is a poor teacher who is full of himself. He repeatedly tells everyone how it took him 7 years to get a doctorate, which is not something to brag about. I would not recommend taking a class he teaches.
He's very enthusiastic about the material, even the things he hasn't had much experience (it seems) with, like electrical and magnetic properties. He assigns homework to reinforce the concepts, not ****work.
Very demanding of you as a student, but you are well rewarded. Tough but fair in his grading. Interesting class, definitely recommend it.
strict with grasdes
Wynarsky isn't the best teacher in the world, but I enjoyed him. I hated the class, but he taught it pretty well. As someone else said, go to office hours one day and just talk to him. He will love you for the rest of the class.
He cared about his students but expected the freshmen to know a lot more than they did
Wynarsky is a quality teacher. Needs a more fair grading scale. People who should get C's got B's along with the people that should have got A's. If you are very smart, plan on getting an B, and if you are not smart at all, plan on getting a B.

He's a unique guy, slightly weird...but very pleasant for the most part. He teaches well and will answer your question. As long as you follow directions and are very complete with your reports you will get a decent grade. (don't be sloppy!)
he teaches very fast pace and you need to remember absolutely everything he says. ask him for help if you need it, but don't expect much. your grade will improve if he likes you, so go to office hours once and just listen to him. pray that you will get a good group!
Depth of material closer to MSE 250 than a 100 level class, but he's a good prof that knows his stuff and is really enthusiastic.

he sux for real. it's the hardest section for 100. it's my worst class ever. pray for luck if you have pick his classes
Good Prof but sometimes hard to follow his lectures. He cares about his students, but his section of ENGIN100 is THE HARDEST of all of them. Sometimes lectures are boring, but not horrible
you NEVER want to meet this person EVER EVER for your professor. I don't know about other classes, but his eng100 is by far the hardest course ever. It DESTROYED all my ambition to become an engineer in my first semester of the college, and made my life miserable. His quality as a professor is however quite decent.
He went too much in depth for just a 100 level engineering class. His lectures aren't really organized and can be confusing. He is really boring.
He was a really good teacher. The class was difficult but I learned alot and he was very interesting and clear. He was a good teacher.
Wynarsky's lectures can get a little dry at times, but he is incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subject material. His grading principles are, admittedly, rather harsh. However, I would still suggest listening to him, as he definitely has a lot to teach.
Dr. Wynarsky is very passionate about what he teaches and really cares about his students. If you spend the time to go to office hours and ask questions he will help you tremendously. He likes people to be on time and pay attention in class. His grading is a little tough, but he makes everything very clear and his exams are straighforward and cl
Wynarsky is BY FAR the best teacher I have had at U of M. He is VERY passionate about the material he teaches, and wants you to LEARN. Go to office hours, ASK QUESTIONS, he loves to help...and talk about running. Overall, a little eccentric, but a GREAT GREAT professor, take his section and you WILL learn ALOT.

Best prof ever! While the material can be a bit difficult and in depth, you can do well in exams if you pay attention in class and study hard. The main problem about this class is that it is largely group-based, so good luck to you if you get lazy groupmates...
He gave me zero points on the final because I said the hole grew instead of corrosive element. Enough said! If you are gona take his class, focus on highering his low self esteem instead of material cause thats whats really important.
one of the best professors ive had in college. wynarski is the reason i decided to declare material science because his love for the material rubs off on you.
Wynarsky was the toughest professor I've had in engineering. He teaches old school with lectures, handouts and does not believe in a curve grade. You must attend class because there is no ctools, he passes handouts, takes attendance in his head and exam is lecture material. Prepare to study hard, exams are very comprehensive and all memorization
Wynarsky is fantastic. He loves teaching and it shows. He's harsh, but you get way more out of the class that way. He really wants to prepare you well for the real world. Take him! You will work hard, but it's ABSOLUTELY worth it.
Good Professor, very articulate; loves what he teaches.
Amazing professor!! Even though the class is a lot of groupwork, he knows who is doing the work and who isn't, so his grading is extremely fair. One of the best engr 100 classes as far as I can tell. Tests are also very straightforward. Just show him that you're trying your hardest and he'll grade you accordingly.
Had him for Eng 100 and MSE 250. One of the best professors ive had at U of M. Very passionate about what he teaches and wants his students to actually learn the material as opposed to memorizing some facts. No curve, but the tests are fair. Not too hard to get an A if you attend lecture
Fantastic professor! Had to drop from MSE 250 with a different professor the previous semester - took the class again with Wynarsky and everything was crystal clear. Most of the information is given in lecture - little textbook usage. Does not grade on a curve. Believes in old-fashioned teaching methods. Would highly recommend.
He knows his stuff and wants you to understand it, but he has a stick up his ass and is completely full of himself.
I had him for Engr 100. A very traditional teacher. grades on a straight scale. But he does a great job explaning in lectures and is very passionate! he loves teaching and talking to students! not an easy A class, but u learn a lot and get a lot out of the class!
Had him for engineering 100 ..most time consuming class .. DO NOT take this 100 class. Spent so much time on this class it started to effect my grades in other grades. You learn a lot but it's totally not worth the amount of time you spend into it. Its difficult to get an A but not impossible.
Wynarsky is a great prof! He explains the material and concepts extremely well which makes it easy to remember. He's not the best to answer questions during class, but will answer anything after. Grades straight scale, work intensive class, but the work is worth the reward.
He's still my favorite professor and i haven't had him since fall 2009. his class is hard, but it's not impossible to get an A in. a little sucking up won't hurt you at all... go to his office hours and he'll almost give you the answers straight up if you ask him the right way. i learned so much from him and can't wait to have him again for MSE 250
Had him for 101. Disrespected myself as well as 2 other members in a group project. Class is hard and a lot of time for the credit. Would not recommend if you don't know how to suck up to a teacher, or don't like working more hours than expected.
Professor Wynarsky was one of my favorite teachers at U of M so far. His lectures are completely clear, the exams are fair, and he is very enthusiastic about his teaching.
Professor Wynarsky is wonderful teacher. He is really passionate about what he teaches and that is evident in the time that he puts into the side and handouts for the class. If you come to class you should do well. Wynarsky Rocks!!!
Good professor, just goes through material very fast!... it's hard to catch everything he says and retain it for quizzes and exams.
Honestly the worst teacher I have had at UMich. He is self absorbed and annoying. He teaches using transparencies and an overhead projector. His lectures are not mandatory, yet he still expects you to know everything that happened in lecture while not posting any information on CTools. Horrible. Too bad his classes are required.
I love Wynarsky as a Professor, but, in all honesty, his ENGR 100 class is quite difficult. It is not impossible to get an A, but you have to be willing to put in much effort, especially in the group work part. I am excited to have him for MSE250!!
George is the bomb, but don't call him that! :) Just make sure to go to class, pay attention, and take good notes, then you will be fine on the exams! I love him! :)
Terrible professor. Treats students like they are idiots. Blatantly mean and finds humor in students doing poorly. Very unapproachable in office hours. Literally yelled at me for not understanding a concept. Avoid at all costs.
Very interesting guy. Can be a bit tightly wound about certain things. Hates when people come late or leave early, and is perfectly willing to call you out. Overall his ability to teach is very good though. Also, if you are 1 minute late the day homework is due, he will take it and mark it late without an EXCELLENT excuse. That's irritating.
He's a very interesting guy. His lectures are pretty boring but I enjoy the homework from this class. He's clear on exactly what he wants and if you follow his guidelines you'll do well. Definitely not an easy A unless you're willing to put in some time. Enjoyable class overall because of the material.
class based on 1000 pts and straight scale. meaning 100 pts buffer until you drop to a B+. Almost impossible, no matter what he tells you in the beginning of the course. Tech comm is VERY PICKY with instructions. expects you to devote your life to the course. Interesting class tho, learn a lot. decide for yourself-grade or little more education
Wyns is an amazing lecturer who covers all of the material on the exams very in depth. He basically does major exam problems during discussion. His exams are easy but class is not easy overall unless you are willing to work for the grade. Don't **** about taking his class unless you're willing to do work because he's an amazing teacher.
No doubt about it, a very tough grader. I would recommend getting getting Hildinger for the discussion. Wyna is great teacher and willing to help if you pursue it. He's a lil quirky with a unique brand of humor (that I like). I am taking MSE 250 with him next year without hesitation, If that tells you anything. Professionality is key to succeeding.
Wynarsky is a great professor. He really cares about the students and is passionate about the material. Tough grader, but if you put in the work there's not reason you can't get an A. Excited to take 220 with him in the Spring.
Excellent teacher, he really knows his stuff. However, he isn't very pleasant and doesn't show much respect for his students.
I really enjoyed most of his lectures, and the exams are fair. But tech com is graded way too rigorously in this class
Prof. Wynarsky is deceptively strong. And he has great hair.
Amazing professor.
He definitely knows the material and is passionate about the subject. He is a good professor, but not the nicest person. The tests are fair, but the tech com and presentations take a lot of time and effort.
Wynarsky is the man. I know some people will say that he is not the most considerate guy in the world, which is true, but he knows how to teach. Very clear from the beginning and always tells you what you need to know. Tests can be tough, but they are always fair. Has a great amount of knowledge and communicates it very well.
Forced into his 100 section because of my schedule. He is slightly eccentric and very strict on policies. Despite that, he is still one of the easiest people to learn from. He sets realistic expectations for his classes and has an enjoyable, goofy, sense of humor. Defiantly doesn't deserve a tough reputation. I hope he will be as good for MSE 250.
Strict class policies. Takes attendance, marks HW as late if not turned in right at the beginning of class. Lectures are fairly clear and the book is pretty good. However, he doesn't post much on CTools, so make sure to take great notes in class. Maybe sneak in a video camera and record lecture (he doesn't allow electronics). Overall, not bad.
He knows about materials? I can definitely teach him more than he could teach me. Everything in the lecture is from the book so there is no way to screw the lecture but he is not happy nor able to explain any further questions. Cannot imagine why people need this course after they have Intro to Chem + 211+382.
He is an excellent lecturer and he has always answered my emails promptly. I really don't understand why some people dislike him. He writes fair exams and homework, he lays out policies clearly, and he wants to see his classes do well.
Absolutely amazing teacher!!! Very strict about homework due dates and attendance. Extremely into the subject and makes the class very enjoyable. Loved this class even though the subject did not initially interest me
Dr. Wynarsky is a great professor. He is strict, but he's a really great teacher. Make sure to take good notes in lecture because he sometimes puts random things from lecture on the exams. The class was tough, but it was definitely rewarding and he was a very fair grader.
This class is very hard, but very helpful. He's very fair, but the material is challenging. Take good notes, go to every class, and pay attention to detail and you should be okay. I felt like this class helped prepare me for the professional world very well.
Deceptively strong.
Awesome prof. If you go to every single lecture (like you should, I don't know why that's such an out of the ordinary demand) there's no reason you should get lower than a B. All tests/quizzes based off lectures and were fair. The textbook is pretty cool too. Learned a fair amount about materials as well. Would def recommend.
Wynarsky is the man. He'll call you out and make you look like a fool if you're sleeping. He teaches old school with transparencies and an overhead. He teaches Mechanics, Materials, Organic Chem, and Statistics all in one class. Everyone in the class gets the same grade in the B range. Difficult to get an A but you learn a lot. The Tech Comm sucks.
Honestly, i would like to say i liked Wynarsky, but i just didn't. He teaches us assuming that we already know things and every time i would go into office hours he really didn't breakt hints own and clarify. He also thinks people are dumb if they need help. I took his class wanting to do BME in the future. Now i'm aerospace, the complete opposite.
Best professor I've had at UM. Explains everything so clearly. Knowledgeable and wants you to understand. Strict: no cell phones, laptops, coming in late, leaving early. But the hardcore atmosphere benefits you. Pay attn in class: he drops hints daily of "This will be on the exam" and that EXACT thing WILL be on the exam. And he's got great hair!
People who are more familiar with ideas in stressstrain mechanics (took AP physics) seem to understand a lot more than everybody else. I have tried to ask questions several times but each time, though in the end I got at least SOMETHING that might help me, he interrupted me assuming I was going to ask something different. Which I find rude.
I was really excited for this class, but I got placed with a really unmotivated group and I was doing 90% of the work so I went to him and he said my grade would reflect the amount of work I was doing, and it didn't. I was really disappointed. He is a good lecturer, but I should not need a doctors note to miss class when I am sick.
He seems very quirky when you first meet him and a bit like a hardass, but he's not that bad. He very clearly defines his rules at the beginning and as long as you follow them he will be friendly and helpful to you. He gives you all the information you need in lecture and doesn't try to trick you on the exams.
Basically it all comes down to your group. If you're a decent student, you can scrape at least a B from individual assignments like tests and writing. If you get a good group, your grade is set but otherwise it's kinda hard to get a good grade since group workparticipation is more than half your grade. If you're group is even maybe bad, drop fast.
Really awesome, great teacher. Can't stress this enough though, you must show up to class and take excellent notes. You also must show up for discussion or you won't be able to do the homework's. You do all that yo should be able to get an A.
He writes sloppy on my work and gives me 65% when I get the right answer because I have to cram my big hand writing into the limited space he gives us to show our work
At first Dr. Wynarsky can be very intimidating. He's an old-school dude who will bump you down a full letter grade without hesitation if he sees your phone during lecture. He's very blunt with his opinions on work, and that will reflect in the grades he gives. Work hard though, and he will notice (and so will your grade). Really a good guy, though.
Dr. Wynarsky is extremely intimidating at first with his grading policy and the fact that he'll dock a letter grade if he sees your phone, however he is extremely fair with the content on his exams. He mentions over and over again that if you pay attention in lecture, his exams will reflect that.
George Wynarsky is intimidating at first and strict. He does not allow electronics during lecture. The project takes quite a bit of time but is manageable. Freshman like to complain about his ENGR 100 section but you will get more out of it than any other section. He cares about preparing you for the rest of college instead of babying you.
He gives you every resource necessary to succeed- if you put in the work, you'll get the grade.
This is one of my favorite teachers at Michigan. I would highly recommend taking any class that he teaches.
ProfWynarksy is a very intelligent professor that wants his students to learn. He is always willing to clarify information, and an all around nice guy to talk to. Most of the material in this class is group based, and individual grading is not given. Be prepared to work harder than any other Engr 100 section, but learn more than any other section.
Wynarsky is an excellent professor. Very straightforward, really cares that students learn the material. He is great with helping you prepare for presentations and gives excellent feedback.
Wynarsky is very clear and organized, he is always prepared for lecture. You will NOT pass if you skip his lectures. Absolutely no technology use in his class, but you need to be taking good notes anyways.
His section of ENGR 100 is probably the hardest, so I do not recommend it if you want a good grade. Doing conferences for our research subject with him was helpful, but he was condescending AF & not helpful during office hours. So don't ask for help!
Wynarsky is a pretty okay guy. He makes funny jokes during class to lighten the mood. The coursepack is pretty helpful. Exams are decent, if you study you'll pass. He gives a good foundation for engineering and made me much more interested in BME. This is the hardest 100 course, so beware.
He's a great lecturer and explains materials pretty well(it's not super difficult either). The work load for this class is heavy. Be prepared to become an expert in your device and make the best presentations. He's intimidating sometimes but also a great guy to talk to outside of class. Also, he's got great hair and fashion sense.
Knows his stuff
Knows his stuff. Good at explaining technical information. Very particular about rules and policies.
Wynarksy knows his stuff and genuinely loves what he teaches. He is always full of energy and is excited to teach every lecture. I found the material pretty boring (it's a required course for my major, didn't choose to take it), but was still able to pay attention throughout because of Wynarsky's energy while lecturing.
Wynarksy's technical material for Engineering 100 isn't hard and the exams are very reflective of what he covers in class. He's really tough about the group project though, you have to meet all of his standards and specifications exactly or you're finished. His attitude can also be a bit intimidating.
He is by far my most favorite professor. He is very organized, and gives super good notes, which you can easily review when you do homework or study for exam. He is a tough grader but he is very clear in the beginning and gives helpful examples before homework is due. His sense of humor and sarcasm is a bonus.
Would I take again? Absolutely not. Did I learn a lot? Yes. Wynarsky is one of the strictest profs around. Have your phone out? Get a one letter deduction of grade. However, he is absolutely the best MSE 220/250 possible out of the current options (vs. Love or Yalisove). Very straightforward, simple presentation, just sit down and listen!
Kinda bland and dry. He tries... just a little awkward. I've learned a lot from him, and he's super strict. Still offers outside help if needed.
Dr. Wynarsky is a decent lecturer, but he is one of the most old-fashioned and disrespectful teachers I have had. He has a very condescending attitude and does not welcome questions or uncertainty from students. Take the class, sure, but know that he is like that and do not give yourself reason to need to talk to him, ever.
With Wynarsky it's simple. He wants you to learn and he will make you learn or you will suffer. He is old fashioned, but that's not a bad thing. His lectures will really make you into an engineer and you learn a lot of practical things from him. He is not tolerant of stupidity and stupid questions and he is exacting and meticulous.
He is REALLY condescending with a type A personality. He accepts nothing less of perfection. I still don't really like him but he does grow on you . He is actually really helpful esp during his office hours. He's also pretty nice when you look past his ego. Take the class but be prepared for a lot of content. Requires a lot of time outside class.
He is somewhat old fashioned, but he genuinely cares about whether you learn the material or not. He puts in effort to make sure you understand and learn as much as possible, and he is accessible outside of class if you have doubts or any questions.
Old fashioned, but knows how to teach the material well. Good grading policy. No need to buy textbook, online pdf is free. He doesn't exactly have a matsci background, so if you want to ask a question that goes beyond the scope of the course, he won't know the answer.
Extremely hard to approach. Very arrogant. Made me hate materials science after taking this class due to his third world approach to testing.
Arrogant and unapproachable, asking questions discouraged. Very strict grading, needlessly so for any non -MSE maj imo. If you're great at memorizing you'll probably do fine. Only perfection will get you an A. Lots of material only covered in lecture and not textbook. The material itself is interesting but I'd want a diff prof.
He is very rude and talked down to students. When I took the class, he was obsessive about how you presented answers. For example, I got a problem right, but he would mark it wrong if I used the wrong brackets. He is by far the worst professor I have had at UofM. He also carries a big wooden stick that he uses to point at things, it is very creepy
Dr. Wynarsky is a polarizing personality; most people either love him or hate him. The main problem I had with this course was that the theory exams seemed really random; we did some statics, some statistics, some materials and it all just seemed really weird to me. The group projects are the main workload of this class. Hope you get a good group!
Dr. Wynarsky is a great professor for those interested in materials science engineering or biomedical engineering. He goes through examples soundly and gives informative feedback on assignments and presentations. Although the course is not on a curve, the material isn't so hard that it needs to be. I would recommend his section of Engin100.
He made me feel like I shouldn't be an Engineer. He once told us we would look back at Freshmen year and thank him for being so harsh on us. I look back now as a recent graduate and I still do not feel thankful. Judged my appearance before my work. Would grade too harshly. He taught us MECH E and I was studying C.S. I got nothing out of this class.
He is very boring
The book is not followed. He will test on random examples he mentions in class. Test questions will be worded like "remember example x in class, what was the hump called?" Even if you understand the material you won't do well unless your a note taking savant. He tests you on how well you listened to him and not how well you understand materials.
Dr. Wynarsky is the most effective lecturer I've had here in 3 semesters as far as his ability to make you learn the material without a ton of extra effort due to his crystal clear lectures. Exams mirror lectures and homework beautifully but are very specific, so take good notes. Great dry humor. Impeccable penmanship. Loves track and field.
George Wynarsky is very old school. He is a bit intimidating when you first meet him. That being said, he is very kind and helpful once you get to know him. The class is a lot harder than I expected it to be, so make sure to do all of the homework, study, and read the book.
Had Wynarsky for Eng 100. Very strange, old-school man. Wrote his own course pack which was only kind of helpful. His tests were pretty difficult because the problems were all applications of concepts we learned in class, but he never gave example problems. Funny occasionally because he was so weird. Save urself a headache and take a diff Eng 100.
Wynarsky is the most condescending, uptight, needlessly rude person I have ever come across. Do not take this class unless you have too much happiness in your life and need a source of disdain to balance the scales. You know when you wake up happy? Hope that its not on the same day as his lecture because it will ruin your day.
I personally thought that Dr. Wynarsky was a great professor, definitely someone that really pushes you as a college freshman and shows that you're going to have to work hard here. He can be a really caring guy as long as you work hard to do the assignments correctly. Be smart and put in effort.
Doesn't give solutions to exams, no clear place where grades are given
Unclear with grading (ex. doesn't upload on Canvas) and doesn't give solutions to his tests
Good teacher, really knows his stuff. Just a mean person. Some of the things he would say to students shocked me and I honestly believe the only reason he is still teaching is because he is very smart. This class is particular was the hardest of all 100s and I would definitely recommend taking a different section.
How do I begin, this guy was made to make my life miserable. He thinks that because he has a PHD and is "teaching" at the University of Michigan he is able to treat his students horribly. Never have I meet someone with a greater superiority complex. He literally has a flip phone because he thinks it makes him better than his students. Steer clear!
This guy is the scariest professor I ever had and it was Engineering 100. Forget everything you know because if you are cocky he will destroy you. He's an insane grader but he lays out everything you need to know for the projects, homework and tests. Prepare to not get an A. But, you will learn so much in the class.
Dr. Wynarsky is such a strange man, I don't even know where to begin. If you even try to reason with him, he will completely shut you down. There is no point in arguing with this man. He requires such specific notation on his exams and it really affects your grade if you don't follow exactly what he wants. Save yourself & take a different Eng100!!
He assigned a $100 book to the class, claimed that we basically shouldn't read the book since he's smarter than it, but assigned problems from it. This arrogant old man refused to provide any other resources outside of lecture, and was constantly disrespecting GSIs and students for asking him questions. Avoid him if possible.
If you are looking for a FlexTech, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. It's way more work than any of the classes for my major. He goes way too fast and expects us to remember every single detail. Exams don't actually test your understanding, they test how well you memorize lecture content and homework.
Very enthusiastic about his field, and expects you to be the same. Lectures are actually very good. If I was not taking this class for credit, I would have enjoyed it a lot more. Very strict grader and does not own up (fully) for grading mistakes (I got less than half credit back for a problem he admitted he worded poorly and many answered wrong).
He's a somewhat hard teacher, but if I had really paid attention towards the end I think I would have gotten an A. I originally didn't care for Prof. Wynarsky, but he's kind of funny and if you can get past his odd policies and rude mannerisms he's a solid teacher. Straightforward and if you show up and take good notes you'll get an A/A-.
The class is not hard if you are paired with a good group. However, it's a completely useless class. He teaches some physics in lecture, but all assignments to turn in are based on writing papers. The midterms are all physics based, but most grades are for your essay writing. Really strange, very boring, avoid taking this section of Eng 100!
I read some of the reviews and expected worse, but I really like this professor. He's excellent at lecturing, provides great conceptual examples, and is very straightforward with requirements. I liked his dry humor and I don't think he's rude, just has his own expectations. He's old school and tech challenged, but it's never compromised lecture.
I never enjoyed any second of this class. A lot of the online work that we received revolved around group work, so be prepared for that. Dr. Wynarsky keeps this class very organized and neat and has an interest in the subject he teaches. However, I could not get past his personality as a teacher. Try to take a different section, if possible.
DO NOT TAKE HIS ENG 100 CLASS. It is much harder than other sections. The written work and homework is easy. EXAMS are horrible. This old man is such a rude keyboard-warrior and just talks about random mechanical engineering things during lecture, and asks random questions on exam. Dude should get punched in his fat mouth to be taught some manners.
Enjoyed the class. Prof. is pretty old school but the lectures were clear and engaging. He also is very passionate about the subject. Focused on qualitative questions rather than quantitative. Would highly recommend if youre interested in materials science.
His lectures are good, but the course structure is not great and he is extremely, extremely condescending to his students.
He is not understanding at all which is fine but he also is a bad professor who does not teach the material very well. I recommend avoiding him unless you know your stuff or you have to but he definitely disappointed me because I enjoy this topic before his class.
He's very old school, but this isn't a bad thing at all. He really knows his stuff and his lectures are very good if you pay attention. Cool examples! Homework can easily be answered from lecture materials. The 3 exams and 3 quizzes are a time crunch but the questions are fair. I took it online so I don't know him personally.
Wynarsky is very passionate about the subject and sets you up well for other materials classes, but has little patience and is strict. Unless you are majoring in this, avoid him.
One of the rudest professors Ive ever had. He is not willing to communicate with students and doesnt have any empathy. Would avoid at all costs.
Reminded me of everything I don't like about intro classes: a lot of stuff lumped together and a professor who doesn't understand why students don't magically get the material. He's knowledgeable and clear, but intolerant of stupid questions. If you don't catch every little detail in lecture and memorize them, you'll never get above a B on exams.
Very hard grader with little room error. There is no curve in this class and 3 exams comprise 80% of the grade. Very old school: doesnt use slides instead projects pieces of paper on the board. Avoid this class at all costs.
As a preface: took this 1st semester 2020. Lectures were very useful for me down the line (structures is a breeze after this). That being said, this is a man who will make you print out your *1* question assignment, complete it to very specific rules, then hand it in in-person during a pandemic when Canvas and phone scanners exist.
He is rude the majority of the time. There was like one small expeditious moment the whole semester where he showed any human empathy. It was a horrible choice for ENG100 looking back at it(took it a year ago).
Prof. Wynarsky is old school in the worst way. Doesnt record lectures even in Covid times. If you miss class you have no chance of understanding the material because he strays from the textbook often. He makes rel. easy material much harder to understand. People who have taken this class with any other prof say this is an easy A. AVOID HIM!!!!!!!!
He is very rude and disrespectful, teaching style is extremely outdated. Lectures aren't recorded at all. He doesn't post lecture slides either, only minimal handouts that aren't helpful. He's very strict about late homework, so pray that busses aren't late. Do not take him at all costs. He's very old-school, and should probably retire very soon.
Very inspiring professor. Inspired me to transfer majors away from MSE.
Dr. Wynarsky is the best professor I have had yet. At first, I was extremely intimidated by him and was unsure of what to do, but then took advantage of his office hours. Getting to know him and taking the time to do the work is what will help you succeed in his courses. If you take the time to study and do your homework, you will be just fine.
Overall, an unfair grader and teacher. I came out of MSE-220 feeling that I genuinely understood material structure and properties to a solid amount. This is not an exaggeration though, every single homework, every single quiz, and test, all were graded terribly. If you did not answer exactly how he spoke during lecture, your grade fell apart.
The class overall had very interesting content, was relatively well explained by him, and the exams were not too difficult. With that being said, I have never encountered/interacted with a more disrespectful professor in my entire life. He whole goal is to intimidate you and make you feel lesser than him.
You must attend class or you will not do well. Homework CANNOT be late. Not a terribly difficult class if you show up and do the homework. He thoroughly explains everything you need to know in lectures so you don't really need to read. But he is one of the most miserable professors I have ever had. Hope you never have to speak with him one on one.
Wynarsky's a bit of a "stern old man" type: he's very set in his method of doing things, and while some of his policies are unpopular and annoying (strict attendance policy, no grading curve), he has logical reasoning behind most of them. His MSE250 demos were really interesting, he's open to answering questions, and he clearly enjoys teaching.
I LOVE Wynarsky. Yes, he's strict and old-school and can come off blunt, but he makes it abundantly clear what you need to know from this class and what he expects of you, especially on exams. He goes out of his way to host extremely comprehensive exam review sessions, and he really does care about his students and helping them out
Horrible teacher, he tries to intimidate his students and feels above everyone. Comes off as rude and hostile in his lectures. Unfair grader on exams as he wants the exact answer as his own notes. For exams, he just throws you chapters in the book to study. Over 50% of students got a C+ or worse on exam 2 and he refused to curve anything.
He was dealing with personal issues outside of school and basically took it all out on his students. If you have him right now, do yourself a favor and drop out or switch professors. You'll regret it after taking the first exam. He doesn't care if the majority of the class fails his exams. He blames the students for not "studying" enough.
WORST teacher in the material science department... matter of fact, he's the worst teacher in the entire engineering department. Doesn't want his students to succeed, makes the class super difficult for absolutely no reason, especially being an introductory class.
This guy blows, switch out of his class ASAP if you have him right now. He shows no respect for his students, horrible learning environment.
He was so bad that the MATSCI department had to investigate him because he doesnt post lecture notes/recordings. Some of the prof comments in class were perceived to be dismissive/critical. The avg course grades are low. It's observed that the professor doesnt grade on a curve. His median grade is lower than any other teacher that teaches the class
You'll need to take good notes and go to office hours for anything you are even slightly confused about. He cares very deeply about the subject and thus one small mistake is heavily deducted for in grading. He has a hard shell but you can tell that he does care about the material, is interested in it and wants all students to do well.
Horrible
Simple and easy class but this professor makes it much harder than it needs to be. Alongside a very traditional teaching style, he is quite rude and disrespectful at times. If you miss class for whatever reason no matter how valid he will not listen to your concerns and will hold it against you when you discuss it with him. Wouldn't take him again.
Very bad professor. Not good at teaching and extremely mean and not understanding to students.
There is a reason he has a bad rep. I would avoid him if you can, he doesn't really care much about learning and more so cares about dunking on less educated student. Very condescending and doesn't treat students with respect.
Horrible. Worst prof i've had at umich so far.
Professor Wynarsky is just a stuck up professor who feels his students all need to prove themselves to him. Mean and has very annoying course policies including not posting lecture recordings.
Really dont like this professor. He was really mean to his students and the class format and policies hindered my learning. AVOID!!!
PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF. This professor is known for being extremely rude to students and for his notoriously horrendous course policies. I reported him to the chair of the MSE department for his behavior and they essential said it is the students fault for feeling offended by the way he treats them. Something needs to be done about this!!!
I have nothing good to say, the recent ratings from other people sum it up.
This class was a real challenge, but tools like unstuck study helped me stay on top of the material. The professor is strict, but going to class and using the free textbook can get you through.
Great professor who cares a lot about material science. Gives great lectures and spends a lot of time outside of class for questions to make sure that students understand the material.
Sometimes it is easier to read the textbook and come up with your own explanations cause the lectures kind of get overly complicated. DO NOT miss class, things he says out loud (not in the lecture notes) will be on the exam guaranteed. No real surprises on the exams but study more for the second one.
He was the worst professor I've had. Not understanding at all, belittling and sarcastic.
Prof Wynarsky has been rude and disrespectful to his students since the end of the civil war
