not a bad teacher for someone who just started. he wrote his dissertation on DNA structure so he loves that... he also curves the tests so if you read and study like he suggests you should do fine
Good teacher...teaches from powerpoint notes, which are on blackboard. If you do hw and memorizing notes, tests are simple. I would take him again.
Stay away! Awful teacher with crazy questions. he never prepared us for his tests, we always learned things that we werent supposed to. The nursing school will never let him teach us again!
people say he is not the best teacher, its not true. If you study his lecture and do homework you are good to go!
I had him for lab this semester and lecture last semester. He is really cocky and his lectures are really boring. Hard to get an A but generous with the curve at the end. Read the book completely and thoroughly or else don't expect anything higher than a B-
The class is hard, but professor Buldak is extremely helpful. He goes out of his way to answer every question and make sure everyone understands the material. Very good professor, makes lecture interesting. Caveat: He likes to call on people randomly, which keeps you on your toes! Overall I really like his class. I felt sufficiently challenged.
Do not take him if you are taking a heavy load of classes. Work hard from the very first test! Class attendance is mandatory, he tries to notice people who miss classes. no extra credit. Curve does not help much. A very good teacher, aims to teach students, a challenging class!
STAY AWAY! Has 3 test and final. Makes u do homework at end of the chapter. Prepare to know every little detail b/c it will be on the tests. He shoves tons of info at u and expects u to memorize all of it. Yes he curves but don't expect much. Doesnt prepare students for tests and his cocky attitude is annoying. Don't trust me, u'll see.
I thought the last comment was from someone who hoped to pass the class without doing the necessary work, but I was wrong. I took the class, and it was a terrible nightmare. This guy was a total disgrace for me. The class itself is not that difficult. But when you add this guy's attitude, you destroy it. Don't expect an A if you're full time studen
The class itself isn't too bad but I CAN NOT STAND HIM.
He is a terrible teacher! His tests/quizzes are usually unfair, and are not good indicators of your understanding of the material. He tests you on a bunch of useless information that you have to memorize instead of the important concepts.
Prof. Buldak is really nice and teaches pretty well. I ended up with an A- in the class and felt it was not that hard to obtain. The class is easy if you put the effort in to actually read the material and go through the slides. Thankfully, when I took him he didn't give quizzes! I'd recommend taking him over the other genetics profs.
Dr. Buldalk is an awesome professor! He is very knowledgeable and he makes Genetics Lab fun & interesting :):):) I learned a lot from his lectures & the experiments that I did in class! I highly recommend him for Lab! It is definitely worth it & he is very helpful in office hours!
This is the worst professor ever. He's jokes are not funny at all. He puts on tests things that he mentions for a second, but stuff he talks about a lot never appears. He is horrible and I don't recommend him at all.
It's mandatory to come to class. He realized that his teaching methods were too hard so he redid his syllabus in the middle of the semester. Everyone started doing well. I highly recommend this teacher!
Dr. Buldak is a hard teacher. for and intro class to genetics we learned way toooo much. Great class for Biochem majors. After taking his class I breezed through Survey in Biochem. Clicker questions are part of your grade :( Be prepared to work for a B, an A is almost impossible. Pre-med stay away!!
Challenging class. He goes out of the way to help you understand material, always keeps students informed about office hours. If you put forth effort you can do well in this class. I am working full-time and had 2 other classes and still managed a B, pretty good I think!
Skip him if you can. Pourly designed tests that focus in on a narrow range of subjects. He prides himself on making things arbitrarily difficult, doesn't reward effort, gives homework that the he doesn't test on (but insists that he will). When I was struggling, and asking for assistance, he totally misguided me, causing me to waist time.
I thought the exams were easy and he taught well, three others I asked also have A's in the class. His exams are very fair and he teaches clear, recommend for easy A.
Dr. Buldak is a great professor. His exams are somewhat challenging and expects his students to know their stuff! Very approachable guy and makes sure he is available outside of class and even outside of his office hours. If you're looking for an "easy A" don't take genetics; it's a challenging course. Highly recommended!
The people that are getting A's in the class don't do anything but study 24/7 and don't have a life. His lectures are boring and pointless. Instead, consistently read the book, take DETAILED notes and pray you'll do well on the exams. If he's not mumbling incoherent, nerdy jokes then he's saying how "this will be on the exam"...and then isn't.
never take this teacher, he is trying to make hard class i don't know what he thinks him self. he kills students GPA. he helps but he wants to you think his way.he is expecting more from the students because he has big ego.
Dr. Buldak is an amazing teacher. He knows his stuff and you will learn a lot in his class. It is, however, very challenging. He assigned a take-home test this year for the first time along with in-class midterm and final. Hard grader. He expects you to at least have a good grip on the material. Very helpful if you need it outside class.
He's tests aren't easy, but you do learn a lot. If you want a fun class and learn genetics, take him. If you hate genetics, avoid this teacher; he'll force you to learn the material.
Replaced Cole for our class. only prof who offered office hours as a substitute. Made everything very easy after he realized Cole taught us nothing. Always willing to help. I recorded his lectures and listened to them to study for the exam, it helped a lot. textbook not needed but solutions manual yes.
Great Person. Worst Professor. Always willing to help. He uses PPT. Book is not necessary. but the Manual is MUST. Exam is all MC. 25 Qs. 4 pts each. Get 3 Qs wrong and there goes your A. Not an EASY A/A- class. Has to work very very very hard to earn the grade you deserve. In short, There are better profs for genetics in univ. Take them.
exams were MC because he was a replacement. other wise they are never MC. you should go to class and record all his lectures. ask for help if needed
Clear, very interesting, kind-hearted and always available to help. However, material is hard, and tests a bit tricky, but not as hard as orgo!
He's not the best teacher in the world for the material, but he's not too hard. He's not too bad. If you pay attention, do the practice problems, and review the book, you'll do absolutely fine.
You can tell he really loves what he teaches. He hints at what you will see on the exam. MOST of everything covered in class will be seen on the exam. If you want to get an A, read the lecture material ahead of time and continue to keep up with the course. Do NOT miss any classes! Exams are all MC. Comes off rude, but overall nice in person.
not really hard, but hard. Exams multiple choice but you really have to know your stuff. 10-30 hours studying. Go to class with audio recorder. Idk how he expects ppl to write everything he says down.Learn the figures. You will see them on the test. Keep up with mastering genetics. Counts as one exam.
By far my favorite prof at Loyola, taking him again for immunology. This class is hard but most of the science courses at this level require effort. Know the diagrams from ppt slides, record lectures, take good notes and use them to study from. Exams are based on lecture, got an A in this class and didn't open the book once.
For me this Genetics class was an easy A, but I did notice many people struggling in the class. I would not recommend this professor. His lecture slides are poorly written and his lecture style is erratic. I got my A by reading the textbook, his slides/lecture were useless to me.
Genuinely a really nice guy who gets a bad rep. Overall the class is VERY demanding but what do you expect out of a medical school-caliber course? Know the lectures like the back of your hand, he loves details and literally everything is fair game for exams! Take him if you're into medicine and aren't afraid to work hard.
Tough class, but one of my favorites! Lectures can be muddled, but he is very helpful outside of class. Great guy. Enthusiastic. Dedicated to helping students understand the material. Plan to supplement/reinforce lectures with book. Only big complaint is that PowerPoints are not well composed and he withholds certain slides to promote attendance(?)
To get an A, read the chapters, study the chapters, know the chapters, live the chapters, be the chapters... You have to put in a lot of work for this course! Tests are similar to MCAT Q's-apply your knowledge. He is very helpful and will go out of his way to make sure you do well. Record the lectures!
Very challenging class b/c of how much material you learn. He keeps things interesting with some humor here&there and comes up w/ some good analogies to remember things. Memorize the slides & only use the book as a reference (as should be done for every bio class). He's a laid back guy and I'd definitely take him again if I could.
Awesome Professor. Would take again.
Dr. Buldak is awesome!!! The material can be hard, but he does a great job of answering class questions and keeping things interesting with nerdy humor. Definitely going to take other classes with him again.
Not the greatest prof I've ever had, but definitely not the worst. Takes off points for stupid reasons (lose 20% on labs for not underlining scientific names and a host of other minuscule errors). If you are careful and follow his fussy guidelines you can get an A. He pretty much tells you word for word what he wants you to write on lab reports.
Great teacher. He is passionate and loves his job. Class is hard, but interesting.
Buldak is a great guy, but a terrible lecturer. I did well in the class by reading the textbook (as I learned absolutely nothing from lecture) and scored above the class average by over 20 points every time. He knows his stuff, and he makes an effort to try to make it understandable but it just is not enough.
I thought Buldak was fantastic. He tries to make his lectures as engaging as possible and sometimes the material can be dry but he manages to make it interesting. He really knows his stuff. Tests are tough, definitely not something you want to cram for but they are fair and manageable. And he gives lots of extra credit plus no actual homework!!
I absolutely loved Dr. Buldak. He has made me want to become a genetic councilor. He is extremely helpful in office hours. I'm in the summer class so it's a little crammed. He makes lectures very interesting. His exams are exactly like the book problems, so do them! Overall, great professor.
Very clear with expectations and makes jokes along the way. Tests are quite difficult, particularly anything to do with pedigrees. Overall, follow guidelines stringently and you will be okay. Five points extra credit were offered on each of the two exams.
His lab exams are unbelievably hard! Only 1 student in the entire lab got an A on either of his exams (worth 2/3 of grade, and no curve). Do NOT take him under any circumstances possible. All other Genetics lab professors are MUCH easier to the point it is unreasonable. This lab actually has a C average. I think only 1-2 ppl got A. Avoid plz !
Enrolling for this lab class was the worst academic experience of my life. He literally screams at you if you do something un-sterile in lab. You will NOT get an A because his lab exams are beyond ridiculous. He's always looking to take off points for something. He refuses to give any hints on questions. This is the Helquist of Genetics lab. Aweful
This is the hardest professor I have ever taken. Do not ever take this professor. He LITERALLY does not give A's. As I went in for 282 help and was going over my grade, the class list with everyone's grade appeared on his computer screen. Out of the 25 students on the screen, not a single student had higher than an 85% in the class. But 90% is A.
We had 4 tests, no quizzes & no hw. The 1st test was all FR, the 2nd was 1/2 FR & 1/2 MC, and the last 2 were all MC. They were tough but he tells you what to expect. When studying, read the book, do the practice problems &/or go see him. He's approachable & a funny guy. Curved the final grading scale!
Genetics lab is not an easy class at all. He's very clear on the questions for the 2 lab exams but they're still very difficult. The labs themselves aren't too bad but pay special attention during lab lectures. No pop quizzes and the class has a small curve at the end. Always willing to help with any questions and is nice person.
Really one of my favorite teachers. Shows passion for what he loves, and specifically the genetics behind the immune system. Makes reference to many "old school" pop-culture. I loved the class. Lectures were helpful with further clarification of ideas, but need to Read the book or skim. Homework problems are optional, but do them to solidify ideas.
Dr. Buldak was a good teacher: passionate about the material and capable of transmiting that interest to students in his lectures. He assumes students are going for medicine school so he tries to keep the information and rigor of the class on that level. He was a nice guy but very disorganized. His tests were very hard and the class was very tough.
Really passionate about immunology and SO knowledgable, but the extent to which he expects us to know the material is ridiculous. Assumes that everyone taking his class is going to medschool, so teaches it in great detail. Tests are completely short answer w/ differently weighted questions. Lectures and lab is unorganized sometimes.
Immunology was the hardest class I ever took, but also the best. Dr. Buldak really wants his students to succeed & makes that apparent always. He does a great job of teaching difficult material & making it understandable, while also relating it to real life issues. Although this class is tough, I would definitely recommend it as a Bio elective!
He's honestly such a tough grader and he makes his exams unbelievable tough. He might be a nice guy, but do NOT take him if you care about your grade. He's alright during lectures but he sometimes goes off on tangents which can get boring. Nevertheless, wouldn't recommend him.
Dr. Buldak is a knowledgable, well-respected professor. The class itself is probably one of the hardest upper level, undergraduate biology classes at Loyola. However, Dr. Buldak succeeds in helping you understand most of the concepts that need to be keyed in on. He often focuses on mechanisms and uses powerpoint slides to illustrate. STUDY THESE!
Don't take him under any circumstances. Highly unorganized way of teaching. PowerPoint slides barely have any words. Very hard exams. When I walk out of his lectures, I feel like dying. Plz stay away.
Lectures are not related to exam. The exams are beyond extremely difficult. I felt that a lot of people were failing the course after the first exam. Unreasonable amount of stress. Do yourself a favor and run for your life.
I will not recommend taking this professor. He honestly doesn't know how to teach. Had to drop this class after the first exam.
Unsure why Professor Buldak has a lower rating - his lectures are super engaging, and he doesn't waste time talking about things that won't be tested. Exams are difficult, but he curves the final grade so that whatever the class average is becomes a C+. He makes you work for your grade, but he's such a great lecturer I never minded.
Buldak is a nice guy and genuinely wants you to succeed in his lab, but his lab exams are HARD. You really need to understand the labs in order to do well. Don't be afraid to ask him for help early on, and really pay attention during pre-lab lectures. He is one of the better genetics lab instructors.
Record every single lecture and then take detailed notes. When he says that tests involved drawing, that's not a joke. Make sure to know every pathway from the powerpoints and the animations that go with them. Extra credit is offered on exams and during the course which is a life saver, but be prepared to study!! DON'T take as a blow off class.
Dr. Buldak is very caring and is a great lecturer. For lecture: take notes, record, and rewrite over and over. Teaching each other and forming study groups helps a ton. Ask him questions when confused. I felt that lab exams were harder than lecture exams. By far the best bio elective and the most rewarding!
An absolutely fantastic professor. I took him for immunology. The material is hard and there's a lot of it, but Dr. Buldak will do his absolute best to help you every step of the way. His lectures are all extremely well thought out with helpful diagrams and visual aids made from scratch. He also makes sure to do pre-test reviews.
Your exam grades count for 200 points total while everything else combined isn't for more than 50 points so be prepared for them cause they make or break your grade. He talks so much about things that barely matter so expect to stay for the entire class. You never know when things are due and what you need to have for class.
Do not take him. He never responds to an email. Your exams are worth way too many points in relation to everything else. Also, the exams are some of the hardest ones I have ever taken (harder than the lecture class). He is 10x harder than other lab professors. Also, he completely messed up my final grade in the class by 3 letter grades.
DO NOT TAKE!! The class wasn't difficult, but his tests were IMPOSSIBLE and did not relate to what we learned in class and make up most of your points. The other genetics lab professors give fair exams and are much better. He never replied to emails (even during COVID) and entered all of our grades wrong in locus!! Take someone else!! not worth it!
Nice guy, but cannot get a clue. Tests extreme detail of everything. Never know if tests are going to be on lecture or textbook. DID NOT RESPOND to multiple emails. Avoid at all costs.
Dr. Buldak is an amazing professor! He was always quick to respond to emails and his lectures were straightforward. He wants his students to do well but you have to keep up with the material or you will not pass. Definitely recommend him!!
The classes he teaches are certainly not easy, because the subject is simply just not easy. But he lectures well, always pause to clarify things, and cares deeply for his students. You do have to work for it, but it's possible for a good grade. He does call on your randomly on zoom class so be aware if you are shy! Overall, so caring and accessible
dr. buldak is very kind & accessible. he assumed we knew a lot more than what we did, but he met us at our pace for the most part. he took responsibility when a project was too challenging & made a different one. labsters are async & class is sync so felt like 2x the workload, but he's very respectful & supportive of his students. would take again
Professor Buldak is by far one of the most knowledgeable professors I have taken as a neuroscience major at Loyola. However, the pace and structure took me completely off guard. Lecture grade was based on three tests all of which required drawings. Good prep for grad school, but be prepared to put in 2 hours for every lecture for notes and review.
Dr. B is seriously the best. It's clear that he cares about his students, he is kind, approachable, and organized. The class is lecture dense, but he always breaks down the material in a clear and concise way. Although it's a tough class, exams aren't bad so long as you study well. I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent in his class.
Really sweet Professor. Knows what he is talking abt and cares abt his students. Listen to lectures and do practice problems
Dr Buldak is such a sweet and caring guy and is always accessible and willing to help his students. His exams aren't too challenging as long as you study right. He is kind of unorganized and doesn't make the best use of time. His lectures can also be pretty dry and dense, but overall I recommend him. He also curves the class at the end.
Dr. Buldak is decent at explaining the material but he can be a little disorganized at times. I recommend reading the textbook to get a solid grasp on the material after watching his lectures. He's very accommodating for his students and really wants them to succeed. Genetics is hard no matter what so I recommend studying a lot of this class.
Dr. Buldak was unorganized in general, and it was difficult to know what to expect for the next class. However, he is very caring and understanding when it comes to deadlines, and gave lots of good feedback on lab reports. He also had clear expectations for the reports.
Dr. Buldak is one of my favorite professor's at Loyola. His classes are challenging, but doable if you put in the work. I found that making detailed study guides and drawing out all the processes prior to the exams work well. Take him if you are a hard-working student and plan on applying to med school!
This class is entirely exams. The exams do not follow clearly with either his lectures or the book. His lectures are solely pictures which he uses to explain, but will often lose himself or go off on tangents wasting class time. You will be very underprepared for the exams so be ready to dig yourself out of a low grade the entire semester.
Professor Bulk is a very nice guy but his lectures are impossible to follow. He expects everyone to know what he's talking about when we just started discussing the topic. The exams were nothing like the lectures which made it hard to even study for them. Plus he is impossible to reach and does not focus on student questions. Do not take!
I'm writing this as I'm freaking out about our midterm exam which we have in less than 24 hours. he just released 70 additional slides to the material we were already studying because he forgot to put those power points in for the exam materials before. unclear, altered the syllabus without telling us, forgot we even had a midterm!!!!!! dont take
The majority of the class was around 60%. He is not a good teacher and is very disorganized. We covered general cell bio chapters and covered genetics only in the last 3 lectures. He uploaded zoom recordings with problems during finals week and the final exam included only problems that he covered on the recording that he uploaded the day before.
One of the smartest profs I ever had. Very knowledgable in his field. no multiple choice, tests ask you to draw out mechanisms so you really have to know your stuff for the exam. there was a huge course curve at the end so if you feel you are underperforming, just know there is a curve. He's tough but fair; approachable and caring
Good hearted person that is fun to listen to sometimes, but you can tell he lost his drive to teach due to his long tangents during lectures and his unwillingness to pinpoint topics. Be prepared to read and self-teach and possibly use YouTube as a resource but really expect to depend on the book for material.
Loved him for genetics. I honestly thought his exams were not bad at all and that's coming from someone who tends to do the bare minimum work. Would have been an easy A if I put in more effort, but hey a B for basically no effort is not bad.
Super unorganized. For lab he never has a clear due date or rubric for assignments or quizzes. For lecture he does not do a great job of preparing us for the exam. You really have to be invested in the book to do well in huis genetics lecture. He is a nice person and wants you to succeed but you have to spend a lot of time in his office hours.
He obviously wants his students to succeed so don't be afraid to reach out to him. His lectures are SUPER dense but he makes great slides. I HIGHLY recommended filling in the gaps with the textbook outside of class. He only occasionally assigned homework and it was not bad. The exams were not so bad but definitely start studying early.
so so so disorganized. hardly anything was posted on the sakai site in a timely manner. the dates on the syllabus were incorrect so no one ever kno
Very disorganized, arrogant, and all exams are drawing. Does not prepare you well or answer questions directly. Lectures are full of irrelevant tangents and you are encourage to take notes outside of class.
Dr. B is really passionate about histo. 3 lecture exams, 3 practicals. Lots of drawing. Super helpful in lab. This class is content heavy but possible. He will make time for students to go back to lab outside of scheduled lab hours. He genuinely cares and wants to see students succeed. Start studying early, practice drawings. Curves at end
