First I hated the class. I hated him... But he is a nice guy.. sometimes animated, super dorky.. has a funny laugh! kinda snorts.. best way to get an A, attend class, seem interested, interact with him, offers some xtra points.. tests are mildly hard.. the second test is the easiest(memorization).. Overall great guy!. Interact with him!
horrible horrible horrible. Did not like this class one but. He was extremely boring and at times very confusing. He was however very knowledgeble in the subject of Astronomy and an all around very nice guy! He will like you if you interact and speak up in class. Extra credit is available and tests are moderate to hard
I took him for astronomy lab and the regular class. I believe he is a great teacher, one of my favorites. He gives a lot of examples and if you need help, he will always have time for you. Great sense of humor :D
This class is awesome. He is extremely helpful. I have not completed this class yet, however if you like looking at the stars and things in that nature. Take this class and it is well worth it. However you must pay close attention to detail. Also, don't drop anything it's expensive.
Smart. Funny. Old school. Understandable. Demonstrative. Straight to the point. A good teacher. An assest to the school.
Great teacher, makes learning very easy and fun. He does great demonstrations, answers questions, offers extra credit. You must attend class or you will not understand anything. Tests are moderately hard, but as long as you take good notes and study you will ace his class. Funny laugh, funny guy, extremely knowledgable.
Dr. Scappaticci great professor! Show up and take notes and you can pass the class. I used the old edition of the book with no problem only difference is pluto is no longer a planet and has more moons. Grade based on 4 test and iclicker is used for a possible 40 points of extra credit. Worth taking!
Great professor. Fun class, but lab notebook requires lots of work. No textbook. You will know the night sky and how to use a telescope when you finish this class.
I really enjoyed this class, going out to the mountains, setting up the telescope and learning the star. Just don't miss his class since he drops after two, drops a letter grade after one.
Scappaticci is maybe one of my favorite professors at city. Although ive only had him for this one course. Hes funny, light hearted and definately passionate about what he teaches.Grade was based off 3 tests THATS IT, so dont botch those tests. Read the book, take notes, ask questions and participate youll have fun and learn TONS.Wish i took the lab.
This is my second class with Gerald, He's an awesome teacher. Not even hard at all. I took his 101 class and now just recently his 109 class. Just make sure you attend all the classes and do the note books. Other than that, the two tests at the end of the semester are a breeze, memorize some constellations, and learn the telescope that you use.
I cant say enough good things about this prof. He is energetic, enthusiastic, really funny, and really nice. I wish he taught other courses at City. He makes it easy to understand complex ideas and teaches very well, repeating things several times in order to retain the information. Take him if u can.
uh okay okay, okay is what he says over and over, and did he tell u about the snow in chi town how he had to take the bus to get to college, he says how can u be late in sd no snow okay okay
Course content is complex. Scappaticci is very entertaining and enthusiastic--makes complexity fun. Hard read text. No HW, but lots of studying. 4 tough exams. He's lenient w/good excuses! Super humorous/geeky. Will attempt to answer astro questions not discussed in book, like constellations during Jesus' birth. Available during office hrs. Take!
i was so scared going into physics, but this prof really dumbs down difficult concepts. dont get me wrong, tests are difficult (20 Q's, 8 multiple choice options). but you learn the material. he's fair and lazy people bother him. homework and class participation are extra credit. you wont regret it.. TAKE HIM!!! :)
Excellent teacher. Very passionate about physics and lectures were very clear and organized. Highly recommended.
Astronomy 101 with Professor Scappaticci, was amazing I learned so much from his lectures!! Exams are based on class notes. Study for exams it's a must!!Extra Credit helps tons purchase the I-clicker.He also teaches Astro lab 109 Observing the night sky, which is very educational.
Teaches Mechanics very clear & precise. Sets the highest test score as 100%. Explains things in different ways so more students can understand. Takes the time to solve problems all the way through & even explains the problem down to the simple algebra & trig. 4 test, no cumulative final, 10 labs, hw extra credit. All around great teacher & person!
I love love love his dorkiness and along with his teachings. I couldn't help but feel big urges to hug him, especially when his combed hair stuck up a bit at the end of the class from messing with it through out the lecture :) His demonstrations are great! Absolutely great ?
Wow professor scappaticci is one of the best professors on campus..he doesnt try to be funny its just his dorkiness and how energetic he is makes it fun..I never thought astronomy would be this interesting..plus ive havent seen him in a bad mood or anything like that..take him hes great
Dr. Scap is HILARIOUS! His dorkiness makes the class funny! His class is challenging but all you need to do is study from his notes. Try not to miss cause he goes over a lot. Hes a charger fan which is a +. Try hard and youll succedd!
Professor Scappaticci is one of the best and most passionate professors I've ever had. He makes astronomy easy and interesting! I really enjoyed listening his lectures. He NEVER made me bored. Btw, I had perfect attendance. If you go to class, take notes from his ppt, review them, and do quizzes for ec, you will get an A. I DEFINITELY recommend him
He uses great visual examples that let you understand what the concepts are. He really knows how to make the class interesting and has many funny moments/stories.
Multiple choice only exams in a physics course are a bad idea hands down. He does know how to teach well and a in a clean manner. Doesn't do any hard problems during lecture and expects you to know how to do them on the exam.
Professor Scappaticci is an amazing instructor. I took his short-term Astronomy 109 lab and it was overall the best class I've had thus far. His extremely thorough lectures and willingness to help made the seven mandatory hours pass with ease, however it was his passion that really made you appreciate the whole experience. I highly recommend him!!
Spends half of the lecture time talking about himself and his family, stories start off with a point but end up being irrelevant. Test are long and difficult, so definitely do the study guide. Also during the lecture he Plays loud music which at times its difficult to hear him. He also gives opportunity to get extra credit points.
This class is no walk in the park. Best way to pass is to show up for lectures. Don't miss any days. His lectures can be long but he tries connecting to us with stories and humor. Hes a bit of a dork but it can be endearing. The Iclicker is a must buy and use. It'll save your butt. Probably won't need the book. Good luck. P.S. Show an interest.
Take notes on the powerpoint, show up to class he won't post notes online, test can be somewhat hard if you don't study. iClicker is a must the book not so much. He's very passionate about astronomy and tends to go a little fast but he has no problems when you ask questions.
I love this class. The worst thing about this class is you can't take it twice.
He's an okay teacher, however he spends most of the time talking about his family and trying to be funny. His tests are extremely difficult and don't cover the topics he provides in study guides. There isn't much room to improve your grade besides exams, so clickers are a MUST!
Professor Scappaticci is such an amazing professor. His lectures are intruging and at some points funny which makes class pass by fast. He also gives extra credit which comes in handy.
astr101 is definitely an interesting and fun class. tests are easy if you utilize homework and study outlines. grade is only based off 4 tests but gives out up to 100 points extra credit with clickers. guaranteed an A as long as you pay attention. he is super understanding i slept through the final and he still let me take it during office hours.
Lecture is a lot of fun, hes passionate and makes corny jokes. Get clicker for extra credit as a buffer for the 4 exams. He gives you a comprehensive study guide, write a few lines about each bullet point and create your own study guide you will get an A on exams. If you have a hard time memorizing numbers and facts and don't study you may fail.
He is such a funny professor! He is really nerdy and knows what he is talking about, made me more interested in astronomy. Homework is extra credit. Fun to see the planetarium in use. Your grade is based on four tests, they are easy if you take good notes on his lectures and write down the hw Q&A!! You WILL need an iClicker.
The lectures are interesting because of his use of old and new teaching resources. He is vary passionate about the subject thus his lectures have an energy.
Scappaticci is a really nice professor that has awesome lectures however physics 195 is a really tough course. As he always said taking this class the first time is really tough most people have to take this class twice
He is what you expect from college professors. Definitely set a high bar. Great and hilarious and humble. You ca. Tell he loves teaching. Passionate.
Makes astronomy real easy and fun. You get extra credit for answering questions in class with a clicker. 4 exams- the final is included. The final is the last test and it is not cumulative. Just do the exam review and you'll pass.
Professor Scappaticci was one of the best professors I have had at city! His lectures are really cool and he will answer any question if you don't understand it at first. Get the iclicker it is super important and can help if you don't do that well on the tests. Overall really great guy wish I could take it again!
His class consisted of only 4 exams and a clicker. His exams were very difficult but his class was overall amazing and you learn a lot. Even if you dont get good grades on the exams you can get up to 100 extra points extra credit with the clicker make sure to do your homework and you will be able to pass this class
Really good astronomy professor. Very clear, very understanding, has a great sense of humor, and is very straightforward with his class requirements. If you need an astronomy class, you should absolutely consider Professor Scappaticci.
very tough grader. would look for another class if i could do it over
He does not want to spend time teaching! instead he spends time finding how to add more traps to confuse his student. He made hate the subject. He likes tricky questions. in one quiz you'll find a lot of traps. in each line he planet traps.
First of all, laziest professor I've had in the more "advanced" classes. His tests are multiple choice with no chance for partial credit, so make sure you're including as many significant digits as possible! Similar to high school, he will stop lecture and waste time to scold and humiliate someone looking at their phone. Attendance is mandatory.
No chance for partial credit... unless you got the problem right... then he just deducts points if something in the procedure is wrong. He is brutal with tests.
Honestly, I think this is the best professor I have had in college. He loves his job and loves his students. Very helpful. Explains material very well and makes it so easy to understand.
Quizzes can be HW problems but are great practice for the exam. They give you the opportunity to correct and learn from mistakes. Very easy to get a high grade. Gives you the chance to raise your grade through extra credit.
Fantastic teacher! Cares a lot for his students and you can tell he really loves his job. He is very dedicated to teaching the students the material, and if you want to learn he will make sure you do. His tests are a little bit tricky, but he absolutely offers more than enough extra credit to make up for it. I highly recommend taking his class
4 exams, 12 labs, and 12 Webassign homework. Exams worth 67% of the grade. Does not offer EC as the previous reviews said. Exams are difficult and the average on exams is around 75. He is a tough grader on exams and labs, but he rounds our grade up at the end of the semester. So much appreciated!
Very sad about this class. This is the worst class I've been taken so far. Please DO NOT take him. Lectures are Youtube Videos, 4 exams, 12 labs, 12 Webassign Homeworks. Exams are 2 hours long with a lot of questions , NO EXTRA CREDITS.
Does not care to teach, only to leave insipid youtube video lessons that don't help. Tough grader, and not at all sympathetic to a student's struggles.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. This class gives me a lot of anxiety this semester. His tests are extremely hard and he is a very tough grader. Physics is hard and taking it online is a lot harder. I hope he would understand the current situation students are in right now.
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD! He's a very tough grader, does not care about his students at all. The previous good review are misleading! He DOES NOT offer any extra credit and makes the class so much harder than it needs to be. Avoid him at all cost!!
Very good Prof! He cares about getting his students to understand the material a lot, and really knows what he is talking about when it comes to Physics. His personally made youtube lectures were very helpful throughout the class, as he made over 40 different Youtube videos for the class to watch. If you try, you will actually learn the material.
Great professor! He cares for his students a lot and spends hours on youtube lectures for students. You need to work hard in this class as your grade isn't handed to you. If you do all the assignments and watch his lectures you will get a good grade. He taught the material great and I would take his class again.
Never have I hated a class SO MUCH. The prof is such a tough grader on exams and labs. I was able to earn an A in ochem but struggled terribly in this class. RIP to my 4.0 GPA b/c of this class
Professor Scappaticci is one of the hardest graders I've had at City. Often times on his tests, I'd almost feel like he'd ask one or two of the most obscure questions no one could find on quizlet just for fun. That being said, he really cares about teaching the material. His lectures were great, and you can tell he's a genuine guy. I learned alot
Dr. Scappaticci is a very caring professor, and he always wants the best for his students. Because of COVID19, it was harder for me to keep up with the class this semester, but he really helped me get through.
Tests are worth a big part of your grade so watch out for them. Unlike other teachers who just pass students along during the online format, Dr. Scappaticci actually teaches. I really appreciated his lectures, and his willingness to explain the material through video lectures. He seems like a great guy with a big heart. I definitely recommend him
I really enjoyed learning about Astronomy in Professor Scappaticci's class. His homework was pretty straightforward but helped you on the tests. His tests were a little tricky, but he rounds grades at the end of the semester if you're even somewhat close which was really cool. If you want to take Astronomy asynchronous I highly recommend taking him
Dr. Scappaticci is truly a great prof. He's caring, considerate, and made great lectures for his class. I had to study a ton for his class, 195 was my hardest course. He was really nice about rounding my grade at the end of the semester which I wasn't expecting. He's a bit dorky but you can tell he knows what he's talking about in Physics! Take him
Awesome teacher. Free textbook. Understands that most students are there for their gen ed courses. Entertaining, kind, took the time to email me my grade almost immediately once class ended. Straight forward, assignments always posted on schedule with an announcement so you didn't miss it. Nothing negative to say.
His lectures are good and he is reasonable if you forget an assignment. He knows what he's talking about and I can tell he really cares about Physics. Study and you will get the grade you want. Hes one of the best Profs Ive had at city college
He's a good professor. His lectures are really helpful, I have to admit I was lazy about watching them as I slacked most of the semester. I had a 60 in his class which I thought was going to put my transfer to a 4 year in jeopardy but he was nice enough to email me that he was gonna pass me. He's old school so put his lectures on 2x speed.
He grades somewhat tough but is a really good guy. I recommend watch the lectures because most of his answers aren't on Quizlet. I really wish I could have taken him in person so I could have learned a little bit more in the planetarium. His tests typically have 1 or 2 trick questions but overall they're pretty fair.
He is a really smart guy but tough grader. I recommend watching all of his video lectures because that is the only way you will be able to pass. He splits his tests up into 8 parts so you can take each section throughout the day which is nice. Only take this class if you really love Physics because it is very, very, hard.
Class is pretty hard you have to work for it. I missed an Exam and he still let me take it over a month later with a minimal penalty. If you do all the assignments you'll do pretty well. He was super chill at the end of the semester and rounded me from an 84. I highly recommend him
Hes overall very clear about his guidelines. Roughly 4 tests, and homework every week. His lectures are really good and help out a lot for the Exams. If you keep up with the lectures and HW then this class is pretty easy. I would definitely recommend it to someone looking for a physical science
Class was not too hard. He was incredibly easy going and I could tell he went above and beyond in his video lectures. If you try you will easily get an A. He is a dorky yet very funny guy. I highly recommend him if you need a science class
His class is very straightforward. There were a few tests that I did a little bit of studying for but nothing too crazy. I really enjoyed his lectures, they were incredibly detailed and I actually learned quite a bit about the universe. I definitely recommend.
He's a very very hard professor, but he definitely cares about you learning. 4 exams throughout the semester, each harder than the last. If you are looking for an easy A, do not take him. If you are actually trying to learn the material as I was, he is by far your best bet
I took this class last semester. Superrr hard. With that being said, Scapp is a really good professor who wants you to learn. I met with him at his office hours and he was more than willing to go over subject material with me. Watch all the lectures, do all the problems and study, study, and study. You can get an A but you have to bust your tail.
Took this class last yr. His class is honestly really hard but if you want to learn he's probably the best professor. He was really nice during office hours when I needed clarification on problems. I spent hours studying and I was able to get an A by the skin of my teeth. If you are willing to work your ass off then he's a good prof
Dr. Scappaticci has been the most understanding and genuine professor ive by far. I took his astro 101 course this fall and he was clear from the very beginning about what we would be studying each week. He even gave us access to a free textbook! Only 1 quiz a week and 1 exam at the end of each month. Just read your chapters and youll pass!! <3
Not the worst, but don't take him if this is your first foray into physics. His lectures are very sparse and teach almost nothing. He can be difficult to reach outside of class. If you read the textbook, you might do okay.
Honestly a really chill professor. I was an idiot and forgot to take one of the exams so my final grade in the class was a 59% but he still rounded me up to a C without me asking. Really really cool of him. The class was interesting, I really liked learning about the planets and our place in the universe. Its an easy B if you are on top of it
Interesting content, clear syllabus, and grading criteria. Weekly multiple choice quizzes and a few exams. His quiz review videos helped with the exams. Very straightforward. No essays. The required textbook was free. I enjoyed learning about the universe.
If you pay attention to his lectures and read even a little bit of the textbook chapter, you will do fine on the quizzes and tests. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the universe and inserts many hilarious personal anecdotes to break up the monotony of the subject matter sometimes. Homework assignments are straight forward. He is amazing
Professor Scappaticci is knowledgeable, passionate, and has a clear syllabus. He allows a full page of notes for exams, and if you pay attention in class, you'll do well. His humor makes class enjoyable, and he's genuinely nice. I wish I could take more of his classes!
I had Professor Scappaticci for Astronomy 101 approximately 22 years ago and I still talk about him and the things he taught in that class. He had a very animated style of teaching and the demonstrations he did or had you help with made it more enjoyable and easier to learn about material that otherwise would be quite difficult.
he talks about his personal life and his life back in the day a lot of times during lecture. he is easy and the planetarium is fun, but sometimes goes off of tangents about stuff not related to astronomy. would not take him again.
He's very unclear about what he's looking for in the lab report. I got 19/20 so I did the same thing for the next lab but he gave me 13/20 for things that he didn't mark off in the lab before. He won't change your grade no matter what. I think he also has a bias when grading. Graded by 18 labs that's out of 20 and got 13/20 for most labs.
Fairly chill class, and he is a goofy and engaging teacher. It's incredibly hard to fail in this class since he lets you have a cheat sheet and a large part of your grade is boosted by attendance alone.
Professor Scappaticci is very kind and knowledgeable. We only had to do 11 labs in which only 10 counted towards our grade. He gives you a whole week to complete the lab but you do have to print it out and turn it in on paper the next class period. I honestly wish I had him for lecture as well.
I loved class with Professor Scappaticci! He is an incredible lecturer, and I really looked forward to going to class twice a week. if you take this class definitely plan to take good notes and review them before the tests-- I'm a good test taker normally and my A in the class was a close thing (ended the semester with 89.5 and got rounded up).
Dr. Scappaticci was a great prof. amazing lectures, super interesting with a great older guy sense of humor that just made it fun to learn from. He makes it super obvious what he's gonna look for in quizes so its easy to take the right notes without struggling. He cares about his students learning the material he actually cares about.
