Overheads are straight from the book. Hard exams!
O.k .. chem is not my subject . just pre-req for engi
Reads from the textbook and gives unrelated, hard, tests.
not so bad...just go to every class....he's boring and annoying..it pays off tho
Just Bad
Reads straight from book. Exams are too long and hard.
The worst teacher I had this semester... His notes are directly from the book (so really no need to go to class). Boring as all hell, and half the time you can't hear him!
"Lectures" are just readings of the textbook from photocopied laminates. He did not attend one lab (which all professors are supposed to)! His exam questions are unpredictable at best and he was not able to cover all the material set forth in th
smart guy, but does not possess the skill to teach. no point going to class - just read book. not easy to get an A.
Taking Denes to be your professor for your chemistry class will be the worst choice you could make. The main reason for that is, because he doesn't teach; he literally stands infront of the students and reads the book for them. That's it.
This is the worst teacher I have ever had. No point in going to class since you can't understand his mumblings (some one asked him to speak clearer and he said no!), he just reads from the text anyway. Fortunatly the material is easy; an easy A with some effort (ie. read the text)
Don't bother with classes. I went to 1 and a half all semester, and got the highest mark. Enough said.
Classes are not stimulating, not interactive. He pretty much just photocopies textbook on laminates for presentation. No control over class. Only redeeming aspect is clarity of exam ie.straightforward, question structure is similar to those from textbook.
hes ok..gotta study alone though..
He sucks, plain and simple, he sucks at teaching. He may be an okay guy but he made the wrong choice in teaching...just read your textbook it's the same thing as his lectures.
the worst professor ever.. u cant hear him in class, he makes the simple materials impossible. very hard exams !

To be realistic, this guy simply mumbles what is in the book. Very unclear. No one can understand him. You are gonna have to self-teach yourself chemistry at this point. Don't even try to understand what he says. You'll get a headache. But he knows about chemistry though.
The man is a disaster. I literally paid $300 to have him read the book to me page by page by page! About 5 additional explanations all semester. Absolutely outrageous, terrible terrible teacher. His office is a damp, messy, disgusting place to go, he had to spend several mintes clearing off a corner of his desk so I could prop my textbook. Pathetic
Disorganized, Perma-late, Unclear are some words that could sum this guy up. I cannot believe he is still allowed to teach people.
Not good at all
OH MY GOD! I had the unfortunate luck to meet him in my first and my last semesters for the worst two chem courses ever!: 241, 242... It was a waste of time, money, and effort. I think my brain cells used to slowly commit suicide while I sat in his class. To those of you who have to deal with him: HA HA HA.
terrible prof, astonishing that he is allowed to at all yet alone at the university level
The most rotten professor at Concordia. Switch out of chemistry before you have to take him. Trust me.
He uses the textbook a lot, however, covers all the material in the course and helps you if you go to his office.
WORST,BAD,HORRIBLE..and everything else that means''NOT GOOD''.This prof is bad news. His test and exam was absolutely undoable! He would ask a question in the final from a small paragraph in one of the 21 chapters you have to study! It's impossible to know word-by-word from 21 chapters and actually remember them all. But that's what he wants.Pls avoi
Not the easiest prof, makes use of the text book a lot.Study from the text and you will get a good grade.
Avoid at all costs. Spends the entire lecture class reading over photocopies of the textbook. Has fully-multiple choice exams but counterbalances that by having the most inane, meaningless trivia as questions. Will find ways to make you lose marks, so pray to the good lord above that you score high in the tutorials, quizzes, and labs.
Very very bad teacher. Tells the class certain topics will not be on exams and then tests you on them then claims he never said anything. Go to class and try to understand the random facts he mumbles and read the book word for word. You will be tested on totaly random facts from the book as well.
Worst teacher ever. Makes you read hundreds of pages from the textbook and will test you on totally random facts mentioned once. Learn absolutely nothing about the topic. If he mentions something in class and says you do not need to know it make sure you know it because he will test you on it. He will later claim he never said not to know it.
Seems like a nice guy, but he absolutely cannot teach...
I have to agree with all the negative comments. I have no positive ones. The rumors are true, he does read the book to you off a projector. He will find a sentence in the book that mentions one little thing and make it worth the same # pts on exam as a big calculation question. Avoid at all cost. It's not worth it! Take chem another semester!

He is knowledgeable and motivated, but needs to better organize his time. We went far too slowly at the beginning of the term (when most concepts are easy) and rushed through content at the end. Grading took long considering our mid-term was multiple choice and we didn't get it back in class; it would've been useful to spend half a class going over
World class monster! Speaks quietly, destroys people's hearing with microphone static, doesn't see hands or hear questions. Shows illegible overheads photocopied from the book. Wastes half of the class putting papers around/trying to get the computer working. Ideal if you like to study by the book and not go to class, null as a teacher!
I will try to be objective: So start with negative comment: hard to understand him mumbeling, goes very in detail over very easy stuff and rushes over harder concepts. Positive point: seems like a good guy but unfortunately for us cannot teach. The exam was OK.
Guys do not take anything with him. He is probably a good scientist but zero professor. Your lecture will resemble reading hour: the book will be carefully read to you with no interpretations. the only advantage is an easy exam. but also a stupid one: half of questions will be who opened this and discoverd that. Take this class with Rogers.
boring lectures.
Nice guy, bad teacher. Recently integrated other teacher's powerpoints, which makes him even more lost. Takes 5 courses to cover 2 chapters, then skips over everything fast at the end of semester. Midterm was easy, but final is course-wide. Cerrie Rogers is better but tougher. If you read the book and DO THE EXERCISES you should be OK.
He's got an obnoxious way of speaking and personality. Missed the first class claiming that he was ill. His lectures are boring but if you've got insomnia you'll find his lectures work better than any prescription drugs. Instant effect! Absolutely one of the WORSE chemistry teachers of ConU. He should retire and stop annoying us already.
OBNOXIOUS way of speaking and personality. Faked illness in order to miss the first class. BORING lectures but if you've got insomnia, you'll find his lectures are more effective than any prescription drugs. Instant effect. DO US ALL A FAVOR AND RETIRE ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone who have to take Denes..please..read all this comment and believe what this people trying to say. I am the one who did not believe..and guess what..my entire semester had been ruin by him...avoid him with any cost.
Perfect example of a teacher who can make a motivated student lose interest in that particular topic in science and field in general. Terrible terrible teacher. Many students have gotten together and complained but as usual students are ignored even when the same complaints exist year after year
I never attended class. Go to tutorials and labs only and make sure you get good grades in them (very easy if you work a little bit). Midterm is a joke really... Final is awkwardly hard even though you studied a lot; that's why you should gather as many points in the easy stuff to avoid screwing the course with the final. Teacher himself is useless
Chem 242 students: for those who don't believe Denes is a bad teacher and would ruin your semister. Think twice before you take this challenge.
He is a very boring prof he has no speaking skills whatsoever, but he's an easy marker and you dont have to go to class to get a high mark as long as you study from the text by yourself you should be fine.
if you have basic chem knowledge, this class is a breeze, but Denes is reeeeeally not helpful at all, I actually felt myself getting more dumb as the semester progressed.
Fucking just horrible, mumbles not clear and just plain horrible at teacher. My math professor could do a better job.
Best advice I can give would be use the textbook, and do a lot of problems, because he is unfortuantely a poor lecturer and hard to avoid.
Pretty much had to teach myself the whole course. He mumbles all the time and you can't hear him. A really bad experience for me! I will never take a course thought by him again.
Literally the worst prof. I've ever had in my life. Read the book and watch khanacademy videos if you want to do well in this course. Attending lectures will actually make you unlearn what you know and make you dumber. Avoid this prof at all costs.
dont waste your time to take this course with him
He is by far the worst professor i have ever take a class with. He is massively unclear, not friendly, and not concise at all you need to know everything about anything. Best advice i can give is take the class at another university, because he is the only professor for chem 242. After taking his class i considered changing my major. Yes, that bad!
The prof is useless, going to lectures will make u dumb, he explains very easy problems so hard that will confuse u alot more so don't go. study the textbook.. he is so not helpful no offense
Seriously, heed all these reviews. I made the mistake of thinking everyone was exaggerating and I could make the most of it. He is an unbearable lecturer, rambling, and just generally NOT teaching. Khanacademy explained to me in 30 minutes what he supposedly was attempting to all these weeks. He will just confuse you more. Beware.
mid term is only on theory, and he doesn't know how to teach what so ever. in a completely different world up there. He just rambles in his esl voice.
The midterm is just multiple choice THEORY questions. He is helpful, but a very bad lecturer. He just read the slides and does not even look at students while teaching. Attending lectures is useless, just read the book and you'll be fine.
Difficult to understand his accent, and does not know how to present ideas well. Simple concepts which are fun to learn become confusing and incomprehensible. I had to practically teach myself all the concepts using the book and Khan Academy. The tests are very difficult and tricky, and are not graded fairly, you lose points for spelling.
Here is how to take this class: DO: thoroughly read the book and solve examples BEFORE class. Review in groups. Solve as many book questions as possible. Go to Prof's office for help as often as possible, be specific, show him that you are serious. Use online resources. DON'T: rely on class to teach you. skip class. This is hard but totally doable
He is a very good teacher, cheerful, and approachable He always stays for hours after the class to answer his student's questions, and he didn't even mind me asking him questions for a complete hour in his office hours during the exam. Chemistry classes are very heavy in the theory part so it's expected that he reads from the slides which is summery
Only 6 labs, reports are long but there's no lab exam. Denes is very sweet man, He lets the class decide midterm date, he held a bonus review class, and will not count midterm if grade on final is . read the book, know crystallography, and all be fine. lastly 1012 passed, and there were A's given. his final was very tricky, but its a good class
He is not a good lecturer. I think he teaches too much. When I was writing the final, I was in a class with 50 students and I overheard him say that he had 10 classrooms currently writing the exam! Oddly, he is an excellent 1 to 1 explainer so I recommend staying after class and asking him questions or going to office hours.
the best there is and the best there ever be no need for studying denes is awesome
Lectures are long and boring. Material not interesting. Explanations not clear enough.
Memorize the textbook and you still won't pass the final
His lectures kinda stink, ended up not attending many towards the end (accent too thick and reads right from the slides). However Denes is a sweet old man who is willing to help and more than happy to answer your questions. His office hours are very helpful! If you get a really sucky chem grade, blame not studying enough, not him.
why is he still in the university? he is too old to explain, even he can't hear people when they are talking.
He's really hard to understand during lectures because he is old and has a very strong accent. I wouldn't have learned anything if not for the tutorials and the online assignments.
His lectures are almost impossible to understand. It's as if he doesn't understand that the people in the class don't already know the material. For him, all the material is easy stuff, so he'll throw up a concept and say "but you should already know this, this is easy" and then move on. He's a very nice guy, but he's a terrible teacher.
Denes is a tough one. He's not a good professor, and strictly reads from his slides for the entire class. He's hard to understand, and seems lost and confused often. His midterm and final were unlike anything we did in class or in the tutorials or labs, involving much more complex problems than anyone I talked to had seen.
Avoid him at all cost. 35 students failed the course and 23 were in D rangs. Only 4 students got an A- no B+ and the rest were B and C. Total students in the class were 90
Lol 60+ failed the course in Fall2016. Don't ever take this teacher.
He's absolutely TERRIBLE at lecturing, and HIS EXAMS ARE INSANELY LONG!!! Most of the class got bad grades because of that! Don't take him if you want to be on the safe side!
just terrible. Won't answer any of his emails, won't tell us our final grades, and don't let me start on his lectures and the trolly he keeps rolling behind him, holding all his kitchen stuff yakk
He barely answers questions, his teaching style is to put up a powerpoint slide and just tell you you need to have it memorized before moving on and blabbering on about useless information that's way less important than what you need to know. Would NOT recommend, especially if you're a beginner in chemistry.
Oh my! AVOID AVOID AVOID. Worst prof I've ever had the (dis)pleasure of taking. Such boring lectures, he just rambles, and never responds to emails. Students started dropping like flies in his lectures. Hes nice sure but disorganized, unclear, hard to understand, took him over a month to post midterm grades and it was all mult. choice. AVOID
He only reads from the slides, doesn't give a break in a 2 hr 30 min class which was at night, he mumbles a lot and since he has hearing problems you can't really ask questions, all he cares about is the history part of chem ( so many questions from those parts in the midterm ) basically chem205 was self study for me which was time consuming
Cons: strong accent (hard to understand) teaches very fast (skims through hard material), tough exams and harsh grader (takes away points for spelling mistakes). Pros: very helpful during office hours, gives a lot of hints in class about what will be asked on exams. Very good teacher when he's not squeezed for time. His slides are useful
Honestly, just don't go to class if you have to have him as your prof. Just keep up with the material outside of class because all he does is read from slides and his english is so difficult to understand. Doesn't answer questions well. Avoid at all costs.
I'm writing this review and the semester is not even over yet. He lets you know what he wants for the midterm, but then will test you on half the things you have never seen before and not the stuff you were expected to focus on. It's his last semester, so i feel like he just doesn't care and wants to go out with a bad bang.
Dr. Denes is very nice but he makes the it impossible to pass chem205. Im currently retaking the class with another prof and i got an A on my midterm when I failed the first time with Dr. Denes which makes no sense. I have requested to see my final from last semester and its the end of the new semester and I havent even heard from him yet.
he spoke unclearly went on about information that we wouldnt be tested on and spent 1/3 of the semester in the hospital so we had subs teaching us off his slides who had no idea what his slides were going on about. If I hadnt had a g teacher in highschool I wouldve failed. Im3 days into semster2 and I dont have my final grade
If you're new to chem, switch professors. Thick accent, difficult to understand. I went to less than half of the lectures. Midterm was confusing I barely passed. Final was easier as it was not created solely by him. He is good for meeting with you one on one, but not in a lecture scene. He was ill this semester, idk if he's still teaching. Nice guy
Very hard to understand. Thick accent. Just reads the power point slides.
Lectures are hard to follow and go at a fast pace, hard if you don't have much time aside classes to read the book. All in all, I was able to learn most of it in his classes, but still had to practice a lot (which is the purpose of the tutorials and the assignments). Tests follow what was in lecture and in his slides and seemed fair.
20 minutes into my first lecture with him I was looking online at if I could switch lectures . CHEM205 has very simple course content that was high school level, but his inability to stay on topic, make coherent sentences, and understand his students made it a way harder class than it needed to be. 45% of his students failed the class this semester
DO NOT TAKE HIM HIS ENGLISH IS SO HEAVY HE JUST READS THE SLIDE BE PREPARED TO TEACH URSELF THE WHOLE COURSE!!
He was my worst teacher on whole of my life. Avoid if you can! Will learn nothing in class.
DO NOT TAKE A COURSE WITH THIS GUY. He should have retired a long time ago, he slurrs his words with a monotone accent so he is undeniably hard to understand. He makes the class so boring you can't follow and his explanations are horrible, like he's giving a course in his own head. You will have to teach yourself.
Very bad professor. Barely cares or bothers himself to help his students succeed. Always spotting mistakes in his powerpoint and doesn't explain properly in class. He was once asked a normal question in class requiring a simple explanation from him; however, his reply was that you should be able to know it yourself, then proceeded to the next slide
Is hard of hearing, wont wear a hearing aid, slurs his words and has a thick accent. Wont cover anything important in lectures, and will be behind teaching what you need for your tutorials. Writes on the white board with dried out markers so you cant see. Drop his class and re take another semester with someone else or prepare to teach yourself
DO NOT AND I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS QITH THIS PROFESSOR!!! HE IS THE WORSE PROFESSOR I HAD TO DEAL WITH IN MY ENTIRE EXISTENCE! I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE UNIVERSITY KEEPS HIM STILL!? HE HAS SUCH BAD REVIEWS AND IT'S JUSTIFIED! HE NEVER ANSWERS HIS EMAILS, HE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO TEACH, HIS EXAMS ARE DIAJOINTED WITH THE LABS AND TUTORIALS!
Run! If you discover that you have a class with him, change groups, and if the other groups are full, DROP THE CLASS and take it with another professor when you can. TRUST ME it's in your best interest! HE NEEDS TO GET FIRED ASAP! HE IS A THREAT TO THE FUTURE OF STUDENTS!
Worth taking if you like to learn on your own. He goes over slides and adds explanations to it. He should continue to teach online with his recorded lectures (current situation) to allow students to increase the speed of the video (he talks really slow and takes long pauses). I would suggest that Concordia form him to be an online teacher.
Oh boy, do I wish I visited this site before taking this professor. I can confirm the sentiments here, as taking his class was a truly unpleasant experience. When you ask him for advice for studying, he accuses you of wanting easy test answers, and to "just study the textbook". Prepare to teach yourself and for trick, convoluted exam questions.
Bad online teacher. Muted himself for long stretches of class without noticing a number of times. He's a slow lecturer, so classes are often 4 weeks behind other sections. Midterm is random and doesn't reflect what you were taught. He's slow to upload lecture recordings and takes forever to return e-mails. He made chemistry very difficult.
I didnt even think to read the reviews beforehand but wish I did! The midterm for this class was ridiculous and didnt pertain to the information given in class. We had an allotted time of 1 hour to complete and I spent majority of that trying to comprehend what he was saying with his fictitious elements and zaps.
Straight up just the worst teacher I've ever had.
Do not take this teacher. I was unsure why I was getting notification to get Chem 101 to do as it wasn't a pre requisite for 205. He was so rude he called me lazy for asking if it is mandatory. I called him out and he never answered back, same thing for unable to see zoom lectures. Never answered me. I dropped the class. Save yourselves
Not a fun time. Was not clear when teaching and did not cover appropriate material to allow you to succeed, was never nice to communicate to.
Congratulations for those who got A+. Do your best next time!
Very slow lecturer, doesn't seem to know what the rest of the chem department is doing. Midterm has almost nothing to do with given assignments or material covered in tutorial.
Be ready to teach yourself the material - class and powerpoints are not very helpful. Get a gen chem paper textbook (McMurray & Fay's "Chemistry" saved me), make sure the material corresponds, and solve the problems as you read through the chapters. Do go through his powerpoints afterwards, to make sure you understand what he went over in class.
Jesus christ save yourself and drop this guy. Hey atleast I passed the lab portion lmfao
He's very slow and boring, definitely not suggested
do not take chem with him
Just dont take this guy.
Creates slides that bounce from topic to topic and just reads them out slowly for 3h. You're better off googling questions rather than asking him most of the time. Just use his presentations as an index to what you need to know and study all the topics by yourself.
He overcomplicated everything. The midterm... not remotely similar to assignments/quizzes. I told him and he said "Obviously the midterm is not going to have the exact same questions as the quizzes", no duh, I don't expect that but if I have to check to see if my test is for chem 205 test that's got to indicate somethings off. Horrible teacher.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF! This professor was the final straw that made me drop out of the bio program. Halfway through the semester I stopped attending his classes entirely to attend another professors instead. That other professor is probably the only reason I passed Chem that year, and that grade haunts my GPA to this day.
DO NOT TAKE HIM PLEASE! DO YOURSELF A FAVOR
Gave our midterm grades back 3 weeks before our finals. What was put on the midterm had nothing to do with what he taught us
This man made me reconsider taking chem in the future. The midterm did not reflect what we learnt and his lectures are a pain to sit through because: -he appears to know the material but doesn't teach it well -he isn't enthusiastic and drones on and on (he's boring and doesn't retain your attention) -he talks quietly and it's difficult to hear him
He said that certain chapters would be on the midterm but made a single question from a different chapter worth 25% of the exam. When people complained he said that they were just slandering him. The lectures are almost incomprehensible and everything I learned in that class had to be self taught.
He is not a clear speaker, so its difficult to understand what he is saying in the lectures (like actually impossible). On top of that, he wears a mask AND whispers so you really cannot understand because you cant even read his lips as he speaks. However, he is easy to reach. Midterm, final and assignments are not too bad, just be a good student.
One of the worst professors. Didn't teach anything, just read the presentations the whole 3h lecture. Very tough midterm, final, prepare to study everything on your own, doesn't explain anything just repeats the presentation when asked a question. Lectures were so boring, avoid at all costs, take any other professor. Save your mental health!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF PLEASE. All he does is read the slides out of the textbook. Dosent really teach anything, his lectures are useless. I started going to different lectures after the midterm and I learnt more in the last 4 lectures I went to; than the whole rest of the semester.
he is so hard to understand and he just reads off the slides
Avoid this professor at all costs. His lectures are dull and unhelpful, simply reading from the textbook. Exams don't align with what's taught. Prepare to teach yourself the material. unstuck ai and other study tools were essential for surviving this class.
He mumbles through the slides. He barely notices if you have a question and has to stumble around to hear you. Deceptive midterm with a 20-question MC class average of 45%. Good luck trying to learn from him. He also took a month to grade midterms. The good thing is the participation grade of the class(2.5%) is a Moodle quiz, unlike other profs.
this is not personal but ill be professionally fair , Avoid him at all costs , i failed CHEM 205 because of him , when i remember those days , it gives me ick , my gpa got destroyed because of this class with him , he just keeps reading his boring slides for 3 hours nothing else . if ever u chose him be ready for self-study !
Do not take this professor, his lectures are barely effective and tedious; his email communications rude and disdainful; and my midterm had a mistake on it that lost me a lot of time. Despite him being a fellow frenchman, objectively, do not take his classes!
he made it his mission to make you hate living in the same universe as him, literally the reason why my friend dropped uni, people stop showing up to his lectures because theyre useless too and at one point it will turn into a history class. if you want to continue loving yourself run away from him
If you can avoid his class, please do so. It is not worth the stress and struggle for a general chemistry class. His lectures were not meaningful for the midterm yet alone the final. I stopped going to his lectures after the midterm. Be ready to teach yourself everything, and I mean everything. Good luck.
Don't ever think of choosing this prof if you want to pass this course , he is thé worst
There are two quizzes on Moodle that are worth 6% each and they are only open for one day. This class almost broke me. I hate taking the bixi all the way across the city in the rain to listen to useless lectures.
A seemingly nice but frustratingly difficult prof to manage. His presentations are 3 hours of mumbling off the slides with no examples given. Good luck asking him ANY kind of questions; he is almost completely deaf. Any course he teaches WILL be a self-study course. Your time will be best spent teaching yourself or attending a different lecture.
