He is a very nice guy, but just out of college! He means well, but his teaching ability is very poor. My recommendation is to read the book and handouts and not pay attention in class. He tends to ramble with his thoughts and that confuses the class! The class average on the first exam was a 40! What does that tell you!
Stay away from his class. Lectures are a waste of time. He is confusing and unclear. Just overall a lousy teacher. Grades on a 15 point scale, but approx 75% of the class failed the first test. Only 2 tests and the final so you're screwed if you fail one test. Just dropped his class, and would never take him again.
This professors tries his best to make things clear but sometimes it is not clear. The text is very complicated to read but he is willing to answer question if you ask him. If you like a challenge this is the class for you. On a more positive note he is seems to be a very nice person.
I LOVE this class. He's my favorite teacher this semester and I actually don't mind going. He can be a little confusing at times, but he makes every effort to explain himself. I really enjoy listening to him lecture, and he is just so cute! The book is a little dense, but read it, and you'll be fine. TAKE HIM!
Overall a fairly easy class. Let's you know exactly what to study for tests (only 2 and the final). Always availabe in his office if you need help and is friendly.
The most confusing teacher Ever!!!
He is so sweet! He isn't very clear but he tries hard to help you understand it. He grades on a 15 point grading scale. Overall, he's pretty good.
This is one of my favorite teachers this semester, he is so sweet and is very concerned about the welfare of his students. Although he can be unclear at times, if you read the book you will be fine. He doesn't take attendence and grated on a 15 point scale, take this class!
He's a really cool guy, a little effeminate, but it probably can't be helped considered he's a French-Canadian. If anyone complains about this course being "too hard" it's because they don't read the book. In fact, if you read the book, you only need to come to class to a watch a movie or something, or to make an impression on the professor.
Takes a couple classes to get used to because of his HUGE vocabulary and wordy sentances. Canadian. READ THE BOOK - even though it sucks and is really boring. SPEAK UP IN CLASS - helps you out HUGE if he knows your name at the end of the sem. Jumps around in his notes on the board and every class is spent reviewing the previous class a lot.
Easy class. He has notes online and he basically explains them a little more for his in-class lecture. Is really into the material.Really wants you to do well and understand the material
This teacher is awesome and sweet and kind and cute. He is sooo awesome. I love how he teaches. and you have to read the book to understand what he is talking about. he is cool guy overall.
Great class. Very easy humanities, and the teacher made it interesting. Attendance is not mandatory, but it helps to go to class... the majority of his tests are from the notes he puts on blackboard. It also helps that he grades on a 15 point grading scale :)
I truly enjoyed this class. Beaulieu really is a nice and helpful teacher. The tests would have definitely been hard had I not come to class and studied about 5 hours before each test. I had an A at the end, but I definitely put in the time. The 15 point grading scale saved my A. Read the book before class to make things easier to understand.
He can teach philosophy esp. an introductory course. You must read the book and attend lectures to completely understand the material. Does a good job in explaining readings. Gets really in depth during lecture, but when it comes to test time questions are really general. He always encourages discussion. It is hard to pronounce his name.
Ugh! Im not trying to be the bad apple, but I truly HATED this class. He is a nice man, but I don't like the way he teaches. The material is not interesting to me at all. He grades on a 15 point scale which helps. Class was a bore so I hardly went. 4 exams and that is it. If you enjoy this subject then by all means take him, but otherwise stay awa
he is so hot. if i were not his student, i would date him. he's so incredibly smart and passionate about philosophy that he actually got me interested in it, despite all the bad reviews i'd heard about the class.
Good teacher. He has a 15-point scale which means a 70 is a B. That is awesome. If you can't get an A or a B in this class, it says a lot about you.
He was a good teach who expects the students to do much of the learning rather than lecture. Referencing material is key to his test and quizes (for online classes). Overall he is a very good teacher and I would love to take another class through him.
No good at all. Do not be fooled by his 15 point grade scale. His test questions are so annoying. I've never received a D in a class but this was my first one.
Mr. Beaulieu was a decent teacher, however, I feel he is teaching the wrong course-level. He should teach a higher course as his material is much harder than a 1000 level course. I took "Intro. to Ethics" which turned out to be "Intro to Philosophers" VERY DISAPOINTING...But Overall, go to class and pay attention and you can do well.
He is a decent teacher but I dont think I learned anything about ethics the entire time. I know stuff bout philosophers yet his material does not relate anything to ethics. The class is boring, but just take notes and your be fine. I didn't even buy the book cause he goes through everything in lecture.
Of all the PHIL profs, this is the one to take. It's still not a cake walk, but it's a lot better. Readings from the text aren't really necessary, but to do well, you really need to go to EVERY class and take DETAILED notes. Tests are hard for those not of a philosophical mind, but not impossible.
Good teacher, but subject matter is ridiculously hard. Make sure to study the notes he gives you and read what he tells you to, and you should be okay. 4 tests are your only grades...
he is a good teacher but a bit confusing. ask questions in class or right after because it is absouletly ridiculous trying to get a hold of him in his office hours. just study the notes and try to get past his im in love with montreal deal.
he's a very good teacher. engages the class and unlike some other comments made, he is avaible to help and give extra material for further comprehension if requested. the only way you fail is if you dont try. and whats wrong with liking where you are from? anyways the book is like never used and its 15pt scale.
15 point scale. no attendence policy but MUST go to do well. I only missed 2 days but people who missed many days are doing poorly. I never opened the book and have an A. No need to waste the money. I recommend this teacher if you plan on attending class everyday. He is very clear about the info on test and there are only 4 test grades in the class
If you want to do well in his class you have to show up for lectures. No attendance policy. Three exams and one final. If you listen in class and take good notes you will do well. There are required readings each week, but you don't have to have the book to do well.
He's a little cutie, but his personality wasn't enough to make me want to come to class. His class was cake though. I didn't attend class the second half of the semester and did as well as when I attended class.
You have to go to class to do well, the test questions are not hard but in order to answer them, you must listen in class and take good notes. He is really sweet. He will help you and make sure you understand the material, just see him during his office hours.
he's a good professor however you have to go to class and listen to the lectures to do well on the tests. no attendance policy or extra credit. he grades on a 15 point grading scale so that helps a lot and he's a really sweet professor.
His lectures are kind of boring, but he does try to get students to participate. 15 grade point scale. I don't know how I managed to get all 80's on all four tests, but I did. Attendence is not mandatory. I really don't listen in class, but still got a B. Just study the notes and you'll do ok on the test. Never got the book and still made an B.
You are my cup of tea. The greatest Canadian export since hockey and ryan reynolds.
I find him quite confusing. He does not provide a clear cut lecture so as to make very good notes. He continuosly refers to other philosophers way down the road rather than merely talking about the ones we are currently trying to learn. I have yet to have a test; however, I have a feeling it probably won't go that well.
Professor B. is really good at teaching this course. He explains things in a real life context rather than merely telling you the theories so that you can an example to what is talking about. You can tell that he is really passionate about philosophy and that he cares about passing his students.
Do not listen to the people on this site that say this class is easy. Buy the book and read or you will fail.
I really enjoyed this professor. His tests were straight from the notes and he used real life experiences that helped make the information easier to take in. He grades on a 15 pt. grading scale!
A very good professor. Attendance isn't mandatory. Readings aren't necessary, just take good notes and study the handouts he puts on blackboard. Really cares about his students and helping them out.
Dr. Beaulieu is awesome! He's been so helpful the entire semester to me. Every time I asked him a question after class, he was eager to help and always encouraged students to come discuss class material during his office hours. When I did that, he was attentive and basically said his lecture over again. TAKE HIM! Made ethics a whole lot more fun!
Beaulieu to me was very boring. I didnt like his lectures. The handouts he posts on BB are really helpful. the tests are not hard, it just a lot of reading.
I thought his class was rather boring. He gives out a handout on Bb before the tests, but they didnt help me. He's a good guy, pretty good teacher. all exams multiple choice. final exam is comprehensive. He's not a bad teacher, but I wouldnt recommend him to anyone
I was a student of his a few years ago, and I still wish I could take another of his classes. Learn what you can from him while you can! I loved his class; his was probably the only class I never wanted to miss in my entire college career!
AWESOME TEACHER! extremely fair! tells you exactly what will be on the exam. makes a study guide. makes the class extremely fun and is very helpful. honestly this was my favorite class last year and apparently its not because of the material since all my friends who didnt have him hated philosphy! TAKE HIM
Of all the general eds I've had, this has been by far the best class I have ever taken. The class was useful and intriguing. The class discussions were exhilarating. Hardly used the book (only read when I missed a day). Beaulieu really has a way of getting his students to UNDERSTAND the material rather than memorize it. Easy-A if you're a thinker.
Awesome teacher awesome class! He is one of the most interesting and engaging teachers on this whole campus. ECU needs to hire more people like him. He is extremely helpful and makes philosophy fun and interesting.
A TOTAL CUTIE! I had him for philosophy and he was the most engaging teacher. Although the material is sometimes difficult,he will work with you to help out. He is very nice to students and if you are having problems he will try his best to help you out. Read the book and go to a good portion of lectures and you should be all set to pass his class!
grade is based solely on 4 tests, if you're a bad test taker you will not do well in his class. Study guides are very blank, basically requiring you to read the whole text. He is not afraid to say youre wrong and make you feel incompetent in his class, found this very discouraging and didn't participate in class discussion because of this.
Wouldn't recommend. You can tell that he knows Philosophy but he has a hard time putting in a way that college students can understand it. He'll ask for your view on something then tell you you're wrong. Doesn't take attendance and grades are based on the 4 exams. Vague study guides, too.
I do not recommend anyone to take Dr. Beaulieu, if you are not already aware of what philosophy. Only class that I am failing and it is supposed to be one of my easiest classes as it is a filler (humanities/fine arts requirement). Study Guide doesn't help as much. Boring subject. Not very helpful in making things understandable.
He is very knowledgeable in this subject, but makes it somewhat hard to understand. He allows you to ask questions but reading the textbook is required to do well. Even though it was boring, I learned a lot. Come to class, take notes, & use the study guides to help you.
For an intro class, it was very difficult. Lectures are all over the place and he only uses the chalkboard, no powerpoints. Spends forever repeating some topics and no time at all one others. Test are difficult. If you arent good at taking tests, dont take his class.
Don't buy the textbook. It isn't worth it. He's an extremely nice man, one of the few teachers that will get to know you by name and say hi around campus but he is kind of scatter brained and his concepts that he teaches are unclear and are rather confusing on the test. It should have been an easy A class since it was an elective but I ended w/ a B
AMAZING TEACHER ! he is really in love with teaching he feeds off people answering questions and giving ideas no need for the book i aint use it. one of the best teachers i have had (:
You DO NOT need the book for this class. He puts all of the outlines on blackboard. Attendance is not mandatory, but it is in your best interest to attend the class. The tests are based off of the outlines and his lecture. He wants class participation, so the class is as fun as you want it to be. Super nice guy!
LOVE HIM! if ethics is a requirement I would most def take him. Class should have been an easy A, but ended up with a B. Class is only 4 tests that are 25% each. Best teacher for Ethics . TAKE HIM
Was dreading this class when I signed up for it.. but I LOVED it! He makes is interesting, and keeps it simple! Take notes in class and study them, and you will make a 100 on all of your tests! The final is all old test questions! Your grade is 3 exams and a final, each worth 25% HE IS AWESOME!!
If you do not have to take philosophy for your major THAN DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I like to think I'm pretty smart, but this is by far the most difficult class I have ever taken in school. He puts the notes on the board but the material is so hard to cover. Only grades are four tests. Almost positive I will have to do a grade replacement..
Mr.Beaulieu is AMAZING! If you have to take this class, then take it with him. If you do not understand the material, go to his office. Let him know your name. I struggled a lot with this class at the beginning but I went to his office hours and my test grades went 57.5, 57.5, 87.5, 92! He really cares about your success! TAKE HIM!
Dr. B is awesome! He teaches clearly from the textbook, and does not try to persuade you one way or another. His test are easy if you skim the chapters and study key terms. He encourages questions, especially during exams. Definitely get the book, or you'll be lost. His lectures are interesting and effective. Would definitely recommend!
The only grades he uses are the four test and he has a hard time teaching a way that college students can understand. Avoid taking if possible, hardest elective I have ever taken and I have learned nothing.
Dr. B is the best ethics teacher! He's a great person, teaches clearly, and very helpful! If you don't get something he'll do anything and everything to help you understand I loved his class! Tests are straight from study guide! Highly recommend taking him for ethics! TAKE HIM DONT HESITATE YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is a really nice professor but he has a very hard time getting his thoughts across. His teaching style is weird and there are no power points, just concept maps. The study guides on cover about 25% of what is actually on the test. The test are extremely confusing and if you fail 1, you basically fail the class. BEWARE!
He is a very nice man. Loves it when you visit his office hours and is very helpful, however if you do not find the material interesting you will struggle with it. He has no powerpoints, just concept maps. He words his tests very differently from the study guide. I often find myself zoning out
Professor B. was an awesome professor. Very helpful and intriguing lectures. GET READY TO READ. The only 4 grades he gives is the 4 tests.
He's a cool guy. 4 tests (including final) all 25% which kinda sucks if you do bad on one. The first test was straight study guide. The 2nd test wasn't and kinda surprised/hurt me. But his study guides are really helpful, I would recommend always doing them. Take notes and pay attention. Some concepts are hard to understand
Biggest challenge are the 4 tests which are 25% each. No extra credit. His questions aren't too hard, but you HAVE to be in class to understand what they're about. Take notes. The book will be of little help. Listen and participate in class. He gives you the chance to review the 3 test before finals, show up and take notes.
He is a great teacher! You can tell he really knows his stuff and loves philosophy. He doesn't have notes or anything really online so you need to go to class and take good notes. His tests aren't bad if you really study and actually learn the material. Fill out his study guides-they are helpful for tests! He also encourages questions during tests
Let me just say that Dr. B is FANTASTIC. One of the best profs here at ECU. The class is simple & easy, if you go everyday you don't even have to read the textbook; anyone who says otherwise is just plain lazy. Take his class, you won't regret it! He is informative and really cares, you learn a lot! Plus he's always there to help you!
If you've taken a philosophy course before, then this class will be easy for you. If you've never taken one before then you will still be fine but you HAVE to go to class because he does not put his lectures online and if you don't understand something then ASK. But overall he's a great professor and he's willing to help if you don't understand
Dr. B is so sweet! His lectures are so interesting, you won't mind going to class. As long as you pay attention in lecture, you won't need to read the book because he explains everything so well. His tests are clear cut and come straight from the study guides he gives you.
Dr. B is easily my favorite teacher at ECU. He is really interested in philosophy and genuinely cares about what his students have to say and encourages discussion. Only grades in the class are four tests but if you attend class and pay attention it's no problem. Took him for both Intro and Ethics and will be taking his existentialism course next.
Attendance isn't mandatory but if you use the study guide to take notes you'll do well. DON'T BUT THE BOOK. He lets you go to office hours to look at old exams before the final and I highly recommend that because he asks the same questions from old tests on the final. No extra credit but he round up my final grade a good bit.
Gerry is a very good professor. The reason is, his tests and midterm are not that hard unless if you pay attention in the class and read the textbook/slides. Also, he gave a free 10% if you participate in doing exercises in the class. I recommend you guys should take with this prof.
Good guy but class was so slow and boring. Content of critical thinking was important and good but the class was my least favourite of the term. He didn't seem very prepared and stumbled over his words often and made mistakes that confused others. Couldn't remember anyone's name for the life of him even though he asked the same people every class.
Great discussion, loves the material and helping students understand, I would love to take more classes with him. (summer course at the university of Manitoba)
only take four test and a final. he doesnt post lectures, he does give a study good but i couldnt get a good grade on the test because you HAVE TO pay attention in class
Grades are all from tests, tests are all from lecture, show up pay attention ace the class that simple. Class a little boring sometimes but you'll get through it he's super helpful whenever you need it. Take him best prof in philosophy department.
Only have 5 grades in the class including the final. Only other grades are 4 tests. He does give study guides but the study guides have nothing to do with the test. Test are mainly based on his lectures. He talks really fast and often stumbled over his words. Also , usually the whole class is confused.
Genuinely cares about his students, office hours are really helpful. Attendance isn't mandatory but it might as well be because all test material is from the lectures. Study your notes and you'll do fine. Do not buy the textbook. Only assignments are 4 MC tests and a final, but he curves at the end.
Dr. B is so nice and really knows what he's talking about. He is always positive and happy which makes it easy to pay attention in class. He encourages questions in class and during the tests. Gives a good study guide and reviews before the tests, which are multiple choice and true false. Take good lecture notes and you should do fine on the tests.
Good guy but lectures everyday and can be hard to grasp what he's saying. Only graded on 4 tests so you have to do well to pass.
Struggled the entire semester. He knows what he's talking about but the tests are multiple choice and it seems like every answer is the right one. Couldn't get above a 74 for the exams.
You only have 5 grades total. Mess up one test and you are completely screwed. Nice enough guy but overall a boring and drawn out class. Would not suggest taking especially if you are the type to need extra credit.
Dr. B is really nice and explains well. He is easy but some people see him as hard because they don't pay attention to class. You must not miss a class or else you will be CONFUSED. You should always take note and you'll never need to read even when he tells you to. 3 exams and a final. You won't mess up if you pay attention and take note.
He's a great professor and anyone who says otherwise just doesn't pay attention in class. If you don't pay attention in class, you will literally not get anything. Write down everything he says YOU NEED THE NOTES TO STUDY. There are 4 exams and a final. So make sure you do well on them because thats all you get. He's super nice and encourages.
Mr. B was an amazing teacher. He's really passionate about the subject and he explains every concept and theory with clarity. As long as you show up, fill out the study guides and listen, you'll do great! I didn't use the textbook but it's good for some extra information, especially if you're a philosophy major
He didn't give any homework or quizzes, the only grades were four exams and the final.
He only uses 4 tests and the final as your grade, so make sure that you do really well on each of the tests. There were times where I didn't go to class for a week and since he posts a study guide I was always able to get an A on the exams. He's a super nice guy and will do his best to help you, just put in the work and you'll pass.
Mr. B was a great professor, he is very passionate about what he teaches so he may ramble a bit in class but he gives a study guide so you clearly understand what you need to know for each test. Sometimes I would miss class and wouldn't get the notes but was always able to still make high grades on each test.
The lectures are boring, don't know if that's because I'm not interested in philosophy or because they actually were. There are only 5 grades in that class; 4 exams and 1 final. Tests are easy 30-40 multiple choice and true/false questions. Best way to prepare for tests are the study guides he gives.
Dr. B is a great professor and really cares about his students. His class is almost entirely lectures and class discussions. He gives study guides well before each exam and if you understand what's on it, you will pass the class. You don't really need the textbook either (there were only a few passages that we used it for).
Super nice guy, fairly easy class-granted you pay attention. Pretty entertaining course as well if you give the material a chance and participate in the class discussions. Best part (at least for me) is the grading criteria. Four exams and a final, each worth 20% of your overall grade. Very simple and easy to keep up with
Dr. B is a super sweet professor, hes always willing to help if you just ask, and is available to help via zoom before exams. The lectures he posts make the readings much clearer and help a ton in the tests, just study them well and youll get a good grade. Test questions are simple and he doesnt try to trick you. Seriously take him if you can!
Awesome professor, great guy.
This class was a doozy honestly. It was definitely tough, not the lecture material; but the subject of Ethics overall was like a second language. Lots of reading, and your grade is only made up of 5 exams, thats it. Overall, Dr. Beaulieu responds fast to emails and questions. Study the material and youll do fine!
He is a very kind and nice professor however this class is extremely difficult and the tests make up your grade. had to drop.
Your grade consists of 4 tests and the final, all worth 20%. It sounds intimidating but he gives you a study guide for each test which he basically goes over word for word if you are listening in class. All the study guide answers are on quizlet but the way he goes into detail in class really helps. He is so passionate about what he teaches!
I really struggled in this class because he only gave 5 exams, they were pretty difficult as well. There was also no other work to help your grade go up if you did poorly on the exams. Your whole grade depended on the 5 exams and there was NO curve. I highly recommend not to take this teacher if you aren't a test taker!
Dr. B is very passionate about ethics but unless you're interested in ethics the class is very hard to understand. The entire class is 5 tests and the final is cumulative. Study guides are pretty comparable to the tests. Pretty difficult class but Dr. B is a good professor.
I found this class rather interesting, so I think that is why I did well in it. A lot of people struggled due to tuning out the teacher and missing class. I think the material would become confusing missing even one day. He is willing to try to help if you go to his office hours, though. If you are struggling, don't try to fix it at the very end.
Mr. B had this class online but we could go in person if we needed but he is an amazing teacher. He really knew what he was talking about and is so interested in everything about philosophy. I will say, not much material in the class besides tests but as long as you do well on the tests you will be good.
I actually found the material interesting, even though I never went to class. I was able to learn the entire unit within a day before tests. Flow charts was the easiest way to learn this information, as it all connects and can be hard to keep track. He's very knowledge and passionate about philsophy and thats very clear. He's also willing to help.
