If you like primary sources, he's your man. Story-time with Professor Kadish.
One of the few history professors who makes you like history
Great guy, makes every lecture fun. He has great stories to tell.
interesting and knowledgable man
He's easy to understand. but can ramble on at times about points that you can't be sure are relevant.
Loves egypt, doesn't make it history but instead random fact time... hard to know what's important but interesting if the lights stay on
Kadish is great i feel like im listening to an ancient Greek orator...can be funny too i love the beard man
His lectures can be really interesting. His wealth of knowledge is amazing. He is personable and a great resource. His courses are some of the most interesting that I've ever taken.
I wish I had the knowledge this man has!! He is so learned in the ancient civilizations, but his lectures get a little boring at times. I wish I wasn't pledging during his class or else I would have been more awake!
Kadish is an awesome guy! the lectures can get boring, but if you pay attention he has some good jokes!! he's a good guy, better than a lot of history classes I've taken!
Really nice, compassionate, sweet guy!
I WISH EGYPT MAN WAS MY GRANDPA!!!
Excellent teacher, a leader in his field.
Very good and has a large amount of knowledge in his field. Weird thing: always relates history to sex.
Gerald Kadish is my hero. Kicks history's ass. He knows too much about everything. His lectures are really interesting, and his vast knowledge makes you seem lucky to be in a class with him teaching. If you listen to the lectures, you will do fine in this
Professor Kadish is a great teacher. He's so intelligent that I'm surprised he's not teaching at Harvard. I bet that if you ask him any question about history, he'll not only tell you the answer clearly but he'll tell you a fact that you didn't even know.
Out of the 10 required history classes for the BA, I took four classes with Kadish. Did well in Rise & Fall of Rome and West. Civ, not so great with The Greek World and the Ancient Near East kicked my butt! Still the best classes I took were with Kadish.
A fair teacher and knowlegable as well, Kadish is likeable. Yet, I find myself falling asleep in his lectures because he's just so boring! Take his class and do the readings and you'll be fine.
Yeah this guy is great!!! He has a very soothing voice, so come to class rested. He is super intelligent, and I too wish he was my Gramps. He probably has great stories to tell.
I don't even go to binghamton anymore but I wanted to give this guy a good rating. He is a genious and take as many classes with him as you can
nice guy, good professor...come to class RESTED or you'll fall asleep, sounds like grandpa
WHY HASNT THIS GUY RETIRED? He is terrible and I doubt he even cares about teaching anymore.
Kadish is like the genius gentleman. Also, he gives out midterm and final review sheets that usually put you in a very good position to do well on his tests.
though he was extremely knowledgeable he was a very boring and dull lecturer
I thought I signed up for a history class, not a poetry reading! My man reads from a book for an hour and a half straight...no structured lectures...an overall crappy class to take first semester freshman year. I learned more from the TA than him.
He is a great prof. He is very intelligent! It is almost mind-boggling. Although the material is fascinating he is one boring lecturer. Maybe it's just because he is old...?
Lectures can be exhaustive, and usually turn into him reading from his assigned books. Dry humor inserted at points to lighten the mood. Beyond knowledgable in his field, a true college professor...Highly recomended for the history student
kinda boring... very monotone. cracks jokes once in a while. pretty easy class. do the reading and you'll probably get an A.
His lectures are dry to a lot of people. I think he laid everything out pretty well, and if you do the readings you are guaranteed atleast an A-. Very helpful in office hours
he's a pretty good professor. very knowledgable about the material, its an easy A if you do all the readings and come to class. although somewhat boring, interesting once you pay attention.
Professor Kadish is a fine teacher. I was a freshman and he let me join his junior course because he saw that I had the potential to do well in that subject, and I did. I miss him as an instructor but I will always remember his informative lectures.
Can you say ZZZZZZZZ....? nap time. He knew his stuff, but showed slides and turned lights down low.. not good mix!!! Exams were rather easy though.
Gerry is a great teacher and a great guy in general. His knowledge of many areas of history is encyIopedic. I regret that I only took one class with him, but every time I ran into him, even over year after the class, he would always ask how I was doing.
the quintesential college prof & very interesting!
Mind like a steel trap. How can he possibly remember all that? He never looks at his notes. Don't take him just for Gen Ed credit or you'll be bored to tears. If you care about the subject though he's awesome.
The man knows everything. He's a nice old guy whose essay tests are really easy. That being said, he's really boring. It becomes an accomplishment sometimes if your able to stay the whole hour.
Extremely intelligent professor, and very nice and helpful. Lectures tend to be boring, though at times he gives amazing lectures. Lots of information but essay tests are graded very easy. Should keep up with reading to do well on tests.
This guy is the living embodiment of the sagely professor. He is a limitless well of knowledge, and communicates it easily in his lectures. Do your reading, or you'll wish you had (like me...)
The man is a genius... he knows everything. Take it and you'll learn so much from him. Unfortunatley he is so boring and often reads just from his book making the lectures useless... hes a pretty funny guy though.. class is pretty easy.. worth taking
The man is an encyclopedia with legs. He's perhaps the smartest man i've ever met. He's a nice guy and his lectures are interesting. It can get boring at times but its worth it. I will definatly be taking more of his classes and you should too.
Haha what an easy grader. If you know the stuff pretty well you'll do fine.
Heres the deal, the guy reads from a book the entire lecture, trying to get the class interested rather than giving some actual "opinion" or "knowledge" on the subject matter. The TA's are very knowledgeable, and helped alot. I found going to the bathroom during class more interesting than the class
Sooooo boring.I couldnt tolerate it anymore so i only came when he gave out the essay topics for his midterm & final. They're essays and all straight from the book. Easy B/B+. Unless you're interested in the topic don't torture yourself with his boring lectures.
Verrryy boring. Go to class to get the essay topics for the midterm/final and study them and you'll do fine. All the other lectures and readings are pointless and boring unless your interested in the topic. Easy B if you do what I did.
I took 3 classes with Kaddish. He knows his material and he seems really nice, but he is so incredibly BORING. In my opinion, he really isn't fit for teaching.
I took his Ancient Near East class and I gotta tell you-it is extremely slow. Its not hard material at all but his tests are strictly essays-a midterm and a final-and you need to recall lots of information-king lists, locations, battles, etc. that took place thousands of years B.C. Nice guy though!
Kadish is the smartest man alive. His lecturing style is dry, but he is also funny if you are smart enough to catch the jokes (you probably aren't). If you read the material you will be golden. Paying attention or coming to class is less important. He likes to show ancient****.
He knows everything that happened in the BC time period. Everything. Seriously, you can try to stump him. He is boring and reads from the book, but is interesting if u like the subject. He only gives essay tests and no other form of graded coursework. Hes funny, but the humor is very educational. He like to bash accepted theories about history.

Went to about three classes and got a B+ in the class. All you have to do is go to a couple classes before the midterm and final so you can get the study guides which tell you what questions he will give on his essay tests. Do alot of the reading he assigns and you will easily be able to answer these questions. Would say its hard to get an A thou
I have taken several classes with Professor Kadish, and all I can say is that this man is brilliant!! He knows pretty much everything about ancient history. If you are interested in the topics you will love his classes. Do the assigned work, go to class, and you'll do well!
Ah, Kadish is kind of out of his field for the Japanese history class. He lacks an "insider's understanding." His lectures are extremely boring, the only class I've ever been tempted to fall asleep in. He assigns fairly short and simple reading assignments, but then he reads from them in class, so he doesn't encourage homework! He seems kind of disorganized as well, and often gets to class late - if students should be on time, so should profs!
I took five classes with Kadish during my time at Bing. He is very boring especially at 9:40, But he knows his stuff and is willing to help you if you don't get it. You dont have to go to class to get an A just do the reading and you're golden.
People are right, sometimes he can be boring...because he is so good. He is beyond smart...he knows everything about the topic of discussion. If he seems dull it is because he has oratory skills that aren't appreciated in todays world and because he is so mathodical (plus, he has a soft, somewhat monotone voice..which fools some people). GREAT!
Boring but u can get by w/o going to class and studying off of the outline he gives b4 th test
He's smart I'll give him that, but he was extremely boring and will make you fall asleep in class. He goes off on a lot of tangents and the study sheets are no real help being that it just included everything that we learned. He's better at telling stories.
I loved this class. It's true that you must be interested in it to be able to survive through lectures, but I think he is an awesome professor. I am currently petitioning to get into another class of his. He REALLY knows his stuff, and is very Helpful if you ask (duh), funny, and really likes to help students. I thought this class was eassy.
He is the quintessential paradigm of pedagogy and scholarship. He would put Ken Jennings to shame without even breaking a sweat. If you have an interest in history and like to read, you should defiantly take his class. Lectures are, yes boring at times, but also rich with historic tidbits you would not stumble upon yourself.
The ultimate history professor, have taken several of his classes and loved them all. Reading can get a little overwhelming, but he is always happy to help a student in need. there is no room for politics in his teaching which is refreshing in today's college world. tests can be frightening, but if you know material you are safe
Every history major loves this guy, and how could you not. If you dont feel like going, don't. If you want to do the readings, go ahead. He's just a classic example of that old professor you must have at college. Nice guy.
Pretty easy class considering you really dont have to go. Ever. Just read the text and you should at least manage a B - B+. Lectures aren't very interesting but attendance isn't enforced so its not that big of a deal. Bottom line, take the class, its not a lot of work for a good grade.
Hes a really nice guy, you dont EVER have to go to class but if you dont go, make sure you can **** essays well. He gives you a study guide of essays before every test. Hard class if you cant write well.
History of Japan was full of a decent account of the military actions that were embarked upon. Beware of "The Tale of Genji" an obscenely long and poetic book, you HAVE to write a paper on it it is easy if you are familiar with the book. Tests are all essay so if you are a writer, good, if not, WATCH OUT!!
Very interesting class. If you go to class you will get a good grade. Only midterm and final and not to much reading assigned for the course.
Japanese history was pretty good. You dont have to go to every class, i went to most. I wasmad because the TA who graded my final essay graded me poorly while when he graded my midterm essays he gave me perfect marks. Very focused on writing skills, and his lectures are straight from the text book... word for word. Good class though
The best professor I ever had!!! He made the class very interesting and enjoyable. When I see anything about ancient Egypt, I think of him. He knows his stuff inside and out. I've always had so much respect for him. I looked forward to going to his classes. I learned so much from him.
Knows his stuff, class is stuff learned from Highschool, so skipping class will be ok, but not Discussion. Only 3 grades; Midterm, 15 page report, and Final. Really depends on which TA you have, some are very heavy with grammer and stuff which is not history but watever. Good teacher, can be a lil boring though
THE GUY KNOWS EVERYTHING. THAT IS ALL I HAVE TO SAY!
Great knowleagable teacher. I little boring at times in lecture but otherwise a great class. I learned alot and professor Kadish is very approachable for help. My TA was great as well.
He knows his stuff. He knows everything. I took almost every class that he taught and loved all of them. If you get a chance take one of his classes you won't be dissappointed.
Very serious professor. Seems to have a lot of information.BUT!!! He spends most of class time reading from various books. He uses no real outline despite which makes note taking and studying a pain. You do however have a study sheet a week before the exam which is the only thing helpful in the course. The TAs are a hit or miss some of them The
He seems to know a hell of a lot, but I mostly wouldn't know because I always fell asleep so quickly in his class. Don't take anything with him if it's in the morning. Read at least a few of the histories and you'll probably be in good shape.
I took his Egyptian art history class and History of Rome. It's been awhile, but he was such a great teacher! I remember falling asleep during one of exams and he actually let me take it in his next class. He is a great guy!
great professor, knows alot. if you're not interested in the subject, can be boring. know how to write an essay test and you're set. great professor and class to take if you like the subject.
One of the greatest teachers I have ever had. Extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Every class is a journey into the past with an amazing professor who has actually been there as our guide. I highly suggest his class for anyone interested in Ancient Egypt.
Erudite
Overall, I thought Professor Kadish was dry, boring, and unorganized. Granted, he is a walking encyclopedia, however, he does not present this material in a learnable fashion suitable for most students. A handful refused to show up, another handful fell asleep, unfortuantely, I was the student who forced himself awake, sadly, it didn't pay off.
Dr. Kadish conveys a solid understanding of Ancient Egypt. Frankly, from Kufu to Cleopatra, he's the guy. I think a trip to the Valley of the Dead would be a real interesting foray with his expertise. I know thing I never wanted to know about Egypt.
It's a privilage to be one of his students. He is very inspiring and helpful. It's amazing to listen him, he knows a lot.
Kadish stands at his desk and speaks for one hour, sometimes reading from the assigned reading for the day. Notes are completely up to you. He has an old man's drawl that makes him impossible to listen to for an hour straight. He basically knows everything, literally, but not the best professor in the world. I just can't stay awake!
This man is a true historian, and sometimes he goes off on stories just because of how smart he is. Look at his course outline topics to understand what the lecture is about and disregard anything he says not relating to that. The Perry book is important, you don't need the txt if you go to lecture. He will either bore or fascinate you. Fair grader
He is the most intellectual man I know! Really good professor, lots of reading though he reviews it and you have to work hard for his final paper because he KNOWS EVERYTHING!
Easy class but going to class is terrible. He knows so much but he just lectures for an hour without notes or powerpoints for students. Really hard to follow but reading the textbook is just as good. You don't need to go to class, just study what's on the study guide before the test and make sure you're a good writer. Relatively easy to do well
not a hard class but it sucks. you will never experience boredom like you will in his class. i stopped going after 4 weeks, went to all the discussions, and pulled off a b with minimal effort. one 12-15 page paper sucks. again, most boring class/professor ever
Reads directly from the textbook, so the only reason to go to class is the study guides which tell you exactly what to study. Two essay tests during the semester and a final that is two essays that are graded separately, making four total tests.
the most adorable little old man professor this school has to offer. easy tests, too (gives you study sheets). lectures are beyond pointless though, as 90% of what he does is reading out of the textbook or is directly in the textbook.
lets just say if you need a nap, attend his lecture.
Dr. Kadish is the smartest professor on campus in his discipline. Lectures can be dry, but it's fascinating to be listen to someone who knows so much. He is very helpful outside of class and wants to see his students do well. Take the next possible class you can with him. He is retiring soon and a class with him is a great experience.
Kadish is a legend. Even though I'm not a big history fan and I found his lectures boring, I came to appreciate how much this guy really knows. He's been to many places around the world and he tells about them during lectures. He will retire at the end of the Spring 2013 semester, so if you have a chance to take a class of his, I would do so.
Definitely take a class with him. Probably the most knowledgeable professor on campus in history. Does sometimes read out of textbooks, but he only reads from ones which you don't already have (aside from primary sources). Very interesting and informative.
Very nice guy but very old and gave unbearably boring lectures. I took Roman history with him and the lectures were just non-stop one hour regurgitation of minutiae without any real structure. Nonetheless the lectures weren't mandatory and the grade was only based on a midterm and final test. Ultimately the class was easy to pass but very boring.
I took him my last semester, never went to class, just for the study guides. The material is interesting but his voice makes you fall asleep. Take him if you have the chance, easy A.
It was an easy class, but extremely boring. All he did was read his notes for an hour. You could get away with only showing up to class for the study guides and reading the textbooks prior to exams.
I took Introduction 101 in 1964- And Dr. Kadish is still here today. Great guy- excellent teacher, and all round decent human being. learn from him now.
His Roman history class in 1965 was terrific, setting me off on a lifetime hobby interest in ancient authors , archaeology exhibits, historic sites.
