I hate this teacher!!!! never take her. She will fail you for no reason at all and just because you dont agree with her crazy ideas. BAH!!

her green sheet says one thing and she does another. she is very hard to fallow as to what is due and when and since she contradicts herself you have to get on her good side to get a passing grade. you have to travel, and voluteer time to pass.
She is very unclear as to what exactly she wants the class to do, she is constantly changing the assignment so if you dont look up the site on the internet daily you may not do the right assignment.There is no late work accepted.
This is one of the easiest classes I've ever taken. Granted, you do have to do some reading and drive to a couple museums to pass the class, but c'mon...I'd rather do that than spend hours doing pointless homework. If you're not lazy, you'll do just fine.
She has different standards for different students, she has an anger problem and she does not go out of her way to help out anyone but herself. She likes changing the website at the last minute and not tell anyone about it until the day the assignment is
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. This pathetic excuse for a woman uses ICS-45 to vent her frustration for being fat and stupid. She cannot convey any clear explanations of what is required, then she will blame you for not understanding.

she is very upfront and as long as you do the assignments you'll pass with flying colors. I would take her again.
The class is easy as long as you can deal with her attitude. Lots of extra credit but once class starts the doors are locked so you can't arrive late. Very unclear teaching style, but not much of a workload at all.
Had class with her twise. Failed me the first time because somebody yelled at "Queer" Note: I had the class with her gay son, and note once more,: everyday her son looked disoriented and came to class late. One time her son and I were late to class, plain and simple, her son was allowed..I was late!
On one assignment issued, each and every one of 'supposely' did the assignment wrong when we were all following her exact instruction. She let only 3 people redo the assignment because in her words "we don't listen, understand ANYTHING, know ANYTHING, nor do we know proper or any kind of english.
She only WISHES she were Indian! Like the other poster said, she *IS* a disservice to them! Real indians don't act that way. That's why most pow-wows here suck 'cause it is people like HER who push their way in to run the show.
Warning to any student currently enrolled or any person who will enroll into an ICS class at De Anza College, Mrs. Parker is an unethical, irrational, and prejudice person. She is consistantly off-task during class. All of Gerri Parkers Fall ICS classes received their work on the final day of class.
Parker teaching comes completly from her OPINION there mine as well not even be a book. The worst teacher I have taken at De Anza. Never follows her schedule. I spent all of class watching the clock.
Class was very interesting. A little bit much on teh reading but all in all was a good class. She is tough but fair. As long as you follow directions, you'll do well in her classes.

She is the worst teacher i have ever come across in my life. She is so unhelpful and i am now regretting having taken her class.She just does not bother in the beginning and in the end she puts unimaginable pressure on her students.Dont take her or else you will have a tough time.
What can I say? The previous review is precisely what I want to say. She is perhaps the worst teacher at De Anza. I have no idea why they hired her to teach this class. It could have been much more interesting.
This techer gets off on screwing her students over. She takes pleasure in being the worst teacher at De Anza and I can not believe that she has not been fired yet. When I get more time I will do everything in my power to get her fired. I think that the dean should set up hidden cameras and catch her in action.
I had this teacher and she gets off on accusing people of stuff they did not do. I filed a grevance against this teachers wrong doing to me and won. However never got an apology from her like I wanted. I would never take this teacher again and believe me no one should so she can get fired. She does take a lot of personal days--family is important to her. She doesnt ask for much, just do the work and stay on her good side--once you screw up she wont forget it. If you work with her she'll be willing to work with you. She's very very blunt and honest if you cant deal with that dont take her.
This teacher shoud not be teaching see is a disgrace to all teacher and makes taking a class with her a nightmare. Stay away or you will be sorry you ever met her.
Gerri Parker is extremely vague and unclear in her expectations for assignments. Her implication that you will earn most if not all of the points for assignments if you attempt to do them is a facade. She does not seem genuinely committed to helping her students succeed. I would strongly urge students not to take Mrs. Parker's class.
Her personality sucks. I mean it's really horrible. But if you can handle that, it's an easy A as long as you do your work.
Do NOT look to her to provide structure. Class was like story hour with Grandma Gerri. Do EVERY assignment, because she does not follow her green sheet at all. I did extra credit & attended the class field trip, but I missed some seeminly "minor" assignments. Don't make my mistake & count on a midterm or final to make up those points, because she blew them BOTH off. If you are self-motivated & can handle flaky deadlines, be my guest, but this class did not work for me at all.
Her personality sucks and her lectures can get boring but as long as you study the lectures and do everything on time you should get an A. I did. Also make sure you do everything on time for the projects as those can be time consuming.
She will expect you to do your assignments to the best of your ability and attend class. The assignments are pretty simple, if you don't do them your grade will suffer.
Do not take this teacher. She is the worst teacher on earth. If you do take her, so sorry you are the dumbest student on earth as you have been warned.

I was very excited to take this class, but I ended up being very disappointed. She is very bitter towards students which prevents her from teaching. She goes into the class assuming that everyone there is going to screw around or be disrespectful of Native American culture, so she doesn't even try to educate anyone on it.
Teacher is the worst teacher I have ever taken. She is very biased and thinks that everyone is against Indians. I did all the assignments and went to the pow wow in sacramento for extra credit and she still gave me a C. She doesn't know how to teach, her lectures are boring, and she sidetracks a lot.
dear lord this woman is delutional. she seems to think the world is against native amerians. incredibly biased in all her teachings and has her favorites. easy class though, i didn't read the book or listen in class and i managed a B.
I can't believe it, she is totally opposite of whatever negetive things that were written on previous comments. She is easy, great, helpful and very calm teacher. I learned so much from this class. The easiest final exam, we had a potluck and we need to bring a native dish. It was YUMMY!
This teacher sucked. The person below that made a comment must of been herself or a family member. Do not take this teacher or you will be very very sorry.
Worst teacher period. She completly blew off the mid-term and the final were the same questions asked twice in different ways. If you got it right the first time, you got it right twice. Missed 3 weeks of class without informing the students, had a sub for one day and we learned more in that one day than in Parker's whole quarter.
Definitely a tough teacher to 'get'. Assignments are simple (when understandable), and her grading is insanely generous. (submit=full cred) Final became take-home at the last minute, and a large project was canceled to be extra credit. If you can ignore her quirks, regular completion of assignments(even the mundane ones) will get you an easy 'A'
This teacher is very bad at keeping your attention. She cancels class a lot. She is also aasumes that your against Native Americans as soon as you walk in the door. She will also tell you "the true" story about Thanksgiving after the holiday. IT WAS THE PAST, A LOT OF THINGS HAVE CHANGED. STOP BLAMING TODAYS YOUTH FOR WHAT OUR PAST GENERATIONS DID
Gerri is good at enlightening students on Native American affairs, prior to taking this class I didn't really understand what Indians struggle against. The lies your other history teachers have told you get completely blown away once you take one of Gerri's classes.
This is a great professor! I enjoyed her class and the sense of community that she builds with her students that I almost chose this as my major. Her teaching style is creative and the reading were excellent. I loved the field trip out to the canyon! Great stuff!!!!
MS. gerri is one of the best ICS teachers in De Anza college. She is friendly, funny, and the way she teaches her students makes them understand the Natvie history better by showing us alot of helpful moives.
Very interesting class. I wanted to know more about my Native American roots and learned an extreme amount. I highly recommend this class. She is a fair teacher and expects you to complete your assignments like any other instructor. Great class!!
Ms. Parker is a great professor! She is very helpful and she teaches her class with humor and a large dose of truth. She clearly cares about her students and the subject matter she is teaching. Thanks to her I have learned a great deal about Native American culture. Her class has exceeded my expectations and she has inspired me to learn even more.
She opened my eyes to Native American culture and the issues they face in modern society. She made the subject matter come to life for me. I found her to be friendly and professional.
The best ICS instructor on De Anza campus. She's great! She's honest and tells us the truth about history. She really led me to understand the Native American struggles and opened my eyes to the truth we need to know. I loved her discussions and the debates that we would get in regarding human issues. More professors s/b like Mrs. Parker!
I loved this class! Gerri Parker teaches an interesting class with great enthusiasum. Very informative and she gave me plenty of extra time after class whenever I had questions or needed clarification.
Best class ever with a fun professor. Very nice. Would love to take a class from her again.

I found Gerri to be passionate about her work, her history and her students. She is willing to help students succeed but wants to see some effort. I did not know anything about Am. Indian History before her class and went on to take two because I enjoyed her style.
Gerri was very helpful and very understanding of students. She has a great wealth of first hand knowledge and is one of the few professors on campus who you can disagree with and not be penalized for a differing opinion. An easy A this is not, (I got a C) but I slacked off at first but she allowed me to make up some work.
This teacher is the worst. I think the people writing the last year or so is herself you family. If you go back a few pages it is more like that this teacher is a joke and should not be teaching so mean and rude as all can be. If you should get an A and she does not like you you will get a C or D so true. Do not take her or you will be sorry.
I am not her family, I have taken a couple of her classes now and it is an easy A. All you have to do is turn in your work and do extra credit. She is very opinionated so those who do bad are those who question her about the most insignificant details of her course. Read the syllabus and you will do just fine.

to say gerri doesnt look like an american indian proves you didnt pay attention in her class.. you need to understand how she works in order to succeed. She may seem rude bc "native americans have it hard" well we really do you just dont see what we go through because most of us are still on the reservations. take the class and grade it yourself...
shes interesting, but it was more like a kickback high school class. if you dont do the assignments which are about 40 points each, then you have alot of extra credit options. it was a cool class, but i probably wouldn't take it again.

Easy A as long as you do most of the work she assigns. Lots of easy extra credit to fill the gaps. She went quite out of her way to help the class get good grades. A good portion of the lecture can be summed up as 'white people were, and are infringing against us'. Relevant of course, since that sentiment leads directly into the religious practices
Teacher was a joke. Was a no show for nearly half of the entire quarter and is a nutjob with high partiallity towards students. Grades without logic, and is nonsensical when she actually does show up for her job. in short this woman is a delusional complainer who deserves no job in her field.

Pretty easy because there's unlimited extra credit. You get to make art! She rambles about Native American stuff alot of the time, which is sort of interesting to listen to, but not much is on the tests. Quizzes are on the textbook readings. Attendance is not needed
She's horrible. She's rude and deserves the lawsuits she got. She's unorganised, insulting, and power-hungry. This is the worst class in the world. DO NOT TAKE.
She has anger management problems. She's narcassistic and totally bipolar, and she needs anti psychotics. She thinks her problems are the only things that matter and she just wants power. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Any other ICS class, seriously. Save yourself from this mental old toad.
Usually misses out on school at least once a week, and when she's there, she's usually ranting about personal problems or showing a video. She taught us almost nothing on the subject and forced us to take tests based off our own readings. No consistency! Aside from the massive amounts of EC possible, there's no reason to take this class. Horrible
It was a very interesting class to take. She was funny and told alot a stories about her family and other facts concerning Native Americans. Read the books! They have alot to say about culture and how it is so shallowly viwed today.
she's grumpy a lot and picks favorites. talks about personal problems to class which is kind of annoying. she doesn't really like questions because she answers them as if you're stupid. her personality can be difficult, but it's a good class if you want to get an A, there's all kinds of extra credit. she tells you attendance doesn't matter to her.
Overall, a very bad teacher. She takes about her personal problems and the text is almost irrelevant. I don't know much more about Native Americans than I did before this class. She can nice and fun to talk to, but she is not a good teacher.
Class is like 'busy work' from the 3rd grade. Decided to have her own spring break in the middle of the quarter, she missed 40% of classes. Extremely hippo-critical, sets deadlines, changes them when she feels like it. One statement from her still makes me blink..."African Americans, I'm not sure if we call em Blacks with a big B or a little b."
I'm still waiting for her to teach us anything. She has lectured a total of ten minutes. All work is from the book. Don't ever prove her wrong, and if you turn in a paper, don't be surprised if she puts it in the wrong pile and marks it totally off. Expect to do tons of EC to make up for her mistakes... and I'm an A student.

even though you put a smile in front of her she still gets mad at anything and everything. shes all about favoritism. She never teaches, lectures are mostly on movies. Its ironic how she gets mad when people leave when its put on and wonders why people lose interests in her class. HORRIBLE.
This is a very easy class, however, she grades hard on your art projects if they are not of perfection. You get a lot of extra credit work to do, so it is an easy A. Also, you only watch pointless movies so just pay attention to your textbook and you will do fine.

Class was boring. She talks about her personal life too much. I lost interest after the first two weeks. She broke her wrist around the 2nd week and just left class and we did not have a teacher no more. We had to wait for a substitute teacher to come. Whenever she feels interrupted or if you're not giving the attention, she yells at you.
WOW is all I can say. She is not a really good teacher. She claims to be easy, but really strict and docks points like crazy. We had to make a basket out of pine needles and a clay pot. She doesnt get how hard that is for someone who has never done it. Take caution before taking.
I am an Ethnic Studies major and I'm glad to say that I am in her class. I understood each of her directives very clearly. She is knowledgeable about the course content and I can tell that the subject, Race and Ethnicity Theories, is dear to her. She is a dedicated and helpful instructor. I have learned so much from her. This class was easy as long as you do the work that is posted you will do fine the extra if you miss she gives u so much extra credit its so good and people on here write bad things but they are not true she is very understanding if you have to leave if you talk to her about it and let her know and she makes it easy for you to pass JUST DO THE WORK

This is an awesome proffesor, she is indigenous herself and teachers natives and non-natives about racism, different cultures in a safe, fun and easy atmosphere.
TAKE THIS CLASS! It's a pretty easy class and you are for sure guaranteed atleast a B as long as you show up to class. The best part about the class are the art projects that you get to keep. It's a pretty fun class, so i highly recommend it.
Gerri Parker is the BEST!! i learned so much and she is more than willing to help when you ask for it! i had no intrest in the class just needed and ICS but she made the class so intresting I LOVED IT

My boyfriend and I took this class together and it was so interesting! I learned so much and this honestly was the best class i have taken at de anza.I was not sure weather i wanted to study and become an immigration lawyer or not but this class made all the difference! As long as you look at the class website everyday you will be just fine.
Mrs. Parker was one of the best teachers I have had at De Anza, she gives a lot of extra credit points, some of the tests were a little difficult, but do the study guides, they help a lot. Fun projects, very knowledgeable, and tells plenty of stories to keep you entertained. Things have to be turned in on time but she gives you pleanty of time.
I took the hybrid class, and I found I learned a lot. A lot of reading and film watching (write short reports on what you did). Hand in assignments on time, and you'll get a good grade - lots of extra credit options. I very much enjoyed the books, especially Lame Deer.

Reading some of the negative responses, I find it funny that someone would feel that they had been treated "unfairly" by an American Indian. Most likely the aristocratic attitudes are from spoiled little brats that don't like to be told what to do. In fact, if you show up, shut up and do the assignments, you will more than likely receive an A.
Professor Parker is great teacher! Her textbook choices are interesting and so are film choices! There are so many ways to receive extra credit points that failing this class might just be impossible. Shes funny and witty so dont think you will be able to pull one on her but more importantly she is fair. Take her class!!!
I was neutral about taking this class but Gerri is a wonderful teacher. I learned so much from this class, and the material was extremely engaging in class and out. The book choices were excellent and there was a variety of extra credit, including trips and movies. A motivated, open-minded student will find mind-changing illumination.
You should have no problems passing this class if you read the books, and make sure you take notes on everything you read. Most of the quizzes are about the books! Great class and teacher! There is a ton of extra credit you can do.
She's pretty nice but she gives a lot of homework, and i mean a lot of homework. The work load is kind of ridiculous. But its pretty easy to get an A in the class. A lot of opportunity for extra credit. I just did all of the assignments but no extra credit and i got an A.
THE WORK ISNT HARD AS LONG AS YOU ATTEND CLASS AND DO ALL YOUR WORK AND EXTRA CREDIT.
Nice teacher and great class but agree with the others that the workload borders on insanely ridiculous--including hours upon hours of movies--but they're all interesting. Lots of extra credit opportunities. If you do all the work you'll def learn a ton but be prepared to keep up with it all to ensure success.

Sure, it's hard not to get an A with all the extra credit, but you'll need to do it because she marks off points randomly. So. Much. Work. She's unclear-you'll have to google for her assignments' physical locations. Exams only halfway make sense. Interesting subject but that has nothing to do with her. Would have been good class if she wasn't lazy.
Easy A. She gives a lot of opportunity for extra credit. But it's all relevant. She made me very interested in American Indian Arts. I can say although the class was super easy I did learn a lot and I feel like I grew a lot. HINT: Pay attention in class and don't be rude (stay off your cell, follow directions, etc).
There is a LOT of work, and she is a relatively tough grader, but if you do the work and turn in extra credit work every day, you're likely to get an A. Good: Lots of extra credit, take home exams. Bad: Long movies for HW and Artist Profile Project (you have to start early and put a lot of work into it!)
Extremely discriminating and unreasonable. Instead of learning about religion, the entire quarter was about the bloodshed in history and the cruelty of the Europeans. Minimal learning from the classes, most of the exams are based on her opinion and tiny details from books we read and do assignments on. Lots of tedious mindless work.
You will learn history from American Indian perspectives that will guide u to the origins of religion. Covers many religions & traditions. Unique class,have respect & be open minded. -DON'T- take it if ur not interested in the subject! TIPS: Take thorough notes incl page #,review assign beforehand,do xtra credit,keep up-lots of work, do your best.

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A LOT OF TIME, DO NOT TAKE HER. Her class is a HUGE TIME WASTE by watching A LOT OF MOVIES just to type a one page report. I hate movies and every meeting you have to complete a movie. She is very confusing and does not bother reminding the class about the homework. Most importantly staple your work, she is very strict on it .

So far I am taking this class and I really enjoy it, the stories are good and she is funny.
Worst teacher to take. Easy assignments but they are tedious. gives extra credit to make up for her horrible disorganized teaching skills. Do not take.
