A nice person most of the time, but a terrible teacher. Tries to punish the students. Do not take her.
Very clear and well-paced lectures. Excellent use of examples. Notes based on well-outlined powerpoint slides. Tests just over lecture notes. Very willing to help and answer questions in and out of class.
She explains things slowly and deliberately, making for a pretty easy class.
She is the sweetest person.Don't be fooled though, nice doesn't = easy.If you are looking for an easy A, I wouldn't reccomend her. Otherwise, she is extremely helpful and concerned with students understanding of material.Good lectures, very enthusiastic.
A really kind person, also a good teacher. Lectures were well structured and covered only the meaningful information and didn't dwell on little details or unrelated topics. Very good understanding of student comprehension.
She is an incredible professor and really cares for her students. She encourages office hours! Her class is not an easy A, but she gives out study guides of all the material you are responsible to know. She also gives out extra credit!
don't question her on her methods, she will make life a living hell
She is really nice and sweet but her tests should be given to 400 level bio students, not 101 students. Her tests are way more difficult than other 101 teachers. Take someone else.
Very nice woman. Watch out for her husband though, he's creepy.
Great teacher! As long as you understand the concepts she lectures about and complete the study guides, you are on your way to an A. You do get a lot from this class :]
She talks to her students as if they were kindergarteners and often covers things on the exams that were not covered in class. I like the labs and the subject matter, but I think she's an awful teacher. Also refuses to use a mic in huge classes making it difficul to hear her lectures.
i really think she is a great teacher. she is young and probably just getting in to it, but without knowing anything about bio before the class, im getting an A. i have also heard that the other 101 teacher in spring 2005 was A LOT more work. much harder that connell. i would tell ya to take bio from connell (plus she's easy on the eyes)
She is a nice lady but she talks to her students as if they were in middle school. Tests didn't always follow the study guide but quizzes are taken in groups of 2 and there's an opportunity for extra credit. If you want a fairly easy science GUR, I'd recommend her.
She was my lab instructor for Biol 349. She was super helpful and very nice. She didn't write our quizes, because Lapsansky did, but she did an excellent job teaching the lab section so the quizes weren't too difficult. She was helpful in answering questions in lab and I really enjoyed lab with her as an instructor.
Connell does an excellent job of explaining things and simplifying them so the students understand. Her class is easy but you still learn new and interesting things.
really helpful, nice, gives extra credit opportunities
Lectures are scattered and jump from subject to subject. Seems impossible for her to phrase things in more than one way. No matter where I sit, the people surrounding me in lecture are always complaining. Lab is also grueling and expects a lot from you for a 4 credit 100-level class. If you can, take this at Whatcom, something I now regret not doing
connell is super awesome. i bombed the first test, and she totally helped me out and i smoked the second one. i don't know what others are talking about. she totally can rephrase and re-explain and is always available for help. a great prof.
Ridiculous! When the class average is a 70% on both tests its pretty obvious that its not the class but the teacher. Horrible! Bad teacher don't take it with connell!
this rating below me--- exactly what i was thinking. this class gives me nightmares
It's hard not to like her because she seems so genuine. Unfortunately, when the class average on the test was a D she didn't seem to attribute it to poor teaching (actually more of poor testing)and that was frustrating. She is super nice but needs to tone it down a bit...
Ok, first off, what would be the point if everyone already knew the material and got 100 percent on the test? Sometimes, courses are supposed to be challenging. She's fine as a teacher, she seems a little nervous up there though.
Wow... Umm this class was amazingly hard. I felt like no matter how hard I studied I managed not to do well on the tests. Her tests are very very difficult and when the class has a D average you would thing she would grade on a curve. Overall not a good class because of the tests. Good luck if you have this teacher!
Thank God for the extra credit assignment! I barely got an A in this class (93). I studied really hard for the tests, but she seemed to throw in some random, unclear questions. She is really nice, but her tests were all over the place. If you try hard enough, it is possible to do well in this class.
This class is my least favorite class so far. The tests are way too hard. At least she gives extra credit. Other than that, she is a hot teacher and is really nice and helpful.
This was a 101 class? It felt like we were expected to learn an memorize things that were way beyond basic introductory biology concepts. Attending the class is mandatory because she often offers extra credit only in class. Has nothing to do with her teaching, but she has a terribly annoying laugh.
She seems like she should be a kindergarten teacher. That could be good or bad depending on how you like to be treated. She is the easiest science teacher I have had so far. As long as you study and go to class you should be fine. The final is kinda hard because of the material covered. Labs are easy A's I got a B altogether.
her lectures are very clear and i believe she's good at teaching 101-- easy to understand. tests can be difficult if you don't review the study guide. i used the book maybe twice the whole quarter, so i wouldn't recommend buying it.
You would never guess this is a one hundred level course! She goes way beyond the introduction to biology! No matter how hard I studied I couldn't get above a b on the test!
The tests are harder then I expected them to be, but she offers allot of extra credit for coming to class which kind of makes up for it. She is really good at explaining concepts, or re-phrasing them in her lectures to help you understand. Overall, it way an O.K. course.
Connell is nice and tries to ensure students are following the material; she'll even address questions to the class, although sometimes it takes 5 miutes for 1 kid out of 200 to answer.
Connell is very enthusiastic about Bio, which makes this course pretty interesting. The book is no help, and Connell's lectures are pretty detailed, so unless you've got a friend who takes really good notes, I recommend going to class. Also, print out all the worksheets before lecture, it is a pain to copy them while she's lecturing. Lab is simple.
Best prof ever! Read the book, study hard and you'll do well. She is amazing at helping you and the clarity of her topics is crystal clear. Take her--- YOU WON'T REGRET IT!
So I like the prof but it seemed that her teaching style isnt what Im use to "more ready note then actually teaching" (and I dont think that having it a 8 am was to much fun) It hard to understand this class when the book doesnt really help (It all based on lectures) like the final I didnt read and I did the best out of the three test.
I'm currently taking the class.... all i have to say is what the hell is going on? Lectures are boring. She teaches like her students are elementary, and tests like they're bio majors. Study guides don't help, but extra credit is a plus...
Awesome teacher, really nice lady. But, like people have said.. her Bio 101 class is pretty tough for 100-level. Granted, I also shouldn't have thought I could really go every day for an 8am lecture class that's 50 minutes long. If you can go to class every day and are interested in Biology, definitely take her.
Tests are ridiculous. She has insane questions in the first place and then throws the "A and B" "only C" type questions at you where you cant even have an educated guess. Way to difficult. I seriously feel like I am in the wrong class when I sit down for exams. Not cool. Make some decent tests Connell. Please stop torturing your students.
She's condescending in lectures and her exams are based off of her lectures...textbook is a little useless.
Fun teacher; easy tests if you study regularly; attendance is mandatory since the exams are based solely off her lectures. She's pretty enthusiastic on the subject, which is nice at 8am in the morning. Again, a few minutes of studying every day will guarantee you a good grade (cramming does not work well).
This class was 'ish' I only took it for the GUR- which I assume most people are doing. 8am sucks, she's not super interesting, and tests are hard (if you aren't good at bio!) but she offers lots of extra credit opportunities. Lab isn't too bad either. Don't both buying the textbook though, it's useless
This is possibly the WORST class i've ever taken at western...She puts her powerpoints online, but doesn't explain the material to students well enought to actually make sense! I just took the first test, studied 8 hours, and only got a 71%!!! She doesn't put the information needed on the powerpoints! And the book is of no use! HARD 101 CLASS!!
DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK. This is a decent class. If you go every day, you will understand the material. Look over the powerpoints to study. You need to study a lot and understand everything really well, so get help. It is a difficult class to get the grade, but if you apply yourself you will do well, but you won't get an A unless you are exceptional
Anyone saying that this was a hard class or that Georgianne was unclear was honestly just lazy and trying to skate by class. She's great, cheerful, friendly, and really tries to make things clear. If you want to get a good grade, *shock* you actually have to come to class, take notes, and study them. So don't be worried by other's comments! :0)
She's tough but a good teacher. If you're having trouble, she's very willing to give outside help. I got A's on all the tests but i studied like mad. It was a bit much for a 101 class but that was fine with me since i'm interested in biology. make sure to do well in lab and do all the extra credit, it will be a big help to your final grade.
Seriously, if you had a hard time in this class and thought the tests were too hard, it might be time for you to drop out of college and do something that doesn't requiring thinking. If you had no intention of coming to class or reading the book than why the hell are you in college? If you're just there for the diploma, go print one off at Kinkos
I loved this class. She makes it really easy for you to get a good grade. 100 points from lab, and 100 from online quizzes so half your points are really easy. The class is interesting and she is a really nice lady. Not a bad GUR AT ALL!! I would take another class from her.
Connell is a really awesome teacher, mostly because she's so enthusiastic about the subject! I was a business major before, now I'm highly considering Bio. Expect to GO to class, read the book (it helps with quizzes!). tests can be kinda hard for a 101 class but she provides all lecture slides, detailed study guides, and study groups. lab is EASY.
She is a very straight forward teacher that tells you what is on the test and gives you a great study guide for every test
Dear god I thought I was done with boring science classes! The lab section is great, I got a 98%, but the lecture is useless and her tests are really random. She is a nice teacher, very into the environment, but if you are looking for something more hands-on like me, find another class to fill a GUR!
Georgianne is a great teacher! i failed biology previously and she makes everything so clear. I rarely go to lectures but make sure you read all the textbook and you will do great. I understand everything in this class and it's not a ton of work, would highly recommend her it's a great class!
this is one of the best teachers i've ever had. i always thought i was bad at science but she made everything so clear and made me feel like i could learn and be successful. quizzes/tests aren't hard as long as you go to class and read the book. i would HIGHLY recommend taking her class. wonderful wonderful person.
bio itself is a complex subject but connell is really helpful! her powerpoints are also EXTREMELY helpful. she does a really good job elaborating. she answers questions very clearly and makes sure that you understand before moving on. she's really nice and is extremely approachable.
Great teacher for this subject. She's passionate about climate change and health science. So, her biology class leans toward those subjects. It's a great way to do BIO 101 if you're interested in those subjects. She is very hot too.
Helpful. Admits when she doesn't know something, which is important. Unfortunately, it happens more often than it probably should. Due to work (and occasional oversleeping) I missed the lecture quite frequently, and I never bought the book. She explains well enough that the book isn't entirely needed. Didn't do well, but I'd do it again.
She talks a little to fast. Her class notes are what the tests would be made up of. However her tests are extremely hard and they are TRICKY. She says they are conceptual--but it seems more like shes doing a play on words so that you second guess yourself. Textbook is of little use. She wants u to be tested on what she says in class.
Wow Georgianne ruined biology for me... Her lectures were extremely biased and scattered, i really wanted to learn about biology but all i got to learn about was how the human race sucks. Western needs to find someone else to teach this class--her tests are awful and irrelevant. She thinks her opinions are facts and now i dislike bio. DON'T DO IT!!
Her tests are very hard.. On one of the tests, the class average was a D+ without the curb (and her curb is so small, that it hardly effects your grade, after the curb, the class avg was a C-!) You know its not the class at that point, its the professor! I loved bio in HS! I attended everyday and took pages of notes, and studied! very hard class.
Don't take her. Plain and simple. It's all complicated power points, HARD exams, and a lot of textbook reading. Avoid her! She doesn't teach it like a 101 class, she teaches it as if you are already a pro at biology. I would take Geology or Physics over her any day!
Material was not always easy to understand just through lectures, but the textbook proved to be very helpful. Tests were moderately difficult, but you should do fine if you study.
Weird lectures and in a room with 400 other students. I liked biology but she kinda ruined it for me. Her lectures are easy but her study guides are extremely hard to navigate and see what was needed to study for the test. The exams here hard. 50 multiple choice questions.
Pr. Connell is very helpful if you take the initiative to get to know her, which can be helpful in such a large class (about 200). # multiple choice exams make up 75% of your grade and lab is the other 25%. Lab is easy, exams are a bit harder. Pay attention to the diagrams she draws, used these a lot on the exams. Book reading is definitely a must.
Prof. Connell was very enthusiastic about her subject, and she made me enjoy getting up for a 8am class to learn about biology. Her tests can be a little hard, but they test to see if you really understand the subject. Always willing to clarify and answer questions.
After the first class, I thought she was going to be ridiculous and extremely hard, but she wasn't. She explains things really well, better then the book so it's important to go to class. The tests aren't that hard if you take good notes. Plus she gives out extra credit questions in class that help. Overall, I thought she was a great professor.
AMAZING!!!!!!!! willing to help- she understands it's a difficult class- go to class- lots of extra credit- lab is easy- she is sooooo nice :) obviously loves what's shes doing!
Shes really nice and means well, but she is really scatterbrained! She helps create the lab manual for Bio 101 and we don't even follow it numerically. For example we started on Lab 1, then went onto 6, then 4, then 3, then 7, now I think we might be starting 2. If you get frustrated with unorganized people dont take lab from her!
Do not take this professor unless you already have an extensive background in Bio. She assumes that everyone already knows alot about bio, so she leaves the majority of the class behind because they dont know what she is talking about. Her exams are extremely difficult and are basically just a play on words the entire time.
Bio 101 is a very challenging class! If your looking for a easy GUR, look somewhere else. There is alot of material she covers in such a short period. Test are pretty hard! You can't just memorize the stuff. You have to apply yourself. But she is a very nice professor.
This quarter she has revised her teaching method. Rather than standard lectures and homework assignments, she expects everyone to study on their own, then take quizzes and do GROUP-based assignments in class before she has even taught any of the subject. I love science and biology, and she seems very knowledgeable but this new method is terrible.
Pretty much weekly you have quizzes that are 10 questions and are super easy if you do the reading or go to one of the scheduled study groups with the TA. The class is kind of taught backwards though, in that you take these quizzes at the beginning of each section rather than at the end. The only test is the final. She's helpful & clear in lecture.
The class was taught backwards--she assigned reading, quizzed us, then lecturd on that topic. The TA study sessions saved me! I got an A in the class without enduring crazy amounts of stress. The class average for final grades was an 82%...so not that bad!
This class is ridiculously easy the way she teaches it- the class is centered around a group dynamic, so attendance is absolutely necessary. Her TA does most of the teaching and tutoring but Georgianne is always helpful when you ask her specifically. GO TO THE STUDY SESSIONS, it helps (since the lecture is mostly just groupwork).
She's enthusiastic so that's really good, she doesn't give really any instruction in class so you need to read the textbook or go to the study session where her TA basically teaches you everything you need to know
Pretty good for such a big lecture class. She makes biology pretty clear. I would recommend this class for anyone who needs a LSCI GUR.
Although she wasn't the nicest person when addressing individual questions, she is excellent at making points clear. I understood every topic she discussed and she always has an example for further clarity. As long as you know the key terms in each chapter you'll do well on the quizzes/tests.
The class is set up a little different. Every day is group work and mini-lectures. You take tests before you go over things in class, so you need to do the readings. The group work is easy, its surprising how much you learn. The tests aresy if you go over the worksheets and study-guides. Overall class wasn't bad for being at 8am.
I am not a huge fan of how she has this class set up, but it may be helpful for some. The class is split up into groups of 5 and you do group worksheets together, but with little explanation from the teacher, the work is pretty difficult and if at least one person in your group doesn't know what they're doing, it can be very hard to understand.
She's great I thought. She was helpful and thorough. Her class wasn't too hard and was a friendly and smart person
Excellent prof. love her teaching methods and her enthusiasm for the material
Tough course, but a good professor. Her lectures are helpful & straightforward. Make sure you attend class, do the readings & study though because her exams are pretty tough!
Nice, passionate, helpful. She loves her work and it shows. The only problem with the class is the teaching model; the RAP system quizzes you on the material before you learn it in class, which forces you to do the readings. This might be okay for an upper-level course, but it's a bit too intense for a GUR. Connell herself is okay though.
She's a enthusiastic teacher, the only problem is she doesn't get it when her students don't understand. She quizzes you before she teaches information in class. I didn't learn anything from her, I learned by going to the study sessions. According to her, the class midterm average was low because obviously we didn't study enough.
The format of this class is terrible. It's group based, and so you don't necessarily have control over your grade. She does "mini-lectures" after you've been quizzed/graded on things, and most of class time is spent on taking quizzes or doing group assignments that should really be HW given after a lecture. Easy if you have any background in bio.
This class is a tough GUR. The format is group work and it doesn't leave much wiggle room. She lectures on material after quizing you about it. She makes you responsible for other people's learning which is annoying. I would say don't take this unless you HAVE to.
I thought she was great
This was by far my easiest class. I was surprised I had to take such a low level class for my major but I had no problems with the class. While there is group work, her lectures were actually fun.Labs are taught by A T.A who is also very knowledgeable about the subject.
This class was really tough for a GUR. She taught really well in her lectures but I didn't like the setup of the class. Basically, you have to go to get credit for activities with your group, but she teaches the material after the quizzes. It doesn't make sense to me. I learned a lot more from study groups and the TA study sessions.
Very straight forward, she sticks to the syllabus and you always know when you have quizzes and tests. Quiz questions come straight from study guides, which you can compile to make a test study guide. If you attend class and do about an hour of studying per every class period, you'll do fine.
Group based work which can be a pain. She is exceptionally bright and is very helpful if needed. I enjoyed this class.
I really enjoyed Connell's class. Her teaching style is a little backwards at first but as long as you have a good group that discusses things so everyone understands you should be fine. Make friends with your group is all I can say.
3 words: DO NOT RECOMMEND!! Her lectures are awful and are mostly given before you come to class(Through unclear youtube videos) and you're quizzed on how well you listened and took notes on the video lecture. Only after you take the quiz does she actually give you real information and she seems like she's only there for research, not teaching. UGH
TERRIBLE class. The work load is ridiculous for a GUR, let alone a first-year interest group. Connell is inept at explaining concepts, creates assignments that only vaguely relate to the important topics, and puts the most vague material in the exams, things we went over maybe once. I honestly feel like Connell wants students to fail.
I would highly recommend Connell! I took bio 101 before with Singh-Cundy and HATED it. Connell's class has basically mandatory attendence and a pretty heavy (but easy) workload (lots of grade boosting assignments). Sing-Cundy's class is graded on tests only. Don't take if you don't want to go to class, but I received an A- with Connell.
Really enjoyed this class. There was a lot of work, yes, but it was all interesting and relevant. I liked the way the course was structured, with a lot of it online. I could work at my own pace. As long as you stay on top of the homework, the exams are no problem. Plus she's a sweetheart!
Loved this class! As long as you show up to class and turn your homework in on time you will get a good grade. Her tests are hard but her teaching methods are fantastic.
Easy class. Interesting if you like bio. 101 is super basic. EASY lab
Not recommended for non-Biology majors. The lab may be easy, but the lecture covers a LOT of material and exams will require long hours studying for your textbook. Connell's lectures/powerpoints don't give much information you can take notes on, leaving you without very much to study from other than the textbook itself. Not worth it for a GUR.
This class is a total time-hog, you will squander hours & hours working on the study guides, watching the online videos, etc. It's not challenging at all, just time consuming. Connell is a marginal prof at best, not terrible but far from great.
Connell has done an amazing job reforming the way students learn in large classes. I took the reformed version and earned an A, without studying for exams or squandering for hours completing work. She's an animated and passionate professor of biology and really teaches. No text book, homework in class, outstanding understanding of the content.
Great class! Take notes and make sure to do the study guides, they really help. Group quizzes are easy but her tests are challenging.
THIS CLASS IS CHALLENGING! It takes up a lot of time and it's only worth 4 credits, it should be 5. There's a lot of time used out of class on homework, usually about 3 hours worth or more a week. The tests are the most challenging but I like that we do a lot of group work so that the grade is more manageable to get.
This class was way too much work for a 101 class. She asks too much of her students. Tests are more difficult than they should be. Her instructions are not very clear with regard to her study guides. Labs were fairly easy.
Great class!! What we get to do in class is definitely worth all the lectures out of class. She's funny, and REALLY passionate about teaching and helping students learn better. Loved her!
Best professor I've ever had. Would take her again and again. There is a lot of work, but it is all for you to understand the material. She is AMAZING
Poor layout of class and goes too in-depth for a 101. Her online lectures are also don't help, barely covers the material which is on the exams.
There were 187 kids in my bio class, but the professor manages it really well. Lectures are online videos; about 1.5 hours of online notes per 2 weeks. The tests are a little tough and don't completely correlate with what you learn from lectures, but if you do good notes your grade will be good anyway.
Connell is a great professor. She really knows her stuff, is enthusiastic about the material, and is engaging in her lectures. The format of the class is really annoying though, as there are unnecessary study guides and lots of group work. Tests are very comprehensive and require studying. Sometimes the way she explains things is really confusing.
Get ready to work. I agree with everyone about how this should be a 5 credit course. I spent the majority of my time studying for biology. That being said, I really enjoyed the subject. Her tests are hard. The first one was insane, but I think they get better.
Connell is a great teacher and she has a great curriculum. There is a lot of group work, but that makes the class go by faster. She has her lectures online which is kind of nice. Make sure to go to class because the in class assignments are most of your grade. You could probably do pretty bad on the tests and still manage a B if you go every day
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! DO NOT RECOMMEND! The work load is way too much and way too hard for a 101 class. Instead of actually teaching she makes you watch videos on her lecturing outside of class! There are so many assignments and it gets kinda confusing. Stupid class. Should be a 6 credit class. Wouldn't take unless its ur major.
Bad teacher, stupidly easy class. All of her lectures are online, and they're laid out in such a way that what she's talking about usually isn't related to what you want to know. Huge emphasis on group work, tests are taken with your group so the entire class is an easy A. Plodding your way through the busywork, however, is painful.
Her lectures are also online so its easy to refresh your memory on the units before the exams.
Probably the best professor I've had thus far at WWU. Connell is very enthusiastic about biology, and it shows in how she runs her classes. She also cares about her students. My course was an experimental set-up (groups of 5), which worked well for studying for exams and such. Always willing to help if needed. Take her class - you'll like it!
All lectures are online, which are long and boring and hard to make yourself sit down and watch. In class, all you do is worksheets as a group. There are 6 tests, all worth only 10 questions, and you do them again as a group after you do it alone. Group work saved my grade, but I don't feel like I learned much. Lab is easy and fun.
Honestly if you do not have to take this class for a major, don't. Hands down the worst teacher I have ever had. She does not even teach anything all of her lectures are online. When asking for help she tells you "you have a phone with google on it". Extremely rude and not helpful when asked questions, she dismisses almost everything students say.
Currently I am in the Bio 101 class and for a 4 credit lab sci GUR this class is A LOT of work. Very very detailed. She requires no purchase of an expensive text book but in return she posts online lectures. Which in my case I do not like these long and complicated online lectures. I wouldn't take this class if I was given money to.
The class is set up a bit different than most at WWU. She posts her lectures for the unit online instead of lecturing in class and you must do it before class. They are long and boring but very informational. Take good notes for the module tests and use your activities for the Unit Quizzes. Its a big class so if you need help, ask.
Even though this was an introductory class, it was one of the hardest ones I've ever taken. What's on her study guides aren't what's on her tests. What IS on her tests are the things that she talked about maybe for like a second. She doesn't lecture during class, and it's all group work. The final was cumulative and wasn't on what she said it was.
Lot's of 'busy' work. Prepare for videotaped lectures, required DB posts, group tests, quizzes, & activities. Tests were hard to ace, as there was always at least one random question on material she didn't cover. 6 tests & a cumulative final. Lab section was the highlight, otherwise kind of an annoying course. OK if you're seeking an 'easy-A' GUR.
Terrible class if you don't like learning from online lectures. She doesn't teach at all in class and just has you watch videos of her lecturing on canvas. I'd rather be learning from a real lecture.
Great class for non-science majors - she takes it (almost too) slow, and really seems to want you to pass. if you pay attention and watch the video lectures, there's no reason that you shouldnt be able to pull a B or higher
She keeps the class so interesting with lectures, videos and hands on ways to shake it up. I loved her class so much, and would take it again! She believes in often test taking with low stakes, so your grade is not reliant ALL on two tests. You also get to make up points on tests with your group. She is very understanding and sweet.
Lectures are taught online, which would be fine if I had signed up for an online class. But I didnt. Online lectures are boring, scattered, and fells like she talks to you as if you're a child. I basically had to relearn all the material through the internet, especially as the tests are tricky. In-class time is busy work and group activities.
Material was easy enough, however when it came time to test I found myself crazy unprepared. She gives study guides and worksheets in class but unless you are actively looking over material everyday, you may have a tough time.
This class was very good. Georgianne is very smart, nice, and helpful.
Georgianne is very nice and helpful. She's helped me with topics multiple times in her office and it really helped me out. attending class everyday is essential to passing because you get participation points for completing the in class assignments. No textbook. The lab section is super easy. Tests can be tough but do able if u study.
Georgianne is a good prof, but when you try to get help in office hours she doesn't really answer your questions. I liked the way the class was set up, where you watch the lectures on youtube at home and group work in class. The exams are cake, and you are able to earn points back for every one with the group exams. She gives study guides also.
Georgianne is definitely passionate about biology, but that's kinda all she's got. Tests were super unpredictable even with the study guide. I aced the first test and bombed the second. Lectures online was fine except she didn't clarify a lot of things in her "clarification lecture." My whole group was confused half the time. Not a fan of her.
Worst professor/teacher ever. I mean it when I say it, niceness makes no claim to how badly organized, detached and jam-packed this class is. Struggling to pass and she is oblivious to all other than her own science interests. Lectures were recorded 4 years ago and she expects you to gather all info from her rambling videos.
This class is very well put together for one specific type of learner - and I am not that type. Lectures are videos outside of class. In class time is spent doing worksheets in groups. The tests make me think there is some textbook I was not given because half of it does not relate to the three year old lecture videos we are required to watch.
Honestly one of the worst professors I've had. She's really nice, but I could care less about half of the thins she says. Half of it isn't even applicable. She assigns online lectures which are a complete waste of time, the tests are unnecessarily hard, and the group work is ridiculous. Would not recommend. Plus lab is pointless. Waste of time.
Her 30 min online videos produced in 2007 are the only things teaching us. She gives us worksheets to do in class which loosely pertain to our actual studies and then tests us on things that were not a part of the worksheets or the online videos. Our lab prof explained things better than she ever did. Expect to teach yourself biology, good luck.
This class sucked. I hate bio and was taking this as a GUR also the structure of the class was very insufficient in my opinion. The online lectures were a joke and since there is no textbook that is the only source of information. And if you don't watch the long/boring online lectures, the in class activities will make no sense. Lab grade saved me
If you work well with her teaching style, this is a great class. Many people dislike the online lectures, but I found them great because we didn't need a textbook. Good class IMO.
I've taken AP Biology before and would say that I understand it well. She does not know how to teach very well. She will go over the concepts, but fails to actually help students connect all the dots. She is a good teacher, but her methods of teaching and the topics are lacking. Not to mention the videos she recommends do not help, get the textbook
I hated her class at first, but grew to love it by the end of the quarter. She has a different way of teaching which is probably not the best for a 101 class, but her method of teaching is basically set up to how you should learn material in college. She has you learn the material first and then discusses it in class. You work in groups which helps
If you think Georgianna was a bad teacher you probably weren't a good student. By no means am I a "science" person but Georgianne was inspirational, kind, and incredibly approachable. For how huge of a lecture this was, and how many students she has, it was a wonderfully structured class and she was always available to help.
Was not a fan of the way Georgianne had her lectures, but if you watch the lectures (although its often times hard to sit at a computer for that long), take notes, and go to class you will easily pass the class.
Bio 101 was by far my favorite class this quarter and it was all thanks to Georgianne. She makes lectures interesting and is always respectful when students ask questions. The tests relate directly to what's being taught and she makes sure you are prepared and really know the material. She is also very approachable.
Really clear way of explaining concepts, in-class work directly related to exams
She clearly loves biology, but doesn't seem to understand that we are all just here for credit. She approaches the material as if we're small children oblivious to the world. All of the material is learned outside of class via online videos. The class setup is strange & catered towards a specific learning type. I wish I could've dropped this class.
Professor Connell is one of the sweetest, most understanding professors I've ever had. She grades assignments quickly and promptly posts them to canvas. Also, she makes learning basic bio relatively interesting and captivating. She answers any questions very well, showing her knowledge on this subject. I would recommend her to anyone!
Can't say I was a huge fan. Attendance is mandatory and she assigns the groups that you'll be working with in both lab and lecture. The lectures themselves were alright but I'm just personally not a big biology fan. Some tests were harder than others and the weekly module quizzes were fairly easy. Just go to class and complete the study guides.
Class is two days a week with a lecture done by Georgianne, and then a lab section one day a week usually done by a grad student. Georgianne is very clear in her lectures but she doesn't cover everything on the tests, you'll have to read the text book if you don't have a strong background in biology. I took Ap Bio and this class is pretty similar.
This class had a unique set up for a lecture of nearly 400 people. I was not a fan of her teaching style at all. I went to her office hours once and she was not helpful in answering my questions. She was deaf to my concerns as a student. Georgianne is nice, but I am glad this class is over. I would not recommend her.
Georgianne is so caring and knowledgeable on the subject. We were organized into groups of 5 (-/+) She did do a lot of "hand holding" and some of the content was honestly super random and I felt like I had to "just get by". I rarely used the textbook, just bio clips she made were most helpful for test content. Not a ton of HW. Not the worst/best.
Georgianne definitely wasn't one of my favorite professors, but she was alright and got the job done. I liked her better during office hours, she was very sweet and helpful.
If you can avoid taking this class, do. Georgianne seems like a nice person, but her class is really confusing and strangely tough for a 101 course. I didnt buy the textbook and its expensive so don't buy it. The lab was okay, but lecture was a mess. You do need both coursepacks, and she puts you into groups for the whole class. Do not recommend.
Connell does a great job at explaining the material. Not a lot of homework. You work in groups all quarter so when you take the exams, you do it individually and then as a group. Whatever you get right on the group test, goes towards extra credit for the questions you missed on your individual test.
I really enjoyed bio 101 with Georgianne. I thought she was a great professor, and the class is pretty easy to get an A or B in. The first week I was confused on her teaching style, but you get the hang of it quickly. Lots of (easy) in class points. Definitely take this class with her if possible!
Even though the reading is heavy, she explains a lot of stuff in class, also has videos and an activity book that is very helpful in the class. she is nice most of the time ive talked to her and if you show up to almost all classes you get to do a group test that can get you up to 6 points back on your quiz. very beneficial to show up.
Professor Connell was difficult to get the hang of at first. She has a very unique teaching style that is very structured. She always used big vocabulary and expected us to know certain things even though it is an intro course. The textbook was difficult to read and tests had many trick questions. Hated the format of the tests so much.
Connells lecture class is pretty easy. She put us in to groups at the beginning of the quarter and you do all of the class work and tests with them. Exams are pretty easy and you can make up point with your group. However the Lab is not easy and its pretty hard to get full points on the lab work.
Be prepared to teach yourself most of the material. Read the test book and watch videos on youtube and you should pass. Connell only teaches about a tenth of what you need for tests in class and expects you to learn the rest. The lab is NOT related to the rest of the class and the tests are very confusing.
I came into bio with no previous experience, but Prof. Connell made it easy and really interesting. It's best to do readings and watch bioclips before class otherwise the lecture is hard to follow. Make sure you go to class - lectures were full of info and activities that were helpful for the tests. You can find Quizlets online for most exams
This class is not hard. I have no background in Biology, I never read the textbook, and I got an A. You just need to watch the bioclips at home and pay close attention to Connell's lectures. She gives you everything you need, and she's very passionate about the material. I actually ended up really liking the subject matter because of her lectures.
If you want to pass Georgianne's class, get ready to participate. She's very passionate and she's VERY smart. I've found myself curious about other topics in Biology outside of the class in which I contacted her about, and I always received a knowledgable answer. Great professor, ask lots of questions and you'll do fine.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS AT 8:30!!! Otherwise, class isn't too bad. Just stay on top of things. Also, DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK! I only used the bioclips she makes and kinda paid attention in class and still passed! She's really nice! Oh yeah you're partially graded on attendance so that's lame but you're put into groups so you can suffer together!
In terms of personality, shes great. Cares about her students and is very approachable and friendly. Shes super knowledgeable as well. The only thing is her lectures are kind of random and all over the place with no clear pattern so sometimes its kind of hard to follow along but not too bad.
Georgianne is a sweetie!! I love her and her class, and I suck at science. She makes everything really easy and really sets her students up for success. Her bioclips are dorky but its endearing, and although the subject matter is a little boring if you took high school biology, she is genuinely knowledgeable and makes it more interesting.
Honestly, Connell's Bio101 class is made for you to pass. If you do your work and show up to lab there's no reason for you not to do well. She gives you a lot of grade padding, so if you really bomb a test you're still probably going to be fine.
I think Georgianne is great! She clearly wants everyone to succeed and I think she makes the class very do-able. The format of the class is based on a lot of group discussion and minimal outside work. There is a textbook but I've touched it maybe twice? 3 exams with the possibility to earn points back, and 6 online quizzes with 2 attempts
The entire class is based on the activity book. I didn't use the textbook at all. The only reason you might need to is if you're struggling with a topic, or you use it for module quizzes. There are 3 exams. Final is just a regular exam. You're placed in groups that you don't get to pick for the entire quarter.
Do these things if science was hard for you in high school: Buy the book; I don't care what the other reviews say, the book has quiz answers and the quizzes will help your grade big time The tests are hard; go to study sessions Attend all classes; activities are easy points, so are DBs Do these things and receive a B, unless you're good at science.
Georgianne definitely makes this class doable if you're not into science. I do feel like there's too much busy work for it to only be worth 4 credits, but that's kinda like most 101 classes. If you just show up to class/lab and do the work you'll do fine, your grade is based on 3 tests, some quizzes, the lab, and participation. A lot of group work
I love Georgianne as a person. However, the tests are WAY harder than what she goes over in class and the study guides don't help. The lab is AMAZING, fun, and simple. Online quizzes are tough sometimes but manageable and ONLINE! :) I don't think she curves tests, she should though my whole group got around 60% on the first two.
Georgianne is so sweet and you can really tell she genuinely cares about the things she is teaching, which is always great in an introductory class! The course is quite simple, but the organization can seem odd, so you just have to stick with it for a bit. If you go to the review sessions the day before tests they will be so much easier!
Georgianne is very dedicated to the biology field and it shows! You work in assigned groups that you are with for the entire quarter which can be good or bad depending on the people. Definitely study from the activities and use the book as supporting material, not from the just the book. Go to the review sessions and ask Georgianne if you need help
Connell is nice and uses lots of teaching styles to teach concepts, mainly the activity packet. However, for a GUR it felt like it had too much busy-work, especially the textbook (I don't know if I'd recommend it). Prepare for lots of group work in this class and relying on the activity packet for studying. But it's an easy GUR if you participate
Passionate about what she teaches. Does not run a 200+ person class effectively - lots of group work. Hard to know what will be on the test, since a lot of the "learning" is done by peers (not everyone knows what they're doing so idk how much learning is really getting done). Do not recommend if you like straightforward lectures and exams.
This class is painfully easy, you are assigned a seat & a group during lecture, you essentially do work book activities. There is a chance to get 6 extra points on each exam, just study the work book & know the vocab and you'll get an A. If you need an easy lab science a highly recommend this, it's exactly what you learned in high school biology.
Georgianne makes learning biology fun. She is passionate and knowledgeable. I did not want to take bio 101, but after I did, I'm glad it was with Georgianne. She is a fair grader and truly wants her students to learn. If you are struggling, she is always available to help you better understand the material.
Georgianne is a very sweet professor who does a good job teaching biology in a way that doesn't make it too complicated (most of the time). Not too hard of a class if you show up and ask questions!
Lecture pace is super slow, you sit in assigned groups all quarter and do work together. Tests aren't super hard and you get to do a group test for extra credit if you don't skip class. The textbook isn't necessary, you can use the course reserves or just the internet to do the online quizzes she assigns. Takes attendance through turning things in.
Georgianne is very kind but I felt like we were expected to know everything before each lecture. I thought the class very difficult and I had a hard time keeping up. I studied before each exam but still barely passed. Working in groups wasn't helpful since no one in my group knew what was going on. Online assignments and the lab are very easy.
Georgianne is a great professor, she is clearly very excited about the material which is rare for entry-level professors. She takes interest in her students and is open to shifting the class to talk about what students are interested in. Class was fairly easy as long as you show up for class and pay attention. There is a good bit of group work.
Professor Connell is amazing. I am actually very surprised she has this low of a grade on here. I took her this semester. (During COVID-19) and she had everything very organized and structured very well. She made videos every week and included detailed expectations and how to achieve success in her class. She deserves a 5 out of 5.
She is so nice and her stuff is extremely organized and clear of what she expects. She walks you through almost every assignment in video lectures, or you do that in your lab zoom. If you do slight studying, and just turn all assignments in you can easily get a good grade. She is very helpful if you need extra help as well. Her lectures make sense.
Although there wasn't much contact because her classes are large, she is a sweet professor who enjoys what she does and tries to make it as understandable for everyone else as possible.
In zoom university you'll never meet Connell but her lectures are full of joy and she seems just happy to be talking about the subject matter. You are given a clear layout of when things are due and how to stay on top of it so follow it and you'll get an easy A. Only complaint is that the communication between Connell and her TA's is not the best.
A little busywork, but overall online classes were super easy and as long as you show up to the synchronous meetings you will be fine. Easy weekly quizzes and the "busywork" helps your grade to be mostly based on your time and effort rather than actual knowledge, which can be good or bad depending on how you roll.
BIO 101 is a very heavy workload class, especially for it only being 4 credits. I don't think that they have the virtual format completely down as far as the lab component goes because the mandatory, once a week zoom sessions are a complete waste of time. The labs are kind of difficult but the rest of the work is easy, but time consuming.
She is a really good professor! She handled COVID really well. You have 1 zoom meeting a week and thats when you work on lab. The Lecture part of the class is asynchronous and you have to turn in around 6 assignments each week. There is a quiz that is due almost every Friday but they are only 1o questions and you can use your notes!
Horrible class. Taught only by TA's who don't know what they are doing. Lectures are nonengaging and boring. Zero connections with the actual material and a ton of work. Ridiculous class.
Good person, awful class. Super heavy workload. It's not necessarily hard, but very time consuming. TA's did most of the work and were super unhelpful most of the time. Lab sections were unclear and everyone was lost. Long, pointless lectures. I had to do lots of outside reading to try and understand what was being taught. Professor was nice though
A very nice and caring prof. You are only required to go to a couple of lectures and they are very laid back. She doesn't make you feel dumb like a lot of professors do when you miss a question. Most quiz questions were easy although some were actually pretty difficult. There is a weekly discussion post which is easy points. Overall a good class.
Ms. Connell is a great professor and she has her canvas page for bio 101 very organized and theres no surprises and you always know whats coming up. Also she is pretty good about putting grades in pretty quick. Great professor and cares about her students. The work load is a lot but as long as you do it and understand it or get help itll be okay.
She wasn't very present in this class, but the class overall (including the lab) is pretty easy but the course materials are pretty expensive ($80 for the online textbook, and about $50 for lab materials). Pretty easy for a lab GUR.
The professor herself was very helpful when visiting the classroom but her TA is the one who teaches in person. The TA was horrible at making sure everyone understood the curriculum and everything was assigned rather than taught. I studied for every test but could never get a high grade because I all in all learned little/nothing from this class.
Professor Connell seems really passionate about her class and material. It is a larger class so there is not much 1 on 1 with her. Taking this class is like taking two classes. The lab is quite a bit of work on top of the 2 quizzes each week in class, the lectures, the notes, the course pack, and the textbook readings.
The content of this class is easy but there is lots and lots of work to accompany it. Professor Connell is super kind and her expectations of you are clear from the get-go.
You're set for the exams if you pay attention to what she emphasizes in the lectures. DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS! The tests also have material on the virtual activities, so pay attention and don't just do them for credit. Go to class; the lectures are 90% of the material you need to know. Class is fun, and I recommend it.
Took BIO 101 as a general university requirement. I hated it, the lectures are incredibly boring however this was also not a subject I even remotely cared about. Attendance is not mandatory however if you are constantly skipping and do not study the material you will fail the exams.
Georgianne is one of the most helpful biology teachers here at western. Responded to my emails by the next day when I needed help. Even after passing the class she has been helping me figure out classes :)))
She is very kind and passionate. You basically teach yourself everything from the readings & class-time is a small review of that content. This style of teaching doesn't work for me but some will love it. The lab portion of the class is a lot of busy work but I found it more interesting than the regular class, but the lab is held by a TA.
I hate biology but I actually enjoyed this class. Shes clear, explains things well, and walks you through everything. The labs are relatively easy if your group actually does their work. The first couple weeks were rough for me but I got the hang of it. Participation assignments are worth 2 points and she drops the 3 worst grades. Highly recommend
Great for a general bio/science credit. She was nice and there's not too much work outside of class. Three exams are worth most of the points. She gives points back to top three most missed questions on exams too. A bit confusing at times but that just goes for any bio class. I'd suggest her for others.
She is a great cool
I wouldn't take this if you want to sit in a long lecture. The lecture ends with participation points (2 points= participation) don't leave beforehand. There is no way to make up points. At the end of the quarter, you can drop the three lowest grades.
TAs aren't great at teaching, they don't grade fair. Lectures are long and tiring and with heavy exams, study guides aren't clear for the majority of the group. A lot of people say she is a great teacher, it is true she is nice but she is also confusing when she talks so the entire time you have to teach yourself biology and hope you pass.
Enjoyed the class. Professor was clearly enthusiastic to teach about biology. Made class easier to digest. Obvious expert on subject.
Professor Connell is one of the first profs I've met that actually cares about a 101 class. The lecture itself was fairly easy and you could use your notes on Exams. But what got me was how harsh the grad students who run labs graded. I would get like a 6.375/10 on a lab because they were so strict about a 101 lab. Overall, Connell is a great prof!
I highly recommend this class. The lectures were super interesting and Professor Connell used great real-world examples to explain complex concepts. I really recommend using the textbook videos to help you study. They summarize the textbook and make it really easy to understand. Professor Connell is very kind and helpful, so use her office hours!
One of the best science teacher I have ever had. She showed professionalism, respect, and concern for her students. There was a lot of homework and reading, be prepared (she wrote the textbook). We had tests every 1-2 weeks. HNRS 213 has 20 person class size!! Lab was interesting and fun, Georgianne took us on field trips. Would recommend.
She is good, the course work is laid out pretty clear and simple. It is lecture heavy, make sure to take notes on the assigned chapters. Course packs are life savers for exams. One thing is she is not that great at explaining things sometimes, it can get confusing fast and sometimes you have to teach yourself. But overall it was a good class.
It's a Bio 101 class. Most of us probably took basic level biology in high school. It's not a hard class. If you want to pass, literally all you have to do is show up and do the bare minimum on homework. Professor Connell is nice, though she kind of talks to everyone like they're 2nd graders. She is passionate about what she teaches.
This class was interesting and average difficulty for a GUR, albeit time consuming if you want to excel on the exams. You end up paying about $80 for necessary course materials that aren't advertised when registering for the class. Megan Moma was my lab instructor and she was amazing, I highly recommend her.
Because of the nature of Bio 101 you do not get to know Prof. Connell very well, so if you're looking to connect with a teacher this class might not be for you. She is very kind and it is easy to listen to her lectures, the class is easy to get a good grade in. Grades rely heavily on how you perform on tests and in the lab.
If you need BIO101, TAKE IT WITH GEORGIANNE!!! She is such a kind an easygoing professor that has put a lot of thought into the structure of her course. Group work for participation credit, pretty straight forward exams due to their being provided study guides. Textbook is required but its an ebook and SUPER interactive which helped a lot.
Very difficult grader. You can use notes for the exams, but even so, the exams are extremely difficult. Lectures are confusing as well. The exams are based on materials that are all over the place, and its difficult to know what you're about to be tested on. The grading is way too harsh for a 101 class. I got a B but I worked extremely hard.
Georgianne is really nice, she tries to make sure everyone understands, as well as you can in a large lecture hall. I hated the online simulation assignments because they weren't very intuitive and not always relevant. As someone who always takes notes in class, this class was a breeze because the exams are open note! Hated the lab, not her class.
Never really talked 1 on 1 but I went to every class and found if you went to lectures and filled up your course pack with notes tests were very easy (open note). I did have an issue with a TA marking me down for literally no reason and she was like whatever so that was kind of weird. She seemed nice tho and tried to make stuff relatable
I would highly recommend taking someone else. You are expected to study from lectures, a course pack, a lab manual, and a textbook. Your study guide for the test will ask you to find information in one of those four places. If you miss something from the lecture, or need a deeper understanding in something from the course pack, you have to dig
Tests were based on everything - lectures, reading, etc. So there was a lot of information to know. Lectures were highly interesting and I got the most from those. I'm not sure why students think a professor should make things easier for them -- not really her job. But I found her an excellent lecturer and I enjoyed the class and the labs.
Great professor for a big lecture hall class. She was great at answering questions or addressing common mistakes. Tests were open note, which made things pretty straightforward! Attending class is necessary to reinforce concepts and succeed on the tests.
She's an incredible lecturer and made the two hour class speed by. Tests are open note, as long as you take good notes you'll pass with ease. Attendance is a must, even though it's a minimal part of your grade. Missing a lecture means you miss on crucial notes. The only reason I didn't give a 5 is because the TA is difficult and gives no feedback.
Good prof, super nice and friendly. sometimes I was a bit confused. Has a lab and lecture manual that you must purchase, and a textbook. If you show up, take notes, and do your best to understand, you will be fine. Tests were open note and correlated with notes well. Lab is another story, but it also was fine. Good for an intro GUR class
Biology is a difficult course but if you put in the work there are plenty of resources provided that aid in your success if you want it. Georgianne is very passionate about her work. All around good.
Great professor. Exams are tough, but as long as you take good notes and pay attention during lectures you will do well. Labs are fun and tied to real life events. It's a hard class, especially for an intro course, but you will do fine as long as you attend class and get help if necessary.
For a large lecture, Georgianne makes a priority to help students with their work and offer participation points, etc. It got everyone around me involved. I loved the choice to work with others. She really cares about each student's success and honestly admits when questions were too hard/confusing, adjusting our grades. Positive energy every day.
I absolutely recommend Professor Connell's 101 class, especially if you're nervous about bio. Bio has always been hard for me, but I was able to understand the material in a way I haven't been able to with other teachers. She is extremely patient and kind, she's willing to work with the students on issues like rescheduling lectures or exams.
Professor Connell LOVES biology and it shows. As someone who doesn't care much for bio, she makes it as interesting as possible, the lectures are very clear, and she is very fast at responding when trying to reach her. The only real issue I experienced was the tests were difficult for a 101 class, but overall a very good experience.
Seems nice, class is easy I just don't enjoy biology. Show up and put decent effort and you'll do fine.
Great professor! She really cared about her students and their understanding of the course. She puts you in groups for the quarter and you can earn back test points through group tests. The only qualification to take the group test is showing up to at least half of the classes.
I love Connell! She makes 101 easy, and don't be afraid if you don't have a good background in biology. I love the work we do in class, and even though I usually hate group work, group work for this class is not bad at all! Tests are not super difficult and she provides study guides and extra credit! Labs are a pain though.
Loved her teaching style, you will work in groups and that can really make or break your experience with the class. However you can tell she really wants everyone to thrive in her class and is open about grading policies and has a very positive and calm attitude towards her students.
Long, boring lectures. Expects alot of outside of class reading. Tests are large and difficult.
Easy lecture, can sometimes get boring, but if your showing up to class and doing the work, then its a breeze. The exams are sometimes worded a little weird, but she'll usually correct it if someone mentions something.
Professor Connel is a very kind person. She was always nice and had a positive attitude in her lectures. There are 3 exams you take in this course and they are relatively hard if you don't show up consistently or read. The workload in the labs is hefty. Be aware of Thursday labs with TA Minh Phan, she is definitely a hard grader.
Not an easy A for a GUR, you have to do the work to understand the material to do well on exams. Anyone who says the exams were hard just didnt do the work. Lectures tend to drone on, but worth it overall.
Professor Connell makes all of the information engaging and relates it back to relevant topics in our lives. She gives her students plenty of ways to learn the material, and almost every session includes group work or discussions, creating ample opportunity to make friends. This was the first class I took in college, and it was an amazing start.
Georgianne does everything in her power to make Bio101 as easy as possible. Although exams are closed note, they are not difficult as long as you attended lectures. She posts every resource you could think of to study from, and you get to take a group exam at the end that can raise your score up to 6 points (exam is out of 30). Would recommend.
Although there is a decent amount of reading required, the lectures are very interactive, which helps you stay focused and better understand the material being taught! I also really enjoyed how she organized the class, as well as the grading system used for exams (there's opportunities to make up points that you missed in your individual exams).
I'll start by saying I'm not a bio person but Connell really helped me a lot through office hours and generally being extremely supportive. She cares about her students and gives so many opportunities for success. This is not a class you can skip easily, there is a lot of test content on the tests which is the majority of your grade.
I took BIO 101 to cover a GUR, Professor Connell is engaging with students in the class. It's a little hard to sit through at 8:30 in the morning but the lectures are very informative. You have a couple readings a week and sometimes an online simulation.
Georgianne is an excellent professor. She is engaging & breaks down concepts to be as clear as possible. I hated biology in HS and she made it surprisingly bearable. She has the class organized well, & clearly cares about her students. It is important to attend class/look over the textbook readings, but I couldn't imagine a better intro bio class.
Gave good and interesting lectures that actually help you with both homework and exams. Lectures also included practice exam questions. On each exam you are able to take a "group test" after your regular test which gives your lecture group a few points back based on correct answers. I would definitely recommend taking from this prof.
Prof Connell is amazing. There are reading guides and simulations that don't take too long. She gives example exam questions on her slides so you know exactly what to expect on the actual exams. You take an individual exam then as a group and those points get added back to your individual score. Would take again!
I liked having Connell as a professor! She's super sweet and her lectures sometimes get boring but at 8:30 in the morning, she can make lectures interesting. She gives you groups to sit in and take group tests with. Tests aren't to hard, just make sure to study lecture materials for them. Overall I loved taking Connell's class!
Engaging, good content, made the material interesting and easy to understand. Would take this prof again.
Connell is a good prof, but if you don't like biology get ready to just take it on the chin because you have to pay attention. The material is not super hard to grasp but its super fast paced and there is quite a bit of reading you are expected to do before majority of classes. Attending lecture is important for participation points.
If you put in the effort for this class, you will do just fine.
Grades are 60% exams, 25% lab, 15% participation. If you struggle with task switching, I wouldn't recommend it as lectures bounce between numerous materials quickly. Can get some points back from the group tests after the individual exam. I was so lost in lecture but thanks to the Amoeba Sisters on youtube I somehow got an A+. Prof is kind/helpful
Georgianne is very kind and responds quickly to emails. Lots of reading, 60% of your grade is from 3 exams, unclear question wording, attend class or be very lost, study guides don't cover everything. But, e.c. chances on each exam, 4 assignments dropped + chance for remediation on 2, few assignments, not hard if you show up to class & do the work.
terrible at explaining the material. Will publicly humiliate/shame you if you show any sign of confusion. Weird wording on the exams, make it impossible to succeed even if you know the material. A condescending teacher. Answers to the reading guides she uses are not in the textbook most times. Terrible grouping system. Overall terrible teacher!
Super sweet but relies on students to explain to eachother too much. She is too focused on people being in groups it feels like she barely teaches. She does genuinely care and want everyone to succeed though.
Genuinely a caring professor. Class isn't difficult if you attend, pay attention, and read through the material. Reading isn't extremely heavy. Had a good experience with the course overall.
This class is so incredibly boring I don't know what to tell you. If I wanted to take environmental science, I would have but instead I'm in a bio class disguised as ES. The exams for the most part are very easy and you can get extra credit. I just thought this class was so incredibly boring.
Extra credit at the end of the quarter if you show up to most/all lectures. Can earn up to 6.25 points back on tests with your group. Very kind professor, answers questions clearly, and is always smiling! She makes it so easy to understand. There's reading guides so you actually learn from the readings because you won't just be mindlessly reading!
She is very nice and her lectures are pretty easy to follow. 3 exams in total that heavily affect your grade. She does have office hours if you ever need help clarifying concepts but you have to schedule an appointment to reach her. Weekly readings that are not too bad if you follow the guide. Just make sure to study for the exams.
Very kind and explained everything very well. When asked to repeat or re-explain stuff she tries to make it clearer and doesn't shame anyone for not understanding. She will make you talk to your group too much but other than that it was very interesting and I love her marine biology background!
I had a really good group. This class is SO streamlined. One of the best formatted large lecture/lab classes I've taken. Gives you the option to switch groups after every exam. Take notes along with her in class, go to all of the labs. Tests use individual + collaborative scores, so the exams are a breeze if you use the study guides. Great class!
Very fun professor with awesome labs!
Georgianne is a very passionate teacher, and that made the class so much more enjoyable. She cares about her students and makes sure the textbook is free, and is always open to questions in class. It's so important to do the readings, but the reading guides aren't required. The class is harder if you don't attend lectures!
The first professor I've taken who was able to turn a massive lecture class into something interactive and engaging. Bio101 & lab were very easy (coming from a humanities major), highly recommend for your lab creds.
Georgianne has this class mastered,it is very clear what is expected of you and how to be successful. The reading guides are helpful, but the lectures+PP are more useful. Pay attention to the example ABCD questions done in class, they are incredibly similar to the content on the exams. Also try your hardest to interact with your group! Loved class.
Really good teacher for lab science gurs, I had like 100 percent in lectures and 97 in the lab. Easy if you show up and do the work.
If this were an upper division class I would love her, but she lectures like the class already has a decent understanding of the topic. There are weekly readings that were definitely helpful but not enough for me to master the concepts enough for the tests
Majority of the class is on your own textbook reading. In class we just go over what we were supposed to have read in the textbook before coming to class. Tests are 60% weightage so if you do bad on them your grade is doomed. Also beware of tough lab TA graders.
Georgianne is awesome! Her lectures are super helpful and she is so willing to help any student with any questions. I highly recommend this class for a GUR requirement, just be prepared to go to class. It's really hard to make up for missed classes as most of your notes are taken in class.
Very sweet and kind. Struggled at the start of the quarter then I began going to her office hours for one on one tutoring. I went to the TA as well. I learned so much and improved drastically. The labs are very easy. If the class struggled with certain questions she would drop it. She gives out extra credit to improve our overall grade.
Class is always a lecture unless there is a test. She is a very sweet professor and genuinely cares about students passing her classes. She has time set aside every week to help students who are struggling in the class. She always looks happy to be teaching, and you can tell she really cares about biology and her students.
Has been teaching for decades and it shows. She is truly passionate about teaching. Thought I was going to be so bored--immediately proven wrong. Work sheets are engaging and informative. Its really hard to fall behind--your group supports you! Class energy was chill and positive. Highly recommend
Super fun class! group work was a bit tedious but Georgianne is super passionate about bio and really works to make sure the class understands the content. Read the reading guides and take notes during class, and you'll be perfectly fine. amazing teacher, would definitely take a class with her again!
Overall not a bad professor, I loved her in the Honors Bio 213. She did write the textbook which is online and all the class materials which was pricey, but everything we paid for was used. She can sometimes miss some things when explaining topics and always writes new test which can be difficult. But she does allow test revisions!
Georgianne is super sweet and does a great job of making the content interesting and engaging. There is a pretty hefty amount of reading she assigns as homework, but it's really helpful in understanding the content and she also provides study guides that make it clear what you're supposed to know. The lab was fun and easy as well.
Lovely professor. The assignments were easy to make up outside of class. If in Honors I encourage you to make friends in the class, it is very beneficial to connecting the topics. Tests are somewhat challenging as she wants you to create your own study guide. Review simulations before exams.
