when explaining, he explains in english so the students can understand...
pretty nice guy, not a bad marker, but can't teach grammar!
very hard to understand
This prof is a genuine sweetheart. He is very funny in class... I give him an A+
One of the best french teachers I've had. Understanding and helpful!
Good prof. Not very good looking, but His accent is what makes him sexy.
Difficult to understand, expects way too much for an intro course
good guy. Made it easy to understand.
Very accomidating, Good for comprehensive examples
He's the best ever! really sweet and helpful; sexy accent and great stories! A+!
A nice guy, helps if you want it and knows his stuff
very sweet and helpful. LOVE that accent
not a good prof, very hard to understand
Excellent prof! He's sweet and knowledgeable! A+!!!!
good teacher, kinda hard for an intro course, i love when he speaks english!! i sounds so cute!
If you are serious about learning to SPEAK french, then this is the insturctor for you.
Easy course, great prof, he actually speaks french to you, but SO much grammar revision
excellent prof, Very Helpfull and understanding. Tells good stories
he was the absolute worst teacher i ever had, as well as the most ignorant. very unhelpful and uncaring. if you get him, drop the course. i wish i had.
All I can say is run screaming... worst prof I've ever had. Talked too much about mother country rather than teaching french...
An ok prof... doesn't help you to understand much... thinks we're all francophones like he is.
He expects you to have an extensive french vocabulary and is a fairly hard marker. Very pleasant man, yet sometimes gives information that seems irrelevant.
very un-useful prof!!His lectures include very irrelevant information and he doesn't prepare you at all for tests and assignments!! Very Hard marker!! Pleasant man...but not recommended!!
He created a comfortable atmosphere and told great stories. He is nice. However, he is a hard marker and not always clear with instructions or directions. He corrects work with many productive suggestions. I liked his class and learned a lot.
it still puzzles me how someone that doesn't know english can teach introductory french. very ignorant man, and i would NEVER take another class from him. he doesn't belong as a teacher.
A great prof! He makes you feel comfortable speaking french. I found him very understanding. He would also prepare you for exams by giving you full test outlines including examples from each section that is on the test!
I didn't find him too bad. He actually speaks french, unlike a lot of frnech teachers I've had, and although it is a little hard to understand him, you find yourself paying closer attention. VEry nice man, but tends to be a bit boring, and repeats stuf
Barf. Worst prof I've ever had....gave me the same mark on everything. I almost failed the course and now I'm doing 2101 and getting straight A's!!!!! Get out of his class!!!

This prof has his favorites. Loves some, dislikes others. Gave me the same mark throughout the whole course. Very rude at times, and needs to learn that some things actually "do" make sense in English
Great Prof!! He is very helpful, and good at teaching the material covered in class. I would definatly recomend him to everyone! Very pleasent and actually speaks french. It helps a lot when a prof understands both languages very well! Get in his class if you can!
although a pleasant and nice man, terrible teacher. gives no notes whatsoever, i never have a clue what he's talking about. if you don't know french already - there's no point to take this class! he's funny sometimes, but gets completely off topic a lot of the time. would not reccommend him.
It is great that he speaks french because it really helps to hear the accent. Knows a lot about french culture and tells great stories. He is a prof who doesn't mind laughing in class. Marks hard but it's useful when exam time comes.
Great prof! Helpful if you need it. Can get a little off topic sometimes but it's interesting.
I don't know why everyone says that Castagne is a bad prof.He is a very nice man,he doesn't mind laughing in class,or answering any questions you may have. It's true about getting the same mark everytime. He is French so you must pay attention in his class, but its a fun class.Overall,he's a great prof
very friendly and funny prof, but cant teach. You have to know french already before taking the course. He isnt easy on beginners. Get way off topic easily. Hes a very nice man, but a extremly hard marker.
He is not a horrible Professor, but if you are not near bilingual, he can be very confusing. Even if you have a strong background in french, you can still not do very well in this class with him. He does not teach the material you are probably just learning, and he does teach the basics you do know.
should not be teaching introductory french.you have to be french with a little english to take his course.assumes eeryone in the class is bilingual. besides that, he's funny, tells ALOT of stories that have nothing to do with anything, but interesting if you dont care about passing
This prof is the nicest I've ever come across at MUN. He gives clear instructions in class too. I was totally lost in French 1501 with another prof, and he touched in something we did in French 1501 today and it finally became clear. If you can get this prof, do so! You won't be dissappoined! Amazin
Nice guy over all, but a horrible teacher. He comes from France, great, so he must know what hes talking about. Or at least that is what you tend to think. Unfortunatly, while he is an expert at french, he does not know enough english to be able to teach others. Very difficult to understand at times
Just a terrible experience. Turned me away from french, which had been my intended major.
sweet man, however incabable of teaching. Expects you to know material without teaching. Hard marker.
this prof is so unclear! i can not tell whether he is speaking french or english half the time. He thinks that everyone speaks french meanwhile half of the people in the class have just learned their alphabet!DO NOT TAKE A COURSE WITH HIM!!
the worst prof i had this semester. very unclear and expects everyone to know EVERYTHING!!AVOID HIM!!
I had this prof for 2100 too and I don't think he's that bad. I've gotten 2 A's from him so far! As long as you study hard and make sure you understand the grammar then you should be fine! He practically tells you what's going to be on the exams! Picky with the essays though and can be a hard marker.
Nice man, approachable and willing to help students. No real notes, not very organized at all! doesnt really teach, is usually a boring class, but not intimidating! Does quite a bit of review for tests and exams, and goes over all tests! Not my fav class, but not horrible!
deffinently the worst prof I have ever had.If you have done any type of french before it seems like he is out to get you.Doesn't offer help! Corrected me on words and grammer points with reasons like "The french wouldn't use that word cause it is to long, and they are lazy"!Actually told me to study info for a test that we never learned yet.Awful!
A very sweet and genuine man. He has a little trouble teaching in english and does not understand the english language very well, but other than that he is a very good prof. He does extensive reviews for exams and assingments, which is great. He's also very helpful. He's a great teacher, but can be a hard marker as well. two thumbs up.
Horrible prof. Possibly the most boring prof I've ever had, he gives horrible notes, makes no sense. He doesn't know much english which doesn't help at all! Expects students to know everything about french perfectly, unfair marker. Terrible class, avoid him if you can!!
I think Castagne is a wonderful prof. He is a hard marker, but does extensive review before tests and exams. He is approachable, understanding and very helpful. If you show up to class and participate his classes can be fairly entertaining (maybe a little off topic but he always comes back to the point!).
I really look forward to this class .. Castagné is entertaining and makes class interesting. He's enthusiastic however he is a tough marker and if you want to do well is his course you're going to have to work!!
He's very good. His classes are interesting and FUN. He's understanding, helpful, and very clear. You may have to try; so if you're not interested in learing, he's probably not for you.
Gerard is the best French prof at MUN in my opinion. You have to go to class though he takes attendance every class but his classes are fun and he is easy to understand ! I wish he taught every French course !!!!!!
For tests he usually does examples of the test a class or two before it so you understand how much you need study and what you will actually have to do. He's a cute little French man who's pretty funny. He says that learning a language is supposed to be fun not stressful.
Castagne is a great prof! He's very clear about what to expect on tests/exams. He is a hard marker but he provides good feedback. If you show up for class (he takes attendance) and participate, you'll do well. I loved him!
I loved Castagne! He's actually from France. He really knows what he's talking about. Always cheerful and friendly, taught me a lot. I'd recommend him to both those who are perfecting their french and those who are just learning. He's a great professor!
Excellent prof! He is always willing to answer questions, and obviously loves teaching. Castagne is friendly and funny and gives lots of practice for the final dictation exam. Very occasionally, his notes on grammar can get a bit muddled, but Bonne Route is flawless in its explanations.
The good rates are misleading, this prof is very careless in the sense he expects everyone to know everything before he teaches it. He is a nice man, but that doesn't get you good marks. You have to work hard and understand French beforehand. Good Luck.
Prof is brutal. Not very clear in explanations and goes through material way too fast. He has favorites in the class and calls on the same people all the time.
As long as you're willing to put in the work, you will have no problem with this prof. I loved Castagne, definitely one of my favorite profs at MUN. Very approachable and helpful. He is the cutest little French man! Highly recommend this prof.
The absolute worse prof I have had throughout my entire degree. He expects you to be completely fluent right from the first day. Rarely if ever gives notes and when he does they usually are incomprehensible. Extremely unfair marker. Avoid his class at all costs.
I found him to be friendly, but very demanding. He can be somewhat condescending, and I found him to be somewhat unapproachable.
Terrible prof! Would not reccomend him. He is very unclear; in pronounciation and what he expects. Not an approachable person, and personally I found him to be very rude!
Nice enough man who wants his students to succeed, but not a very good teacher. He speaks way too fast and expects everyone to understand exactly what he is saying in French. A million in-class assignments that were worth very little for the final mark. He doesn't spend enough time on some things, and goes over some other things way too much.
I loved Castagne! I felt comfortable in his class as he was really friendly and encouraging. Very clear about what he expects and if you do the work and practice you'll be fine. Don't skip class, though. It's difficult to catch up when you miss time in a language class.
I was terrified about this course at first. But Castagne is pretty good at explaining the material and providing examples. He goes over all the material that is expected of you for exams which helps a lot. His office hours are also very good for extra review and questions. Would definatley recommend doing as much practice online as possible!
Very clear in what he wanted and what he was testing on. Corrections were all useful and you almost always had a chance to improve your mark. Gets assignments and tests back quickly. Great prof for french!
Castagne's class was interesting and he was always very clear about what we should expect to see on the tests and exam. He gave students a chance to improve their grades by identifying errors in their essays and letting them resubmit a corrected version of their essay. I highly recommend him!
He is the best French prof I've gotten yet. Third course I've taken with him and he just gets better! He's approachable, wants his students to do well, and is willing to do anything to help. He tells you exactly what will be on the test, grades fairly, and if you go to class and participate he will boost your mark! Just a stand up guy.
Definitely one of my favorite profs for my first year at MUN! For those who did not take FI in highschool or those who are just starting out with french I wouldn't really recommend him since he is pure french. Did slightly better with him than I did in all of highschool. Fair grader, one assignment a week and I thought be was very approachable!
Castagne is average and his courses were easy. However, if you don't go to class he will mark you harder and won't be overly nice to you. If I absolutely had to take him again, I could manage but if I never see that man again then I'll be more than ok.
Grades harder if you don't come to class. Has class favourites. Is not clear in lectures. notes are rarely given and when they are they are very unorganized. You have to basically be fluent in French in his class. Very condescending.
Not really a fan of Castagne's teaching style as I don't feel that he spends enough time explaining grammar before expecting you to use it in essay's. However, he is very understanding and accommodating to students.
Blatant favoritism towards the few people who actively participate. If you're shy and quiet or if you miss a few classes he doesn't like you and if he doesn't like you he grades you harder. Relies on students to teach the class themselves and rarely offers any of his own insight. Notes are nonexistant. The course material was interesting though.
I thought i was going to do terrible on the first test because of his reviews but, i got an A and got an A on every other tests. I didn't even study as much as i could have. He's nice and loves when you participate so don't be afraid to, you'll get extra marks. He prepared for the tests very well, so as long as you go to class you'll be fine
Currently spending 3 months with him in Saint Pierre, doing french 2100, 2101, 2300 with him. Hes a sweet older man and he's very helpful, stays after class everyday helping us. He loves you if you participate so don't be afraid to. He also comes to the bar with us sometimes and dances. Will definitely take a course with him again.
Great prof for a first year french course! Participation was important to him and he made the lectures a lot more enjoyable! His english was sometimes hard to understand but listening to his french made it easier to know how to pronounce words.
Tough, tough grader.
He's a really nice guy, but his lessons are all over the place and very repetitive. He's also a really tough grader and doesn't have a clear method to his marking. He expects a very high level of french writing skills from the students and his feedback isn't very detailed.
he's a very tough grader, he tries to help outside of class but most of the time he just makes everything worse. picks favourites in the class and if you don't agree with his opinion you'll be graded harder .expects as soon as you learn something to 100% know it.
I had Gérard for 2100 and 2101 and he was one of the best profs I've had for french. He is a bit of a tough grader but it really helps you in the long run. I was failing at the beginning of his classes but getting A's at the end. He cares about his students. I am definitely taking more classes with him in the future and would highly recommend him.
Super nice guy. Very intelligent as well.
French guy teaching french, at first that makes sense till you hear he could not stand when someone pronounced things wrong or didn't understand. He chose the one guy in the class who was french to answer questions to move on faster. I had to get deferred out cause even with the final i wouldn't of passed
I've had Gerard for 2100,2101,2300 and 3100. He's genuinely a nice guy, but he does expect a lot from his students. He wants you to do well and to do well you need to go to class to learn the material. His tests are hard but if they're unfair and you tell him he'll usually remake the test for a redo. Overall good prof, but you need to work hard.
Gérard is hands down the best prof I've ever had. He taught me 2100, 2101, 2300, and 3100. Makes me sad I won't have him any more for the rest of my degree as he doesn't teach past 3100. He does make you work hard for your grades, but in the end you come out with a much higher knowledge of french than you did going in. Recommend him 100%.
One of my favourite profs I've ever had. Very down to earth guy and very understanding. Very passionate about his language and helping others learn and understand it. He will call on you to participate in class, but in language classes it helps you get better. Would 100% take him for every class if I could.
Phonomenal teacher with a lot of patience. In St. Pierre he would open up the francoforum for studying and give us one on one help if desired. Also went out of his way to provide us activities on weekends. I did not recieve an excellent mark in the course but he did everything could to ensure that i passed!
VERY tough grader! He does not use constructive criticism, leaves unnecessarily rude comments on papers and tests. He uses personal bias when grading. Holds students to unrealistically high standards. My French did improve, but it's not reflected in my grades. Taking his classes will bring down your GPA and your self esteem! Would not recommend!
I really enjoyed class with Dr. Castagne. The material was difficult for me at times but not because of the way he taught it. I think hes hilarious, and he really seems to care about his students. Once he knows your name, hell probably call on you in class, but hell help you through it if you are unsure of the answer. Enjoyed his class a lot.
Probably one of the most monotone and dry people I have ever met. Classes weren't very exciting but the midterms were easy because they followed the exact format and examples of the samples and the exam was the same. You could easily pass the class looking at those but attendance counts there and at the extra conversation classes.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. Considering Ive done other French courses and got high grades, this left me with a poor mark and a lot of unnecessary stress. He does not give constructive feedback at all. He will just tell you that you made a grave error. AVOID this prof if you want to stay motivated in learning French.
Gerard is an amazing prof. He really does his absolute best to make sure we succeed in his courses. He is a tough grader but it makes you work harder to understand the topics. I am currently with him in Saint Pierre for the Frecker Program and he has made the trip so much more enjoyable. He's easy to talk to and loves a good joke. My favorite prof.
Gerard is probably one of the best French profs I've had. He is a really hard grader, so don't expect more than a 75 without REALLY putting in A LOT of work. But his feedback really helps! Wants to see you succeed and respects students who try their best to become fluent. Very approchable and friendly, will banter with students.
Gérard is a great prof, I did the Frecker Program with him, as well as 3100. You will learn a lot in his classes. He is a very tough grader, so weigh your options, he may be the prof you learn the most from but get the worst mark from. I think its worth it though, my French wouldn't be at the level it is today without him.
Gerard is a very reasonable guy, but an extremely tough grader. He is very knowledgeable though, and also very accessible by email. Not the best prof I've had, but definitely not the worst either.
An extremely tough grader and tests are way too long for the allotted time. Do not recommend.
The content presented in lectures are very brief for each chapter. You're expected to learn the rest on your own. Not many examples given of what to expect for tests/evaluations.
Dr. Castagne is a solid choice for a French prof and I thought he was hilarious. He told us exactly what would be on our midterms so we knew what to study and gives enthusiastic lectures. He does call on students so be weary if you don't like that and I found his notes to be too vague so attending class was necessary to know what was going on.
He lectures are insanely boring if you have taken french courses before as they are very easy, he speaks slowly and overexplains every basic thing. He does not have a nice attitude either.
