Definately worth taking, great prof. Learned all 100 students' names.

I took several classes with this guy, he's a very engaging professor. He is one of the best professors I have studied with.
Dr. Roberts is the man! Makes learning chemistry interesting.
Dr. Roberts makes me want to sit up the front of the class, so that i can share his jokes and his personality. chem was actually sort of semi-fun this year, because of him. very cool.
awesome teacher had two semesters...always wants to help students and curves for real
I had this guy for lab in which he teaches in the summer and he was very hard and very mean. I have never had him for lecture so I can't comment on that but avoid at all costs for lab.
Best Chemistry professor at Mason. Able to inject humor into such a dry subject and make it intresting. Compels you to come to class with his great personality.
Dr. Roberts was a great proffessor, he tried to make chemistry, which a very boring subject interesting. He is a teacher who loves their students, and wants to help them, unlike the other chemistry proffessors. Great Teacher, Hard Class!
Hes funny and makes chemistry fun...but you still dont learn anything. His exams are impossible but he does curve a lot cuz everyone fails. He DEF. HAS FAVORITES and hmwk is extra cridet. Take it with Foster but if u cant hes the only other semi good one.
I cringed everyday going to this guys 211 lab a while ago, cause he was so god damn MEAN to all of us. Get a grip dude!
Great professor! Makes chemistry very enjoyable and interesting! But CHEM 211 is not an easy class! The tests are hard, he curves though! I would never change the chemistry teacher!
This professor's teaching sucks! He is really an awesome person, very funny. but not teaching wise, he is not very helpful.
He's a good teacher. Really funny. He doesn't really warm up until the later chapters, and be prepared to teach yourself. That goes for all the teachers, though. I did go to him for help when I had a health issue, and he screwed me on my final grade, but I'm going to get that fixed.
hard to understand, and plays favoritism. lazy and doesn't know the material well himself
chem is just a painful class. exams are horrible too because the hw and quizzes doesn't help prepare much. just best of luck to those who take this class
He is terrible. He does not teach what he tests on and the homework and quizzes are based on the material used in another class, So when you go to take the quizzes you have to study the matieral in your class and the material in another class so in reality you gotta study for 2 classes.
I can't think of a better way to blow college tuition. class is organized into 5% his favorite 95% everyone else. Skips through vital material, uses humor to ingratiate himself but fails to convey critical concepts. May be a cool guy but he isn't a teacher.
Here is the real deal with this guy: he doesn't know what he's teaching(just copies his old notes), plays favorite among students, and doesn't like to be proven wrong. His test are stupid and I do not so bad on them but still hard. You can get a average grade in his class but won't learn anything.
he's a fun teacher but his exams are hard. No matter how hard you study, you just won't do that well unless you LOVE chemistry! If you can get notes from his old students, then you can just focus and pay attention in class. Or, split up who will take notes on which day then copy them!
I'm not saying he's not a good teacher. I always got help when I asked. However his lectures are not too money. You basicly have to self-teach/ self-learn material from the book. But he is a very funny and fair guy. if you work hard in this class and he knows about this, you may count on a good grade.
Definitely plays favoritisms and basically need to study and learn on your own because the exams can cover ANYTHING and it's hard to have to study everything and not knowing what is going to be on the exam. I usually don't have issues of not knowing what is on the exams but in this class I did.
Very nice man. Class mostly organized to let students who already know the material show off by doing problems on the board. We were doing redox reactions the first month of class even though that material isnt covered until end of the 212 class - still not sure why(?) To succeed; ace lab/quizes; show up at his office hours he does cut breaks.
Great teacher. You will have to work, and the class is hard, but so is chemistry. What make's Dr. Roberts stand out among his peers is his willingness to work with you. He is funny in class, and will get to know you if you show a ginuine interest in chemistry. (He also has some great advise about college life itself)
The best. Very encouraging. After most of the class did poorly on the 2nd exam(I did REAL BAD), he didn't discourage us from pursuing a field in sciences but rather let us have a retake. I did exceptionally better on the retake. Also he doesn't have favorites, but likes to get to know people. Everyone one can be a "Favorite", JUST SIT UP FRONT
good teacher, I did well on his first exam, the second was out of a different class/book or something, it was rediculous, but the retake helped out alot. He makes class enjoyable, its very hard to fall asleep because he keeps us entertained. I would definately reccomend him to anyone taking 212!!
Sure, he was a nice guy and willing to help students, BUT, I absolutely abhorred his teaching style. He liked to write his notes as he went along, and, because of that, I found his notes far from cohesive and very disorganized, which made it hard to study them in your notebook as they weren't concise. I recommend Dr. Foster-much better & organized.
Any chemistry class is going to be challenging but if you are not a chemistry major you should take this class. Make sure you get in a study group and meet with the professor and he is very helpful and he KNOWS who is in study groups or not.. Be sure to buy the ACS study guide early way before the final to help you with the final exam..
awesome professor! the best!!!!
this guy is a true playa!
awesome teacher. study your ass off. if you fail the exams, like i did, talk to him for help.
HARD! HARD! HARD! You will learn to read and study like u've never done b4. Definitely organize study groups and come to class! As much as I'm whining about this class rite now, I know in the long haul it's going to benefit me when I'm taking the PCAT and Organic Chem. So, we'll see how it goes when I cross the finish line the end of May.
Definitely not a class you can fly through. GO TO LECTURES and GET A STUDY GROUP! However, he is a clear teacher, and if you still don't get it at the end of class he's more than happy to help some more. He's very amusing; he makes us laugh when we're tense before/after exams or falling asleep in class. All around great teacher and great guy!
Class is hard, but it's chemistry, which isn't really a subject that's meant to be easy. He's a fair proffesor who teaches the material well and is pretty entertaining during class.
I love him. Funny. Has great note-writing stucture so copy everything EXACTLY how it is so you can understand your notes when reviewing. ALWAYS study from the book. Do his old exams, some questions are the same as the present exam. Final is standardized but studying his organic chem helps! The final from now on will include 211 as well. Sucks.
good teacher even though i hate chem. forget about studying for the final cause its a standard exam and freaking hard.
i liked him, even tho i hated chem! nice guy, pretty funny, lectures were not boring but exams were hard. curves alooooot. i would take him.
Dr. Weatherspoon was great! The course is tough and moves quickly, particularly for a non-chemistry major. Prof knows the material and he cares about the students. But he insists you learn the material. There is no easy way through the course, but he will make himself available to help as often as you make the time to drop by his office.
His class is really funny and interesting. Take him, but be ready to read supplement his notes with the text book. Also practice most of the examples from class before exam and know things he classifies as star, star, star.
Prof Weatherspoon is an excellent professor. He tries to teach and interest students in chemical science within biology.
weatherspoon is best professor and i bet you will enjoy his class. he is extremely funny guy, you wont able to stop laughing when you will see his facial expression. he is cute. however, for the class, study study study only his notes and only those problems which you will do in class. attend class b/c it will benefit you everytime u take exam.
Always on edge in class because he likes to call on random people in class to answer problems, which can be nerve-wracking. Curves at end of course and gives EC opportunities, which you should do given the chance. Attending class is beneficial for his exams since he doesnt use computerized exams like other profs.
Great professor but man he is hard lol his class averages are around 60-70's lol sometimes even below
Good teacher, just a little hard. Go to class, do practice problems, and study what he writes. The final is not made by him so do not worry about it. It is a hard exam, but not much math, all conceptual questions.
EASY. JUST TAKE NOTES!
He is NOT an easy teacher. Unless you are a genius, I would recommend you taking another professor. It's almost like he doesn't want you to understand with some of the ways he tries to explain things. He may be funny, but that isn't reason enough to take an awful professor. BTW, I had an A in Chem 211. (I'm not j/ bashing him for fun.)
He's a really hard teacher. He uses big words and stuff to show you how smart he is and is not hte greatest teacher. His ***'s never show up on tests like he says. Sometimes his class note problems do though. I dont reccomend him at all (This is coming from somone who has a good GPA by the way..)
Wspoon is too intelligent for the good of the students. He speaks in such complicated chemical/ chemistry words that make no sence. His exams I'm talking about 10 questions on the whole exam avg on exam 60-65. The final exam was ridiculously out of proportion from what he taught the whole semestor. You final grade is based on how much he likes you!
Dr. Weatherspoon is fun and engaging but he will challenge your mind. Sit up front, read the book, pay attention and do your homework and you'll be fine.
The worst professor!!!!
Best proffesor in the GMU chem dept. He is tough but he will make you understand the material and prepare you well for the final. Just remember to sit up front and always come to class because he handwrites notes. Also does examples on the board and makes the class do them as well which really helps on the tests aswell.Tests are hard but take him!
I RECOMMEND taking him. go to class + make sure to take notes - it helps when u study for test. he jokes in class- so class is always fun and interesting! this is a hard class and his test are HARD! also had him for lab- he's really really strict on lab reports!! he is one of the best chem professor!!! =)
he is really really really bad instructor for lab and lecture both....take other professors..
Dr. Weatherspoon is exceptionally fun to learn from but goes on a lot of tangents. If you do not read the book prior to attending class you will fail. He gets to know EVERY student and will notice if you do not attend. Come prepared! He gives extra points during class time if you can solve challenging bonus questions.
Professor Weatherspoon is exceptional. His lectures are very clear, and he places large emphasis on topics he will test directly. He is very willing to help his students, and his tests are very fair. GO TO CLASS! Take good notes, and do your HW. His combination of humor, encouraged participation, and intellect make his lectures very worthwhile
His tests have nothing to do with what we learn in class...you might as well not even study because you will fail it anyways...the averages are low so if you get a 60% you are proud of yourself...he wastes class time letting students try the examples that no one knows how to do when he could have just explained it and saved time...
one of the best professor. hard hard lab instructor and hard lecture professor but if you do the work then you'll do fine. make sure you go to class!!!!! and do the homework!!! chem is hard in general so you do have to work your butt off.
Emphasizes participation during lectures; he has a class roster with him each class that he uses to call on students. Lectures are quite interesting, he goes beyond textbook material to address applications, and helpful, because he works through problems on the board. Engaging speaker, decent person, and has expectations of his students.
He is a really great teacher! If you do the ARIS homework and pay attention in class you will do well. You will definitely need the text book to do the aris homework. His tests were really hard but were very short. Use his notes and examples along with the aris stuff to study!! You have to attend class! There are also extra credit prolems in class.
Had him for lab in the summer, and he was very UNCLEAR and MEAN. So intimidating and unapproachable.
Alright... So this class is HARD! Chemistry is horrible. But he knows what he is talking about. If you do not take notes and try to pay attention in class---- You are doomed! He is a very nice guy and makes class fun, but if you do not understand the information, go to the Tutoring Center! ASAP... No time to fall behind.
Dr. Weatherspoon is the Best Prof. He is Hard, no doubt, but he makes you understand the concepts rather than just memorizing them. All of his tests had an average of 40 percent; but work hard on doing the homework and the quizzes on Aris and you will get a decent grade.ATTEND THE CLASS EVERY TIME!!
Dr. Weatherspoon is a WONDERFUL teacher. His class is not that easy and you have to take notes. Do the ARIS problems. If you have any questions, go to the tutoring center. He memorizes the names of all his students. Tests are multiple choice and you HAVE to study. He really teaches the material well. If you wanna learn gen chem, TAKE HIM.
No lie, this class is tough. If you're not willing to put in the effort, don't even try. You need to come to every class, take notes and pay attention to even have a shot at beating the curve on the exams. Dr. Weatherspoon was a great professor- entertaining, engaging and helpful. Take him for chem, if you don't...good luck teaching yourself.
Weatherspoon is by far one of the best chem professors at Mason. Actually cares if his students are learning. Great in lecture. Not going to lie though: TOUGH exams but he hands out practice ones before hand and curves. Do the homework, GO TO CLASS, and sit in front. Choose him over Schreifels if you actually care about your education.
I had Dr.Weatherspoon for Chem 211 and 212 back in 2000 and 01. Back then He was Dr.Roberts. He was very intimadating, his exams brutal. He went on to become my mentor and someone I could always go to if I needed anything. His support and encouragement helped me get into medical school and I am now a doctor because of his unwavering support.
I second the poster directly below mine. I also had him a few years back and he pushes his students to become the best they can be. Encourages them to study science. I am now in law school after obtaining my MS in Chem at a diff university. Students posting reviews years after taking his class is a testament to the kind of person/teacher he is!
I hated Chemistry until I took Professor Weatherspoon course! He is a WONDERFUL teacher! If it was not for him, I would have failed the course. If you are struggling, go to his office hours, he really cares about his students and is there to help!! His class is hard but remember it's CHEMISTRY! He gives great advice and tips for "after undergrad"
He also makes Chemistry interesting! Attend every class and DO NOT BE AFRAID if he calls on you in class! He engages his students in lecture and he makes his lectures entertaining. Time flies by quick in his class and actually LEARN chemistry! He is THE BEST CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR AT GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY!!! I would recommend him any day over anyone
His exams on fall 2011 were extremellyy Hard! Averages were 30-40 % no matter how hard you study! You need to study by yourself since he doesn't cover much of the topics in class. Especially for ACS, it's all concepts from the textbook which he never mentioned... but ACS was easy compared to his Exams. The good thing about him is that he interacts
great professor. intense class. calls on people but knows all his students. he cares about his students. tests were hard but curved. mot people received As and Bs. one of the BEST professors IVE HAD!!
I've never had a professor who was so rude. He made fun of students who came in late or answer questions wrong. Making fun of people is never funny especially when you are an Associate Professor & Associate Chair. You need to be professional and I know its rude if students come in late but its ultimately the students choice to come or not.
His lectures are interesting because he's really funny. Attendance is not mandatory but you will want to go because his tests are scary hard and all his notes are hand written from him on the board.
The average on every exam was between a 20 and 30%...he doesn't use powerpoints. Nice guy (except if you're late to his class) but stay away if you want any grade higher than a C
He is a very hard professor, and you have to work extremely hard if you want a grade higher than a C. But, he is one of my favorite professors due to the fact that he is always willing to help and his class was very stimulating
Definitely one of the best chemistry teachers at Mason. His class is really tough, but if you keep up with reading & attend lectures, you will do well. He is also very willing to help students & rewards those who actually put in the work. Definitely recommend!
Great Professor. Super hard class. Attendance is not mandatory, but it helps if you go. The projects are hard, but they are group projects, so a good grade is not hard to achieve. The exams are very hard as well, but a curve is set at the end of the course.
Dr. Weatherspoon is the most interesting and captivating lecturer I have ever had. His class is difficult, but if you put in the time and effort you will do well, as he makes sure you learn not just memorize.
this class is TOUGH.Go to class, his class problems are on the tests and he notices if you are absent. Do problems in the book for practice. HW problems arent very helpfull, more just tedious. Get in a study group and go to his office hours. Make him see the effort you put in, it will be rewarded. Enjoyed his class, boring subject. STUDY AND PRAY
Brilliant guy, terrible teacher. Probably teaches/lectures 20% of the material in the text, but expects you to know it all for the tests. Average grade on the tests were between 30-40, seriously. You will have to work extremely hard and still probably won't learn much. I urge you not to take his class even though I got an A.
I will start by saying that I am no chemistry major, and I more or less despise the subject. Dr. Weatherspoon's class terrified me.He randomly calls on people to answer questions, and his tests are near impossible even after holing up in the library for hours on end studying. Suggestion: wear neutral colors to class to blend in and not be targeted
first, very hard tests. my class had average of 30-40%. if you're gonna take him, attendance is mandatory because he covers a lot of info in one class. He explains very well, and you actually learn chemistry in his class:)
I hate this person, he is the worst individual I have ever come across. Every single test we got I got terrible, i studied so hard but there were too many variables invovled. my friends got 12's and i know the semester isnt over but i am sure to fail this class, this will be the first college class ill fail. I want this professor to be removed!!!!!
I enjoyed Dr. Weatherspoon's class. Yes his exams are difficult, and yes he calls on people randomly. All that aside, he is an amazing instructor. You will learn everything you need to know for the exams if you just pay attention and take notes. I wish more professors taught like him. I did feel that the homework was unnecessary and not helpful tho
Hardest class I've ever taken. He's a great teacher and his tests may be hard, but put effort into learning the material and you'll be fine. And by effort I mean if you need help go to him, get a tutor, read, and do the homework. You'll actually learn something.
Take him if you want to learn chem. He is the best teacher in the chemistry department.
While his class was EXTREMELY difficult, it is doable. I'm horrible with Chemistry and I still got out with a B. Don't worry too much about the low test averages, he balances everything out. Do ALL the homework, study for the tests as much as possible, and you'll be fine
not a very nice human being I've had the displeasure to meet. Sarcastic, unprofessional, cocky... He belongs in a lab, definitely not in an academic setting. He knows his stuff but really doesn't need to be teaching.
He is RUDE!!! He will make you wait 2 hours for his office hour and finally show up and tells you, "I can't help you now, I need to get lunch!" After 2 hours of waiting, really? Avoid him at all cost!!!!
Everything said about him is true. Now if you are not naturally great in chemistry, please do yourself a favor and take chem 212 with Schreifles. If your GPA means anything at all to you. If not be prepared to study endlessly and see very improvement in your test scores. His practice exams have absolutely nothing to do with his test. Good luck.
Not an amazing teacher, but the best out of all Chem 212 professors. I'm horrible at chemistry but I went to class, did the online hw and read the textbook and did just fine. Definitely read the textbook before coming to lecture and participate! He is big on helping out the students that participate.
Chem 212 with Weatherspoon will give your brain a major workout. Weatherspoon is not going to make anything easy for you just to give you an A. He wants you to actually LEARN it and not just memorize it enough to pass an exam. Do the homework, it helps. Don't go to his office hours if you want him to spoon feed you information, go with a purpose.
WARNING: Coming into his class, my major was Medical Technology. The first day of class I had with Weatherspoon was SO bad that I immediately changed my major directly after class. He ruined any and all interest I had in science. Yes, it was THAT bad. Avoid this teacher like the plague if you have any desire to pass!
Impossible to pass the test, accept it. However, he moves his grading scale around so a 60 becomes a C, 70 a B and so forth (essentially curving) which is great. Do the online homework and go to lecture!! take lots of notes and try to participate in class and you'll do fine. and the textbook problems will be your best friend (test problems!!!)
Doesn't care about students. Unwilling to help or explain. Makes it impossible to meet with him if you are a busy student and work a job. Expects you to call out just to meet with him. Yeah right. I wouldn't take him, even if it was the only class I could take.
Engaging, funny lectures, often has students work on the board or in groups to solve problems. He lectures on the harder portions of the chapter, but you need to read the chapter over and pick up the easier things he didnt cover. The homework and previous exams will guide you in what you need to know for the exams. He went out of his was to help me
If youre a chemistry major do not come to Mason. This school will suck the passion right out of you. Its not just because the courses are hard but the teachers suck! Weatherspoon is actually one of the best when you compare him to schriefles, slayden, honeychuck the list goes on. Trust me do not be a chem major at mason for your sake..
He is a wonderful lecturer, really delivers the information so that you don't even feel like you're learning. He is sarcastic but his humor is out of the world, if you're into wit take him! He's great!
I totally disagree with the people making negative comments about Dr. Weatherspoon. I did only have him for lab but he's taught my lecture before and he's excellent to work with. He's always more than willing to give you a hand and he genuinely wants to make sure his students leave understanding and feeling comfortable with chemistry. Recommend!
he is a terrible person with terrible intentions. He is a nasty person overall. he will make you hate chemistry and very good at manipulating students minds. whenever i use to see him, id walk the opposite direction so i wouldn't have to see his ugly face. STAY AWAY.
He is an awful person. He acts super friendly and is very social, and will remember who you are. But he actually doesn't care to teach beyond the surface introduction of the topics and lies. I got an A in 211 and a B in 212, but he expects you to magic up concepts that he doesn't teach in class during exams that are magnitudes harder than HW.
I am currently taking him and he is difficult, yes. But he wants you to learn. Believe me when I say he is a good man with good intentions. Do not take him if you want an easy A. Take him if you want to master chemistry. Lastly, go to lecture and pay attention to everything he says in class. What is covered in class is what you need the most. -Y.Z.
I had Dr. Weatherspoon back in 2014 for 212. Good professor. If you want an easy A, choose someone else. If you want to learn, there's no one better.
Maybe I didn't get the grade I wanted but that doesn't degrade profs teaching ability! He will TEACH you chemistry. Sweet personality, he made jokes in class everyday. He wants you to pass so give him that effort, visit LA hours (they helped) and study notes. His curve usually save your grade and COME to class, he remembers faces/name so never skip

His class is definitely hard. You need to put in the effort, as in, go to all of the LA's office hours and READ YOUR TEXTBOOK. DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS. Sit in the very front of the class because he'll remember your name and he knows who's trying or not. For those who want an A, you must prep for the exam a few weeks ahead. Great humor and is very real
Out of all the teachers in the Chemistry department, Weatherspoon is probably the one that will actually teach you. Do not go to Weatherspoon and expect an easy A, go to him to learn and master Chemistry. I had Schreifels and almost failed Chemistry; but Dr. Weatherspoon gave me the motivation I needed to do well in school. I highly recommend him.
Dr. Weatherspoon's class is pretty challenging but the grade distribution is really in favor of the students. Two assessments you take in the computer lab, three exams, the final, and homework go into your grade. Aim to take the two assessments, get full credit on homework, and try to get the average (he curves exams) on exams and you'll be fine!
He is definitely one of my top 3 fav. professors. I hate Chem, as its one of my worst subjects, but he made it more than bearable. He actually cares about his students. As long as you put in the effort, he will go far to help his students succeed. He is a tough grader, but if you follow directions you'll be fine. Key point: follow directions!!
If you want to pass chem, he's the best choice unless you're taking honors. Everything you need to know are in his lectures so do attend the class. He does call on people in class but it's ok to say you don't know because we're there to learn after all. He's overall a great professor imo.
Lots of self study, he will notice if u dont attend. Tough grader, but also curves. Study practice tests, and read each chapter. NO PP are given, so lots of reading. final is cumalitive. He calls on students during lecture, knows every1 by name so you will get called out at random. You will also learn but go to class prepared.
I thought this Dr. W was horrible. Very unpleasant person. Skip him. He should not be teaching.
I hope it is not too late for you to find a different professor. My GPA was a 3.9 and I got a C. If you want to blow your GPA and have to put up with a very nasty man, have at it. He should stick to research and stay away from students to which he seems incapable of tolerating.
I have always had a strong GPA and worked very very hard to pull a B. I also found Dr. Weatherspoon to be intolerable and condescending towards students. It seems that many of the professors in the chemistry department are the same. Find someone else.
I agree with the comments below. He is a nasty person and will make you hate chemistry.
It is almost like he wants to destroy your interest in chemistry and your GPA. He is rude and disparaging. I would avoid him at every cost.
Really unpleasant. Should not be teaching.
If he is the "best choice", I don't want to know how bad the other choices are. Stay away from him. He has a high opinion of himself shared by only him.
Really unpleasant. Should not be teaching.
Wow you shouldn't have to feel scared to go to class but this unapproachable man sure creates that environment. Had him for lab chem 211, one of the most rudest and unapproachable people i've ever met. When I took Dr. Mose for 212 lab it was a completely better experience.
Worst part is that he is the department chair, a real disservice. I think he treats everyone poorly so don't take it personally, but don't take his class. GMU needs to get rid of him.
I don't think he is a happy person and it shows. He is downright abusive towards students. To make matters worse, he is in charge of the chemistry department. I have not met one student with good things to say about him or the chemistry department.
Personally, I can't stand this man. He didn't abide by his own syllabus and constantly changed the rules for lab during the semester. His syllabus never mentioned quizzes and yet our class was given a pop quiz FOR A GRADE. He also noticed too many people were talking in lab so he instituted a silent lab where you talk you fail. This man irks me.
He is the opposite of a good professor. Not clear. No feedback. Moody.
Nasty. Nasty. Nasty. He should teach high school so his no talking policy would increase morale there too---NOT! I wish I read these comment before I signed up for his class.
In my opinion, this prof is in a constant bad mood and takes it out on his students. No one would ever ask him a question because that is how he is,
Not caring. Gives little constructive feedback. Students do not respect him. Not hilarious. The worst of the worst. Please, fire this man.
He's a piece of work. Makes you rethink your interest.
This prof has a high opinion of himself. The entire class was miserable. Do not take him. You will be sorry. He is hostile and unapproachable.
Great lecturer thus far, first exam is coming up next week for me so will update y'all cause these ratings were so misleading upon entering the course. He can teach very well and is very nice thus far (maybe its cause he is nicer to his 7:30 am class tho)
Dr. Weatherspoon is honestly an amazing lecturer. He can be very strict with grading, but he is definitely fair. If you are serious about learning chemistry, then he is the one you should take. Exams are very difficult, so you need to study very frequently every week. I wish he teaches organic chemistry.
I think he is the person who decides to separate the lab grade from the lecture. Because of this all of the GTAS' are grading very harshly so there can be a curve of 80%. They fear that they would be scolded if they give lots of points. Most of the students are getting B because of their weird grading, and rarely some students with an A.
So here's my second review! Like said before, the reviews for this class before this spring 2017 were misleading. Weatherspoon is the best to take for gen chem 2 hands down. His lectures are straightforward. His exam only covers material that he has lectured in class. Study in class notes and the practice exam.
If you are a serious student, he is the best professor.
Be careful of professor's writing reviews because the students finally have a voice here and they don't like it. He is a rude, condescending, abusive, with an inflated ego. I would find anyone else but him.
It is impossible to get an A in his class. He curves in a weird way, likes grades are normalized. Students below average can get C, but students like me who are well above average are still getting a B. You literally have to sky rocket his hard exams for an A. I definitely not recommend him due to his hard exams and weird curving.
Even though his exams are difficult, but it is partial credit so the few points you get from the questions are helpful rather than getting the whole question wrong. His lectures are full of energy, and helps me wake up at 7:30 AM (surprisingly). He is very helpful when you don't understand something, and genuinely cares about how you are doing.
Enthusiastic, clear, concise, funny, thorough, methodical... and extremely demanding of his students, both in-class and out. Honestly, though, if he weren't all of those things, there's no way I'd wake up at 6AM for a 7:30 class. Checks attendance randomly. HW (MH Connect) takes time. Exams similar to examples in-class. Study well ahead of time.
After a semester with Dr. Weatherspoon, I found he really cares for his students and expects alot from them since he wants them to do well in the future. He can be a bit of a germaphobe and grumpy in the beginning of class since it is at 7:30 am. His exams are hard but do textbook probs and review notes and you should be fine. He's actually funny.
Not sure if this is same horrible professor we had the displeasure of having. Grumpy and rude and zero sense of humor, yes.
Doesn't curve upto 70%, just around 60%. But, most of the students in his class doesn't fail even though the average is curve upto 60%. The way he curves will make more people pass, but it will make wayyy lot hard for students on the top to get an A. Pre-Med and Pre-Dental students think about your dreams, want an A or just pass and ruin your dream
It's almost too difficult to get an A in this class. You could be a great normal student that deserves a B+ or higher for the class but still get a C for not being the 1-5 students in a 86 student class that gets an A. He makes general chemistry 2 much harder than it has to be. I went in thinking "I'll master gen chem with him" but to what extent..
Excellent professor. Intellectually stimulating and made me care a lot more about chemistry than I thought possible. He understands that most kids just want to pass by doing the bare minimum and he won't have it. If you aren't willing to spend time learning the material then you should probably just change your major as Dr. Weatherspoon suggests.
This was supposed to be Gen Chem 2, just an upgrade level of Gen Chem 1 and more calculation based. This guy took this undergrad Gen Chem 2 to whole another level. He thinks you don't deserve an A until you are on the sky. PHD degree has destroyed common sense in this guy. This class is not that much tough that only around 4 to 5 students deserve A
Very simple. If you want an easy grade, you shouldn't take him. If you actually want to learn, he's your professor.
Mason's chem Labs is ridiculous. The Lab manual didn't had any detail explanations of how to do calculations for the experiments. In his eyes, there is no difference between a student like me who got 91% and students who are around low 70% because he will give B to everyone. You will not get an A if you have 91%, but will get a B if you have 73%.
The best lecturer ever. He explains everything crystal clear that everyone can understand him. The only thing I didn't like about his was his being strict and very difficult exam, but not a big deal since you can do well as long as you frequently practice and review his notes.
As I first read the reviews below, I thought this class was going to be a suicide. When I actually took the class, I was brown away by realizing how wonderful professor he was. Dr. Weatherspoon is known to have earned excellence teaching reward and I cannot deny it. His lectures were so extraordinarily clear that he did not cease to amaze me.
A great professor!
Very very challenging professor. Honestly he is an okay man but his grading is very rough and at some parts unreasonable. Don't miss any class at all because he doesn't post any class materials on blackboard.
Dr. Weatherspoon is the best professor! He writes on the board and he explains very well. I couldn't find any professor who could teach as well as he could. He challenges you, but he's not doing it without any reason. Will take him again if I have a chance. Give this guy a medal.
Dr. Weatherspoon is a really good professor. Take him whenever you have a chance before he's gone.
AVOID! Worst decision of my undergrad career to take his class...I regret not taking anyone else. Only a few out of a 100 person class get an A which is ridiculous. Would give practice problems but wouldn't explain the process. He judges students way more than a normal professor would care to. Gen Chem 2 should've never been this difficult
If you want to take him, good luck. His goal is to fail as many people as possible. I took this guy and rightfully dropped out as I realized how much this class is difficult. I know 11 people in this class and they all got an F. Very unprofessional as well (He yells at you)
One of the most uncaring, mean, and strict grader I've ever had. His exams are also extremely brutal. No test makeup for any reasons. He explains well and he will force you to learn every single thing in depth (Which is good), but you will walk out with a bad grade. This class has the potential to be a GPA killer. Definitely avoid if possible.
very sad to read such harsh reviews but they are true. not sure why someone wants to crush the soul of any student. they need better chem professors that want students to succeed.
Pros: A really good lecturer, wants students to be diligent, tries to engage class Cons: Very strict about particular things, very hard exams, won't excuse you for not doing what he wants
It's simple. Don't take Weatherspoon. He loves the subject, but his class is incredible hard. There are no second chances in his class. All tests are cumulative and more than 50% of the class fails. The rest are either taking it the second time or teach them selves.
Dr. Gerald is the man! Makes the learning chemistry interesting and makes us laugh every class.
Most difficult class I have ever taken. Barely passed even though I spent most of my time doing chemistry.
He's definitely good at teaching, but he's still a bad professor. He is too strict with class policies and is very stingy with grades. Exams are super tough and they are beyond the example and practice problems. He does not response to email and he's only willing to help you for 15 minutes. He doesn't really care if students do well in class.
Strictest guy ever
Wouldn't recommend this class to anyone. If you don't like to be called on, then you won't like him because he calls everyone out. He randomly added in-class discussion to the syllabus mid-semester, so grades were surprisingly low. He's very intimidating and strict. I saw his rating and ignored it; learn from my mistake. Cant stress it enough. 0/10
For a 7:30AM class, he was very energized and hilarious during lectures. He gives homework to lift up your grade. He is the head chair of the department, so his exams were going to be somewhat difficult. He is the most knowledgeable professor, so he knows what he is talking about. No power point, as his method actually helps me learn during class.
Weatherspoon is the man! Makes Chemistry 1 very fun and also engaging! I recommend everyone to take this class. I had to consistently work hard everyday for the quizzes/exams. They are not hard. Usually people are lazy but this class is not impossible!!
The best chemistry class I have taken -better than the previous college I went to. This class tested me whether I should continue my major or not. It was quite a challenging class, but I learned to be very persistent and to work hard. I improved every month and never gave up. Ended up with a 96%. Thanks Weatherspoon!!
Busy professor (considering he is also the chair!) but if you put in the work, participate/ask questions, show up, take the practice exams, then you will not have a problem passing this class and excelling. He does not do death by ppt which is a bonus - he writes notes as he teaches, giving students the opportunity to take detailed notes.
Amazing professor and really opened my eyes to my future. I was initially a pre med student but due to the tough exams he give out I all of a sudden gave up my doctor dreams! I decided to become a toothpaste chemist instead. Thanks Weatherspoon!
What can I say... He is rude and arrogant. If students are confused, he gets upset. He will randomly call on people, give pop quizzes, and his exams are tough. Weekly homework online.
Kinda funny but mostly annoying. He likes to put examples on the board and not solve them. He will get on your nerves and likes to be reffered to as Gerry boy.
never in a million years would i ever take his class again. If you gave me me, all the world's money, I still wouldn't take his class. avoid if possible. he will make your semester miserable.
Today in class, when some students asked him to explain how to solve an example problem, he just stared at us. He looked so disappointed and was basically flabbergasted that we would even ask that. Avoid him at all costs. He will ruin your life, he will destroy your GPA, and your hopes and dreams. AVOID please.
DOESNT MATTER WHICH SECTION HE TEACHES, AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!! STOP SIGNING UP FOR HIM!! I have not heard even a single good thing about him. He wants to fail students. Despises premeds and makes his class absolutely difficult to pass. If you end up with him, switch or take chem at NOVA. You will thank me. If not, ur setting urself up for failure
He is inconsiderate, please avoid him. He will not make your life easier. He is terrible.
lazy and unprofessional. loves to play favorites at the cost of a positive learning environment
i wouldnt spend a other second with him if i was offered a million dollars!
picks on people randomly, gives out pop quizzes, a really UNORGANIZED way of teaching, gave out examples to solve, but moves on without going through the problem. Would constantly change the due date of the homework as well (which never aligned with what was being discussed in class). Ppl thought he was funny, I thought he was a little arrogant.
terrible, terrible professor. So clearly disregards the needs of his students. He puts his favorite students on pedestals while blatantly disrespecting his other students.
I'd rather change universities than spend another minute in his class. Pure agony. I wonder why GMU chem has a bad reputation..
what do I even say? do not take this guy. he needs more bad reviews
One of the most infurating professors I've had at gmu. Took the class my sophmore year and every exam would be a puzzle even if you attended most to all lectures. One exam had the class average around the forties and he pointed out that since one person was able to get a B, the test was considered takeable. If you enjoy peace dont take him.
Avoid this professor if you value your sanity. He's disorganized, plays favorites, and makes exams unnecessarily difficult. However, Unstuck AI proved helpful for preparing. Overall, a frustrating experience.
Do not take this professor for chemistry. He plays favorites, is dishonest about what is on exams and what their layout will be, expects you to know everything, blames students for the test class average being a 30, and will not finish the handwritten questions he gives during lecture.
HE'S SICKKKKK. had to drop after the first week because I would rather be set behind than take his class. from the first class he assumes you know what you're doing. Writes random equations on the board and flips it before you can finish writing. He doesn't post ANY notes or study guides at all so you can "attend class." will publicly call you out
do not take him. Second time taking this course and I did even worse than before. He plays favorites and doesn't help students himself (sends his favorites to do it). Exam averages were always less than 50% and takes off points if there are no units. His communication skills are lacking, so unless you can talk to him irl, do not expect a response.
Expect to teach yourself outside of class but to be fair that's just how college works if you want good grades. sit in the front 3 rows to get any help, I promise the "embarrassment" of being in the front is less than the embarrassment of failing the class.
Lectures don't cover all the content so do the text book reading (or at least skim) to make sure you don't miss anything. Lectures are mainly formatted as explanations of the core/more complicated concepts along with examples and practice problems that are done as a class. If you don't show up to class you will fail, good attendance is crucial.
Going into Dr. Weatherspoon's class, I thought he was this mean guy who picked favorites. Yes, on the first day of class, he used this scare tactic, but it did not work for me because I was up for the challenge. He is a tough professor, but who isn't when they want to see their students succeed!
professor Weatherspoon was one of the best professors I have had. As long as you put in the effort into understanding the concept and understanding the example problem he gives in class you will be fine. just start from there. Office hours make a difference he is very generous with his time. your grade depends on your class rank keep that in mind!!
