Taking Unix with German Gomez was one of the best decisions I've ever made at FIU. 6 Assignments, Weekly Quizzes (drops lowest two), a Midterm and Final (plus Extra Credit!) He demos the assignments in class. He is around the ECS lab to help and responds to emails fast. He has turned me into a Unix lover. He's young, relatable and funny, TAKE HIM!
Prof. Gomez is really great. He teaches from a real world perspective and wants you to learn how to actually do stuff rather than just the theory behind it. His assignments are tough, but you learn a lot from them. He will help you and is in the lab often. Really knows what he is talking about and truly wants his students to learn it as well.
Attendance is taken, not mandatory but this is a class your going to want to attend. His lectures are PP slides and amazing live demos using UNIX systems. He is very knowlegdeable and extremely helpful to students. Has 3-4, straight forward, question quizes on PP slides once a week. Answers email with 10 min and freq. in lab helping students.
This professor is very dedicated, work on the field and provides real life scenarios, his Power Point presentations are amazing. He is on the edge of Linux O/S. Great lecturer. He will though make you earn your in his assignments. All the material he provide is now the primary guide for Linux Administration. Take his courses, you wont regret it!!!
German graduated from FIU, works at FIU, and now teaches at FIU. So he's been through all the stages and is very well aware of how real the struggle is. 6 assignments, 12 quizzes, midterm, and a final. Pay attention and collaborate with your classmates on assignments, and you will survive. Much better than the alternative choice for this class.
German is an awesome professor. He is understandable, helpful, and he knowledgeable on the subjects. 6 assignments, 12 quizzes, midterm, and a final. Pay attention in class and help each other out. Also when he says "hint hint!" that means the questions will on the tests.
Tough subject, but he makes it enjoyable. His demos are very informative and it requires you to sit down and really learn the material. There is a quiz once a week, but it makes up most of the midterm and I'm sure final will be the same way. Gives extra credit in assignments and test. Honestly an easy class if you aren't a slacker.
Be ready to put in the effort if you want to pass the class. The material is not too difficult but you need to make sure you know it & understand it so that you pass the weekly quizzes. He grades the assignments using a script & sometimes gives partial credit so thoroughly check them before submitting. He always responds quickly & is mildly funny.
Taking it with Professor Gomez was great. This is the one class in my entire undergrad that I could honestly say, that I'd use the material moving forward in the real world. You need to do your hw and read if you expect to pass. Go to class because he will give you help with hw and quizzes. Weekly quizzes, a midterm and final. Would take again.
The longest i've waited for a response for a question/email outside of class has been 30 minutes, he is very diligent about responding and cares for his students. You WILL work hard in this class. I came in knowing very basic linux, and am leaving the class feeling very comfortable with doing commons tasks for Unix System Administrators.
I have spent more time studying for Unix then the rest of my 4 classes. With that being said, I have learned more in this single semester taking Gomez than my whole time here at FIU. Awesome classs, very tough, extremely worth it if you're trying to actually learn something. Midterm+Final+(6-7)Assignments+Quiz every week
Great professor 6-7 assignments, MIDTERM FINAL, weekly quizzes. I have learned more taking Gomez than my whole time here at FIU.
Great Professor! I recommend him 100%. The class is hard, but that's Unix. There's no way to make it easier, but you are going to learn very useful stuff for your career. Quizzes every week and about 6-7 assignments. Excellent grader. A lot of extra credit to help you. Take him for sure!!
Save yourself the fee and do not take this class online. It seems structured at first, but there is so much ground to cover that things quickly fall out of sync. The videos are horrible. Like the movie Unfriended but less entertaining. In person it is a totally different story. He goes over everything and takes time to answer most questions.
Great professor but hard class. You should take him if you want to really learn but if you want an easy grade don't even think about taking him. He cares for his students and will help as much as he can. How much work you put into the assignments is what grade you'll get. His videos are very helpful and easy to understand.
This class might've been the hardest class I've ever taken, but I've learned far more than any other class. He cares for his students so if you're struggling, don't stay quiet. ASK FOR HELP! You get what you put into it, so don't expect to do his programs the night before. Plus, he gives you plenty of chances to improve your grade.
This class is not an easy grade, you need to put time and effort . He answers fast when you message/email him. Takes his lunch time to review with you past assigments and why you got that grade, but only if you ask for help. YOU NEED TO SHOW INTEREST. He is friendly and always says in class "not all at once" when no one is participating.
Professor Gomez was one of the few professors I've personally had the chance to have that actually teaches the subject matter with passion and devotion, plus he's a sys admin. The class isn't by any means easy as Professor Gomez makes you work for your grade, or more accurately, you do. In the end, I've learned relevant skills for the job market.
Let me make this very clear, the class is HARD, but it is very rewarding. Start his assignments as soon as you can. He is fair, available, helpful, and he actually cares. I suggest getting a good group to work with, and don't be afraid to reach out to him for help, he totally will help you. You will learn so much though!
This course was so disorganized and chaotic. Professor doesn't do a very good job of delivering the material. Deadlines are moved around and you don't know where you stand with your grade throughout the entire course. Lots of ambiguity. Many of my classmates ended up dropping this course. Save yourself the headache by avoiding this class!
This professor is a know it all and wont give you a break. PLEASE if you do take this class, make sure you have a good amount of experience managing LINUX or you won't pass. Expect to work on your assignments every day of the whole semester. Even the extra credit is extremely hard!
Aight, first off this guy isn't BAD. The class is just hard, also the alternative is Robinson and he is the actual WORST. So as far as website construction is concerned, I feel like I learned a lot, and it makes his Unix class a lot easier if you planned on taking that. Hard but if you watch the videos he does everything for you.
Don't waste your time with this class, you have to write a bunch of shell scripts and no unix administration. Take something else.
Professor Gomez teaches you skills he uses day to day. that being said this class can become difficult if you don't take your time to work on the assignments. he gives plenty of time to work on assignments and his videos help a lot. he gives plenty of opportunities to improve your grade and is very friendly if you speak with him. Take this class
This class is NOT easy but it's the challenge that makes it fun. 5-7 assignments which I recommend to start them early! His quizzes are not too hard. As long as you try in this class you should pass with a decent grade but you have to work ! I learned a lot from him. Glad I took the class.
He's an inspirational professor. He'll tell you what you do not want to hear, but nonetheless what u need to hear. He's very knowledgable about Unix and takes the time to help his students. He offers office hours daily, putting u as a priority. He enjoys teaching which makes u enjoy going to class. Inside that tough exterior there's a kind heart.
Very disorganized and incoherent. Does not do a very good job of delivering the material. Inconsistent changing deadlines. Several classmates dropped. Avoid if you can.
THIS IS NOT AN EASY CLASS, even as an elective. A lot of students come thinking they can cruise through doing minimal work and simply fail. He will make you work, but you will learn so much its crazy! He really does care about students and has all his lectures are recorded which really helps. Definitely recommend, one of the best classes at FIU!
He's a great professor I took him for two classes now. I learned so much in this class. 6 assignments 2 exams his class isn't hard but there is work you have to do. He records his lectures so you will have a good reference. He can be a bit intimidating but he cares a lot about students and what we learn.
This professor is very unorganized. He is constantly mixing up due dates or having issues with our submissions. Taking him online is a waste if you have to, take him in person. Get ready to wait WEEKS before having an assignment graded. FIU has limited professors for this course but I would not recommend professor gomez.
If you want to learn, take this professor. If you want an easy class, take this professor. Professor Gomez has taught me things that I have not learned in all my years taking IT courses. He is realistic and very easy going. He is sarcastic as heck, but you will definitely learn. It's not a powerpoint lecture, you actually learn the material.
Took this class online horrible idea Instructions for assignment made no sense. Theres no tutors for this class either so youre on your own This is a class you take by itself for a semester. Avoid at all cost. The two professors teaching this class are difficult so rethink the elective track. Oh yeah this class is supposed to be an elective ya ok
Horrible avoid at all cost
Nope will not make the mistake of taking him again. Terrible couldnt graduate because of him. Repeating the semester just for one class.
Like the person below me, I also couldn't graduate because of this one class. The material is difficult already but his formatting is atrocious. Projects every 2 weeks with 5-7 hours of sloppy live-recorded lecture videos that could easily be condensed into 10-15 min vids if he took the time to properly make them. Avoid at all costs.
POSSIBLY THE WORST OF ALL TIME, Says not to visit him outside of class does not provide any help. instructions for assignments are very vague.
Professor Gomez is an awesome professor. His lectures are demos of the assignments and provides information on the key concepts you will need to know. He teaches based off of real life experience so there's no way you won't learn in this class. The assignments take about a full day or two to complete but they are totally doable. great class!!!!!
This class is not easy. You will need to work hard. 6 assignments, 12 quizzes (2 of the lowest dropped), and two exams. Videos lectures are a bit too long. I believe Professor Gomez is a really cool and caring person. He will teach you a lot of linux commands, scripting and system admin tasks. If you like, the challenge take him. NOT AN EASY A.
Prof Gomez is great and will push you, so in turn you will have to push yourself, which is rare in my university experience. This class is not easy and not for the weak, However, when the semester is done, you'll feel like what you learned will stay with you, this can and most likely be applied to your career. *6 assi's and 2 exams and 12 quizzes*
This class is very hard, the prerequisites to take this class are not accurate. Gomez is very tough grader with very tough assignments. If you have never taken any Unix classes be prepared to spend all your semester in this class only. Professor does not teach you he just tells you an idea of what you have to search on google to do the assignment
Like some people have said before me beware of Gomez, if you do not have deep knowledge about Unix then I wont take him if it is your last semester, hes not a caring professor he wont help you, and in his office hours he wont treat you nice, I personally visited him in his office hours and he did not make feel welcomed. Really hard class.
Worst professor Ive ever had. He doesnt care if you understand the material and could care less if you pass. He doesnt teach the material and tells you to google it.
Horrible.
I've asked the prof for help many times this semester. Each time i felt brushed off and dismissed. Every question I would ask was as if, the professor didnt read/understand or care about my ? and simply told me to google it, or rewatch hrs upon hrs of lectures. Lectures/Assignments are confusing and not very clear. Would not recommend!!!
Just because you understand a subject doesnt mean you should teach it. Not every one is fit to be a professor and professor Gomez is no exception. I will never take a course with this professor again so help me god.....
Professor gomez really cares and puts in a lot of time into his course so you learn! As long as you do the work and put it the time you will get a good grade. I am extremely grateful for having him as a professor and would definitely take him again.
Not recommended. Very tough grader with bad instructions.
Very tough grader and tells you to google everything. Youre on your own kid...
Doesnt respond to emails. Took me all semester to correct a mistake he made!
Do u want to build your understanding of the Unix system? Do u need to take an extra credit course? Do u want to do both at the same time? Are you proficient at teaching yourself? REALLY proficient? If yes, take this course, most of the learning will be on u tho, but the assignments are interesting. Gomez answered all of MY questions when I request
13 quizzes, 2 exams, 1 project, and 6 assignments. Assignments deal with setting up 3 Linux virtual machines. Almost every week something is due. You need to watch a lot of videos. Halfway through the course the assignments get harder. Usually, you're on your own if you get stuck on an assignment. You have to "figure it out" or start from scratch.
Worst instructor I've ever had. Careless and unorganized. He doesn't teach anything and tells you to google it.
Just awful
Worst instructor I've had. Uninterested, mind-numbing. Ultra-dated material covered. Hire fresh and energetic instructors who can teach us what we need to get a real job!
I don't know if this guy can be considered a professor. He doesn't know how to teach. Provides video lectures that are garbage and a waste of time. His instructions for the assignments are not clear. Don't take this guy. He takes week to grade. Avoid wasting your time taking this class. He does not deserves it.
I see now why he has so many bad reviews. He does not care at all for his students, he puts trick questions on his quizzes, he doesn't reply to students DM's even if their legitimate questions.. This is the worst teacher I have even taken since coming to FIU (I'm a senior)
Mr Gomez has so much potential, hes a nice professor but he expects you to learn everything by yourself. For Example: I never got taught bash before, he never gave out an example on how to script on bash. I was really stuck. I wish he gives more examples and more effort instead of his 1 hour lectures of him talking useless things 70% of the time.
I can tell hes not a database admin professor. I wish his lectures he gives more examples on scripting. He expects you to know 85% of everything or research it. Which I think is wrong, instead of him not giving out the answer of the assignment make another example with lessons on scripting for those who cant learn it.
His instructions isnt clear and his lectures are worse. He should give lectures on examples or in a PowerPoint to teach us. Many people have different skill level in this class. No wonder why he said theres a big drop rate.
Stay away, you can tell the profesor is very smart but his teaching style needs to change! I had to research 85% of the things and thats not how it should be. For someone learning Database for the first time beware!
Very tough grader with bad instructions. Tells you to google and research on your own. He seems like a nice person.
this was the toughest class so far I have taken. I feel like Professor Gomez needs to reconstruct his teaching methods by showing us more examples or about the topic. He does expect us to know almost everything and research on our own. I know its the real world, but we are still in school and here to learn from you not Google.
Says its okay to fail, but we have our GPA and grades to worry about Don't think he considers we have other classes Zero structure to his lectures Expects us to know more than we do, sadly FIU did not prepare us Lack of options made most of us take this class Treats this more like a certification than a class Aware of poor feedback, doesn't change
Terrible quizzes, he doesnt even teach you some of the questions on the quizzes.. terrible assignment, barely any instructions, worst FIU instructor I have taken.
Tough grader with zero guidance. Like others have mentioned, he expects you to fail or find the answers yourself. Prepare to be consistently stressed out all semester.
Tough grader and doesn't teach. Just skims through basic examples and expects you to teach yourself
Rambles on and on about nothing... and then expects you to Google scripting and bash on your own. I could have just watched youtube videos and been better off...
His grading criteria needs to change!!! The assignments are literally 40% of your grade with 6 assignments. If you screw up on 1-2 assignments you are done for. 30% is a reasonable number. Also his grading scripts are not efficient whatsoever. I had users reported to my database and some did not show up with his code. He should manually grade.
Lectures are long-winded. Interpreting his vague descriptions was torture. Could've done 1 or 2 videos max per assignment. Instead of "making you struggle", should ask us relevant questions to understand. Doubt he'd take feedback as he'd miss hearing himself talk too much. I'd rather rewatch Fantastic Four (2015) than take his class again. 1 star.
Professors lectures are extremely long and don't have a single plan to them. Seems like he gets on to talk about what is on his mind for that specific class rather than following a structured approach. Professor actively reviews his ratings but doesn't implement any changes to improve his structure and planning.
PLEASE make the assignments clearer, the instructions dont make sense!!!!!
Dude started reviewing a future assignment on his exam review video. No structure at all. Just a stream of consciousness about unix and databases.
This professor is a smart programmer but can't teach to save his life. He has no reference material besides his poorly constructed lectures, is very vague & unclear with his material/assgnmnts, and is constantly going off topic during lectures. He wasted in class time going over his RMP review during a lecture. You need to know Linux b4 taking him.
As the other reviews have mentioned... you're on your own. His lectures are pointless. The only reason I even watched the lectures at all was to know what the goal of the assignment was. He doesn't actually teach anything.
Professor Gomez is great. You need to read the lectures and watch his videos carefully. You will learn hands on experiences from him.
Good to learn from and ask questions. The class is very hands-on with projects. Valuable experience to just be exposed to the material covered in this class. A lot of these previous reviews are from people who don't belong/won't get a job in IT and ask the dumbest questions in the group chats. Very glad I took this class with him. Would recommend.
Great learning experience, though I have one gripe: He says to rely on google for everything, but we don't get to use google for the midterm/final :( This is the class I learnt the most from out of every class I've taken in FIU
Professor Gomez is great. He actually cares about his students and want then to succeed in life. His assignments are easy, just pay attention to his lectures and you should have enough information to complete it, or at least figure it out the missing parts with little research. You will learn a lot of linux, even in the DBA class, which is amazing.
His assignments leave a lot for you to figure out. He recommends Google as a resource for the assignments which I wish more profs would do. Because as a software developer by day and student by night this is as close to the field as it will get. Closed book exams though which makes the exams focus more on memorization then comprehension.
Class material is new and interesting compared to other CS classes. Assignments were hard if you dont have UNIX experience but doable with time. Worst part of the class is the tests revolving around memorizing commands ( write down every command you've ever used for tests ). Lectures are OK, maybe too long but they got shorter over time.
Alot of people give this professor a hard time but he does help with homework alot. Also if your not as efficient in program like i am dont worry, the class can be done by just using excel. The only problem i had with this class was instructions were unclear at times and videos were too long at times. and setting up databases were tricky at times.
People on here are a bit rough on Gomez, I took him for Unix and Database. His assignments are slightly difficult but he explains everything and leaves the video up. That being said the assignments take time, you will break things, get lost. If you can get through the rough beginning he's not bad, you'll learn a lot. Plus always available for help
I wouldn't recommend this professor, horrible teaching skills, makes you watch hour long videos that only contain about 10 minutes worth of resourceful materials. Asked for student feedback, and he ignored all. He goes live for Q&As at like 2am. You have to know UNIX and scripting or you spending hours/days on assignments. He is all over the place.
You get what you put in in regards to this class. You do NOT need to know how to script to get an A in the class although it helps. Most students wanted hand holding which Gomez doesn't do. Only class that I gained some skills since I had to actually research and not just quizlet/CH. Start work as soon as it is assigned, quiz/test aren't tricky.
I have mixed thoughts about Prof. Gomez. I understand that he tries to do his best but he has some improvements to take care of. First: His lectures, he needs to make more videos on examples and how to script. Many students didn't know how too. Second: His communication, he has a full time job so its understandable but make more effort.
The professor gives you 1hour long videos at 11pm where you wait for him to talk of other things instead of focusing on the assignment it self. He doesn't show you the whole thing on video you have to figure out the rest. At the end he said you may resubmit stuff and he tells you then that they were not completed.
A very real step in to what you would be required to do if you worked with Linux servers. Not a lot of database talk in terms of efficiency but more talk on how to setup a database. Most homeworks had unclear instructions at first glance but upon asking peers/professor, it becomes more clear. He wants his students to learn, then pass!
He does not teach anything. You're on your own. Lectures are pointless. What a waste of money and time with this guy in this class.
Really good learning experience! Midterm and assignments are really easy and youll learn a lot from it!
He makes the class hard since he is a hardcore believer in students teaching themselves he has hinted at this numerous times during the course, that being said you will be on your own and you wont be able to ask any questions because he does not have scheduled lectures times he isn't a bad professor he just cant teach online classes. Disconnected
Run far away!!! HE CANNOT HAVE PRIOR TEACHING EXPERIENCE. He literally says tech yourself on Youtube. He doesn't respond to students at all. Super unprofessional. His course structure is a mess and he is all over the place in his videos. Hands down the worst professor I have ever had.
Doesn't care, tries to get by without having to teach students anything or work.
He's a great professor but its a lot of work you need to put in. His assignments aren't hard if you know how to script you'll do fine in his class.
He's a great professor. He just gives a lot of work but its doable. I do recommend to learn how to script before taking his class and it will save you some trouble. Quizzes aren't that bad. Just watch his videos and pay attention and take notes and you'll be fine.
People can say what they want but I took this professor for CTS4408 and for CTS4348 Unix Admin class and I learned so much. It wasn't easy but it wasn't hard either. Scripting is recommended but you can do like me where I completed my assignments through Excel formulas. Watch the lectures for the assignments and the quizzes to pass the course.
Professor Gomez teaches this course in a hands on way. You will learn how to create VMs, databases, installation, and lots of troubleshooting. It is an extremely easy course and at some points you will have to learn on your own (GOOGLE). The assignments, quizzes, and tests were easy and of no surprise. Prof Gomez is easy to reach outside of class.
Professor Gomez was hard to contact, did not have regular office hours, told students to figure things out for themselves, and grades assignments with an automatic response of terminal inputs. Make sure you know how to program before taking class, because he won't teach you how. Would not recommend his class.
Gomez seems like a nice guy and that's why I didn't give him a 1 star. That being said this is the most ridiculous class i've ever taken. There's enough work for two classes in this class alone. All information comes through hour + long videos and he is all over the place. You will learn to navigate through Linux but his tests will fail you.
Creates his own assignments that go along with hour long lecture videos that might or might not explain how to complete the actual assignment. Exams are also very hard with the average grade on the exams in my class being a 65%. Also trying to ask questions or communicate with him can be very challenging since sometimes he never responded.
It is surprising he's a professor here at FIU.
Professor German Gomez is an awesome lecturer. His videos are entertaining and perfect to learn because they are practical. I especially like his humor and wit while walking students along steps. You cant slack a minute or you are done! You will truly learn by doing in this class. By the end of the semester VMs are second nature. 2 thumbs up.
gives you a 1000 user file with multiple records and its average 5 different websites with 5 different vms per assignment. I have done 5 assignments, and the semester ends in 2 weeks, he has graded 2 of them so far, leaves you on read when you contact him on teams (his preferred way of communicating). Also, he grades with scripts.
Professor Gomez seems like a nice and caring dude. However, his course is probably the most disorganized in the world. Assignments are never created on time and you get all grades at the end of the semester basically. Lectures aren't the best and it takes a while to get to the point. Not hard though just follow his instructions and you'll pass
Lectures are longwinded, chaotic, and full of errors. Assignments on canvas are also full of typos. Reuses old lectures with mistakes. Don't expect feedback. Don't expect to learn by understanding. You can teach anything by beating someone over the head and making them do it 1000 times...that's not commendable. Calls himself lazy and proves it.
Do not expect to follow a schedule. To be able to complete the assignments you have to wait until he has time to post a video explaining how to do it. The videos were always posted late and sometimes the day before the assignment deadline. He wont tell you what you did wrong just give you a 0 without any feedback. The class was time consuming.
As many others have said, completely disorganized, with no structure. Caused me a lot of stress for no reason.
Good concepts but lectures mostly aren't useful. Exams are easy if you know the concepts. Submit assignments thru website that deploys VMs graded via a script. Instructions are confusing, website/grading buggy, and prof not organized/reachable. Skilled enough to find the grading scripts? You'll be able to fix issues yourself and easily get an A+.
All he does is yap yap yap in his videos. He is lost, and replied late. No actual help, you will be left to solve any problems you have on your own if you get any problems that he does not cover in his nightly yapping youtube sessions.
Lectures are worthless, Don't know how to script? Don't bother with this class he won't show you the technique or how to do the work. This guy is the definition of figure it out and don't bother with asking me. Will release broken projects and assignments. He is super difficult to meet with, Office hours were 11PM or sometimes even 12AM.
I have never been so agitated by a professor to the point where I actually go out my way to make a review on him. German Gomez is unfit to be a professor and has caused so much unneccessary stress for the dumbest things. Broken assignments, horrible lectures with too much filler, lazy grader, and just ignores your emails and messages. 0/10!
If you wanna learn anything don't take this class and run as far as you can. There is no teaching what so ever and if you don't do the assignments exactly how he wants it fail. Between broken assignments and projects, I was at wits end. Not to mention the only time i was able to communicate with him was at midnight. This man is unfit to teach.
I just want to start off with i attended every single one of his zoom meetings and asked as many questions as possible and passed with a great grade. Take the initiative and you will pass, he literally lets you have a cheat sheet for exams and helps a lot on assignments BUT YOU HAVE TO ASK! Very hands on class, a good amount of work to do though.
His class revolves around the assignments, quizzes & exams. The lectures are long but all material needed to pass his class is there. Take notes, they are helpful to pass exams. There were sporadic zoom meetings, and he puts all his lectures on YouTube. We used his website to submit assignments. Overall he was helpful but not timely.
Overall, a nice professor with potential but his course was haphazardly underbaked, lacked structure, and needed clarity. His work ethic and course structure NEEDS improvement imho. Classwork and exams were challenging due to grammar issues and odd questions. Lectures were also hit-or-miss (use 2x speed!). What others have reviewed is mostly true.
Post assignments late, expects you to do quizzes with unreleased assignments and lectures. Super unreliable. JUST DON'T!
He's terrible simply dont take him, you'll be giving money to a professor that doesn't care and doesn't deserve it. take anyone else literally anyone else.
Gomez is totally incompetent, constantly releasing assignment requirements late, relying on broken software, and having zero communication with his students. And during this most recent hurricane, when FIU officially closed school, he had a quiz due on one of these off days when school is not supposed to be in session. These is no excuse for this.
This is the only time I have ever gone out of my way to review a professor And German Gomez is legitimately the worst professor I have ever had at FIU. This guy has the audacity to finish creating his assignments on the due date or day before so you better hope he added something new. I REPEAT WORST CS PROFESSOR AT FIU BY FAR AND HE DOES NOT CARE
Biggest issues are his lack of communication and the way he insists on doing things in his own way which just leads to constant issues. Completed an assignment to find out he extended the date but added more and I received half credit. Instructions are so vague it's impossible to know what he wants unless you go through his hours of yap lectures.
Worst professor I have ever taken. He does not respond to any of your questions and he will just tell you to "watch his lesson" while questioning your intelligence. You need to watch his 1hour+ lecture to be able to complete all assignments BUT he will NOT release the lecture up until 2 days before the assignment is due. DO NOT take him.
Not a bad professor, just very unorganized and lacking when it comes to explanations or feedback
I didn't mind at first that each assignment was split into 5 parts each with at least an hour long video that at least took you two hours each to do. I didn't even mind how unorganized this teacher was at first but he doesn't respond, you try to reach out and get no help what's so ever. Better than Robinson but they're both just straight terrible.
Unorganized, potentially uninterested (ghosts your messages, sounds fed up all the time in his lectures, etc), and just generally the worst professor I have ever had. Quiz due today? Oh, unpublished module. Assignment due in 12 hours? Can't be submitted. Assignment was due a week ago? It reopened with added tasks. 1st review I've left.. don't take.
The professor's videos can be chaotic and unclear, but using resources like unstuck AI alongside the lectures really helped me prepare. Assignments are challenging, but you'll gain valuable skills.
His hour long videos is a waste of time. All he does is yap yap yap, fix errors that he did, and instructs his assignment for about 5 mins and yap yap yap. horrible professor, very disorganized with his quizzes and assignments. he replies very late to our emails and tends to extends his assignments and quizzes due to his mistakes. do not take him.
One of the worst professors I've had. Lectures & assignments are full of mistakes, grades are severely delayed, & he doesn't respond to messages. When I raised concerns, I was blamed and told to rewatch lectures and start over—even after saying I already had. He assumes if one student can submit, then we all can and no error is possible.
Professor is a mess. Unnecessarily bloated lectures with nothing-burger tangents, difficult exams with no proper way to prepare for them, includes a bunch of trivia-like questions. Assigned a major assignment due on Spring break, didn't respond to any messages assumingely because HE was on vacation. horrible with communication and ignores messages
Extremely disorganized, never answers messages, refuses to take accountability for his mistakes, unwilling to help his students, many students lost credit on assignment 1 due to his mistake he refuses to fix, exams are trivial with questions having nothing to do with lecture/material, also allegedly stalks women near CASE, just dont
Avoid Do not take if can
Bloated lectures that are extremely unorganized, makes assignments difficult for the sake of making them difficult, zoom lectures are always very late at night so he's already inaccessible, never answers messages, exams contained trivial questions, quizzes are from the lectures, assignments too, easy class but the prof made it hard.
Had him for CTS 4348 in Fall '24 too. By far THE WORST professor I've ever had. Posts extremely long lectures that are not helpful, assignment instructions are a mess, misses deadlines for assignments, and exams have nothing to do with homework. Disappeared for all of February and missed 2 quizzes, a homework, and the midterm. AVOID AT ALL COST
Please do not take this course the negative reviews do not lie and are extremely accurate. Hard work does NOT pay off in this course as the "professor" is incompetent and sporadic. I now have to repeat this course despite doing what I was supposed to and putting in at least 7 hrs per day into assignments.
Doesn't care about students or anything, or anything they are doing even if you ask him for help, he doesn't care and will try to ignore you to the fullest
Follow the lectures and you'll be fine, he's very hard to get a hold of and grades very late. very disorganized but knows the material very well. the class is very easy the assignments are just tedious and he rambles a lot in his lectures.
*Not a fake rating* Professor Gomez may seem a bit messy, but his labs taught me real skills. Thanks to his Unix firewall lab, I fixed a UDP traffic issue (SRT link) in a CentOS machine at work that others missed. Even as a network administrator with not a huge UNIX experience, I solved it because of his class.
Avoid if you can
