Best teacher I've ever had by far. He knows the business and spends all his free time helping out the students.

Good teacher, very helpful if you need it and ask for help. Class title doesn't really describe it's content, though that's not his fault

Great designer and teacher! He may be harsh when it comes to critiquing students' works, but a good teacher will tell you the truth, whether it's good or bad. I would much prefer all the teachers be more critical and tell me what I did wrong instead of telling me that it's perfect.

Has honest things to say when it comes to your pieces. Really helpful comments.

This instructor is very knowledgeable and an inspiration for those students that are passionate about art and the creative aspects of design.

Gerry is a very helpful teacher. He is very experienced in design and the business behind it. I am really grateful that he taught Portfolio I. I've heard Portfolio I with other teachers isn't as great. Gerry is a great guy, other people leaving bad reviews are probably people that didn't do well in his classes.

Gerry is pretty much the best teacher at the Art Institute. He is very knowledgeable about the graphic design industry. He can be strict in critique but he tells you the truth.

Gerry is a good professor. He will help you if you come to him and even if you don't. He does go off on tangents at least once during every class. Sometimes he relates it to the coursework. He'll answer any questions you have about the industry. His stories are outrageous, but who knows if it's true. He's a good guy and cares about students.

Gerry is genuine and honest when it comes to critiques. He has extensive knowledge and experience in many different areas inside the art-world. His objective is to get you to communicate with a great idea and leave out all of the "filler". Don't expect to just skate by..Gerry wants to see smart design and doesn't tolerate laziness and/or poor work.

i think that your class was great. it really helped me think "outside" of the box. i loved how you gave us so much creative freedom. your instructions and explanations were so clear and to the point. i also really like how hard you made the work and how "hard" your grading is, however, i also like that at the same time you understand the technical

This class was a definite creative challenge overall. It makes you think in ways you never thought of before. Constructing a creative, and manageable book is difficult. Gerry was very helpful, nice and challenging as well. Great class. Would take it again.

Gerry is a great teacher he really pushes you to do your best and create a really nice piece for your portfolio. He's really helpful and his advice is usually right on. even though you do a lot more work in his classes it is really worth the time and effort.

I thought that this class really helped me understand how type works as a whole with the entire piece. Even though my final project wasn't at the level that I wanted it to be. Gerry really gave me some valuable advice that I will take to heart and use for the piece that I will use in my portfolio. Gerry I really enjoyed your class. Thanks!

My first time taking Gerry, To my by far one of the best here at AIOC. The class lets you be creative and he guides you and encourages you to work hard. By him doing so it pushes you to turn out great work.

Gerry has been very helpful in his teaching and his advise that he gives to come up with a solution. His critiques help you become a better designer. This class gives you the freedom to explore many design aspects.

Type4, the project is something you would really want to put lots of effort into. His sometimes brutal criticisms will only help you grow to be a better designer. One thing I feel that would improve the class would to give 2 weeks following midterms, solely for binding.

Gerry is a good teacher who has interesting stories that relate to the material. His subject matter is in depth and completely useful. He doesn't bore you with his lectures. He doesn't allow you to slack around. Great teacher. He makes Joel Bruce look like a chump!

project concept - prior to taking this class i had no interest in going freelance, but gerry's motivation for being happy in the design field changed my mind. very interesting class with tons of necessary information. very realistic. looking forward to having gerry for more classes in the future.

Gerry is a great guy who teaches a fun class. Some people might say he's a hard teacher, but I think the work load is justified by the quality of the end product if you're dedicated. If you're offended by criticisms about your own graphic work, then maybe you're in the wrong field. You're in school to learn, and Gerry is there to help.

Learned quite a bit about business, was nice to get a stationery set done. Business plan feels like it should be a 3 week project not 2 weeks

good teacher, some difficult projects but they are worth it. you learn a lot because gerry's a pro and he's been in the design industry for a long time.

Gerry is a great teacher, I can only remember a handful of teachers I have had over the years he will be one. From telling us a story about his pet bear in college to gearing us up for freelancing and balancing budgets you can't put a price on his class, you get more than you bargained for.

every class i have had with Gerry has been useful and i always come out feeling that i got my moneys worth, which is rare and far between.

Please provide students with the opportunity to take his Portfolio I class in the Summer 2009.

Gerry has a very cool and calm disposition. You won't hear auto-responses from him about your projects because he genuinely becomes involved. If you aren't immersed in your own work, he will know, and you will be ignored. Gerry has a huge knowledge base and can help you become a more professional designer. If you want it bad enough. Gerry has always been a great to instructor to have in your school curriculum. No matter what major you are in you can learn something from him. He has very valuable practical knowledge by experience that not every teacher has. An overal he is a great guy and fun to have as a teacher.

In project concept i learned way to much to Handel. I couldn't even believe how exciting it is to learn this stuff. Although it was overload in each session. You start to have things click step by step

This class has taught me a lot. I have been waiting to take a class like this to show me how to start my own freelance graphic design business. I am glad he showed me how to make sure I can take care of myself legally so I do not get sued.

This is a really useful class. It is an entire class about the business side of graphic design. You learn how to run your own freelance design business. Really awesome class!

Gerry teaches several of my classes and i would say hand down he is one of my best professor! And it's not b/c his classes r easy. He is tough on grading but that's b/c he wants u to learn and to be a better designer. So if u have a chance to take him, do take it! You'll learn a LOT from his class!

He does talkabout himself n business so you can learn from his f- ups not ego at all. if bored he tells outragious stories about himself n college he walked elephants & a bear! we didn't believe so he brought in pictures! No lies worked at wild animal park Lion Country Safari! I'd drink beer with him just to listen to his stories- way cool!!

Great instructor x 10! One of the best at AI. 3 negs is just one person trying to talk trash as they can't handle the truth about their own work as Hampton always calls it straight up with no BS then tries to help you improve. Hamptons very down to earth always helpful. G- your the best don't let any trash talking haters bring you down.

good advice

Gerry normally teaches the Portfolio II class, but as soon as I found out he is the instructor for the Portfolio I class this quarter, I immediately registered for his class. He does his best to have the students graduating with an AA reach a BA-level portfolio.

Hampton showed a lot of interest in helping out students with their work. He is a great person and as an instructor he gives very constructive criticism.

Gerry class was A HUGE eye opener. His blunt honesty and detailed critiques are extremely helpful when trying to put together pieces for your portfolio. I had him for the Portfolio 1 class and he definitely paved the way to a successful portfolio throughout the whole class. Thank you Gerry for getting me prepared for what to expect out there!

Your teaching methods are clean & concise. The class was fun & exciting and I eagerly awaited coming every week. When I first took this class the instructor was intimidating and looked down on ill informed questions but I felt at home in your class, However some of my questions were unanswered and i felt overlooked at times but i am happy overall.

Gerry is awesome. He gives you the best feedback and it's usually something you never even thought of that will make your work awesome. He can ramble on and on and make you pull your hair out but it it's a small price to pay for how much he will push and help you.

An excellent, easy-going teacher who knows his stuff. He is a wealth of knowledge and advice in everything pertaining to the art and graphic design professions. Definitely a teacher to keep, and his Project Concept class is one of the most important classes you'll ever take at AI.

Hampton is ****ing awesome teacher. He gives real world experience, relates stories with all his lectures. He treats you like an adult from day one with respect towards students. Hes cool cause he will let you ask questions relating to the field, and sometimes makes that his lecture. hes strict but hes someone to defiantly learn from.

This is my 2nd class with Gerry (Project Concept). He's extremely helpful and knowledgeable - he's had years of experience in the design industry and has a lot of great advice. Project Concept is a business class, and probably one of the most important classes I've taken here at Ai. Ger-Bear's the man!

This is an amazing class for designers really worth taking if you want to be successful in your future. Gerry is by far the best teacher i've had because of all is knowledge, and one that i feel comfortable in going to and talking to with a design issue.

Gerry is one of the best teachers here along with Gardea and Hanson. He doesn't tell you want you want to hear but want you need to hear. He is a great teacher. Very helpful. Don't take class if your not a great designer or have the potential to be. Pushes you beyond the paper and is a great overall teacher that would work over time with you if your stumbling over a design.

To each his own. If your a poor designer what can you gain from a port class? He gives you creative freedom on your work.As a professional designer he lets his students know if 'the message' is coming across in their work.

I am an alumni student from AICAOC and have many classes with Gerry. He is by far THE BEST teacher I've ever had. The student(s) that write a bunch of hate mail on here, wait until you get out in the real world. Hope it doesn't eat you alive because you couldn't be open minded to what Gerry was teaching you.

The information is important and intimidating to take in all at once. He knows his stuff and I trust him. Maybe I just wish projects in this class were discussed more in-depth and not run through so quickly. Stories are a great addition, though.

I have been a student at AI for almost 2 years and I will say this course and instructor is by far the best I have had. He gives the best lectures ever and did an excellent job teaching us Students about the business side of Graphic Design. I would highly recommend that students that can take Gerry for any course take full advantage!

I always love classes with Gerry. He is tough, but he is bluntly honest. He does talk about himself a lot, but his stories are pretty entertaining. He is very helpful.
