Professor Zhang makes a difficult class understandable. He knows we are undergrads and does not try to trick us. Just wants us to have a clear understanding of the fundamentals of statistics. Very available in person and by email. Wish I had him for 205. Very personable. Only downfall is using another professor for the lab portion.

although it's hard to understand him sometimes, he's a nice professor. he goes through the lectures very fast and finds everything to be easy. if you find something to be difficult you need to let him know or he will just keep going. the first exam is easy, but the second is harder so study probabilities like crazy.
Get used to hearing "it's very easy", and "its not hard, you just do this". He is not helpful at all if you want to talk about tests, spends 5 minutes going over a test...during his office hours. No study guides, takes a long time to give tests back. If possible take with another professor. Both tests are worded awkwardly the whole way through.
He kind of rushes through his lectures. The exams are hard. He graded the class on a curve though. JD Douglas is better than Zhang for DSCI.
The class started of kind of easy but don't UNDERESTIMATE it because its a startz getting harder. So stay on top of it !! Test are okay i guess he'z not a bad teacher but I was slacking off. JD douglas and zhang and the book all say different things tht getz to be a little confusing!!
Zhang is not a bad guy, he is really enthusiastic about the material, but the tests are pretty tricky and there will be no review. I'm not really sure what the point of two professors was. He says he curves, but I got a much lower grade than I was expecting.
The material I'm learning is fairly straight-forward, however, Zhang tends to quickly go over the more complicated areas and dwell on basic principles. For instance, if we were doing regression analysis, he would spend more time talking about what constitutes a "categorical variable" then he would a big equation. Just do the homework ;)
I LOVE ZHANG-A-RANG!! He's a G UNIT GANGSTA! So entertaining in class, he is SO enthusiastic about statistics, its a lot easier to be interested too. I was so scared for this class, but he's a really good teacher and willing to answer questions. I didn't really use the textbook, but its the same for 205 and 305 so maybe a worthy investment.
biggest tool ever. This class is NOT hard but the teacher is very annoying. He talks as if someone pissed in his cheerios every day. If you have another option, don't take this class with him. He'll be at his office hours if he feels like it and he wont' answer your emails.
Read the text - boring I know but it helps you understand what he is saying during lecture a lot more. Do the problems he assigns and maybe some extra for practice because his tests can be tricky. He is willing to help you just have to ask!
What a great guy! Sure, he's got a heck of an accent, but after a week or so you can hear right through it. Lectures were very interesting, but very fast at times. He really gets into this stuff! First test is sooo easy; can't say the same for the second, but I got an A in the class so I must have done well enough! TAKE HIM FOR THIS CLASS!!!!
"It's so EASAY!" This basically describes the class, not too tough, Zhang was a good instructor, tough to understand at times but overall a good instructor. The TA for the Tutorial section once a week was pretty much worthless, but zhang's lectures are VERY important.
Go to class everyday and do homework once a week for 30 minutes. Thats all you have to do to get an A in the course. But if you dont understand the material. Spend time on it. Do your homework before the TA session so you dont have to go to that waste of time.
Try to avoid him if you can. His lecture is very unorganized and confusing. Only hope you get a good grade from his class is "pay attention" on what he is saying because textbook is very unorganized, annoying, and doesn't help you at all.
He took over for another teacher and saved our class. Must read book and apply in class problems to homework. It uses basic math skills and a good calculator :-D
Worst teacher I have had. Can hardly speek english, has no teaching skill, and when he realizes that the class is confused he just talks louder. The avg. in the class is a D.
This guy is great. He is VERY clear. You have to listen well due to his chinese accent. The book is useless. The TA sessions are useless. Do the homework and know the problems!
Total waste of time. If you are a business major you have to take the class. Easy A though, tests are easy, hw easy. You will just hate him in lectures though, so so so so boring cant understand him at all because of his chinese accent. Tutorial were a waste of time. Overall horrible class but it will help your GPA so that is good.
Required class for Business major/minors but DO NOT take from Zhang. He is BY FAR the worst professor that I have EVER had at Western. If possible, stay away from this professor at all costs. Incomprehensible class lecture, exam without review or guidance of what to expect. You will end up trying to teach yourself the material - do not take him.
His TA, who he lets teach a couple classes isn't very helpful. He himself can teach the subject ok, but he moves kind of fast. The test's were not that bad.
Pretty good at doing examples, wants his students to succeed, if you go to help sessions you will get an automatic 100% on homework, his tests are extremely similar to the study guides, so follow them carefully and go to review sessions, he works out problems likely to be on the tests.
Not sure why he received such low ratings on here... Just go to class (don't read the book), do the homework and reviews for tests and it's not difficult to get a good grade. Help sessions are kind of worthless, but provide an opportunity to get answers to some of the homework questions. You are allowed a 'cheat sheet' for each test.
He is hard to understand, and does not encourage student participation in class. However, he has an ambition for the class. Just go to him during office hours, and practice with the homework he hands out.
While he may not be the greatest professor on the planet, he does deserve a better rating than he has here. He really does try, and his rapid-fire Chinese accent can be humorous at times. Probably the best option for 205
He has a strong asian accent but you can always tell what he's saying. (some previous comments are a little exaggerated) He obviously LOVES what he teaches and is really excited and wants to help, he even offers to help you with your other classes homework too. You do have to study but he gives a really good study guide.
This class is hard. Zhang is a good professor, but you need to pay attention and know what is going on to do well. He allows a double sided cheat sheet for all tests and final
Decent professor, but I was not overly impressed with his class. He's a good teacher but because our class was so large almost all questions were referred to the woman that grades all of our papers. Also he does not hand back any exams for review so it is difficult to know what you need to study more for the final.
George lectures at a pretty fast pace, but if you pay attention you can keep up. If you know how to do the homework, you shouldn't have too much trouble on the tests. The help sessions are sort of a waste of class time, but then again it is kind of nice to be able to zone out once a week and have it not really matter. He lets class out early often.
This class is not that difficult. Never went to class or studied, ever. Still got a C out of the class just by doing the homework and taking the tests.
Zhang is a pretty good teacher, but you really need to come to class every single day and try your best to do the homework all the way through even though you can copy it down easily during the weekly review sessions. His power points are useless, don't even bother studying them, just practice problems. Pretty strong accent.
Zhang is probably one of my least favorable instructors ever. He speaks with an accent and talks way too fast to understand the material at a normal pace. The material is not too hard, he just words it very badly in lecture. Tests are extremely difficult, his online review helped me maybe 10%. The rest I learned on my own/tutoring center.
Although he means well, I really disliked Zhang as an instructor. Difficult to follow in lecture, unclear on what to expect on tests, and does not seem to be aware of when students are not understanding the material. Good guy, absolutely terrible professor.
He tries, but it is super hard to understand him. He always says "it's easy" and answers his own questions. He also still doesn't explain things very well when you ask questions in class. I'm generally good at math, but this class was difficult
Professor Zhang is a good instructor who cares about his students. The class is set up for you to succeed, Homework is gone over in class before turning it in.His midterms are very challenging because of the time limit, but his posted reviews are extremely helpful. You also get 2pgs of notes. TA is very helpful as well.
Class was challenging and Zhang was difficult to understand with his accent. BUT, he is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject.
Zhang has a very thick accent that is hard to understand at first. He is very intelligent and loves teaching. He gets extremely into his lectures. Class attendance is not mandatory but showing up for class is better. I taught myself everything for the second midterm from the book. The whole class is fairly simple concepts.
Accent is not bad. More funny than anything. Understands this isn't a math class but more for business majors and caters the class to that. There is a class designated for help on hw where you can write down all the answers. Tests aren't too difficult. Class is curved. Allows use of a lot of notes as well
George really isn't that great of a teacher. Class material is complex, and the homework assignments are extremely tedious and much harder than the test questions. If you do the review entirely you'll do fine. Gives you a cheat sheet for exams, put some review problems on there for help!
This class was very easy for me and he is a great professor. Grade consisted of homework, two midterms, and a final exam. Midterm one was super easy, two was a little harder, and the final wasn't too bad. You get a cheat sheet on the exams. Take advantage of it! If you go to class and the HW help sessions and DO the HW, it is an easy A.
Very manageable course, cheatsheets allowed on the exams and are curved. Accent can be a little confusing but overall understandable. Example-based learning with bi-weekly assignments.
This class is not too difficult, but George speaks too quickly and is unclear. You'll be surprised on whats on the tests, but do your homework and study the review, and you'll be fine. He curves the overall class grade which is nice. Homework graded on completion, 2 exams and a final.
Zhang moves very quickly- he doesn't slow down, and doesn't check to see if anyone understands. His accent can be thick sometimes, and his handwriting is terrible. I learned more from the book than I did in his class. He's fine if you have experience in Stats, but for beginners, it's horrific. He has a lot of trouble answering questions clearly.
He doesn't offer much. The lectures are super dry and impossible to sit through. I am leaving this course with just abut the same knowledge of stats as I entered it with, just with some equations written down that I could have found online. I'm sure there are worse profs but this class has taken some of my soul.
Zhang is a great professor if you are a highly technical learner - I had no previous stats experience and his teaching method was perfect for me. It is paramount that you attend class and stay actively engaged, the tests aren't bad at all -- including the infamous midterm two. Sit in the front, ask questions, study, and you'll pull an easy A!
If you do not read the material before class you are going to have a tough time following what he says. The foundation for why we are studying what we are studying really isn't there and I had to go to Khan Academy to get further information. "It's easy", "It's common sense", are just a few of his regular phrases that don't do much for anyone.
Zhang is a very reasonable and helpful professor. There is a bit of a communication barrier because he has a very thick accent. Super nice and friendly, just hard to understand most of the time. His homework, tests and lecture all fit together to provide the most learning in my opinion. I suggest going to class.
Professor Zhang is a very effective professor and knows what he is talking about. There is a little bit of a language barrier due to his accent but he is a very knowledgeable man. Its not a terribly involved class with only 6 hw assignments and 3 exams overall but you still need to keep up. Start the HW early!
If you show up to every class and pay attention, you can easily get a good grade. I stopped reading the book halfway through the quarter and still got all needed material. Does not understand student questions often and makes it more confusing when they are asked. I would not choose to deal with him more than this once.
Zhang is an extremely effective professor. He broke statistical methods down in laymen's terms for those that had no prior knowledge. He explains the material thoroughly, but swiftly-- so stay attentive the whole lecture and you'll be fine. Tests were nearly identical to the study guide. I'd take another business class from him in a heartbeat.
lectures are long and bland--Zhang speaks with a very thick accent that is hard to understand and he fails interpret student questions correctly. The material itself is not extremely difficult but knowing what will be on the exam is
I loved Zhang! He's very smart and is very passionate about stats. I came into the class with no stats experience and it wasn't too difficult to understand if you go to class and do the homework and review guides. Tests aren't easy but the review guides are very similar to the exam & you get notes. Very doable
George Zhang is your average college Prof. Go to lectures, take notes, and go to study sessions and you'll pass. Tests are decently hard, make sure to study.
His lectures are fast(always ended 20 min early), but helpful because he does A LOT of example questions which is great practice. Before exams I highly recommend you do the practice exam some questions are the same on actual. He lets u use a cheat sheet. HW is an easy 100% if you go to the help sessions. He curves the overall class' final grades
He is to funny. Very passionate about teaching. The class is just 3 tests and homework assignments. The homework is gone over in class. Not to hard. But the material is a little hard to learn because it is math.
George is an alright professor. His lecture pace is too fast but he ends class 20 mins early to ask him questions if you have any. The tests were harder than I ever expected. He does allow a sheet of notes which is nice, but I often found I didn't have what I needed for the exams. I've never taken stats before a I feel like I still don't know much.
Zhang's class was pretty easy throughout the first half of the quarter until the 2nd exam. The average score was 65% on his second exam... It was obvious that many people did not understand what was going on. His lectures are extremely fast and hard to understand. Course material wasn't easy on top of that so the class overall was pretty difficult.
I did not enjoy taking stats with Zhang. His lectures were way too fast, he assumes that the students know what he's talking about and he grades on a bell-curve (obviously). I did not come out of the class with the skills I was hoping to learn and he does not try to build connections/relationships with the class. It's all business.
One of the worst professors Ive ever had, just assumes that we all understand And jumps from subject to subject quickly. He isnt hard to understand sometimes. Class material is simple but the tests are pretty hard. You do get a sheet of notes. Hw is also an easy 100% if you go to the help sessions
One of the best professors I have had at Western. He is extremely good explaining statistics. Take him. You won't regret it.
I dont understand why Zhang has a low grade on rate my professor. Many people never show up to lecture and receive bad grades and then complain that his tests are too hard or he doesnt help his students. Bottom line is, Zhang is a solid stats teacher, he knows what he is talking about and if you go to lectures and take notes you will do well.
Zhang is really hard to understand, and he does not let you finish your questions before making up an answer that doesn't apply to anything. He tends to not read the class and goes from subject to subject very quickly. For exam 1 the average was 75% and for exam 2 the average was 64%. This is by far the hardest and worst class I have ever taken!!!!
Professor Zhang does not have a good grasp on class understanding. If you are confused during class, Zhang is mediocre at giving alternate explanations to student questions, let alone give any clarification. This class was one of the worst classes I have taken at Western.
Zhang is obviously very knowledgeable at Stats, and knows what he is talking about. However, his lecture pace was way too fast, especially for those with no prior stats background. Best way to do well in this class is to make friends and have each other self-teach the course content. If possible, avoid taking Business Statistics with George.
Zhang is very knowledgeable of the material being taught. Then only problem is he doesnt know how to communicate the information with the students. Exams do not relate with anything learned in lecture. Definitely avoid taking a class with Zhang if possible
While he does curve class grades heavily, that's more of a testament to his poor teaching skills than any fairness on his part. Why is it that so many profs in the CBE simply skim over a barebones Powerpoint without bothering to explain any of the details therein, and then just call it a day without having taught anything? Zhang is no exception.
If you have taken stats before, you have nothing to worry about. It'll be a little harder if you haven't but nothing crazy. The lectures are difficult to make it to, just summarize the practice exams on your note sheets and it should be an easy B, with the curve.
Zhang is alright but he knows what he is talking about. Sometimes he cuts you off in the middle of the question and answer. I find it not efficient. Wednesday is homework help session basically go over the entire homework. He does not upload grade curving or anything on canvas so you only know your final grade after it is submitted.
Zhangs lectures were pretty long and boring for me. Many is the assignment quizzes didnt have anything to do with his lecture at time either and the midterms and final wasnt much better either. Avoid if you can.
He's a bit difficult to understand but lectures are organized and follow the textbook. There's HW every week and its not too hard and Wed. class goes over all the questions. Often didn't understand questions that students asked during class. HW will save your grade b/c the class avg. on tests was around a 75 and were decently difficult.
He is obviously very knowledgeable about the info but his presentation of it to students is pretty atrocious. Lecture slides are all over the place & missing info and is just not presented well at all.
*Took online during COVID* The lectures were a little unorganized and he didn't do a great job at conveying his, what seemed to be vast, knowledge to his students. The study guides were not really like the tests and the tests were really difficult. Definitely not an easy A class but if you put in extra work to understand, you'll do okay.
. The amount of lectures was incredibly inconsistent. One week you could have 3 20 minute lectures and the next week you could have 8 30+ minute lectures. His lectures were also very unorganized and hard to follow. He offered office hours but they contradicted with my other classes and I couldn't get help. Do not recommend taking this class
He's a really nice professor and knows a lot, the weekly quizzes are not that bad since you have unlimited attempts. However, there's 5-8 recorded lectures every week that do an average job of teaching you what will be on the quizzes and tests. A good set up for a class but pretty bad execution with all the test averages being a D+
This is by far the worst class I have ever taken. Mr. Zhang was hard to reach by email, did not teach the material in an effective manner, and tested on things I had never seen in the lectures. The lectures are inconsistent, hard to understand, and incredibly boring. Avoid this class if you can, I wish I would have.
One of the worst classes I've taken. Lecture videos are blow your brains boring and confusing, some weeks there's 1.5hrs of lectures, sometimes there's 4hrs. There's no homework and the weekly quizzes have unlimited attempts. Fine class to take online if you just need the credits but avoid at all costs if you actually want to learn the material
The homework really gives you a false sense of security. The textbook and lectures are relatively easy to understand, and the weekly homework is almost ridiculously easy, but the exams really hit like a truck. If you start preparing early and do every single problem in the book, there's a good chance you'll get a B or higher, but it's hard.
Stats is difficult to begin with even when you're good at math. This professor is not a great fit for teaching this subject at this school as there seems to be a bit of a language barrier. His lectures (YouTube videos he plays on zoom) are confusing/hard to follow and very plain. The course isn't organized whatsoever and is hard to retain info from
The classes are him playing an old video he made years ago. When I ask a question, he gives a long answer that leaves me just as confused. One time I asked how to know how to approach a problem and all he said was "practice." He does allow open note online exams and unlimited retake quizzes, but the class average for the 2nd midterm was 63%.
He is a nice person, but he just replays old, recorded lectures where his explanations are long and entirely unhelpful. Asking questions hasn't helped me understand more because his answers mostly consist of 'practice' or 'this is from chapter -' he also says things are easy and then doesn't explain them any further because he thinks it's simple.
His class is just a bunch of prerecorded boring lectures, that are long and will put you to sleep. He claimed that these online lectures will improve learning because you can rewatch them but this seems like an excuse for him not to actually teach. When you ask him a question in the zooms he just says to watch the lecture videos.
He's nice but that's about all he has going for him. He's unresponsive via email, doesn't follow his own course guidelines, and worst off uses prerecorded lectures to teach his entire course. There are 5 or 6 unnecessarily long lectures to watch every week and it's a real struggle to make it through one without losing focus.
The exams are hard, especially the final! The questions in the final took too much time given the time limit. Be aware that a couple of things not mentioned in the lectures will be tested. The HW is kinda similar to the exams, so you MUST thoroughly understand them to do well on the exams. BE SURE TO GET 100% ON ALL OF THE HW!
Professor Zhang is nice but my complaint is that the tests covered material that was never even mentioned. He has prerecorded lectures that I recommend watching throughout the week (
I can't recommend this professor. He gives out 3-6 lectures that are each 40min to 2hrs long. He takes attendance for classes where he plays the prerecorded lectures (which are terrible). The homework wasn't too bad, but I didn't learn anything because of how poor the lectures were. I learned the content on YT and that was infinately better.
Prof. Zhang seems like a nice guy, but the class is rough because of the language barrier. The lectures are not the easiest to understand, and so I ended up teaching myself the majority of the material online. The HW are unlimited attempts and the 3 tests are online. Don't buy the required textbook either, it's not necessary.
Can't do morning classes, so I completed this course with a mix of the online lectures and the textbook. Lectures aren't great, he has an accent but it's perfectly understandable. 75% of my understanding came from the textbook. Unlimited attempts on quizzes, double-edged sword if you're lazy. Not the worst class? Got an 85 (curved to B).
He's a super nice guy and makes the class very accessible. I was out for a week and didn't fall behind at all. Everything is online with one in person class every week with an optional help session.
This wasn't an issue for me, but he does have a semi-heavy accent, which could make it hard for some people to understand him. But overall, for me, he was a good teacher and was very clear. all the slides are posted on Canvas to refer back to anyway, and all the tests are online.
Bad lecturer, regardless of his accent. He is roundabout and says the same thing over and over again, and for some reason once a class would talk about a concept and then say it doesn't matter and we aren't going to be using it. I learned nothing in this class, even as someone who normally likes school and tries.
Final is now in person - dont expect to learn anything!
I normally enjoy learning, but this professor makes it nearly impossible. He speaks broken English, plays old COVID-era lecture videos, gives dry responses, and grades on a bell curve. Exams are much harder than homework, and everyone I know is terrified for the final. Worst professor at WWU.
The class is over zoom but he just plays laggy videos off of Youtube and expects you to watch more outside of the class time, though his accent is really not an issue. It's very difficult to learn the material as the videos are more conceptual based. The final is in person while everything else is online, which feels like setting us up for failure.
If you want to sign up for an in person class that goes FULLY online after week one without warning and the only instruction is from 5 year old prerecorded zoom sessions, this is the professor for you! All exams online except for the final- a lazy and sloppy attempt to scare people into caring. He has no interest in teaching this class. Good luck.
- Zoom classes are mandatory even though they're replays of old recordings rather than live lectures. - Rarely responds to emails. - The final is closed book, in person, and worth 40% on your grade. - Bell Curve grading: even if you earn an A your final grade's prob a B or C. - His English and accent are fine, that comment was just racist :/
had an A- before the final, got 68% on the final and due to the kind of curve he had i still ended up with an A- in the class (top 10% of the class). he will take a long time to respond to emails, zoom lectures are just him playing old youtube videos, and over explains all the wrong things. would recommend a different prof. unless you can selfstudy
