Not for the faint of heart. Dr. Smith will force you to do your research and back up your arguments. He won't hold your hand, but if you are making a sincere effort, he WILL help you become a better reasearcher/writer. He also appreciates good scotch.
This guy blew up in class at some guy who had a different view on a poem than Smith did. He made the kid leave class and then was so irate that he had to dismiss the whole class. I also had him for ENGL101. Brags about having highest drop out rate.
Research Writing with this instructor was really pretty fun- his instructions and expectations were clear and easy to follow. Creative Writing sucked; be leery if you don't write/enjoy sci fi. He has a good sense of humor but is very aloof.
just need to pay attention to class..pretty easy if you do...also the final is multiple choice...
Feels he knows everything. Difficult to understand what he wants from you. Publically yelled at and humiliated a student, didn't show up for the final but called and made the class make it up on their own time. Doesn't take his job seriously enough.
He is good, be prepared to have your work slashed. I have yet to look up what he got pushlished. Maybe he sucks, that would be funny. Has no clue what 1/2 our names are. He thinks this web site is a joke and will tell you that in class.
LIBERAL COCKY JERK. Brags about having HIGHEST DROP RATE! Will judge you and argue with you instead of helping you. I got an A in Eng. 98 and almost didn't pass with this jerk. He is full of himself and will make you work HARD.
Dr. Smith is arrogant, short-tempered, foul-mouthed, and pushes his agenda above all else. Someone who "teaches" English should have a good enough command of the language to express himself without constantly using language that is offensive to
Knows his material fairly well, but the way he teaches is annoying and one-sided.
I got A's and B's in Engl 101 and 102 with Finley and got a B in this class. I would still never take a class with him again, because I don't want my self-esteem lowered. I have society to do that.

He's a cool teacher. I really enjoy his class even though there is alot of work.
I was in the same class with the previous person who said he publically yelled at a student and missed the final. This class was easy, but don't expect him to accept your interpretation because if he doesn't agree with you, you will pay. I got an A, but I will never take a class with him again.

really helpfull in your work and devotes his time
Be concerned about your work and take the responsibility to approach him. He's honest and holistic, and that shouldn't hurt if you snuff the ego and learn how to be a better writer. He expects an improvement by the end of the class... but certianly isn't the gym teacher who would flunk the fat kid.

People need to stop ****ing about this prof. This man is amazing at what he does. He can break down any paper. Do not have an ego in his class, his over powers yours. He is one of the only eng teacher I will take. He is VERY thorough, be prepared. You will spend hours perfecting your paper; however, it is totally worth it. You appreciate enlgish.
I don't know what everyone's boo hoo'ing about! He's a tough teacher, yes, but also honest, intriguing, entertaining, and probably my favorite teacher at Clark. I especially recommend him if you're an English major hoping to gain a better understanding of the subject, and want to receive an accurate assessment of your skills. He's very thorough!
if you don't like honest, critical feedback, don't take this class....but those are the reasons why he teaches well and helps improve student's writing.
one of the worst teachers ihave ever had!!!!!!!
AWESOME
Gives students not much room for opinions, or breathing room for that matter. He is a tough teacher, but does make an impact!
He is a really hard prof, he pushes you to achieve excellence. I hated his class at first, but he took time out of his schedule to help and I ended up doing really well. He's a great guy

He is a hard teacher but he will also help you improve your writing skills. He does have a very strong set of oppinion and tends to talk over people who are sharing their opinion because he doesn't think they know all the facts...but as a teacher he's pretty good.
he sux!!!!!!!!
This guy sucked- came into class and always talked about anti-Bush/tree hugging rallies that he attended up in Seattle and in Portland. Couldn't teach his way out of a paper bag.
Like a drill sergant, in a way... Really strict on some things, but explains things pretty well.
Awesome teacher! Very down to earth, explains things in real terms you can relate to. Strict on some things, then relaxed on others. Works you to your best, and want you to achieve your best work. Expects you to give your all. I wish I had him for 101
An arrogant ass, prances around inviting students to admire him. Reads his OWN work in class! Uses foul language, bullies students who don't hold the same political views he does, intimidates timid students. Comments on students' works are not helpful. If you want to learn to write creatively, don't waste your time in this class--It won't help.
hes an ****. he made me and fellow classmates very aware of how much we sucked. told me i didnt know what i was talking about when the topic i chose ive studied for 4 years. he likes attention and likes praise for his own. i think he teaches for the ego trip, personally.
Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT take this professor! Even as someone who loves to write, I dreaded coming to class because of this man. STAY AWAY!!!!
I took the class online, and although I passed with an A the Instructor is not helpful AT ALL. I emailed him several time's regarding certain things with no return email. He teaches english 101 and 102 also but he doesnt know how to spell worth crap? Seems to me that an english teacher should know how to properly write, and spell correctly. D-
good.
I actually liked him so much that I took multiple classes from him. His ability to teach is amazing; moreover, I honestly believe him to be a genuine teacher. Also, his beer references are quite amusing.
While this was a fun class, Prof. Smith was unable to spell check his tests, and at times it was impossible to tell what he was asking for because the grammar was incomprehensible. When questioned on tests, he responded he didn't want to argue (not helpful with explanations). I would not recommend him for any English class.
He's extremely harsh on grading. He is bad about answering questions and he has horrible grammar and spelling. Alot of times it was difficult to understand what this man was saying. I took his online class and aced every assignment and test. I failed both papers, which were equally as good as the assignments I wrote. He was very unhelpful-stay away

He cares about students!!!
He always is willing to help.
Awesome Professor. Take his class!
Hardest teacher i've ever had. I would NOT recommend him to anyone. Very condescending. However his alcohol and weed references were hilarious made up the only positive thing to come out his class
He is a great teacher! Understanding and accepting. Allows you to write about what you actually want to write about! No matter how controversial. Loved this class!
Greta teacher... Really smart just a hard class... Ugh. DON'T TAKE IF YOU PROCRASTINATE!
Ton of reading, assignments are fairly easy if you read, midterms are very hard, especially if you don't read. My point is, you have to read ALL of the reading for the week, which is A LOT. Don't have much interest in the class, but would recommend him to any student wanting a challenge. Interesting teacher, just very hard to get an easy A.
He was extremely arrogant and pedantic. There was a TON of reading to do and you had to do every bit of it to get a good grade. I would definitely not recommend him to anyone.
Smith actually teachers you, he is a good teacher but don't take him if your looking for a easy grade.
He is a great teacher if you actually want to learn something. You have to be able to read and understand what you read to pass. Dr. Smith works with you a lot! he give great feedback and helps u every step of the way.
He's awesome, but you definitely should NOT procrastinate! But still... he's AWESOME!!!!
LIBERAL DEMOCRAT! I wrote my paper on the Second Amendment and the right to conceal... Oops! He was a good teacher but very Biased. Apparently NRA isn't a credible source?? I Practically failed because of my sources which I would have fixed if he would have offered me help but instead he wanted me to "understand that people should not have the ri
He's very intelligent, definately knows the material he's teaching, and really makes you think. But he's very liberal and makes sure students understand that! Overall, I'd say he's pretty good.
Horrible teacher. Thought i would like this class but i hate it because of him.
He is very hard. The things he teaches in 101 were what we were supposed to learn in 102. Very critical. All subject matter used in class was very liberal so if that isn't you then don't take it with him.
If you want to learn how to write and dont mind being challenged a little, i heavily recommend this class. took his 101 and enjoyed his style enough to continue. he is a pretty nice teacher if you take the effort to learn.
I didn't like his class at first because I thought he was being too picky and it's only eng101! But now I am VERY thankful I took him because he taught us very well- my writing skills improved quite a bit! If you're not lazy- take him!
Worst teacher I have had since I started college. He is very liberal and if you aren't...you won't do well. I suggest using this site and picking your teachers wisely. I loved my English 102 teacher and got an A. While learning a lot and the criticism was rational. The only thing I learned in Smith's class was to use this site. LOL
Dr. Smith is a very professional and quality instructor. He makes every attempt to inspire the class, and reach every student on an individual level. He is a master in his subject area, and good at what he does. He makes every attempt to reach out, of the student is willing to reach out as well.
He's such a great teacher! But he is strict and professional so it depends on the student, if you can handle that. Personally, I thought he's great. He is helpful.
Awesome teacher!!! Strict but you don't learn if the teacher won't be strict with you!!! Everybody should take this teacher!!!
Smith is an extremely smart man, which makes me respect him. Whenever discussions were made, he knew exactly what he felt on the subject and could tell you why on many different levels. He really knows how to write and can teach very well. However, one must be willing to learn to get a good grade. Favorite college teacher so far.
Didn't like him at all. Not clear, wouldn't recommend you take him. He also cusses, and is very blunt. He also is very straight forward, he'll tell you exactly what he's thinking. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
Avoid at all costs!
Took an online 102 course. The instructions were very unclear and when questioned he responded irritatingly and either repeated himself or refused to answer. He penalized for late ass.so I complete work, then when low turn out,he would allow more time with no reward for the rest.High expectations with too little guidance, inconsistant and frustrating
I know when reading comments on this website many people don't truly believe what they read; however, i'm doing you a favor when i say do not take his class! such a waste of your time. I stuck through for 5 weeks and then i had to withdrawl. He is a harsh grader. If you don't agree with him, then you get bad grades! Stay away from Dr. Smith!!!!!!!!
Don't take an online class with him. His instructions are limited at best and you will do way too much work for the amount of credits you're getting. Plus he makes things due at really weird times (Tuesday at 9am and such). I did not like him.
"Dr." Smith's intro to poetry class is horrible. I've been at Clark for almost two years and "Dr." Smith is the worst instructor I've ever had. He is completely unorganized and switches up deadlines on you at the last minute. He is rude and inconsiderate. To pass this class I had to write what I thought he would like, not my own opinion.
I took poetry as a required credit and out of my own interest. I love wrting poetry and post on poetry.com frequently. I was hoping this class would be fun and helpful. Boy was I wrong! He is horrible, he made me cry on his harsh critiques. The better the class rated you the harder he tore you apart. It is like a power game for him.
I liked this teacher a lot. Although instructions and the syllabus were a bit unclear, he always replied to e-mails with questions about assignments. He is NOT an easy teacher, but he is incredibly helpful--even stating that he will NOT give out any grade less than a 'C'. He will instead give you an 'R' for Revise and walk you through revisions.
awesome teacher, smart and knows his stuff. i learned a lot from him!!!
He is a tough teacher. I had a hard time learning from him.
Awful teacher. He would say not to use certain search engines then at the end say search those search engines. Didn't make any sense. Told me my work was crap. Said my sources werent credible even though I met with him to go over how to do it. He told me how he used to do homework hung over? Cool. Doesn't help me any.
Awful experience. Instructor seemed to guide topics to what appeared to represent his personal beliefs. Does not listen to what is being said, when questions are asked.
I would not recommend this teacher. He has confusing guidelines and weird due dates for assignments. I would check to see if anything was due and the due date would be for example tomorrow, then when I go to turn it in it turns out it was due at 9am, which is impossible for me to meet since im on the campus by this time each morning.
Dr. Smith is my favorite teacher. Though his due dates are strange, I appreciated that he would delay them if a majority of his class was struggling. He is always open to give feedback and he doesnt try to sugarcoat it, so I left his class a considerably better student than when I first enrolled. Do not take his class if you cannot handle criticism
I liked the teacher, the class was tough but I don't know if it's just because I suck at writing papers, or if he is just a strict grader. But he always offered to help.
I took three of his courses and liked him in all of them. When I needed help, he was very willing to lend a hand, sometimes even push due dates back for me. Make sure you take notes on everything he says, studying them will get you a good grade on tests and assignments.
He really helps you when you need it. He allows you to set up appointments. He is great at giving feedback on what you need to work on. Great Teacher!
he helps and makes sense. but you really waste your time, especially hybrid class
Dr. Smith was a great teacher and I learned a lot from this class. although he is a tough grader, it is for your own good, he is very in depth with his feedback and writes about as much feedback as the length of your paper. schedule an appointment with him? done hes there. ask for an extension on a paper? done, youve got it. awesome teacher. :)
You either like him or you hate him, but I personally enjoyed him immensely. He is funny and makes his lectures interesting. He is a tough grader and his comments are harsh, don't take it personally. Willing to help if you need it and cares about students who put in the work.
Prof. Smith's classes are extremely helpful for learning how to write. You'll need to put in a lot of work, but Prof. Smith is always available to answer questions or give feedback, and you'll definitely learn something. If you procrastinate, it's over. Keep up with the work! Many claim his criticism is "too harsh", but it's very helpful and clear.
He's very well educated and opinionated. He's a tough paper grader, esp in ENGL 101 and 102, but I learned so much. His office hours are incredibly helpful, and you can fix papers if they're in on time. Really really talented and intelligent teacher, 100% recommend, but don't expect an easy time.
He was very scary at first but as the class progressed, I began to feel more comfortable. Though the class wasn't that enjoyable, it wasn't that bad either.
He gives you a lot of feedback on your papers and lets you have a chance to redo them which helps a lot. But be prepared to do a lot of work, he may be understanding and push back a couple dates but he is not a push over. Also if you want brownie points call him Dr Smith not Mr Smith. PS don't do your paper the night before (he knows).
Professor Smith is very well educated and takes his career very seriously. He can be a really tough grader. He seems like a nice person overall despite his harsh grading tactics. He can be a bit bias and opinionated when it comes to students topics for their research papers. If he doesn't like the topic of your choosing, you definitely will know.
He was rude, condescending and seriously should not be a teacher. He doesn't help and get frustrated when you ask questions. His class is hard and the material hardly makes any sense. Do not take his class.
Gerard is a very, very tough grader and at times he is not at all clear. He is, however, helpful and gives great feedback. I would recommend him if you are up to devoting your time to homework and improving your writing and knowledge of the English language.
He's a little old-fashioned in his methods but he is a really good teacher and seems to know what he's talking about. If you listen to him, you'll find yourself learning a lot. The classes, for the most part, were fun and he helps you through every step of the writing process for the final so you'll get a good grade if you do the work.
A good teacher but does not always clearly explain homework or assignments.
Not a fan of this English teacher. He picks out all the little things wrong and grades you unfairly. I took the online class and he preferred you to take pictures of your assignments and send him an email of it. Very old fashion and strict. Would not recommend him.
Would not recommend this class to anyone! Grades pretty harsh on everything. You'll be working on a paper (12 pages, yay...) the entire quarter which he has really specific rules and ways to do it (no imagination or creativity for you). Good luck.
Smith is one of the harshiest teacher I had encountered so far. He is a very tough grader and doesn't give very insightful feedback on your paper. He also doesn't allow you to redo assignments. I haven't learn much about how to write a proper college lever paper in his class and killed my love for English. I recommend you take Christina Smith.
This class was very unclear and difficult to follow. If you take this class online there's a lot of figuring out where things are on your own, as if it's expected that you would know EXACTLY where the information is without his help. He's very blunt and not particularly nice at all. I don't consider myself stupid, but I felt like he thought I was.
This teacher unfortunately has killed my love for English classes completely. I felt like no matter what work I turned in, he thought my work was complete garbage and trash. I felt worthless in this class, andthat is something that really discouraged me. The final paper took me from a solid A, all the way down to a B, despite working so hard on it.
In my experience, he is a tough grader with unclear feedback. I couldn't understand his assignments. And he expects you to read a lot.
I did not like Mr. Smith at all. I considered dropping out of his class several times. Incredibly unclear, and too tough of a grader. Would not recommend taking his class.
Very picky, grades work too harshly, and doesn't check his facts. He often uses the wrong piece of information when you ask a question, does not proofread his work for any errors (INCLUDING DUE DATES FOR ASSIGNMENTS), and has very poor communication skills. If you email him asking a question, he will reply, it just won't at all answer your question
He'll ask you for one thing, and then downgrade your assignments because he wanted something other than what he told you. He is very impersonal, and isn't good at emailing you back with answers to your questions. His class is not one I would have ever taken if I could go back in time and schedule classes again. No one should ever take this class.
Dr. Smith is literally the worst teacher I have ever had in my time as a student. His entire 102 class is made up of assignments that mean virtually nothing compared to the final paper. Have a 94% A in the class for the whole term? Get an A on the paper to keep it. Get a B on the final paper, and your A drops to a B. His grading system is awful.
This class was incredibly unorganized and way too hard of a class for what it was. Dr. Smith is very strict in his grading criteria. The assignments require far too much time/effort. It can be a normal 20 or so point assignment but will take up over five hours of your day to complete. I'd never recommend or take this class again.
This class was a ridiculous! The amount of reading he expected per week was absurd for a three credit class! The reading is very tedious and by the end of the term no one was doing it, so he began giving pop quizzes. Dr. Smith is not clear on his expectations and a tough grader. I wouldn't recommend this class.
HE WAS GREAT!
This class was kind of a bummer.. There is SO much reading and every week you have to submit a 300 word paper which isn't hard, he gives you topics to write about. Also you have to reply to your classmates writings. The hard part is just finding the time to do so much reading. Just skip this one.
I really liked Professor Smith for my English 268 class. He does make you work for the grade you want to earn and assigns a good amount of reading, but that's what a lit class is meant for! As long as you follow the instructions, do the reading, and put effort into the weekly assignments, he will give you great feedback and grade you fairly well.
Dr. Gerard Smith is the worst teacher I have ever had. He is an English teacher and can't even spell correctly or use proper grammar. His assignments are completely unorganized and his due dates don't correlate well or make any sense. He grades really harshly. If you don't do something his way he will grade you down even if you did well.
If your looking for an easy class to take because you need the credits this is not it. there are 4 books that are required for this class, and if reading is not some thing you like to do and would have to force yourself to do it, then this class is for you. also an insanely tough grade, he just bleeds all over your paper ( marks all over it)
Yet another teacher that needs to be reminded that we indeed CAN'T read his mind. I remember I was sitting near where he was calling us up individually to grade journals, and he sat there and explained over and over to each one of us that we had done the assignment wrong. It somehow never occurred that maybe he didn't mention something? 0/10
Take Dr. Smith's classes if you want to learn how to write. If you are willing to put in the time required of a typical college class (15 hours per week) then you will have no issues. Feedback and answers to any questions you might have are always available. However, if you do not READ the assignments or textbooks, you WILL fail.
He gives amazing feedback on papers and always explains how you can do better, picking up off of what you did wrong. The bad side though is that he gave almost no instructions for the course. Everyone had to figure everything out completely on our own and the course was mostly self taught. He is HORRIBLE with instructions. Doesn't explain papers.
Good professor with a lot of knowledge in his field. There was an appropriate amount of work for the class, the grading wasn't harsh (intro level class) but the feedback was brutal. Whether good or bad, he was going to give you a lot of feedback on your work. He clearly cares about the subject and students. I would recommend him for poetry.
Dr. Gerard Smith at Clark College is easily the worst professor I have had in my time at this school. He assigns an insane and completely unrealistic amount of work to be done as you work towards submitting one giant 12-page paper at the end. He is sloppy in his organization, spelling/grammar, feedback, and overall consistency. He is not qualified.
Good teacher overall, sometimes grades harshly. Always available for help and will make sure you understand what you need to do. Can be condescending at times, but also has a sense of humor. One major issue is I was never sure if the questions he asked the class were rhetorical or not. Would take again.
Dr. Smith was actually one of my favorite professors! However, beware if you can't handle blunt/sarcastic feedback. Dr. Smith doesn't tolerate nonsense, and expects high quality work. The truth hurts and Dr. Smith isn't afraid to to tell you. If you can't handle that, then he is probably not the best choice for you. His classes require tough skin!
Isn't to organized and repeats himself a lot. Tends to go off on tangents
This class was unclear and way too political.
I usually write good papers but he gave me a B for my final paper. If you have problems with grammar, this class is not for you. He will grade you down for a few grammar mistakes.
I genuinely enjoyed this class. Smith has a great sense of humor and is a very nice man in person although he may seem a bit blunt but he wants you to work and leave his class with good knowledge on the subject. He is one of the best professors in his field. If you have issues on anything do not be afraid to ask questions he wants to help!
Grades heavily on grammar, doesn't give good feedback. Unclear and goes off on opinionated tangents. Always address politics when totally unrelated to the topic.
The worst professor I have ever had before. When proposing topics, he only allows topics he enjoys and acts like he knows everything about any topic you bring to him. I've been studying the topic I brought to him for the last three years and treated me like I had no idea what I was talking about. He teaches us out of a book and is highly political.
Worst instructor. Makes you feel horrible, his class was humiliating for me. I could never understand what he was trying to say and there is never ending homework. Honestly just made me want to stop trying. His standards are way too high and shows little respect to those who don't share his views. If you have trouble with grammar, withdrawal.
I am not very good at writing, but Dr. Smith made this class very enjoyable. He is very nice in person and is always willing to help (reach out for his help and it will really pay off!) I can understand why some people may get offended over his feedback but just know he just wants to make you a stronger writer. Great professor and a very nice man!
I took Dr. Smith's class online. I ended the quarter with an A on the final paper and an A in the class. However, the negative reviews of Smith are accurate. He uses his position as a pedestal & is lackadaisical in postings/instructions (many typos, brief). I'm sure Dr. Smith is a good writer when he cares about something. I perceived him as lazy.
I knew a lot of people who had taken his classes and only had bad things to say, I went in expecting the worst. He honestly does his job- he teaches. I learned a lot from him not only about the curriculum but how to get a good grade in a hard class. Do not take if you aren't willing to work hard for a good grade.
While Smith is clearly very knowledgeable about writing and English, the way he gives instructions and feedback is very weird. There's always tons of typos, and he's not always super clear as to what he wants from you. He's a very harsh grader, and in some cases it made me a better writer, but in others it was just frustrating.
He's will work with you if your experiencing difficulties with assignments or life challenges so long as you communicate with him. Tough grader but he will push you to become a stronger writer if you view it as such.
Dr. Smith may seem a bit tough at first but he is actually a pretty solid Professor. Took his online poetry for an elective and ended up enjoying it quite a lot! Just following the instructions and you'll be in for a good grade. He gives great feedback on all posts and is a fair grader. Put in the effort and you'll do just fine!
He has many typos in his posts. Very harsh feedback but fairly decent grader.
He is a tough teacher but if you put fourth the effort he will challenge you to reach a higher level of technical writing and analytical processes. Really cool person but doesn't mess around. He is somewhat flexible and will work with you if he notices your putting in the effort and you contact him ahead of time.
Loved poetry until his class. Does want independent thoughts, it's his way or nothing. Very disrespectful person, likes to put down students. Will never take a class from this man again.
This was an online poetry class I took and you have to write a poem each week and grade three people's poems. He gives great feedback and helps you be the best writer that you can be. He liked two of my poems so much that he recommended them to Clark College's Art and Literacy Journal, The Phoenix. He is also a really easy grader.
Dr. Smith is a very thorough professor and is always willing to help! You have to put forth the effort though. If you show him that you want a good grade and keep up on the assignments, he will absolutely work with you. His feedback is very detailed and I feel like I am a better writer for having taken his class. I would absolutely take again.
Very clear, concise instruction. Do what he says, and youll do very well. The hard part is that his instruction isnt simple - theres much to read, and many rules. But back to clear and concise - he lays out in no uncertain terms how much time youll need to devote to his class, what to read, and how to follow the rules. Great feedback, too.
You had to write a poem a week and just grade 3. Some of them were pretty good. Gerard gave lots of feedback and I think my writing improved. This was helpful if you want to write better song lyrics and the class wasn't hard. My friend had him for an in-person class and said he was very tough but that wasn't the case for this class.
Doctor Smith is a great professor, he will give honest and sometimes harsh feedback and he is quite fun to be in class with. Doctor Smith does not tolerate nonsense in class, so make sure to stay focused and on task. In the Science Fiction class, make sure to read everything before class, as pop quizzes are common. Overall, an awesome professor!
Dr. Smith is nice, cares for his students to do a good job and pass his class. He understands things of life in a reasonable way. However, he makes you write a research paper on a social justice topic, which was annoying for some of us in the class. He does swear a few times per class period, and every example he uses is something from the news.
Never spend more than 30 minutes on any assignment or paper. A bad professor to have if you take pride in your writing and strive for perfection. The only way to do badly is to just straight up not turn in assignments. Lectures are mostly discussion based.
Such an unhelpful and mean mad. I took his poetry class and he did not seem to care that people poor their hearts into poetry he didn't grade on his opinions but he did spew them and it hurt. He was very harsh, he would say we were too cliche, unoriginal, unspecific about what was wrong, wanted us to change crucial parts of our story. 0/10
Was not clear with deadlines, requirements. Hard grader. Really strict about paraphrasing plagiarism.
Was feeling really good about this class until I submitted my final paper (the one you work on for the entire term). He gave me good feedback and after fixing it and sending in the final, graded me down heavily for using his feedback. Overall he was nice and very honest, but contradictory and unfair to students doing the research paper.
Asked for help multiple times, he was "too busy" which I get, but he didn't help. I used all of his feedback in my final essay. I had almost perfect scores the entire quarter, he gave me low markings on my essay. Emailed him with concerns and why his grading was actually politically incorrect in some aspects. fail my reflection essay as a result.
He does give feedback that can give you a different perspective but he gets way too political. Big on plagiarism, got a D on the final for it and I could guarantee I never did such a thing. Tried talking to him and said I can make a case. Anyway, make sure you check plagiarism on that final paper that's worth half of your grade.
Feels very arrogant, and generally didn't think he had a helpful or friendly personality. Comes across condescending at times, and as though he feels he is so great at the subject that it is beneath him to teach you anything "basic".
His instructions were always very unclear. He makes many typos and grammar mistakes as well. When working on my final paper he gave me feedback and once I applied that feedback he told me it was bad. Why give feedback if you are going to say it's bad? I normally do very well with writing but his class made me feel horrible.
Gerard Smith is a great professor and gives great feedback for your work, but for someone who struggles with reading comprehension and building research papers this class was an absolute pain. He grades really hard and doesn't care if you struggle with this topic.
There's about 1 3-page research essay due every week PLUS your final essay. Extremely tough grader and will mark you down for plagiarism if you slightly mess up a citation. You can't even choose any topic, it HAS to be social justice related in your degree field. If you want to have a life, take this class on its own. You will drown in homework
This is a professor who will actually spend time to read your work and comment. He will be honest and blunt in both his criticisms as well as his encouragement. You would be wise to take either to heart and adjust accordingly if your goal is actually to become better in your writing/poetry.
If I could have any teacher for english it would be Dr Gerard, he has been nothing but amazing this whole term. He gave me extensions on every assignment I asked for without needing to explain myself. There is only one essay you do and every assignment is an assignment to help you for the essay. He is literally a life saver. I adore him
Professor Smith was a very good professor for the semester of English 102 we took. He is not a very difficult professor, although the course is pretty rigorous. You cover a lot of material and all of it contributes to the final essay about Social Justice (wasn't a fan of only one topic, but it is what it is). I would take his class again.
This class consumes a lot of time. There are several assignments due every week which are very time consuming but do not count a lot towards your final grade. There is a lengthy social justice research paper due at the end of the course the is 60% of your grade.
Professor Smith's ENG102 is a rigorous course, but he provides helpful feedback. The social justice research paper is a major challenge, but tools like unstuck study can make it more manageable.
