Get this woman a cooking show! Very Christing CUshing
The easiest teacher at McGill. Gave me marks for effot (I'm serious)
Teaching method similar to 3rd grade: memorize bullets on board, spit info back
Very nice, but too much memorization required
One must memorize content verbatim; don't put things into your own words!
really boring and the question weight in the tests were retarded.
Quite left of center but without the sophistication
she's ridiculous
She's a little hard to get used to at the start, and doesn't have much respect for lowly students' opinions, but she gets friendlier. She's also really interesting and knowledgeable. Accept her methods and you will learn tons.
A funny funny lady. Was an awesome prof who made things clear but memorization work is key. Make sure you stay for her opinions on Haitian rum - and her perm makes it worth while as well.
She's a really good teacher. There's a lot of memorization involved but she explains everything well. I really like her class.
Boring classes. A nasty mid-term test.
sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo hot
Took 400-level geog of developing countries, and I learned things I've never forgotten. I thought her lectures and readings were fascinating, if you like the topic.
Somewhat boring; whole class consists of taking down notes she projects and then memorizing them; but at least she's pretty friendly, knowledgeable, straightforward
Her lectures are very informative and clear; if you go to class and take notes you will do well on the exams, but she is SO not willing to answer questions in class and is actually pretty rude to students who try to ask her questions.
She is a very good, clear teacher; it's just unfortunate the material is so boring. However, it is an easy mark if you memorize all the class notes (word for word), because they are all that the test covers. No creativity required, just time for studying.
I like her classes.. I think the materials are interesting and she presented them clearly. No memorization needed if you understand them.. Hopefully the exam is like that..
good teacher - interesting insights - i like that she presents all the views.
Although I found the class easy, I could not stand this professor. She never answered anyone's questions, she'd laugh at herself over stupid things, I just found her annoying beyond belief.
tough. but fair.
Thank you.
i love this course, but tricky exam.
She's great! Funny, interesting, amusing, and intelligent. Don't try and get her off track though, you'll regret it.
Bad professor. Is rude to anyone who disagrees with her. Allows for no interpretation even though its a 400-level course. Only likes regurgitation. Won't make time for students outside of class.
The most annoyingly evil woman ever. If you question something in class she is quite rude. She is biased with work once she knows you. Be prepared to have everything re-evaluated. Waste of time.
She looks like the cat lady in Jeepers Creepers, but is very interesting. I think she should teach the class alone. Doc Mok is interesting and all, but usually gives these weird analogies and stories.
We have our first test tom, but just to go back on the previous statement i made a while ago, she is still a very nice lady, unlike the private benjamin leut look, which is so entertaining to watch every MWF
Not impressed at all! If you know how to memorize all HER notes, and don't interpret on your own, you'll do very well. She left no room for personal engagement and truthfully, I thought her insight was limited!
I entered this class with no interest whatsoever but I found it surprisingly engaging. It's easy as long as you attend all the lectures, as 90% of the tests are based on class-notes. She's very helpful if you go to her office and ask questions on your personal time!
Nice and friendly professor, BUT the key to success in her classes is to agree with HER point of view on the issues in question. She's NOT open to new concepts nor opposing perspectives, even if you have reputable sources to back them up. Therefore, if you do things HER WAY...you'll get your A-.
Average professor who teaches her classes the same way year after year. Unfortunetly, if you need help, her Teaching Assistants (T.A.) are NOT of much help...not only do they have limited office hours, they are inconsistent with their grading (Fall 2004 semester).
Great teacher. Always willing to help if you need it. I definitely recommend this class
Always has time for her students and has interesting stats and videos to show. As for tests, as I long as you show up for class and take down her class notes (and study / memorize them of course!), I'd doubt that you'll fail this class...or any other courses that she teaches. :o)
Very poor professor. Ridiculously hard marker as well. Do not take this class, Mok is no better, and the 930 time slot doesnt make things any better. USE WEBCT for gods sake too. Notes are useful, but hard to comprehend because you are scribbling notes while she tells important things.
Amazing teacher, ver devoted to her students, very fair (but challenging) exams. Lots of interesting stories and insights. I wish all my yeachers where like her
Never has time to answer questions in class. Divide and rule! No understanding necessary to pass her exams : just memorize EVERY overhead and you'll get it. Is that learning? CAn't listen to what she explains since you're busy copying the overheads that she won't put on webCT. Awful class.
It is best to stay at home an d read the economiste as it seems to be her bible. She does not rely on any other sources. Very conservative and not open minded enough to realize there might be something else than her own opinion. Harsh marking
You ask for a clarification of what a word means, and she says come to her after class. Proves it's not about the learning but about the notes for her. Which is depressing, but she's still a nice person. If you REALLY cared, you WOULD go to her office hours. Decent prof. Mean grading...
Akman is one of the few professors at McGill who actualy challenges students - even if that means arguing something she dosn't agree with. She is also the only professor I have had at McGill who intensly cares about the students. If you want to learn something take her class.
very CARING and sweet professor. Remembers her students, each ones' specific issues or inquiries.Gives great importance to her students. If she doesnt answer a question, it's cuz she had given the answer some minutes before while you were picking your nose. Its good she dont waste time!class is 50 min
Prof. Akman is great at teaching this class. The material is intersting and she is obviously passionate about the topic. I have had her for GEOG 216 and 309. She is better at teaching the upper level classes because they are smaller and she gets to know her students. Fair marker.
Half of me loves her, the other half wants to punch her in the face. You really need to take the class to understand. Fascinating material, and she is super nice, but she always manages to find a way to confuse an easy assignment and make sure you have no idea how to get a good mark.
Dr. Akman is one of a kind. She truly wants her students to learn the most they can, and is not interested in simply 'keeping up' McGill's image. She is always available for students with needs, and is willing to discuss anything during office hours. Very fair, and super cool!
Akman makes me want to gouge my eyes out. Her classes will make you die on the inside. She is not nice. Nor is she a good teacher. I would rather have an anvil dropped on me than take another class with her. Boo.
Not the friendliest, but not a witch. I had absolutely no real interest in the class to begin with, but she didn't kill it for me. My biggest complaint is the marking - it seemed a little off to me. This was one of the most boring classes I've ever taken.
Fill your IDS 400-level class quota some other way unless you're some kind of masochist
I think everyone who took this class with professor akman will agree it went really well. Great, easy to follow information, good communication between students and teacher, and very relaxed. I suppose the only problem would be that we all did too well.
Very easy class for a 400 hundred level. Akman does nothing but complain about how busy she is. Is very clear about who she likes and dislikes. Not a nice person, mentally unstable.
Not the best professor but her tests are easy! Just do really well on her assignments and follow the guidelines to the nearest detail and you will get your A!
She is a good teacher. Her notes are very precise and clear. The readings are very boring however. Also, this year she is co-teaching and both profs do not have the same tecahing technique which can be very confusing!
most of her course pack readings are only supplimentary. if you want to get a good mark.. make sure to attend all her lectures, which is simply to copy down her overhead notes.
WORST TESTS EVER. Based on memorization of her notes! Does not test how the students knowlege of the concepts and their ability to apply them. Rather it is high school tests. How many points can you remember! Nice Lady, but her tests are plain out STUPID. And who can present a clear oral over 2 minutes!!! Could have done a lot more with the course!
Very nice, optimistic and always willing to help... so she says. But the most obvious things to do, that would benefit the most number of students the greatest way, like posting her notes on web-ct, or even listening to student's questions during exams, she volontarily refuses to do. In my opinion, she's a 2-face.
tests and assignments are fairly easy. Teacher has 2-sides - plays an act of being caring and concerned in class, but when students come up with their concerns she gets nasty. Would not even answer questions during an exam without getting angered. But course load is fair, she gives us clear notes to take, and assignments are actually fun
She's a very sweet person, and teaches in a very clear manner. A lot of people complain about how she doesn't put the notes up on WebCT, but it's not that bad; she gives you plenty of time to write them down. And besides, it's a good way to encourage people to actually come to class. Overall a good prof.
Tests are based on her overheads so attend lectures to copy them down. However you would ok is you just read the course pack and look at other people notes. This class would have been fine if not for the other prof, Deslaurier.
really nice prof just study her notes and you'll do fine and must do some of the readings...
Awesome Prof. Go to class and copy down exactly what she puts up on the overhead and you'll be money. Dont even have to worry about the readings and she will do whatever she can to make sure you get the best mark possible. I would DEFINITELY take her classes
She is not a very good teacher (pure regurgitation for tests and papers). Despite initial appearances, she is condescending and full of herself. It seems beyong her comprehension that students could actually come to their own logical and insightful conclusions without her guidance.
She's really nice and makes class really interesting. She makes a course that could be really dull fun. Her notes are clear and easy to follow. She gives many case studies so that you can understand better and actually see the application of the abstract concepts. She gives you lots of studying tips and is always ready to help.
If you want to enroll in the boringest class ever, sign up for an Akman class. She'd be better suited to teach Grade 7 Geography than at a university level. And while all you have to do do get a good grade is study the in-class notes, she is so closed to discussion, the class is really rather frustrating.
this course, although has been known as a "bird course" for many years, is perhaps one of hard electives at mcgill. Akman seldom provides satisfactory answers to students' questions after class (70% of the time she dismisses questions or gives very ambiguous answers).
Hard grader!!
She is a much better professor than professor Breau her co-lecturer. He essentially makes the class very difficult to follow while she is clear and simplifies everything to an understandable level.
Awesome prof! So helpful, she REALLY goes the extra mile. I've never taken a class that actually turned my perception of the subject on its head. Professor Akman really cares about her students' success. I definitely reccomend taking a class from her!
She's a great lecturer. Tough but fair. Lectures are very clear. If you read the articles and take notes you will do very well on the tests.
While never having actually spoken to Prof. Akman, I can say one thing for sure--easiest class I've taken at McGill. Go to class, copy slides, spend a few hours memorizing slides. Super easy exams.
Terrible, awful professor. I cannot say enough. Disrespectful, condescending (like other commenters have said, will not tolerate alternative opinions). She refuses to use WebCT.
She has earned the title 'Slackman' in our circle of friends. In review sessions she has been known to answer questions with "look over your notes" or "If you were paying attention..."the point of review sessions is to go over material that is UNCLEAR:by simply telling students to review the material that was initially unclear is REDUNDANT
Very friendly disposition. It's as if a kindergarten teacher were teaching at a University level. Very warm and caring. As a teacher, she is about on par for an intro level class. Spends a considerable time going over very basic topics, but she is fairly engaging and a pleasure to listen to. Recommended.
The class wasn't hard, but she did her best to be unhelpful. She was unpleasant whenever questioned and made up statistics. Her co-lecturer Breau was much better.
This class seems easy but the average was a B-; the exams are ridiculously nit picky. My grades were all over the place, ranging from a C+ to an A (in terms of exam results) and this class was pretty boring. If you like memorizing many useless facts, this is the class for you! Waste of time - do not take it unless you have to.
Akman is a terrible professor! Several times she gave us conflicting information, or that was just false! When questioned on her sources, she was unable to provide any, leading me to believe that she ballparks #s to incl. on her slides, which are possibly the only interest in this class. Won't accept other credible sources of info on exams/in class
Prof. Akman SEEMS nice...until you get to know her. She shows up on the first day talking about how her course is so easy, the tests are simple, no final- everything sounds great. THEN..she turns into the terrible person she is. Marks RIDICULOUSLY hard, not willing to help students...and you will not get the A! Do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY!!
I don't understand why people are calling her a bad teacher, she's great. Easy and fair exams, an engaging classroom full of discussion, and always willing to answer questions and help. She doesn't use WEBCT, but she's right in saying it makes students come to class, take notes, and learn. I got an A, and anyone else can if they go to every class.
Opinions for Prof. Akman seem to be all over the place. This is because it all depends on which class you attend. The higher level classes she teaches will be a much better experience than say, 216.It's true that you'll be disappointed when it comes to getting assessment results. Still, she makes it clear what must be done to get an A, which isnt easy
Great class when breau teaches it. Akman is not very interesting and makes class somewhat boring. As a visual learner she makes class disadvantaged towards you because her use of schematics, graphs, etc. is limited to her and a powerpoint. VERY uninvolved as a student! She frequently references her experience dealing with "drugs" while in the "war"
Prof Akam is a tough cookie. Her topics are SO interesting, and it takes her some time to give you that knowlege-base in order to continue to more specific topics. She is rather impatient when students question her statements/research/theories, and will readily debate them openly during class. But she is a fair grader and an adorable person.
One of the easiest classes at Mcgill.. I did it as an elective and got a high grade. Only 3 midterms which are pretty easy, one 3min oral presentation and one 1 page paper. She speaks slowly, has powerpoints are main points from the textbook (you need the textbook). Lectures not recorded. Take this for easy grade!
Akman is a rude, unpleasant, and unhelpful teacher. She reads straight from her slides and offers no arguments in favor of her material. When I attended office hours to get clarification on a quiz she referred me to the readings with no further explanation, assuming (incorrectly) that I had not previously read it. Memorize slides for an A.
Most information that is tested is provided in class but the readings really help make sense of the notes given. If you have a real interest in the material presented take advantage of office hours to have a chat with Prof Akman, she is an incredible woman that has worked all over the world and has much knowledge to share.
The lectures were okay, but nothing too intriguing. At times, Akman was really kind and friendly... at others, she was quite unfriendly, making it slightly uncomfortable for students asking questions or commenting in class. Lectures follow the slides quite closely, so are fairly clear, but quite dull.
Not a very helpful professor. She made no effort to go over past midterms. She clearly made a mistake in one of the multiple choice and stubbornly refused to correct it, or at least take out the questions out, when most of the students got it wrong. Class was a bit interesting but most of the info can be gotten straight from the course pack.
I just love her! She is VERY CLEAR, she speaks SLOWLY, always happen to see you in her office. BUT her tests are kind of tricky...
I rather enjoyed Dr. Akman. She spoke clearly and slowly and her slides were well organized and succinct. GEOG 219 is an interesting course and you will learn a lot (despite the leftward lean). It is not hard to get an A if you memorize the slides and do the readings; the tests are tricky but fair (especially with the bonus on the final)
She treats you like you are 5th grade. You memorize the reader and spit it back out. The readings are not relevant (maybe 10 yrs ago). if you try to expand on the ideas in the readings, it is clear she is only able to repeat the text. Don't even bother trying to question her opinion. She is always right and doesn't even care to listen or engage.
Professor Akman is experienced and knowledgeable, but she can be occasionally downright rude to students who ask questions in class or seek assistance during office hours. Upon asking a question in office hours on a test, she took 5 minutes to find the answer buried in a reading and couldn't offer any further explanation or clarification.
I really enjoyed this class. If you are unclear about any of the assignments she will gladly sit down during office hours and help you out! Her slides are very clear, but she does not post them on mycourses so it's somewhat necessary to go to class. The readings are all in the coursepack and they're straightforward and not very long.
