Too much work! He would assign two essays at once along with other hw assignments, it was just overwhelming. Keep up with ALL the work and you will be fine. Hes a good teacher but needs to relax on all the work.
Great Guy! He is young and trendy. He does assign alot of essays and homework. It can become confusing, but all he wants is for you to be the best. Got an A and did really work hard!

He is one of the best professors that I have ever had. This guy is great. I am glad that I passed this class but If I had to take it again I would take it with him again. He is very understanding and helpful. Do not get me wrong, he makes you work hard but, you will have fun with him. take him.

Gives alot of work!!! But its an interesting and fun class get it all done for the final and you'll get an A (like me). Definantly recomment Take him.
he's a pretty sarcastic guy, but a great teacher. he gives a good deal of homework, but its all worth it in the end. As long as you're there for the important dates when things are due and get all your work done you'll get a good grade!.

Good Teacher...He is clear on what he wants.Do the work and be there everyday.He challenges you to work, participate, and produce great essays.He shows no pity, but overall is a smart and funny guy.
He's great, but he's hard. you will have to do everything to get a good grade. I learned alot in his class although i had alot to do, he challenge me much but he's great.
He's a very opinionated guy, but what is most notable about him is that he tells you how it is. Whether it be with assignments, or even irrelevant things. His class is one of those classes that don't annoy you when you go there. Decent amount of work, not enough to scare me away and im lazy as hell.

You don't really know what to expect the whole semester. He grades very hard and thinks he knows everything. He expects you to talk in class but if it doesn't reflect his point of view he will cut you off. He gets really mad if you don't do the reading and he will ask you to leave the class. Basically he is a jerk avoid him at any cost.
he could seem harsh at times but at least he keeps u amused. Doesn't assign too much reading. if u can WOW him with a comment, an essay, or your final presentation, you will be okay. He's funny and he doesn's hold back. One more thing, he keeps u up to the last minute of class, even if the student's have no more questions.
I have mixed emotions about this guy. He is young and it shows. He tries to shove his opinion on you, so you better agree or your grade will suffer. On the other hand his lectures were mind stimulating, it got the class thinking. He made me aware that there is a world out there, outside of my bubble.

It was difficult to understand his requirements and he exceeds in his derogatory coments during class time.
I think he is a really good professor he helps you a lot if you ask him and he always keeps class interesting.He gives out lots of examples and we don't have that many test most of the times our homework is to read and we work on essays mosdt of the time I recomend this professor because he is really good!
He is a good professor we have only one test.We do 3 essays and they are easy to write he is helpful and he is a nice professor.
Prof. Meraz is rude at first but if he sees that you are serious about the course,he'll cool down.He gives reading assigments every class and you must answer all these questions which are eternal.Alot of writing.Research paper must be good.MLA format required.I guess if you get on his good side he'll be cool.I never was.

I took Proff. Meraz During Spring... He is a pretty cool teacher... sometimes he can be rude and will make you feel stupid... but he does that to make you work harder... HE is very helpful... he will sit down and correct your paper if you need help... I strongly recommend him I am taking him over agian next semester!!

well i came to csun trying to learn something about my culture but it turns out that all ive heard from him is criticism towards me and the other classmates. all he does is make you feel inferior....DONT EVER TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!
Don't take him if you are not open minded. You'll just hate his class if you don't know half the culture in Los Angeles. Even though I don't think he knows half of it himself. Grades hard with easy work.
Worst teacher I think I have ever had. He claims to be an "English Professor" and he talks like a 14 year old. I hardly did any work in this class. Only one essay and a research report at the very end of the semester. He is very condescending and rude to students. If you have a choice, don't take him.
try not to take this class with him... If you are there are three essasys very easy but he will grade hard... Make sure you're not too noticeable on the first week of class because he would pick on u for the rest of the semester... Make sure you do all work It kills to miss a assignment. Easiest class I've taken. Don't need to buy textbooks because he emails all the readings. Read and pay attention cuz his quizzes are open note. LOADS of E.C opportunities. Yes he is sarcastic but also funny. Gets you fired up about your future and present day situations.

AVOID HIM! quizzes are open notes but you wouldnt know that unless you've had him for a class before. Unclear about what he wants in his lame assignments and clearly has his favorites. Doesnt teach at all just talks nonsense.
Proffesoor Meraz is great. He makes the students think critically and encourages questions and discussions. Doesn't use textbooks because he knows how expensive they are..quizzes and tests are based on notes and or videos we would watch in class. Sooo come to class and you'll walk away with an "A" for sure. You have to do the work though.
very easy. all u really have to do is go to class... participate. his topics are interesting... his quizzes are open notes.. usually in order. n his essays are all you really have to work hard on. he is a great person n awesome mentor. he does not like taking bs...

He is very ambiguous with what he wants when it comes to turning in papers. He is kind of rude and very intimidating. Im sure he could be nice but he was not to me. i would recomend a different professor but if you must then pay attention and be outgoing he hates quiet students. always do the homework or he will call you out infront of the class
Meraz is a very open minded person. He speaks what he thinks. He makes everything so easy, with essays, test and class work. Just need to participate, and not be shy around him. Get to know him he is a really cool teacher. Got As on both of his classes. AND don't miss class or class work. READ his books.
Be prepared to know the smallest details for quizzes where he will ask things he never explained or talked about.rubs chicanoism in studnets face. very close minded. also a hypocrite. talked lots of bad things about disney, yet lost is his favorite show. way to go on contradicting yourself. lost is Disney owned. This professor is not shepherd but a hireling. He truly does not put the interest of students first. He instructs but does little in the way of teaching. I do not recommend this professor to any freshman student.
My disclaimer is Do NOT listen to anyone who says Meraz is a great, or even good professor. He has a terrible personality, bad teaching skills, and does not care for his students. He is very hypocritical in his views on the world and extremely close minded. He does not give good instruction. This class was not helpful and I wish him on no one.
This professor may not show interest in student but gives good info on how to succeed. You have to try hard to pass all his test in order to get an A. He gives a lot of extra credit. Their no way of failing the class unless your stupid. Anyway its not impossible to pass the class with an A. If your lazy dont take the class.
Prof. Merez does not know how to teach. He does not explain things very well and never used the book at all. His assignments are easy but he can be very mean. Pointless class.
He's kinda hard prof. It's not crazy hard but you do have to do a lot of reading. He lets you use your notes during random quizzes and discuss answers with other classmates.All you have to do is copy the answer right out of the reading.pretty easy. He is a bit rude I guess.He really cares about moving students away from the main stream. Good Prof!!
I cant understand how the hell he grades. He lets the students grade the tests and when I'm worthy of getting an 55/60.. the student grades it 36/60.. He doesn't graded fairly at all. i'm so disappointed.

The class material was very interesting. His way of teaching, however, not so much. Could be rude, and not very helpful at times. Could be more creative with lectures to make the class more interesting. Do the work, participate, and come to class, and you'll pass.
The way in wish he grades is downright confusing. He is the classic example of a lazy professor who prefers having the students grade there own papers and giving them credit for it , heres the problem with that; most of your peers are idiots. I'm definitely telling my friends to avoid this professor. Useless!
This professor can be very easy if you get on his good side. He gives a lot of extra credit although I do not approve of his grading. He allows students to grade each others papers which is not fair because you usually get marked off for answers that are not even wrong.
Rude, cynical, and hypocritical. He will make you feel like the world is a cold harsh place. He doesn't care about excuses or opinions that are contradictory to his own. Don't take him, unless you have to.
His class is not hard but his teaching style is no good. His grading methods dont make sense and his personal point of views are always pessemitic. There is times where he assigns no work, then all of a sudden multiple assignments are due. Very careless guy yet not that bad of a proffesor. Overall i dont recommend.
He's a really nice guy... you can say he has his cynical moments. One of those teachers that will tell you the truth without worrying if it hurts your feelings or not. Overall take his class.. you'll learn more than just how to write. Offers a lot of extra credit. But without it.. I still have an A =)

He's an okay professor. I would never recommend him to anyone. His grading is horrible. You never know when he's going to grade the work. He assigns various easy assignments but doesn't check them after a month or 2 later. You never know your actual grade until it's too late. Don't buy any of the books. Can be found at the library.
Definitely not helpful.He never has a lesson plan and teaches from youtube videos. rude, extremely cynical and his grading is ridiculous.If your opinion does not match his he will criticize it harshly!I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM he was no help and completely irresponsible when it came to the one on one meetings before and after midterms.

Prof Meraz is not the easiest to get along with and has a very strong opinion. He always criticized my writing and I am grateful that he did. I actually learned alot from him and is by far my fav professor at CSUN. Do not be afraid to challenge him (i think thats why we got along). He might be tough but not impossible.

It's hard to rate this guy. One day you love him, and the next, you can't stand him. Overall, I'm glad I took his class. Although he may be blunt and hard headed, he really gets you to think. It was easy for me to get along with him and most of his exams were open notes. The class is pretty challenging, but I recommend it. Go DJ Meraz! =D
He is hard to get along with and makes students feel dumb when they ask questions or answer his questions. He is sarcastic and sometimes he seems really nice and funny and others it just seems like he doesn't care about his students. I did okay in his class and turned in all my work. As long as you're on time and do the work, you'll pass the class.
Worst class by far I have taken. He was not a nice teacher, couldn't control the class and very unorganized. He required off campus events in East L.A which was money and because I couldn't make two due to me not having a car I ended up with a C instead of an A. It was a class I dreaded going to. Avoid if you can.
Easy professor. Required events faaarr outside of campus. I always had to take the bus! Really easy class though. Just attend all events required and write a 4 paragraph response to 4 questions he assigned. The topics are interesting. The quizzes are always done at home. There's no reason not to pass. & for the final, we had to make a video.
Meraz is a decent professor. He does his best to emphasize the quintessential themes of the Chicano culture. The off-campus events are annoying but tolerable if you live somewhere within the Los Angeles region. Can be a bit of a jerk but at least he's a cool jerk. Recommended.
Its an easy class.He gives alot of quizzes but they are easy since he sends them via email the night before so you can do it onine /open notes. He gives lots extra credits to make up your grade. Just make sure you do all the work required events and extra credit and its an easy A. Make sure you check ur email often thats how gives out instructions
Do not recommend to ANYONE! You'll hate him from the moment meeting him. He thinks he's the funniest person ever but he's really not and he's just a jerk. He will literally never grade your work..you have to drive to the farthest places in Los Angeles all the time and write an easy paper on and he didn't grade my first paper until the end of semest
His class is very interesting, he goes into great detail about our ancestors and how we've come along since the Spaniards. He gives out a lot of quizzes but you are able to do them at home. If he says an event is mandatory, go to it! If you decide to take his class, be ware of his sarcasm. He can be very annoying at time.
BEST PROFESSOR AT CSUN! I love Gerard Meraz. All you have to do for the semester is write 4 major essays that go into the portfolio, attend Day of the Dead, 150-word personal dictionary. Great, funny prof. he has taught me so much! He has a way with words! Thank you for everything , Gerard Meraz! You are someone I look up to and respect very much!!
It was an O.K. class. You only reed two novels and must write an essay for both. There 2 required events and MUST attend! Quizzes can be difficult but they are take home so it is manageable. It's fair class just do all your work and he offers LOTS of extra credit. Last day of class is Mandatory.

Meraz is an ok professor. Yes he can be rude & he does have 1 mandatory trip to East LA. The quizzes are more like tests because they're 50-60 questions BUT they're take home quizzes(except for 1 or 2) so you're able to use any notes. Attendance is necessary if you wanna pass this class. The class was tolerable but I'm sure there are better.
Easy class. Really makes you think as a result of his discussions. You constantly have quizzes & reading. Quizzes are long, ranging from 50-80 questions but they are take home so make friends & split up the work! He does have a strong personality and can be rude to people who just play around. Gives cool extra credit! I would take him again.
Meraz gives alot of work and not a lot of time for it. He gives like 70 question quizzes you can take home. Not hard just time consuming. His class is interesting, you just have to keep up on the work. Alot of extra credit given. Hes pretty chill.

Now this is what a teacher should be!Let me give you some advice if you take him:Find a group at the beginning and stick with them! He sends out 40-80 question online quizzes weekly so help each other out! There was two big group projects! Also, he gives a lot of notes so you should be with a group just in case you have to miss. Highly recommend!

The first day, lecture,and test will be over whelming. He does weekly tests their emailed test you do with your group at home then bring it next class.(I recommend you have a big group like 10 ppl)He will teach you the truth about history, how gangs started,sex and the virgin marry,dreams,music,you,art .This class will blow your mind its worth it.
I wouldn't recommend this professor to anyone. He is so lazy. He emails you 80-90 question quizzes 15 hours before they're due, and then has the class grade each other's tests. All the essay take forever to be graded. He also sends you chapters upon chapters of reading for the quizzes. He hardly lectures, he just has us read those clippings.
Meraz's lectures are full of true stuff. Literally you are blown away every class, but he's such a sarcastic, rude, and conceited man. Take home quizzes almost 80 questions, 2 projects, 2 essays, and mandatory East LA event. Meet people and create a group, it'll help! Overall his personality killed the class, but the subject was worth the course.

This guy is the worst person. I've had an A+ the whole semester and ended up with an A-. His final is not clearly written and only 3 people in the class followed the "correct" guidelines and everyone else got an F. He is not understanding and unsympathetic. Easy class overall if you are willing to put in work. You won't learn anything but easy A.
If you don't put down specific answers on tests and quizzes you'll get them wrong, even if the answers are similar. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He won't help you and will insult at least every person at least once.
He breaks down essays for you so it can be easier and so it wont seem like it is too much. I liked his class because it was interesting, he was funny and sarcastic but sometimes he takes it to far and says really rude things.
Gives some good lectures, but sometimes off topic even though it makes sense to him. He makes homework hard perhaps emailing it a day before it's due instead of emailing it the day he assigned it. Better to try to work together with other people because you won't have any help. His test have an exact answers of what ever he said in the lecture.
Meraz lectures about crazy stuff that will blow your mind, but he goes off topic and is all over the place. He gives off an arrogant vibe and seems as if he literally does not care at all about his students. He wants people to ask questions, but then answers them in a sarcastic & very rude way. Make friends in this class and you'll be good.
He's a good professor. He encourages you to ask questions and comment on topics. He does say weird but mind blowing things which makes for an interesting class. THERE IS A LOT OF READING! Find yourself a group of people to work with on the quizzes and you'll be fine. Gives LOTS of Extra Credit opportunities! Overall, its a straightforward class.
He is actually really cool and I am going to miss him. He makes sure that you learn to get your act together and your responsibilities together. He offers plenty of extra credit because he knows he is a harsh grader. The class is worth taking, and if you want a challenge and new perspective on life, he's your guy!
Might be intimidating but its seems better along the semester. Be ready for a lot of reading. He will expect to participate in class so have questions about the readings ready. I really like his class would recommend it. Like I said readings are important. Go to class sine he will have questions in the test about his lecture, a few.
Read the syllabus, there are many extra credit opportunities. Many assignments require you to go to off-campus events. He takes a while to grade essays. Go to class because there have be random group presentations and assignments during a class session. Class seems like a lot in the beginning, but in the end it was okay.
His way of "teaching" US History is assigning multiple links of readings and videos of all negativity about the US with a quiz up to 100 questions even though he never lectured about them. He treats all of his students with no respect. Very bias and racist. You know he's bad because he gives tons of extra credit. He comes to class to rant about US.

I actually enjoyed this class. If your a good writer this class if easy. I've taken harder classes at CSUN. I will always remember what he told the class, "IF you get an A in my class then any other class you take at CSUN will not be hard". He was right, just give your attention and time to this class and you'll see the good outcome.

If you don't like to read this class may not be for you, however you will open your eyes to the real world. Everyday you'll learn something knew. the quiz are long and answers are very specific but if you work with a group you'll get an easy A. This professor is the hardest professor I have ever taken. If you hate reading, this class is not for you. He assigns questions and readings each week. Work with a group! If you do all your assignments correctly, you will pass his class. If you're up for a challenge, take this class with this professor. All I can say is good luck, you'll need it.
His lectures are really interesting and he wants you to open your eyes to the real world. Other than that his class was really annoying with tons of readings each week and quizzes worth more than 150 points each week. Don't take this class if your not ready for work, reading, or taking the train to LA for mandatory events.
Actually really enjoyed this class. Although there are quite a few readings, the questions are like a word search plus, they're very informative. Not to mention the tons of extra credit opportunities he gives. Very big influence in my first semester at CSUN.
Professor Meraz is terrible. We have to go to random events that have nothing to do with class. We also have to read a bit too much. Essays every Saturday. This is an online class but somehow i'm struggling keeping up with this than my other upper divison classes! He needs to relax! Do NOT take him, he's rude and condescending as well
Don't really recommend Prof's Meraz class. He assigns mandatory events that don't really pertain to class , 60 question quizzes every week. And the final was a video project that was graded on video quality in a chicano studies history course?
Professor Meraz's lectures where never boring. As he told us. "Chicano Studies is a multi-disciplinary discipline." You'll learn many things. There is plenty of readings sent to you by email. Every section has its own quiz, and the cool thing is that they are take home quizzes that you can work on with partners. (Group work is encouraged).
Meraz is a really cool guy but his class can be a little overwhelming at first. It's really important to read the material because all of the quiz questions come directly from the reading. that said, the readings can be a lot and since the quizzes are take-home, I would recommend working as a group.
he overall is intelligent when it comes to the history but at times and be very opinionated and lectures heavily on them. Essays every week and if you dont have the same conclusions as him it coud be tough, does not really consider "other students."
I took this guy in during my first semester of college in 2012 and I can still remember how bad he was. He claimed his class was like a "bucket of cold water" and proceeded to spew very opinionated nonsense at us in an attempt to "open our eyes". Stuff like 9/11 being fake. The class isn't hard, but the professor is very annoying. Some like him.
If you're looking for an easy A, don't take this class. We had four page essays due every single week, along with additional essays on some weeks. We also had some 80 question take-home quizzes and he's a tough grader.
Meraz was a pretty difficult professor but at least hes interesting when hes teaching. The class will be as described: 2 essays, at least one 50-80 question quiz per week (team up for your own sake), one fairly easy group project, and LOTS of extra credit (but dont rely on it). He gets sidetracked a bit, bit hell teach you a lot of new stuff.
If this is your first semester I beg you to not take him, he is very unprofessional and makes fun of his students. I'm surprised no ones been able to file a proper complaint towards him after the way he treats his students.
Dont recommend this class if you want an easy A. He was rude and petty whenever i would email him with a question !!! I purchased the textbook we were told to buy and i didnt use it once. I was confused on all the assignments because he would never give you a final due date.
Hes so rude. He can care less about any situations that are going on at home. He never responds to emails and doesnt even set a due date, so youll miss many assignments. He doesnt use canvas or anything like that he just uses email and doesnt communicate back. I dont recommend him for anyone.
This class consisted of a 7-10 page research paper, 2 other papers, and a reflection. Do NOT buy the book, no one used it once! Provides a lot of opportunities to receive extra credit.
Make sure you take advantage of all the extra credit opportunities he gives you an you'll be sure to pass. He also sends you many articles via email that he recommends you should read but don't have to.

This class is easy its a lot of papers the downside is the professor is not too involved at least in the online class you will not hear from him much at all in my experiences when I have talked to him he is insanely rude and the due dates for assignments were so unclear the due date on all pages say one thing and he says something else be wary.
He is rude & likes to undermine his students. You can't ask a question without him degrading you in front of everyone. We kindly informed him that he wasn't giving constructive criticism, but was just being mean. He told us to "put our egos aside & not let our feelings get hurt". Next class, he didnt talk cause he "didn't want his tone to upset us"

This professor does not care for his students. He goes over all 10+ of materials within one hour and just expects us to write a paper every week without teaching us anything. He is a TOUGH GRADER. Overall I would not take his class ever again.
The worst class I have taken at CSUN. The professor is very rude and treats his students like their dumb. You get essays almost every week and his writing structure is very confusing. He is a tough grader as well it seems like he forgets we are in a pandemic. I would not recommend this class to anyone at all.
He was very rude towards students in grading and would often times grade people right in front of the class in an insulting manner, the real material you learn in the class is from the research he makes you do for the projects. Overall he made the overall class environment feel unwelcoming and had students fearful of being insulted in their work.
This professor never responded to emails, provided any lectures or gave insight into the class. We were given readings online that would show up on canvas, then we’d write essays based on those readings within 4 days. He’d assign essays during holiday breaks with no prior notice so we had no choice but to spend our breaks writing these essays.
Great professor! He tells you up front thay he's a tough grader so if your lazy and don't plan on putting in the work or paying attention, just drop the class. He can come off as rude if you're a sensitive person to the real world. He doesn't sugar coat anything and is blunt, this give you a taste of what the real world is like. Amazing professor.
He is a VERY tough grader. Get ready to read and potentially get outed in front of the class because you are having trouble pronouncing words. He is very rude and is not afraid to make you feel dumb in front of class. The whole class was very intimated by him. I would NOT recommend.
Professor Meraz does not treat his class as a History class, but as an English class. Be prepared for rude and discriminating comments upon race, religion, and gender. Although, if you miss an assignment, keep an open eye for extra credit assignments. He's a tough grader when it comes to essays. Will take away a lot of points for one mistake.
The class was essay heavy as I at least wrote 6 papers throughout the semester. Make sure to not slack off and miss class as you can easily fall behind. Make sure to read his instructions carefully as he is nitpicky about his MLA format and will deduct points. Overall isn't an easy class but it is doable if you put in the work.
Text-heavy and writing-heavy. Wasn't hard to write or read, just time-consuming. Got full points on all my papers, but he does take attendance seriously. Missed one class and my papers were docked off even though I got full points in everything he required. Don't take this class if you can't write or focus on reading, he assigns reading every WEEK.
If you're thinking of taking this course I would consider NOT to. You can not reach him via email and will tell you to ask other classmates if you have questions. He is a HEAVY grader and is meticulous about MLA format. There are tons of readings & books that eventually you'll have to pay for, peer reviews, and new essays to be due EVERY week.
This class is writing-heavy and the professor is a tough grader. Stay on top of readings and assignments, and utilize resources like unstuck study to help with study prep. Overall a challenging but manageable course if you're willing to put in the work.
DONT take this class if you want an easy time getting an A. Everything in his canvas for an online course is ridiculously hard to navigate, and he has techniques that he makes you use when writing essays that I have never seen before. This class was a waste of time.
HORRIBLE. I've taken multiple 400+ level courses and this 245 was harder than all of them. He's rude when you have a question/concern regarding the course. Doesn't answer emails. He will kick you out of class for not doing an assignment properly. Brings his extreme political views into every lecture, I barely learned about chicano history.
