Very unclear! Hard exit quizzes/worksheets and talks as though everyone understands..doesn't care if you fail. Either you know it or you don't..whatever you do get out of that lab or class ASAP!
Very helpful and always willing to answer any questions. Treats students like humans. Provides enough info for exit quizzes and worksheets if you take notes. I definitely recommend her if you are willing to put forth some effort to learn the material.
Very nice, very helpful. She can joke around with us but we still learn from her. She is hard but not that hard.
Very helpful. Sometimes unclear on information, but if you go to her and ask her, she will help you with all of the worksheets. Hard quizes, but if you make the effort to go see her, she will spend time on helping you understand.
okay. She makes the lab WAY too hard. Her quizzes and worksheets are hard. Dont buy the lab manual, you dont turn it in, only graphs. Very unclear. I think she sucked. labs are easy to do, but quizzes are hard. THere are WAY better lab teachers than her.
If you are passionate about biology and desire more knowledge, I would recomend her. She does ask a lot of you, but just as we learned about bio, she learned how to lead lab. She grew as a prof and figured out that worksheets were better than quizes.
Very nice teacher. Very hard grader though. Very thouroghly explains each lab.
She's very nice and very helpful and really knows her stuff. You have to work, but hey--do you want to understand this stuff or not!? She's there to help if you make the effort. And her kids have great names.
Prof. Sass is wonderful, it was this class that sucked! She is fair, impartial, and helpful. She tells you exactly what is expected, without any inferences.
Her notes are sometimes hard to follow, but she will always clarify them if you ask. She makes the lab easy to perform, but still tests your knowledge with her worksheets.
Professor Sass is very helpful and extremely nice. Her worksheets for labs were reasonable, but I don't know anyone who received a perfect score on those worksheets. Tough grader.
Great professor.
She was a really sweet lady and willing to help with anything you need. She made class pretty painless. Be careful with your papers though- she gives decent grades but will tear them apart, scrutinizing every detail!
Horrible...do not tke her...she is so scattter brained that it is so confusing to follow her, you HAVE TO read between the lines on everything that she talks about, she goes to fast and her lectures are all graphs that you can not understand, becuase you are trying so hard to write what she says...Frustrating class....
nice lady, however, not the best professor! isn't very clear on describing things and teaches material extremely fast, assuming you understand everything! she is willing to answer any questions but by the time you take all the info. in and think of a question, she's moved on!
Prof. Sass uses two main phrases in class: "I'll get to that in just a second," and "Yeah...so...ummm..." Her notes constantly repeat and she jumps all over...her lecture isn't necessarily fast..it's just challenging to find what she's talking about! She could probably teach a higher biology well, but would NEVER recommend her for a beg. level.
Do NOT take her class. She goes very in depth to things, but doesn't teach the basics. Her powerpoint presentations are all pictures, hardly any words. She says things, then 5 mins later says she made a mistake. Her quizzes are impossible. The questions aren't even covered in lecture.
i had her for lecture and lab, and i struggled the entire time. her quizes and tests are very challenging. her powerpoints are just a lot of pictures from the book, which hello, dosent really help.
75% of the students are failing. This teacher does not teach. Her quizzes do not go over what she teachs. She give you a piture power point and fails to teach the basics by going too far and hard too fast. I am an A student and i am failing her class. Dont take her.
I do not like this professor! she is an aweful teacher! she goes into depth about things that you dont need to know and uses big madeup words to sound smart.
The quizzes are hard, but if you pay attention in lecture then they are manageable. If you take this class, make sure to use her office hours. She is VERY helpful. I'm terrible at science, and I have a B+ in the class because she is so helpful. She wants us to pass the class. Tests are much easier than the quizzes, and worth alot more.
This professor is by FAR the WORST prof I have ever had. This is my 4th semester and I'm had some bad profs but none like Sass. She talks in her own language that no on can understand. Her exams and quizzes are so HARD. I studied for 4 days for one of her exams and still failed it. The class average of one of the exams was a 59%. Don't take SASS!
This professor is the worst professor I've ever had. Her power points are all pictures and her tests and quizzes do not come from the class material. She stinks at writing them! She is unorganized and confuses you by teaching something and then five minutes later saying she made a mistake. Do Not take her class if you don't want you GPA to drop!!
She is a really nice lady but a terrible teacher. I took the lab for BIO 120 and it was just terrible. She didn't give us any instructions and never paid attention to us inside of the lab...don't take her lab
Her quizzes are insane and her exams are even worse. She goes way to indepth with material that my tutor had never even learned. I was meeting with the professor once a week and my tutor twice and still did terrible. I did not understand half of the words she was saying and her assesments are worded so bad that you won't know what is being asked
Professor Sass is a horrible teacher. Listen to everyone else. She is a nice lady, but does not teach the material well at all. Bio 120 is NOT a "do it yourself" course (if it were, I would not be paying Professor Sass...) but it seems that way at times because in order to learn, you have to teach yourself. She does nothing.
Had her for lab; it's true, she is very scatterbrained and unclear about things; however, if you just ask her, she will explain it to you over and over until you get it. She also is a very tough grader, but lets you correct and resubmit your worksheet a lot of the time. She really is a very nice lady, she was fine for lab.
I am very disappointed with Professor Sass. Had I known Bio 120 with her would be hell, I would not have taken it. Save yourself. Listen to everyone else. Sass would be nice to have as a friend, not a professor.
SASS STINKS! She's the reason why I changed my major! I studied for 4 DAYS for one of her exams also choosing to not study for another exam I had the same day so I could do more bio, and guess what? I FAILED IT. I never missed class and I always listened. She talks but doen't make sense. The book doesn't help caused she tests on her jibber jabber.
NIGHT MARE. She is a very nice lady. But Her quizzes and exams are just rediculous. She uses only pictures for her powerpoint, with no lables on the printouts. And half the time, she doesnt even explain what she is talking about. On the flip side, if you absolutely HAVE to take her..at the end of the semester she did a dance to a biology movie.
I'm an A/B student and 90% of the time I had no clue what she was talking about. She gets off topic alot and isn't clear on what we need to know for the exams. Also, her exams are absolutely horrible. Her questions are very confusing and if she tries to explain herself it only makes the situation worse.
Had her for SWS Biomedical Ethics...she jumps ALL over the place and nearly impossible to follow.
Boring and a pretty tough class. I wouldn't take her again.
This is the worst professor I have ever taken. I would not reccomend this professor to anybody!
scatterbrained, doesnt know what she's talking about half of the time, really nice and will try to help but cant, online quizzes are impossible, dont go to class they're a waste of time cuz she posts ppts on bb, can get a good grade if you read the book and basically teach the bio to yourself.
I had her for BIO 120 and took her section of BIO 355 because she helped me to enjoy Biology. No, I would not call either class easy in the least bit but she makes the information interesting. She is the most helpful prof I have had. She is extremely understanding of both demanding schedules and things that are going on in your life. Awesome lady.
I really, really enjoyed Prof. Sass! I had her for BIO 355 (Human Genetics) and would highly recommend her to anyone. She might seem scatterbrained at times, but she's very fair and her exams are DIRECTLY from her power point notes, not the book! Go to her office hours frequently. She even filled out another college recommendation form for me.
She is very helpful and definitely knows what she is talking about. It sometimes is hard to follow her because she talks very quickly but is eager to answer questions. Her tests are very hard so studying is a MUST and don't miss any classes. I got a C but still got a lot out of the class. If you are up for the challenge she is a great teacher.
Prof. Sass is an awesome professor she is super helpful. The only reason anyone would struggle in her class is if they never went and never looked at their notes. Her exams are very fair and she helps with homework assignments so you can get full points. I would highly recommend her for Bio 355!
great teacher! tests were fair, she never had anything on it that wasn't talked about. she also gives partial credit. very straight forward and clear, she liked to answer any questions even if they weren't what we were talking about. office hours were helpful, she was always so nice!
She is a very nice professor, gives you choices on everything even exams. Her tests were sort of tough but not impossible. Not very helpful outside of the classroom, but helpful in class.
She is an awesome prof. Really nice and has a sense of humor. Helpful and will answer questions of all sorts. If you go to lecture and read the book her tests aren't terrible, but you have to study. Definatly take prof. Sass.
Very nice and enthusiastic about teaching, but her lectures tend to be a little confusing at times. She does offer a lot of options about assignments and exams. This class was harder than I was expecting in the first place, but I would say she's a good professor.
I loved genetics with Prof. Sass. She is VERY intelligent, and knows how to clarify confusing topics. It is a challenging class, but with Prof. Sass an A or B is in reach with some effort.
She was extremely hard. Studied hours for the exams but they were worded so strangely that it was hard to follow. Most of her exams are multiple choice but with almost all double blanks or A and B, B and C, or all of the above situations. She's very nice however not overly helpful all the time (especially on assignments) wouldn't recommend :/
She is so awesome.....one of the nicest professors at GVSU. She knows the material well and will help you learn it. She is extremely approachable. I recommend her to all my friends taking genetics.
Prof Sass was awesome. She will help you with anything and if you pay attention and stay up to date on all the extra work she gives out you will be fine. Best prof. for 355 by far.
I heard that genetics was hard, but with Sass it was super easy! she let you know exactly what you needed to know for the exams, and even gave a list of the questions for the final. the material is somewhat challenging - you do need to study- but if you come to class you'll do fine. don't buy the book; if you're always there you won't ever need it.
Very helpful and wants her students to succeed. Has open instant messaging chats the night before exams and allows re-dos on quizzes. She definitely sets you up for success, you just have to put in the effort.
She does not reply to emails promptly nor does she post grades when she says she's going to. I worked out a formula for how soon grades will actually be posted to when she SAYS they will be posted. TIME + 2 DAYS. The day before finals she couldn't even hardly ake it into her office to talk with people!!! It was annoying.
I DID NOT enjoy prof sass at all! I found her unhelpful when it came to meeting outside of class, her office hours conflicted with another class and i emailed her several times to find an alternate time, she either never got back to me or never gave me a time to meet her. DO NOT TAKE HER. a lot say shes good, but i STRONGLY disagree. VERY HARD!!!!
Genetics is a hard class, Dr. Sass was very helpful - sure she let you struggle a bit - but it is through these struggles that you learn. If you are looking for someone to give you the answers it won't happen in this class - you learn through doing and applying what you have learned to questions.
Dr. Sass is such a sweet lady--she honestly wants her students to succeed. Very flexible with her grading and offers a lot of extra credit (just ask) Probably the best genetics prof, just attend class!
Take genetics with Sass. Go to class and ask for her help, she is very gracious when it comes to grades and wants you to do well. You actually learn the material and the effort you put forth will show in you grade.
Prepare to teach yourself! I suggest recording the lectures as her PPTs aren't helpful; she'd rather you listen to her then get useful notes. She often gets lost in her own lecture. The homework often rarely relates to the lecture material, unless you find the obscure book section where the information is found. Avoid!
Sass is a bit scatter-brained, but if you put in the effort and ask questions, she will point you in the right direction. Towards the end of the experiemnts, everything came together. NOTEBOOKS - she says start right away but i reccomend waiting until a couple weeks before they are due. she adds what she specifically wants in them around then.
Professor Sass is pretty good overall. Her tests can be evil, but she allows grades to be improved. Often times there is little useful information on her powerpoints. Definitely take good notes during class, because she'll briefly mention something once and then throw it on the test. If you need help go to her office hours, she's super helpful.
Sass is pretty scatter-brained, but overall a nice lady and is very willing to help. she can be hard to understand when she is explaining something, but she'll keep going until you understand. didn't feel that the class was too hard, but the required lab notebooks are very laborious and intense.
I loved Sass. She's really passionate about what she teaches. Exams could be difficult, but she gave many free response questions and you only had to answer a few. She also curves and gives extra credit. It was evident she wanted her students to succeed. Readily available to answer questions in office hours.
I agree with Prof Sass lacking focus sometimes. She talks about a lot of good stuff but sometimes it isn't clear what you need to know. Her tests and quizzes sometimes border on impossible by the way that they are phrased, but she allows for improvement. Definitely go to her office hours though! She's super-helpful and will make sure you understand
While professor Sass was difficult I would recommend her. She expects you to learn a lot on your own but she is helpful. As long as you show you're really trying and can improve over the semester she'll help you out. Exams and homework are difficult but she's not impossible. She herself is incredibly nice and helpful.
Sometimes she seems to be all over the place but she is very helpful and will meet you halfway. She's very approachable. She kind of has limited office hours but she's easy to track down. Very helpful and gives lots of necessary feedback.
Great prof! She tells you exactly what she is looking for. Exams are not hard, study and you should do well. Many options to make up points lost on examsquizzes. Definitely a lot of work, but well worth it. Enjoyed the class overall.
Super nice lady but she is just too smart! You MUST read before each lecture or you will have no idea what she is talking about. Exams are multiple choice and short answer and she gives you options on which ones you answer. She is always available whether it's e-mail or office hours. Very busy lady but always gives good feedback. Homework weekly.
LOVED Dr. Sass! Very smart lady who expects her students to work hard! She is willing to adjust her style and teaching to the class' preference and abilities and will literally do as much as she can to help you do well in class! However, the key word is HELP, she won't give you answers, but any self-respecting student wants this! TAKE HER!
Dr. Sass is a good professor, however she tends to explain concepts very quickly and expects you to grasp them right away. She's very hyper and runs all over the room, but that seemed to make her very able to help out if you needed it. VERY easy grader. As long as you put in the effort she expects, you'll do well.
Dr. Sass is a wonderful professor. I enjoyed taking genetics with her. Lectures were fast paced, but anything you didn't understand could be taken to her office hours and she would clear it up well. A really nice person, and my favorite professor in the bio department.
P. Sass is the sweetest little lady ever! Her tests and quizzes make you think, but she's always willing to answer questions and clear things up after class or at office hours. She's a fan of group work, so be prepared for that too. I HIGHLY recommend taking the lecture and the lab BIO376 at the same time.
Professor Sass is an awesome professor! There is a lot to her class though. You have weekly homework and weekly online quizzes. Her quizzes and tests are a bit challenging but if you study and know the material well, you'll do fine. Even though there was always homework, it helped me in the long run when there was a test!
Professor Sass was one of my favorite profs I've had at Grand Valley. Definitely take her if you can!! She is always willing to clarify questions during class and has flexible office hours. The weekly quizzes and homework assignments are challenging, but she always gives makeups after them. Loved her!
G. Sass was a true pleasure to have as a professor in lecture. This course may be a bit difficult especially with a very busy schedule but I feel that it's impossible to fail. She's extremely kind and loveable. She's also an EXTREMELY lenient grader as long as you get the general idea of things. I will actually miss this lecture. Very interesting.
Sass is an amazing prof. She is clearly passionate about genetics and is very involved with her students. She cares a lot about students and will help you get the grade you desire. Offers tons of help outside of class and has awesome test prep sessions in office hours before exams.
G. Sass is a wonderful human, and it truly passionate about what she is teaching. She WANTS everyone to do good. She explains ideas very quick and expects you to grasp them. I did more work for this class than I did for the rest of my classes combined. She's not awful, but she does grade hard and expects a lot out of you for a 1 credit course.
This class is very reliant on group projects. It was very lecture heavy for an issues course, and I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected to. All of the presentations are graded by groups, which I disliked very much. However, she truly does care about the class and puts a lot of time into preparing lectures. I found them very boring though.
Professor Sass I the nicest professor I've had thus far. She really cares about your success and if you go to her office hours, she is very helpful. The concept assessments are difficult, but if you are willing to work for it - you will get a good grade.
This was an incredibly difficult class. I spent the majority of my time this past semester focusing on this class. The material is difficult to grasp and the quizzes/exams are set up to trick you. Sass is very helpful if you ask to meet with her outside of class. Overall, read the book, go to genetics tutoring, get all of the help that you can get.
This class can for sure be challenging but Dr. Sass makes it so much better. She is very helpful and gives you so many resources to practice and learn the concepts. She also makes time outside of class to hold study sessions before the exams. I had a hard time with this class at times, but Dr. Sass always helped me through things.
Dr. Sass is the sweetest lady who cares so much about her students. she learned all our names in the lecture ( probably 70 students) and checked up on us before tests. she goes out of her way to schedule review sessions and help as much as we need. class is lecture heavy and ppt.s are very clustered making them hard to study from. Overall good prof
I would have to say that Professor Sass is one of my favorite professors at gvsu. Professor sass really care about she teaches and wants her students to fully understand what is taught in this course while also trying to make it fun. I highly recommend taking her for both BIO 375 and BIO 376 because she provides a lot of help with the labs in class
Sass is great! Took her for BIO 375. Powerpoint, but she makes her own. Attendance isn't huge, but should go. If you're not doing great, gives opportunities and advice to get grade up. Online quizzes help boost grade! If you care about your education, she will help you out as much as she can!
It is a difficult course as you have to put in a considerable amount of effort to get a high grade. The concept assessments are difficult particularly the multiple choice section where many of them are designed to trip you up. Make sure to answer as many short answer as you can because she will give partial credit for it.
Professor Sass is a wonderful (also hilarious) professor and person, but prepare for a very work-intensive class with extremely difficult exams. Know the material inside and out; you will need that knowledge for the multiple choice questions. Always take the optional quizzes! Nothing else really prepares you as well as they do.
Sass is really nice and super sweet, however I found this class to be pretty difficult. You have an exam just about every other week, and although they are short, they are HARD and you never feel like you have enough time. She's not a bad professor, just be prepared to work
Professor Sass is amazing! She really cares for her students and learns all names. She does not take attendance but at the end of the semester there is an overall attendance grade. She is always available to help students and will keep going over things to make sure they understand. I purchased the book and didn't use it. I know others did.
Dr. Sass is friendly and knowledgeable. She's so-so on lecture style. I thoroughly disliked the group work. Her powerpoints are great. BIO375 is a difficult class, but I think she, generally, did a good job mitigating that.
G. Sass is such a gem. She cares for her students and LOVES genetics! It's refreshing to see someone passionate about what they're teaching. Going to class & her review sessions helped a lot. Once you understand her exams, they become easier but her MC is hard. She's big on group work, but you are allowed to work alone! 10/10 recommend for lab too!
She is such a sweetheart! Sass was very understanding when we went online, and always willing to answer a question even outside of her office hours. I would recommend her to anyone!
This woman is nice, but I have never even seen this hard of questions on MCAT prep tests... I have talked to other professors and they have all said she is known to be super difficult, and both me and one of my classmates have met with the tutor weekly and the tutor doesn't even know how to do her assignments! Good person, insanely frustrating prof
Professor Sass is amazing. She really cares about her students and wants them to do well in the course. Her questions especially the multiple choice is hard. Do the practice problems she provides they will help you really understand her questions. Keep asking her questions when. you're confused and you will do great in the course.
This prof has super high expectations of you. The class is not impossible, but it is very hard. Exams are really tricky-- know your stuff and go to reviews. The lecture videos were online and really long; I found it hard to keep up with them. I do give her kudos because she offers flexibility in exam/quiz dates if you ask. Nice lady, hard class!
Sass is such a sweet lady. You may be overwhelmed in the first few weeks, but I promise it gets better. Every test you get a chance to get points back. She is seriously so sweet and passionate about what she does. She delivers content via Panopto video which I wasn't a fan of, but if you go over the outlines before each quiz and test you will be ok
Prof Sass is a GEM. I have never met a lab prof who loves what they do more than she does. She has such positive energy and is so excited to teach every week. She will work with you if you are having trouble and truly cares that you succeed as long as you try. Absolutely adored her.
I loved Professor Sass she absolutely was the best! She took so much time out of her day to answer a question or send you additional research articles if you needed or wanted to learn more about a specific genetic modified piece.
This lab was difficult but working in groups helps. I felt like I had lacked a lot of prior knowledge just because it had been a bit since I had BIO 120. I passed with a B+, but it was a difficult lab with lots of reading material that was hard to even learn from to prep for the lab.
GSass is seriously one of the best professors I have had, and you can tell she truly loves what she teaches, as well as actually teaching it. She is super quirky, and keeps lectures interesting even though they are super content heavy. Grading is super flexible, she really wants students to receive the best grade they can.
GSass really kept the class interesting with her quirky personality. She is such a sweet lady and super flexible with assignments in addition to multiple submission opportunities after feedback was given to earn more points. Anyone can tell she is super passionate about biology and has so much more knowledge to share if interested.
I don't think I'll ever meet someone so excited about genetics again. Sass is so nice and will talk about genetics all day if you let her. has 'hw' but its optional and there for a grade boost (do it). Genetics was hard for me but a good grade is obtainable if you practice and ask her questions. Love her office hours!
Had Sass for both lecture and lab, and I absolutely loved her. You can tell she is very passionate about genetics and brings her own humor into her lectures. She's always willing to reexplain something and wants you to get the best grade you can: if you put in the work. I couldn't imagine taking this course with someone else. Take her!
TAKE GENETICS WITH HER! I came into this class so scared because genetics is a hard class. She is very passionate about her work and makes class entertaining. She truly cares and has many optional assignments that raise your grade. Her exams are hard, but the optional assignments help a lot! She is so sweet, and I cannot recommend her more!
She cares a lot about genetics as a subject, but I can't recommend her as a professor. She approaches subjects as if you already know everything about it and her "lectures" are just review. She kind of just talks about stuff instead of trying to get you to understand it, and then tests you on it as if she did. So so so frustrating and hard. AVOID!
She was super sweet, but she did often assume you just knew what she was talking about. Exams were set up in a way to see you succeed as well as lots of extra credit to help out
Great professor she was funny and caring and gives good feedback.
Very nice and always willing to help in class but is a grade dumper. I was sitting at around a 97% until about a week before the final presentation and then before she had even graded my final, my grade had gone down to a 90% and then my final came in and i got just below a 90. Very frustrating to believe that you are doing well until the very end.
