Ochoa has a good sense of humor so the lectures are pretty fun. His midterms aren't easy but they're fair.
He is amazing
He is the best professor I have ever met in UC Davis. His lectures are really interesting and I will definitely take his 2B class.
Good lectures and cares about his students. I hope he stays teaching at uc davis!
Pretty good 2A professor. 25% M1&M2, 35% final, 5% discussion, 10% lab. Curves at end. He posts "recommended" HW problems from the textbook, but I never found them that useful. Since there isn't any assigned homework it is really easy to get behind. I suggest buying Enderle's reader because his midterms were VERY similar to those practice problems
I think his didnt explain the important concepts enough but more examples. I do not find his lectures very helpful.
Enderle sets a high bar for chem professors at Davis and Ochoa comes a very close second. He cares about his students and tries his best to give fair grades. Midterm was exactly like Enderles practice exams. Your final grade gets an overall curve that comes in handy, especially this year when the final was worth 55% of our grade.
good professor with humor lectures. maybe a more generous curve will be better for lazy student like me
Great lecturer who seems to really care about his students. Good use of examples and was always helpful in office hours. I do wish homework was graded so there was incentive to not fall behind, but that's more my problem than his. Midterm was very fair and similar to Enderle practice exam. Curve wasn't great but reasonable.
Hes a good professor, very clear and direct. But theres not many things that can help your grade. Theres only test and lab grades. If you do poor on your test the lab is only 10% which wont help you. Theres no homework grade or anything that will show the professor your actually doing your work which is hard. Test determine you in this class.
I took Ochoa's class his first quarter teaching at UC Davis. His lectures were easy to follow and he uses the same presentation style as Enderle. His exams were very fair and he gives helpful practice midterms. He doesn't use OWL so exams are worth more I actually got to know him as person as he was really nice, funny, and always remembered my name
Examples given in lecture are easy, but exams are really hard. Lectures are sometimes confusing because he makes waaaay too much mistakes (which is because 7:30 is too early, of course) Avoid if you can.
This professor is a really nice person, but not a great lecturer. He makes a lot of mistakes (even in the answer key for midterm). If you are good at chemistry, he is ok. But if you are new to all the materials, avoid him if possible.
He curves the class at the end of the quarter. I thought I was going to flunk but then I ended up being fine because the curve was gracious. He is the most caring professor I have encountered so far at UCD. I love that he wears his Super Mario Bros. T shirt to lecture.
Dr. Ochoa is a cool guy, but as a lecturer, pretty sub par. His lectures consist of a lot of examples, and he rarely actually explains the concept he's demonstrating. I've found that the notes I take in the class are just supplemental to when I inevitably teach myself at home. I don't recommend him for Chem 2B.
Ochoa is a really nice and caring teacher! I like his lecture style and he's really good at answering questions. His tests aren't too bad, but you really need to work for them. The only criticism I have about Ochoa is his homework. I just wish he used OWL instead of giving us problems from the textbook.
Ochoa is a great professor to have- he is very clear in lecture, does lots of examples, and follows Enderle's reader very closely. His exams can be pretty tough, but if you do the optional hw it helps a lot. Very personable and one of the best gen chem professors to have, in my opinion.
Ochoa gives very clear, informative lectures and is always willing to answer questions. The textbook can be used for his optional homework problems but isn't necessary. Lectures aren't mandatory but labs and discussions are.
Ochoa gives lecture in a very clear manner. His has optional homework problems, but they are not really useful. If you did not take AP chem, this class is still going to be fairly easy. If you took AP chem, then this his class is pretty much a guaranteed A+. Midterms are easy, do his practice problems and you are good to go. Do study for the final.
Ochoa is awesome. Admittedly, he does make a lot of mistakes in lecture because 7:30AM is "too early", but his lectures are very clear; his presentation style is a lot like Enderle's so it's really easy to follow along. He doesn't assign OWL homework. His tests are not easy, but they are completely fair. If you've never taken chem, you'll be fine.
I used Prof enderle s reader the whole time , because his lectures were too confusing- he made way too much mistakes and couldnt explain concepts clearly.
Professor Ochoa tries to be clear in his lectures and most of the time he achieves it. Also, his lectures are very similar to Enderle's style. In comparison to other Chem professors, he is a solid choice for chem 2A.
The midterms were difficult but not impossible, but the final was really challenging and there was a generous curve. Some problems were from the worksheets in the weekly discussion which was mandatory. His lectures are clear and straightforward, similar style to Enderle (his YT channel helps a lot too).
Solid choice for chem. Really good lecturer that gives you the notes beforehand. He made a couple of mistakes but it was a 7:30AM lecture. Midterms are difficult but fair. Curved very well. I was able to get a B by going to discussion and using Enderle's books. Never did the homework and rarely the discussion sheets XP
The professor is clear with grading and curves overall grade at the end if necessary. Do the practice reviews to prepare for exam and Enderle practice exams because his tests are similar to those.
Ochoa is a good lecturer, style similar to Enderle. His practice exams are reflective of the exams themselves especially the key points in which he'll test you on. He posts the lecture slides in advance so you're not frantically writing it down during lecture. He's a good chemistry professor and I'm sure he will get the same hype as Enderle soon.
Ochoa is such a good professor! He does a lot of example questions during class and gives you all the necessary information in class so you don't have to worry about self-teaching yourself. Test questions are very similar to the Enderle practice exams so just use that to study!
Ochoa is a great professor and person. His lectures are very clear and tests are fair. He runs his class similar to Enderle but with a better curve! If you get Enderle's reader and understand what is going on in class you will do well in the class.
OCHOA!! A true icon. He is such a great professor and really cares about his students. His lectures are very clear and he always takes time to answer our questions. He is always super organized and knows what he is talking about. His office hours are super helpful and is always willing to explain things again. He is awesome!!!
Dr. Ochoa teaches chemistry in a very straightforward way that can easily be understood even if you've never taken chem before. The exams are fair and are very similar to the practice exams he provides, just be sure to put in the time to truly understand the material. He curves well and is overall just a really cool guy.
Ochoa was an excellent instructor. His lectures are easy to follow and he explains subjects well. Discussions are mandatory, though mine was used mainly for the weekly worksheets (which aren't required, along with HW). He makes it very clear as to what to study and provides numerous practice tests. Labs are pretty straightforward.
He still seems fairly new as a professor and seems to still be working on lecturing. His explanations aren't always clear but he does many many examples in class and gives optional homework assignments (that you should do). He's very nice and really seems to want his students to understand the material.
An all-over great professor! He has recently started teaching so sometimes he will make a test to hard or easy because he doesn't have much experience writing tests, but he will curve accordingly. The only issue I had with him is that he grades almost entirely based on tests.
Amazing teacher! His curved saved me, for both Che 2a and 2b! Just get above average on every test and you will get a B. Doesn't do minuses. I found myself actually learning the material, and enjoying it. I was rarely confused in his class. He's very entertaining, too. He keeps students engaged. I am not very good at chem, but he really taught well
He makes many mistakes in his lectures and his extra credit questions are so unrelated to the class material that theyre unfair (for example, how old is he?). Makes jokes in class that are fairly funny, but his disorganized manner is super annoying. Also very unresponsive to emails and doesnt hold review sessions. Decent lecturer though.
Hes a decent professor up to the final. He didnt even teach some of the stuff on the final, honestly I dont even think he looked over it before he gave it to us. Literally said we didnt need to know some topics that were on the final! It was really unfair, and many people left the final angry. His curve wasnt great either. Be careful.
A decent professor but he's new, so seems to be trying to copy Enderle in everything he does, even teaching off Enderle's reader. Extra credit questions are pretty bs, like "how old is he" or "what movie was so and so in". Explains chemistry concepts fairly well. I would buy Enderle's reader if you can afford it, there's lot of notes to take.
Pros: OK lecturer, no HW Cons: extra credit questions are random and unrelated to chem, a good portion of the final was never taught, curve was tiny
You can tell he is new at this and has not developed an efficient and understandable way of conveying the material. He rushed through information, did not explain things thoroughly, and spent most of the time doing examples that were not helpful because he did not explain the concepts behind them in the first place.
Most of Ochoa's problems are small ones only due to him being a new lecturer; he's slightly disorganized, tends to make little mistakes etc. However, he is always clear in his Office Hours/one-on-one explanations. Subject matter is tough so lots of studying required. His lectures are entertaining and useful and he's overall a great prof.
Ochoa's lectures are dense, but he posts the lecture outline beforehand-- I would recommend studying the topic before lecture because its easy to get lost without having some idea of what he's teaching. There was a slight curve (I went from a B to B+) and he doesn't give out minus marks, which can help if you're at the lower end of your grade mark.
Dr. Ochoa is phenomenal. His lectures are straightforward and help you understand chemistry - this is rare for Davis CHE2 series professors. His exams line up with everything that he teaches. Highly recommend.
He truly cares about his students. I have had him for 3 quarters and I love him, would totally recommend.
He's an interesting professor, his lectures aren't boring and his midterm 1 is not hard, the average is 77%.
Ochoa was a great professor who really knew his Chemistry. His lectures covered much of what was on the exam, and he explained topics very clearly. He does not give out minus grades, so you can get a C even if you were supposed to receive a C-. Tests are hard though, and especially the final, really tough class overall.
Ochoa is an okay professor. I had to learn on my own but that's most science classes. 1st midterm was pretty easy but midterm 2 was harder bc everyone did good on the 1st one. Final wasn't too bad just make sure to study all the material.
Ochoa overall was a pleasent teacher to have. His class required you to put a lot of work in to remember different mechanisms and functional groups, but if you did put the work in then it shouldn't be too hard. First midterm was easy, second midterm had some curveballs but wasn't too bad, and final was a breeze. Also gives a very generous curve.
Ochoa was a good CHE 2A professor. First midterm easy, second was difficult same with the final. You have to put in a lot of effort, but thats expected in chemistry. Curve was generous.
Ochoa is direct and usually clear on his expectations. His grading for the most part is fair. He was GREAT for gen chem. His curve for O chem is small but if you go to his/TA OH + AATC reviews, you can get an A. He is new to o chem and I believe he will get better with time. Hes a solid choice for chem and his review sessions are actually helpful.
His lectures are amazing and clear! He brought his pet lizard to show examples of blackbody radiation, how can you not love that. I had morning classes everyday, and Professor Ochoa adds color to his lectures to keep his students awake like story times. You're on your own for studying but he provides Cengage as a resource.
Professor Ochoa is a really great lecturer. He made it easy to understand concepts and had review sessions for every midterm and the final. He doesn't do OWL and has suggested homework problems from the textbook which are perfect practice if you don't understand a concept. He is also generous with the curve.
Dr. Ochoa's class is interesting and his lectures are helpful, but general chemistry can be difficult if you don't put extra effort into learning the material. The tests tended to be difficult, but the past exams he posts are really helpful!
Professor Ochoa has been amazing! His class really helped me prepare for college. Even though the second midterm was basically all hard problems/trick problems, it wasn't unfair because we did cover everything in class. His lectures are great: everything is explained clearly and cohesively. I never once felt lost. Best of all, he's REALLY funny!
Ochoas lectures are amazing. It doesnt go too fast at all but straight into what you need to know for the exams.I think besides Enderle, who everyone is praising, Ochoa is second to the best general chemistry professors here. He was Enderles TA, yet he has his own style of teaching instead of lecturing exactly from Enderle readers.
For a two-unit class, this was a lot of work without enough lecture time. That's not Ochoa's fault though. He's a good lecturer and the tests were mostly fair. Not everything was covered in lecture that was on the tests, so you still need to review the text and do lots of practice problems. Overall a solid choice.
Really enjoyed Ochoa for Chem 2A. Not only is he very passionate about the subject matter, he also makes lectures very interesting and engaging. He cracks a few jokes and tells a few stories here and there. If it matters he has great handwriting and writes everything during lectures. However, you need to put in 100% effort if you want the grade.
Prof. Ochoa was a good lecturer and kept things interesting in class but I found his tests to be unfair. During review sessions he said what would NOT be on the exam, yet put it on the exam. He put problems on exams we barely/didnt cover and made it profoundly difficult. Midterm 2 and final were insanely hard, EC questions were completely random
Ochoa is knowledgable and taught things well but the tests were HARD. Our second midterm was an average of 50% and I didn't have nearly enough time to finish it. 7:30 AM is also a rough time slot. Make sure to do extra practice problems. I didn't do enough. Would also recommend following along with Enderle's reader and going to other profs reviews.
Hes really great and goes over the material weel. Its pretty straight foward and gives you everything to succeed. Hard to get an A but does curve and give extra credit on the test.
Though his tests can be difficult, he explains things really well in lecture and goes over everything that could possibly be on the test. Funny, approachable guy.
He is the PERFECT example of what a GOOD professor should be like! He is so understanding and does whatever it takes to make sure his students succeed in his class. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to have him as a professor and if given a chance I would definitely take him as a professor again!
Honestly an amazing professor who goes through each concepts really well. If you do the practice exams and review that he gives you, failing is very difficult. Do the work, and you'll probably pass with a B.
Fantastic lecturer. His lectures are very clear, and he always makes sure to answer questions and explain things so they're easy to grasp. You'll definitely need to go to lecture to do well in the class. Exams can be tough, but they're still fair and the overall grade is curved. Super cool guy as well.
If you dont really know chemistry beforehand, then dont expect to get a good grade. He does not make his grades clear and doesnt really curve. If you go to the TAs or Ryan in the SLB expect to get eye rolls, Air Pods in, and sighs when you ask questions. If you get average scores on the tests, then youre going to get a C. No extra credit
Great professor who really cares about his students doing well in his class. Does not post lectures so you have to go to class to get the notes. Midterms are mostly based off what you learn in lecture.
Solid choice for chem professor. He genuinely cares for his students and his office hours are helpful. His lectures are great and he uses a lot of examples. His midterms are comparable to the practice exams he provides, but the final curve isn't too great. He genuinely relates to students and wants us to succeed.
Ochoa is very knowledgeable on what he is teaching, but overall the test are real hard. There is a lot of material need to be known for each midterm, including the final. He is genuinely a nice guy, the curve isn't the best.
There's a lot of reviews on here saying Ochoa's curve wasn't great but that all depends on the average in your class. I took this class during fall quarter and the curve was about 12%. My friend's that took this class winter quarter had a small curve but that's because their midterms were A LOT easier than the ones during fall quarter.
Winter quarter 2019 was unusual, he made the final optional, but he didn't have the fair grading policy. MOST IMPORTANTLY, he didn't respond email on time, which made me do the wrong choice for the optional final. If he responds to my email on time, I can pass the class for sure.
Professor Ochoa was great! I hadn't taken chemistry in about 4 years so I was a bit worried, but Ochoa was very straightforward and nothing was too difficult if you put in the time and attended lecture. Make sure you don't skip lecture as he does lecture pretty well and doesn't upload slides online. Tests were fairly similar to practice/past exams
I loved Dr Ochoa! His lectures were always so clear and he gave you all the information necessary to succeed. He was never boring and I found myself really enjoying his class. The tests were a bit challenging, but what do you expect, its chem. If you do all the practice tests he provides and discussion wks theres a high chance you'll do well.
Tests are exactly like the practice
Nicely done for making a 50-minute midterm with 80-minute questions. TAs did not care if about people working after deadline. Smd.
My favorite part about Ochoa is how straightforward he is - he tells you exactly what you need to know and doesn't waste time on tangents. Chemistry is such a difficult topic, so giving us the necessary info in a simple and clear-cut way is great. He is very kind and listens to student feedback to improve the class.
Weekly online quiz questions always have flaws. Lecture materials cannot match textbook content and are disordered. Many female students like him because his speaking speed is slow, but please care about exam and lecture more! A 50 minutes MT1 had 23 questions, which was overwhelming.
His lectures were engaging and tests were similar to practice exams.
Comments below said he is straightforward in lecture, yes but he does not explain things carefully as you enter the second half of quarter. He refused to add points in weekly quiz as there was no correct answer! All slides are ready before quarter starts, but he releases them one by one very "on time".
ya his tests are pretty very similar to his practice exams but he always makes it harder by adding something to a problem he went over in review that he never actually shown us before. his lecture are very basic and don't really translate well to the quizzes or tests (your entire grade) and he doesn't give partial credit for long answer questions
Tests are very very unfair. NOTHING like what he shows in lecture, and even includes silly Che 2A and 2B MC questions that have NOTHING to do with the class. Literally no partial credit on LA, showed all my work and got 0 points for correct answer with secs instead of mins. Showed tutors questions and they were surprised at the questions he asked
Seemed really nice in the beginning of the quarter, which was nice considering it was online and stressful. But our 2nd midterm he graded it the harshest I've ever seen anything graded EVER. Took 3 emails to get ahold of him, and when he did he was so NOT accommodating and obviously barely read my email. Doesn't seem to care much about his students
He's a nice guy, don't get me wrong. But he really needs to up the way that he teaches. In lectures, he seems to focus on easy problems and does not really prepare you for the tests. Make sure to study on your own and do not study off of the lectures, they will not be helpful for you. However, I did reach out for help and he seemed to care about me
He did the best he could to be adaptable to the current situation. His lectures are straightforward and a carbon copy of enderles reader but I feel like his exams were kind of a screw over. They werent too similar to lecture and if you wanna do well on them, you better do practice exams and discussion worksheets.
His lectures materials are so simple that they dont cover a lot of stuff we need to know for the exams. Prepare to work outside the class. Do every practice exam!
He graded our exams extremely strictly and his lectures were not very relevant to his class.
His lectures were pretty simplified, straightforward compared to what shows up on tests, so practice tests are a must. They were tough and he didn't give much partial credit. He was lenient on pushing back some weekly quiz dates and dropped our lowest score. He had the best curve out of the other prof imo and no minus grades!
Dr. Ochoa explains his lectures very clearly, and since he writes everything out as he is going he is able to explain slowly. I understood so much more this quarter of chemistry than I did in 2A and 2B simply because of his lecture style! I improved a whole letter grade from before, even with a tougher curve this quarter. Tests were open-note.
Ochoa was alright. He went through the lectures pretty quickly so it was kinda hard to catch up, but he would be helpful after class when you emailed or met up with him during OH. The exams were easy in my opinion but the extra credit was dumb honestly. There was an exam question based on a movie, so it wasn't really fair if you never watched it.
This was during the online Spring Quarter, but his teaching style is great! Explains very clearly what he wants from you and what is covered on the exams. Drops lowest scores on weekly quizzes. Practice exams helped out a lot. Tests were open-note. Might have to study more outside of class since each concept is so dense.
Dr. Ochoa was cool personally, but was not generous at all during SS1 and finalized grades without posting cutoffs or anything since he did not want emails regarding grades. His curve was 1-3% at most and that did not help a majority of students (only those in D range benefitted). I also don't like his dismissiveness toward student concerns.
CHE2C is a hard class but I love Dr. Ochoa! He is very accessible, and he wants everyone to do well. He gives a small curve that curves A to around 88% (for CHE8A too). He is super funny, explains things clear, and is a nice person in general. Go to office hours and do all the homework. You will get a good grade.
He's a cool dude and gives really engaging and useful lectures. Tests were pretty average difficulty, but he kind of rushed a lot of things during lectures. I had to go over some topics again after the lecture from not getting enough info. I don't think I would've done as well had I not taken AP chem in high school.
Really cool professor who cares about his students. Will always respond to questions in chat and will hold lengthy reviews. Lots of practice for midterms given in the form of past midterms. Very easy class if you took AP Chem in High School. Lectures cover everything you need to know. Simple pre-calculus and derivation. Recommended!
Professor Ochoa's lectures are very clear and easy to follow. The content is interesting, and he does a great job of explaining everything. Exams aren't easy, but they're very fair. He listens to students and was very accommodating, especially given that there was a lot going on Spring 2020. I highly recommend taking him if you can.
Doesn't reply to all questions on zoom chat or email. He himself said that a question on an exam was worded poorly and it caused a lot of confusion, but refused to give back points. I technically got the question right, based on how it was worded, but he graded it differently that how it was written, so I got a C instead of a B on a MT. BAD Curve!!
Horrible professor for remote learning. He doesn't curve the class until the end of the quarter if he sees it necessary, which makes it hard to know what your actual grade is. He wants the class average for tests to be 60% and penalizes the class if above by making his tests harder. TAs do most of the class, so if you get a bad one, good luck.
Hardest class I've taken so far. If you don't like chemistry or absolutely love math and complicated equations, then this is not the class for you.
He is an extremely tough grader. He makes the test avergae a 60% and if it's higher he curves down! Never has curved up if average happens to be lower. Does not offer any extra creditand homework assignments take hours upon hours.
The lecture is great but labs made me want to literally kill myself. Are you serious?? 2 labs and 3 worksheets due on the last week right before finals? How the F#@k can the school pretend things are normal and pull this sh!t on us. 3000 people dying a day, but nope I gotta finish this stupid lab or else I'll fail the course automatically.
I genuinely hate chemistry, even before this class. To be fair Prof Ochoa has great lectures but EXTREMELY hard exams. On exams, the class average was about 60% and this man said "I was expecting it to be lower, so I'll make the next exam harder." He provides practice tests but they are NOT identical or entirely helpful to prepare for the exams.
This class is great Ochoa goes over the basics for chem really well. In the end it is up to you to put in the work and practice to get a good grade. Practice exams are very similar to the actual exams. Also he curves the class and not individual test grades and theres no A- grades so the kids at the top already got their curve:).
Lectures are basic, owl homework is long, and the hw/labs are only 27% of your grade makes motivation low. If you aren't a good test taker, don't take this class exams are hard and graded by TAs and written with other professors. He does seem to care about the kids and responds well to chat questions and he is interesting. Good guy
if you aren't a good test taker, don't take the class. Exams are 73% and are pretty hard, his goal is for you to get a 60%. His curves are much, but he's a good guy. Good about answering chat questions and is helpful during OH, but your TA is gonna be your only saving grace really because they will be the only ones you can contact and such really.
SUPER DISAPPOINTING. His averages were low and his curves are trash. He wouldn't even release cutoffs because he knows they do not make sense.
Great lecturer but he manipulates ur grade by making tests super unfair if the class is doing too well. He aims for a 65% average for his exams, and he has said I know Ive written a great exam when nobody gets 100%. A 79% was not considered a B. Class avg was 71.2%. What a tyrant. Take him if u want to learn, dont take if u want an A/B.
no curve, bad instruction
Very cool guy at the beginning of the quarter but let me warn you, do not take him. His averages were low but he cheated us on our curve. And would not release cut offs. I can't believe I actually had a shot at an A
Great professor, if you study and put in the work, easy A.
Professor Ochoa is a good teacher, but his curves are really bad, so you would need to do good his midterms and exam cause the tests are 73% of the final grade total!!
He's not a bad professor, but also not a generous one either (especially during Covid times). He could and should have done a better job with the curve and chose not to. If you can do chemistry really well, then take him. But I would recommend taking it with someone else.
Good lecturer, but sometimes contradicts himself. Tests are difficult. "Curve" was super sus- could've just not studied this quarter and gotten the SAME exact letter grade. Homework took ages to do and some of the methods used by OWL don't correspond with those used in lecture. Lab was very hard and didn't really correspond to class.
Carried a B the ENTIRE quarter but didn't do well on the final exam (still got 7% above the average score). It dropped my grade 8% and the so-called "curve" only benefitted a select few individuals. My grade didn't even move with the curve. He is totally unfair in his grading/curve distribution and this class really jacks up your GPA.
Ochoa can teach but man what is this curve a B RANGE IS 80%-85.9% but the C range is 57%-79%. That makes no sense he gave out more A and during covid with so many cases, he thought we could perform like a normal class setting. Not accommodating at all but good teaching style.
The curve was unfair and such a small B range
His lectures were pretty standard. Homework assignments (lab, disc wksts, OWL) were ok as long as you didn't procrastinate. I just wish he gave better studying resources. A lot of his prac exams were from other profs which were not the most helpful since every professor writes questions in their own way. The curve mainly helps students with Ds.
Ochoa's lectures are much better than the other professors I had! OWL HW was reasonable, and he provided extensions on multiple occasions. The tests end up being a large part of your final grade, but I felt that they were quite fair and the averages for the class were quite standard. The curve only helped people at the higher and lower ends tho :((
Class was very test heavy but that was made very apparent before. Grading curve was wonky, but it was exactly what he explained to us before hand. Material and problem types he tested on were no surprise.
Worked really hard and got above average on all three exams... Especially during the pandemic, Ochoas curve was very unreasonable. 79 was a C+ and so was a 69, very disappointed. Im sure this wouldve been a better class to take in person, or maybe if Ochoa had more empathy for students...
Had him for 2A and 2C. I'm pretty bad at chem, but his lectures are great and made the concepts understandable to me. Very responsive to questions and doesn't make you feel dumb for asking. Exams are difficult, but the practice exams help. Curve varies a lot per quarter; I wouldn't recommend depending on it. Overall, best chem professor I've had.
Has lectures that are easy to follow along with. I enjoyed the class overall. I should have tried harder but that was all my fault. His exams are similar to practice ones!
He wants to show how strong he is by basically giving no curve at all. Unless you are reaaaally good at chemistry you won't get an A, even if you are above avg on the final and both midterms. I got a 95% on mid I, 76% on II, and 80% on the final and 100% on everything else and just missed the cutoff for an A. worst curve of any chem prof
Prof Ochoa is clear in his lectures but hes really tough on grading and makes the midterms really hard the first time. The curve was ridiculously useless and did nothing to my grade. I was at a B but the final brought me down to a C. Also, my final exam was graded incorrectly so I reached out and got no response. Unfair.
Champion of the failures. I really struggled this quarter due to the pandemic and his curve was oxygen inside of a gas chamber. The curve was very accomodating for students in the lower grade range, and saved me from re-learning electochem.
Being online hurts more than it helps. He makes the tests even harder + longer bc they are open note/internet, but both of those are completely useless. His lectures are easy to follow but they're way too simple compared to the difficulty of the tests. Also 2 labs and an entire new unit on the week right before the final on monday? please.
Dr. Ochoa is a great lecturer. He knows what he is talking about and we were tested exactly on the content he lectured in class. His tests ARE hard if you don't know the material, but for the most part many agree that he is straight-forward on tests. To do very well, you have to study and review what he teaches. In the end, it comes down to that.
Ochoa is very direct--what he expects you to learn in class WILL be on the exams. Compared to the others, Ochoa seems to have the most homework, and personally, I found it overwhelming near the end. Only curved up this quarter, practice exams are similar to the real ones, however, lectures are too simple compared to test content. Solid professor.
Ochoa is a great lecturer! He even has review sessions before the midterms and finals. His tests are hard if you don't have a firm grasp of the material. To succeed in this class you need to make sure to study and review.
Lectures are very clear and easily understood - never needed to look at the textbook (though he did give recommended textbook probs for extra practice). Just make sure you fully understand discussion wksts / owl homework and youll be fine. DO PRACTICE TESTS AND GO TO REVIEW SESSIONS (qs very similar or recycled)! One of my fave profs at Davis!!
Ochoa is a very good lecturer who makes midterms that are reflective of practice exams. chemistry is hard so you have to put in a lot of effort to do well in the class. this final wasnt the best since it was written by other professors, not very reflective of our practices. his curve is lackluster unless you are <2% away from the next letter grade
the curve is a JOKE!! the class was hard as hell with the final being completely inaccurate to the midterms and practice tests, yet the curve to get an A was ridiculous. you needed to less than 2% away from a 90 to qualify which is ridiculous considering other professors policies. only people who CHEAT are winning.
His tests are very straightforward and similar to practice exams. He does a good job of going over the basics if you put in the work and do lots of practice problems and learn the material well you won't have a problem getting an A! Yes tests ave. are around a 65-70 but the tests aren't difficult if you study well :).
Dr. Ochoa was a really good lecturer and he really seemed to care for his students. His tests are not bad if you study and have good notes, but all of our exams were open note, which I think made them easier. Go to office hours!! Unfortunately, he will not round and the curve was decently small.
People who say the curve is harsh don't understand how it works. Dont listen to them an 88% was an A is normal curve. Other students I talked to in different professors had similar curves. Ochoa was a great professor and it's unfortunate to see him getting bad reviews from students with self gratification. Needless to say, you need to work for an A
Watch all of his lectures and do write the practice tests he provides then you will be fine on the test.
Ochoa is a great lecturer and makes sure you understand the material. His tests were tricky, so the book and practice tests are needed to pass. Grades are heavily reliant on the exams. He is okay with his curve, as it only helps people on the brink of failing.
Dr. Ochoa was nice and seemed to take into account what students were struggling in during review sessions. Multiple choice sections were harder than the short/long answer. Go to the review sessions itll help but you have to work really hard for an A in the class. The curve doesnt help unless youre failing the class.
Prof Ochoa was really great! The class was hard, but his lectures were really good and he always answered questions. Tests were pretty hard. Overall, he's really funny and he does care about his students.
I really enjoyed Professor Ochoa. He always seemed like he really cared for his students and he spoke slowly enough to take ample notes. He was very good at responding to emails. A family issue came up making it so that I could not take the midterm on the given date, but he gave me so many different options. It is chemistry, so make sure to study.
I loved Ochoa. He was really straightforward ab what material you need to know. I really liked the way the class was set up. Obviously, it's chem so you need to work hard especially for the tests but study and you'll fine. The only thing I didn't like was that he never had his camera on. Overall, he's a really good professor.
Chemistry is not my best subject. Lectures were alright, but midterms were quite difficult. Lectures and practice exams werent enough to get good grades on the midterms for me. There was a lot of workload for this class. I ended up barely passing with a curve, but still passed. Has an alright passing curve.
I've previously taken his class before and got an A, this content is just more dense and complex. He's a great teacher, but a lot of work is needed for you to understand. His lectures are quite funny and entertaining. Just ask questions to clarify things and even though attendance isn't mandatory for lecture, I would advise you to still go.
While chemistry is hard and I barely passed, Ochoa is a really great guy that makes chem interesting. He's funny and I personally liked his lectures a lot. Yes the tests are hard, yes there's a ton of work (pre/labs, worksheets, OWL, etc/), but at the end of the day you probably need this class to graduate so, don't worry- Ochoa is a good prof.
Professor Ochoa did not show his face on zoom lectures. Zoom chemistry is hard to make very interesting without lab experience, but professor Ochoa would try and lighten things up by showing off his lizard and his gaming. He would answer questions posed in the chat, but would get through all the content in his lecture, which was beneficial.
I would trust this man with my life. He reads the chat during lectures and answers all questions, is hilarious and super sweet. Exam review questions show up word for word on exams and his lectures are very easy to understand, no chem background needed. Grading is a bit harsh, but he lets you drop one midterm and curves at the end of the quarter
Ochoas lectures are very clear and easy to follow. He wants his students to succeed and is great about answering students questions in and outside of class.
Awesome!
He made me like general chemistry again. He is super helpful and a good lecturer. He is understanding of the student's situation and will let a student take the final sooner or later if discussed with him in advance.
Professor Ochoa genuinely wants to see his students do well in his class. I loved him and his class. Although the midterms and final are weighted pretty heavily, he gives you all the resources that you need to get a good grade. Do the practice tests and attend review sessions!!
Literally the nicest most understanding professor I've had so far. He literally dropped one of the two midterms. Has 2 guinee pigs a bearded dragon and a gaming pc. What else do you want? Lectures were SUPER clear imo, he also answers questions in chat constantly. Lab is fine once you get in the groove of due dates.
Dr. Ochoa is probably the best chem professor I could've hoped to have! He is so clear when answering questions and all of his material is extremely organized. Also a great communicator! You can tell he cares about his students and wants them to succeed. The midterms and final are hard but he adequately prepares you for them. Get him at all costs!
Dr. Ochoa is an amazing professor. His lectures are always interesting and engaging, and his work is clear and organized. He went out of his way to do review sessions for exams for us, too! To make things fun he'd sometimes show us his bearded dragon, Nina. Overall, Dr. Ochoa is a genuine, funny, and kind guy, and I would 100% take his class again
Ochoa is the best prof I've had in my first year. His lectures are very clear and easy to follow. He genuinely cares about his students and his exams are fair game. The labs can be quite annoying but are doable. He was extremely considerate of what students are going through in the pandemic, he even dropped our lowest midterm. Take him for CHE2A!
Professor Ochoa is one of the most caring professors I ever met. Pay attention in the lectures and you will get an A easily. There is no A-, B-, C-, etc. So, getting an A+ (about 94 or above after curving) is also very possible.
Super likable and funny guy with an endearing personality. His lectures are really good and simplify the concepts. The tests are very easy and he ended up dropping the lowest midterm. Labs and OWL homework take a decent amount of time. Overall amazing choice for CHE2A
Dr. Ochoa truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed! One downside is that there is a very minimal curve (don't rely on it!) but the tests are nearly the same as the practice tests so its reasonable. I didn't take chem in hs so I was worried I would do poorly but Dr. O is a great lecturer + v helpful during OH! My fav prof! Take him!
Dr. Ochoa was an amazing professor! His lectures were detailed and he always stopped to answer questions. His midterms did require a lot of studying, but he dropped one for our class. He was available during OH and had review sessions before every exam. He also had a bearded dragon that he would show. Overall, he was amazing and I loved his class
Dr. Ochoa is a very chill and caring teacher. He was very accommodating to students' situations. You definitely have to work for an A. I recommend studying his practice tests and review sessions for tests. Grades are based on 2 midterms, a final, & homework. He also drops lowest grade & doesn't do minus grades. Tests are open note and open internet
This comes from a person who has absolutely no experience in (and was bad at) chem. He easily explains new concepts effortlessly AND slowly and answers everyone's questions. He truly cares about students and their learning and drops a midterm grade. His exams were fair but the TA's grade ruthlessly, I had to fight for points and got 5% back.
Prof. is very good at explaining new concepts and the grading is pretty fair. Exams are difficult but not unbearable. Do the homework! Discussion participation is required but not synchronous. Strict on giving extensions; the TA asked for "proof" that I needed it when I asked so it will be difficult to get extensions if it's a non-medical reason.
Professor Ochoa is amazing! He is just so good at explaining concepts. His lectures are NOT boring and are actually informative. He does a lot of practice problems in class. If you watch the lectures, you should be able to ace his tests. His grading is a bit weird, benefiting students mostly in the A+, A and higher B+ range. He doesn't give (-)s.
I was cheated off the A. I needed 87% on the final for an A and I scored an 85%. A 0.10 curve is essentially no curve at all. Turns out I literally could've googled net ionic equations and typed exam questions on Google and I would've had the A. Thanks for teaching me a lesson early on in my uni career to work smart and not work hard :)
I was only slightly of of a B because curve was not as good as Ochoa may have mentioned, but it doesnt retract from him being amazing. He genuinely conveyed himself as a caring and thoughtful professor who cared about the wellness and performance of his students. Dropped lowest midterm and doesn't give minus (A-,B-,C-) grades. Absolutely amazing.
Dr. Ochoa is a great professor. His lectures are really clear and in a great format for the class but the main problem I had with CHE2A was the structure of the labs. Some of the content for the labs isn't taught in lecture but is on the final so in that sense it can seem somewhat disconnected. Also a pretty fast paced course. Good choice overall.
If you put in the work, your will get a good grade. The practice tests he gives out are really important to success on midterms and final. Very fair and he made chem enjoyable!
A lot of assignments and labs, but they're good for learning the content. The lectures were pretty good; sometimes they were confusing but most of the time they were very clear and informative. Prof. Ochoa is very enthusiastic about the class and makes it enjoyable.
Professor Ochoa is the best Chem teacher I have ever had, and I had an amazing HS teacher. If you took honors Chem in HS, this class is mostly review. Whether or not you have taken a chem class previously, I HIGHLY recommend his class. There are so many good things about his class, but I can't fit it in here, so take his class to find out!
One of the best professors I've had at Davis. Clearly passionate about what he does and that's reflected in how successful his students are. This class does have a lot of material to go over, and theres a lot between the discussions, prelabs and labs, OWL hw, and lectures, but it all is super beneficial for your learning. Highly recommend him!!
I love taking his class and him as a person! he's really funny and he won't make you feel sleepy during lectures. he will help you if you need help (in which i wish i took advantage of). he's really approachable and nice to his students. his lectures are easy to follow but be prepared to study extra hard for his exams and finals bc it's difficult.
I had Ochoa for Che 2A and Che 2C and I have to say he's one of the best professors I've had for chemistry. I had to retake the 2A as I failed Enderle's but in his class I was able to feel more confident and get a better grasp in the subject. He makes it easy to understand by doing step by step problems and makes it feel comfortable to ask for help
Professor Ochoa is one of the best professors I've ever had. He presents information in a way that's easy to understand, and he's really funny. His review sessions were helpful for the tests, and I didn't think the tests were that difficult. He also didn't given minus grades (so if you would normally get an A- he gave you an A). I loved his class.
Truly one of the best professors for chemistry. I'm awful at chem and ended up doing fairly well in the class. He makes chem really really enjoyable and his exams are pretty fair. Definitely do the practice exams bc he likes to reuse questions and they honestly help a lot
Hes a great teacher, as in he clearly explains concepts carefully, and his lectures are easy to follow. I never had to look something up outside of class, which is rare in a chem class. Hes young and he can really empathize with his students.
Best chemistry professor at this school. Super enthusiastic about class and really cares about the subject and therefore teaches very well. I SUCK at chem and was dreading having to take ochem, but Ochoa made everything so easy to understand. This is the best I've ever done in a chemistry class in my time at UCD
Prof. Ochoa is one of the best chemistry professors Ive ever met. His explanations of the concepts are very clear. Chemistry could be the hardest subject to me, but I did fairly well in this class. There are a lot of homework questions. The exams are pretty easy tho. His review sessions are extremely helpful!!! The use of textbook is not mandatory.
Bless this man. I barely passed CHE2A-C because I really did not understand any of it, but I understood 99% of topics in OChem thanks to Dr. Ochoa. His examples are clear, he answers questions during class, and goes at a great pace. If you do the practice midterms and attend review sessions, you'll feel solid on the midterms
he was okay at teaching, but he would put things on tests that he would barely go over in class. he takes forever to grade, and does not communicate very well.
Best choice for ochem hands down (THANK GOD Nurco was fired). While curves are the new norm, there was barely any b/c he taught so well and I'm not complaining. Lectures (straight to the point and many cheatsheets) and tests (had problems he went over in class/review/practice exam) were generous. I hated Mastering hwk, but it's all 8 series ochem.
BEST chem professor I've had at Davis! Lectures were organized & clear & goes at a good pace. Exams are pretty reflective of what we learn. I thought I was gonna suffer in this class after doing poorly in gen chem, but Ochoa made the subject enjoyable & easy to understand. I wish he taught 8B, but he did set me up w/ a good foundation for it.
I am not the best at chemistry, but Dr. Ochoa explained the content extremely well. Furthermore, his tests pretty much reflected what he taught, so they were very fair. He is also super nice and he even shows his pets in class. He definitely made online learning more tolerable. Get him if you can!
Longaker's A range was 83ish+. Ochoa's was around 87.8+. Ochoa is undoubtedly a better professor but I don't know if it warrants a 4-5 point difference in the A threshold. Relative to the other professors, he taught the material well. BUT, there is a chance one may have an easier time getting a better grade with another prof, given Ochoa's curves.
I had Ochoa for both CHE2A and 2C and loved his class. He does a good job of going over the fundamentals and although he isn't Enderle he has a very similar style. I usually studied at least 4 days before every exam for an hour or two but overall as long as you put in the work, do your practice and learn as you go this class should be an easy A.
Ochoa is a great teacher overall. His lectures were nicely structured and practice exams reflected exactly what was in the real exams. There was a new lab website which was probably the only downside to the class since it graded pretty harshly. He curves exams, which was pretty nice as well. Also shows his pets at the end of lecture sometimes :))
Good lecturer, best one for CHE 2C, but he will mess with you on the midterms and final. Def best option for CHE 2C, I enjoyed going to lectures.
I would say to attend his lectures live, but he does record them! He does great and simple explanations and is always willing to re-explain concepts and problems! On his tests, he tends to give freebies! Freebies are usually from the review ( which I highly recommend)! Do all of the practices and reviews and you'll be good for the exams!
Loved Ochoa's class. Definitely recommend taking him. Just like any chem class, you have to work for the grades you want, I've never had a professor as organized as Ochoa, so the material he covers is always clear and easy to understand. Only issue is the small curve.
Questions in the reviews are on the midterms.
Ochoa is the best professor at Davis, and I am very sad he is leaving. His lectures are amazing and very clear. Take advantage of every resource he gives you. Do all the recommended textbook problems, all the practice tests, and worksheets because half of his tests are copy-paste. Best and most clear class I have ever taken at Davis.
Very good lectures, cares for his students, and funny. My first year chem experience has been great with Ochoa!
Runs a challenging class well. He's highly engaging and funny as a lecturer. Homework and study heavy but it infrequently feels like busy work. The lab section quickly outpaced the lectures in material which means they don't really supplement what you learn in class.
No quizes, but your grade is basically determined by the two midterms and the final. So incredibly difficult, but the professor is a nice guy. He does tend to teach and I feel like he forgets that his students are trying to learn. IDK if that makes sense. Basically he teaches out of his own brain and fails to know that we dont share a brain w him.
Very solid lecturer, makes the concepts clear and interacts with students every day. Lectures are v engaging and he communicates with the class over office hours/etc. Always has review sessions before exams. 10/10 would take his class again, pretty sad he's leaving Davis :(
Ochoa is a great prof and hilarious lecturer. He tends to give freebies during his reviews before the midterms and final so def study those. There was a lot of hw between owl and the lab but that's any chem class. His curve was just ok - worse than the other professors in the department. However, if you work hard you can def succeed in his class.
As someone who was terrified to go into a chem class, Ochoa made chemistry more bearable with his humor and super organized lectures. He spoke in a clear voice, making sure to explain why he was doing every step along the way. The best part about Ochoa was that his reviews were actually EXTREMELY helpful and copy-paste in tests. Sad he's leaving!
Dr. Ochoa genuinely cares about his students. If you're seriously concerned about your ability to succeed in his class email and speak with him individually; I did this early in the quarter and it was extremely helpful in providing me direction on how to best prepare for exams. Test will never have surprises: if you understand chem you'll do well.
Was a very easy class. Didn't attend lecture after the first week and just watched his recordings at 2x speed. Just his lectures alone are enough to give a solid understanding of gen chem. I'm not sure if the textbook is helpful but it probably is so go for it if you need it. His reviews before exams give every test question so that's pretty free.
Lectures engaging & funny, review sessions copy paste of exams, old practice exams also very helpful, fair teacher, generous curve got 55% overall & passed, it's still a hard subject so you need to put in effort, no minus grades, final super hard though because written with other professors so you'll have to use their practice exams
Dr. Ochoa is an amazing lecturer, chem is just a hard subject. He's a great personality, super smart, and is well respected. The class itself is just hard, but ask TA's for help! Also, his end-of-class curve is beautiful.
Ochoa is leaving Davis but he was a good chem professor. Homework gives good foundation but to prepare for exams from the discussion worksheets, lecture problems, and review sessions (copy paste to exam) and you'll be more prepared. Clear and engaging lecturer with good curve at the end.
Dr. Ochoa is no longer a professor at UC Davis, but he is a funny and engaging lecturer. His office hours were extremely helpful. If you did well in AP Chem during high school, then this class should be pretty straightforward. The labs and homework were very time-consuming. The midterm questions were taken directly from the review sessions he held.
Lectures were mostly comprised of example problems, and he explains them in a way that's easy to understand: drawing little diagrams, explaining where each number in an equation came from, etc. Gave test review sessions where the problems were often replicas of what was on the test- made tests really easy to study for.
Solid professor for a rather challenging course. His lectures are formatted well, even if they sometimes feels rushed. However, he makes a lot of time for office hours where you can get clarification on topics you don't understand. He's also a fun person to talk to with plenty of entertaining anecdotes.
Dr. Ochoa organizes his lectures very well and makes things easy to understand. He lets his students know exactly what he is going to test on and does not add any unnecessary information. The class is easy if you pay attention in class.
Super fun as a lecturer but his tests were almost nothing like the lectures. Pay attention to the worksheets in discussion and the review sessions always give freebies!
Prof. Ochoa made my first quarter of chemistry a breeze. He posts all his slides so they're really easy to follow, and he's a funny and engaging professor who let us choose his pen colors and stopped to clarify any questions we had. He put a lot of his review questions in his exams, so as long as you studied the provided material you'd do well.
Dr. Ochoa really is great. The content of CHE2A can be hard, but he gives specific examples in lecture that help. Be prepared for fairly difficult midterms and final. You just need to spend a fair amount of time studying and you'll do well. Recorded lectures with non-mandatory attendance, but lab/discussion attendance required.
Really great professor! So sad he's leaving. Go to his reviews as he literally puts questions from the test in the reviews. Overall really solid choice for a chem teacher.
he found a way to make a 7:30 AM lecture interesting. tests were hard but he went over very similar questions in his exam review session, so just keep up to date with exam prep materials. all lectures were posted online and attendance only required at lab and discussion
Dr. Ochoa was truly amazing. I had him in Fall Quarter 2021 and wish I could take him again. From his notes to lectures to funny stories, Ochoa made learning chemistry both enjoyable and memorable. 10/10 without a doubt.
Took him Fall 2021 and he was a great professor! His class' format was very clear at and he was a great lecturer. Great personality and put review session questions on his tests! His class wasn't hard for no reason, chemistry is just a hard subject.
Had him for 2A in 2019. Was a great professor then. Trust me guys, it really doesn't get too much better than him for the chemistry department.
Professor Ochoa is great. His lectures are easy to follow and he uses lots of practice problems. Tests are fair and very similar to his practice tests. Definitely go to his review sessions because he walks through problems that are very similar to the hardest problems on the exams.
At SCC, great professor, his lectures are recorded & he explains everything really well & provides good example questions. The hw is on pearson & there are "discussion" papers, both due weekly. The practice exams help a lot, the exams were in person during lab time. Not a particularly easy class but not too hard and prof Ochoa doesn't make it hard.
Ochoa cares deeply about Chemistry and it was really fun being in his class for the first quarter of freshmen year. Make sure to go to his study sessions because he provides some questions from the exam. For further success in this class, make sure to do the practice exams given and the discussion practice problems... which is what I didn't do.
