He's brilliant. He keeps class interesting with stories of his life as well as the course material itself. Whether you be very interested in anthropology or just hoping to get a credit, I recommend you take this course.
Good professor. Makes the class alive with his stories. I had him over the summer and did fine. The reading material is alot, but interesting. Speak up in class(he likes opinnions), review the material, and you should do fine.
Not clear on material at all. I got a C and didn't learn much at all.
this guy is awesome! his life stories really and truly make the class a lot more fun and real. this class literally makes me think differently about how the world is and how we are all really the same (as humans) it's just that our life experiences and language and culture mold us the way we are and why. this class was an eye-opening experience!
loveddd his class. lots of reading to keep up with though. covers a lot of interesting material in his class- including excerpts from his own life.. he should write a book lol. awesome professor.
I had him over the summer and loved him. He teaches through his experiences/stories and it's great. Brings a lot of interesting points/subjects to class. LOVES ppl who have opinions. A lot of reading but it's interesting. Just listen and read and you'll do fine.
Extremely articulate...if anything, take the class to learn how to speak better! Ladies...if he cut his hair and trimmed the beard, total J Crew material. Ow.
Well I have absolutely no interest in anthropology so I really didn't like it very much. He is a hippie, but don't be too quick to judge as I did. He's actually very helpful, but vague. I prefer more structure, he's very carefree. There is a lot of reading, we did 5 books this semester, the only one I enjoyed was the last one. But if you enjoy this
His classes are easy as long as you show up to some of his classes and also do the reading that is issued. Other than that he is cool, curses all the time. take him if you want to learn about different cultures.
at first look he seems cool, but he is not as cool as he shows. He is easy but a little bit tricky.you might think you have a good grade, but he may give you a C.he doesn't care about attendance .there are 5 book that you havre to read, but not completley.
I loved his classes I think he is a great professor, but you do have to have an interest in anthropology to be able to enjoy his class
Very vague.
I ended up with a C in this class. I really was expecting a B. He is very vague. He doesn't count attendence...even if you do come to every class I really do not think that it counts for anything to him. I did all the reading. I turned in all the assignments. I came to every class except one or two. But I got a freaking C.
I attended religiously. I worked my butt off on the required assignments/papers, but if he doesn't like your comments or opinions, you won't make a good grade. His mouth is foul (alot of F bombs), and he won't respond to emails. Unless you have to take the class, don't.
Mr. Sullivan was a great teacher! I wish I could have him for all my classes. His class is basically all lecture. He's extremely smart. Just do the reading and write about how it effects you and you're golden. Think outside the box and you'll do fine. He helps to teach you to think, so if your not there to think and learn you won't enjoy it.
he is aw some i so recommend this teacher
A complete and total snooze fest. This guy just goes on and on and on about absolutely nothing. He has no set expectations so who knows what kind of grade I will get?? Do not take this class, it is by far, hands down the most boring 50 minutes of my entire life!
very interesting guy..do your work and you'll pass.
His lectures are mostly boring. He doesnt care if dont come to class or if you are really late to class. He's pretty laid back..comes to class with no shoes. If you read the assigned books you'll do fine on his tests.
Basically an A with a price. You spend 150+ dollars on about five books you dont even KNOW if youre going to use, you dont even need them, he is so unorganized, I do not reccomend it unless you are okay with blowing your money off. :|
Absolutely awful! The most boring class I have ever been to in my life! He gives lectures that make no sense. His grading is completely subjective, there is no right answer, its if he likes your answer. Do not take this class, complete waste of time!
Absolutely awesome! One of the best teachers i have ever had! He doesn't care about attendance... a few papers to write but they're really easy. He tells really cool stories and is so interesting to listen to! Definitely knows his stuff and is very helpful... great great class!
Probably the most easy going friendliest profs I've ever had. He just expects you to work hard and try to do your best. One of my favorites of all time.
I took his class a few semesters ago. He does seem really easy going, and class is pretty much just a disscusion. You have to read a lot of books! It was very hard to understand what he wanted sometimes. I did not like his teaching style.
Took Prof Sullivan's class this summer and crammed 3 books into 5 weeks. It was a lot, but he bases most of his exams on his lectures. The research paper is time consuming as well. He admits to being a "hippie" but I found his teaching style unusually good! I would suggest everyone to take his class!
Great teacher and class! It is hard work though, you have to read the books and listen a little in the lectures. He does require several books, and not all are always used so buy when you know you need one.
The class is boring...Sullivan did not capture my interest. It's all lecture and little discussion. He'll ask a question at the beginning of the class from ONE student at the beginning of the class, then lecture on it for 50 minutes. I filled a whole notebook with doodles to keep myself occupied in his class. Booorrriinnggg.
I really really enjoyed prof sullivan. I was interested in the material, so that probably helped quite a bit. He is very articulate, and helpful, although I must agree that he is a bit vague on what he expects. I think thats mostly due to his laid back personality. I agree with whoever it was that said J. Crew material. :)
This class was absolutely terrible. Sullivan changes books and expects them to be finished every two weeks, which is fine if you read and do nothing else, then he wants EXTREMELY vague papers written over a new topic each week. No variety in the course whatsoever. All you do is sit there and listen to him rabble. It's not engaging at all.
If I had to describe this course... I could'nt. Just don't take his class, trust me.
I thought he was pretty cool!!! Lots of lecture, but easy grade. I would take another class with him!
Welcome to College! Prof Sullivan is the very kind of teacher that can help you think in a new way! You will enjoy the class if you stick with it and speak up during or after class. You can get a great grade if you stay with it. Good Luck!
Makes concepts simple, highly interactive class, ensures that students understand the concepts.
Terrible instructor.
I was extremely disappointed with both of his classes.
he has you read books instead of text books which make the reading easier. class work consist of weekly reading assistants short something or other of what you read.a quizes on each book, then a paper.
A wonderful class from a spectacular professor. Books on anthropological study as opposed to text books, and the lectures clarify the assigned reading. Said lectures are comprehensive and offer many accounts on the subject at hand, not just the account in the book. Sullivan is also extremely laid back and always willing to assist. Brilliant man.
He wants you to think. He gives you the tools that you need to draw conclusions. I enjoyed his class.
Taking him now and don't know what to think. On one hand, boy can he lecture and it's very interesting sometimes. On the other, he has a terrible tendancy to curse-- today he used the term bl*w job, which I know isn't exactly cursing, but I really don't hear that out of a professor. Lots of books to buy. Lots of f-bombs. LOTS of lecture.
Too vague on what he wants from you. Needs to take a course on teaching. No structure whatsoever.
He is Hot in an older very well travelled; deeply experienced kind of way. He's the most inspiring teacher I've ever had. I wish he had been my dad - he is so much more enlightened by life and really is the kind of person I wish I had for a mentor. more than for just one course. Not enough Gerald Sullivans in the world.
He is a horrid teacher. In his lectures he never stays on topic, and starts talking about random things. His tests are read a book and write about it. In his papers he is not very clear, he has a rude sense of humor. If you get on his bad side then you will see snide remarks coming from him on a daily bases.
I've had Prof. Sullivan for General and Cultural Anthropolgy and once I understood that he wanted me to learn the concepts and how to apply them in our readings it made his class very enjoyable.
Hes okay. Sometimes talks about the same stuff over again. His work is easy. Can be boring in class.
Unique way of teaching the course. Fairly repetative. Make sure you mentally note page numbers for quizzes, otherwise you might not get credit for certain points you want to make.
Class has absolutely no structure, class is repetitive and painfully boring, lectures consist of him rambling about concepts he doesnt take the time out to explain well. Tries too hard to be the "unconventional teacher" by unnecessarily cussing in class and making vulgar remarks. I will say he's passionate about anthro but that's all I'll give him
Sullivan does not use textbooks just books. some of the books are really boring. you take 4 written quizzes and a major term paper. Sullivan can be very boring and like to curse a lot. you will pass the class but he does not like to give full credit on anything. So no easy A is given.
He is a very interesting person, with lots of stories. He reminded me of Dumbledore from Harry Potter, in both looks and character. He swears a lot, but thats not a bad thing for me. He can be repetitive, and not always good at explaining concepts, but overall very interesting teacher. I got a B and I believe thats what I deserved (no easy A's).
taking him now. 1 paper, 12 short writing assigns, 2 office visits, & 4 quizzes. attendance not mandatory but you may miss something important. He is laid back and really cool, class seems easy. I would recommend him to anyone!
This is a great class for doodling. I have 2 notebook filled with his "notes" which constitutes of my drawing in class. Test are straight forward, read the book take the test. His weekly assignments however are very vague. He tries too hard to be a teacher that doesn't care. He cusses all the time. Not very professional.
The Professor has a huge ego and really lacks confidence does not like being corrected and diificult when it comes to understanding the concepts he cant explain.Andrew Lackson like personality.
Refreshingly unconventional approach to teaching. Dr. Sullivan is passionate about anthropology, and wants his students to think for themselves. Humor and language can be considered off color, but your not in high school anymore!! Grow up! If you don't like working for a grade, or to learn find another class.
Had for Cultural Anthropology and will be taking again for General Anth. He tends to wander when answering questions, but is truly an amazing professor if you pay attention and listen. Visiting him out of class is extremely helpful!! Chili pepper, because he needed one.
Some of the books are worth reading, but really if you attend class and pay attention to the lectures, test should be a breeze. if you are easily offended or more or less a BORING person, you probably wont like him or the class. i thought he was wicked funny and cocky, but with reason. I enjoyed the class
This class was pretty easy. We had to read 4 books (No Text Books). We had to write about something that interested us from the book each week. The tests were "explain this quote" Attendance not mandatory, but if you go to class, no need to read. Negative: He's a dirty old man. Nothing is off limits. Class: RATED R. (literally)
While I am continually perplexed at what it is I have actually learned as a result of his lateral style of lecture, I am intrigued enough to take another class with him if opportunity arises. Highly intelligent man and a sexy barefoot hippie to boot. If you're looking for a breeze-thru then look elsewhere. He expects you to earn it.
Please never take this old man class. Even if you smart. Don't do it ever.
Worst class I have ever taken. Very boring and he rambles on about nothing. He even loses himself during his rants then will come back and say does that answer your question? 4 quizzes total about three novels you have read. They just state a quote and it asks you to explain it. Horrible class, and he is a dirty old man. I would never take it again
I can't help but feel that Prof Sullivan doesn't know anything about anthropology. His lectures go nowhere. I have a genuine interest in other cultures and civilizations, but found myself no more knowledgeable about either after taking this class. Anybody who thinks otherwise is smoking the same stuff he is. CC needs more competent anth Professors.
Professor Sullivan is probably one of the best professors I've ever had. He is very interested in what he teaches and incourages you to come talk to him. You get a total of 30 points to visit with him twice. If you're taking anthropology take him!
On one hand, I am trying to decide if I've learned anything. This class is all abstract. There is nothing concrete, no rules, no structure. But Sullivan is awesome. He's been raised all over the world. He's a sexy barefoot hippie, too, for an old man. But if you are easily insulted by use of profanity, DO NOT TAKE HIM. Nothing is Sacred.
Very knowledgeable and challenging ideas. Loved his Cultural Anthropology class.
When the semester began I wasn't a fan him. He seemed arrogant. However as the class went on he grew on me. He can be arrogant, but hell, so can I. Even though I didn't always like it, in retrospect this guy challenged me, which is exactly what he should be doing. Difficult? Yes. Does he go on rants? Yep. Did I actually LEARN anything? Absolutely.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. He goes on rants so many times in class that when it actually comes to learning something it is at about the five till mark when we are about to leave. Does he help out the students? Not at all.
I went in to the class excited and interested in anthropology, but I can honestly say that after the class, I still know next to nothing about the subject. He rambles. He's extremely vague. He loves to tell pointless stories about himself. And his "style" of "teaching" bored me; to random and not enough structure. Would not recommend.
He rambles on and on and on. Some of his stories are interesting but I don't really really learn anything!! I need this class for my major and it was a waste. I really wish the college had more cultural anthropology teachers to choose from.
Weird! but honest and great. Very passionate about his feild of study. Lovs to talk, very honest and straigt forward.. he dislikes BS'ers. But he is fair. I really enjoyed my time in his class.
He does go on w/his stories but they are interesting. Very understanding & willing help if you ask for it. If you have a foot phobia then don't take his class!! He is an old school hippe but he is AWSOME!! He doesn't use a textbook, but has you read 3 books. IF YOU TAKE ANTH TAKE HIM!!! He does make you think outside of the box.
I went into anthropology with such excitement but after the first few weeks i hated it. He rambles on about his life and will tell the exact same story to you verbatim about once a week. The class is extremely boring and he expects you to read like 100 pages a week. The assignments he gives are confusing and difficult. DO NOT take his class.
He was not what I was expecting, however I thoroughly enjoyed the class and will be taking another form him next semester. You are required to read a lot in the course and the material is not always the easiest, but in the end it really helps in understanding. Overall, great teacher.
His stories are very interesting. If you follow the syllabus sometimes he does tell a story more than once but it is only to have you see a different view of the story. Cool laid back hippie dude. If you want to just put your face in a textbook this class is not for you. If you want to talk, think, and expand your mind, take this class!!
Dr. Sullivan does ramble. A lot. But that's okay, because it's just his way. When I took the course, he assigned four books (not textbooks) to go over each field of Anthropology, and every one of them was fantastic. A few I have even reread. He is very keen on hearing your actual opinions, for you to learn by questioning, not listening.
I started this class and i didn't find it intresting we read 3 books and they are very boring we have 3 quizes one for each book. The class was ok its very easy and he rambles about the most boringest things. His class is not mandatory. He walks around the class barefoot. Overall he's ok i wouldn't take it again.
had 5 profs that have changed my life. Jerry is the most recent and was the most influential, by far. only wish I had chosen a long semester; might have made an A, but if I show up to that many 8am classes in a row, it must be good. It's up to the student to divine the connection between lectures and texts. Very useful knowledge for everyone.
Worst class I have ever taken in my life. Professor Sullivan's lectures are unbearably long and he rambles on about random topics that have nothing to do with the books he assigns. The books he assigns are very confusing and intellectual. However, it was probably my easiest class as long as you show up and turn in the writing assignments.
I am thoroughly disappointed by him. His lectures EVERY class do not apply to your three books throughout the semester. His grading criteria is inconsistent. He does not give any hints as to what he looks for in papers or writing assignments. If you appreciate structure and clarity from your professors, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
He challenges you to think, and expects you to be honest and share your thoughts in class and in the papers you write. Lots of writing. People say that his lectures have nothing to do with the material he assigns, but they do. He lectures on the concepts presented, using his colorful life as a way of explaining them in an easy to understand manner.
Professor Sullivan is absolutely brilliant. He is an ex ivy league professor (Notre Dame), who you would be foolish to overlook. Lots of reading (500 pages) over the semester, but the topics are interesting and you will learn so much its ridiculous. I changed my major from Philosophy to Anthropology after taking two courses with him. Do it now.
Prof Sullivan has an odd teaching style; he has you complete readings from the assigned books and then lectures in class over the subjects in the book that he wants you to absorb, but in a really roundabout and at times confusing way. As long as you turn in the writing assignments you will pass
The books are obscure & sometimes difficult to understand. His lectures are long, winding, & difficult to follow. I don't think I'll be leaving this class knowing anything about anthropology. He's also the only anthropology professor at Collin, so there isn't much in the way of choices. Overall I've been highly disappointed.
Wonderful professor with great insight and knowledge. He lectures a lot and can be a little overwhelming at first, but you will learn a ton from him. He very clearly cares about students and is a very fair grader. I would encourage everyone to stick with his classes even if you are overwhelmed by the lectures. There are no tests.
Worst professor I have ever had. Lectures had nothing to do with the reading, mainly just about his life. Which makes it hard to write the papers he wants, because you have to tie in the reading with really vague "concepts" that he talks about in class. Waste of time. Dreaded going to class.
He is a really easy grader just do what he asks. He has a lecture almost every class but he doesn't know what he talking about or his point is getting across so its very hard to understand and connect terms he provides. Also you have to read 3 books for this class, I wouldn't take this class till you transfer endless you absolutely have to.
The lectures are exceptional . You'll read 3 books, so be prepared to read & write! Even if you get behind on reading, just write about everything you've read! It also helped to keep a notebook handy at all times to take notes on his lectures because he spans many subjects on & off topic- but these notes will help on tests/papers!
There were 3 books required for this course, and the one thing that I learned from this semester was about globalization. I had another expectation for Cultural Anthropology class. At times the lectures are on point and the other times I'm not sure what the point of what he said was. Just make sure to do all assignments and you'll pass.
He lectures most of the time. Has interesting lectures sometimes, but usually boring. Easy grader, but lots of reading and papers. Not very clear on the concepts that he covers, as his lectures are impromptu and often repetitive, especially riddled with useless information. The work is easy overall, just don't expect an engaging professor.
Too demanding for a core course. Mini-essays EVERY WEEK. Doesn't state what exactly he wants and then criticizes you for not being specific enough. Not a very tough grader, but has too much to say for each assignment. I once wrote about a personal experience in an assignment, LIKE HE ASKED, but he gave rude feedback and judged me based on that.
Cryptic online course didn't know what in the world he was asking for and likes reading long books that are wildly monotonous. Super nice guy though
Jerry is by far one of the most underappreciated professors at Collin. Majority of complaints he receives are his very assets. He challenges your prior conception of education through ambiguity; cultivating a palpable understanding of life beyond an American outlook. This man has seen more of the world than most care to. Passing him up is a mistake
There are weekly papers over the book that you are supposed to read they must be in APA format. The books that he chooses are boring at best and his lectures are hard to understand.
The prof. expects a lot from this Intro course. Gives a lot to read, in massive amounts. Skip this one unless it's your major. Working people stay far far away. Not here to be a professional anthropologist just want to learn a bit and get credit.
This class is not as bad as it seems, especially if you are interested in Anthropology. The class may have very vague rules on essays and such, but you will come to realize that the vagueness is intentional. Lots of reading, but just keep up with the work and it will be easy. 1 page essays due every week, if you read it will take a max of 45 mins.
Took this class (online) in the first semester of my freshman year. As an adult student (>45), I did not have any preconceived notions of what to expect, though had I had any expectations it would have far exceeded them.
Professor Sullivan gives off the vibe that he knows a lot about what he talks about, and that seems to be true. But as far as teaching what he knows? I've listened to better lectures. He doesn't seem to know how to really drive a point home. And as assignments go, he doesn't know how to use canvas and screws over his students because of it.
Worst professor I have ever had. The syllabus is convoluted and unreadable. He did not show up to class, told us it was our responsibilty to make him teach. His feedback on papers makes no sense and he is not accessable. Lectures are impossible to follow and he moves assignments around. Does not grade anything until the last minute.
I took his class online and it was really difficult. There are 3 books you HAVE to read because you have to write essays over them (like every week). He is a kind and genuine person but when it comes to the quality of your work he expects a lot! Assignments tend to change a lot, so watch for that as well.
The worst professor or just teacher I have ever had. Gives zeros if you mess up on bibliography or will take off points if you misspell things. Is never available to meet and will dodge questions when emailed. Hated every minute of this class.
I love anthropology, but Professor Sullivan makes me never want to take another ANTH class again. He is cocky and rude, as well as unreachable outside of class. He gives zeros if you don't format correctly and grades based on your personal opinions. By far the worst professor I have had at Collin. Save yourself the time and stress. Don't take.
To start is off he is horrible with technology, he doesn't give clear directions at all. I had a zoom meeting with him for directions and he yelled at me for not understanding him. He does email fast though but it will more than likely be a sarcastic answer. I highly recommend taking this class in person and not with him. Horrible person an teacher
Although he is friendly in his way when you email him, it takes a while to respond. The point of teaching is so that you're student learn that's why they are there.
He was really rude (I asked for a 3:30 meeting, at 3:12 he emailed me at your convenience) and he did not bump my 79.7% grade to an 80 so I received a C. He uses older words too and tries to make text as difficult to understand as possible.
I absolutely hated this class. (I retook this semester under a different instructor as I am interested in the topic, but hated Sullivan) He makes the course readings as difficult as possible. He is a very strict grader with the two options being 0% or 100% (I failed the final paper for a comma splice). (I have a 98% in same class with another prof)
Paper-heavy, expect to read multiple books for 2+ papers each week. Recieved straight 50s midway through semester without clear reason. After not receiving help, he didn't divulge his grading rubric to see how to improve future grades. Mandatory individual video calls, and toughly-graded final paper. Take alternate professor for courses if possible
