very interesting and knowledgeable professor
If not for his clumsy pratfalls the entire class would be asleep....
Dr. Voogt is highly intelligent but if you are not you will struggle in his class. I worked hard for a B. Expect to spend the entire semester with your head stuck in a book if you want to succeed.
You MUST: Read, read, read. Take excellent notes (if you don't, buy them from someone) and keep perfect attendance. If you do these things, you will be successful. Tests are not hard, but you must stay prepared. I enjoyed his class.
Very strong accent, very strict on attendance, and you must read everything in the class. Teacher understands english literally so misunderstandings sometimes come about. Classes are over loaded since Hist and SSED majors must take class. Be prepared to work hard and get lost in the crowd.
Dr. Voogt is very difficult, but I am enjoying the challenge. He loves what he teaches and it is obvious. Take him if you have the time to read a lot and/or you really love history. If you make it through his class you will be better for it.
He is very knowledgable and intelligent. He is one of the best professors I have had.
I just finished his final and my mind and body are beat! However, he is an excellent teacher. I know much more about the subject than before and learned how to apply it to other areas of history and life. Dr. Voogt is the perfect teacher for history students that are interested in learning.
I took Dr. Voogt for the above class last semester. It was too hard! If you like reading 100 pages a night, and have the ability to memorize dozens of ancient names while learning what each and everyond of them said and did and meant, you will do fine. Otherwise - drop.
He always gives a test early on to see how well you are doing and to see what everyone knows. If you don't pass this test you won't pass the class. The test get several times harder than the first. Also, you will get slammed on your paper. It isn't you, just the way he grades papers.
I had him for 2 classes this summer. There is alot of reading but the lectures were interesting and he is very knowledgable about history. Truly enjoyed his classes. Tests are matching and essay, 1 paper due. Would definately reccommend this prof.
Amazingly smart and very cool. All it takes is a little effort. Best to take this class durring the summer, he doesn't require as much reading.
I avoid every upper level history class with him, even if it is a class I want to take. Can't stand the guy. Very thick accent, very down on the US, and very boring. TAKES ATTENDANCE!! Women especially, don't take him. Very chauvinistic.
Dr. Voogt does not have a thick accent. Rather, he speaks in very clear, precise English. I have taken many many History classes at KSU and know many professors--he is my favorite. Yes, you have to read the materials. Yes, you have to attend classes to understand the materials in context and share ideas with other students. Yes, you must be clear on your exams (but not because of his English, because that is the point of exams). But he is great. OH!! And most definitely NOT chauvinistic! A wonderful person.
Very knowledgable and interesting class. Expects you to WORK, however you will learn in this class. I think he is very clear when speaking. If you have trouble, just go to his office and he will give you encouragement and help you anyway he can. If you want to learn something...take him.
He is inconsiderate to the fact that students have other classes. You must know every little detail for the tests. He does everything to the T, so the work in this class will overshadow the rest of your classes. Smart, but the worst professor ever. He shows no remorse for students that try, but still score poorly.
Dr. Voogt is a nice man and a true scholar. He is hard, but he does understand what he teaches. He can be hard because he is so intelligent, and most of us are not at his level. I also took him for French Phil and sat in his class blown away at everything his brain held. If you just want to graduate skip him - if you want to learn take him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN!! His tests suck. I have never made such terrible test grades in my whole life. He gives you a study guide to go by for each test. Don't bother studying it because 95% of the things listed on the study guide are not on the test. The other comments say to take him if you want to learn, but I also have to PASS!!!
Hey is a very good teacher. He might come off as a little rough, but he is still very good overall. I liked the class alot. I was interested before I took it and was still interested in it afterwards. His tests are rough, but he is fairly objective on the essays. I got a b in the class, and it wasn't THAT hard to get.
I do not know how the students who I was told were making A's and B's were doing it. Requires you to know too much info! Most of the stuff on his review sheets is NOT on his tests.
Would not recommond taking. I normally love history, but when I took him had no idea where the class was going. Is not willing to help stundents
Dr. Voogt is Great you will learn alot! He is very helpful if you ask him for help and is Very nice and approachable. As said before, he is a very intelligent man & his tests are hard, but its worth it. I've got an A, it just required going to class & making an effort, not for the faint hearted. I'm taking him for 2 classes now & next semester.
Good professor. I enjoyed his class. If you want to do well in his class, you must do all of your reading.
He is my favorite teacher hands down. He was the first History prof that actually challanged me. it was great. i am taking him again.
I love you, Dr. Voogt. Best teacher ever!
I loved this class. I still read my notes and textbook. Dr. Voogt is an excellent teacher.
If you are majoring in World History, definitely take every class you can with him. While his teaching style is a bit unorthodox (he has way too much knowledge in that head of his), you will pay attention and take notes if you enjoy history. Gives lots of fun facts here and there, and seems to be very cultured.
Go to class, do all your readings and you will get a an A. Test are fill in the blanks, short answers and essays.Very knowledgeable.
One of the smartest and most interesting Profs on campus. His tone may be hard for some to warm up to. He will learn the names of every student in the class within a couple of weeks. The tests were hard, but not if you do the reading. I can not recommend him enough for anyone with even the slightest interest in history.
I am so-so about this professor. He is very knowledgeable and so he can be very interesting. However, he can also be quite difficult. His tests were very hard and he graded them really harshly. I felt that he graded unfairly. We got so far behind the schedule that the workload was too much to handle with other classes, so I dropped his class.
This professor is DIFFICULT. Never IN MY LIFE have I made such poor test scores. Very difficult tests. Very harsh grader. I'm going to have to work my butt of for the rest of the semester just to make a B. Expect 4 exams,an attendance policy and some pop quizzes.
Very nice professor and very knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend doing the reading and attending class. The tests are difficult but not impossible, I got high B's and A's on them. I would definitely take him again.
Nice professor, but the subject is a little boring. The class is history of religious tolerance which I expected to be more globally focused; instead, all we really talked about was Europe, Jews, and different sects of Xianity. Great teacher, I'd take him for again for a different course, just didn't enjoy this material.
I have taken Dr. Voogt for three classes, HIST 2206, HIST 3305 and HIST 3376 and I recieved an A in all three. If you study and read the text and attend lectures, you'll do fine. Tests are matching, short answer and essay. He answers any questions you might have and is very knowledable. You will learn a ton. I highly recommend this professor.
OK he is very very nice and also intelligent but very hard his tests are a nightmare. What's sad is that I studied and I know the material and still did poorly. I have a 3.9 GPA so I know its not me. DR Voogt please ease up on those tests please some of us work full time and take other classes.
Great professor. I've taken three classes with him and I must say: best professor in the History department. Classes are challenging, but extremely rewarding. He also takes time to help out students with grad school questions, comments, and even letters of recommendation (if he likes you - which is probable)
Dr. Voogt really knows his stuff. His test is one essay question, 5 paragraph short answer, and 20 matching. Really study hard for his test. If you sound like you know somewhat what you are talking about he will give you credit. Attend class and take good notes, he adds to the material presented in the text book.
He is one of the best teachers I have had. You have to expect to work but you will learn the subject matter and makes you feel proud to know so much. Study for his essay tests and repeat verbatim what he says in class and then the tests really aren't that bad.
Very smart and helpful. He knows a lot of stuff, he is very helpful.
I loved Prof Voogt's class; he really knows his stuff and expects a lot from the students. His study guides (for historiography class) do not accurately help with what will be on his exams so you need to make sure you are well-versed on everything but over all a wonderful and very helpful professor who is interesting to talk to.
Debates. I absolutely hated this class, it's not interesting and I had a hard time studying for his exams, which were very hard. They're short answer and essay questions mostly. His study guides had more content than what was taught and didn't help much, if at all. He's nice and knowledgeable but he expects a lot from you. Better start studying now
Hardest A I've ever earned in my LIFE. Loved the class, love Dr Voogt, but this class is not for the faint-hearted. If you're serious about learning history, take every class you can from him (I am!). If you're not, find a less-challenging professor. This guy is the best!
Very top-notch professor. Challenging, but a very interesting and satisfying class. Dr. Voogt is highly knowledgeable about the subject and you will too if you get engaged. He was always offering assistance if needed. I look forward to taking more of his classes.
You have to read the chapter to follow in class. He's very knowledgeable but if you haven't read it will be hard to follow the information. His tests are a little hard but he gives you study guide questions that will make or break you on the test. The paper wasn't hard at all and you choose your own topic that he approves.
Really Hard Professor... If you can avoid him, do so.
This class was one of the toughest I've ever taken - but Dr. Voogt is terrific. He knows what he's talking about inside and out. Be prepared for long, thorough essay tests and several nit-picky quizzes. You'll learn a lot, but you'll work for a decent grade. Highly recommended.
Professor Voogt is a wonderful and knowledgeable teacher. He was always willing to help anyone in need. His test are not difficult if you take good notes, read the assign chapters and study. His test does consist of matching, short essay question and a long essay. I highly recommend taking good notes to pass his exams. Take his class if you can.
Top notch professor, but don't take him unless you have a strong interest in history and a desire to learn. There are 2 papers and a LOT of reading, and the 3 tests are all essay questions. So it is a very involved class but if you really want to learn, you most definitely will. He is very helpful; take him if you love history.
Difficult class. I never really found his lectures interesting. He does pop-quizzes regularly on the reading! Tests are difficult. I worked hard for a B.
Extremely difficult class. He is NOT approachable. Please avoid him if you can. His lecture is very confusing.
Dr. V is best teacher in the history department. He has a world view of history and is refreshing in his honesty. If you are lazy or looking for an easy A, then he is not your guy! If you love history and a serious student and are capable of holding a pencil with your opposable thumb, then do yourself a favor and take his class!
I loved this class. It was difficult - the reading is dense. Lectures expand past the reading and you are tested on it. ATTEND CLASS and TAKE NOTES. The reading quizzes were a little tricky but didn't count for much credit. There is an 8 page paper - your choice of topic. Professor is passionate about history though and very nice.
He will spend a whole week of class talking about two slides from a power point and expect you to read about 40-60 pages in one day. He will then give you a pop quiz and it will be over nothing but the text. Nothing over the power point. Never posts when items are due. Very confusing. Avoid at all cost.
This was a fun class even for someone who isn't a big history buff. He makes Game of Thrones jokes and is very passionate about teaching history. Going to class is important if you want to do well.
I took this as a summer class and it was basically just 2hrs45m of him talking really slowly about 1 or 2 slides. I love history, it's my major, but this was painful. He is super knowledgable, nice, and well-traveled, but it's not worth it. Also, his quizzes only have a few questions, so it's hard to do well.
I was lucky to have previous knowledge on other cultures, without it I would have failed. This is a hard class due to not know what to study and how. 90% of the study guide for the final was not on the final!! Worked very hard for a B. Many quiz's 1 or 2 papers and 2 exams 1 final for a summer class. Lot of work.
History classes are already hard and he doesn't give extra credit. He counted the map at the end of each test as extra credit smh. He tries his best to get you to understand the material but it's in vain. I had to YouTube a lot of it to BARELY pass the exams. He's helpful but it's not enough. I got a B by the grace of God. Smh
This is an upper level history class- don't expect to not have to work. Outstanding professor but lectures are long. I did not miss a lecture the entire semester for fear of missing something crucial. Very Knowledgeable. Very helpful professor IF YOU ASK. I read every chapter, and studied extensively for exams. (3 exams at 20% each)
I took this class at 8 AM which may have effected my overall grade. Overall Voogt is very nice and even let me take the final when I mixed up dates. I went through the class without reading, which can be done but for an A reading would really help, especially with the book based test he gives. He will recognize an absence. Don't be afraid of him!
Super lecture heavy, but a very knowledgeable professor! He knows SO MUCH about everything he covers in class. Bring a cup of coffee, keep yourself awake, and pay attention. He doesn't grade too harshly, but you absolutely do need to do the readings.
Excellent prof for History of the World Since 45. Broken into a few tests and quizzes that follow the same format. As long as you read the book and show up for lecture, you're set! History is not always the most engaging subject, but Voogt interjects his own humor into lecture and makes it interesting. Take this class! You'll learn something.
Honestly, I found him kinda dull. Speaks in kinda a monotone voice. I stopped taking notes really, just read the book and went over the powerpoints and I got an A. Not a tough grader, but theres a lot of tests.
Voogt is incredibly learned in most anything Historical. He goes off on tangents in his lectures, they are almost always history related, and he lets you know what you do not need to take notes on. If you want an A in his class, you have to completely read the chapters, which he assigns almost every night. Very nice but don't take an 8am class!
I love Dr. Voogt. Second class with him and he is simply a great professor. Very hard class, but he managed to make it fun here and there with his dry humor and obsession with Holland (his home country). Would take again in a heartbeat!
This professor is really nice and knows a lot. He's a hard grader but he'll tell you exactly what you got wrong and how to fix it. He's really serious but will explain things to you. He expects participation so make comments or ask questions!
Amazing lectures; specific, but he is very clear. One of the best professors I have had. Very interesting reading materials! Provided me with so much knowledge. I would take him for every history class if I could :)
For Summer 18 he replaced the attendance grade with quizzes. Class is lecture heavy and you can tell he loves history, BUT the class can be a little boring. Total of 5 quizzes (on the book) and 3 tests (on slides & book). Know your terms and use process of elimination! He drops the lowest quiz grade & gives extra credit on tests (geography).
OGT was ONE WEEK OF CLASS shoved into one 2 hr class (with a 30 min break in between). 3 tests, 1 final, several reading quizzes (which were VERY difficult, even if you read the material), 2 papers, 1 site visit, and one book. The class was informative but as a history major, this is by far the most difficult history class I have ever taken.
Voogt is a good professor, but the material sucks. I'd take him again. 2 test (20% each), 1 final (25%), 1 paper (10%), multiple reading quizzes (10%) and a site visit report (10%). Also gotta read a whole Indian epic in just two days. Learned a lot, barley passed the class, would't be a religion a major. Not the most interesting subject.
Try to avoid taking in the summer - TONS of reading and retention in a small time frame. Also (hint) try to avoid taking at 8:00 AM. Also he doesn't EVER give extra credit. I'm a History major & I found the class hard! But he's a great professor, SUPER knowledgeable & passionate about history. He is VERY patient and kind, always willing to help.
Probably unavoidable to require a lot of reading for a class in this subject, but it's a lot for compressed time frame of a summer class. Tests were all essay -- mixture of shorter and longer -- and tough to prepare for because test review guides basically came down to 'study everything.' Papers not so hard, and site visit was a good experience.
AVOID THIS CLASS AND MAN. His lectures are full of tangents and when you do the paper at the end of the semester what he wants from you is extremely unclear. He gives you a study guide that is useless. You have an exam with 50 multiple choice, an essay and a map to fill out. Its too much and on top of all this he doesn't answer emails. Do not take
Very lecture heavy, and somewhat boring, but he does try to make them interesting. He has a Dutch accent but it isn't super thick and never prevented me from understanding what he was saying. The study guides for the tests and rubrics for the papers are somewhat unclear. If you do the readings and pay attention, it's an easy A.
I have been taking Professor Voogt's class this semester online and it is very intensive. He puts a lot of pressure on the tests and never answers any emails. He is helpful while in class but otherwise it is a mixture of boring lectures and teaching myself everything just for the test not to reflect the textbook or study guide. He is nice though!
One of the most knowledgable and best professors in history I've ever had. If you are interested in world culture and history, he is a hard recommendation. Any question is answered with respect no matter how stupid it might be, although he might go on a tangent. 3 Tests (third test is the final) Textbook work occasional worksheet
This is a very hard class. His lectures are full of tangents and he never covers everything that will be on the test. He grades extremely hard and the material is very difficult to understand.
Participation encouraged, but he isnt too strict on it. He talks VERY slow, like Winnie the Pooh. VERY educated on the topic, but NOT the best at teaching. Tests are straightforward, MCs and mini essay. HW is VERY easy, but must study hard for exams. If you can take any other professor, do it. Few grades, so must put effort in. Not worth for 2 cred
I had him for Online. Lectures were very boring and we had reading assignments every week. If you dont read and do lectures you wont pass. Hes a really nice guy whos passionate about history. Tests comes down to study everything for the unit and one writing assignment which was fairly easy.
If you're looking for an easy online class, it's not this one. Lectures are long and boring, 2 tests (20% each), 1 writing assignment(20%), weekly useless homework (10%), final (30%). Doesn't drop anything or offer any extra credit. I'm a straight A student and almost failed this class. Would not recommend his class unless you love history.
Everyone needs a history class to graduate. I chose this one with this professor, because every other class was full. If you have any chance to take ANY other professor, I would. This professor acts like youre majoring in history. There are only 3 tests, not to mention they are lockdown browser/webcam. Choose anyone else. This class is insane.
He was so cute and sweet! His lectures were really boring though. He only has three tests that were really rough. I had a couple mental breakdowns with this class.
The professor was very sweet but he lives in another state which made online meetings very difficult. Connection was always static sounding and in and out. I had to teach myself this course, and there is a lot of assignments, but they're extremely easy and keeps your grade high even if you don't make good on the exams.
This professor was so so sweet and very passionate about history. I was in his online world history class. His tests were very hard though and he is a harsh grader. His tests consists of about 60 multiple choice questions with a long essay question that you have to memorize. Overall,I liked him a lot
Made As in every class this semester except this one. Incredibly boring and impossible tests.
Took his class online and don't recommend it at all. His lectures were very boring and slow. He is also impossible to reach I emailed him along with a few others in the class and never received a response. Also gives the HARDEST test I have ever taken with lockdown browser+ cam and essay questions.
