AVOID AT ALL COSTS. If you get him, request another professor.
Not the most clear in class, but very helpful if you ask for help.
VERY unclear in class, but very helpful during office hours

very very unclear, worst teacher you can have
I took his class my first semester freshman year, and found him to be my least favorite teacher I've had at URI. He's not the worst teacher in the world, but he's not even close to being the best.
extremely heavy french accent makes it hard to understand what he says. he also tries to be funny and it doesnt work, i havent tried his office hours yet but im not liking him
Visual Basic isn't really all that complicated, most people complaining just need to smarten up and put some of those cognitive reasoning skills developed early on in life to use rather than complain and accuse the professor of making things hard.
Terrible Exams that are designed to fail the entire class.
CAN'T SPEAK ENGLISH! Do not take him if you can't understand French. He's very hard to understand and doesn't teach well. Hard to focus on.
His accent is not that bad, listen carefully and you'll understand. Good teacher, nice guy, and you'll learn ALL about his dogs.
accent not a problem, but monotone voice is. very boring. does not give a clear idea of what is expected.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had! I hate csc201 and URI because of him! DO NOT take any class with him!
Nice guy, not very patient. If you take the VB course ask him to say "GotFocus".. the class will die laughing.
Guy is hard to understand and tough grader. Takes off for little mistakes. Went in for extra help to his office and was a little helpful. Try to avoid him.
If you are a computer engineer, DO NOT take a course with this guy, he will instantly hate you. Ignores all questions and emails from all the computer engineers in the class. I'm about to email his dog (Nikkie) and tell her to TAKE IT DEEP
This guys is full of it and cannot teach. How he has a job, I don't know. I even wrote a letter to the dean, like that did anything.
take this class with him if you want to learn french instead of java. very hard to understand, and most of the class did not learn a thing.
This professor is very bad, and doesn't explain anything. He will often give you programming assignments and labs with very little knowledge on how to do it. He often rambles, like "This book, have you seen this text book" and repeating every word at least 3 times, is the only thing you will remembe
Worse professor ever. Half the time he teaches (unclearly) and the other half he jokes around, which I did not find it humerous at all. Overall he is a brilliant professor who can not teach if his life depended on it.
Not a good pro.
This prof has no structure whatsoever. He randomly talks about any topic in the book. It is almost impossible to get a good grade on his test. There were many times that many students didn't finish the lab because they didn't know how to do it. I recommend you only take him, if you already know java. If you don't know it you will be confused.
Once the novelty of the French accent & smug sense of humor fades, it's clear he's an absolutely awful instructor. He's ill prepared, unable to stay on subject, and bereft of any interest in students as PEOPLE. Furthermore, he's unqualified to sit on UGrad Commitee - I've needed to go over his head and prevailed. He's an arrogant, malicious man!
This dude is just not kosher by any means.......horrible explanations......bad teachings.....no sense what...so...ever....avoid teacher at all costs........all.....costs.........

he gave me a hard time about using an earlier edition of the text. what a joke. if i didn't have friends that could write in java to help me, i would have failed this class
This guy just sucks. Cant speak a word of english, if you speak French, then this is the class for you. How he got hired here is beyond me.
He has a bad accent and uses a lot of poor examples. He doesn't really explain programming assignments and relies on the TA for the lab. The good thing about him is if you have a B in the class you dont have to take the final.
SUCKS STAY AWAY
doesn't explain. very unclear in his assignments. just frustrating to deal with.
Do the assignments and listen in class and you'll do great.
STAY AWAY FROM BAUDET!!! This man is very, very vindictive. He will decide whether he likes you, and if he doesn't BEWARE! Doesn't care about students, gives no partial credit on exams, and is very unclear in his assignment instructions. This man is a bad person, and an even worse teacher. Heed the warnings, and don't learn the hard way like me.
straight off the boat from france , and he needs to go back to whereever he came from, downright awful
This guy is totally worthless in the classroom. He failed to present Java concepts in an understandable manner, and his tangents were amusing, but ultimately a waste when so many people were struggling. Outside of class he's nice though, so it might be worth a try approaching him for help. Use your textbook, and google for assignments.
Very funny guy. Hard to understand because of his accent.
For those that complain about his courses being too hard, it is probably because you didn't do well in CSC 211. That is why they are called PRE-reqs. You are supposed to know that stuff already. If you barely passed 211, how the heck are you going to pass 212? His accent is fine. Just pay attention and do some work outside of class. Learn Java 1st.

Difficult to understand, huge ego, difficult to learn from.
Fabulous for bright, self-motivated students because he's demanding and very, very responsive. I've learned an incredible amount from him. Not great for those who want to do the minimal amount of work to get by, since he doesn't have much patience for laziness.
Tricky class, but will not help anyone who is relatively new to the material. Even if you understand the lectures, his assignments are unclear and his tests/quizzes demand way more than what he teaches. If you want to learn something and do good, avoid his class. The work and the personal attacks aren't worth the grade and effort.
Mean. Humiliates. Takes Advantage. Major negative influence on any student's life.
He's the man. Kind of demanding, but there are far worse professors regarding that. Labs are cake. Programming assignments can be tricky, and his tests require much outside study, but it's not impossible by any means. Really nice guy, fun to talk to outside of class.
Not an incredibly difficult class if you pay attention during lectures. All of the labs are just fixing broken programs, versus CSC211 which had us create programs from scratch. He has a heavy accent, but isn't hard to understand since he speaks clearly.
I don't know java that well, but I'm almost fluent in French because of him. Kind of entertaining, but that's not what I need from a profy. IDK if it was him or the TA, but whoever it was, hard grades. Have fun writing java code in pencil for your quizzes and exams, because that's how CS is taught here at good old URI. Dropped CS like a bad habit.
Dr. Baudent is an amazing person & professor. If you listen during class, take notes, and actually understand comp. sci,, you will do fine in his class. Otherwise, esp. if you are rude, change majors.
Hilarious. Doesn't ask much for lab work, but quizzes/exams assume some reading (and time management doing the problems).
This man was teaching a programming class, and simply does not know how to program. So instead he grades your code based on whether he likes the comments, which also fails because he simply does not know how to speak English. I would have gotten a C at best in this class had I not tested out. If at all possible, avoid this professor.
great teacher - explains very well and knows what he's talking about. VERY exact about his grading though - if you don't give him EXACTLY what he wants you will lose a lot of points. very fair to and understanding of students, but expects your respect in return. very funny man...he'll have you laughing all class
i love professor baudet, he is very funny. i had a lot of difficulty in csc211 but i was also lazy and completely new to csc. he is very kind and understanding and definitely willing to help if students get confused. i found csc to be time consuming.
Refuses to answer questions about labs because he doesn't know anything about Java. Talks about useless things like sheep in class and stuffs everything into the last 5 minutes, making you late. Never tells you what quizzes or tests are on and takes points off when you don't do EXACTLY what he's looking for. He made me hate computer science.
pretty good teacher but not great. labs+hw(programming assignments) are extremely easy but the tests and quizzes are pretty hard. class doesnt require a whole lot of work. dont buy the book. puts vocab words that he doesnt explain on the test but other than that the tests are fair, just hard.
he is a pretty good person, but i think if he was a good programmer he would not be here. he is lowly intellectual when it comes to programming in other words he is not a programmer he is trying to be one. he does not help:
Professor Baudet is very passionate about his work. The thing is...it seems like his passion is being French and not teaching Java. I learned a lot about counting sheep!
Difficult to understand. Squeezes random points in between long digressions. Labs are useless because the material they cover has to be learned outside of class to complete programming assignments which are due prior to the labs. Should attempt stand-up comedy not teach.
First word to come to mind when thinking of Baudet is horrible. He is the worst teacher ive had on campus and is a horrible teacher. He has the need to crack jokes which are not funny and talks more about sheep and elephants than computer science itself. Also is accent couldnt get any more distracting from class. Never again will i take him.
He is one of the best programming professors I ever had. He is extremely clear and easy to understand. If you listen to what he has to say in the lectures and pay any kind of attention in class, you will do good. The labs and programs pertain to what he has talked about in the lecture so you always know what you are doing. Excellent professor!
Gerard Baudet is the worst teacher I have ever had. He does not explain anything in class regarding assignments. You will get tests on information he did not cover. He did not inform the library what book he was using because "They should know". He is simply going through the paces and has given up on teaching students. I am disgusted.
Professor Baudet is a nice person. But when it comes to being a good teacher that is useless, and he certainly proved that. He doesn't respond to e-mails, was rarely even in his office during office hours and honestly seemed to not care about his students AT ALL! I did very well in his class with NO thanks to him!
Baudet is plenty nice, but his class is unbearable. The only way to get through is to teach yourself, because he's never clear and the accent doesn't help. The quizzes and exams are difficult and he doesn't understand that it might be his fault an entire class failed one. Don't take him if you actually want to be taught by someone.
Looking back, I think I think he is the reason I dropped CS. I felt like the most retarted person in his class. He would make you write programs in labs based off of stuff he never covered. I was naive and thought that I wasn't studying hard, or I had to do my own studies outside of material. I'm fluent in french, but that didn't even help.
Very unclear about many things. Labs are independent, and those who work together get 0's and letters to the dean for PLAGIARISM! Spends about the first 10 minutes of class talking about farm animals, and grades unfairly. French accent sucks too.
He is an unfair grader, who doesn't teach you anything about the topic. Labs are impossible to do. You cannot understand a word he says. He is completely unhelpful if you ask a question. I just recommend not taking this class at all you will learn nothing. He doesn't look at the programs you create only what you print out. Worst teacher ever.
So the other things you've read here are more or less true. He's difficult to understand, a hard grader, and a stickler for the details. But! If you're willing to put forth a bit of effort, you are guaranteed a return on your investment. Never has a teacher prepared me so well for real-life situations. Just make sure to use the right font! :)
Ask Professor Baudet a question about computer science, mathematics, or sheep and you will surely get an insightful and enlightening answer.
Baudet's teaching style is not for everybody. Bright and self-motivated students thrive in his class; you have to be willing to put in some effort yourself, which I think is a reasonable expectation for any college course. Exams can be challenging, but not unreasonable. Make sure you study vocabulary terms.
While Baudet means well, it's clear that he doesn't particularly care about his class. Baudet has a poor curriculum with easy labs and exams with complex questions and gives you little time to do them. Baudet takes forever to reply to you as well. It's clear Baudet cares more about his research and more about posting articles than helping his class
Very helpful if you go early with your problems. Do not wait till the end of semester, he will be very pissed at this point. Some of us were having trouble with a certain topic, he spent an entire class explaining it. Cares if his students understand the basics before moving on.
Worst teacher ever. Very unclear, exams are impossible and he makes stupid jokes about sheep. I have had bad professors before but he takes the cake.
Difficult to follow in class and tests were impossible. Explained things a little better one-on-one but ask for help early if you want to pass.
He's actually a nice guy if you talk to him, but his teaching skills need improvement. Harsh grader, very anal about specifications. Difficult to learn programming from code written on the board. Grading TAs were sadistic. If you go to him 1 on 1, he'll try everything he can to help, but that doesn't make this class any less of a nightmare.
Exams can be tuff, especially the Part 2 sections. The teacher also is a tuff grader and is not afraid to penalize any mistake, no matter how small. That being said, he's very nice and will explain anything however many times it takes for you to understand. Random pop quizes are annoying but always cover material from previous class. Generous curve
His quizzes and exams are EXTREMELY difficult. The grading on them is very harsh, and will average around 40100. The labs are easy if you are good at applying generic ideas before getting specific examples. The programs (4 per semester plus final project) take 6-10 hours a piece.
C'est dificile d'apprendre en clase, mais si tu etudie, tu vas etre bien. He is a self-identifying hard-grader, but only so the students get critical feedback; he scales the grades heavily to account for intensive correction, which I think is great. He lectures for exposure to content, not easy answers, so study and it'll come back in your favor.
Hard but not impossible. Pop quizzes are a pain and they're pretty difficult. As long as you give a good effort you should pass. Don't expect to do well if you don't practicestudy. Definitely a good learning experience overall.
Although he is there for you if you specifically need help, expect to waste a portion of your life with this dismal class. You won't learn anything useful or new, but that's clearly something that the CS department doesn't care about.
He didn't actually teach the class, it was all based on the online video lectures done by another professor. The quizzes were all based on the reading in the chapters and not at all on the video lectures, so if you watched the video but didn't read you would fail the quiz. Some concepts were pretty difficult and I was saved by my TA in this class.
Overall, good professor. In my experience, people either hate or love him, and the people that hate him tend not to be the greatest students. If you pay attention in class and have a basic understanding of computer science, it's very difficult to get less than an A- in a Baudet class.
We spent 75 minutes on a logic gate schematic that didn't work. He offers minimal strategies to problem solving, but does not express what a good design looks like. You could spend an hour designing a circuit of logic gates and find out the next day that there is a major flaw in the design. This course needs a new professor.
Had Baudet for 212, 411 and 412. He ONLY gives pop quizzes -- he will never tell you when one is. Keep your grade up, he will let you skip the final (B 212, C 411, B 412 -- my experience.) 212: lots of programming; queues, stacks, linked lists. 411: tons of circuits -- nonstop homework! 412: threading, memory -- mathy, but not too bad
very good!
His methods of teaching are very broad-concept and never goes into useful detail (especially in material that could be for homeworks/projects or exams), but once you get used to him you realize that the material is mostly taught with self discipline anyways. You need to go to class to do well, and if you have an open mind, he is hilarious.
I was warned that Baudet's classes were horrible, but I enjoyed his class. There was a lot more lecturing than I'm used to in computer science classes, but he involves the class and makes you think. Even though he's a tough grader, but he does grade on a curve. I found him to be quite funny, and I love his French accent.
The way Professor Baudet runs his classroom is not conducive to learning or passing his class. Graded all homework months late, never giving feedback or solutions unless prompted hard in his office hours, where he still managed to be as unhelpful as possible. gives confusing lectures, puts his own spin on material so you cannot learn on your own.
Certainly one of the worst CS classes I've ever taken. Exams are very difficult and if you miss any lectures you won't pass. Everything is graded on a curve which means you won't know till the very end if you passed.
Great professor. Very funny and keeps the class entertaining. If you don't pass you probably didn't go to every class and didn't try hard enough.
By far, the worst professor I ever had in school. He literally took away my passion for computer science. I came to class and stayed involved in the discussion, but I always felt as if he had it out for me. It is very unfortunate that I could not avoid him in order to progress through the major.
