easy class, write 4 page papers, easy marker
Good choice of literature, but treatment left something to be desired.
very nice, unpretentious, easy interpretations, kind of elementary style
gets off on tangents, hard to focus on his topics, literature okay, an ok marker
Cannot stop picking at his head!
great choice of literature, fair marker, interesting and thorough lectures
Very clear approach to works. Very friendly Easy marker Picks head, rubs chin
BORING!!!

stable, organized and intellectually stimulating
Little boring at times. Fair marker. Approchable and willing to help

i had him for first year english, and its one of the few courses that i remember
Head picker! and is really goofy though, often laughs at his own jokes when nobody else is laughing!decent marker! a bit boring sometimes!
Fair marker, tries to make the content interesting and really knows his stuff. Pretty funny professor, really open to differing interpretations and discussion.
I hate this man! He is so irritating - always picks at his head and chin, laughs at his own jokes that aren't funny, asks questions to the class, then proceeds to wait and wait and wait for someone to answer. Both the teacher and the class were useless.

WOW i have never fallen asleep in one class so many times. If it wasn't for him laughing at his own 'jokes' to awake me from a coma I'd still be sitting there in the front row passed out. Over all, he's an ok prof - I've had worse!
His voice is a little monotone but if you can get past that he's a really good teacher. His marking makes sense and he's very thorough with explanations. He knows what he's talking about.
So far Baillargeon is the best English Prof I have had at UVIC. Insightful, interesting, and intelligent.
Yes he does pick his head. The final exam was a ****. However, the rest of the marking in the course was not that bad. Maybe try a different prof if you can, but if you can't, don't worry too much, you'll survive.
He constantly scratched his head and rubbed his goatee, and answered his own questions since nobody else would. It was pretty annoying. Easy class though, didn't need to study much, and hardly any assignments....

Arrogant and annoying. And he has an extreme John Donne fetish.

he's nice and helpful, I found the classes interesting, but his voice was monotone... not too much work... pretty good class
I had Dr. Baillargeon last year for a 100 level course and liked him way better than this year. I didn't feel that he was fair in his marking. I think that he taught the course at a more advanced level than it should have been.
If you love English, get out, get out now. If you hate English you might enjoy not having to show up to class and watching the people who like English tear out their hair over his inacurate analysis of the material. marking fair except for final; WTF.
Screw him!
The guy is about the easiest marker on papers and other written assignments in the entire universe. I don't understand how anyone could have a problem with someone so inherently harmless. If you have two thoughts to rub together, you'll do fine.
You gotta love how he laughs at his own jokes - "and then he snaps... and he dies... hahahaahhaahha"
Not a bad teacher at all! Explains things clearly. One suggestion though: Stop touching your head over and over again...it's annoying!
This guy blows! He never answers emails either.
Creepy, uninformed and hyper-sensitive! I get along with all of my profs, but not with this guy! I'm an A student, but not in his class. I love english, he tainted this passion! Stear clear - please - I am doing you a favor!
Okay, WOW. If you want to actually learn something in an english class, stay the hell away from this guy. He gives you an outline for an assignment but when he's marking it, he decides to change his mind about the criteria and next thing you know, an F!

he used the word "symbology"
His lectures could seem dry, as he doesn't make a big effort to be on the same "level" of many first year students. While many profs try to simplify the material in an effort to get people interested, he doesn't dumb anything down. Great prof.
Yuck. Not a good teacher. Words cannot express.
Understands his stuff, but his class has a sterile and faceless atmosphere. Rigid with his rules; doesn't give an inch. Pretty thorough lecturer and you come away with a pretty good understanding of the concepts. Kind of cold when you talk one on one.
Great prof. goes over the material in great detail and gives plenty of additional sources to read if needed. The comment about "dumbing" things down is so ridiculous, you're in University now, start using your brain.
Lulls me to sleep every morning with his monotone voice in a dark classroom. He should make meditation CDs instead of teaching. A good selection of books and flexible essay topics, but extremely, EXTREMELY boring.

Clear, comprehensive, and though not riveting, not boring either. The 8.30 slot makes it hard to stay awake.
Fair marker. Knows his stuff. Pretty traditional but steady.
So the material is dry, and he doesn't try to make it any more exciting. He's a bit of dork, and laughs at his own jokes when no one else will. However, he is a fairly easy marker and I got through the class without reading a single book in its entirety. Helpful during office hours.
Dude, this guy is great!! He is so dope, he is the dork master. Its true he laughs at his own jokes, but so do I :P Yea I love his bald head, its attractive!! He sometimes giggles, its great. I love you garry :D
More concerned with page numbering and citation on your papers than actual ideas. An elementary understanding of literature. Took maybe 5 notes all semester. Lectures completely useless. A major tool. Luckily there are many english professors and you can switch.
Dr. Baillargeon is very animated. Easy class to pass on the first 1/2 of semester - not on final exam. Not much within the course on grammar. Teaches at a grade 9 level. Overall an entertaining class.
Very boring. Monotone speach. Concepts are derived solely from the textbook. Students are not encouraged to think outside the box. Nothing in the wasy of constructivist teaching strategy. Just because you have degrees in englsih doesn't mean you should be an educator.
Gerry is one of the worst profs at UVic. I feel bad becuase he is a compassionate guy, but he just does not know how to teach, plus he is such a hard marker. Do yourself a favour and change your english prof.
Excellent prof and interesting material!
Quirky and monotone lecturer, but super easy marker. Not sure where these people on this site saying he's a difficult marker get that from, but they do have multiple spelling mistakes and bad grammar, so maybe they should re-consider their english degrees.
I found there to be a decent amount of work, with reasonable deadlines. Some of the play choices were a bit meh, but others were good. Likes participation, but rarely got it. A good, approachable guy.
Too much information was given in this course. A lot of reading and he is a hard marker.
An exercise in dullness. Too much content, too little time. It isn't necessary to read the works, just take good notes in class and you'll get a great grade. Tough marker for tests, easy for essays. It's more of a history course than an English one, be prepared for that. And bring caffeine to stay awake. He's a nice guy, but...
His tendency to wear monochromatic clothing is quirky, and he gives outlines on the overhead of what is being discussed and is incredibly organized. I found that there was a lot of reading but with hard work I got an A.
SO BORING... you'll want to bang your head against a wall. hard marker. run away screaming.
He was really really boring. He kind of ruined english for me. Made everything dull, took all the passion out of poetry . . . find another english prof like elderkin or markam!
Ewwwww.... never take his class EVER
Hard marker, but I for one felt this a worthwhile challenge. Too many profs give away marks as a trade for popularity.
Very opinionated, if you don't have the same opinion as him and try to take on a different approach in an essay you'll get a bad mark. Ridiculous. Random and unclear prof. Lost marks on presentation because it fit too closely in with his lecture.
Interesting class. Fair marker.
interesting course, prof had commanding knowledge of all aspects of the content. very well structured course, sometimes took too long on background knowledge. very fair marker. slightly nervous when giving lectures it seemed.
Typically English is my favourite subject but that definately changed after taking this course. Gerry is generally a tough marker and is not open to extensions on assignments. His lectures are tedious, bland and unexciting most of the time--made it hard to come to class at 8:30am. I would not recommend this course if Dr. Baillargeon is teaching i
Appears almost nervous or uncomfortable when giving lectures...which are dry, dull and boring. Refuses to give extensions and I found him to be a hard marker as well. However, he was always well prepared for class. Watch out for the 10 page final term paper as well...brutal.
I would say likable. Very familiar with modernist backgrounds. A lot of essay writing. Always responds to email.
....wow... can a teacher get any less inspiring? Gerry is a nice guy, really self-conscious, but he does not radiate a desire and interest to teach (at least a 100-level course). I got a good an alright grade, but by the end of th term each class was just so boring - him standing at the front just rambling on... take a pass on him if you can
Enjoyed frequesnt quiizes, though it seems I wouln't. Kept us on our toes
Well constructed course, will good student and teacher interaction. Lively presentation of materials
He spent an hour with me going over the outline for my research essay. I do not see such dedication among college profs.
I am a special needs student. He took extra time to help me through the various parts of the course material, especially poetry. I actually love poetry now.
I am an amateur pot. His lessons on poetry were very thorough and worthwhile. Most educational, and he is entertaining as well. We need more people telling us about the sane beliefs of William Blake--very appropriate for our troubled times.
Made the writers of 15th and 16th century come alive for me. I could see how Marlowe was a tortured man, part humanist, part atheist. Good attitude, friendly and good strong teacher voice in a rather enormous classroom. Good sense of humour too.
Good proff, but takes a long time to explain everything. He was always available for help though!
always scratching his bald head, unsure about himself, always laughs at his own jokes, tend to laugh at him rather than with him, usually seems nervous, class rarely responds to his questions, takes forever to explain things, tends to go off on tangents, has difficulty writing on board, he taps it a lot....other than that, hes alright
Great prof. Chose interesting texts and provided helpful insight. I was especially appreciative of the historical context he provided-- why others resented this being part of an English class I have no idea-- literature doesn't exist in a vacuum. Very approachable and helpful.
DO NOT take this class with Dr. Baillargeon. I've never been so bored in an English class in my life, and this is one of my favourite periods of literature. This prof asks the most painfully obvious questions but no one in class will answer them; it's extremely awkward. Then he requires a 10+ page paper. He inspires no passion at all; stay away.
Overall I enjoyed class with Professor Baillargeon. He is a very kind man and it's obvious he is passionate about what he is teaching. He made the material very interesting, and covered a breadth of material from the period. The only downside of the class was the 10 page (plus quotations) term paper. But oh well.
I call this prof "Dr. Stein the Unsettled" as he's not unlike Ben Stein with stage-fright. It's incredibly difficult to follow his lectures because he's incredibly quiet, always sounds like he's about to cry, his writing is illegible, and he loves his meaningless tangents. It physically pained me to attend this class.
Gerry is great! This course was helpful with essay writing and citation methods, just wish I had actually taken it in first year! Gerry is quite entertaining up at the front, he mumbles and cracks himself up, and loses track of time. But he is a fair marker and wants you to do well...def an easy course, especially if you go to class regularly.
Nice guy, boring lectures.
This is a literary course, but he also stresses grammar basics. I can write and speak with confidence now in professional settings about thing that matter cluturally.
Prof Baillargeon was an interesting guy to listen to and had some fascinating ideas. A lot of the time they were hard to follow though. I liked him as a prof, but this course in general didn't appeal to me. Interactive class, so you must be ready to answer questions. He won't call on you individually though.
This is actually one of the worst classes I have ever taken. Baillargeon is painfully dull, all we do is listen to him mumble at the front of the class. He expects you to write an 8 page paper worth 30% explaining nothing that is expected until a few days before. Never take a class with him it is painfully boring!
Gerry's a good professor. His class was as enjoyable as first year english can be. He was such a fair grader, giving marks for checking the Moodle page every now and again. He just wants students to participate and be engaged in the discussion of literature. Choose Gerry for ENGL146.
Dr. Baillargeon is an awesome teacher who helps motivate the class in discussions and he a good teacher who is a bit tough on marking your papers, but he a teacher you should have for English 146
Dull lectures and poor class format. He wants it to be a discussion, but his presence does not facilitate group discussion very well. Mumbles at the front, and killed a lot of my interest in Restoration/Romantic/Victorian lit. Would not recommend.
I found the book he chose was very hard for me to read because I found it so boring. Other than that he did a decent job at teaching me some English.
Has some sort of stage fright. Horribly condescending; no matter who you are, he's better than you. Seems like he learned how to listen from an audiotape on how to listen to people when you don't care about what they say. Hard marker, especially if you've spoken up against some of his nonsensical lectures. If you're not hyper post-modern, then done
